t is Friday night in New York City. The glitz and glimmer of the Big Apple’s theater district shines brightly on this autumn evening in 2013. But on the corner of Broadway and 95th Street, a more somber production is underway inside the multipurpose performing arts hall Symphony Space.

“November 21, 1963: The Day Before,” a multidiscipline artistic tribute and remembrance of the John F. Kennedy assassination, fills the hall with touching stories, skits and songs of memories of that fateful November day from artists and performers such as John Guare, Craig Lucas, Arthur Kopit, Nico Muhly, Robert Osborne, Margaret Kampmeier, B.D. Wong and Olympia Dukakis.

A few weeks prior, just downtown from Symphony Space in the Upper West Side, the original opera “Two Boys” opened at the Metropolitan Opera to great fanfare. With music composed by Muhly and the libretto written

by Lucas (both participating artists at the above Symphony Space event), the opera concerns a detective’s investigation into the stabbing of a teenage boy and the shadowy world of online forums.

These artistic events fuse a wide array of talent in various disciplines. But the JFK retrospective and the opera have one common denominator: the Hermitage Artist Retreat.

In total, 13 Hermitage alumni participated in the Kennedy event and the opera.

// ARTS&ENTERTAINMENT Hermitage Executive Director Bruce Rodgers, the Hermitage staff and supporters traveled to New York City to see the Symphony Space performance. As Rodgers recently walked through each building at the artist retreat, he referenced this “Hermitage Network” through which its artists are forever linked.

“We have reached a whole other element of our mission,” says Rodgers. “What our artists have accomplished has been inspirational, expansive and life-affirming.”

Like its artists, the Hermitage has endured its own creative journey that began at the turn of the 20th century on a tranquil corner of Manasota Key. Swedish immigrant Carl Johansen first purchased the beachfront property in 1907; he also erected its first building. For the next nearly 70 years, the Hermitage land and building was exchanged between several owners. Its uses ranged from a nudist colony, called the Florida Sea Island Sanctuary, to the private residences of Alfred Whitney (who added a cottage

and water pump house) and Otto Thurston Alexander.

Then in 1975 the actions of a writer and her artist daughter would irrevocably change the course of the property’s destiny. Writer Ruth Swayze and her daughter, Carroll Swayze, leased the Hermitage as a retreat for their own artistic ventures. Their experience at the property would be the first in the Hermitage’s present artistic lineage. The duo quickly realized the historic and aesthetic worth of the buildings on the property. Years of sea salt, wind and torrential weather had taken their toll on the core of the property’s architectural stability.

The two led the charge within the community and raised the public profile of the property into something worth saving.

“It was the perfect storm of public complaining, energy and opportunity,” says Patricia Caswell, Hermitage program director and Greenfield Prize coordinator.

The latter awards a $30,000 commission to promising artists in various artistic fields.

executive director of the Sarasota County Arts Council and helped lead a Comprehensive Community Cultural Plan to revitalize and redefine the county’s relationship with local organizations and local artists. Caswell’s “perfect storm” generated a reconstruction and salvaging of the five buildings on the Hermitage property. The reconstruction effort raised approximately $1.3 million from private donations and local and state funding.

The Creative Colony: A timeline of the Hermitage 1936: After going through several owners, the “Florida Sea Island Sanctuary,” a nudist colony, opens. It operates for two years.

1907: Carl Johansen and 15 members emigrate from Sweden to Florida. Johansen eventually purchases the current Hermitage property site and settles there.

1947: Otto Thurston Alexander purchases the Hermitage property and combines it with Whitney’s property.

His family begins to live at the property.

1940: Bachelor Alfred Whitney builds himself a beach retreat adjacent to the Hermitage property.

and walls were replaced. They transformed into modern studio spaces for visiting artists, whom a 13-member committee that includes arts administrators and artists from across North America selects. Once nominated by the committee, the artists are invited for a total of six weeks to their new artistic home.

Artist talks, a composer interview series, open visual artist studio tours and the popular monthly beach readings are regular ways for citizens to connect with visiting artists.

1988: The Hermitage property is sold to the Sarasota County Parks and Recreation department to be destroyed for added beachfront parking. The plan is quickly sidelined due to the property’s historic importance.

1975 to 1986: Local author Ruth Swayze and her daughter, visual artist Carroll Swayze, live on the Hermitage property and raise local awareness of the house and the location’s importance. They begin the Hermitage’s tradition of housing artists.

“There will be 200 to 300 people sitting out on our beach in front of the house, and it’ll be the largest audience these writers have ever had listening to their words,” Rodgers said.

From a dilapidated set of buildings to a thriving enterprise, the Hermitage Artist Retreat is an inspiring artistic success story.

Asked what has kept this location and property alive over the years, Rodgers pointed out the door toward the gulf.

“Look at it,” says Rodgers laughing. “Its value is intrinsic.”

2004: The Hermitage Artist Retreat hosts its inaugural artist, sculptor Malcolm Robertson and his wife, Kathryn, starting an artist residency program that continues to this day with 60 artists of various disciplines invited in 2014 alone.

1999: After a decade of advocacy by members of the Englewood community, the Sarasota County Arts Council establishes a Comprehensive Community Cultural Plan. Patricia Caswell, executive director of the arts council, and Syd Adler, community philanthropist and art collector, lead a steering committee to raise funds to turn the property into an artist retreat.

Lasting Legacy Walking into the Ringling College of Art and Design’s Selby Gallery is like walking into a scene from “Indiana Jones.” Books and manuscripts crafted by artisans and artists centuries ago stand like obelisks of knowledge. The handcrafted tomes of medical texts, philosophy and business transactions are the ancestors of the books, newspapers and manuals that fill libraries and homes around the world.

The gallery currently houses the Schoenberg Collection of Manuscripts, one of the world’s most extensive collections of preGuttenberg manuscripts, books and texts.

With more than 290 artifacts collected and maintained through the centuries, the preservation of these pieces was the life’s work and passion of Larry Schoenberg and his wife, Barbara Brizdle.

These expertly crafted works of art and knowledge represent a wide variety of fields including arts and sciences, education, communication, social policy, business, law, engineering, medicine and design.

After decades of obtaining and preserving these fragile and centuries-old documents, the couple donated their collection in 2011 to the library of Schoenberg’s alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania. Ever since, the Schoenberg Institute for Manuscript Studies, which was created with the donation, has been working to further advance its extensive collection. It has been digitizing manuscripts for public access at the neighboring Schoenberg Center for Electronic Text and Image and supporting scholarly work of students at Penn and across the country.

York Public Library on the Bull Moose election. They brought him original documents from that era, and I think he was in love with the smell and feel of old manuscripts ever since.”

Though their collection resides in Philadelphia, Schoenberg and Brizdle moved in 1997 full time to Longboat Key and became supporters of the Ringling College of Art and Design. When the college’s letterpress and book-arts center opened in 2011, it seemed like a perfect opportunity to display the origins of the art of bookmaking contained in the Schoenberg manuscripts.

Unfortunately, Schoenberg died in May, just after the Ringling and the manuscript institute finalized a time and location to

display Schoenberg’s valuable and educational treasures.

“Larry cared very much that his collection be used and available to everyone, whether by scholars, researchers, dealers or collectors,” says Brizdle.

The exhibition, “A Legacy Inscribed: The Lawrence J. Schoenberg Collection of Manuscripts,” runs from Jan. 16 to Feb. 18.

The exhibit represents a new type of gallery for the college, which has never displayed pieces of such historical value.

“Once we finalized the exhibition, we had to go through a list of what was safe for transportation and storage of the manuscripts,” says Laura Avery, director of galleries and exhibitions at Ringling College

of Art and Design. “We had to make sure the humidity and atmospheric levels in the Selby Gallery were exact so as to not degrade the manuscripts as well as install extra security measures.”

The approximately 65 books and maps on loan from the Penn collection will range in form, function and artistic methods. Featured items include translations of Aristotle’s “Metaphysics,” a transfer of land in Spain from the 1600s, a book on saddle design and even a clay tablet written in cuneiform, one of the earliest known forms of writing, detailing a tax bill.

“For our students to really see what was done historically in the beginning of the written word is really essential and important,” says Larry R. Thompson, president of Ringling College. “I want the students who are practicing press and book design to realize that their work has an impact on society and might even be, like the manuscripts on display, around 400 to 500 years from now.”

“I’m very excited about what the manuscripts can tell us about the past times,” says Brizdle. “The collection and exhibit reflect Larry’s legacy because he has made a difference by making these manuscripts available to future scholars.”

// Sarasota Orchestra’s Masterworks III Every now and then we attend a concert that, like a perfect storm, all comes together to make perfectly glorious music.

That happened this past weekend when the Sarasota Orchestra and Music Director Anu Tali offered a program of particularly disparate works by extremely contrasting composers and came out with a confluence of sounds that made us weep.

Richard Strauss’ intense “Death and Transfiguration” is rarely, if ever, heard as a curtain opener, but Tali used it well, carefully building colors and textures in her orchestra so the musicians produced an organ-like sound with a depth of understanding that comes from both the heart and technical prowess. The opening of this work isn’t easy to understand. One friend said, “You have to be older to appreciate that opening,” and that made me realize why the first themes made me so uncomfortable: they deal with the concept of death and the fear of dying. But the transfiguration that comes after that is so uplifting, so spiritual, it’s hard not to believe things get better. With its “Superman” sound-alike theme, when played well, it’s almost impossible not to soar with it and the Sarasota Orchestra, sounding like a giant organ with shimmer and depth, spun legatos that seemed to go on forever.

One of the most important marks of a great orchestra is its ability to switch styles seamlessly. In this concert, the Sarasota Orchestra and Tali moved from century to century as if they were born to each one.

From the passionate complexity of Richard Strauss, they moved with ease to the clarity and precision of Mozart.

Replacing the flugelhorn player, Sergei Nakariakov, who was unable to perform

due to illness, the Orchestra was able to bring in the internationally renowned pianist Tamara Stefanovich, who has performed at festivals from Aldeburgh to Lucerne and worked with such renowned conductors as Pierre Boulez. Because the theme of this program was “In Love,” the fitting concerto was Mozart’s C Major, No. 21, K.467, often known as the “Elvira Madigan” concerto because its slow movement was used in that film.

From the very opening notes we heard a clean, incisive orchestra providing the framework for Stefanovich, whose stylistic, clear and sensitive playing seemed a perfect match to the orchestral instrumentalists. It was a classic performance of a classic, with Tali using that long legato to make the orchestra and soloist sound like one organism. Even the pizzicato strings had long, singing lines. And the transitions between themes and those all-important silences were always perfect.

Tchaikovsky’s “Romeo and Juliet” Fantasy Overture used to be played often in concert halls and on the radio, but it seems to have gone out of fashion over the last few decades. Perhaps it was too romantic for the late 1900s. We certainly can’t remember the last time we heard it at a live performance, so it was like welcoming back an old friend who’d stayed away too long. Tali built a beautiful tension throughout the piece, giving the horns, brass and percussion their head to build great fortissimos but always keeping them from becoming blatty and brash. Again, the transitions were flawless with a sort of mystical sound linking the majestic, romantic segments.

Finally, the orchestra opened those first magic notes from the Suite No. 2 of Ravel’s “Daphnis et Chloe.” With washes of sound and color that made me feel like I’d slipped into “Green Mansions,” every musician in the orchestra turned into a soloist, showing a magnificent obsession with sound, quality and ability. This

Yes, there’s a touch of Alexander Borodin’s Russia in the brass and percussion, but this piece is a vehicle for the wind section with the flute (Betsy Traba) leading us into a space that’s like a waterfall splashing into a pond.

The Nazi party wasn’t much of a party.

Not a fun-loving bunch, those guys. Even so, their jackboots, leather accessories and sweaty outdoor rallies had a sadomasochistic, decadent association — a hint that, deep down, those Nazi boots were kinky boots. When it comes to this theory, “Cabaret” is exhibit one.

This Broadway smash (music and lyrics

by John Kander and Fred Ebb; script

by Joe Masteroff) is a musical theater adaptation of Christopher Isherwood’s “Goodbye to Berlin” and John Van Druten’s play, “I am a Camera,” based on that book. That complicated chain of adaptation leads back to eyewitness testimony — namely Isherwood’s, who actually lived and wrote in early 1930s Berlin, like his fictional character. My point? There’s decadent fact behind the musical’s fiction.

Ironically, it’s a musical about people who don’t want to face facts.

Most of the action unfolds in the Kit Kat Klub, a decadent endroit reflecting poor spelling skills. The Emcee (Ross Boehringer) is elfin yet creepy (think “The

movie) involves the autumn romance of Cliff’s landlady, Fraulein Schneider (Lilian Moore), and a fruit shop owner, Herr Schultz (Elliott Raines). Schultz happens to be Jewish. At the dawn of Nazi ascendance that’s a problem — and she breaks the romance off. Before that happens, their sweet story forms a normal counterpoint to the decadent world of the Kit Kat Klub.

(Which, by 21st century standards, isn’t that decadent. There’s no twerking at all.)

Michael Newton-Brown’s direction deftly alternates between the demimonde of the club and the seedy apartment of the writer. The actors put in stunning performances, with special props for Boehringer’s sleazy master of ceremonies, DeShazer’s falling star and Vitale’s almost innocent abroad. Kelly Burnette’s choreography sizzles; Jared Walker’s costumes have the appropriate sleaze factor; Alan Jay Corey’s musical direction shines.

(He’s got first-rate music to work with, of course — Kander and Ebb. But he does justice to their tunes.)

Like a 1930s gangster movie, “Cabaret” bounces back and forth between the club’s guilty pleasures and the normal life of the flat. Like one of Hitchcock’s ticking time bombs, the Nazi threat is always there. (And Sally Bowles is always denying it.) This conveniently returns us to our original theory: Were the S&M Nazis and the decadent club performers two sides of the same coin?

Nah. There’s plenty of sublimated sexuality in the Nazi scene, sure. But they weren’t big fans of that side of human nature, or the club scene in general. Ultimately, the stormtrooping set proved to be a problem for the Weimar era’s café artists. Check out the BBC’s “The Real Cabaret” to get an idea of their tragic fate.

he 11th annual Perlman Music Program Suncoast Celebration Concert and Gala Jan. 3 was a splendid evening. Program founder Toby Perlman proclaimed the season a “pinnacle of excellence” and made a special point of thanking “Chocolate Lady,” Ilana Jones, who delivered daily doses to students and faculty. PMP Suncoast Board President Fran Lambert reminded guests of the program’s 17 nocharge events. And Tracey McCammack, a beloved Michael’s On East catering captain, was hard at work — on her birthday. She pointed with pride to the fact that her team served 400 covers two courses in 45 minutes in a jammed ballroom. Her celebration, she said, would wait until the next day when hubby Sean Berryman, the ballroom’s head catering chef, would serve her Caesar salad with blackened chicken and a bottle of Prosecco. Brava, Tracey, and happy birthday!

hat a weekend at the beach it must have been for the Glickman and Lauder families of Sarasota and New York. On New Years Day, Judith Glickman and Leonard Lauder were married at the Ritz-Carlton Beach Club.

Officiating was her son Rabbi Brenner J. Glickman of Temple Emanu-El with his brother Rabbi Jeffrey Glickman, and Rabbi Elaine Rose Glickman, the wife of Rabbi Brenner Glickman. Two days later on Jan. 3, Leo Glickman, the son of Rabbis Brenner and Elaine Rose Glickman, became a Bar Mitzvah at Temple Emanu-El and celebrated with lunch at the Chart House on Longboat Key. Congratulations and best wishes.

There was speculation that Wallenda might arrive on a high wire (he originally proposed from one) but he and his eight groomsmen instead disgorged from a “clown car” driven by Chuck “Chucko” Sidlow. Preacher, televangelist and long-time spiritual adviser and friend Joel Osteen did the honors.

During the ceremony, Wallenda gently teased his soft-spoken bride who was perhaps tearing up, “We did this once,” he said.

The party, planned by NK Productions Wedding Planning, was a classy evening including their love of circus with unicyclists and an aerial ring during cocktails, a video crew from the Discovery Channel (stay tuned for the air date) and multiple generations of the couple’s families, from Erendira’s grandmother Jackie Ashton Hay and mom Golda Ashton Hay down to her youngest nephew Nathan, age 1.

Her sister and cousin both sang for the first dance and father/daughter dance.
