Manasota Goodwill will open a 40,000-squarefoot retail store in Ranch Lake Plaza in March.

A sandhill crane will soon represent Lakewood Ranch’s developer at local events in the community.

EAST COUNTY — As Manasota Goodwill President Bob Rosinsky stands in front of the former Sweetbay location on State Road 70 and looks toward the vacant space, he sees a dream fulfilled.

Goodwill is just months away from realizing a 15-year vision to open a retail center in the Lakewood Ranch community.

The Rosinksy nonprofit expects to open in the more than 40,000-squarefoot space in Ranch Lake Plaza in March.

“We’re thrilled to get a retail presence in Lakewood Ranch,” Rosinsky said. “The people who live and work in Lakewood Ranch have been coming to our donation centers in Lakewood Ranch since we opened them and asking when we are going to open a retail center.”

The new facility, which is undergoing interior demolition and renovations, will be a full retail center with a community room and job connection area. It also will have a special training area for individuals with special needs.

“This is going to open up retail to a whole new customer base,” Rosinsky said, noting Goodwill patrons span a variety of socioeconomic levels. “We’re excited. It’s close enough to the Lakewood Ranch business area. That gives us a doorway into a compelling retail area.”

Goodwill Manasota currently operates about 35 locations, including donation and retails centers, spanning from Sarasota to Arcadia. However, the closest retail center to the proposed location is the Sarasota Goodwill Bou-

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Lakewood Ranch has a new chick in town.

And its red head, long skinny legs and feathery beige coat leave little to be desired except one thing — a name.

Lakewood Ranch developer Schroeder-Manatee Ranch now has a mascot, a sandhill crane.

“It’s the new member of our SMR family,” said Antonio Saviano, director of sports for Premier Sports Campus, a 140-acre sports campus owned by SMR. “We don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl yet.”

SMR officials will kick off a “name the crane” contest for the bird when it makes its public debut at the Nov. 7 Music on Main, on Lakewood Ranch Main Street. The crane will come wearing a “Name me” T-shirt to promote the contest.

Rachel Gray, events, promotions and website manager for SMR, said the crane will be used to promote Lakewood Ranch in general.

In the East County, Goodwill has one book store location in Tara, at 7200 55th Ave. E., Bradenton, and donation centers at: 2563 Lakewood Ranch Blvd., Lakewood Ranch (Crowder Plaza); 9126 Town Center Parkway, Lakewood Ranch; 8490 Lockwood Ridge Road, Sarasota; and 4720 State Road 64 E., Bradenton.

Goodwill opened its new corporate campus, which includes a retail store, an international training center and administrative offices, near the intersection of U.S. 301 and State Road 70 over the summer.

Rosinsky said Goodwill began negotiating for the former Sweetbay space shortly after Sweetbay closed in February 2013. He had hoped to open the space to customers in late 2014, but negotiations took longer than expected.

Rosinsky said interior demolition is underway and remodeling should start soon.

“You’ve got issues with floors and ceil-

ings and lights and technology and paint and walls,” Rosinsky said. “It’s like remodeling a house, but 100 times more complicated.”

The East County area has been on Goodwill’s long-range plan as a location for a retail store for at least 15 years, he said.

EAST COUNTY — Parents and students: Prepare for more flashcards and late-night cram sessions this school year.

Manatee County students will be tested more than ever before.

The beginning of the school year also meant the beginning of the implementation of state mandates and the Florida Standards, also known as Common Core.

With these comes more tests as well as a shift in testing philosophy.

The changes, though, have created concerns with the new testing policies.

Manatee School Board Chairwoman Julie Aranibar said the flip side of the tests’ confidentiality is it prevents teachers from “strictly teaching to the test.”

Instead, the tests are a measure of what students learned.

“If this is really a final exam at the end of a course, then no one should be surprised by what’s on that test,” said Aranibar. “The test shows what you’re expected to learn this year and what you should know.”

Another issue with the new exams, Barber says, is they take students out of the classroom, which interrupts teachers’ ability to prepare their students. This becomes increasingly important as the district ties teachers’ pay with students’ performance on exams.

In the past, teachers gave final exams at their discretion based on their lesson plans and the curriculum. But starting this year, the state has shifted the testing focus to End of Course (EOC) exams to judge students’ proficiency in nearly every course they take.

Proponents of the new testing say it will help prepare students for careers and college. Testing starts in voluntary pre-kindergarten, during which students will take three assessments. Those tests increase in both rigor and quantity up to 12th grade.

The district is in the process of creating 900 EOC exams, for music, physical education and other classes. The district is also expanding the English Language Arts writing assessment to four additional grade levels. Students in fourth through 10th grades will now take that assessment.

The tests can make up a significant portion of a students’ final grade, but the only EOC students must pass to graduate is the one for Algebra 1.

CHANGING ASSESSMENT

• To comply with state mandates, the Manatee County School District must create 900 End of Course exams by the spring. Although the state requires the additional tests, the district must fund the estimated cost — $25,000 per test, or $22.5 million total for all the tests — to field test the assessments.

The face of testing will also change, as the switch to computer-based testing continues. This school year, fifth-grade students will take writing assessments on the computer rather than on paper.

“We’re using an online assessment tool — iReady — to introduce computer skills to students at a younger age,” Deputy Superintendent of Instruction Diana Green said. “The students will be able to read passages on their computers and write responses on their keyboards.”

Aside from the way students take tests, what they are tested on will also change — the Florida Standards demand more rigorous classwork, homework and tests.

For writing assessments, elementary students will no longer write to a prompt. Rather than answering a question by writing a five-paragraph essay, students will cite text from the readings in their responses.

• Fifth-, eighth- and 10th-grade students will take the most tests this school year.

• Fourth- through 10th-grade students are required to take a 90-minute English Language Arts writing assessment this year.

The Sarasota Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization Monday unanimously approved changes to the fiscal year 2015 transportation improvement plan. It designated $46.8 million in Manatee County and $36.2 million in Sarasota County in fiscal year 2015 for the construction of a diverging diamond design at the interchange.

The MPO also voted unanimously to include the $83.2 million project in its 2035 long-range transportation plan.

School Board candidates field audience questions EAST COUNTY — Two women with different backgrounds, hometowns and perspectives on school security and other educational issues now have the same interest — earning your vote.

nibar and District 5 seat candidate Mary Cantrell are in the final days of pre-election speeches, debates and public forums.

Aranibar, a former histologist and East County schools volunteer whose children attended school in Manatee County, and

Cantrell, the former 18-year director of Manatee Technical Institute, responded to the public’s questions Oct. 24, during the Lakewood Ranch Republican Club’s luncheon.

Q: When you were at MTI, is it true that there were financial issues and financial records weren’t audited?

A: Everything on MTI’s record has been audited. We’ve always had clear audits. We never missed an audit. A new accounting system was started that wasn’t running parallel to our old system.

Training went off the track and auditors weren’t able to audit some of the records, and they couldn’t figure a lot of things out. I can tell you with a clean conscience, everything at MTI has been audited annually. We’ve had clear audits, and occasionally would have notes on things that could’ve been done better. We always implemented those changes. There has never been a discrepancy with money.

Q: If there were to be a vote tonight, would you vote the same way on the schools security contract?

A: I wouldn’t have to because what came out of all that was an understanding that all partners need to come together. As far as the contract being rushed, if you go back to the audit investigation, it was cited that our elementary schools have security weaknesses. The issue has to do with campuses and how we lock our doors. You haven’t heard from principals and parents on their feelings on security; you’ve heard from a minority group that didn’t like the contract. It was in our strategic plan. It won’t come forward the same way again. You’ll see an agreement where we all work together, which is how we should work for our children.

Q: Why were you fired from MTI? A: There were reasons why my contract wasn’t renewed. There was a situation where one of my employees had her car worked on at the school. When they worked on the car, they told her that her tires weren’t safe; she couldn’t be driving on them. The (repair) would cost $600, and she didn’t have the money.

The assistant director tried to work out a payment plan with her that I didn’t know about. I knew an employee had financial troubles and I took out my checkbook and wrote a check. There were other episodes, but I accept the consequences of my actions.

Q: Do you live in Lakewood Ranch?

A: Yes, I live in Lakewood Ranch. I rent the whole house. It’s not my intention to be a renter. When I’m elected, I will purchase vacant land for a house.

Q: Should Manatee County have a true vocational technical school?

A: Yes, we should have a dedicated true vocational tech high school. This issue is very personal to me. I went to a vocational high school. I didn’t have money to go to college on my own. Technical school saved my life. It started me on a career pathway. It wasn’t like MTI, where the average student is 28 years old.

If a student can’t read by third grade, they’re floundering in middle school, and we’re baby-sitting them in high school.

Q: Why should voters fire the incumbent?

A: Manatee Technical Institute is in this district, so I’ve had a lot of dealings with the school district over my 18 years there.

There’s a climate for change. I have a can-do attitude and I believe I can handle whatever you put in front of me. That’s the way I’ve lived my life. MTI was crumbling when I got there, and I said I wanted it to be a nationally recognized school, and that’s what we’ve done. That’s what I want to do for the school board.

I know what my role is; it’s not to be a teacher. My role is to make sure the classrooms are taken care of properly and our children are safe. Somehow, we’ve lost focus of the big picture — students need an education. I’ve been dedicated to that cause for 20 years.

You have me on the line for the next four years to make sure the budget and other things get done right. It’s important to remember the history of how we got here and how we get out of here. You already know what you got the last four years.

EAST COUNTY — When The Rev. Peter Young looks at a site plan for Church of Hope’s property, he sees people where boxes and bubbles depict future buildings and little league baseball fields.

And on the spot marked for an assistedliving facility, Young sees an opportunity for members of Hope to minister to the elderly on the site at 1560 Wendell Kent Road, Sarasota.

“How cool is it if grandma can see her grandson playing little league, or what if volunteers take residents to the ballpark?”

Young said. “It’s to give them the quality of life. Churches have the opportunity to enhance their quality of life. It excites me.

I see this as being the model.”

Church of Hope this month formalized its agreement with Omega Communities, a Birmingham, Ala.-based company that is partnering with large churches to build assisted-living facilities on or near their property.

Through the partnership, Omega orchestrates a deal between investors, the church and other parties, while the church provides land and/or volunteers for the facility. Life Care Services, which cares for more than 30,000 seniors through communities it manages and owns nationwide, will operate the facility.

Trammell, whose company also has secured a deal with South Biscayne Church in North Port, also is looking at property in Texas, Georgia and Kentucky.

Omega has identified about 650 churches that meet the criteria for which Omega is looking, he said.

“Our goal is to do 50 of them in 10 years,” Trammell said. “We’d love to do 15 in Florida. In the market study we did, for every bed we build, there’s a need for six more.”

“It’s a win-win-win-win,” Trammell said.

“Church of Hope will have a ministry dedicated to the facility. They see it as a ministry.

We think that will increase the level of care and offset costs.”

The Fountains of Hope project will take about 13 months to build. Trammell said he expects the facility to be fully leased within the first 18 months.

Trammell and Young both see the 132bed facility at Church of Hope as the model moving forward.

Parade celebrates pink pride To celebrate the participants of the 2014 Dragon Boat Festival Oct. 25, Lakewood Ranch Main Street hosted a parade and a range of other outdoor activities at the Pink Paddlers Party.

Breast cancer survivors and their families cheered for the men and women in the parade, while waving flags from their teams’ homelands. The paddlers traveled from Australia, Canada and other foreign areas to participate in the festival and events involving the friendly on-the-water competition.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR + University signalization offers false hope

Dear Editor, I read the article regarding traffic flow problems on University Parkway and the latest proposed solution.

So this scheme claims to work in little cities like Topeka, Kan. and Upper Merion, Pa. I wonder what cities with real traffic problems like New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago use.

One sentence in the story was particularly worrisome: If traffic improvements are not seen along University Parkway, the equipment could be removed and installed somewhere else in the county, Sarasota County’s Jim Harriott said.

So the two counties spend about a million dollars between them, and if it doesn’t work on University Parkway, why would it work elsewhere in the county?

Traffic management engineers of Sarasota and Manatee counties have been promising a fix for at least four years — four years! Is this the best they can come up with?

Unexpected growth is not new to the district, but it was better managed in the past. Additional teachers were quickly hired while qualified applicants were still available.

Is it a result of mass employee exodus? The toxic climate in the district has caused many to take positions elsewhere or to retire early.

Is it because the human resources department is so severely understaffed that they cannot respond to the hiring needs of the schools in a timely manner? The drastic dismissal of knowledgeable HR personnel has resulted in a hiring slowdown.

District leadership likes to complain about the “good old boy” network of the past. Yet, they appear to hire friends from their former districts and states.

This seems to be occurring even when contracting for health care, administrator training and school security. Is this cronyism just another form of a “good old boy” network?

Julie Aranibar has been involved by volunteering and being a strong advocate for the Manatee County school system since 1999; plus, she has lived in Manatee County since 1998. It is pretty apparent that she is well respected since all the school unions have endorsed her candidacy.

Mary Cantrell, also a candidate, has never made an effort to assimilate into the community.

Homesteaded in St. Petersburg, she commuted each day to her previous job. She has worked for years in Manatee County and never made an effort to move here and be part of the community. Oh yes, she rented a room in a friend’s house to pretend that she lived here. Home sweet home.

+ Watercrest supports SMR development I want to address some of the remarks made by Rex Jensen in your Oct. 8, article regarding “SMR’s Response to Residents’ Concerns.”

First, Mr. Jensen indicated that Edgewater residents objected to the building of Watercrest. This is simply not true. What Edgewater objected to was the use of their roadways as construction thorblem will remain calm. At more than 7 feet tall, its long neck will limit its enthusiasm, at least physically.

“This is a laid-back mascot,” Saviano said. “With its long neck, it can’t be too animated.”

There is a contest to name the mascot and Saviano said he seeks volunteers for the mascot position.

Second, Mr. Jensen suggests that Watercrest residents feel building seven-story buildings directly across from them will adversely affect their views. Currently, Watercrest residents are looking at the back of the movie theater and adjacent parking lots.

Watercrest fully trusts that whatever is built on the site behind the theater will improve their views.

Third, Mr. Jensen indicates that the intent for the development along Lakewood Main Street has always been intended for an urban environment, which would presumably permit tall buildings.

Yet, to date, the Lakewood Main Street consists of low-rise buildings.

Finally, Mr. Jensen claims the projected additional 90 units proposed for the seven-story buildings, all of which will enter and exit via Lakewood Ranch Boulevard, will not significantly impact traffic on Lakewood Boulevard.

Yet, the new apartment complex on Lakewood Boulevard with 237 units, with probably at least that many cars, has just begun occupancy. Further, no one knows what will be the impact on traffic flow along Lakewood Ranch Boulevard and The Mall at University Town Center. Perhaps a more prudent course would be to wait and see what these changes bring and whether and to what extent Lakewood Ranch Boulevard may become an alternative route to I-75 north of University Parkway.

Law enforcement trains for furry companions

A new training location will show nearby students the four-legged side of law enforcement — K-9 deputies.

EAST COUNTY — What has four legs, loves hide-and-seek, is certified by the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office and will neighbor two East County schools?

Eight K-9 deputies and their handlers, who will soon become familiar faces to Braden River High and Manatee Technical Institute faculty members, students and their parents.

In about a month, the Sheriff’s Office will start utilizing land adjacent to the two schools for the training of K-9 deputies — German Shepherd and other dog breeds that accompany law enforcement on certain cases. On the two acres of land located at 6545 State Road 70 E., officers, or handlers, will conduct obedience training with the dogs — a vital component needed for the Sheriff’s Office to utilize the canines.

“Training between dog and handler is ongoing,” said Dave Bristow, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office. “This type of training is very important; it builds trust between dog and owner. The deputy has to teach the canine to be able to obey commands.”

The Manatee County School District approved the Sheriff’s Office use of the land for training in September. The Sheriff’s Office will lease the land for five years for a total cost of $10.

Training schedules have not yet been set because the Sheriff’s Office continues to prepare the lot for use.

Fencing will enclose a 210-by 210-foot space, in which certain training activities will be held.

The dogs will never be left unattended or overnight, Bristow said.

“The space will just be a training area, which is really what we need right now,” Bristow said. “The dogs live with their handlers, so it’s not like we need a kennel or anything along those lines.”

OCT. 20 DUST UP 6:32 p.m. — 2100 block of University Parkway. Suspicious Circumstance. The owner of a used-car lot thought the cars on her lot looked extremely dusty. Upon further inspection, she discovered someone had sprayed several of the vehicles on her lot with a fire extinguisher. A neighbor reported some kids were drinking near the site the night before.

OCT. 23 LOST CALL 3:30 p.m. — 6600 block of Greenbrook Boulevard. Lost Property. A boy told police he thought he left his cell phone on a bench in a school locker room. The boy and his father searched the locker room with no luck. Police couldn’t locate the phone using a finder app.

OCT. 25 FARE FIGHT 2:28 a.m. — 7700 block of Plantation Circle. Fraud. A cab driver told police he picked up a man in Sarasota and drove him to East County and waited in the cab while the occupant promised to come back with the fare. He came back, but only with $6 in cash for a $25 ride. The man refused to answer the door when police arrived, and the cab driver received a case number for his complaint.

CUT AND RUN 8:42 a.m. — 5600 block of Whitehead Street. Theft. Someone used a pair of cable cutters to cut the cable and lock off a woman’s kayaks that were secured to a kayak lodge near her house. The kayaks were stolen, and police are searching the cable cutters left behind for prints.

3:16 a.m. — Intersection of U.S. 301 and University Parkway. Suspicious Circumstance. Police observed a bicycle leaning against a shopping cart at the southeast corner of the intersection. The bike had a bike lock connecting it to the shopping cart.

Police believe a homeless man is using the shopping cart to make sure no one steals his bike and made plans to investigate the matter further.

After almost a year and a half of training, the newest FSU/Asolo Conservatory company is ready to take the stage.

J

ust on the outskirts of downtown Sarasota, there exists a dense jungle. However, this rainforest is rich with creativity and humanity instead of exotic wildlife and giant plants (though it does have its fair share of foreign Banyan trees). The Ringling Complex, the combined canopy of The Ringling, FSU Performing Arts Center and the New College of Florida, houses and produces

an abundance of classic art, circus artifacts, new works of theater and ballet, foreign architecture and gardens galore.

But living within this wilderness lives a strong collective that feeds off this ecosystem of creative raw materials: the FSU/ Asolo Conservatory.

Formally titled the Florida State University/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training, the conservatory is a competi-

tive, three-year, master’s of fine arts acting program that ranks among the top 10 programs in the country and in the top 25 in the English-speaking world.

Each incoming class consists of 12 students — just small enough for the faculty and staff to mold and elevate each individual performer, but also just large enough to create a sense of camaraderie and collaboration. After a three-year gauntlet

of learning and performing, the students earn a degree and their Actors’ Equity Association card.

“The conservatory combines academia and graduate-level training that is professionally based,” says Greg Leaming, director of the conservatory and associate artistic director of Asolo Repertory Theatre. “This is not an academic institution per se. We’re not training teachers; we’re training artists.”

The tribe of thespians is as eclectic in taste, temperament and creative energy as the conservatory’s upcoming season. The conservatory’s season opens with David Mamet’s rarely produced play, “The Water Engine,” running from Nov. 4 through Nov. 23. The remainder of this year’s productions are William Shakespeare’s cross-dressing comedy “As You Like It;” the fairly new musical

The Lakewood Ranch High boys and girls crosscountry teams both scored 43 points to finish second overall in the 13-team TriCounty Cross Country Championships Oct. 23.

Braden River’s Luke Morris finished second in the 100-year backstroke and the 200 individual medley at the Class 3A-District 8 meet Oct. 23.

Natalie Buffett finished with 16 kills to lead the ODA volleyball team to a 3-0 victory against Bradenton Christian in the Class 3A-District 10 semifinals Oct. 21.

MUSTANG Four-Peat to a 25-10, 25-14, 25-10 victory against North Port in the district semifinals Oct. 21.

With the win, Lakewood posted another 20-win season, earned a berth in the regional tournament and advanced to the district championship for the fourth-consecutive season.

In doing so, the Lady Mustangs set up a district championship rematch with Sarasota, a 3-0 winner this year against Braden River.

But unlike last season’s title game, which went five sets, Lakewood cruised to an easy three-set victory, defeating Sarasota 25-17, 25-16, 25-13 to win its fourth straight district crown Oct. 23.

“Every title that I have won is really special to me, but this title is especially important because it was my senior year, and it’s the last district title I will be able to be a part of at Lakewood Ranch, which is very bittersweet,” Grant says. “It shows how much

this program has improved and how much hard work we put in as a team every year.”

Grant powered Lakewood with 12 kills, two blocks and eight digs.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — It’s been recognized as the Grand Slam of college tennis.

Both national championship contenders and coaches alike look forward to the recognition, camaraderie, support and prestige that comes from competing in one of the top NCAA Intercollegiate Tennis Association fall tournaments in the country.

And this year proves no different.

Twenty men’s and women’s tennis teams from across the country will hit the court Nov. 7 through Nov. 9 for the Lakewood Ranch Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic presented by First Watch Café.

The annual tournament, which features teams from the nation’s best conferences, is free and open to the public. However, donations will be accepted with proceeds benefiting The V Foundation for Cancer Research. “(Lakewood Ranch resident) Larry Wade and Dick Vitale have worked tirelessly and are always extremely passionate in raising sponsorship money for The V Foundation,” head tennis professional Chris Marquez says. “Their efforts and passion definitely need to be recognized and applauded. Many lives and families will benefit from the level of commitment they have in fighting cancer.”

The opening rounds of the men’s and women’s singles tournaments and the doubles tournament will begin at 9 a.m.

Nov. 7; matches run through the weekend.

The women’s singles final is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Nov. 9, followed by the men’s singles final at noon. Men’s and women’s doubles finals also will be held that day.

The Lakewood Ranch High volleyball team defeated Sarasota 3-0 in the Class 7A-District 10 championship Oct. 23 and captured its fourth straight district title.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Throughout Nicole Grant’s freshman season, she couldn’t help but look at the green volleyball banner hanging from the rafters of the gym at Lakewood Ranch High School.

The banner, void of any district championship accolades, served as a silent reminder of the work ahead for the Lady Mustangs.

That same year Lakewood climbed to district prominence, capturing its first district crown and advancing to the regional finals.

Since then, Grant, now a senior outside hitter, and her teammates have been a fixture atop the district standings, having won district titles every year since.

This year proved no different.

The Pirates earned a berth in the Class 7A playoffs with a 42-14 victory against North Port in Class 7A-District 10 action Oct. 24.

Braden River scored five touchdowns in the first half to take a 35-7 lead at halftime.

The Pirates scored their final touchdown on the opening kickoff of the second half on defensive back Davion Banks’ 88-yard kickoff return.

With the win, Braden River improved to 7-0 (3-0 7A-10) for the first time in school history.

“It’s a tremendous testament to the hard work that our players and coaches have put in over the last three years,” coach Curt Bradley says. “This is a huge step in the right direction for our program.”

The Pirates will host Palmetto for the 7A-10 title Oct. 31.

Proceeds from the event benefit Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy.

The school hosted a Trunk or Treat event, during which parents sat in lawn chairs near the trunks of their cars and distributed candy to children.

The school offers the annual event so children can receive candy in a safe environment before Halloween.
