EAST COUNTY — The expression, “The sooner the better,” is an understatement for the Manatee County School District.

After the School Board extended an offer to Dr. Justin Terry — a Texan with 13 years of educator experience — for the principal

position at Lakewood Ranch High School June 10. Terry declined the job. He had accepted the deputy superintendent of schools position in his current district, in Wylie, Texas.

“Sometimes other opportunities arise when you let someone

know you might leave for another job,” said Cynthia Saunders, executive director of secondary schools. “The candidate made the best decision for his family, and we have to respect that.”

Road privatization under review Some Lakewood Ranch CDD supervisors want to own CDD roads to monitor visitors’ access, but the idea faces many hurdles.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — If Lakewood Ranch Country Club residents want complete ownership of their gates and to oversee who goes in and out of them, they need to take control of the roads. The path to privatizing the roads, though, is daunting.

During Community Development District meetings June 12, at Lakewood Ranch Town Hall, CDD board members revealed a group of CDD board members formed a committee to investigate the possibility of privatizing roads within CDDs 2, 5 and 6. All

three of the CDDs, which are located within the boundaries of the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club, are gated.

But, because the roads were paid for with a bond through the

“I’ll be working with different businesses all the time. It’ll always be changing,” DeCastro said, noting merchants on Lakewood Ranch Main Street sign three-year leases. “That’s exciting to me.”

Only four days into her new role, DeCastro has already started to set personal goals.

Once she understands the mall’s policies and procedures for acquiring clients, she plans to travel to other shopping hubs to see which kiosks those centers feature.

She also plans to search online stores that don’t have an active physical presence in malls to see if a temporary space might appeal to those business owners.

DeCastro looks forward to finding products online and hidden in stores and having business owners display them in a separate kiosk.

“Taking something fabulous and making it stand out — I just love that,” DeCastro said. “That’s what these kiosks can do.”

Most importantly, she must remember her demographic when scouting out prospects, she said.

“We’re not just going to see people from Lakewood Ranch at this mall,” DeCastro said. “This is one of the only, if not the only, high-end malls between here and Naples. Our customers will be from Sarasota, Tampa, all over.”

DeCastro started her career in leasing and sales in the ’90s, when she worked for The Hanover Co. — a Texas-based private real estate company that specializes in developing highquality, multi-family residential properties.

ABOUT DECASTRO Julia DeCastro has two daughters: Savannah, 12, and Emma, 11.

She’s an avid runner and exercises three to four mornings a week. and a sales manager position brought her and her family to Sarasota in 2003.

DeCastro, a University Place resident, joined the Lakewood Ranch Commercial Realty team five years ago.

Saying goodbye to coworkers and Main Street business owners felt bittersweet, but DeCastro said her previous position’s emphasis on teamwork prepared her for her new job.

“The timing just worked out,” DeCastro said. “I felt like I accomplished what I came to accomplish (100% leasing on Main Street). It’s time for a new journey.”

MANATEE COUNTY — East County resident and former Interim Superintendent Bob Gagnon has been cleared of criminal charges in a case stemming from his time as the former principal at Manatee High School.

Manatee’s former assistant football coach Rod Frazier had been charged with inappropriately touching students and staff.

Gagnon and two other assistant principals at Manatee — Gregg Faller Gagnon and Matthew Kane — were each charged with one misdemeanor count of failing to report child abuse and one felony count of failing to report child abuse. They each faced up to five years in prison.

Twelfth Judicial Circuit Court Judge Peter Dubensky acquitted Gagnon Tuesday, saying “no reasonable human” would believe Gagnon understood a child was being abused based on the information he had been given.

“That’s important to note,” Gagnon’s attorney, Richard Reinhart, said. “Mr. Gagnon was a principal.

He had limited knowledge.”

Reinhart said he and his client felt vindicated by the decision.

“We’re very happy the judge saw through the political shenanigans involved in this case,” he said.

As of press time Tuesday, Reinhart and Gagnon awaited receiving a recommended order from Administrative Law Judge Lynne Quimby on whether Gagnon should have been suspended without pay by the Manatee County School District, for which he served as assistant superintendent of teaching and learning. The order was due June 11.

The order will be submitted to the Manatee County School Board, which will issue the final order.

Reinhart said the issue is separate from the criminal charge, and the School District has notified Gagnon it does not intend to renew his employment contract.

Reinhart said he and Gagnon will explore legal options after those decisions are rendered.

EAST COUNTY — Although Julia DeCastro moved to Sarasota more than a decade ago for a more relaxed lifestyle, the soccer mom’s career has been anything but slow.

A Virginia native who grew up just outside of Washington, D.C., DeCastro can’t shake the big city hustle she has known throughout her career in residential and commercial real estate sales.

She looks for new challenges and finds ways to accomplish them, such as her most recent feat of leasing 100% of Lakewood Ranch Main Street, she said.

“I’m kind of an overachiever,” DeCastro said.

DeCastro left her position as director of leasing and sales for Lakewood Ranch Commercial Realty and property manager of Lakewood Ranch Main Street June 6. Now, she’s focusing on her next challenge — The Mall at University Town Center.

The mother of two started in specialty leasing for the underconstruction mall June 16.

The mall opens Oct. 16, giving DeCastro less than six months to build relationships with business owners and secure contracts with them, she said.

Her new job centers on leasing short-term spaces in the mall, such as kiosks and other temporary sales fixtures.

“The kiosk owner doesn’t sign a long lease. Specialty leasing is more of a trial basis,” DeCastro said. “Owners get to know the area and its demographics to see how well their business would do in the mall before committing to a store. They test the waters first.”

The kiosks often found in other area shopping centers, such as Westfield Sarasota Square and International Plaza malls, sell cell phone accessories, beauty products and a range of other items passersby may need.

Typically, kiosk owners lease spaces for 60 to 90 days and usually no longer than a year.

MANATEE COUNTY — Manatee County Sheriff Brad Steube’s budget constraints can’t keep up with East County’s growth, and that’s a big concern for the Manatee County Board of County Commissioners.

At a budget workshop June 11, at the Manatee County Administration Center, Steube unveiled a $104.38 million expenditure budget for the new fiscal year that begins Oct. 1. Steube’s current fiscal year spending budget is $99.38 million.

The expenditure budget is 5% more than last year’s budget, but lower than commissioners anticipated.

That’s because earlier this year, Steube informed commissioners he would seek a spending budget with a 7.8% when compared with the current fiscal year’s budget. That budget came with a price tag of $107 million.

Steube wants to add eight patrol officers at a cost of $1.1 million and four corrections officers at a cost of more than $334,000.

To offset that cost, Steube has applied for a grant that would fund $125,000 of each new patrol deputy’s pay for a threeyear period.

But the grant isn’t secure, and Steube doesn’t know if it will come through.

“I’m competing with hundreds of other agencies for this grant,” Steube said.

The news concerned commissioners.

“According to the latest census numbers, the patrol presence we try to achieve is already way off,” Commission-

er John Chappie said. “People are moving out east permanently. Tourist rates are sky high, and law enforcement is a key factor when dealing with all this.”

Steube agreed with commissioners, but expressed his frustration with budget constraints.

Commissioners expressed a willingness to work with Steube this summer during the budget process to free up more money for his department that could create more officer positions.

Lakewood Ranch resident Steve Vernon, who stepped to the podium to express his concerns, liked what he heard.

“Your first and highest responsibility of this commission is to provide for public safety of the citizens of Manatee County,” Vernon said. “The county has spent a lot of money on many items much less important than public safety.”

The 5% increase in the spending budget will give deputies a 3.5% to 4% pay increase and a 1.5% to 2% pay increase for supervisors, Steube said. It will also help pay for an additional $381,000 needed this year to make increased contributions to the state’s retirement system.

Raises, which commissioners approved last year, have lessened the turnover rates for deputies and kept Steube’s department competitive with nearby agencies.

Steube lost 43 deputy officers to turnover in 2011, but reported he’s only lost 15 officers this year. Eight of those officers retired.

Specifically, Rey, 46, pointed to improved customer service and communication and the new Lakewood Ranch government website as her biggest accomplishments. She’s even the webmaster of Town Hall’s site, and she can do basic HTML coding.

The biggest project to date under her watch — Town Hall’s new maintenance building — finished on time and under budget.

CDD meetings also operate smoothly under her watch and rarely go past budgeted time.

The first phase of an irrigation plan also proved successful. Town Hall rolled out a rebate program two years ago to promote the use of soil-moisture sensors, in a move to save water.

“When I look at the organization now and what it was when I walked in these doors, it’s really not the same anymore,” Rey said. “I looked at our processes and saw my fingerprints in so many places. I’m proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish so far, and I’m ready to focus on the next three years.”

Lakewood Ranch Town Hall Executive Director Eva Rey received positive recommendations and unanimous support from Lakewood Ranch InterDistrict Authority Chairman Tom Green and his fellow board members in the following categories:

LAKEWOOD RANCH — June 12 was a good day for Lakewood Ranch Town Hall Executive Director Eva Rey. She received unanimous support and positive recommendations from every Lakewood Ranch Inter-District Authority and Community Development District board member, a 5% raise that brings her annual salary from $130,000 to $136,500 and a $5,000 bonus.

The Lakewood Ranch InterDistrict Authority unanimously approved a new three-year contract and her new salary, which becomes effective Aug. 1.

IDA Chairman Tom Green said all the Lakewood Ranch Community Development District boards “are 100% behind this new contract.”

Green cited Rey’s ability to improve customer service and communication at Town Hall and among residents as “just outstanding.”

To improve communication, Rey has set up a comment card system through which she can receive direct feedback from residents. The process has resulted in improvements — after a resident complained of hard-to-find bicycle racks, Town Hall installed a new one in front of the building.

FDOT intends to widen the 3.5-mile stretch of roadway to an eight-lane highway with three through lanes and one auxiliary lane in each direction. The project also includes the widening of the I-75 bridge across Erie Creek and replacing the I-75 overpass at University Parkway with a double diverging-diamond configuration.

FDOT plans to widen the 1-mile stretch of University Parkway from Cattlemen Road/Cooper Creek Boulevard to Market Street, as well.

Funding for project construction currently is not included in FDOT’s five-year work program, but FDOT officials have vowed to find alternative funding sources and to move the project forward as quickly as possible.

EAST COUNTY — The Florida Department of Transportation seeks public input as it moves forward with plans to widen Interstate 75 and reconfigure the interstate’s intersection with University Parkway.

The FDOT will host a public meeting from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

June 26, at the Holiday Inn Lakewood Ranch, 6231 Lake Osprey Drive, Sarasota.

“We want the community to know what’s going on — that’s why it’s important,” FDOT District 1 Communication Specialist Robin Stublen said.

Stublen said the public will be able to see what the proposed I-75 design looks like and how it will function and speak with FDOT staff at the meeting.

The meeting is part of FDOT’s plan to raise awareness about proposed I-75 corridor improvements, which span roughly from Fruitville Road to University Parkway.

Rosedale promotes summer music series ROSEDALE — It’s no secret — Chuck Nehls loves opera music.

In fact, when he accepted the manager position at Rosedale Golf & Country Club’s clubhouse eight years ago, he made it his personal mission to persuade the community’s residents to appreciate the theatrics of the genre.

Nehls organized shows by Opera Tampa in October and February.

“When I told residents I wanted to bring the opera to Rosedale, they said, ‘Oh, please,’ like no one would come,” Nehls said. “Every performance has turned out to be standing-room only, so I knew there was an audience for (it).”

This summer, Rosedale will host a Summer Music Series open to the public thanks to its on-site opera enthusiast.

For $32, attendees of the event will enjoy dinner from 6 to 7 p.m. and a show by local performers at 8 p.m. June 26, July 17 and Aug. 14, at the clubhouse. Tickets are on sale now at the Rosedale clubhouse, 5100 87th St. E., Bradenton.

But the music won’t just appeal to opera fans. Nehls promises a show that speaks to a wide range of music-lovers.

Carol Sparrow, a mezzo-soprano, and Randolph Locke, a tenor, along with the groups of which the singers are members — Oasis Young Artists Program and Sarasota Voice Academy — will perform songs according to each

night’s theme.

The June performance will feature songs from Oscar-winning movies. July will feature Broadway hits; and August will feature music from famous operettas — more common songs from operas, Nehls said.

Locke and Sparrow, voice instructors at the State College of Florida Sarasota-Manatee, have performed worldwide in such as Germany, Italy and Switzerland.

As a mezzo-soprano, Sparrow sings with a tone “heavier and darker” than other sopranos, while Locke sings at the highest pitch in the male range, Nehls said.

After a year of planning the event, Nehls hopes bringing music into his workplace will provide East County residents summer offerings other than swimming and golf.

“This is really the first attempt at doing something over the summer,” Nehls said. “Normally clubs do very little other than a few activities, and that’s just not enough for me.”

Government officials discuss state politics Each quarter, Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance members hear progress reports from the government officials who represent them.

Attendees of the Legislative Wrapup and Luncheon June 11, at the Polo Grill and Bar’s Fête Ballroom, heard presentations on positive trends in real estate, the state budget, tourism and insurance markets from District 28 Sen. For some concerned Lakewood Ranch residents who live in the gated districts that’s a problem, because guests who enter don’t have to stop and report where they are going.

CDD 6 Assistant Secretary Bob Burstein called the pathway to privatizing the roads “very important.”

Although the communities are investing in new technology to make their communities safer, Burstein and others think more needs to be done.

“We’ve installed additional video that shows drivers, audio of conversations and who the person is and where they are going,” Burstein said. “But the reality is it’s not enough.”

CDD 6 also installed new LED barriers to increase safety and visibility in its community at night.

Lakewood Ranch Town Hall Executive Director Eva Rey, though, warns the concept is years away from coming to fruition and might not be possible.

“It’s an exploration of what legislative changes would be needed for something like this to take place,” Rey said. “It’s very far out, and it’s not even certain if Lakewood Ranch can do this because of the bonds tied to the road debt that are still needed to be paid off.”

Currently, roads within CDDs 1 (Greenbrook) and 4 (Summerfield/Riverwalk) are maintained

by Manatee County. CDDs 2, 5 and 6 (Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club) maintain roads within their boundaries because when they were built out and

“If the roads were privatized and in the hands of the homeowners association, we could become a real gated community,” said CDD 6 Vice Chairman James Hill. “But before that talk is valid, there needs to be legislation that enables it. It’s a complicated matter. For everyone in the community, we have to learn as we go.”

The Florida Legislature could change a law some day that would allow the CDDs to buy the roads, but state laws aren’t the only hurdle.

“Can you just pay off the road debt bond currently in place?”

Rey said. “We don’t know the answer to that.”

The interview committee will make its recommendation to Superintendent Rick Mills, and he will choose a candidate to support.

The decision isn’t official, however, until the School Board approves a candidate at its July 22 meeting.

A candidate must be in place as early as possible to complete the required training courses educators must attend prior to the start of the next school year, Saunders said.

Thus far, the new principal will have to make up the courses on new teacher evaluations, which will roll out in the 2014-2015 school year, held earlier this week.

The two-day meeting, along with a mid-July course on how to read student test scores and other state and local data, are necessary components to an incoming principal’s success, Saunders said.

“It’s vital for an administrator to learn how to prepare for the next school year by taking these courses,” Saunders said.

Saunders is making the principal search her top priority, she said.

Saunders posted the open position on the school district’s Internet employment hub, the Paperless Applicant Tracking System (PATS), June 12. The posting will stay active for 10 days. After it closes, Saunders’ search starts over again.

Saunders and her committee of educators will then select the top three candidates to attend a community forum she expects will be held July 2. At the forum, candidates will give brief presentations to attendees and field questions for about 30 minutes.

Although the forum runs during the summer, Saunders urges students, their families and everyone involved with Lakewood Ranch High to attend.

“It’s a moot issue until legislation is changed, but it needs to be on the table if the time ever comes where it’s allowed,” Hill said.

The CDD documents and ordinances that created the taxing districts already include language that would allow for mergers if and when the time is right and the state allows it.

Rey said that issue is also one that’s most likely years away from being more than a discussion, but she agreed it makes some sense.

“Those three CDDs have a lot in common,” Rey said. “But the reality of that happening is uncertain.”

Former candidates Scott Cooper and Tony Losada, whom Terry initially competed against for the principal position, took positions at other schools in the district. Cooper is the new principal of Electa Lee Magnet Middle School, and Losada will lead Buffalo Creek Middle School.

Characteristics Saunders felt Cooper, Losada and Terry all shared — which she still places at the top of her criteria list for the next school leader — include a variety of administrator experience and community involvement.

The next principal must also be capable of maintaining the level of instruction and discipline Nesselhauf put in place when she became the Lakewood Ranch High principal in 2009, Saunders said. Saunders believes the school is on track to receive an “A” rating in the High School Accountability Grades, which the Florida Department of Education will release later this year.

“We’re confident we can find someone to lead such a wonderful school,” Saunders said. “Whoever gets the job is lucky and should be ready to hit the ground running.”

All Faiths, Big Cat roar for support EAST COUNTY — What happens when you couple exotic animals with live music?

A fundraiser for All Faiths Food Bank, in Sarasota.

The Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary and Bonfire Jam Band have partnered for a fundraiser benefiting All Faiths Food Bank’s Campaign Against Summer Hunger, an effort to feed more than 2,000 children in Sarasota this summer.

Jam Out Hunger will be held from noon to 5 p.m. June 21, at the habitat, 7101 Palmer Blvd., Sarasota. Guests who bring a bag of non-perishable grocery items or make a donation to the food bank receive free entry to the habitat.

Regular admission costs $15 for adults or $7 for children.

“It’s a wonderful partnership between the food bank and a very special organization,” All Faiths CEO Sandra Frank said.

“It’s a positive and fun kid-oriented way to feed other kids.”

The event, organized by volunteers Jackie and Ric Stuart, will include performances by the Bonfire Jam Band, the Heather Downie Band and the nationally known Mummers String Band of Philadelphia. Eventgoers can feed and view bears and big

“It’s a great cause,” Big Cat Habitat owner Kay Rosaire said. “I know people are really strapped for money right now,

but this issue (of hunger) is important.

“You know, a lion gets hungry like everyone else,” she said, adding she wanted to host the event to showcase the habitat’s offerings and to educate children about animals. “We’re trying to show that common ground.”

Frank said although the food bank surpassed its goal for its 40-day Campaign Against Summer Hunger, which ended May 10, by raising $1.1 million and 776,253 pounds of food, the organization launched new programs aimed at feeding children and their families this summer June 9.

New summer programs include increasing the number of school break spots providing lunch from 30 to 48, implementing a backpack program for summer school students and adding food distribution sites for the summer.

The need to provide food and funding for the programs continues, added Laura Coyle, director of marketing for All Faiths.

“Even though we exceeded our goal, we have a lot of kids to feed,” Coyle said. “We are still accepting help.”

All Faiths now focuses its efforts on educating children and families about its new programs and services, Coyle said.

In early summer, when children and families would be more available for visits, the organization partnered with Girls Inc. to offer 20 free, yearlong memberships to its families.

“It’s a great partnership for Girls Inc., because that’s what we’re all about — making sure our girls explore the world immediately around them and beyond. It was a perfect fit.”

Girls Inc. selected a group of its families with financial needs and entered them into a random drawing before announcing the winners.

“It was a big surprise,” says Ivonne Padilla, one of the winners. “We didn’t even know about Selby Gardens before. Training Day Former Southeast High quarterback Adrian McPherson will host a seven-week summer training program.

BRADENTON — Adrian McPherson has walked the same path countless times.

Growing up, the former Southeast High quarterback relied on his talent and his work ethic to prepare him to play at the next level, whether advancing from youth football to high school, high school to college, or college to the NFL. McPherson’s coaches guided him along the way, but with more than 50 other players competing for their attention, they could only do so much.

The Bradenton native didn’t have a former player — someone who had achieved the goals McPherson set for himself — to look up to or turn to for guidance.

And although that didn’t deter McPherson from following his dreams, looking back it was something he always wished he had.

Now, McPherson, who played at Florida State and spent a year with the New Orleans Saints before moving to the Arena Football League, hopes to be that source of inspiration for the area’s young up-and-coming athletes.

On June 16, McPherson officially launched his summer athletic training program at The McPherson Athletic Compound at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School. MAC is an advanced-training curriculum that addresses all areas of athletic performance and promotes character, development, leadership and overall

Braden River High graduate Payton Diss spent three years cheering for the Pirates. Now she’ll take her talents to Western Kentucky University.

COMPETITIVE EDGE Braden River High alumna Payton Diss will cheer for Western Kentucky University this fall.

BRADEN RIVER — Payton Diss wanted to be a part of it all.

The then-Braden River High freshman stood in the stands of Pirate Stadium, filled with maroon-and-blackclad students, and looked toward the sideline.

Her eyes weren’t glued to the players or what was happening on the field. Instead, Diss watched the cheerleaders perform routine after routine, all the while wishing she could hop down and join them.

Having just moved to Florida, Diss wasn’t able to cheer her freshman year of high school because she wasn’t a resident at the time of tryouts.

It was difficult for Diss to take a step back from the sport she loved. But, a year later, Diss finally got an opportunity to represent her school.

“It made it even better,” Diss says.

“I just enjoy being part of a team, and I really like the competitive season.

There’s such positive energy that just lights up the crowd.”

Diss spent the next three years cheering for Braden River before making the decision to pursue the sport in college.

Diss tried out for Western Kentucky University’s all-girl team at the end of April; she relied on her strong tumbling skills and ability to connect with an audience to separate her from the competition.

Diss, who also coaches gymnastics at Southwest Florida Gymnastics, was

Diss was asleep at the time of the announcement. She learned of her selection after a fellow cheerleader at tryouts came running down the stairs shouting and telling her to check her text messages.

Diss will travel to Bowling Green, Ky., for her first practice June 27, before attending cheerleading camp in July. Diss will officially return to WKU Aug. 13 for freshman orientation.

“Almost everyone I established a friendship with made it, so it was

(exciting) because I knew I would be cheering with them for the next four years,” Diss says. “I’m just really looking forward to the new people I’ll get to meet and getting to experience a different kind of cheer team.

“These girls are so passionate about cheerleading,” Diss says. “With high school teams, you don’t always have that, but in college, the girls really put their whole heart into it and give 110%.”

Payton Diss started doing cheerleading stunts when she was 18 months old while attending practices with her mother, Amy Diss, who was a cheerleading coach at the time.

When Diss was 3 years old, she began taking gymnastics. She trained competitively for about 10 years before turning her attention back to cheerleading.

“Going to practice and doing stunts (as a toddler) had a lot to do with my success as a cheerleader, but gymnastics is what really got me going,” Diss says.

DISS / PAGE 13A Diss has family in Kentucky, and after touring WKU with her grandfather and attending a handful of cheerleading clinics there, she quickly decided it was her school of choice.

“The campus is beautiful and the people are so positive,” Diss says. “That really stuck with me.

I knew I wanted to go to school there, and, luckily, it all worked out.”

Diss will cheer for the Hilltoppers’ football and basketball seasons this year and participate in campus and community events.

In addition, Diss hopes to be one of the 24 girls chosen for WKU’s national competition squad.

“I would really like to develop my stunting skills,” Diss says. “I’m always going to work hard. My skills were good enough to make the team, but you can never stop improving.”

The seven-week training program, which is open to children ages 8 and up, will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Athletes may attend fullor half-day sessions. Registration for the program is ongoing.

McPherson had 40 children registered as of press time Tuesday and planned to cap the program at 150 participants.

The program consists of strength training, mental conditioning, speed and agility, yoga and Pilates, nutrition, guest speakers and more. The program is designed for all sports and ath-

McPherson came up with the idea last fall after meeting Lakewood Ranch High quarterback Nate Strawderman at a football game. Strawderman asked McPherson if they could throw together sometime.

The two began throwing together on a routine basis, and, two months later, McPherson was working with about 20 kids. At that point, McPherson thought about the possibility of making a career out of training children.

“This is home,” McPherson says. “I’ve walked the same path. I want to be able to walk

How many times have you been to camp?

This is my first time. I heard it was fun from my mom and stepdad, and it is fun.

What have been your favorite parts of camp so far?

Today and yesterday. Yesterday (June 12), we were at the park. Today, we went to Chuck E. Cheese. And we’re going to Legoland, but that’s not until later.

What have you learned in camp?

We made robots. First, we had a box, and we had another box and another box. Then, they were done. And the judges came and gave first place to another robot — not mine.

Have you made friends so far?

Yeah. Oh, but I forgot her name. Wait, her name is Kendal, I think.

Kiddie Academy children play at Camp Adventure Children seeking adventure are touring East County and Tampa Bay for the next two months.

Kiddie Academy at Lakewood Ranch’s Camp Adventure, held June 10 through Aug. 16, offers students in kindergarten through fifth-grade opportunities to enjoy 35 field trips to area attractions, such as the Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI) and Legoland.

The camp features technology, sports, cooking, performance and

LEGO-themed weeks. Every two weeks, the campers focus on a new topic.

On June 12, 25 students snacked on popcorn and watched “James and the Giant Peach,” before heading to Summerfield Park, in Lakewood Ranch.

There, competition ensued as students chased one another on the basketball court while Kiddie Academy camp leaders acted as referees.

Other children blew bubbles, and some, with beads of sweat dripping

down their foreheads, scaled the park’s playground and raced down the slide.

Students also craft projects to accompany each theme. Thus far, campers have crafted robots and gifts for Father’s Day. “This camp is great for creating good relationships and for them to see some kids they may not see over the summer normally,” said Sara Wagner, a teacher at Kiddie Academy’s after-school program.
