“I think there are millions of people walking around on scripts that have missed the star of their life,” Kate Alexander says. “Be the thriving essence of who you are — it could be anything.”

As actress, director and associate director of Florida Studio Theatre (FST), it’s fitting that Kate Alexander uses a frequent analogy: Life is like a script.

She expands on this philosophy as she describes the plot of her upcoming acting endeavor, the two-character production by celebrated playwright John Murrell, “Taking Shakespeare.”

She says it follows two characters who meet at a time when their scripts for life just don’t feel right.

Her character, known simply as Prof, is an erudite professor who has alienated herself from the world. When Prof signs on to tutor Murph, a videogameobsessed slacker and son of the dean who’s failing freshman English, in Shakespeare, they both learn a lesson about finding their passions in life. The production opens July 23; it’s the first time Alexander has acted in a production at FST in four years.

wasn’t exactly the linear path she had planned, but it feels right. She came from New York to Florida Studio Theatre as a leading actress to anchor a new resident company in 1980. She never imagined her direction would involve setting permanent roots here and founding an education program at FST in 1982.

At first, she didn’t know if she even wanted to start a children’s program. But eight children had signed up for her summer camp.

“All my friends laughed at me, like, ‘How can you teach children?’ because classically trained actors just don’t do that,” Alexander says.

Alexander taught them exactly the way her professors taught her. On the first day she fiercly informed them that to be a good actor, you must have truth.

“If you’re going to cry on stage, you can’t just put on a sad face; you have to show your own sadness,” she told them.

In her role as director of “Becoming Dr. Ruth,” which closes July 27, Alexander spends eight hours of the day directing, in addition to overseeing all the other design elements.

She says she uses a knot in the back of her head to gauge how the performance is going.

The bigger the knot and headache — the harder she needs to work. There’s always a knot because directors have so much for which they are responsible.

But with acting, she doesn’t have to be in control of the entire production. She can spend her mornings enjoying coffee while she studies her script on the bayou near her house before rehearsal. It’s exactly what she’s doing these days as she prepares to open “Taking Shakespeare.”

She, of course, relates to her character in that she has had to find her own way in life — to adjust her script.

“I think at all points in life, we have to re-create ourselves,” she says. “So often, American culture tells us that our script is A to B to C to D — but things happen to people, and you have to reexamine everything.”

“In second grade we had to read aloud the Dick and Jane books.

Each child got one line to read … My line said ‘Run, Spot! Run!’ and I see this exclamation mark and had this dawning feeling that the character is yelling, and I got excited. I jumped out of my chair and yelled “RUN, SPOT! RUN!” My teacher walked slowly to my desk, rapped my forehead three times and told me, ‘Nobody reads with expression,’ and made me read it 10 times without expression.” “(When I was a child), I got all the kids in the neighborhood to bring a bedsheet and a bottle of ketchup to my house. I created a backyard Civil War Scene, smeared them all in ketchup and had them all wounded and moaning … I had the lead role of Florence Nightingale running around taking care of the wounded.”

“My father took me to see a play with my teacher in it. … The play had finished, and he went to talk to her backstage. They started turning off all of the lights, then the stagehand grabbed the blue ghost light and suddenly the whole theater was blue. I walked to the apron (to investigate the lights) and saw all this blue and the thought just came to me, ‘This is what you’re going to do.’”

Florida artists exhibit flavor Florida Flavor is the biggest juried all-media show Art Center Sarasota hosts all year. Every gallery at the center is filled with work from artists on the Gulf Coast. The second annual Florida Flavor exhibit opened July 10 and is on display through Aug. 15.

There is a diverse showing of everything from sculptures of Florida horses made of vintage stamps by Mindy Colton to impressive water-

color koi painted by Judy Saltzman inspired by Marie Selby Botanical Gardens.

There are full installations and 5-foot-tall oil paintings.

If the exhibit indicates any one thing, it’s that there is some remarkable talent in Sarasota.

The annual music speaker series hosted by June LeBell has already sold more than 700 subscriptions for the upcoming season. And that was before speakers had been announced.

LeBell (the Observer’s music critic and classical music announcer) curates and hosts the conversation-based program that features live music and interviews. She puts it best: “I want to make the audience feel as if they are in my living room and participating with someone extremely interesting,” she says.

One interview that was particularly interesting was when young classical pianist Charlie Albright spoke as part of the series in January 2013. Albright began talking about how he played rock music as a child.

To demonstrate, he went to the piano and played “Great Balls of Fire.” It left such an impression

on the audience, he’s returning in the upcoming season March 2.

Last season’s 475 subscriptions sold out in nine days. This year the series is moving from Holley Hall to Church of the Palms, 3224 Bee Ridge Road, to accommodate nearly double the people.

One reason for the program’s success might be because one never knows what to expect.

LeBell never writes out her questions; nothing (aside from the music selections played during the interview) is planned in advance.

“I just open my mouth and whatever pops out pops out,” LeBell says.

If practice really does make perfect, then LeBell’s extensive career interviewing famous arts figures on New York City’s WQXR for 30 years indicates what you could expect.

It’s something to which broadcaster Margaret Juntwait can relate. Juntwait is the nationally known announcer for Metropolitan Opera broadcasts and will speak as part of 2015 Music Mondays Jan. 19.

In Music Mondays, it’s not only the conversations that flow naturally. For instance, 79-yearold dancer Jacques d’Amboise choreographed a series of steps on the spot. Live performance is a big part of why the program sells so many tickets.

But another part of why tickets sell so well is because the program brings to Sarasota what attendees can’t normally get here. For example, leading off the series Jan. 5 is composer Theodore Morrison. Attendees will hear live portions of his opera “Oscar” about the last days of Oscar Wilde, which premiered in 2013 at the Santa Fe Opera.

Some of the interviewees have

local ties. Baritone Todd Thomas will speak March 9. He’s not only one of the nation’s most sought-after singers, but LeBell says he portrays the meanest Scarpia she’s ever seen. He’s returning to the Sarasota Opera this season and, fortunately for the audience, will perform live in this season’s Music Monday series.

Also locally known is Jay Hunsberger. He is the principal tubist with Sarasota Orchestra and Sarasota Brass Quintet.

Then there are some wild cards. LeBell is particularly excited for Paul Novograd to speak about All Tame Animals, the supplier of animals to the Metropolitan opera.

“I think one of the reasons we sell out is because the audience trusts that between me and my advisory committee that we’ll bring people they’re interested in,” LeBell says.

Sticking with the Mediterranean look and warm tones, the dining room emphasizes an Old World Tuscan look.

Real bricks were adhered to the walls to achieve the realness of Tuscan streets inside the home. Radigan’s artist adhered the bricks, plastered them and used mortar in between each to achieve the aged-brick look.

A grand piece of art hangs in the dining room and is one of Radigan’s favorites, and is a muse for the overall design of her home. However, it doesn’t hang like a typical piece of art — it’s a part of the wall itself.

The frame that surrounded the art was too large for the space, so Radigan’s artist cut it out of the frame, adhered it to the wall and feathered it in, to make it appear as though it was painted on the wall itself.

Because the home has no living room, Angela needed a place for her piano. When designing the home, the Radigans came up with the idea of emphasizing an area of the home specifically for her baby grand. Incidentally, the grand area for the piano is one of the many focal points of design in the home. With circular windows looking out to the backyard and golf course, the area is adorned with columns and an ornately painted round ceiling.

Connected to the dining room is the home’s butler’s pantry and wine room. A wrought-iron design piece is placed over the glass window looking into the wine room, continuing the Old World look.

Further continuing the style are old wine barrels, which are used for storage as well as design appeal and the custom plaque displaying the Radigan’s family name.

We wanted a kitchen with a spacious table where we could all sit and look at each other. From family dinners, to homework, we are always here.

The spacious backyard overlooking the golf course is the ultimate gathering area. Underneath the covered porch (which can also be entirely enclosed by remote screen coverings) are many areas for seating and lounging, with spots around a doublesided fireplace, an area for gaming and ping pong and an outdoor kitchen and bar area with ample seating as well. In addition, there are covered areas spanning the width of the home with seating as well.

The pool area features fountains and a spa, along with a basketball hoop, and the yard also features a fire pit.

The kitchen features two-toned cabinets, two different granites, a weathered cast stone hood and bead boarding, providing many textures and materials to create a beautiful and functional design. The table is a built-in extension to the kitchen island, showcasing the same granite used on the island.
