or more than a year, the floor-toceiling glass windows of Unit 4A in the Rosemary District Lofts have displayed nothing but a for-lease sign. Now, impeccably dressed mannequins line the window displays, but they only provide a small preview of what is going on inside.

Like a scene out of a Vogue behind-thescenes documentary, inside is emerging local designer Alexandra Lin’s design studio. It features minimalist furniture and dress forms in the foyer, followed by rows of industrial sewing machines, racks of concepts, design boards and cutting tables and some of Lin’s personal decorations sprinkled in between.

It’s a beautiful sight. But the question remains: What is going on? Leasing agent Steve Bradley of New Orchard Group and Lin, spunky sports-mom-turned-fashiondesigner, are eager to share her story. Although you can’t walk inside to purchase Lin’s designs yet, the studio is home to a budding designer whose collection will soon be available online. “Every one of these is somehow a person before they are even a fabric or design,” says Alexandra Lin. “A person, a place, a picture — it’s the personality.

When that happens, I’ll see a fabric that matches this category, this personality in my head — not necessarily a name, just the emotion that goes with it.”

A KNACK FOR STYLING

Lin’s natural instinct for styling first emerged as a child, when she spent the cold Vermont winters dressing up her Barbies. Her love of sewing, however, was borne out of necessity: Her shorter height led to a frequent need of tailoring, which familiarized her with the idea that just as specific pieces aren’t confined to a size or fit, fashion can be created and altered as one pleases.

Lin always wanted to learn to sew, specifically on an industrial sewing machine, but she didn’t excel at it until her training in fashion design.

“My first sewing experience was a nightmare with the Girl Scouts,” says Lin. “It wasn’t the Girl Scouts, it was me. It wasn’t a pretty thing.”

Despite her failed attempt at sewing with the Brownies, Lin’s interest in fashion didn’t change but, rather, shifted gears to styling.

THE DIGITAL DEBUTANTE

Describing her collection as “the idea of a new woman, her debut,” Lin has coined her launch campaign “The Digital Debutante.”

“It’s not the concept so much of a debutante coming out into society but more that the digital age gives you the ability to have your debut,” says Lin. “The feeling inside that you’re being who you are; it’s about when that happens.”

Lin bases her designs off of a classic silhouette: She wants to create a fit that never goes out of style, that can be worn in many ways and exudes personality.

“Maybe every piece isn’t for them, but there is something that can be part of everyone’s personal style,” says Lin. “The woman wearing it can create it to be her own.”

From fashion school, to showing pieces during Tampa Bay Fashion Week, to an internship with Escada in New York City followed by the design and creation of a line to be officially debuted at Toshi’s Penthouse during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week as “the new face of the South,” Lin is well on her way of continuing to live out her dream of designing fashion.

“Oprah once said that everyone should have the experience when they turn around and look at themselves in the mirror: ‘Wow. I feel good,’ at least once in their lifetime,’” says Lin. “With everything that I design, I hope that somebody feels that.”

LIVELY MOMENT

It was a freezing day in New York City, and Alexandra Lin had lost a glove. In need of another pair, she walked into American Apparel near her apartment. There was nobody in the store, so she decided to look around, and that’s when she saw a leather circle skirt, much like one she had designed herself. She decided to try it on to compare the fit.

There happened to be one other woman in the dressing room. When she stepped out, she saw Lin and asked her opinion on the same leather circle skirt Lin had just tried on.

“It was right around fashion week, and I could tell the sales associates were acting a certain way, so I figured she was a model — I knew I had seen the face before, she was so beautiful,” says Lin. The “model” continued talking to Lin and asked her opinion on things she was trying on.

“About fabrics, pants, flannel pajama pants for her husband — I’m giving her my opinion and everyone knew who she was but not me,” says Lin. “We were in line to check out, just chatting, and then when I got to the register the girl said: ‘Do you know who that was?’”

And that’s how Lin helped Blake Lively pick out pajama pants for Ryan Reynolds.

Here’s how Larry Keigwin pictures the Oct. 15 opening night of the Ringling International Arts Festival: The courtyard at The Ringling is packed with guests. Hundreds of sharply dressed men and women are sipping wine and commenting on how beautiful the night is. There’s palpable buzz in the air as the first few measures of Maurice Ravel’s “Bolero” begins.

A hush falls over the crowd as Ravel’s iconic score builds slowly and tantalizingly and the courtyard floods with 75 local dancers, the majority who had no formal dance training prior to volunteering for Keigwin’s sweeping RIAF performance.

These “pedestrians,” as Keigwin likes to call them, steal the 15-minute show. As they illustrate through choreographed movement everyday life in Sarasota, a series of theatrical vignettes unfold with the repetitive orchestral melody.

Anchored by six professional dancers from Keigwin’s New York City-based Keigwin + Company, the large-scale dance event will focus on highlighting the host city’s two most defining characteristics: activity and aging.

To make sure he hit the mark on these two themes, Keigwin, artistic director and co-founder of Keigwin + Company, recently sent two of his assistants to Sarasota to meet with local leaders and feel out the city and its inhabitants. To get a better feel for Keigwin, The Observer asked him to explain the inspiration behind his “Bolero” concept and why this performance Erin Baiano

Why set the work to Ravel’s “Bolero?”

I’ve always loved that piece of music. I’ve always found it to be epic and grand. I think it builds really beautifully. I always wondered, “How can I conquer that music on stage?” Then I started thinking about recruiting real-life people, amateur dancers and non-dancers to perform this community dance.

What is the ideal cast?

The ideal mix of ages is 1 to 100 … and one animal if possible. I love a huge wide demographic of people that resembles the population.

How big is a typical cast?

Anywhere between 40 and 80. My company is relatively small.

There are only six of them, and they tend to anchor the work.

So what you’re saying is even an average Joe with two left feet can perform?

I tend to think I’m good at excavating personalities. I’m looking for personalities, not necessarily the most talented person in the room. I want the person who wants to be on stage.

Anyone can audition. We call it an audition, but in all honesty we take everyone who shows up … and then we ask them to invite two more people to join the show. We really lean on the community.

This is your 11th “Bolero.” How different in scale and difficulty is this RIAF production?

This one is big. It’s a big venue and a large cast. It will definitely be challenging. What’s unique about Sarasota is that it’ll be outdoors. We’ve only done one other (“Bolero”) outside before (in Richmond, Va). This particular space should be inspiring. The architecture gives you so much to work with.

Is this anything like a flash mob?

There are definite similarities. It’s a mob certainly, but it’s not a flash. Everyone knows it’s going to happen. It’s more of a theatrical event. To me, what’s so cool about it is that it’s a work about a community, built by a community that, during the creative process, becomes another community.

Sarasota’s “Bolero” will be characterized by aging and activity. What characteristics have inspired some of your “Boleros” in other cities?

I like to touch down in a community and really work off of instinct and intuition. I usually feature two prominent elements of a community. In “Bolero Suburbia,” (in White Plains, N.Y.) the theme was community and nuclear family. In “Bolero New York” it was density and diversity.

that, of course. The town is more glamorous these days. The houses are bigger, and the summers seem as busy as the winters. But if you look carefully, you can still find traces of times gone by, when Sarasota was small, remote and special. Starting as a jewelry trend for only the brave, the ear cuff trend has been picked up by the talented designers of the couture jewelry world. They’ve turned it into a look that can be worn by a young stylish woman or an elegant mature woman looking for a new spin on her classic pearl earrings.

So what are the trendiest of pieces found in most every designer’s fall and upcoming spring collections? Ear cuffs, emeralds and collars. Gamble explains more about why the fashion world has embraced these pieces, and she gives advice on how to incorporate them into your own collection.

All of these can translate from fine jewelry to fashion jewelry (actually, not the emeralds) and, depending on the style, they can accommodate the fashion forward, the conservative woman, a woman that prefers simple clean lines and even the bohemian.
