Following negotiations with the school’s board of directors, Sarasota Military Academy CEO Dan Kennedy will take leave from his post beginning July 1.

The move comes after months of difficulty transi-

tioning to new leadership at the school, board members said. Board Vice Chairman Herb Jones, who negotiated the agreement with Kennedy, said the group has been discussing a succession plan with Kennedy for two years

now.

In January, the board moved Kennedy from headmaster of Sarasota Military Academy to CEO of the high school and the forthcoming SMA Prep middle school.

At that time, it also selected

Christina Bowman as the new head of school.

Organizations seek guidance for Sarasota bayfront plan The groups behind Bayfront 20:20, a master planning process for available bayfront land, attempt to learn how to win support for its efforts.

To develop a vision and master plan for the bayfront land surrounding the Van Wezel, local organizations are looking to the Brooklyn Bridge for guidance.

Those groups are leading an effort, called Sarasota Bayfront 20:20, to create a project that establishes a cultural and economic legacy for the city along the bayfront while also ensuring public access to the area. The group is focusing on a 75-acre swath of land — some city property, some privately owned parcels such as the former Quay property — near the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall.

The effort, led by Visit Sarasota County Board of Directors Chairman Michael Klauber, began earlier this year.

The group, which includes the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce, the Van Wezel Foundation and the Sarasota Orchestra, received a partial blessing from the City Commission earlier this year.

Commissioners praised the effort, but declined to get city staff involved in the process and told the group to proceed slowly with its work.

On June 5, Visit Sarasota County held a public meeting with members of other involved organizations and

a consulting firm the group has contacted for educational purposes. HR&A Advisors is a real estate and economic development consulting group based in New York City. Representatives from Sarasota Bayfront 20:20 met with HR&A in New York last month and brought in two members of HR&A to speak at the June 5 meeting. Klauber said he wanted to learn how other similar public-private park projects came to be.

“Basically, we tried a couple of other avenues (to transition), and it didn’t work on those avenues,” Jones said. “This is the culmination of about six months of trial and error.”

SMA Board Chairman Howard Crowell said the process of transitioning from one leader to another was an intrinsically difficult situation, particularly when both parties remained active. Crowell said there was a tendency for both leaders to think they knew better than the

When the city planned to allow for a residential development along the waterfront near the bridge, a diverse mix of residents and community organizations banded together to oppose the project.

As the group gained political sway and eventually actual authority as the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Organization, it developed a set of 13 principles to guide the future development of the waterfront.

Even though the principles were noncontroversial — representing the overlapping desires of different parties — they became an essential guiding tool as the park began to move from theory to reality.

Damon said it was essential for Sarasota Bayfront 20:20 to define its mission and develop a similar set of vision-guiding principles. Without the principles, Damon said, the Brooklyn Bridge Park would have never come to fruition.

“You always go back to the 13 principles,” Damon said. “Love it or like it, you can always say, ‘This is consistent with the principles,’ or ‘this isn’t.’”

other, and that it was important to clearly define who was guiding the school.

“Two leaders is an impossible situation — you have to have one,” Crowell said. “You have to transition from one to another, and that’s what this is really all about.”

Kennedy co-founded Sarasota Military Academy alongside Burt Bershon in 2002.

Before leaving to start the charter school, Kennedy also served as principal of Sarasota High School. SMA board members said they appreciated the considerable work Kennedy put into making the school a success, and that his transition to an inactive employee was important for preserving the school’s — and Kennedy’s — legacy.

“This is not a punitive situation,” board member Carter Donavan said. “The roles are changing; life is changing. Dan created a wonderful school. Sometimes you need to protect that — that’s what this is doing.”

As part of the agreement, Kennedy will use the rest of June to prepare for his leave.

Beginning July 1, Kennedy will receive 18 weeks of paid vacation and take 26 weeks of leave as an inactive employee. On Nov. 30, Kennedy will meet with the board, at which time the two parties will discuss his future role at Sarasota Military Academy. Jones said that Kennedy indicated he might opt for full-time retirement, instead.

would be revitalized after taking time to relax and reflect away from the school.

“I think the future of what he’ll be able to do when he comes back, I think that looks pretty bright,” Jones said.

Woody Wolverton was the only board member who did not vote in favor of the agreement with Kennedy, choosing instead to abstain. Wolverton stressed the importance of Kennedy in the school’s history.

“I think we all feel the same way about Dan and appreciate what he’s done,” Wolverton said. “I hope that this satisfies him, and on the other hand I hope he can be a part of this organization.”

The group repeatedly mentioned that winning commission buy-in — and, in the future, the commitment of public funds to develop infrastructure on the land — would be one of its toughest battles. Damon said the group should spend the next six months working on clearly defining its goals and gaining more support from citizens. After it has done that, she suggested the group find a way to publicizes its achievements throughout the community.

“You can have some sort of programming, sponsored by this new organization, that shows it’s capable of bringing all of the districts along,” Damon said.

Klauber is scheduled to update the City Commission next month on Sarasota Bayfront 20:20’s work. Right now, he’s just hoping to receive acknowledgement that the group is still on the right path and perhaps a more whole-hearted commitment from the City Commission. From there, he’ll try to create a project that is satisfying to all involved parties.

“Not everybody is going to get everything they want in something like this, but if everyone is willing to work together, we can all win,” Klauber said.

City, residents discuss density for proposed Rosemary overlay The Rosemary Residential Overlay District allows for higher-density projects, designed to help inject the neighborhood with much-needed residential life.

City staff believes the Rosemary Residential Overlay District, the boundaries of which are detailed below, could help area businesses thrive and fill vacant land within the neighborhood.

A proposal that would allow higher-density housing projects in the Rosemary District still has to make its way through city and state approval processes. In the meantime, residents and staff have offered their insight on the potential pros and cons of the plan.

At Saturday’s Coalition of City Neighborhood Associations meeting, city staff presented an overview of the proposed Rosemary Residential Overlay District, or R-ROD. The R-ROD would allow for housing projects with a density of 75 units per acre within the Rosemary District — three times greater than the current cap of 25 units per acre.

Developments within the R-ROD would still have to comply with many of the current regulations. Projects would still go through the city’s administrative approval process, and buildings would still have a height restriction of five stories. The overall density in the Rosemary District would also remain unchanged — though the larger projects would be allowed, the entire area would have to maintain an average density of 25 housing units per acre.

Ryan Chapdelain, a chief planner with the city, said the increased density provided benefits for a neighborhood in need of redevelopment. He said the current landuse designation in the Rosemary District called for roughly a 50-50 split between residential and other uses. As it stood, Chapdelain said, only about 25% of the Rosemary District is made up of residential units.

Chapdelain said an increased population in the Rosemary District would help combat problems stemming from crime and homelessness, while also allowing for businesses to succeed.

“Having more residents in Rosemary gives you more natural surveillance, more activity,” Chapdelain said. “Businesses begin to thrive, and overall, it’s good for the district.”

Karin Murphy, director of the city’s Urban Design Studio, approves of the inspiration behind the R-ROD, but said the overlay district may not be a long-term solution. A private developer, Rosalyne Holdings LLC, proposed the R-ROD and plans to develop about 450 apartments on 6.2 acres along Cocoanut Avenue. Murphy said Rosalyne Holdings’ project was in keeping with the New Urbanist principles that will guide the city’s forthcoming formbased code and the city should move to get it in place.

crease for the Rosemary District. Other projects may not offer desirable housing types or have the ability to link up with public transit. The R-ROD, if approved, would sunset after four years.

Under a form-based code, Murphy said she hopes to have an incentive-based system to allow specific projects to have density increases. Within the R-ROD, however, property owners could sit on the land — made more valuable by the new density rules — with no intention of developing it themselves.

“We are concerned it will have a speculative effect, driving the property values up and possibly leaving some missing teeth,” Murphy said. “We’d like to get a really nice project incorporated, but we’re being very thoughtful about what that long-term effect might be.”

Residents at Saturday’s meeting asked whether property owners might be adversely affected by the cap created by the 25-units-per-acre average. Chapdelain said it was unlikely that the area would

develop that quickly, due to the number of non-residential properties in the area.

Even if there were a development boom, the city is required to intervene before that cap is hit. If Rosemary District reached 85% of its housing maximum, a provision in the proposal would require the City Commission to meet and potentially amend the R-ROD. As a result, Chapdelain said, the R-ROD wouldn’t create a rush to build high-density developments before it’s too late.

“It’s not really a first-come, first-serve basis,” Chapdelain said. “Nobody’s density is going to be taken from them.”

Several residents at Saturday’s meeting said that, even with high-density developments in the Rosemary District, it would be difficult to link the neighborhood to the downtown core. They asked staff to look at ways to make Fruitville Road easier for pedestrians to cross, so that the entire city might benefit from the improvements to the Rosemary District.

Chapdelain said the city plans to issue a request for proposals in the fall to evaluate the stretch of Fruitville between U.S. 41 and U.S. 301. He said Tax Increment Financing funds might be available to change the configuration of the road or create pedestrian sleeves across Fruitville.

He agreed that, if the neighborhood is to succeed, it was important to link it to the rest of the city.

“That may be critical to the success of the Rosemary, having that connection to the heart of downtown,” Chapdelain said.

“That will be something we’re working on.”

NEWSBRIEFS + Gov. Scott fills School Board vacancy A candidate for the Sarasota County School Board District 1 seat has taken the position months before the August election.

On Friday, Gov. Rick Scott appointed insurance agent Bridget Ziegler to the seat vacated by Carol Todd, who resigned in April. Ziegler, who was File photo already running in the race to replace Todd, will Ziegler serve the rest of Todd’s term, which expires Nov. 11.

Scott’s appointment comes despite current school board members pushing for the position to remain vacant until the Aug. 26 election. Several school board members expressed a fear that appointing a candidate to fill the vacancy could offer an unfair advantage in the election.

“We’ve taken the position that we’d like to not have (a replacement),” school board member Shirley Brown said in April.

The other candidates for the District 1 seat are Ken Marsh, former Sarasota County School District director of longrange planning, Paul Schafer, a retired St. Bonaventure University professor, and Geoffrey Griswold Fisher, who formerly served on the West Hartford, Conn., school board.

+ Sarasota Ballet dancer killed in bike accident Sarasota Ballet Corps de Ballet member Pedro Pupa was killed in a bike accident the afternoon of June 4, near FSU Center for the Performing Arts.

Pupa was leaving ballet rehearsal on his bicycle at approximately 2:45 p.m. when a small delivery box truck struck him in the 5400 block of Bay Shore Road.

Pupa died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident, according to the Sarasota Police Barbara Banks Department.

Sarasota Police Department detectives have arrested Sarasota resident Shaquan Leverett for the murder of a Palmetto man in March.

Leverett, 19, was charged with the murder of Carlton Parhm, 23. Police had been investigating the killing since March 10, when they received a report of a dead body on the side of the road in the 3200 block of Orange Avenue. Officers identified the body as Parhm, who had died from a gunshot wound.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Parhm and four friends left an apartment complex after getting into a dispute with Leverett and others. As the car drove southbound on Leon Avenue, a gunshot shattered the front passenger window and struck Parhm. Witnesses identified Leverett as being at the scene of the earlier conflict.

DID undecided on expansion, improvements The city’s Downtown Improvement District weighs a potential expansion as it contemplates its role in downtown improvements and how it could pay for them.

The Downtown Improvement District continues to ponder the expansion of its boundaries while eyeing future projects such as street improvements, circulator vehicles and parking subsidization.

Last year, the DID funded a $1.9 million improvement project along Main Street from Gulfstream Avenue to Goodrich Avenue. The improvements were part of a larger Main Street master plan, extending to U.S. 301, which the group developed beginning in 2010. The proposed improvements remaining in the master plan include brick intersections, additional landscaping and new parallel parking spaces.

Although that eastern segment of Main Street sits outside of the DID’s boundaries, Chairman Ernie Ritz called for the group to improve the area at a meeting Tuesday.

“We need to complete what we started on Main Street,” Ritz said.

Ritz said he’s gotten feedback from people regarding the noticeable difference between the segment of Main Street that the group improved and the eastern portion it did not. Because DID members approved the initial improvement efforts, he felt they owed it to neighboring merchants to finish the work. He said the group should also solicit input to reconsider adjusting the design plans, potentially using some funds to improve more heavily used portions of Ringling Boulevard.

To pay for the project, the group would have to expand its boundaries. The DID, which generates revenue by imposing a 2-mill tax on commercial property owners within the district, could generate roughly $282,000 in additional funds by expanding to U.S. 301, based on 2013 property values.

To pay for the initial Main Street improvements, the group took out a 20-year bond that tied up much of its revenues going forward, leaving it unable to tackle larger projects. If the DID were to expand, several members said it should keep its resources more liquid.

“If we expanded the DID and did things within our means, I'm more than happy,” DID member Ron Soto said. “If we’re floating a bond again, we'll be right back where we are now.”

current boundaries of the district. He said the group should focus on things such as improving the sidewalks between Five Points and Orange Avenue, which was also left out of the initial improvements.

“I don't think we're done here yet,” Mannausa said.

Community Redevelopment Area, would bring in approximately $1.3 million in additional annual revenues. Moran said a larger expansion would allow the group to consider funding a pet project: a downtown circulator vehicle and an exterior transit option, which would link downtown to attractions such as the beaches and St. Armands Circle.

City Manager Tom Barwin spoke to the DID Tuesday regarding paid parking downtown. As the city works on developing a parking strategic plan, the DID has come out against the near-term reimplementation of paid parking downtown, fearing a loss of business. Barwin said that, with the State Street Garage in development, the cost to manage the city’s parking system next year is projected at $750,000.

Barwin suggested parking management expenses could be incorporated into the cost of running a business in the area. By expanding the DID to the boundaries of the CRA, Barwin suggested some of the additional revenue could go to the city to keep parking free for customers.

Barwin said the downtown area benefits from access to on-street spaces, as well as three city parking garages. If the DID believes free parking is integral to the success of downtown, he said the expansion could lead to an option that satisfied all sides.

“Those parking costs could be covered easily by the DID,” Barwin said.

City readies special events ordinance Next month, the City Commission is scheduled to consider an ordinance that would regulate special events in St. Armands Circle Park. Already, it’s drawn a mixed reception.

As the city of Sarasota finalizes a proposed special events ordinance for public hearing, the first draft has inspired an array of reactions from St. Armands stakeholders.

Part of the proposed ordinance focuses specifically on managing events at St. Armands Circle Park.

People around the Circle have pushed for a blackout period in the park during the height of tourist season, which would reinstitute a policy that the city observed until 2009. Under the ordinance, no special events would be held in the park from February through April.

The city instituted a similar temporary blackout period during the 2014 season, when it placed a moratorium on events from February to April 20. Landowners, merchants and residents on St. Armands pushed for the restriction; they argued the in-season events distracted from local businesses and added to traffic and parking congestion issues.

City staff presented an initial draft of the ordinance for the City Commission’s consideration at a June 2 meeting. In addition to the blackout period, the ordinance places a limit of two events per month in the park and doesn’t allow for any events that would close lanes of traffic around the Circle.

Corrigan said she was optimistic about getting favorable regulations in place for events at St. Armands Circle Park. mands Residents Association was positive. City staff said they received a letter from residents association President Hugh Fiore expressing the group’s pleasure with the new regulations. Residents association member Kevin Bales said special events and street closures often reroute overflow traffic and parking into the neighborhoods, and it was important to attempt to mitigate that.

“We’re encouraged about its emphasis on public safety,” Bales said. “The moratorium period and the limit of two events per

month we’re happy with, to keep disruption to our streets at an acceptable level.”

Diana Corrigan, executive director of the St. Armands Circle Association, was less pleased with the proposed ordinance.

The St. Armands Circle Association, which represents area merchants, yearned for an earlier system in which Circle stakeholders had considerable sway over what happened — and didn’t happen — in the park.

Prior to 2009, the St. Armands Landowners, Merchants and Resi-

dents group had significant input on events that were exempt from the blackout period and allowed to be held from February to April.

“All we really wanted was to go back to what we had, and it’s obvious that’s not going to happen,” Corrigan said.

City Attorney Robert Fournier has said that a private organization cannot have autonomy over the management of a public park.

Still, Corrigan said she hoped the history of the Circle would be taken into consideration when the ordinance goes before the City

Commission again. In particular, the limit of two events per month would interfere with the Circle association, which holds three events per month in October and January.

Corrigan said those additional events, which include the Classic Antique Car Show, were originally held during the proposed blackout period. She said she wanted the commission to acknowledge that, despite the proposed monthly limit, certain events were important to people in the area.

“They’re going to have to treat this fairly with events that have been in the community for a long time,” Corrigan said. “Those should be given some special consideration as compared to the new ones that are coming into the area from out of town.”

Fournier said the length of the blackout period and the number of events allowed per month were questions of policy that the City Commission would decide.

He said the city attorney’s office would prepare multiple options in advance of the public hearing regarding the ordinance, which is slated to occur during the July 21 commission meeting.

Despite her initial issues with the proposed regulations, Corrigan said she was hopeful an acceptable ordinance would be in place by next season.

“I really think (the city) wants to work with us,” Corrigan said. “I think they want to make it a winwin for everybody.”

Long may it wave Surely, we’re not alone in thinking that we, as Americans, are having our American ideals and patriotism tested to new limits lately.

And now this one: the Bergdahl for Taliban terrorists, which occurred in front of the backdrop of the 70th anniversary of D-Day. Talk about mixed messages.

There are the older generations who lived through WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the Cold War and who understand the threat of authoritarian communism versus liberty.

And then there is the 9/11 generation, after which thousands and thousands of young men and women responded to the call of volunteering to defend their country against Islamic terrorism.

But over these past six years, if you are a newcomer to Americanism, it would be difficult to say what America stands for in the world.

That’s all the more reason to emphasize such occasions as our nation’s role in D-Day; honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice on Memorial Day; or celebrating on July 4 the birth of what, until recent years, has been the freest place on earth.

It’s all the more reason to have organizations like the Military Officers Association of Sarasota doing what they are doing: teaching students (and adults) about the origin, history and meaning of the

American flag and the proper etiquette and respect it deserves.

Since October 2013, the Military Officers Association — with help from local Veterans of Foreign Wars posts, Sons of the American Revolution, the Vietnam Brotherhood and American Legion posts — has introduced into 10 Sarasota County public elementary schools a 10-lesson course on the flag for fourth- and fifth-graders.

Tom Piazze, first vice president of the Military Officers Association of Sarasota, says the course has received enthusiastic response from students and teachers alike and is optimistic it will spread to all of the county’s 27 public elementary schools.

We need efforts like this for our youth.

They need to be taught and reminded again and again the values and symbols that made America a role model for the world.

They need to know how and why we wave the flag — not just on Flag Day (this Saturday, June 14), but every day.

+ The Circle’s bigger challenge

As the tussle continues at Sarasota City Hall over when and how many events can and should be allowed in St. Armands Circle Park, the myth comes to mind of emperor Nero playing the fiddle while 70% of Rome was ablaze.

While Rome burned, Nero focused on the wrong thing. While St. Armands Circle constituencies argue over event dates, Uni-

versity Town Center and the rowing park out east are on the verge of creating a huge sucking sound — that of hundreds of thousands of consumer dollars away from the Circle and the city of Sarasota’s tax coffers.

This brings to mind the salient comments recently of Eric Seace, co-owner of Dream Weaver and past president of the St. Armands Circle Association board.

In his remarks as outgoing president last month, Seace in effect told the association’s members and city commissioners present to wake up. “We need a parking structure,” Seace said. “Landowners must recruit highquality retailers. [But] the better retailers won’t open here because of the parking.”

What’s more, Seace advocated that St. Armands Circle Park be privatized — leased to a private group to control as it sees fit.

Seace’s comments were on target. He was saying St. Armands Circle businesses, landowners and the city need to quit doing the same thing over and over again — and jump to action.

In that vein, St. Armands leaders and city officials might consider stepping out of the fire and viewing the bigger picture. Here are the challenges: how to keep visitors and shoppers coming to the Circle; and how best to use St. Armands Circle Park and the beach to fulfill that objective. This is a serious business challenge, and it requires a well-crafted strategy and execution, not arguments over event dates.

HOW TO FOLD A FLAG

Flag Day is believed to have originated in 1885, when a Fredonia, Wis., schoolteacher, B.J. Cigrand, arranged for the students in that district to observe June 14 as “Flag Birthday.” That was on the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes as the nation’s flag.

But it wasn’t until Aug. 3, 1949, that President Harry S Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14 of each year as National Flag Day.

Repeat, fold in half lengthwise again, being careful that the blue field is on the outside.

THE SYMBOLS OF ITS DESIGN

The flag consists of 13 horizontal stripes — representing the original 13 colonies; the stars represent the 50 states. Red symbolizes hardiness and valor; white symbolizes purity and innocence and blue symbolizes vigilance, perseverance and justice.

PROPER TIME TO DISPLAY

As one person holds the flag by the blue field, another makes a triangular fold in the opposite and continues to make triangular folds until the entire flag is in a triangle.

Display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. The flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.

FLYING HALF-STAFF

Unless specified by a governor or president, the only day a flag officially is flown at half-staff is Memorial Day, and then only until noon.

HOW TO DISPLAY IN A PARADE

The flag should not be displayed on a float in a parade except from a staff. The flag should not be draped over the hood, top, sides or back of a vehicle or a boat. When the flag is displayed on a motorcar, the staff should be fixed firmly to the chassis or clamped to the right fender.

Dear Editor: Tom Smith in a May 15 letter talks about Benghazi from the point of view of his experience of being in combat and his expectations from his time as a Marine in Vietnam. He says, “There is a sacred trust that if you get in trouble, I will come to help you. If I’m in trouble, you’ll come to help me.”

This is undoubtedly true for the uniformed services in a war zone 1) during a time of war where 2) our military presence is well established and equipped and 3) contingency plans are in place.

Benghazi was not a military facility, it was a consulate. The U.S. was not engaged in a war in or with Libya. We had no significant military presence nearby.

It is unclear that we had any contingency plans to confront an uprising.

I have seen no indication that there was any military plan on how to deal with such a (potential) non-military problem, a war room prepared to manage it or detailed and current intelligence of the situation on the ground.

To send personnel into such an unknown situation in support of an unspecified goal for an unconsidered duration would have been dereliction of

commanders’ duties to safeguard their troops.

As former Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said in May 2013: “I listened to the testimony of both Secretary Panetta and Gen. Dempsey. And, frankly, had I been in the job at the time, I think my decisions would have been just as theirs were.

We don’t have a ready force standing by in the Middle East, despite all the turmoil that’s going on, with planes on strip alert, troops ready to deploy at a moment’s notice. And so getting somebody there in a timely way would have been very difficult, if not impossible … Well, given the number of surface-to-airmissiles that have disappeared from Gaddafi’s arsenals, I would not have approved sending an aircraft, a single aircraft over Benghazi under those circumstances.”

What immediately caught my attention in the article was news that county staff is working on the project. On May 16, your paper reported that Sarasota County officials announced at a workshop that they would like to relocate the county’s Central Energy Plant for the same surface parking lot proposed for the bus station. Why are county officials working at cross purposes for the use of this lot?

I am not opposed to moving the downtown bus station if it makes economic sense.

But it makes no sense to spend millions of dollars to move the station to another part of downtown with achieving better services while, at the same time, endangering children who use the nearby park, congesting the roadways around the courthouse and damaging the prospects for redevelopment of other properties in the area.

I would like to see some alternative sites considered if the county is going to continue to devote resources to the issue.

It was a long process, but the restrictions are now in place. Parking is not permitted at all in the entire first block of the street, including the right of way, from the corner of Canal/ Mayo to the corner of Cortez/ Mayo. Parking is then permitted for 500 feet on alternating sides of the road the rest of the way down.

The issue is the placement of the no parking signs.

If you are driving down the first block of the street from the corner of Canal/Mayo, the first two signs are not placed head on. They are placed so you have to turn your head to the right to see them.

This is causing a lot of confusion. The signs are simply not visible when driving.

There also needs to be an additional sign in that first block because of the curve in the street.

I have spoken with officers from the Sheriff’s Department, and they too agreed the signs are confusing so they hesitate to write citations.

The issue is easily correctable.

I hope the county will consider repositioning the signs.

For Sarasota Middle School teachers and administration, STEMsmart award reflects everyday student engagement.

Now, there are so many more stimulating things for students to be engaged with.”

Teachers at Sarasota Middle School say that the incorporation of this type of in-classroom technology has shifted learning from the traditional teacher-centric model of education to a more student-driven one.

Since incorporating STEM into its curriculum three years ago, Sarasota Middle School has taken full advantage of the advances in technology. Science teacher Jason Sharrock, Principal Karen Rose and math teacher Donna Winstead all enjoy new opportunities to engage students.

“The teacher has become more of a facilitator,” says math teacher Donna Winstead. “I find myself letting my students do more thinking and letting them struggle to find the answer on their own, which can be hard as a teacher. But it really promotes critical thinking, and it gives them an opportunity early on to see

these fields and see that they can be successful in them.”

For Principal Karen Rose, the STEMsmart School of the Year award is a testament to the environment her students and teachers have created.

“It’s a reflection of what I have the privilege of seeing every day,” she says. “Which is engaged students — happy students — experiencing things they would in these career fields.”

The employee said a man placed eight cases of beer in a shopping cart and left without paying. The man was walking toward a car in which another male was waiting, at which point the employee confronted the man and asked for the beer back. The man placed his hand in his pocket and said, “What, you want some?” The employee returned to the store to avoid confrontation. ported an unknown subject took four pairs of sunglasses, totaling $1,339.95.

First Step Sarasota honors longtime anonymous donor Paul Welch hopes to set a good example for his children in giving back to charities.

Upon meeting him, you’d never know Paul Welch has been a secret Santa for families of First Step Sarasota. However, for the past three decades the humble Bird Key resident has been giving back to his community without any hesitation.

For the last 15 years, Welch has been anonymously funding presents for First Step’s Secret Santa program, which he began with board member Lynne Ross. Every year, First Step clients’ holiday wish lists are collected and, with Welch’s financial support, are granted.

“I never really gave it any thought,” he says of his community service. “I’m so happy that I can do it.”

Welch has been donating to charities for more than 40 years. He began giving back in the ’70s in his hometown of Detroit through Spaulding for Children, a national adoption agency for handicapped children.

In Sarasota, Welch makes donations through his foundation, the Welch Family Foundation. The foundation donates to community organizations such as the YMCA Teen Theatre and the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe.

“I came from nothing and I’ve been very blessed,” he says. “I just want to give back wherever I go.”

Welch started the foundation in 2004 to help his family carry on his efforts. The father of five says the foundation is a platform for his children to see firsthand what a difference one person can make.

“It’s to let the kids know how much the foundation is capable of,” he says, “and to

let them know what they can do.”

Although Welch has donated to First Step and other Sarasota charities for three decades, he has never been a fan of recognition. He says leading by example for his children and helping them see what is possible, as well as helping families, is his reward.

In 2012, when Welch heard First Step was planning to renovate its campus, the entrepreneur knew he wanted to help.

“No one was biting, so I thought I would help out,” he says.

Through his foundation, Welch donated $100,000 to support the new addition to First Step. The addition, named the Welch Family Foundation Community Room in honor of its benefactor, is the center’s multipurpose room used for meetings, meals and group activities. Asked how he feels of the recognition, Welch redirects the attention to the community.

“I’m so happy I can do it,” he says, “but there is so much more work to do.”

Patricia D’Arcy Laughlin is a born storyteller. Normally, the Trinidadian shares stories of exotic travels and life experiences, however, recently she has been telling a new story, one of love and power.

The 700-page novel “Sacrifice for a Kingdom” is a love story that also tackles unromantic topics such as history, equality and religion.

“I want the book to be entertaining, fun and contribute something of substance,” she says.

Laughlin grew up in Port de Spain, Trinidad, before she moved to England at 14 years old to attend boarding school. She returned home after finishing high school and planned to study fine art in London until she met her future husband, Peter, and fell in love.

Laughlin stayed in Trinidad, where she wrote poetry and painted.

In 1979, she and her family moved to Miami. Ten years later, they moved again — this time to Sarasota.

Laughlin writes in her office, a room flooded by natural light and filled with books on ancient civilizations and religion and dictionaries in multiple languages.

Laughlin says although the book took three years to write, the story is 40 years in the making.

Laughlin first put pen to paper in the late ’70s while at a spa retreat with her mother.

With no access to a computer, Laughlin penned the first 10 pages by hand and didn’t revisit her work until 2010, when she had time.

oine, Elizabeth, and Prince Michael: two aristocrats who fall in love and find themselves in the middle of a power struggle of politics and religion. The book is both erotic and philosophic.

“I’m tackling a controversial issue with a love story,” Laughlin says of her unusual approach.

The love story was Laughlin’s favorite part to write. The hardest, Laughlin says, was Elizabeth’s speech challenging male authority in religion.

Laughlin says she’s glad she never shied away from telling the story she finds so important.

“I’m actually a private person, but as you get older you realize you don’t have to worry about what people think,” she says.

An avid runner, Murphy has learned to train her body to not only record miles but also to build up endurance. But that doesn’t mean the Sarasota resident still isn’t seeking to get something in the end.

For Murphy, there’s no better reward after a challenging workout than a cold glass of chocolate milk. It may seem odd to some, but the combination of protein and carbohydrates has proven to be the perfect fuel to rebuild her body.

Now, Murphy, who works part-time doing communications for New Balance in Sarasota and is also a certified Road Runners of America coach, is sharing her experiences with others as a representative for Team CHOCOLATE MILK. Murphy was one of eight people nationwide to join a group of national ambassadors who drink chocolate milk to refuel following a strenuous workout.

Murphy first began drinking chocolate milk following her workouts about a year ago after a friend mentioned it to her.

“It’s weird, but I like chocolate milk,” Murphy says. “It’s not fancy. You don’t have to order it or go to a special store to get it. I wanted to find something that I would always be able to find.”

Earlier this spring, Murphy learned about Team CHOCOLATE MILK from a couple of friends who also are representatives. Murphy applied to be an ambassador by submitting a 60-second video explaining how her postworkout routine is built around chocolate milk.

After all of the submissions were compiled, the top 25 were selected and posted on the Team CHOCOLATE MILK website for a twoweek voting process. The top-eight submissions were awarded the full sponsorship, which includes $500 in sponsorship money, team training and race gear, free entries to Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon, IRONMAN, Iron Girl and Lifetime Fitness’ Esprit de She races and other training perks.

“I was really surprised and excited,” Murphy says. “I continue to inspire myself. This is something I like to do. It’s super fun. I only talk about stuff that I like, so that’s what was appealing for me.”

Initially a self-described “non-athlete,” Murphy started running in summer 2010 as a means of exercise. Murphy was working for Walt Disney World at the time and often found herself getting tired after a long day.

Murphy had tried a variety of sports growing up, but she realized almost as soon as she began them that none was for her. After some thought, Murphy decided running would be the easiest way to get active. After all, all she had to do was lace up a pair of running shoes and get going.

How hard could it be?

To start, Murphy downloaded a Couch to 5K app on her phone. Her first workout combined both running and walking. Her first running segment was 30 seconds. She barely made it.

But, little by little, Murphy got the hang of it, and with each workout she became more and more comfortable with her newfound routine.

“I have two left feet, but somehow I get them to both move forward (together),” a laughing Murphy says. “I have enthusiasm, but I don’t have hand-eye coordination. Running is good for me. Running is simple. It’s not easy, but you can just get up and go.”

Murphy completed her first 5K — the Moss Park Forest Run — later that summer, setting a goal of 30 minutes. She completed the race in 27 minutes. She could’ve stopped there. But Murphy had already caught the running bug.

“It was a weird turning point,” Murphy says.

“I knew there was more, but I didn’t know what would happen next.”

Although there was one thing Murphy was sure of — she had no intention of running a 10K. Or so she thought.

Sarasota resident Krissy Murphy began running in 2010 as a way to stay active. Now she’s in the middle of training for her 10th marathon with the hopes of qualifying for the Boston Marathon.

That fall, Murphy and her husband, Eric, moved to northern Virginia. Shortly thereafter, Murphy signed up for a 10K. At the time, Murphy had only run as far as 5 miles. But she slowly increased her distance.

With her first 10K complete, Murphy signed up for the Disneyland Half Marathon over Labor Day weekend 2011. With nearly a year to train, Murphy was up for the challenge. But, before long, friends and followers on her blog began to question why she was waiting so long.

It was during those discussions that someone told Murphy about the runDisney Coast to Coast Race Challenge; athletes who run both the Disney World and Disneyland half-marathons in a single year receive a special medal.

Not one to pass up a medal, Murphy signed up for the Disney World Half Marathon scheduled for that January, which gave her roughly three months to train.

Murphy began training three days a week in preparation. Murphy, who became sick the week before the race, didn’t have a goal other than to just keep running.

Murphy finished the race in 2 hours, 4 minutes.

“I was so worried I was going to get swept that I kept running,” Murphy says. “It came out of nowhere. I just knew that I wouldn’t want to do what I just did twice. Although a lot of times I think when you cross the finish line, you think the opposite of what really happens.”

After dropping her half-marathon time down to 1:48, Murphy decided to train for a mara-

thon. Murphy completed her first marathon in November 2011 in 3:59.

“For me, running more is good for me,” Murphy says.

BOSTON HOPEFUL

Murphy has completed nine marathons to date. This past week she began training for the Chicago Marathon in October.

Murphy will train six days a week for 18 weeks in preparation for the race; she will run up to 16 miles in a single workout. Murphy is familiar with the regimen, having done the same program in the past.

But she hopes this marathon will be different. Murphy is hoping to use the Chicago Marathon to qualify for the Boston Marathon.

Murphy needs to post a faster time than the qualifying time of 3:35. Her personal-best time is 3:43, which she’s posted twice. Murphy attempted to qualify for Boston in December during the Space Coast Marathon, but was eight seconds off the mark.

“I’m just trying to be laidback about it, and hopefully I’ll perform better,” Murphy says.

“I’m going to wear a watch, but I’m going to try not to pay attention to it. I just need to train at the pace I need to run and not freak out about it.”

Ursula Jones is mad for mahjong. The petite redhead has been playing for more than three decades and is just as passionate as the day she learned to play.

Neighborhood: Jones fell in love with Bay Ridge the game instantly.

Your neighbor “I thought I had died since: 1989 and gone to heaven,” she says.

The Swiss native learned to play mahjong from a relative in 1979. Since then, Jones has never grown tired of the fastpaced game, which is played with a set of 152 tiles based on Chinese symbols and characters.

“It’s fast, fun and cool,” she says, while sitting at her kitchen table with the colorful tiles in front of her.

Jones is originally from Bubendorf, Switzerland. During the ’80s, Jones and her family moved back and forth between

Switzerland and the U.S. before settling in 1989 in Sarasota. While overseas, Jones tried organizing mahjong games with friends, however, it never really stuck.

When she moved to Sarasota, Jones began hosting weekly games for her friends.

In 2009, after hosting weekly games for 20 years, Jones inherited a local tournament held once a month. The tournament hosts 10 tables of four, and players from as far as Tampa and Clearwater attend.

Jones, who works in administration and registration for Adult & Community Enrichment at the Sarasota County Technical Institute, hosts the tournaments not for profit but purely for fun.

Although Jones loves to win, she says it’s the company she enjoys the most.

“Mahjong is a game of luck,” she says, “but mostly it’s about being with your friends and having fun.”

Tiger Bay Club meets legislature for annual update at luncheon The Tiger Bay Club held its monthly luncheon June 5, at Michael’s On East. The luncheon included an annual legislative update with a panel of Florida government officials including Sen. Nancy Detert, Rep. Ray Pilon and Rep. Jim Boyd. After the discussion, members participated in a Q and A.

The Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce held its annual poker tournament June 5, at the Sarasota Kennel Club. The event is the chamber’s largest fundraiser of the year; the more than $2,000 raised will go toward the July 4 fireworks.

Bay Island home sells for $3.75 million The following residential real estate transactions took place between May 26 and May 30.

A property with two homes in Bay Island tops all transactions in this week’s real estate. Susan Gross, of Sarasota, sold two homes at 684 Freeling Drive to Seth Katz and Renee MilgromKatz, of Sarasota, for $3.75 million. The first home, built in 1949, has five bedrooms, fiveand-a-half baths, a pool and 6,022 square feet of living area.

The second home, built in 1968, has two bedrooms, two baths and 2,548 square feet of living area. They previously sold for $1,975,000 in 1997.

n April, Boyce Avenue returned from headlining a 25-show European tour with nearly one-third of the dates sold-out. At the end of the tour, the band members did a press junket in New York City with People magazine, Seventeen magazine and a performance on “Good Morning America.”

The Manzano brothers are no strangers to the limelight. They make up the third most-watched band on YouTube with more subscribers than Lady Gaga and Beyonce.

With stats like that, you’d think they’d have some well-deserved air of arrogance or entitlement, like other celebrities. But Alejandro Manzano, Fabian Manzano and Daniel Manzano are humble and recognize where they came from — Sarasota.

// ARTS&ENTERTAINMENT They sit around a table at These Quiet Sounds in Gulf Gate. It’s their side-project apparel-anddesign company and the most likely place to spot at least one of the members when they aren’t on tour.

Since April, they’ve been falling back into a routine. The eldest brother, Daniel, 33, likes to cook locally sourced food for his wife and three little boys (he hopes they’ll be the second generation of Boyce Avenue). Fabian, 29, and his wife operate These Quiet Sounds, but he also likes boxing. And, the youngest, Alejandro, 27, is into movies — particularly film scores.

Music has always been his thing.

Alejandro first learned to play guitar for a variety show at Pine View School. He signed his brothers up to accompany him. In three months, they were able to play “Now & Forever” by Richard Marx .

The guys didn’t start playing as Boyce Avenue until 2005. Fabian and Alejandro were attending University of Florida at the time.

Daniel had graduated from Harvard and was at the University of Florida in a post-graduate program. They started playing shows at bars.

“We got $50 a person and we

were like, ‘yes!’” Daniel says.

All three laugh at the memory of how they got their start. Playing in college bars to drunken audiences until 2 a.m. is exactly the dues-paying non-YouTube sensation bands must go through.

The brothers gained some fans in this traditional sense for two years. But in September 2007, they tried a modern approach.

They hoped to go viral by releasing a cover of Rihanna’s “Umbrella” the day before her Video Music Awards performance. They knew that song would have high search trends.

By early 2008, Boyce Avenue had more than 100,000 views on the video and had garnered a following for their covers. Boyce Avenue had gone viral. The numbers have gradually grown to more than a billion views on their YouTube channel today. It was as much intentional strategy as it was luck.

“In a way, we did skip some steps, but we still had to claw our way up,” Fabian says.

The raw talent was always there, even in those early, shoddy, self-filmed videos with Alejandro sitting in front of a sheet backdrop in his parents’ garage. Now, Boyce Avenue uses a professional production team to film its covers of everything from Bruno Mars to “The Office” theme song.

“Not every (YouTube sensation) pans out in the same way,” Daniel says. “Not everyone with a million subscribers can sell X number of tickets.”

And to get people interested in their original songs, they must intersperse covers of popular music. No one will search for a song they haven’t heard of, so it keeps them building a fan base.

The group already has lots of fans. In 2009, Boyce Avenue booked a show in the Philippines.

The brothers were taken aback to walk into what they describe as a Beatles-esque moment full of screaming girls. It turns out their Filipino fans love YouTube, acoustic music and Spanish influence in music. (The Manzanos are

The three brothers kept proving people wrong. In 2009, the Mercury Lounge, a New York City venue, gave them a Monday night slot and wouldn’t pre-sell tickets.

“They basically set us up to fail because (they thought) no one knew us,” Alejandro says.

Yet even in the freezing winter weather fans lined up around the corner. The group would go on to sell out the Hammersmith Apollo in London in 2012 on the same stage where the artists they frequently cover typically play, such as John Mayer, Kings of Leon and Coldplay.

“We grew up in this quiet, sleepy town, and we’re all introverted, but that doesn’t mean we

aren’t passionate or that we don’t create loud, impactful art that makes a big statement,” Fabian says.

The brothers are content living in Sarasota. It’s where they want to raise their families. Their apparel store is here, as well as their studio and their parents, Roberto and Ileana Manzano.

They stay true to their roots.

It’s not only in the name Boyce Avenue — a tribute to the street on which they lived as children.

The guys brought their parents on their recent European tour.

“I think that (humility) is intrinsically in us,” Alejandro says. “It doesn’t matter how big we get. We could get as big as Coldplay and we will still be the same people.”

“Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe was very grassroots but fun,” says Apphia Campbell of the first year. “It was nice to be a part of something at the beginning — I have more appreciation for it now that I started my own theater group.” and then I just kind of found myself on the same path,” she says.

For the past five years, Campbell has been living in Shanghai and working as a singer-actressproducer-writer. In fact, she selfproduced “Black Is The Color Of My Voice” there and saw a

sold-out (nearly 130-seat house) eight-day run.

Shanghai is full of people from around the world, and a lot of people speak English there.

Campbell has developed a following — she even gets recognized on the street.

Prior to Shanghai, Campbell lived for four years in New York, where, she says, “If you don’t sing, you don’t work.” She was looking for a sense of direction when she got a job teaching arts in Shanghai. The school went out of business after a year. As a

backup plan, she started playing gigs at local bars, restaurants and venues. On the side, she acted and started a small theater company, “Play the Spotlight,” which has produced a few of the productions she has written.

Campbell is happy to return home to share her newest production with the same audience who saw her get her start.

Following this run, she’ll head to the largest arts festival in the world, Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Campbell’s production is one of 3,000-plus shows being produced — hers was one of the few to be spotlighted.

Campbell certainly found the experience she was looking for abroad; she found her voice.

“I feel like my journey is kind of complete,” she says. “It’s kind of interesting because I’m wondering myself, ‘Where I’m going to go next?’ There’s always a new adventure.”

In The

Apphia Campbell’s story mirrors famous jazz singer Nina Simone’s. Neither started out as a singer. Simone wanted to be a concert pianist, and Campbell wanted to be an actress. But singing became a necessary career for both.

Campbell, as a founding member of Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, last performed in Sarasota nearly 10 years ago. She made her return to the theater June 10, when she opened the one-woman show she wrote loosely based on Simone’s life, “Black Is The Color Of My Voice.”

This musical production takes place during the three days Mena Bordeaux, the character Campbell based on Simone, spends in Liberia to cope with the loss of her father. It’s a plot pulled straight from Simone’s life.

Bordeaux’s father dies before they reconcile from a fight they had a year prior. Per a witch doctor’s recommendation, she takes a three-day sabbatical with no smoking, drinking or talking to anyone as a way to heal from the guilt. There’s a handful of popular Simone songs interspersed throughout, such as: “I Put a Spell on You,” “Sea Lion Woman,” and “The Look of Love.”

“I think I connect a little more with her because maybe I see myself in (her story),” Campbell says.

Simone eventually moved abroad to France and Liberia.

Campbell has a similar story.

// ‘Pump Boys and Dinettes’

// Sarasota Music Festival

“Pump Boys and Dinettes” is now serving customers in Sarasota. The odd-sounding franchise is actually a show at Florida Studio Theatre.

The plot? Well, that’s not really on a menu. It’s a revue of original material, not a traditional musical with an overarching storyline. The menu is filled with heaping helpings of good, old-time rock ’n’ roll with a side order of country.

The setting is the Double Cupp Diner and the Pump Boys Garage — an improbable combination of dinette and garage in South Carolina — that serves pies or gasoline, depending on customer demand.

The six hard-working characters include the garage’s co-owners, Jim (Ben Mackel) and L.M. (Randy Glass); their assistants: the taciturn, unsmiling Eddie (Jamie Mohamdein) and self-effacing Jackson (T. Scott Ross); and the two sisters who run the dinette portion of the establishment — Rhetta Cupp (Charlynn Carter) and Prudie Cupp (Sarah Hund). But there’s precious little pie-slinging or grease monkeying going on here. This gas station/dinette is equipped with a full array of musical instruments, including a stand-up bass in an old phone booth. And these characters put them all to work.

This is basically a revue of original Southern-fried songs. As noted, there’s no storyline. But each song has a story to tell — and the stories are all told in character.

Jackson is seemingly possessed by Jerry Lee Lewis when he loses his inhibitions (and bow tie) on the raunchy “Mona.”

Jim, in turn, channels Elvis in “Drinkin’ Shoes.” (He has an eye for the ladies but also mourns his mother, as we discover in the touching ballad, “Mamaw.”) The ladies have an eye for L.M. — especially Prudie — though L.M. seems unnaturally shy for a piano player. His Dolly Parton fixation (as

Fifty years ago I was studying at the Hartt College of Music, and my parents were testing the waters of the Gulf of Mexico here in Sarasota. They felt they’d found paradise when they realized Sarasota had a chamber music festival. In the next couple of years, they recognized some of my high school and conservatory classmates playing chamber music here.

Now, 50 years later, my parents are gone, but the great Sarasota music-making lives on with those classmates of mine, who are now faculty members of the Sarasota Music Festival, and I, sitting in the audience, writing reviews.

On June 7, Larry Rachleff led a lean, keen, brilliant orchestra in a performance of Beethoven’s Second Symphony that wasn’t my father’s (or my) Beethoven Second. For those of us used to romantic Beethoven, Larry this was true classical music: Rachleff transparent, youthful, exuberant, powerful and stylish. Conducting without a score, Rachleff brought out inner voices I hadn’t heard before and, believe me, I know this symphony.

The larghetto from this work served as the “filler” music on WQXR’s “Symphony Hall,” a program I hosted during my shift, five nights a week for more years than I like to mention. The recording we used was thick and lush, romantic and opulent. What we heard tonight was spare and lean. It threw me at first, but then I realized this is Beethoven. Early Beethoven. It’s from the Classical period. It’s not romantic. It’s not Brahms. And Rachleff and his wonderfully talented orchestra, made of supertalented students who were like me and my friends 50 years ago, brought out

The unrequited Prudie pours out her frustration in the torchy “The Best Man.” Jim and Rhetta, meanwhile, are officially an item — although his roving eye leads him astray in pursuit of a, well, catfish, as we discover in the gospel harmonies of “Fisherman’s Prayer.”

(Rhetta sets him straight with “Be Good or Be Gone.”) Both sisters wow the audience with the honky-tonk sass of “Tips” — a more than rhetorical demand to the FST audience. At the end, the cast appropriates a recently repaired Winnebago for a muchneeded “Vacation” in Florida but come back to work in time for “Closing Time.”

What kind of music is this, anyway? Well, as a waitress once said, “We got both kinds — country and Western.” There’s also rockabilly, ballads, blues numbers and Southern rock. No camp, no parody, no patronization, no by-the-numbers rip-offs. The songs are all great — and true to their Southern roots.

The musician/actors do an excellent job. But this is more than a job — and their excellence is more than technical. We’re talking real chemistry and heart. Jason Edwards (who played Jim in the original 2001 FST production) directs with a sure hand and an unfailing sense of fun. It’s good-time music, folks.

Judging by the hooting and hollering, the opening-night audience had a good time.

sounds that reminded me how amazing music can be because, when it’s played well, it’s never stagnant or inert. It has life, new life. And that’s why teaching festivals like the one we have here are so important.

We all learn from them, and they keep us young and vibrant, like the music.

The concert opened with a conductorless reading of Vivaldi’s Concerto Grosso in B minor from “L’estro Armonico.”

Featuring a quartet of violinists — veterans Joseph Silverstein, Ani Kavafian and Alexander Kerr, with Chapman University student Emily Uematsu — and a baroque chamber ensemble, there were a few moments of fizzy pitch but, for the most part, it was a straightforward performance with each of the musicians listening intently to each other for cues and colors.

Ravel’s “Le tombeau de Couperin” with Rachleff (again scoreless) at the helm had a wonderfully brisk feeling with sweeping tempos and lots of forward motion in the opening prelude and well-known and beloved final rigaudon.

After intermission and before the Beethoven one of the students spoke eloquently and succinctly. He told us how exciting it was to work with such famous musicians. He called them, “household names” and said he was bowled over by sharing “an elevator in a hotel with them and talking about Mozart.”

Those household names are the people who, 50 years ago were those kids, gazing adoringly at other household names who’ve since left their marks on chamber and orchestral music as we hear it today.

The Sarasota Music Festival is celebrating an important anniversary this season. It’s thrilling to think that 50 years from today, some of those students who were playing Beethoven’s Second tonight will be the household names teaching yet-to-be-born musicians of the future.

Kayla Lewis and Josh Olsen met through a mutual friend during their sophomore year of college at Elon University, but didn’t start dating until two years later when they reconnected during spring break in Sarasota.

Josh then proposed June 8, 2013, at Disney World’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.

The couple went on their first vacation together to Josh’s family home on Siesta Key after graduating college in June 2012. They visited the Ringling Museum and Cá d’ Zan during that trip and Kayla knew she wanted to marry him at that spot someday. Almost exactly two years later, they were married in the courtyard of the John and

Mable Ringling Museum of Art on May 3.

“I don’t think anything could have made our wedding any more perfect for us,” says Kayla.

“The food, the music, the flowers, the photo booth, the cake … the whole style was elegantly comfortable.”

The food options included all of the couple’s favorite things — a Philly cheese steak station, make your own taco station with a queso fountain, a macaroni and cheese station with lobster mac n’ cheese and mini chicken and waffles were passed as hors d’oeuvres.

Following the wedding, the couple honeymooned in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
