UNIVERSITY PARKWAY — As the Florida Department of Transportation begins an $83 million project to improve transportation at the intersection of University Parkway and Interstate 75, much of its work, at least initially, will be keeping motorists calm.

With road congestion — and even gridlock — along University Parkway at nearby intersections of Market Street, in Lakewood Ranch, and Cattlemen Road, in Sarasota, Sarasota and Manatee county residents already are worried about traffic in the area. Adding a two-year construction project to the mix might be a traffic stopper, they say.

But FDOT officials say they are confident impacts to daily traffic will be minimal as FDOT begins work on a reconfiguration of the I-75 interchange at University Parkway into what is called a diverging diamond design. The concept is based on a standard diamond interchange design, but it has a shift in crossroad traffic within the interchange that allows left turn movements to occur without crossing oncoming traffic (see box, below).

The diverging diamond interchange will be the first of its kind in the state, although the concept is prevalent in other areas of the country.

Another first of its kind for the area will be a temporary structure being built while the diamond construction gets underway.

“We’re planning on using a temporary bridge structure that FDOT is purchasing to construct the job,” said Kevin Ingle, FDOT major reconstruction design engineer. “It shortens the time of construction.”

Use of the bridge will speed up the construction timeline by more than a year and also will allow FDOT to keep all lanes of I-75 open.

— the largest in FDOT’s inventory — will be assembled in the median of I-75 and then pushed across on rollers to its final place during construction. Once anchored down, FDOT will be able to divert northbound or southbound I-75 traffic, depending on the need, onto the bridge as it demolishes the existing infrastructure.

“All the lanes open today will be open during construction, minus a few exceptions,” Ingle said, noting contractors will work at night to limit impacts to drivers.

FDOT Communication Specialist Robin Stublen said FDOT will hire a public information officer specific to the project. He or she will attend construction meetings and address other issues. Stublen will issue no-

Property sales: Going up or down?

EAST COUNTY — It was an easy decision for Ron Javate to trade Chicago’s bustle for life in the Ranch.

A 40-year resident of “The Windy City,” Javate accepted a job opportunity in East County about three years ago, just two days after visiting the area for the first time.

“Lakewood Ranch is beautiful and the schools are great,” Javate said.

“We did our research and were most impressed with this area.”

The father of two elementary–aged children rented in University Park until six months ago, when he moved to Bridgewater. Now, he lives in a five-bedroom home that spans 3,300 square feet.

Javate landed his new home for just less than $500,000 — a steal compared with the prices of smaller homes in Chicago, he said.

He wanted more space and an affordable price tag — common requirements that keep homebuyers coming to East County.

Last year, 819 single-family homes and 146 condominiums and townhomes sold in East County, Coldwell Banker Managing Broker Terrence Cook cited from a Multiple Service Listing (MLS ) report.

The parameters ranged from University Parkway to State Road 64, and Interstate 75 to County Road 675.

While single-family home sales dropped slightly, with 821 homes sold in 2013, Anderson and others expect those numbers to climb in 2015.

In 2014, single-family home permits were on the rise, with a 2% increase, or 1,185 new homes proposed for East County and areas south of the Manatee River, compared with 1,157 permits in 2013.

Retirees predominantly purchased property in Lakewood Ranch, Parrish and other areas east of Interstate 75 or north of Braden River, said Alan Anderson, executive vice president of the Manatee Sarasota Building Industry Association.

Single-family home and townhome prices also rose throughout the year.

Coldwell Banker real estate agent Terri Henson said median prices increased about 11% in 2014 from a year ago for both.

Homes that sold for $150,000 two years ago cost more than $200,000 today, she said.

“The great buys are kind of gone now,” Henson said.

The trends show a market with more demand than supply and plenty of consumer interest, which will bleed into 2015, Michael Saunders & Co. Commercial Real Estate Specialist Susan Goldstein said.

“The market was continuing to get stronger in 2014,” Goldstein said. “I think 2015 will be an even stronger year.”

2015 FORECAST Apartment complexes, senior living neighborhoods and singlefamily homes will increase their presence in East County this year.

Multifamily unit sales are beginning to climb in East County and will continue to grow in popularity, real estate authorities agree.

But, Alan Anderson, executive vice president of the Manatee Sarasota Building Industry Association, expects the most popular type of dwelling — singlefamily homes — to continue as a front-runner in the market.

He expects new single-family sales to increase by 10% in 2015.

Also in 2015, new projects will take shape throughout the area.

Land will be developed for projects in east Lakewood Ranch, along State Road 70 and Lakewood Ranch Boulevard this year.

Vertical construction and infrastructure for The Villages of Lakewood Ranch South’s 5,100 units will begin in 2015 as well.

Coldwell Banker real estate agent Terri Henson expects prices will stabilize more than in 2014, because of the new construction and increase of supply to match the demand.

Lakewood Ranch is the strongest, most popular market in East County, said Alan Anderson, executive vice president of the Manatee Sarasota Building Industry Association.

After reviewing the permits pulled for 2014, Anderson also noticed homebuyers are gravitating toward Parrish and other areas surrounding the northern areas of Braden River.

The areas will continue to gain traction this year. The appeal of buying an East County home isn’t going anywhere in the foreseeable future, Anderson said.

“Lakewood Ranch is always a strong market,” Anderson said.

“There’s lots of land and it’s ready to be built on.”

Townhome prices are up about 11% since 2013.

Although apartment complexes received mixed reviews from Ranch residents last year, multifamily units are still a popular option.

Manatee County Permitting/ Development Services Section Manager Cindi Blake cited 46 permits were issued for multi-family unit construction in 2014, compared with 45 permits in 2013. Townhome sales prices have risen 11%.

Blake said the figure reflects projects housed east of Interstate 75.

Industry Association, dwellings with higher densities and residents who utilize public transportation or walk to their destinations are part of East County’s movement toward new urbanism.

“Lakewood Ranch is beginning to cater to everyone’s needs,” Anderson said. “I think it’s exciting we’re open to having these apartments and that type of living.”

Ranch rent rates are also rising.

Lost Creek at Lakewood Ranch rents cost $1,000 for one-bedroom units a year ago. Now, the 96% occupied complex charges $1,160 per month for a onebedroom unit.

EAST COUNTY — The clock is ticking, but Teri Hansen isn’t worried.

Raising $11 million within the next year may be challenging, but she’s confident.

“We will do it; we have to,” said Hansen, a volunteer board member for the Nathan Benderson Park Foundation, the future nonprofit tasked with funding infrastructure improvements for Nathan Benderson Park. “It’s too big an opportunity in the whole Sarasota/Bradenton region to not be successful.

“Everybody will use this park,” she

said. “It will have something for everyone and every day of the year, not just when there’s a regatta.”

Although Nathan Benderson Park already is set to host more than 40 events in 2015, its advocates are focused on building out the park, particularly on constructing a finish tower with offices and public bathrooms and a boathouse, in time for the World Rowing Championships to be held at the park in September 2017.

SANCA BRACES TO EXPAND COMMUNITY PROGRAMMING In 2015, Suncoast Aquatic Nature Center Associates will have a dual focus more than ever.

First, SANCA will focus on community-specific initiatives, such as an adaptive rowing program and rowing for veterans.

“That’s a big thing for us,” SANCA President Paul Blackketter said.

Blackketter also sees SANCA developing its volunteer base, so that volunteers are CPR-certified. Blackketter hopes volunteers then could be utilized throughout the county, should a natural or other disaster strike.

The organization also will work to promote multimodal trans-portation.

Nathan Benderson, founder of Benderson Development and for whom the park is named, biked to work until he died at 94 years old.

“It’s a legacy,” Blackketter said.

The park can host the regatta and other events without the finish tower or boathouse, but renting tents, portable restrooms and other facilities increases costs.

“We feel like that’s one of our mission statements. We want this to be ground zero for this effort.”

A walking/jogging trail runs around the lake at the park, and connects over to the Mall at University Town Center to the north. SANCA is evaluating safety options, such as blinking pedestrian lights and a changing speed limit sign, among others, now.

Plus, Blackketter said, the use of walking and bicycling will improve the efficiency of events at the park.

ECONOMIC SUPPORT In fiscal year 2014/2015, Suncoast Aquatic Nature Center and Associates will host 40 events. Each will prove an opportunity for SANCA to streamline and improve its processes before the park hosts the 2017 World Rowing Championships.

“We’re not going out seeking events any more. They’re coming to us,” SANCA President Paul Blackketter said. “It’s pretty crazy, actually.”

In fiscal year 2014, SANCA projected to have $8.4 million in economic impact. Numbers calculated through the Sarasota Visitors Bureau showed it generated more than $12.9 million. In fiscal year 2015, SANCA already has secured 15 more events than it projected.

to raise half this year, and take a plea to Tallahassee to secure a dollar-for-dollar matching grant.

Former Sen. Mike Bennett, a foundation board member, will make the request of the state at the appropriate time — hopefully sometime this year.

“We know we’ve got to have everything in place by sometime in 2016 to get everything in place by 2017 (for the World Rowing Championships),” Bennett said. “We are on nothing but a fundraising mission.”

Hansen adds: “A deadline is always a good thing.”

“The big challenge is just timing and focus,” Hansen said. “We’re all volunteers. When we get up in the morning, it’s not the first thing on our mind. It’s keeping our eyes on the ball.”

The foundation already has secured about $6 million, with donations ranging from $100 to thousands to millions.

Hansen, executive director of the Gulf Coast Community Foundation, said she has several gifts that are close to materializing and has her fingers crossed.

He’s tasked with bringing as much economic impact to the area as possible, while still serving the local community.

And having the finish tower and boathouse in place will mean that SANCA’s operations can become self-sustaining.

Blackketter says construction on the finish tower should start in late 2015, but the boathouse — what he calls the “icing on the cake” — will come later.

County to build bridges EAST COUNTY — Manatee County is driving forward with plans to improve traffic flow by constructing more roadway connections.

Kent Bontrager, project manager for Manatee County Public Works, said plans for both the Braden River Bridge, part of the 44th Avenue extension, and the Fort Hamer Bridge are moving forward, with design and/or construction starting in several months.

To the west, Manatee County will acquire land and complete design work required to advance construction of the 44th Avenue East extension, which, when finished, will extend 44th Avenue East from Cortez Road and its beaches in the west to Lakewood Ranch in the east.

Five segments of the roadway remain, including three in the East County area.

In December, county staff selected Woodruff and Sons to construct the portion of 44th Avenue East from 30th Street East to 45th Street East, at a cost of $10.4 million. The contract, which will go before Manatee County commissioners for approval Jan. 13, would guarantee work is completed in 18 months. Construction would start in February, Bontrager said.

The next segment to the east includes the Braden River Bridge project and runs eastward roughly to the northern end of Creekwood Boulevard. The U.S. Coast Guard approved the bridge Sept. 29, advancing the project by several months.

“Now, we can do the design and permitting of the section to Creekwood,” Bontrager said. “You won’t see much, but we’re (starting) design.”

“We pretty much know where the road is going to go, although there are some alternatives we’re looking at. It’s all within that 44th Avenue corridor,” he said.

Commissioners are expected to vote on the contract this month, he said.

Design work likely will take about 18 months. Manatee has budgeted about $33 million in total project costs.

And, the county also is working on the final future project, which would span from Cooper Creek Boulevard to just west of Lakewood Ranch Boulevard. The project is estimated to cost $29 million and will have significant land acquisition challenges. It will have to go over Interstate 75 and also over a water storage pond for Manatee County’s Waste Water Treatment facility off Lena Road.

which will cause delays,” Bontrager said of Upper Manatee River Road. “We’ll keep it minimal, but it will impact traffic.”

The project includes the widening of Upper Manatee River Road from State Road 64 to its sharp eastern bend from roughly a 22-foot road to a 24-foot roadway with 4-foot paved shoulders and a sidewalk on the west side.

“It brings it to standard, now that this is going to be a thoroughfare,” Bontrager said. “You wouldn’t think a foot does much, but it does; it enhances safety.”

Waterlefe resident Ken Bumgarner said some residents of the community still worry about the bridge’s impact.

“I know there are some residents who prefer not to have it built, but obviously that’s not going to be the case. We’re working with the county staff and commissioners to hopefully have a good procedure,” he said. “Time will tell. We’ll be interested to see how it goes.”

County officials say the bridge will provide a critical north-south alternative that improves EMS response, access to hospitals and improves level of service.

And while 2015 primarily will be a year of planning for most of the 44th Avenue roadway, it will be a year of beginnings for a bridge across the Manatee River, just north of the Waterlefe community.

After decades in Manatee County’s transportation plans — including in the county’s 1968 concept development plan — the county finally will begin construction on the Fort Hamer Bridge, which will connect Upper Manatee River Road to the south with Fort Hamer Park to the north.

County officials opened and reviewed bids for bridge construction Jan. 6.

“It’s a $30 million project,” Bontrager said. “It’ll probably take them about two weeks to review the bids.”

Once a contractor is selected, county commissioners will approve the contract.

Bontrager said he hopes construction on the two-lane bridge, which is slated to be 2,200 linear feet and have 10-foot shoulder/auxiliary lanes in both directions, will start in late February or early March.

“The road will always be open, but there could be some detours or flagmen,

Benderson promotes traffic management UNIVERSITY PARKWAY — In 2015, Benderson Development, co-owner of The Mall at University Town Center, hopes for approvals on some big time expansion.

And with that request comes a requirement to offset traffic impacts to the area’s already congested road network.

Benderson’s solution, as required in Sarasota County development approvals, is the establishment of a Transportation Management Association (TMA).

Todd Mathes, Benderson’s director of development, hopes that by using incentives to encourage mall employees to carpool, take public transit or ride bicycles to work, the TMA can modify the driving behavior of at least 16% of those employees.

This month, Benderson will send out a detailed survey to employees in The Mall at UTC and its neighboring UTC projects to help it figure out employee hours/shift changes, where employees are traveling from and other details that will help the TMA function as best as possible.

The TMA will use those results to determine: what modes of transportation people are already taking; obstacles; and what incentives would get them out of their cars.

Then it will begin implementing strategies and educating employees about their options.

Why is the TMA needed?

It’s triggered by Benderson’s request to add 600,000 square feet of retail and 100,000 square feet of office space by the mall.

Sarasota commissioners will consider the proposal Jan. 27.

The Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council OK’d the expansion in November.

In total, the mall and Benderson’s nearby University Town Center shopping centers have more than 4,000 employees.

strategies, while they aren’t unique, sometimes they aren’t known,” said Christopher Hatton, senior vice president of Kimley-Horn and Associates.

“The education is really important.”

Although carpooling, off-site parking, shuttles and public transit aren’t new ideas, they aren’t common in this market, Hatton said. The TMA’s role is to get people to use them.

“The more people do that, the more momentum will build,” he said, adding Benderson will monitor the effectiveness of strategies and modify them as needed. “It’s a continuously evolving process and that’s really the critical part of what the TMA does.”

Mathes says Benderson’s original mall site proposal included the additional space, in terms of projected traffic impacts. He said that space will house many national and local businesses who wanted space inside the mall, but couldn’t get it.

“There’s nothing but demand,” he says. “When you look at the list who wanted to be here — it’s long. There’s definitely a demand, which is great.”

If approved, Benderson will begin more detailed site plans for the project, which likely will build out over several years.

If not, Mathes says the TMA will still move forward.

“I guess the simple answer is that while we wouldn’t have a regulatory obligation to pursue the TMA, nothing changes, we’ll still move forward because it will be an amenity to the project,” he said.

In 2015, SMR will begin groundwork for its Villages of Lakewood Ranch South project and also will firm up design plans for portions of the project.

Bedford said he also will work to advance the construction of the Lakewood Ranch Boulevard and Lorraine Road extensions to Fruitville Road and assist SMR’s recent land purchases with planning and approvals, as needed.

PAUL BLACKKETTER As president of Suncoast Aquatic Nature Center Associates (SANCA), Paul Blackketter’s biggest job is, perhaps, to keep chaos somewhat organized.

The organization already has booked 40 events for fiscal year 2015, besting its projection of 33.

And, in 2015, it will host the 2015 World Cup Pentathlon and the USRowing National Championships.

In 2015, Blackketter said SANCA will focus on its everyday community programs, such as adaptive rowing (especially for veterans) and training its volunteer base to be CPR-certified.

The organization also will work to encourage bicycling and walking to the park, and ensure visitors, regardless of their mode of travel, are safe.

“We feel like this is one of our mission statements,” Blackketter said. “We want this to be ground zero for this effort. It also helps make events run more efficiently.”

Although new to the Manatee County School Board, East County resident Mary Cantrell is not afraid of delving into the issues.

Just two months into her new position, Cantrell is focused on embracing non-traditional classroom learning by catering to students’ unique needs. The result of educator flexibility with assignments and classroom culture will lead to the district’s overall goal of all schools receiving “A” grades at the end of each school year, she says.

“There’s no one-size-fits-all model for teaching,” Cantrell said. “We need to get students to embrace deeperlevel thinking while also working with teachers to create lesson plans students like and understand.”

The former Manatee Technical Institute director also hopes to “bridge the gap” between district level officials and teachers in classrooms.

Throughout the 12 months David Fink occupies the chairman position of the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance, he plans to prepare for the group’s future.

Fink says he’s helping the alliance become a “go-to resource” for business leaders by spearheading the launch of an online resource center that connects alliance members with links to tools, such as how to choose whether a new business owner should launch an LLC or another type of business.

The alliance’s website will have a tab or other indicator for the resource center, which Fink promises will be available in 2015.

By providing the resources to commonly asked questions, he believes members of the business community will soon have a more tangible way to see the value of their investment in the Alliance.

“We can impact the community in a really positive way with this project,” Fink said. “This will help set the foundation for the Alliance for the next 10 years.”

Not only will SMR begin building infrastructure for its long-awaited Villages of Lakewood Ranch South project and select which builders will develop on the property, but it also will begin design and construction on the 9-mile extension of Lakewood Ranch Boulevard from the project’s southern boundary to Fruitville Road.

“It’s a huge undertaking,” he said.

“Probably one of the biggest in the area.”

SMR also will begin renovations to the Lakewood Ranch Athletic Center, and start construction of the Royal Lakes Clubhouse in first quarter 2015.

Plus, SMR will market Lakewood Ranch further by opening an information center in The Mall at UTC. Jensen said two other big announcements are in the works, as well.

Church opens expansion The east campus of Bayside Community Church now hosts stadium seating and new ammenities for church members.

EAST COUNTY — Burnard Scott has followed Bayside Community Church from its very beginning.

He attended services held inside William H. Bashaw and Freedom elementary schools, which housed the church meetings from 2002 to 2010.

And when Bayside moved into its first facility, located at 15800 S. R. 64 E., Scott was there to congratulate the Rev. Randy Bezet.

As a guest speaker, Scott has visited the church quarterly for more than 12 years. But now as its pastor, Scott recently oversaw one of the church’s most significant milestones: the opening of its new 73,000-square-foot auditorium.

“It’s amazing how much the church has

And officiating those services will be Scott, who accepted the position as the church’s east campus pastor in August.

“I’ve had a unique perspective and relationship with this church over the years,”

local animal welfare organization.

Scott said. “I was a part of the celebration when the church was built, and now I’m able to watch it grow again. I’ve been able to watch the church closely all along.”

After the Saturday service, the new outdoor area, Central Park, will host an after party with activities and other happenings for families.

The park, located at the front of the new auditorium, features benches, palm trees and colorful plants.

Among the church’s most prominent renovations is the main auditorium. The expanded auditorium features stadium seating and two large flat screen televisions that show the day’s service.

The old auditorium will now house middle and high school ministries, said Kristin Becnel, executive director of creative ministry.

For Scott, the new auditorium’s capacity to hold more individuals will help Bayside live up to the “community” in its title.

“We don’t ever want to have to turn people away because we don’t have enough room for them,” Scott said. “We’re all about people, so it makes room for more people that don’t have relationships with Christ or who haven’t found a church in their community. This expansion provides us with a space to help those people, while also reaching out more into the

Other additions for the $16.5 million project include 10 classrooms, each with themes such as racing, dinosaurs and rainforests, for nursery through pre-kindergarten classes. A lagoon-themed play area, a café area and a connect center are all designed for new church members to meet with members of the congregation for socializing before and after services.

Church members raised $4.7 million for the projects and a unanimous church member matched that amount dollar for dollar, Scott said.

“I think there’s a lot of anticipation and excitement for all that’s going to happen when we open this facility,” Becnel said.

So, what’s next for the church?

In 2015, growth is still part of the agenda, said Scott, the east campus’ first pastor.

He hopes each of the 2,500 seats in Bayside’s auditorium will always be full and for the church to continue to reach deeper into the community.

titanic, stories-tall mural featuring the icons of circus past and present greets people as they enter the Tibbals Learning Center. Artifacts, paraphernalia and the 44,000-piece Howard C. Tibbals circus model line the halls of the center, smiling back at intrigued visitors.

But behind the big-top galore lies a hidden reservoir of scholarship and artifacts. The Ringling Archives are stowed away behind velvet ropes and pass codeprotected doors. The contrast of journeying from the colorful confines of the museum proper into the professional and scientific archives area is abrupt and shocking. But like any good wizard behind the curtain, someone has to supply the everyday work of conserving the circus history on display.

“We’re passing on the history of circus to the next generation,” says Kelly Zacovic, Tibbals collection specialist. “When I first began working here I was very awestruck. It really is incredible the variety and extent of the archive.”

The archives are home to various collections, including the Ringling Collection, John Ringling’s papers, the Circus Collection and the Howard C. Tibbals International Collection. The latter collection contains artifacts primarily from the circus’s European origins to the mid-20th century. It includes a parade of artifacts from the foundations of

CIRCUS STATISTICS ARCHIVE ARTIFACTS:

the modern circus: Philip Astley’s riding school in England that was the first modern circus to incorporate animal and acrobatic performances in a ring; Joseph Grimaldi, an English actor and comedian who popularized the current tradition of the whitefaced clown; prints of a panoply of exotic species of animals imported to Europe to perform in the circus; posters that are veritable works of pulp art; and political cartoons that employ circus imagery and symbolism to parody the political climate of the time.

Circus scholars and enthusiasts scour for new additions to the already extensive collection within the Ringling Archives.

Once the new artifacts arrive, they are released from their secure packaging and recorded and put in a queue waiting to be catalogued. They are catalogued and then placed in separate filing cabinets or boxes based on specific criteria. New objects are then placed with similar artifacts of diverse categories such as clowns, horse tricks or oddities.

“The reason why this space is here is for researchers and academics to have access to all of these documents that chart the history of the circus,” says Deborah Walk, the Tibbals curator of the circus. “It’s a complete chart of the circus from its origin to its highs and lows.”

The archive is a fortress of three

parts. The first is offices where archivists and conservation volunteers file paperwork and maintain communication with visiting scholars. Then there’s the storage facility itself, guarded by an imposing wall-sized cage with a seemingly endless array of bookshelves and file cabinets.

And the third — and most accessible to the public — segment of the archive is its digitization station.

The archives staff places various 2-D and 3-D objects on a clear white surface of a cameraand-computer apparatus. The historical relics are centered at the heart of a constellation of cameras that take photographs of the objects at every conceiv-

able angle. Those photographs are then uploaded to the Ringling’s online compendium for the public to access at any time.

“A lot of our collection is so old and fragile that we just can’t scan them normally,” says Zacovic. “The process has become so seamless that we’re able to scan from 100 to 200 objects a day.”

And the collection is as strange and elaborate as the circus itself.

The oldest piece of the archives is a print of Helena Antonia, a bearded female dwarf who was a member of Archduchess Maria of Austria’s court.

“I came here not knowing anything about the circus,” says Zacovic, who studied art history in college. “But working here I’ve

learned everything from hot air balloons used for trapeze and animal performances for huge spectacles to reading horse trick instructions from the 18th century.”

The Ringling Archives, in its scholarly fashion, encapsulates Sarasota’s identity as a multifaceted arts oasis. It is a constant reminder of the importance of recording the history of live arts and entertainment.

“People have always had the desire to stand out,” says Walk.

“And, for America, the circus grew up with America, and our entertainment is fleeting and of the moment, so we make sure to grasp and record the shadows of those original performances.”

Without the proper context, what’s transpiring on the brightly lit stage of the Cook Theatre in the Florida State University Center for the Performing Arts seems something out of an absurdist play. Actors and actresses are lined up, some portraying older characters, some acting as young children and one dressed as Santa Claus, and they take turns walking up to fake microphone stands and exchanging dialogue. Interspersed between the conversations is a random assortment of noises, bells and rings.

This isn’t Sarasota’s newest experimental theater troupe, but the Asolo Repertory Theatre Guild’s Play Readers ensemble performing its annual holiday staged play reading of the Lux Radio Theater version of “Miracle on 34th Street.”

Founded in 1974, the Asolo Repertory Theatre Guild originally functioned as the theater’s main fundraising body, organizing events that reached out to potential patrons and supporters. However, as the years went by and Asolo Rep incorporated a development staff and corporate sponsors, the guild had to adapt and re-evaluate its role in the theater. The approximately 200 members, both theaterlovers and former performers, act as the regional theater’s honorary family, morale boosters and educational ambassadors.

“Our mission now is to be informed ambassadors, modest fundraisers and, most of all, support education and participate in hands-on outreach,” says Patricia Anderson, president of the Asolo Theatre Guild. Anderson came across the guild by happenstance when a friend asked her to head a committee in the guild six years ago. She’s been an active member ever since.

The guild and the Asolo Rep Theatre form a symbiotic relationship, with the theater receiving the passionate efforts of a dedicated group of supporters and those supporters gaining access to some of the most respected and talented theater directors and performers in the country. Just recently, 65 guild members

brought their own dishes to the Asolo for a potluck dinner with the 60-plus members of the cast and crew of “South Pacific.” It was a warm welcome for the motley theatrical crew who are constantly traveling for each new engagement, and the curious guild members were able to inquire about the upcoming production and each theater artist’s rich experience onstage.

Changing lives through theater is the guild’s foremost goal. The group’s major educational initiative is “Put a Kid in a Seat.” The guild raises funds through various raffles and fundraisers to purchase tickets for area students to see productions. Busloads of area children are brought to the Asolo, with guild members chaperoning them while at the theater.

The guild hopes to plant the contagious seed of theater into young students’ fertile minds.

“Our mission really is to bring young people to the theater for their first live production,” says Jan Zipper, director of the guild’s Play Readers ensemble. “It’s fantastic to see their faces after they leave their first show.”

Guild members see themselves in these children; many can still pinpoint the exact moment they fell in love with the theater.

“I remember going to my first play in Baltimore when I was a kid,” says Anderson. “I was so transported and I’ve never forgotten that moment.”

As the Play Readers ensemble continues performing its radio play production of “Miracle on 34th Street,” the guild members’ collective love of theater is palpable. The performance is a celebration of the members’ shared love of the stage and of Asolo Rep, which has served as the organization’s sole home and purpose.

Patrons not only attend productions but rally every possible resource to be a part of and contribute to the artistic process.

“Sarasota prides itself on its arts,” says Anderson, “and I’m constantly trying to find the next potential theater-lover to replace me as an audience member and as an ambassador.”

// ‘As You Like It’ Like any good magician, Shakespeare has a big bag of tricks. “As You Like It,” the current Asolo Conservatory production, revels in some of his romantic comedy favorites.

These include cross-dressing, banishment, an enchanted forest and a massive marriage ceremony to end the play. Nobody does it like Shakespeare. But if you’ve ever seen a Shakespearean comedy, you’ve seen it before. How do you make the magic new?

Director Jonathan Epstein certainly asked himself this question.

His answer? Silks. Not as in costumes, as in circus-style silks — the kind of hanging silks from which Dolly Jacobs might glide.

Instead of a forest, Epstein employed ribbons of multicolored cloth and actors doing bits of business thereon.

I was dubious at first. Another Shakespearean gimmick? First caveman Shakespeare, now this. But it works.

“As You Like It” is a bravura display of verbal legerdemain. The action wrapped around the silks creates a counterpoint. While Shakespeare’s words razzle and dazzle, the swinging, climbing, acrobatic actors (all in good shape) do too. (Kudos for movement specialist Eliza Ladd for some moving work.)

It all serves the story — or the 90-minute edited version of the story. But the familiarity with Shakespeare’s tropes helps.

The play is a skein of many threads. It’s full of dense, then-contemporary references, including digs at the fads of toothpicks, pastoral sentimentality and the hilarious notion of eternal love. But it’s basically “Twelfth Night” meets “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Boiled down: The jealous usurper Duke Frederick (Kevin Barber) banishes his older brother, Duke Senior (Mark Comer), and his merry men to the magical forest of Arden. (There’s a nod to Robin Hood within the play). The noble Orlando (Josh James) gets on the Duke’s bad side as well and flees into the forest and joins the band. The irritable Duke also banishes his niece, Rosalind (Kelsey Petersen). She flees with her loyal cousin, Celia (Ally Farzetta). Orlando’s fallen in love with Rosalind — and vice versa. Rosalind does the logical thing, and with the aid of a fake moustache and cross-dressing pretends to be a man to test his love. Touchstone (Tom Harney), the fool, says witty things.

(He’s no fool.) The wandering, melancholy philosopher, Jacques (Chris Alexey Diaz), functions as Captain Bringdown and points

out everyone’s faults and everything that could possibly go wrong. He gets the famous “All the world is a stage” speech. At the end, basically everyone (with the exception of Jacques and a few shepherds) gets married.

There’s more to it than that, but that’s the bones and meat of the thing. Plot aside, it’s all about entertainment — the 17th century version of Bollywood. From fights to flights of fancy, this play has everything — including music. (Here, the songs work nicely to Jethro Tull-ish tunes by Barber.)

Pardon the dated reference, but Epstein reminds me of one of those plate spinners on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” He keeps the big plate of Shakespearean story spinning and then got a lot of other stuff up in the air (literally and figuratively). It’s a delightful tour de force that never comes crashing down.

The play’s grab bag of entertainment styles make it an ideal training ground for the conservatory’s second-year students.

Each young actor gets a set piece and the opportunity to shine. There isn’t room to list them all, so I’ll stick with standouts. Harney’s Touchstone is a manic, hip, 17th century comedian. James’ Orlando is high-spirited and fearless — a noble character in the original sense. Petersen’s Rosalind is feminine, then not feminine, then feminine-pretendingto-be-masculine-pretending-to-be-feminine as she puts Orlando through various mind games. Kim Stephenson has a funny bit as Phoebe, a love-struck shepherdess (Rosalind’s male persona being the love object) who gets tangled up in the silks and a soliloquy. Speaking of which, Farzetta hilariously delivers Celia’s soliloquy as a rap ditty (one of many creative anachronisms).

Diaz’s Jacques smartly conveys the mind of a philosopher. He sees too much and knows too much and doesn’t trust the giddy happiness of the feel-good forest. That’s just a sample of the stunning performances. Kudos also to Danielle Renella and Rob Glauz for their outlandish costumes and Brandon Maldonado and Kelly Smith for their otherworldly sound and light. No weak links at all.

Epstein (a Shakespearean language guru) wove Shakespeare’s words through a variety of contemporary accents and idioms. He translated the action through a Cirque du Soleil sensibility. In the hands of the right director cast and crew, Shakespeare never gets old. He was in good hands here.

That’s magic enough.

the biggest influence on me. They lived on a farm in New York, and as a kid I’d go there in the summertime. My grandfather had a garden. They’d do these pickled beets and make other things from the garden.

WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BECOME A CHEF? I don’t have a

romantic I-am-a-chef-because-of story. I do remember those summers in New York as a precursor and maybe not realizing it at that age or time period. After high school I didn’t have much of a direction so I took a job in a restaurant and felt that energy. It was something I hadn’t experienced before, and that was exciting. The chef was tough, but I looked up to him and said, “Hey, maybe I could try that,” and I did.

nary Institute of America in New York when I was 19. I graduated from the four-year bachelor’s program, which was more business oriented. From there I went to New York City because I wanted to get experience; to get beat up and have tough jobs. I basically knocked on people’s doors and said I’d work for free hoping to get a job and I did. I was in New York City for two years and came back

here tired and burnt out. I was in need of more of a vacation job to recoup, which ended up being at this location under previous ownership. It was great because I had full reign in the front and the back.

Then the owners kind of fizzled out in the bad economy and ended up closing the doors. I had moved on at that point but approached them and worked out a deal to take this over five years ago.

DO YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST MEAL YOU COOKED AS A CHEF?

Yes, a sticky, gloopy risotto for my parents on my first spring break from school. You know, you think you’re hot stuff and want to make something cool, and it didn’t turn out right so that was an epic fail.

But it was my parents, so it was OK. And luckily I’ve gotten a little better than that.

WHERE DO YOU GET INSPIRATION FOR YOUR MENU AND SPECIALS?

We do the classic breakfast dishes, but our niche is just outside of that box, so while we have the eggs Benedict and the French toast and all of those things that you associate with breakfast, we wanted to bring different elements.

The inspiration for that goes back to my farm days in New York and true raw ingredients in their purest form. So we came up with different flavor profiles that would work in that sense: blackberries

and lemon on the pancakes, eggs Benedict with mushrooms and truffles. Personally, I stay up on the industry with cooks magazines and Pinterest, and for Christmas I got the Noma cookbook, which is a restaurant in Demark whose chef is probably the best in the world right now.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE MEAL?

I’d probably say the most satisfying thing for me would be roasted bone marrow with some crusty bread and sea salt.

DO YOU COOK AT HOME? I do cook

at home. We just remodeled the kitchen, so it is a lot easier for me because I have all my gadgets there. We designed it like a test kitchen for me. And since my job has changed with the two locations and I am not doing a lot of the cooking (at the restaurant), my home is my area to go where it’s quiet and I can cook.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE KITCHEN GADGET? I use my 10-inch global

knife the most, but my favorite gadget would be my sous vide machine, which is a water bath.

It circulates water to a perfect temperature. It’s an old technique, but it’s very popular right now, and it essentially cooks things in their own juices under vacuum.

WHAT IS ON YOUR GADGET WISH LIST? A Pacojet ice cream and gelato machine.

IF YOU WERE TRAPPED ON A DESERT ISLAND AND COULD TAKE THREE INGREDIENTS WHAT WOULD THEY BE? I am a simpleton really

… if I could have an egg, a potato and a tomato, I could do a lot with that.

More than 1,000 people attended the Celebration Concert at Sarasota Opera House featuring the PMP String Orchestra lead by Conductor Itzhak Perlman and the PMP Chorus lead by Chorus Master Patrick Romano. Following the concert, 350 guests joined Itzhak and Toby Perlman, the PMP faculty and students at Michael’s On East for an intimate evening of food and conversation.

My New Year’s resolution is stop ling. Play with my dog more offton. Help my mom clean. To be pashint. To care about others and stand up to bullys. Have more friends.

Play more. Be happy.

Arianna Liemann, third grade, Robert E. Willis Elementary School My New Year 2015 resolutions are: 1. To cook dinner for my family. My plan is to help my mom fix up dinner and follow resupeys.

2. To do a split. My plan is to stretch every day. Also to make a scedgual so I know how im doing. I will try my best to acomplush it.

3. To finnish my long list of chores. My plan is to do five of my chores after I get out of school.

Music on Main returns with blues ensemble Motown and blues enthusiasts enjoyed food, drinks and performances by Soul Sensations Friday, at Music on Main.

Attendees of the free monthly concert strolled down Lakewood Ranch Main Street, where craft vendors and other activities were stationed throughout the evening. Proceeds from the night benefited Foundation for Dreams.

Girls suit up for football The young ladies of Lakewood Ranch High School hit the school's football field Dec. 16 for the annual Filly Football games. Freshmen through seniors battled on the field throughout the evening, as teenage boys coached the girls through the 20-minute football games from the sidelines.

Freshmen played against juniors, and sophomores competed against seniors. At the end of the night the seniors clinched the win.

the puzzle. Gagnon’s longest piece, which he stores at home, is a 25-foot-long maze.

“It can be very complicated,” Gagnon says. “In longer ones, I’ll leave markers so I can keep my place.

“They’re really done like Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg in the 1950s,” he says.

“Their concept for writing was you just write and you don’t edit yourself.”

Because of his varied interests, he sometimes has trouble picking which art form to work on that day.

“I have a terrible ability to pick one; I just cycle through,” Gagnon said.

GREENFIELD PLANTATION — Mark Gagnon’s mind goes faster than his hands. But the Greenfield Plantation resident doesn’t have problems focusing on creating artistic mazes.

Gagnon works at a framing shop by day. But he’s also a poet/author, singer/ songwriter and an artist. As an artist he creates maze wall art, however, he most often uses his designs for greeting cards, which he calls aMAZEin’ Greetings.

He made the first maze — a Christmas card — for his father in 2000. Each maze contains hidden icons or drawings — faces, aliens, places and other things that pop into Gagnon’s mind as he draws. One such drawing hangs in St. Armands Art Gallery above the Columbia Restaurant, alongside Gagnon’s acrylic pieces and an abstract of Nik Wallenda walking the tightrope.

Each piece is different, and each one is solvable. Gagnon delights in the drawings hidden within each, pointing out various faces, instruments and other relics. Each also includes Gagnon’s initials — MSG. “It’s therapeutic for me to do them; it shows the clutter in everyone’s mind,” Gagnon says. “It’s like the ultra-focused continual doodle. There’s so many great things hidden in there.”

He starts each piece with the word, “start,” which tends to be elaborate — perhaps formed to look like the silhouette of Batman, the head of Superman or a group of alien faces.

Then Gagnon works systematically, breaking the puzzle into quadrants.

Once he’s completed the maze and hidden icons within it, he blocks off paths so there’s only one way to start and finish

Carol Goodkin shares about her favorite dining and shopping spots in Charleston, S.C. Early the Wednesday morning before Thanksgiving, we embarked on a day’s journey to our favorite Southern city, Charleston, S.C., located more than 400 miles from Sarasota.

Charleston is a gracious, beautiful and history-seeped city. Grand old oak trees draped in Spanish moss line the streets, and a panoramic waterfront with many stately homes embraces the city. We continued our journey north to visit lifelong friends and family in New Jersey, before returning home Dec. 15.

Carol Goodkin and her husband, Leonard, moved eight years ago to Sarasota and moved two years ago to Lakewood Ranch. The couple’s strongest passions include traveling and cooking.
