EAST COUNTY — Lakewood Ranch resident Heather Perry plans to bark up so much business that she has plans to expand her new company even before it opens.

As Perry sits inside a redbrick home on Lorraine Road, she waves toward the tealpainted walls, a future juiceand-coffee bar and a pool out back dedicated to the exercise of dogs.

This place — the future Canine Ranch Country Club — is just a half-mile away from Perry’s most recent purchase: the 25-acre Faith Christian Church campus, at 8215 Lorraine Road.

During a community forum to select Lakewood’s next principal, Little’s enthusiasm about the school’s next chapter and his familiarity with Lakewood won over forum attendees, who included Executive Director of Secondary Schools Cynthia Saunders.

“I think because he’s currently there (at Lakewood Ranch High), he is very familiar with all the strong aspects that are in place,” Saunders said. “I’m hopeful he would support those and move forward. I liked that he had a plan to raise academic achievement, and I felt like he would stay for a while.”

Saunders and the four other members of her interview committee recommended Little for the open principal position, for which schools Superintendent Rick Mills announced his support July 3.

The Manatee County School District will vote on Little’s appointment at its next meeting, July 22.

At the recent forum, parents addressed concerns about their children’s safety in the school’s bathrooms.

“I think students should have a pass book that shows when they leave their classes to go to the bathroom,” Little said. “The next teacher can look at the student’s sheet, and, unless it’s an emergency, say, ‘No, you just went to the bathroom at this time.’ I think that will help.”

Little will also enforce the 90/10 model, which states that 90% of school disciplinary issues are caused by 10% of the school’s population, Little explained. He plans to target those students and find ways to help them, he said.

Little will also maintain the school’s “no fly zone,” which prohibits students from leaving class the first and last 10 minutes of class — two of the most crucial timeframes, Little said. Teachers review what the students learned the previous class in the first few minutes of class and summarize the day’s lesson in the last 10 minutes, he said.

Although Little spoke frequently about the need for more administrator presence, he reminds his students and their families that education is his focus.

“First of all, this school is an educational institution,” Little said. “I’m focused on closing the achievement gap.

I’m going to identify students who are struggling by analyzing test scores and data, so we can help get them on track.

We need to create those safety nets to help them succeed.”

Little has been an assistant principal at Lakewood for four years. Prior to 2010, he worked as a physical education teacher at Lakewood Ranch High from 2001 to 2005. The New Jersey native then accepted his first assistant principal position at Haile Middle School.

The father of a 6-year-old, Alyssa, said his evolution as a teacher and as an assistant principal at the school he will now lead has prepared him for his next role. “(It) really means coming full circle,” Little said. “I’m in the business of building relationships and that’s what I’ve done since I started here, as a teacher and then as an administrator. I told parents and students, I know the faculty here. I’ve worked alongside them for years.”

WCI purchases Rosedale homesites The company acquired land from M/I Homes and Newton Developments.

ROSEDALE — Bonita Springs-based developer and homebuilder WCI Communities has purchased 150 homesites within the Rosedale Country Club.

The company purchased 93 homesites from Newton Developments, the developer of Rosedale, as well as 57 homesites from M/I Homes. The homesites are located within the newest section of Rosedale, The Links at Rosedale.

WCI plans to start construction on new homes in August. It will build two furnished models — the Key Largo and the Martinique, which will act as the

company’s sales office for Rosedale.

“The Links at Rosedale presents a terrific opportunity for WCI’s homebuyers,” said David Ivin, president of WCI’s north region. “The community is well established and has an extensive collection of amenities already in place, including a championship golf course.”

Ivin said the community’s location off State Road 70 and just east of Interstate 75 also is a benefit for residents.

“We’ve been developing high-end master-planned communities for decades, and we know quality development,” Ivin said. “Rosedale meets our high standards.”

EAST COUNTY — Events surrounding the confiscation of animals from Napier Log Cabin Horse & Animal Sanctuary in February have caused a stir among the animal rescue community.

After Manatee County Sheriff’s reports indicated there were complaints of suspected animal abuse at Napier’s for more than a year, the county is looking closely at the Animal Services department.

The county’s Director of Public Safety Ron Koper hopes to address community concerns and uncover the department’s strengths and weaknesses in handling animal-abuse situations.

Within the next two weeks, an out-of-state firm will be selected and will travel to the Palmetto-based adoption center to delve into Animal Services’ enforcement and adoption procedures, county spokesman Nicholas Azzara said.

Koper said the investigation could take up to 12 weeks to complete.

“A portion of the community isn’t happy with the way (Animal Services) has been doing adoptions, handling business lately,” Koper said. “So, I think this is a good opportunity for us to ask ourselves, “What can we do better?”

Officials expect the results to provide ways to better manage and prevent abuse against animals.

Koper said he already knows what to expect from the findings.

He believes the results will include the Palmetto building’s limited capacity to house the 2,000 to 3,000 animals that pass through its doors each year. Currently, Koper estimates 150 adoptable animals live at Animal Services.

For Animal Services to continue operating, it needs a larger facility, more volunteers and more funding, Koper said.

“For the number of animals we deal with in the community, the number of investigations we have to conduct, the number of shelters we have to provide, we’re understaffed and under resourced,” Koper said. “The majority of the community doesn’t want their taxes raised to do more, and there’s not an unlimited amount of resources or personnel I can hire or pay. The job we do is limited to what our resources will allow.”

Manatee County must also satisfy its no-kill status by saving at least 90% of the animals it takes in. Manatee County is currently at an estimated 96% save rate, Koper said.

Having a high number of animals and few volunteers present to take care of them makes enforcement tasks outside of cleaning, feeding and other adoption-related duties more difficult, Koper said.

However, the Manatee Animal Partnership Study (MAPS), which local rescue-group officials, county officials and other responders completed and was presented to county commissioners June 17, showed 90% of individuals surveyed said the county’s no-kill policy is necessary.

Under the scenario, the county would maintain the enforcement responsibilities of the animal services department, but would no longer adopt out animals. The partnering shelter(s) would raise the funds to pay for the costs associated with housing the additional animals, Koper said.

“We’re open to the idea of a not-for-profit doing the job better than we can,” Koper said.

EAST COUNTY — A project to bring reclaimed water from the city of Bradenton to Lakewood Ranch is nearly complete, after more than a year of construction.

Braden River Utilities, a subsidiary of Lakewood Ranch developer SchroederManatee Ranch, began work on the 11mile transmission line, connecting a new pump station near Pirate City and Mixon Fruit Farms to about White Eagle Boulevard (formerly Pope Road) last summer.

“We are now waiting on the last of the Braden River Utilities-issued pipeline contracts to be completed before any water can begin to be pumped,” said Jim McLellan, engineering section manager for the city of Bradenton’s Public Works and Utilities department. “The last pipeline contract was issued to the contractor in early June and at last update was expected to be completed in late July or early August.”

McLellan said once the line is completed, tested and approved for operation, the city of Bradenton can begin delivery of water to Lakewood Ranch — likely in August.

The Southwest Florida Water Management District and BRU are sharing the cost of the $11 million project, which brings water roughly from the River Run Water Treatment Plant, along 45th Street East and along State Road 70, into Lakewood Ranch.

This spring, BRU expanded the project

slightly to include a supply line on Pope Road/White Eagle Boulevard into an existing lake. The addition will allow Schroeder-Manatee Ranch’s Lakewood Center DRI project to receive bulk reclaimed water for irrigation in the future and to extend the transmission line north, using some remaining pipe generated by a routing change in phase II of the project, said Bob Simons, president of SMR subsidiary LWR Development and overseer of the project. “(It) will help provide future bulk delivery of reclaimed water to more end users,” Simons said of the change.

The contract with the city of Bradenton allows Lakewood Ranch to receive up to 6 million gallons of water per day.

BRU began receiving about 2 million gallons of reclaimed water from the city of Sarasota in November 2012. BRU began design on the pipeline for water from the city of Bradenton in early 2012.

Simons said bringing reclaimed water to Lakewood Ranch will improve overall water quality by displacing the ground and surface water currently used for irrigation. Well water, in particular, becomes saltier and poorer in quality — factors that impact landscaping — over time.

Per SMR’s development of regional impact requirements, it cannot use potable water for irrigation in Lakewood Ranch.

Manatee property values on the rise East County property values have increased 12.14%, excluding new construction, compared with 2013.

EAST COUNTY — The East County area is leading the county in property value increases and new construction.

The Manatee County Property Appraiser’s Office reported July 1 that total countywide taxable value increased to $25.9 billion, compared with $24.1 billion last year — a 7.48% increase, including new construction.

New construction taxable values are estimated at $532.7 million.

In the East County area, total taxable values increased from $5.16 billion to $5.79 billion, about 12.14%.

“The East County area actually has seen a 12.14% increase in values and has had the majority of new construction,” said Mark Johns, director of appraisal services for the Property Appraiser’s Office. “We’ve seen a real influx of activity out there over the last year and one half. All the growth of new homes and new construction are occurring in the East County, Lakewood Ranch area, in general, and the northeast area of the county, Ellenton and Parrish.”

The East Manatee Fire Rescue District, which covers the bulk of the East County area, saw market value increases jump 15.02%, with $7,618,418,485 values for 2014 and $6,623,453,233 for 2013.

Johns said the Property Appraiser’s Office reviewed 9,000 qualified residential sales (excludes foreclosures) to determine estimated values as of Jan. 1.

$520 million budget released June 3 anticipated property values would rise between 6.5% and 7%.

County Financial Management Director Jim Seuffert said the new values are slightly higher than projected and will bring in an additional $625,000 to the county. Of that amount, more than half will be designated to the Southwest County Tax Increment Financing District for redevelopment in the southwest county area.

“We’ll be reviewing those numbers with (County Administrator Ed) Hunzeker, and he’ll be considering the different options we might have, in terms of any changes he might want to recommend (on how we spend the money).”

The Manatee County Board of County Commissioners’ next budget meeting is scheduled for July 30.

EAST COUNTY — The Fort Hamer Bridge is coming.

The U.S. Coast Guard issued the last permit needed to move forward on the project June 27, marking the end of a permitting process that took four years to complete.

The estimated $22 million two-lane north-south bridge will now enter the design phase, said Ken Bontrager, bridge project manager for Manatee County.

“This is a pretty big milestone for the project,” Bontrager said. “This means the permitting process is finally complete.”

Bontrager anticipates design will be finished by September.

Bids for construction would soon follow and construction likely will begin in February 2015.

Once finished, the bridge will connect Fort Hamer Park to Upper Manatee River Road.

The road to complete permit approval was multifold.

Because the bridge crosses over a body of water, it must receive permitting from the U.S. Coast Guard.

To persuade the Coast Guard to OK the bridge, the project had to meet requirements spelled out in the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), said Marty Peate, senior project manager for URS Corp., the company hired to oversee completion of the environmental impact study for the bridge project.

Peate helped conduct the review process to ensure the bridge complies with

NEPA requirements.

More than 30 factors are considered throughout the process of deciding if a project meets NEPA standards, including environmental impacts, alternative routes and economical factors.

NEPA also factors in other requirements, such as satisfying clean air, endangered species, historic preservation and other acts already in place.

“The NEPA process is a discovery and disclosure process for decision making,” Peate said. “You evaluate the conditions of the area of where you want to build something before you take any action.

You want to make sure you minimize the impacts; you just want to be cost effective and construct something that satisfies the main reason for doing the project.”

The estimated $22 million bridge will connect Fort Hamer and Upper Manatee River roads.

+ Bridge basics Once finished, the Fort Hamer Bridge will cross the Manatee River to connect Upper Manatee River Road to the south with Fort Hamer Road to the north.

The two-lane bridge will be about 2,200 linear feet and will include 10-foot shoulder/auxiliary lanes on each side of the travel lanes. It also will have a 5-foot sidewalk on one side of the bridge.

Manatee County considers the bridget the final piece in the longplanned 44th Avenue Extension, which connects Cortez Road and its nearby beaches in the west to Lakewood Ranch and the surrounding area, in the east.

The U.S. Coast Guard held its last public meeting on the project in August 2013. The organization endorsed the Fort Hamer proposal over other options, in April.

roadways, such as Rye Road.

Upper Manatee River Road will connect the proposed bridge to State Road 64 and Rye Road.

In the analysis, URS considered widening the Rye Road Bridge to cross over Manatee River. Peate thought the idea would help ease congestion on I-75 for local drivers.

“You only really have Rye Road there, unless you use the interstate,” Peate said.

“Local drivers are just trying to get across that river. All those local trips taken by people who never intended to use the interstate will now have the opportunity for local trips on local roads.”

But in its final report, URS found the Fort Hamer Bridge option provided shorter emergency-response times and proved more cost effective than expanding the Rye Road Bridge — a best-case scenario.

The project, formerly known as the Manatee River Road Brige project, has been in the works since since 1999, then as a Florida Department of Transportation project. It lost steam around 2005, Peate said.

Manatee County decided to resurrect the project around 2009.

Today, Bontrager thinks of the bigger picture in what the bridge represents — a fast and safe route during emergencies.

“Fort Hamer will allow people north of the river to come to the south to receive

medical attention, and the bridge will be another hurricane evacuation route if I-75 gets too full or closes down,” Bontrager said. “People will have an alternate way to cross the river.”

The thought prompted Perry to look for additional acreage.

She heard Faith may be torn for development and contacted its owner, C1 Bank. The Manatee County Planning Commission had recommended denial of the proposed development at a May 8 hearing, and the Manatee County Board of County Commissioners was slated to hear the proposal June 5, but the item was delayed.

The Perrys purchased the 25acre Faith site June 4 for $991,000 — the bank’s asking price — with the plan to subdivide the acreage.

“Everybody we met really wanted the church to stay a church,” Perry said. “We wanted to by more property because we are opening what you see here.”

“I think I caught the bank at the right time,” she said. “I said, ‘My plan is to keep it a church and subdivide it.’ I will keep the other 18 acres.”

Although Perry promised her husband she wouldn’t do anything with the new property for one year, she said she couldn’t help but return a few phone calls about it.

After speaking with representatives of three local churches, Perry already has a buyer: Happy Gospel Church.

Happy Gospel plans to close on about seven acres, including the church building, by the end of the month.

The Rev. Bill Bailey, Happy Gospel’s pastor, said Happy Gospel plans to prepare the building for services in August and open the facility to the public in September. Little renovation will be required, although landscaping needs improvement, he said.

Happy Gospel’s existing location on State Road 70 will modify its name and schedule with the change. Happy Gospel Church at the Ranch will hold services at 9 a.m. Sundays, while Happy Gospel Church at Bradenton will hold services (currently at 10 a.m.) at 11 a.m. Sundays.

Mathes said Benderson has been working on the plan and discussing it with project neighbors for about one year. It formally submitted the project for review last month.

Residential growth in the University Parkway area is outpacing retail growth, so Benderson would like to start construction early next year, Mathes said.

“Over the next six months, as we work through the county’s process, we’ll keep moving on the construction of new retail and office buildings along Cattlemen Road, with the construction of our first hotel at UTC and the final construction of the mall,” Mathes said. “As that work winds down, we’d like to be starting the final phase of UTC in order to keep the momentum up

+ Couple plans canine country club Heather Perry and her husband, Nathan, purchased an 8.6-acre property at 5557 Lorraine Road, one-half mile from the Faith church site, for their new business — the future Canine Ranch Country Club — in July 2013.

Since then, they have gutted the red-brick house there and reconfigured it to include a reception area, dog play areas, a grooming room and a members-only common area with teal-painted walls, couches and chairs, a juice bar and a room for doga (dog yoga). When finished, the property even will include walking trails, a dog-only pool, an agility course and other amenities.

Country club memberships likely will start around $30 a month, although Perry said prices have not yet been formalized and may change over time. Members will have access to the members’ lounge, dog pool, doga and dog-focused seminars and classes, as well as books, tapes and videos related to dogs.

Members also will receive discounts on services open to the general public, including dog massage, “pet-icures,” doggie daycare and more.

Perry, who promoted an online dating service before starting her own personal development center in Tyson’s Corner, Va., said she is confident the concept will be popular.

“I realized how much people like being a member of something with like-minded individuals,” Perry said.

“We’re not ready to release any tenant details in terms of retail, office and movie theater,” Mathes said. “In terms of hotels, Benderson owns and operates inside the Marriott and Hilton flags. We’re planning a blend of boutique and extended-stay options to complement the area.”

Mathes said on the western edge of the property in the SuperTarget plaza, Benderson also has submitted a request to start construction on a retail building immediately south of Sports Authority. Benderson would begin work on pads for three additional buildings there, as well.

He and the security officer located an open door that had caused the alarm to trip. The security officer said he saw what appeared to be a white female fleeing from the school property. The deputy was dispatched to the hotel to attempt to contact a person on behalf of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, which was investigating a missing-person report involving the subject. The deputy contacted the subject, who said she was fine.

Petit/Grand Theft — Shoplifting. The loss-prevention officer observed the suspect conceal two bicycle lights, torch fuel, batteries, beer and a cutter in his backpack. The suspect then proceeded past all points of sale without paying for the items. The suspect exited the store, but the loss-prevention officer stopped him. The suspect had personal items in the backpack, including a fan and boots.

The items taken from the store were returned. The suspect was wearing a neck brace and complained of neck pain. He stated he had broken his neck in two places about two weeks ago. At that time, he was treated at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

The deputy transported to the suspect to Manatee Memorial Hospital for treatment.

JULY 4 10:30 a.m. — 6300 block of Yellowtop Drive. Found Property. The reporting party came into the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office to turn in a wallet she had found around 6 a.m. in her front yard.

Deputies contacted the owner of the wallet. He came to the sheriff’s office and was verified as its owner. All contents were in the wallet, and deputies returned it to its owner.

Students make history in national championship Nolan Middle School students set a National TSA Conference record with 10 trophies and 10 Top-10 finishes.

EAST COUNTY — Maureen Hudson is carving her name in Nolan Middle School’s history.

Hudson, who has only been teaching technology and leading the school’s Technology Student Association program since September, recently led her students to a record finish.

She and the 32 students on Nolan’s TSA team made competition history when they clinched the most trophies ever won by a single school at the middle school level of the National TSA Conference, held June 27 through July 1, in Washington, D.C. Nolan students took home seven first-place trophies, two second-place trophies and one third-place trophy, along with 10 Top-10 finishes.

With the wins, Nolan also captured the championship title for the middle school division of the competition.

Braden River High students took home second place overall in national competition, winning trophies in Career Comparison, Future Tech Teacher, Essays on Technology and Structural Engineering categories, TSA adviser Gil Burlew said.

Although Nolan Middle has a reputation of dominating state and national championships —

which now includes four national championship titles in five years — Hudson and her team didn’t know how well they ranked until the awards ceremony July 1.

“We knew we were doing well, but you never know until the awards ceremony where the chips are going to fall,” Hudson said. “We were just so super excited. It couldn’t have turned out any better. There are always a couple of disappointments, but you can’t complain when you have that many kids walk across the stage.”

Students competed in more than 30 categories at the national competition, which features about 200 teams of students from the United States and other countries, such as Germany.

The four-day competition included a variety of challenges, including interviews with judges and building onsite projects without knowing the assignment in advance Hudson said.

Events ranged from Prepared Speech and Essays on Technology to Dragster Design and Structural Engineering.

Students were also required to wear professional attire and to maintain a business-like appearance during the entire competition. TSA uses the events and regulations to support Sci-

“The thing I’m most proud of is their work ethic and the time they put into it,” Hudson said.

“We’re asking these kids to do very adult things. We’re asking them to create projects, write binders, go into interviews and learn programs that many adults don’t know.”

National spotlight Nineteen Monsters Lacrosse Academy players were selected for LB3 National Teams.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Matt McDonnell isn’t one to take the game-winning shot.

Or really any shot, for that matter.

The Monsters Lacrosse Academy U15 defender is more comfortable defending the goal and passing the ball to his teammates so they can revel in the limelight.

But seven months ago, the Lakewood Ranch High School freshman didn’t have a choice but to fire a shot from the wing area, just beyond midfield.

McDonnell didn’t think much of it. He started to retreat to the defensive area when he heard the whistle signaling a goal. He realized he had scored his first and only goal when his teammates came rushing toward him.

“I walked away because I didn’t think I scored,” McDonnell says. “I was really happy, though, when I realized I did. It was so much fun.”

Recently, McDonnell was recognized for his efforts by being named to the LB3 Lacrosse 2018 National Team.

The LB3 Lacrosse National teams comprise the best players from the full LB3 family of club teams across the nation, of which the Monsters Lacrosse Academy is a part. Team members range in age from U11 to high school.

“I was surprised and really happy because there are so many LB3 teams and players,” McDonnell says. “I wanted to be able to work with the best coaches and face some of the top teams. It sounded like fun to me, and I thought if I made it, then I could use it as an (opportunity) to get better.”

McDonnell was one of 19 Monsters Lacrosse Academy players and one of three U15 players selected for the national team. Selected players were placed onto teams based on their graduation year.

“I was excited because not many people were chosen to go to Maryland,” 11-year-old Connor Rice says. “It just means that I work hard enough to (compete) for different elite teams.”

Children competed against 2,500 other players at each level for one of 17 spots. About four Monsters Lacrosse Academy players were chosen at each level.

“It’s very exciting knowing that from all over the nation only a few kids were chosen,” 11-yearold Stephen Markowski says.

cerned, we most certainly have kids who have put in the work that will allow them to excel playing against kids from the traditional hotbeds in the country,” Monsters Lacrosse Academy Vice President and Director of Coaching Chris Markowski says. “Our teams and many of our players have done very well over the past couple years in proving they belong. These kids deserve this fantastic opportunity because of their work, time and effort.”

McDonnell, along with U15 teammates Jack Koscho and Juan Gonzalez, will compete in the FLG in 3D Summer Shootout July 18 through July 20, in Bel Air, Md. The U11 and U13 teams (2017 through 2021) also will

compete the same weekend. The 2016 team will compete in the UA Shootout July 13 through July 16, in Baltimore.

National players will spend a day practicing with their new teams before competing in a series of tournament games. All teams are guaranteed a minimum of five games over the course of the tournament with the top teams advancing to championship rounds.

The players have been practicing three days a week since the selections were announced.

In addition to competing in the tournament, the players plan to use the experience to gain exposure and improve their skills on the field.

“(John) Ringling and his wife built a library to actually use,” James Tapley says. “Every book gives you an insight into their minds: what they were thinking, looking at, what interested them, and, in that sense, every book in the collection is of equal value and equal interest.”

One for the books A 12-year-old James Tapley browses the stacks of the public library in Lakeland — his refuge from a poor family life. It’s the place where he finds solace feeding his rapacious reading appetite.

A book catches his eye. He pulls it down.

It’s a book about French decorative arts between the first and second World Wars, and it falls open to a double-page spread on book binding — the most beautiful thing he had ever seen.

“That’s when I decided I wanted to become a bookbinder,” he says.

Tapley, The Ringling Museum’s 63-year-

old contracted bookbinder, operates from an old 1950s tire store beginning at 4 a.m. Not-so-white noise of foreign films drones in the background as he repairs and restores old books.

The Ringling’s rare-book collection dates back to 1475 (books that were printed on the first generation of printing presses). Aside from that collection, he’s repaired everything from a collection of Egyptian papyrus to old family prayer books. Sometimes, he creates bindings for publishers’ limited-edition prints — collectors’ items bound by hand.

Many of the rare books Tapley restores for The Ringling once sat on the shelves at John and Mable Ringling’s home. These art and architectural books the couple collected informed their art purchases.

“You don’t get the idea he bought things just to impress someone else,” Tapley says. “You get the idea the only person he was interested in impressing was himself.”

Tapley knows because he reads everything he restores. He’s the kind of guy you’d hate to oppose in Trivial Pursuit.

He can tell many things about baroque master Peter Paul Rubens or many of the other artists who make up the permanent collection.

When he works on rare books, he might strip the book down to individual sheets of paper and rebuild it to a condition that will preserve it into the future — what he calls “minimally undoing all previous damage.”

If he’s lucky, the book he’s working on hasn’t been repaired before. Advances in materials and science make books that were repaired decades ago nightmarish.

“We look back at horror on what we actually did in those days,” he says.

He also hates library tape stuck down broken splits — tape produces degradation and byproducts that further deteriorate.

“Tape is a four-letter word,” he says.

He’d never use tape on his own collection vastly devoted to books about bookbinding.

He could tell you the whole history of bookbinders: how books have become increasingly shoddy compared with their 15th-century counterparts, when 250 books were printed per press run on fine Italian paper with high-quality ink, press work and book bindings. As more people became educated, there were higher demands for more copies, and printers had to cut corners.

Tapley thinks books as an object are not going to disappear.

Prior to the Community Dedication, our conversations with the craftsmen who built Patriot Plaza revealed that this was not just a job. They shared—each in their own way—that Patriot Plaza is their individual contribution to our nation. They knew they were creating something that would have meaning for their grandchildren's grandchildren.

During and after the Community Dedication, it was clear that this gift belongs to everyone, especially those who have served, are serving, or may serve in our nation’s armed forces as well as their families. There were many poignant moments as people shared stories that were deep with memories and meaning.

We are so appreciative of our caring community—more than 2,000 people—who attended the dedication to honor veterans and celebrate a spirit of patriotism that exudes from our region.

We are grateful for our volunteers who worked tirelessly, giving up hours of their time to ensure that the event went as smoothly as possible. We empathize with those who were affected by the near-record heat. We are also aware of the delays relating to transportation to and from the event.

Campers in Lakewood Ranch High School’s Acting Up Performing Arts Camp brought to life a variation of the Broadway hit and 1988 comedy film “Hairspray” with performances of Hairspray Jr. June 26, at the high school.

Set in 1962 in Baltimore, the show follows the life of a teenager named Tracy Turnblad as she pursues stardom as a dancer on the “The Corny Collins Show” and fights against racial segregation.

Hundreds of automotive and boating enthusiasts turned out June 29 to Lakewood Ranch Main Street, as it hosted the 30th annual Super Boat Grand Prix Festival Car Show.

The event marked day two of the weeklong festival, which ran June 28 through July 6. Other festival activities included boat races, a motorcycle ride and a bikini contest.
