lassical music depicts the sweeping crusades, conflicts and plagues of long ago as well as it does the personal romances, adventures and warmth of everyday life. However, its vaulted position among the arts often gives it a misleading and foreboding air of incomprehensibility. This is classical music’s modern conundrum: how to win young new audiences without alienating older generations saturated with the classics of Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms.

// ARTS&ENTERTAINMENT classical music’s rich heritage. In her first full season of programming, Tali is leading a two-night performance Nov. 20 and 21, at Holley Hall, of Heiner Goebbels’ 2007 work, “Songs of Wars I Have Seen.”

A collaborative theatrical and musical mashup, the piece depicts the everyday happenings of women during World War II through the text of Gertrude Stein’s 1945 memoir, “Wars I Have Seen.”

With an intimate setting at Holley Hall, a reduced chamber orchestra, speaking roles for a few female orchestra members, plus Goebbels’ baroque chorales interspersed among jazzy riffs, “Songs of Wars I Have Seen” is rewriting the standard Sarasota Orchestra experience.

“This is a new approach to musicmaking in orchestra performance history that in general is a new step toward the immersive, where people are a part of it, people can relate to it,” says Tali.

“It doesn’t leave you cold.”

Tali has performed the piece several times in London, New York City, Seattle and Barcelona, but feels an added sense of urgency and excitement to bring it to her new home of Sarasota. She views the event as a gateway to offering more challenging works for audiences and musicians alike.

“There’s a lot of variety for me in the music, and you have to stay on your toes,” says RoseAnne McCabe, double bass player and one of the featured orchestra members speaking Stein’s words. “Performing text and music is special and it’s terrifying all at the same time, but there are so many exciting layers that all fit together.”

Perhaps the most thrilling and potentially groundbreaking part about Goebbels’ work is that it is an example of modern art’s growing collaborative sensibility. Tali wants to incorporate the recent multifaceted evolution of classical music to add interest and variety to the orchestra’s traditional Masterworks series.

“We classical musicians went through a lifetime’s worth of education, and I think we deserve to express ourselves in a more contemporary manner instead of rigidly performing the classics,” says Tali. “It’s a new time, and we should figure out what our language is today.”

The subject of World War II, usually fodder for sweeping romantic suites and reflective Steven Spielberg movies, may not immediately sound like

the best foundation for a transformative piece of classical music. But “Songs of Wars I Have Seen” uses Stein’s diary-style slices of domestic life. These glimpses range from the humdrum (listening to the radio and reciting Shakespeare for entertainment) to the severe (not knowing from where one’s next meal will come). It’s far from a neverending fermata of terror, but rather a duet in life.

“Stein is writing about mundane things and private thoughts,” says Matsusaka, “but that’s how the work invites you in just to hear the words on top of and among the music.”

This warmth of the everyday, even during the most tragic of circumstances, is also represented musically by Goebbels’ use of the urban sounds.

“Goebbels is a lot of fun because he literally composes just like if you stuck your head out into the main square somewhere in a city like Tokyo or New York City,” says Tali.

This combination of commonplace

sounds, accompanied by the composer’s baroque chorales and placed in the confines of the orchestra hall, thaws the misunderstood coldness of classical music into a multisensory experience. It’s this paradox that Tali hopes will become contagious.

“Don’t be afraid of music,” says Tali.

“It is a part of us. For me, this performance is part of growing together as an orchestra and together as a society.”

Ringling Museum speaks language of exhibition ‘Behind Closed Doors’ offers an intimate peek into the lives of Spanish-American colonists — including how they spoke.

Through its exhibits, galleries and objects curated from old masters and contemporary artists alike, the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art acts like a time machine.

It informs patrons of the way things were, while creating a dialogue using the artistic portals of inspiration and expression.

The Ringling’s newest collection continues this role by focusing on the time when America became America.

“Behind Closed Doors: Art in the Spanish American Home, 1492-1898” is the first major exhibition in the United States that explores the genesis of the modern American character through the artwork, objects, clothes and possessions of Spanish and British colonists and indigenous peoples. It spans from Christopher Columbus’ momentous first steps into the New World to Cuba gaining independence from Spain in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. To lend the vast amount of objects an added layer of authenticity and intimacy, the Ringling is using its newest initiative: docent tours in Spanish.

The museum believes the Spanish descriptions of the personal momentos and objects will help bring them to life.

“Our long-term goal is to be able to offer a variety of languag-

es,” says Maureen Zaremba, curator of education. “This was our first exhibition where we were able to offer bilingual description labels in English and Spanish.”

But when searching through their ranks of regular docents, Zaremba and Beth Mattison, Selby education fellow, could not find a tour guide comfortable or fluid enough in Spanish to lead groups through the exhibit’s immense treasure trove.

But they didn’t have to look too far to find their solution — New College of Florida’s humanities department. Five eager students fluent in Spanish volunteered for docent training.

“I talked about and taught the students different techniques of giving tours and working in the museum,” says Mattison. “I helped them think more about different manners of presentation and public speaking skills that can be implemented in tours, but really toward anything they might be doing in the future.”

Sarah Scully and Yates Gibson, two of the New College docents, have been learning and speaking Spanish for a combined 22 years and are comfortable conversing on the hyper-specific material within the “Behind Closed Doors” exhibit. However, the public-speaking aspect was a

little intimidating.

“I think that one of the things we tried to focus on is that even though there is a performance aspect and there is that spotlight, we’re trying to have a dialogue with the people interacting with us and the art in the tour,” says Gibson.

Though it may not seem like a huge difference, the added touch of hearing the artwork and dif-

ferent sections of the exhibit described in Spanish adds another layer of connectedness for the viewer.

Navigating through the exhibition’s approximately 160 objects and paintings is a daunting task.

However, thanks to the curatorial efforts of the Ringling and the exhibit’s home institution, the Brooklyn Museum, visitors follow a path that begins with the

colonial public square and progresses into the increasing intimacy of a standard Spanish elite family’s home, salon, bedroom and family chapel.

“The whole experience gives a better understanding of how people lived back then,” says Scully. “Going through the rooms where men and women relaxed, drank, smoked, prayed and had their lovers is very interesting.”

FST provides theatrical learning experience Through its educational programs and seasons of professional equity productions, FST provides ample avenues for kids and adults to get their start.

Located on a mellow corner of North Palm Avenue, the Florida Studio Theatre and its multivenue facility are a hive of activity preparing for various playwriting, improv, cabaret, mainstage and special events through its season. Because of the constant buzz of people, patrons and participants, it is easy to miss FST’s major and most influential function: education.

“We are delighted when someone finds an artistic home here and is sparked to seek a career in theater,” says Beth Duda, director of education at FST. “But our goal is to create a place we can share in our common humanity, develop storytelling skills and an emotional place where we can understand the world a little better.”

And for three women, FST was just such a place of personal discovery of themselves and the roots of their theatrical passion. Nicole Wee, 34, Rebekah Small, 25, and Savannah Sinclair, 17, each fostered and experienced her first professional venture in the dramatic arts during various professional productions. Now, their paths have converged for FST’s opening mainstage production of the season: the big-hair, colorful, cross-dressing, civil rights musical, “Hairspray.”

Wee, a costume designer and costume coordinator for the current production, found her path into theater out of a love of animation powerhouse Pixar.

“I knew that Pixar liked to hire people in the artistic division who had a theater background, aka acting experience, which I knew I wasn’t interested in,” says Wee. “So I took costume history thinking it is ample theater experience.”

After graduating from Brown University, Wee was looking for a place to intern, and a trusted professor steered her in the direction of FST. “This was basically where I learned everything to be a theater professional,” says Wee. “We did it all: making costumes, being backstage, fittings, designing, and I learned how to make clothes here. This was my first big theater experience.”

Small, assistant stage manager, is a Sarasota native. She stumbled upon FST after reading an advertisement for a stage management internship.

Through that internship she found her artistic home and sharpened her skills.

“I definitely grew as a stage manager here,” says Small. “I became more correct and more assertive when things needed to get done. It has all been a great learning experience for

Sinclair, a junior at Booker High School and an ensemble member in “Hairspray,” was raised in her mother’s old dance studio in Sarasota. She has been performing on stage throughout her childhood at FST and is grateful for the professionalism FST’s equity productions offer.

“I’m used to working with high school students and community theaters, and I love those people, but I notice that I get really upset when things are going off track or behind,” says Sinclair. Although she was intimidated at first, Sinclair has gotten used to the method to the madness of musical rehearsal.

The stars were shining brightly this past Sunday afternoon when Anu Tali led the Sarasota Orchestra in a blockbuster of an all-Russian program that was enough to outshine Sirius, seriously. Shostakovich, Prokofiev and Mussorgsky are great Eastern stars themselves. Put them together with Tali, prize-winning pianist Alexander Toradze and the dazzling musicians of the Sarasota Orchestra in a program seemingly designed to show off the ensemble’s stellar players, and you have enough dazzle to light up the musical skies.

In Shostakovich’s suite from his film score, “The Gadfly,” the warm and silvery sound of the strings, especially in the gorgeous, well-known “Romance,” with concertmaster Daniel Jordan’s beautiful solo, was moving and exhilarating. Sounding like a Russian John Williams (who may well have emulated Shostakovich in some of his works), “The Gadfly” uses colors from muted to scorching, with the militaristic sound of Russian soldiers’ boots tramping across the Steppes like sure-footed avengers. Yet Tali brought out the sensitivity of the composer’s romantic side, too, making this a beautifully sculpted performance.

Toradze, who’s known Tali for many years from their studies and work in St. Petersburg (Russia) but hasn’t, until this weekend, performed with her, is an all-body, muscular pianist of the Russian Bear tradition. Yet he never bangs or uses his strength and emotional zest to show off. His performance Sunday of the exuberant Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 3 was thrilling. Tali and the Orchestra supported his vigorous performance, while never underestimating the composer’s penchant for sudden mood, color and tempo changes, and knitted the transitions together seamlessly. This is a brash, bold work that takes strength from everyone concerned; a blockbuster that’s both exhausting and exhilarating, and the fact that Toradze has recorded it and Prokofiev’s other four piano concertos, with no one less than Valery Gergiev, made the piece feel very much at home in all hands.

One of the interesting things about this particular concerto is its resemblance to Poulenc’s music for orchestra and piano(s).

Or, maybe it’s the other way around. But no matter how you look at it or hear it, Prokofiev and Poulenc share a certain insouciance, a humor that’s very, very French. Poulenc’s is

more tongue-in-cheek, while Prokofiev’s is mocking and sardonic. But the wit is there, and Toradze’s mastery of the style combined with Tali’s musical understanding and the Orchestra’s prowess made this an extraordinary performance.

Toradze, whom audience and orchestra members alike deservedly cheered, gave us a gift of two brief but impeccably played encores by Prokofiev: an excerpt from “Vision Fugitive” (which he called “The Clock” because of its ticking qualities) and the wild finale of the composer’s Sonata No. 7. He immediately handed the flowers brought to him onstage to violinist Jennifer Best Takeda, who looked both pleased and nonplussed.

The concert concluded with a star-studded portrait of Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition.” Originally written for piano, it was Ravel’s orchestration that brought it into the popular spotlight. Interestingly, Tali decided to go back to the original piano score and, in doing so, kept Ravel’s insightful colors but also dug deeply into the music to make this performance purer and more transparent than many we’ve heard in the past.

One of the many stars of this “Pictures” was a gigantic bell — weighing in at a hefty 500 pounds — and brought to Sarasota on loan from the Dallas Symphony, specially for this resounding concert. And resound it did. One musician joked she thought it was the Liberty Bell without the crack, but, when principal percussionist George Nickson struck it with his mighty clapper, we thought heaven’s gates had opened. And our ears are still ringing.

Yellow flowers were brought to conductor Anu Tali, who, with a twinkle in her eye, added her bouquet, again, to Takeda’s growing collection. But, there was more. Tali gave us a Russian encore, “Winter Roads,” from Georgy Sviridov’s “The Snowstorm.”

It swirled like a scene from “Anna Karenina” but ended happily with an entrancing flourish on the celeste, which the Orchestra’s pianist, Jonathan Spivey, deftly played.

David Mamet’s “The Water Engine” began life as a radio drama in 1977. The FSU/Asolo Conservatory has fired it up again. Director Greg Leaming stages it in a weird, indeterminate nether space. Part of the stage is decked out as a radio studio; actors at mics read their parts and a Foley artist creates sounds. On the rest of the stage, other actors perform in synch to the implied radio show, their semi-staged vignettes revealed in cones of spotlight.

The mashup of media and representations nicely fits the play’s subject: one of the classic, all-American conspiracy theories.

Namely, an engine that runs on water suppressed by a corporate cabal.

Here, Mamet gives a name to the suppressed inventor — Charles Lang (Josh James). A brilliant but poor punch press operator, Lang builds the engine in his spare time in Chicago in 1934. Ironically, the Windy City is simultaneously hosting the World’s Fair — the Century of Progress International Exposition. That fair is a quasi-religious celebration of American inventors and their inventions. The real America proves less worshipful. When Lang approaches a patent lawyer (Chris Alexey Diaz), all his paranoid fears come true. The lawyer rats him out to a stooge of unnamed corporate interests (Jordan Sobel). Powerful forces attempt to suppress Lang’s invention — and kidnap his blind sister (Lisa Woods) as leverage. In a Frank Capra movie, the fat cats would fail and the underdog (played by Jimmy Stewart, natch) would triumph. But this isn’t a Capra movie. The underdog ends badly.

Mamet intercuts this straightforward fable with a surreal montage, zipping back and forth between fragments of Lang’s

This play explores the shadowlands.

Expect no defined statements. Expect a staccato fable with no definite conclusions. This is early Mamet, with a heavy debt to Brecht, Beckett and Pinter. You think his language is telegraphic now?

The dialogue here makes “Oleanna” and “Glengarry Glen Ross” seem loquacious.

So what’s the moral of this fable?

That’s in the shadows, too.

Mamet’s play isn’t a literal expose of the water engine conspiracy, any more than Kafka’s “The Trial” was about a bad court decision in the Weimar Republic.

Call it a comparison and contrast between the American Dream and the American Nightmare. But don’t call it a mere fable …

As surreal as the play is, it speaks of reality. And, no, not the reality of a water engine. The reality of those who would suppress it.

Such science literacy as I possess tells me a water engine wouldn’t work; the catalytic energy needed to split hydrogen from oxygen would exceed the energy released in burning the resulting hydrogen. But conspiracies against inventors do work.

The suppressions of Nikola Tesla’s later inventions can’t be proved. But RCA tycoon David Sarnoff’s suppression of Philo Farnsworth’s television technology and Edwin Armstrong’s frequency modulation are historic facts. In 1954, a beaten, broken Armstrong took a walk outside his 13th floor apartment window in his best suit.

The result wasn’t conspiracy theory but a coroner’s report. Look it up.

Sarasota Yacht Club has not been occupied by a brighter or more cheerfully dressed crowd as it was Monday, Nov. 3, for the first Lilly Pulitzer Fashion Show and Luncheon. The décor, which Junior League of Sarasota designed, consisted of patterned Lilly fabrics, sparkly gold pineapples and sand dollars. Scattered throughout the foyer were dress forms modeling vintage Lilly, found at local Goodwill stores. Guests mingled and sipped “Tipsy Flamingos” during social hour, which was followed by a luncheon and fashion show featuring looks provided by Lilly Pulitzer St. Armands.
