here are numerous words synonymous with ballet: elegant, sophisticated, classical, highbrow, “The Nutcracker” and “Swan Lake.” However, there is quite a different word associated with ballet dancers that most people don’t think of: grit.

“Ballet is a physical extreme no other art form has,” says Danielle Brown, principal dancer for the Sarasota Ballet. “I do think dancers are some of the strongest human beings.”

The Sarasota Ballet’s physical elasticity, tenacity and strength have been on display since its founding in 1990. With the addition of Iain Webb in 2007 at the helm as artistic director, the Ballet’s determination, imagination and fighting spirit have rapidly rocketed the company into national and international prominence with creative and spirited interpretations of classic productions and staging of world premieres.

“It’s been a lot of hard work over the past seven years,” Webb says. “There’s a lot more hard work still to come, and I think it’s great for our Sarasota community and hopefully shines a light on all the arts in Sarasota and how great it is.”

All of that hard work has garnered a lot of attention from the national dance community, with the Sarasota Ballet receiving invitations to perform at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, participating in the annual “Ballet Across America” series, receiving a listing in Pointe Magazine as one of the top 10 performances of 2013 and host-

This past weekend the determination and dedication of Webb, his staff and the more than 50 dancers who call Sarasota Ballet home culminated in a high honor and a first in the 24-year history of the organization: performing in New York City.

Sareen Tchekmedyian Ballet closed the 11th annual Fall for Dance Festival at the New York City Center with two separate performances Saturday and Sunday. Not only did the company close the festival, which featured 20 acclaimed international dance companies and artists, but it also sold out its two performances. The Ballet performed the only non-modern/contemporary piece in the entire festival.

Exposure to the New York City dance community will likely accelerate the already rapid ascension of the Sarasota Ballet, but the light and entertaining

“Les Patineurs” (which recreates the fanciful movements of ice skating through ballet) will have reached even the most casual of dance enthusiasts.

“What I think is exciting about the Fall for Dance Festival is that it’s just for regular people who enjoy seeing dance,” says Jamie Carter, soloist dancer for Sarasota Ballet. “It’s not an elitist event with just dance world insiders.”

And with the Ballet’s sevenprogram season coming up, including two world premieres, the performances at the New York City Center serve as an

adrenaline shot for the work and excitement that lies ahead.

“I think it’ll be a great way to start the season,” says Amy Wood, soloist for Sarasota Ballet. “We have got the best job to get to dance around and do what we love for a living.”

Asked what’s next for the company after such a seminal achievement, Webb responds quickly.

“I can’t tell you that, but lots of exciting things,” says Webb.

“Let’s just say I’ve got a whole bucket list that I’d love to see the company do.”

April: The New York City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival invites The Sarasota Ballet to perform.

August: The company organizes trip, flight, lodging and travel information.

Tuesday, Oct. 14: Costumes and set pieces are packed, crated and driven from Sarasota to New York City Center.

Thursday, Oct. 16: Costumes and set pieces arrive at New York City Center and are unpacked; sets are constructed, and light design is established.

Oct. 16: The Sarasota Ballet company flies from Sarasota to New York City. Rehearsal is conducted that afternoon.

Friday, Oct. 17: The Sarasota Ballet attends rehearsals and dance classes conducted by Artistic Director Iain Webb and Assistant Director Margaret Barbieri.

Saturday, Oct. 18: The company attends full dress rehearsal runthroughs of Sir Frederick Ashton’s “Les Patineurs” with a performance at 8 p.m.

Sunday, Oct. 19: The final matinee performance takes place at 2 p.m. Dancers have the afternoon and night to explore New York City.

Monday, Oct. 20: The company flies back to Sarasota. Costumes and set pieces are packed and crated again and put on a truck heading back to Florida.

Put “Buck Rogers,” “Flash Gordon” and “Superman” and all the other classic science fiction movie serials and radio shows in a blender and hit frappé. The result would resemble “Intergalactic Nemesis: Book One: Target Earth,” which touched down at this year’s RIAF. The plot? Aliens attack. A plucky band of humans fights back, with the aid of a few plucky robots from space. (For more details, visit theintergalacticnemesis.com.)

Plot’s really not the point. The source material is the pre-“Star Trek,” pre-“Star Wars” space operas and serials. Gene Roddenberry built his Federation as a deliberate snub to their childish conventions; George Lucas made a galactic emperor’s ransom honoring the childish conventions with state-of-the-art special effects. Here, the creative team winks at the silly source material, but only occasionally. “Nemesis” is more pastiche than parody: a deliberate, loving imitation of an artistic form. And that’s where it gets interesting.

More than plot, the medium is really the message. TV killed radio, and the radio drama form along with it — a fascinating form, cut short in its prime. This production brings it back, not as a dead genre, but a living art form.

What you get is a radio drama, live on stage. That sounds talky, but it’s more like a rollercoaster ride. Strap in, and it’s one twist, turn and screaming plunge after another.

Jeffrey Mills plays Ben Wilcott, the alien-fighting librarian; Rachel Landon is Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Molly Sloan (a sister to Lois Lane and Katharine Hepburn’s character in “Woman of the Year”); Brock England plays Timmy Mendez (Jimmy Olsen’s long-lost twin).

The trio also plays a host of supporting characters, human, alien or otherwise — a versatile bunch.

“Intergalactic Nemesis” artist Cami Alys, who imitates thunder with a sheet of plastic and the sound of a locomotive with a box of macaroni and a whistle. Longhair pianist Harlan Hodges improvises the score like an old-time silent movie pianist. Behind it at all, the killer art of Tim Doyle’s graphic novel flashes overhead on a big screen. (The word balloons removed, of course.)

Jason Neulander directs, and he also wrote the script with Chad Nichols. (It’s more complicated than that. This beast began life as Ray Colgan’s radio drama and won the “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” award for multiple adaptations and spinoffs.) Paternity aside, Neulander’s production focuses on the now — and draws the audience in to cheer heroes and hiss villains. No passive spectators in this audience.

And that’s the brilliance of it.

“Intergalactic Nemesis” is an interactive movie of the mind. Unlike the movies in the multiplex, nothing’s canned. You’re watching it come together — in a live performance, right before your eyes. That’s half the fun.

Despite rumors of its death, the radio play is alive and well. It even works without the radio, in this weird, inventive, hybrid, multimedia production. The story may be pure nostalgia. But it’s a cool new medium.

impressive music making to Israeli composer Avner Dorman’s “Karsilama,” a folksy, syncopated, fun piece for two pianos that sounded like updated Bartok in the woods.

The Concertino for Two Pianos by Shostakovich was, like the Schubert, in multiple movements but played through and showed the duo’s ample technical prowess without ever letting down on their individual musicality.

Rachmininov’s Suite No. 1, a “FantaisieTableaux” for two pianos, ended the program. This gorgeously romantic piece is Rachmaninov’s early Russian side, sounding much like Mussorgsky’s “Boris Godunov” and “Pictures at an Exhibition.”

It’s a wonderful work and deserves to be heard more often, especially in the powerful and perceptive hands of this duo.

Their encore was the finale of the Prokofiev “Classical” Symphony in a dazzling arrangement for two pianos by the Japanese composer Rikuya Terashima.

Two things to note: Haroni and Kohlberg used electronic tablets rather than traditional sheet music, turning pages with an unobtrusive foot pedal and making this, in Kohlberg’s words, “a 21st century” musician’s concert. That’s certainly the wave of the future, cutting down on the need for page-turners and lugging numerous heavy scores on trans-Atlantic flights.

What we hope is not the wave of the future is the totally unnecessary amplification of two grand pianos in a small space.

Why? The pianists are powerful and the microphones pointing into the strings, no matter how deftly placed by the sound engineers, only serve to distort the real sound of the instruments. Perhaps ears have grown accustomed to the bombastic sounds of rock music but Schubert and Shostakovich don’t need futuristic (and deafening) assistance.

Dorothy Fields and Cy Coleman got it right: It’s not where you start, it’s where you finish.

We took in two of the Ringling International Art Festival’s performances last week, starting with The Pedrito Martinez Group in the Cook Theater, and ending with the Duo Amal in the Mildred Sainer Pavilion.

The first was called, by the New York Times, “… complex, blenderized Africa-to-the-New-World Pedrito funk.” I’d simply call it Martinez loud. The group — consisting of singer-drummer Martinez, bassist Alvaro Benavides, singer-keyboardist Aricacne Trujillo and drummer-cowbell player Jhair Sala — was so over-amplified, some of the wiser audience members were seen stuffing tissues in their ears.

Their music is not my cup of tea, which doesn’t make it or them bad. They’ve certainly made a name for themselves at major festivals from Newport to New Orleans. Maybe I’d have enjoyed it if I’d been lolling under a palm tree in Punta Cana with a tall rum drink or two or three.

But in the small confines of the Cook Theatre, I felt as if I’d descended into a tonally cacophonous hell.

Individually, they’re interesting performers, some with more music to offer than others. But the over-amplification in the tiny Cook Theater drummed out any sense or sensibility they may have had under other circumstances. My ears ached for hours.

Duo Amal was the antidote.

Pianists Bishara Haroni, from Palestine, and Yaron Kohlberg, from Israel, named their piano team “Amal,” which means “hope” in Arabic. Proteges of Zubin Mehta, the pair first played together at a peace concert in Oslo about three years ago, proving that with music, all things are possible, and when you have the kind of prodigious talent these 31-year-olds have, there’s hope for the world.

Opening with Schubert’s piano fourhand, “Fantasia in F Minor,” the two shared the Yamaha grand bringing out the individual voices of this well-known work with a clarity and mature understanding rarely heard. Their sensitivity to voicing and bridging tonal transitions was impeccable, and they brought a rare transparency to this beautifully crafted piece.

an Miguel de Allende is generally considered the prettiest town in Mexico. Set in the central highlands, it has charmed visitors for centuries with its colonial architecture, cascading bougainvillea and spring-like climate. It is also one of the artistic centers of the country, where generations of

craftsmen have created the artisanal look that defines Mexican design. Things are made by hand in San Miguel, each a little different from the other, with motifs that go back in history to the Spanish Renaissance and the Indian culture that flourished there for thousands of years.

Colonial Mexican art is not known for its restraint. Less is not more; exuberance and ornamentation are glorified and celebrated. Consequently, La Gran Dama has a strong personality. Colors are rich, spaces are grandly scaled, and details are lavish. Each room, it seems, has features specially designed for it: Floors are inlaid with wood, granite and marble, and the moldings that complement the ceilings are each a little different, each a statement of the home’s unique point of view. *** Planning and construction for La Gran Dama took three-and-ahalf years, with the architectural firm of Bloodgood Sharp Buster designing the plans and Anchor Builders in charge of the building phase. The owners, a couple prominent in local business and philanthropy, carefully oversaw all of this.

“We wanted to do something unique,” the husband said. They have a teenage son and a very lucky rescue dog named Tiger who guards the property, at least when he’s not napping on one of the custom-made sofas.

But it was Sarasota decorator Kurt Lucas who came up with the San Miguel connection. Early in the design process, Lucas and the owner went to Mexico to meet with the craftsmen who were creating the decorative flourishes that give the home its special character.

“It was a 12-hour ride from the border, through the roughest mountains roads I’ve ever seen,” the owner recalls.

But the effort paid off. The craftsmen’s contributions include the massive, hand-carved stone fireplace in the living room and the one-of-a-kind lighting fixtures and chandeliers that fill the home.

Even the pillars of volcanic stone that face the pool area are their handiwork, with a series of Mexican Gothic arches above — another signature of the San Miguel style.

And then there’s the plate. While exploring one of the town’s famous specialty shops, the owner came across some plates.

“As soon as I saw them I knew they were the right choice for the home,” he says. But as he studied them more, he began to see the inspiration for the home’s color palette, and today the home glows with the rich yellows, reds and blues of the serendipitously important piece of pottery. *** La Gran Dama is a large home.

In its eighth year of partnership with Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation, Saks Fifth Avenue Sarasota hosted its 9th annual Key to the Cure Tuesday, Oct. 14, at its new location at The Mall at University Town Center. The 80,000-squarefoot, multilevel space accommodated 1,600 guests for the kickoff event of the Sarasota social season. The event raised more than $160,000, which put it over its goal of raising $1 million for the foundation since it began.
