E C I O H C 1. “Intergalactic Nemesis” (Oct. 16 through Oct. 18, at the Ringling International Arts Festival) “I’m a cartoonist and a big fan of old-time radio, so this seems like a nice mash-up of both traditions. There will be a projection of comic book panels behind three actors who are essentially doing a radio play. It’s rooted in something that’s near and dear to the hearts of science fiction and comic book fans everywhere.”

2. “The Addams Family” (Oct. 29 through Nov. 16, at The Players Theatre) “The Addams family is one of my all-time favorite families, probably because they remind me of my own family. The plot is very similar to ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.’ The premise is that Wednesday Addams has fallen in love with a man and her family is shocked to discover that he’s normal. He’s not dressed in black. He’s not macabre.

He doesn’t have supernatural powers. It should be a hoot.”

3. “The Water Engine” (Nov. 4 through Nov. 23, at the FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training) “It’s old-time classic conspiracy theater.

It’s the story the crazy guy on the bus shares with you as he puts on his tin foil hat. The general premise is that someone invented an engine that runs on water, and the oil company suppressed it. It’s got a Frank Capra-kind-of-clunkyunderdog in it who beats the system. Plus it’s set during the 1939 World’s Fair, which is very appealing to me.”

4. Hairspray (Nov. 12 through Jan. 4, at Florida Studio Theatre) “Under all the jokes and machinery, there’s a real humanity to it. It’s rooted

in the reality of 1962 Baltimore, which is where (‘Hairspray’ filmmaker) John Waters grew up. It’s a look at cliques and what it takes to break down the barriers of acceptance. I think FST is going to have a lot of fun with it.”

5. “Spunk” (April 15 through May 17, at the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe) “It’s three tales by Zora Neale Hurston.

What I like about Hurston’s writing is that it gets into the language of the times and subculture. One of the stories is told entirely in zoot suit slang. It’s going to be great.”

6. “Woody Sez: the Life and Music of Woody Guthrie” (May 30 through June 21, at the Asolo Repertory Theatre) “Woody Guthrie is really responsible for the American singer/songwriter tradition.

This is a very authentic play that gets into his life, his music and philosophy. (Guthrie) was the kind of guy who would say things like, ‘Life is pretty tough. You’re lucky to live through it.’ He was very incisive and humane. I know the Asolo Rep can do it right.”

hanks to the Ringling International Arts Festival, the Sarasota season now starts with a bang –– literally.

When fireworks explode Oct. 15 signaling the start of the Ringling Museum’s four-day arts festival, the rest of the city’s arts and cultural venues spring to life.

It’s a frenzied time of year. The weather cools down. The traffic picks up, and the curtains go up in every theater in town.

Starting in November, you could realistically attend a different performance every weekend through May. This season’s lineup is the kind of artistic grab bag about which theatergoers dream. From George Balanchine to Woody Guthrie, obscure Russian operas to beloved blockbuster musicals, this season’s programming has something for everyone. To see which shows are already garnering critical acclaim, we asked Sarasota critics Marty Fugate, June LeBell and Anna Dearing to give us their top picks for the 2014/2015 season.

4. Masterworks at the Sarasota Orchestra “Although this is Anu Tali’s second season, it’s the first one where she is conducting five of the season’s Masterworks. She’s bringing internationally renowned soloists whom Sarasota has never seen before. I’m especially excited about pianist Alexander Toradze, flugelhorn player Sergei Nakariakov, Stephen Hough ­— one of the world’s greatest pianists — and Benjamin Schmid on Korngold’s Violin Concerto, which sounds like this gorgeous combination of John Williams and Rachmaninoff.”

2. “South Pacific” (Nov. 11 through Dec. 28, at the Asolo Repertory Theatre) “The Asolo does wonderful work with musicals. They always have an interesting take, both musically and dramatically. I saw ‘South Pacific’ with the original cast on Broadway, and I bet anything that this incarnation of the show will be different and interesting.”

5. Charlie Albright (The Sarasota Institute of Lifetime Learning’s Music Mondays, March 2, at Sarasota Orchestra’s Holley Hall) “Charlie is a classical pianist who grew up loving rock ’n’ roll. He was here a couple years ago — he played ‘Great Balls of Fire’ for the audience and the roof almost went off. He’s really incredible, fun, funny and entertaining.”

3. “The Golden Cockerel” (Feb. 21 through March 19, at Sarasota Opera) “It’s a wonderful opera, and it’s rarely done. I not only grew up with these arias, but I grew up singing them. I saw it only once at New York City Opera with Beverly

storyline. I’m intrigued to see if they do the classic water bucket scene on stage. Plus, who wouldn’t want to see a good ’80s movie turned into a musical?”

Sarasota Ballet’s “Balanchine, Tuckett & Bruce” (Nov. 21 and Nov. 22, at the Sarasota Opera House) “Balanchine’s ‘Rubies’ is just one section of a three-part ballet called ‘Jewels,’ which I love. Balanchine makes the dancers so elegant, beautiful and sparkly. ‘Jewels’ is one of his classic pieces. It’s always a treat to watch.”

2. Sarasota Ballet’s “La Fille mal Gardée” (Dec. 19 and Dec. 20, at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall) “It’s a charming, humorous ballet but also incredibly challenging and technical.”

4. Sarasota Ballet’s “The Ballets Russes” (May 1 and May 2, at the Sarasota Opera House) “Nijinsky’s ‘Afternoon of a Faun’ and (Fokine’s) ‘Petrushka’ were these historical ballets you had to watch as a young dancer at ballet camp.

They’re very historic. I’ve never seen them performed live before, so I’m really excited to see Sarasota Ballet bring them to life.”

5. Sarasota Challenge Ballroom Competition (March 23 and March 24, at the Hyatt Regency Sarasota) and the Florida State DanceSport Championships (July 28 through Aug. 2, at the Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota) “Local dancer Sid Pocius puts on a great competition. During the day you can watch the pro-am competition, then at night you’ve got the gala performances. (Pocius) brings in top professionals from the industry. Larry and Dianne Dean do the same thing in the summer with their Triple Crown (the Florida State DanceSport Championships). Both events are so much fun. Everybody gets dressed up. There are false eyelashes and Swarovski crystals everywhere.”

Steve Patmagrian: Making the Scenes Talk about the guy behind the scenes — Steve Patmagrian creates the scenes. His skill set recalls the riff in Johnny Cash’s “I’ve Been Everywhere.” In Patmagrian’s case, he’s been a set designer, stage manager, sound and lighting technician, event planner, videographer, technical director and combat instructor. New Atmosphere Productions, Patmagrian’s studio and special events production company, had a 25-year run staging imaginative happenings for Sarasota Film Festival, Mote Marine, Historic Spanish Point, Sarasota Memorial Hospital and other area nonprofits, while simultaneously creating custom props and sets for local theater companies at a moment’s notice. As a freelance creative consultant, Patmagrian is still making scenes. Most recently, he was part of the creative team that reimagined the Broadway Bar as The Starlite Room. Here’s what he’s imagining now.

New Atmosphere Productions had a warehouse resembling Citizen Kane’s (or the Addams family’s) basement. You could find every set or prop imaginable inside. How did it feel when you finally sold everything?

Ah, to dismantle the creations of 25 years was bittersweet. Every drape, oversized fish and gigantic head had its own story to tell.

What was the most challenging prop or set piece for you?

That’d have to be a 16-foot diameter giant octopus that hung over the dance floor at Mote Marine’s “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” fundraiser.

I did the sets, handled the lighting and the sound and helped refine the whole conceptual frame of the show — pretty much everything except the words. Larry listened and treated me as a creative

collaborator, not just the nuts-and-bolts guy. The whole process was an all-time career high.

What does a technical director do?

What’ve you got? I’m a Jack of all trades and a master of none. As a technical director that’s a plus. In an ideal world with an ideal budget, you work with experts, each with his own highly specialized knowledge. But the theatrical world is often less

What are your thoughts about local live theater?

We’re so lucky in Sarasota. There’s such a wide variety of live theater, not just one production of “The King and I” and “Brigadoon” after another. We’ve got the black box productions at Venice Little Theatre and the Players; Manatee Players has its amazing new facility at the Manatee Performing Arts Center; Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, Florida Studio Theatre, the Asolo and the Asolo Conservatory continue to take risks; we’ve got a great improv scene — I could go on, but there’s just too much to get into it. People should really discover it for themselves. I hope everybody gets a chance to go to the theater in Sarasota. It’s not an elitist thing.

It feels great. I don’t have a burning desire to be on stage. I’m content to set the stage.

How did you get started on your artistic path?

I think it was my destiny, although I rebelled against it. My father was a musician and a conductor. My mother was a true Renaissance woman who taught art at the Ringling College of Art and Design for more than 20 years and also created her own art. So, I grew up in an artistic household with a home art studio. Like most kids, I resisted going into the arts, but for some reason I volunteered to do set work for the Players in my first year of high school. I stuck with it on every show straight through graduation, after which they appointed me designer and technical director. I wound up going to art school and majored in interior design and space planning. I couldn’t escape my destiny.

Coined ‘Villa Selva,’ Spanish for ‘jungle house,’ Don Connelly and Rebecca Saggau’s Siesta Key home radiates the ambience of a rainforest resort.

I

n 2008, Don Connelly and Rebecca Saggau were living in Gator Creek and seeking to buy a place on the water. They were looking for something that wasn’t just a plot of land, something wooded and spacious. And they found that perfect blend when they stumbled upon the property at 4401 Midnight Pass Road.

“We were sold on the house before we even looked at it,” says Saggau. “I saw all of these wonderful decks and the views of the north bridge and downtown Sarasota from the back deck. It was such a good piece of land, and I knew it was the house for us.”

The main thing that attracted the couple to the home was the fact that the outside blended with the inside. With the floor-to-ceiling windows and the open, spread out floor plan, every room in the house has a view — be it of the water or the yard, the landscaping acts as art.

The home was built to flow with the nature of the property, resulting in a mean-

dering floor plan that conforms to the landscaping surrounding the house. Although not your typical square layout, the interior was designed to feature open living space, with plenty of natural light coming in through the picture frame windows.

The design of the interior makes it so that when the weather is just right and the owners open the sliding glass pocket doors, the entire back of the home opens up to the deck, seamlessly blending the indoors with the outdoors.

“It’s such a magical place to be, especially at night,” Saggau says.

“The landscaping lights up; you can just sit back and enjoy the ambience, the stars and the views.

Everything just comes alive.”

Though Connelly and Saggau have lived in the home for the past eight years, it was Dan and Sherry Watts whose vision started the whole thing. Ian McEwan’s newest novel, “The Children Act,” examines Judge Fiona Maye as she presides over the High Court’s family division, navigates her own crumbling marriage and considers the case of Adam Henry, a Jehovah’s Witness and a minor, who has refused lifesaving treatment for leukemia. “The Children Act” is thoroughly researched, thoughtprovoking and subtly suspenseful.

In the novel’s opening pages, Fiona attempts to review a judgment she has drafted in one of her cases, but she is unable to focus. Instead, her mind replays the fight she has just had with her husband. Jack Maye, Fiona’s husband of 35 years, has announced his intention to have an affair with a 28-year-old statistician. He maintains that he loves Fiona, but he sees this liaison as his “last shot,” and he wants Fiona’s blessing … or at least her acquiescence. Fiona demurs.

The following day, as Fiona endeavors to compartmentalize her own marital discord, she hears argument in a case that precipitates much of the action in the novel. Adam Henry, a Jehovah’s Witness who is less than three months shy of his 18th birthday, has leukemia. On religious grounds, however, Adam and his parents have refused medical treatment, without which he will almost certainly die.

After hearing arguments by all parties, Fiona makes the unorthodox decision to adjourn and visit Adam in the hospital, ostensibly to gauge his comprehension of the ordeal he faces should treatment be withheld. She finds Adam a plainly ill but beautiful boy, an aspiring poet and violinist and a youth of keen intellect and insight.

Immediately following the visit, Fiona pronounces her decision in open court.

In “The Children Act,” McEwan deftly mingles Fiona’s personal struggles and her professional endeavors. He sympathetically portrays Fiona’s struggle to keep the loss, regret and betrayal she feels about her marriage buttoned-up, while subtly revealing how Fiona’s emotional turmoil impacts her thinking and affects her decisions. The effect is intriguing and not a little unsettling.

Season has begun, and we are kicking off the return of the Black Tie cover with St. Martha Catholic School’s 4th annual Interactive Dinner, “Escape to the Caribbean.” With vibrant blues, pinks and greens, elegant tropical flowers, bamboo décor and music of the islands, this Caribbean-themed dinner transformed the ballroom at Michael’s On East into a tropical paradise.

From the bishops and priests to the SMCS staff and parents, everyone had a blast preparing their own dishes and, most importantly, more than $90,000 was raised for the students.
