or Les McCurdy, the worst part of moving his business is almost over — though a lot of work remains before he reaches that point. To prepare for next week’s opening of the new location of McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre and Humor Institute, the owner had to wrangle with city regulations and construction issues. There’s still a list of jobs to tackle: painting the building, putting up a sign and installing phones, lights, speakers and monitors. It’s a headache endemic to opening a new business anywhere, but that provides little solace to McCurdy with the June 11 opening day drawing nearer. “Without a doubt, no matter how meticulous you are in your planning, there will be issues,” McCurdy said. “There always are.” And, yet, about a month from now, he’s confident that headache will have been worth it. For McCurdy, the new location offers an opportunity that the old theater on Sarasota’s North Trail did not. “Growth,” McCurdy said. “In one word, growth.” In opening the new theater, located at 1923 Ringling Blvd., McCurdy believes he’s found a new world less than three miles from the previous location. He’s been seeking to move from a strip mall in North Sarasota for nearly two years now, but had been eying potential buildings along Fruitville Road or University

Parkway to better serve the Bradenton population the business draws. Instead, the downtown location presented an opportunity he couldn’t resist. The building, formerly occupied by Shaner’s Pizzeria, has

been vacant since last year. Property owner Mark Kauffman said he’s been trying to recruit McCurdy’s as a tenant for a decade, calling the business an important asset for the entire area. “I think it’s very significant — both for the building and downtown — to have him there,” Kauffman said. “We didn’t want to lose him within the confines of the city.” Based on the feedback from his clientele, McCurdy thinks he’s made the right choice. “People have said, ‘It couldn’t have been a more perfect location,’” McCurdy said. “And it couldn’t have been.”

McCurdy has already teamed up with his neighbors. He’s serving as the president of the recently formed East End Association, which represents businesses near the eastern end of Main Street. Together, they want to establish that side of downtown as a more vibrant entertainment dis-

If the grass in the city’s medians starts to look overgrown in the next few weeks, it may be because it’s forced to maintain its greens without the assistance of its mowing contractor. That contractor, Championship Landscape Maintenance Professionals, notified the city that it intended to terminate its service agreement with the city May 29. This posed a problem for the city — in part, city spokeswoman Jan Thornburg said, because the company didn’t have the contractual authority to do so. On May 19, the city contacted Championship to issue a 30-day notice for the company to address some performance issues. Thornburg said that the city’s Code Compliance Division had seen a lack of service on lots it asked Championship to maintain, and a lack of communication with the mowing company in general. In response, the group notified the city that it was disinterested in continuing its services — a move the city is handling as a breach of contract. “They said, ‘We’re just not going to do it anymore,’” Thornburg said. The letter from Championship President and CEO John Fideli II says the company has been unable to get in contact with the city and unable to get paid in a timely manner. “With that being said, Championship, LLC has been put in a financial struggle,” Fideli wrote. “We cannot

A team of volunteers works tirelessly to make sure the 2014 Modern Pentathlon World Cup Finals run smoothly. More than 400 volunteers will pitch in to assist with the three-day event.

s Karin Weichlein stood before a crowd of volunteers at the USF Culinary Innovation Lab on Lakewood Ranch Main Street, she took a deep breath and smiled. This meeting would be a call for “all hands on deck,” as Weichlein led more than 100 volunteers May 28 through a 12-sheet packet detailing the volunteer sign-in process, proper shoe and dress, attitude, duties and other details — all required to ensure the 2014 Modern Pentathlon World Cup Finals runs perfectly. The event, for which athletes will compete in swimming, fencing, equestrian show jumping, running and shooting, will be held Friday through Sunday, at the Selby Aquatic Center and Sarasota Polo Club, in Sarasota. “This is a new sport for Sarasota/Bradenton and (it has created) a very special bond (for everyone involved),” said Weichlein, who worked on the project full-time for the last few months. “We have so many different people working on this event, and everyone comes to the table with a different skill set. I feel very privileged to be leading this team of volunteers.” Weichlein’s volunteer base of more than 250 people will help with everything from galas for dignitaries, to transporting athletes, to setting up and breaking down tents and tables at the pentathlon. Additionally, each sporting event has a chairperson or two with his or her own team of volunteers, who will assist with that event. For example, shooting chairmen Sarasota Sheriff Tom Knight and Capt. Ron Locke will use students from Sarasota Military Academy to serve as spotters for the shooting portion of the contest. Nicole Chapman, co-chairwoman for running, will tap into the volunteer base she uses to organize triathlons for the Sarasota Storm Tri Club.

Athletes compete in a series of one-touch bouts with epee swords. While fencing contests typically are held inside, spectators will watch pentathlon fencing outside. Each bout lasts about one minute. The first fencer to score a hit wins. If neither fencer scores within a minute, both athletes receive a loss. For the pentathlon, pentathletes will compete in a round-robin style tournament earlier in the morning, facing all other competitors, in an effort to score as many wins as possible. Pentathletes will compete in the fencing finals at the Sarasota Polo Club. There, the lowest-ranked fencers will compete first. The first-place fencer will only have to compete in the final fencing bout to win that contest. A score of 250 equates to 70% bouts won by an athlete.

SWIMMING

Pentathletes are placed in heats according to their personal best times to swim a 200-meter freestyle. Athletes earn 1,000 points for a time of 2:30. Each swimming second is worth about 12 points.

The pressure is on to make it a fantastic event, and there’s a lot of working pieces that you can’t just throw to the wind. People have to know what they are doing and you have to be very on point with your specific role in the committee.” John Amabile, director of communication for USA Pentathlon, agreed. “It’s a great example of getting community resources involved,” he said. Lydia Kolbas, who will serve as site coordinator for the Sarasota Polo Club, where the bulk of pentathlon events and activities will occur, will utilize her experience volunteering at major equestrian events and her planning skills for her role in the pentathlon. “The way people are coming to-

gether for the cause is really unbelievable,” she said. “The strength and the rich resources of people and talent and knowledge they all bring to the table — it’s been fun to see it all come together.” The home of former Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris, who serves on the Local Organizing Committee for the Modern Pentathlon, has transformed into a command center, with volunteers stationed there for meetings, stuffing envelopes or other projects every night. Harris started pulling together a core team of volunteers in February, after the area secured the bid for the finals in January. “When you plan an event like this, there are so many moving parts,” Harris said. “It’s all the stuff you don’t think about. Usually, you get about five years (to plan something like this).” “I can’t tell you how amazing (they have been),” she said. “We need as many people helping as possible. Our goal is for the athletes to be happy the moment their feet touch the ground at Sarasota International Airport.”

RUN

Athletes run 3,200 meters total, nearly 2 miles, stopping to shoot a pistol four times throughout the course. Pentathletes vie for 500 points and start the race based on the combined score from the day’s previous events. Each point equates to a one-second time delay, meaning an athlete with 800 points would start five seconds ahead of an athlete with 805 points.

SHOOT

Approximately every 800 meters, athletes will break from their 3,200-meter run to shoot laser guns at targets located 10 meters away. Athletes must hit the target five times within 50 seconds. The 50-second limit is considered the penalty, if pentathletes do not successfully hit the target within that timeframe.

RIDING (EQUESTRIAN SHOW JUMPING) Athletes

will meet the horses they will ride for the first time about 20 minutes before the show jumping event. The obstacle course is between 350 and 450 meters in length and includes 12 jumps, including one double and one triple jump. Jumps are up to about 4 feet in height. Riders vie for a 300-point total, with points lost for exceeding the time limit, knocking down jumps, incorrectly using the whip and other penalties.

NEWSBRIEFS + Homeless man arrested for assault of merchant The feud between downtown Sarasota merchants and the vagrants frequenting Main Street got physical Saturday evening. Robert Robinson, a 53-year-old homeless man, allegedly threw Vom Fass owner Robert Kay through the storefront’s window during a scuffle before 8 p.m. Saturday. Kay was treated for a 6-inch laceration on his bicep, according to a Sarasota Police Department affidavit. Robinson had been harassing customers and using obscenities in front of the gourmet store. When Kay asked him to leave, Robinson punched him in the face, and both men fell through the window after a short struggle, according to witnesses. Police charged Robinson, who had been booked into the Sarasota County Jail 12 times prior to the incident, with battery after emergency personnel Sarasota Memorial Hospital treated him for cuts.

+ Construction begins work on bayfront pedestrian bridge The city of Sarasota is repairing a warped pedestrian bridge that connects two of its bayfront properties. The Hog Creek pedestrian bridge links the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall to the Boulevard of the Arts property formerly occupied by the Gulfcoast Wonder and Imagination Zone (GWIZ). The bridge, which is 20 years old, is warped and will be replaced with a wood alternative, according to a city release. The expected completion date of the project is June 27. The construction project will also include replacements for four observation decks along the bay behind the Van Wezel. Work on the decks, which have become a pub-

According to listing information on Realtor.com, sales of eight residences are currently pending. Three units, ranging from $1,099,000 to $1.45 million, are currently listed, each of which has three bedrooms and three bathrooms. The architect is Mark Sultana, cofounder of DSDG Architects, whose past projects include the Sarasota Yacht Club building that was completed in 2010. Commission seeks new solutions to noise issues While considering a revised noise ordinance, city commissioners discussed alternative measures for combating issues residents have with boisterous downtown businesses. As it seeks to update its noise regulations and address concerns from downtown residents and businesses, the city of Sarasota may also have to grapple with the very nature of the mixed-use heart of the city. During a meeting Monday, the Sarasota City Commission agreed to consider a revised noise ordinance in the fall. In the process, the group also directed staff to investigate alternative methods of addressing the often-conflicting interests of residents and businesses downtown. The city has considered rewriting its noise ordinance since 2012. Police have called the current regulations too vague, and residents have argued the ordinance is too lenient. On Monday, City Attorney Robert Fournier presented a proposed new ordinance for consideration, streamlining the old rules and adding more severe punishments for repeat offenders. The revised ordinance was scheduled for discussion in February, but the city tabled the conversation so complaints from citizens could be addressed. Several residents said the new regulations were still too lenient, and that changes to the hours during which amplified noise would be allowed outdoors appeared to create a more lax standard than the current ordinance. Fournier said the revised referendum wasn’t designed to make the standards stricter or more lenient. Instead, his office had three goals: making the ordinance easier to understand and enforce, instituting increasing penalties for repeat offenders and making greater use of a “plainly audible” standard when investigating noise violations, in addition to using decibel limits. The new ordinance would establish a

Although the letter of the law would change under this ordinance, Fournier said enforcement would stay the same. Because Mattison’s has a special exception to provide amplified music one hour later than the rest of the city, enforcing a different standard elsewhere would have violated other establishments’ rights to equal protection under the law. As a result, cops have enforced the later standard across the board. Residents present at Monday’s meeting said they were more satisfied with the pro-

posed ordinance than the February draft, but still expressed displeasure with the 75-decibel standard for noise violations and the cutoff hours for outdoor amplified music. They also said enforcement of the current regulations needed to be stricter, because violators were infrequently cited. “Decibel limits are like speed limits,” downtown resident Dennis Adams said. “They are routinely violated.” The commission agreed to consider the revised ordinance at a public hearing in the fall, when more residents would be present to give feedback. In the meantime, they directed the city attorney’s office to look into alternate methods for governing how downtown bars function late at night.

REGULATION BY USE In a discussion about how a downtown noise ordinance could be applied, City Attorney Robert Fournier said it would be possible to create zoning regulations that place conditions on uses likely to create noise issues, such as late-night liquor service. Taking this approach would allow the city to better regulate how frequent offenders operate. However, Fournier warned that the procedure to institute a permitting process for these uses would be extensive. Fournier also said the city has the ability to impose conditions on an establishment’s conditional use permit to minimize adverse effects on neighboring properties, which could include noise mitigation requirements. Commissioner Paul Caragiulo suggested that the issues downtown residents have with neighboring nightlife establishments couldn’t be addressed with a citywide sound ordinance. Instead, he said, commissioners had to discuss the type of environment they want to foster in the mixed-use downtown core. “Sound is incidental to that,” Caragiulo said. “It’s about land use; it’s about planning.” Caragiulo suggested the city hire a consultant to help guide a broader conversation about managing land uses, an idea Commissioner Suzanne Atwell embraced but which other commissioners did not support. Still, the commission unanimously agreed the conversation would have to get started soon, particularly with the number of new condominiums being built in the area. “With the amount of residents we’re going to have downtown, we’re going to address it,” Commissioner Shannon Snyder said. “There’s no other way to get around it.”

Engineers present new lift station renderings City staff and the engineering team in charge of completing the Lift Station 87 project discussed the design of an above-ground structure with citizens. Moving forward with an overhauled design, the engineering firm in charge of the Lift Station 87 project led a meeting last night to update and get feedback from the public. After engineering firm McKim and Creed informed the City Commission that the original plans for an underground lift station would be vulnerable to major storms, they were directed to produce plans for a structure that could withstand a Category 3 storm surge. On May 29, the engineering firm and city staff presented two concepts for what that structure could eventually look like. After consulting with the city’s Urban Design Studio, the group decided to proceed with a high-profile building. “We decided the best option was a dominant feature — something that would draw attention to the park,” McKim and Creed Project Manager Robert Garland said. “Something the residents could be proud of and the city could be proud of.” One option was in the art deco style, while the other was a Mission-style building. Garland said it was too early to know which style the group would go with after hearing back from the public, but he said updated design plans should be ready within the next month. Lift Station 87, which will handle one-third of the city’s wastewater and replace Lift Station 7, was recently projected to cost $27.1 million, though the city is expecting to recoup some of the money paid to the previous engineering firm. Construction is slated to begin this October, with a completion date in January 2016.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR + Facts on proposed charter Dear Editor: In response to Eileen Walsh Normile’s May 15 letter regarding the petition for a revised City Charter, it’s clear the word “mayor” holds a different meaning depending on where you’ve lived. Most people I know have lived in cities where the mayor is strong — not weak — and is elected by the voters. Being elected mayor, running a city and being responsible and held accountable is serious business. We are not nearly so serious here in Sarasota, where city commissioners take turns being mayor. They vote among themselves and generally take turns for a year. Our mayor has no authority or power to accomplish goals and objectives. In Sarasota since 1945, that authority has lived in the office of the city manager. It takes three commissioners to hire or fire the city manager. The city manager can hire or fire anyone who works under him, including his deputy or department heads, without any input from the commission. The city manager

is not subject to the Sunshine Law and may speak with, advise or lobby individual commissioners at will. In the past decade, Sarasota commissioners have appointed six city managers. This has resulted in inconsistency and confusion. Another thing we do in Sarasota is vote in March. The turnout for city voters in March elections is as low as 11% and as high as 21%. Those special March elections cost taxpayers $129,000. Sarasota has five commissioners. Three are from districts and two are “at-large.” I’ve lived here 37 years, and only one person has been elected at-large who did not reside in District Two. We currently have three commissioners who reside in that same District Two. It’s Time Sarasota has proposed a comprehensive, commonsense revision of our City Charter. We want to move the vote to November when city voter turnout averages 70%; directly elect our mayor; do away with the atlarge seats; and go to five, rather than three, single-member council districts. And we have

The continual lawsuits she files, claiming abuse of the Sunshine law, are frivolous and impede the workings of a city government that, at best, is somewhat dysfunctional. Instead of helping the City Commission and the city staff to perform their duties in support of the citizenry of Sarasota, Ms. Mogenson seems intent on preventing any substantive and forward-looking work to be accomplished by these officials. I would suggest that our city legal department file meaningful countersuits to stop Ms. Mogenson’s pursuit of what appears to be her hobby to hobble the functioning of our city government. It has been claimed the mayor could fire everyone and hire whomever he or she chooses. Not so. Hiring of all key personnel must be approved by a majority vote of the council. The council would approve firing, as well — except in the case of department heads. And please consider this: What boss have you ever had who could not fire someone who worked under them who wasn’t doing his job properly? And yes, our proposed mayor may speak at will with individual council persons just as the city manager may now without it being a violation of the Sunshine law. The revised charter is 18 pages; it kept 80% of the old charter. It is easy to read and understand, and there are no hidden powers or agendas. It is a checks-and-balances charter co-drafted by people who were born here or have lived here most of their lives. Diana Hamilton Sarasota

I do not hold myself out as an expert on homelessness. I do, however, claim a modest grasp of logic and reason. Accordingly, although I do not offer a solution to this intractable problem, I submit that the creation of the proposed shelter might well be a magnet that could be expected to increase our homeless population beyond our capacity to absorb it, rather than reduce it. Do you remember Lucille Ball attempting to keep up with the flow of chocolate on the factory assembly line? A debate of the welcome mat approach to the problem might well lead to the conclusion that a shelter should not be built at all — regardless of where it would be located — and that, were it to be built, it might, at best, merely put a dent in the problem at an unjustifiably high cost. The attendant at a parking garage reported that two men wearing long-sleeved white shirts, black ties and black pants appeared to be gaining access to the storage room in the parking garage. The clothing of the men matched the clothing waiters at an adjacent restaurant wear. The owner of the restaurant told officers that he hired extra waiters for an off-site event during the weekend, and that the waiters likely mistook the garage storage room for the nearby restaurant storage room.

A man reported that his friend went to a storage unit and convinced an employee to cut the lock off a bike in the parking lot. The man shares a storage unit with his friend, and the attendant was not sure who owned the bike, but the man said it belonged to him. The man had little information regarding the bike other than the fact that it was pinkand-purple with a white basket. The man said he was unsure if he wanted to press charges, and that he has been friends with the woman in question for 40 years.

The shopper had waited at the store with his family for 45 minutes, and no employee had appeared. The front door of the store was wide open, and about seven people were walking through the shop. SUPREME BEING 5:16 p.m. — 2800 block of Ringling Boulevard. Dispute/Fight. The manager of a pizzeria called officers after a customer called the store demanding free pizza. The manager said that, three days earlier, the same customer came in and asked for another pizza because his pizza tasted strange. At first, the manager said that he couldn’t give the customer another pizza without a receipt, but eventually gave him a new pizza because the customer was getting upset. On Monday, the customer called the store and said he wanted a free pizza or else he would beat up the manager. The customer came to the store and apologized prior to police arriving.

Employees reported there appeared to be no theft of store property while it was left unoccupied.

Thirteen-year-old Hallie Schiffman was recently named the recipient of the 2014 Young Woman Sailor of the Year Award.

s a slight breeze rustles through the sails of her laser sailboat, a sense of peace washes over 13-year-old Hallie Schiffman. The Pine View School eighth-grader settles in and maneuvers her boat with ease through the waters of Sarasota Bay. It’s a typical day of practice for the competitive sailor, who has become one of the most decorated sailors in the Sarasota Youth Sailing Program. “I just like being out on the water,” Schiffman says. “I can relate to the boat, in a way, because I’m one with the boat. It’s just me.” On May 15, Schiffman was recognized for her efforts and dedication to sailing when she was presented with the Florida Women’s Sailing Association’s Youth Woman Sailor of the Year Award. It was Schiffman’s third time being nominated for the award, which is typically awarded to high school and college students. “We have the opportunity to recognize, support and grow our next Olympic competitor as (Hallie’s) skill grows exponentially,” says Linda Schwartz of the Luffing Lassies, which nominated Schiffman for the award. “She possesses a maturity, discipline and devotion to sailing that is rarely seen in someone her age.” Schiffman learned she had won the award while participating in the 2014 KO Sailing USODA Team Trials in Stamford, Conn.

“I was happy because Paige Railey, who is an Olympic sailor and got gold medals, earned the award three years before me,” Schiffman says. “I was happy to have my name next to her. I’ve always liked her. She’s always done well, and I can kind of relate to her.”

WATER BABY

A self-described “water baby,” Schiffman has been sailing since she was young. But it wasn’t until she was 10 years old that Schiffman began competing in the sport. Although, Schiffman admits that, at first, the sport wasn’t just for her. “My parents sailed when they were younger, and they wanted to get me into it,” Schiffman says. “I didn’t like it at first because I was afraid of sharks. The thought of being on these little boats and tipping over scared me.” Schiffman faced her fears and quickly realized tipping over was just an unfortunate part of the sport. “I got over that really quickly,” Schiffman says. “I’m not nervous anymore. It’s so peaceful now that I like it.” Schiffman quickly developed both a knack and passion for sailing that have allowed her to achieve unprecedented success at an early age. In October 2012, she qualified for the BMW Team Race Cup in Berlin. Three months later, she was invited to compete in Argentina; and in March 2013, Schiff-

man was selected to compete in Italy. In July 2013, Schiffman represented Team USA at the North American championships in Bermuda. This spring, Schiffman was chosen to compete in Spain; and last month she was chosen to represent Team USA at the British nationals. Schiffman made the U.S. National teams in both 2013 and 2014. As one of the top 40 kids, Schiffman was invited to participate in Team Trials, which allows sailors to receive special training from Olympians. Schiffman has made six international teams over the past three years, having represented the U.S. in Bermuda and Germany while passing on the other four due to financial constraints. “Hallie is out on the water all of the time,” Schiffman’s mother, Andrea, says. “Time on the water helps kids really excel. You can only learn so much from the coaches. Being out on the water is when you really put it into practice.”

BRIGHT FUTURE

Schiffman practices almost daily at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron. When she’s not sailing, Schiffman spends time serving as the first mate on her father, Mark’s, Jolly Mon charter sailing catamaran. “It’s really fun,” Schiffman says. “I just enjoy being out on the boat.” Over Memorial Day weekend, Schiffman competed in her first laser boat regatta — the School’s Out Regatta, at Davis Island. Schiffman finished first in her new boat, which is an Olympic-class boat. “I like the venue,” Schiffman says. “It’s fun and kind of challenging.” Schiffman will now spend the summer transitioning to her new laser boat, which is a larger single boat, and practicing on 420 boats, which are two-person boats, in preparation for her next competitive season with the Sarasota Youth Sailing Program this fall. She also plans to spend her Friday nights helping crew keel boats with some of the Sarasota Sailing Squadron’s older members. In addition to sailing in college, Schiffman has aspirations of competing in the 2020 and 2024 Summer Olympics, as well as sailing around the world. Schiffman wants to skipper an all-women’s crew in the Volvo Ocean Race and compete in the Vendee Globe, a solo race around the world. “She’s never afraid,” Andrea Schiffman says. “She knows how to handle boats so well that we never get worried.” Contact Jen Blanco at jblanco@yourobserver.com.

The Sarasota High football team fell to visiting St. Petersburg High 44-0 in its spring game May 23. The Sailors turned the ball over six times in the game, which was head coach Brian Ryalsâ€™ coaching debut. Sarasota dropped a similar lopsided decision to the Green Devils last spring before going on to win the district title in the fall. Sarasota will spend the summer learning and growing from the loss in preparation for its fall kickoff classic Aug. 22 at Dixie Hollins before opening the regular season Aug. 29 versus Booker.

The Field House is the final phase of the Moore Athletic Complex at Turner Fields. High school seniors traded their usual clothing styles for caps, gowns and tassels. Sarasota High seniors graduated Friday, on the school’s football field. Despite the weather, families gathered to celebrate the class’ achievement. Senior Mirriam Barrera’s family brought orange-and-white balloons to show their support. Booker and Riverview high seniors graduated Saturday, at Robarts Arena. The auditorium was filled with friends and family for both graduations. And Pine View School for the Gifted held its graduation Sunday, at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. The seniors celebrated with a senior breakfast before the ceremony. “It’s bittersweet,” says Daniel Yohann.

The Florida Alliance for Arts Education (FAAE) recognized seven Florida public schools as Arts Achieve! Model Schools, and Booker Middle School was among them. The administrators at Booker Middle Schools have been awarded full conference scholarships to FAAE’s annual leadership summit in Orlando to further strengthen their success in arts education and help them connect with other art educators from around the state. The winning schools will also be presented with an Arts Achieve! award during a luncheon June 20 at the summit.

New College of Florida student Abigail Oakes has been awarded a Udall Scholarship for her devotion to the environment and her community. Oakes is one of 50 students nationwide to be recognized. The third-year natural sciences student was also named a national Newman Civic Fellow for her service to the community.

EGG-CELLENT EDUCATION For 21 days first-grade students at The Out-of-Door Academy cared for a clutch of eggs to learn about life cycles. The students kept the eggs in an incubator, before chicks hatched from the eggs. On May 16, the class delivered the newly hatched chicks to their permanent residence at the Swain Family Farm, which one of the students’ grandparents owns.

Alta Vista flashes back in time to the 1970s Alta Vista Elementary School’s fifth-graders dressed up for “Flashback to the ’70s” Friday. The daylong event invited students to relive the ’70s with tie-dyed shirts, beaded necklaces and a peace protest through the cafeteria. The students have been learning about the decade by reading the 1977 fiction work “Bridge to Terabithia,” by Katherine Paterson. After the peace walk, students relaxed by watching the film adaptation of the book.

What’s been your favorite part of today? I think walking and showing everyone that peace and happiness is OK is something everyone can enjoy. We set an example today.

How did today go? What we’re doing is really good — the little kids need to stop and think about what we’re doing.

What was something you learned about the ’70s? What they wore back then compared to what we wear today.

What was your favorite part about learning about the ’70s? The music and the different groups of peace walkers like the Black Panthers, the SDS (Students for Democratic Society) and the hippies.

If you lived in the ’70s how would you spend your time? I’d go to the festivals a lot. I like the music from back then.

What was something new you learned about life back then? That boys and girls had to dress a certain way, like no jeans for girls, and boys had to wear fancy clothes and short hair.

Siesta Kiwanis Club gala takes guests to paradise The Siesta Key Kiwanis Club held its 13th annual gala Saturday, at the Sarasota Yacht Club. This year’s gala was themed “Tropical Nights in Paradise.” Members dressed in Hawaiian shirts and tropical clothes as they listened to Jimmy Buffett songs. Siesta Key resident stars in new reality series Daiquiri Deck held a red carpet premiere party for the Weather Channel’s “Catching Hell” Sunday. The series follows the crew of three commercial vessels fishing for a profit. One of the crew members, Lisa Rollins, is a Siesta Key resident. Rollins is the only woman featured on the series and has been spearfishing since 2005. Even though Rollins and her cast members often come face to face with sharks, the North Carolina native wasn’t fazed. “Working with the spear keeps that little bit of edge and keeps me on my toes,” she says. On Sunday, cast members, friends and fans watched the premiere at Daiquiri Deck’s Raw Bar. “I know what I’m doing and having people learn about spearfishing makes it more exciting for me,” she said. The premiere raised money for Soldiers Undertaking Disabled Scuba (SUDS), a nonprofit that trains disabled veterans how to scuba dive.

Now, all they have to do is raise their goal of $175,000 to get up and running and fund their first year of production. “Some people will catch on with our passion and believe in (and support it), and for others, it might take a little while,” Wallace says. So far, they haven’t seen the latter. And as business partners first and friends second, they think they can make it exactly the kind of place people want to go: where seasoned theater goers and new theater goers, retirees and young professionals can see new works, or works they haven’t yet seen. “Theater shouldn’t be an event you plan a month in advance,” she says. “But it’s something that on a Friday night you can think, ‘Oh yeah! Baltimore to found Single Carrots Theatre in 2007. The group of “entirely too many people to open a theater” had $1,000 to start. Ragan thinks it only worked because they were passionate and young enough to have other jobs. Single Carrots, with fewer partners, is still functioning today. Ragan stepped out of the business to attend graduate school here. It was a lesson in learning. Opening a nonprofit theater is a thankless 24/7 job, and before you have staff, you have to do everything yourself. Ragan knows he has to do everything from sweeping the floor to networking with other organizations. “I learned that it takes a village to raise a theater,” he says. “It’s

the kitchen table meeting. “We sat down and had a conversation about our goals and our bigger dreams for what we could do for ourselves,” she says. They were two young people with a big vision. Both wanted to make art, were on similar career paths and had a mutual respect for quality theater. Plus, Sarasota was lacking the type of venue they hoped to open: intimate, contemporary, producing lesserknown works, year-round. “There’s a huge gaping hole in Sarasota,” Ragan says. “Theaters are doing tremendous work, there’s nothing wrong with the work they are doing — but in a diverse theater community, you need a small, cutting-edge black box theater doing cutting-edge work.” Ragan knows about opening a small cutting-edge theatre such as this venture. Upon getting his bachelor’s degree in acting from the University of Colorado, he and 10 of his classmates moved to

Students ages 5 to 77 demonstrated knowledge they learned in classes such as stage acting, hip hop and tap dancing and youth and adult singing. The variety of classes led to a diverse End of the Year Showcase featuring everything from children singing “ABC” and acting in scenes from “Snow White” to tappers ages 9 to 77 sharing the stage in a dance. THEATER // ‘I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti’

// The Artist Series Concerts — Ollarsaba and Hill

“When all else fails, make pasta.” That’s the simple philosophy of Giulia Melucci’s memoir, “I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti.” Jacques Lamarre adapted it as a onewoman play. It’s now simmering on stage in an Asolo Rep production, directed by Rob Ruggiero with Antoinette LaVecchia in the role of Giulia. And, yes, she makes spaghetti. A three-course meal, actually — which she serves up to seven tables of paying patrons close to the stage. (Critic’s note: Unless you plan to be one of these patrons, eat a nice meal before you come or it might drive you nuts.) As the play unfolds, Giulia cooks her signature Italian dishes from scratch. Along the way, she dishes about a long line of Mr. Wrongs. These include: a skittish MTV producer; a Charles Nelson Reilly-esque cartoonist; a Foster’s-chugging alcoholic/ unpublished writer; and a blunt, pot-smoking, barely published, Scottish writer. (If that sounds like a cross-section of the New York City creative scene, that’s no coincidence. The real-life Giulia works at Harper’s magazine.) Each bad boyfriend comes with a good recipe. Each anecdote is usually interrupted by a cell phone call from Giulia’s oldschool Italian-American mother. Ruggiero directs this lighter-than-air material with the rapid-fire timing of screwball comedy. Basically, we’re talking two-part comic monologue. Within that structure, LaVecchia delivers. She has the chops of a great stand-up comedian. LaVecchia does character voices, from Valley Girl ditz, to a nasal Charles Nelson Reilly, to a Scottish freeloader’s burr. She breaks the fourth wall, riffs with various

Tenor Jeffrey Hill and bass-baritone Richard Ollarsaba, with pianist Avis Romm, appeared on the Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota last weekend at the Historic Asolo Theater in a program that started and ended, cleverly enough, with a duet from “City of Angels.” At the beginning, they were pouting, “You’re Nothing Without Me,” but by the finale they were good buddies, singing, “I’m Nothing Without You.” In between, their music ranged from Lieder and art songs to arias and Broadway — some performed with more success than others. The singers and pianist seemed much more at home with the classical portions of the program. Ollarsaba’s performance of “Il modo di prender moglie,” a comic song in Italian by Schubert, was charming, funny and strong, with more overtones of the Count in Mozart’s “Marriage of Figaro” than the prolific Lieder composer. His renditions of Copland’s “Zion’s Walls” and Steven Mark Kohn’s “Farmer’s Cursed Wife” were stylish and hearty, while Hill’s delivery of two similar American songs by Hub Miller, “Spinning Song” and “Half and Half,” were tender and eloquent. Much of Hill’s choices of songs didn’t fit his light tenor. Several were too low for him, causing him to stretch the bottom of his voice to depths he doesn’t seem able to handle at this point in his career. And, when it came to the more trendy songs — “People” and “They Just Keep Moving the Line” from the TV show “Smash” — he just didn’t seem comfortable with the pop style. “Smash,” in particular, calls for a brassy, Broadway belt, something this

It’s a miracle!”) Like any good comic, she gets the audience on her side in a warm, engaging, authentic performance. And, let’s not forget. Along with killing the audience with this rapid-fire, “Sex and the City”-style innuendo, LaVecchia (in character as Giulia) is also preparing a complicated meal. When she “makes spaghetti,” she literally makes spaghetti — from scratch. A higher level of difficulty. It’s like watching a high-wire act. Cooking is an ephemeral art — and a nice juxtaposition to transitory relationships. You spend 90 minutes chopping up herbs, simmering sauce and kneading and slicing pasta; 45 minutes to enjoy the meal; then it’s over. Guilia’s bad boyfriends? She’s over them, too. The character keeps a hurt locker of mementos: a can of Foster’s, an ice cream scoop, a Stevie Wonder CD, to name a few. At the end of the play, Giulia trashes them. Having served her guests a great meal, she’s now eager to leave for a rendezvous with a possible Mr. Right. This time, he’s cooking for her. Risotto, in fact. Jeffrey Hill classically trained tenor doesn’t have. But Ollarsaba seemed as at home with the Broadway tunes as he was with opera. His performance of the Toreador Song from Bizet’s “Carmen,” an aria with a range similar to that of the “StarSpangled Banner,” which took the singer an octave and a fifth, from bottom to top, was stirring, as was his rendition of “The Impossible Dream” from “Man of La Mancha.” The person who seemed the most discomfited by the range of repertoire was Romm, who was much more attuned to the songs and arias in the first half than the Broadway and pop tunes in the second. It’s hard to switch from one genre to another, and this program was so wide in its range, it’s amazing they were able to pull it all together as well as they did. Fortunately, the concert was billed as an entertainment, rather than a recital, and the performers managed to entertain the audience well with their differing styles, excellent diction and obvious love of the music. — June LeBell

ummer days are here and Sarasotans are heading out to the beaches to enjoy it — but going to the beach isn’t as simple as just going to the beach. One needs the appropriate gear to spend a day in the sun and water, so BT shopped around town to find the best items to ensure that you are beach ready.

SUSAN MCLEOD The semi-annual exhibition of the monumental structures has once again left the bayfront (only to return again in November), so there is no better time to take one last look at the installations and to get to know more about the woman behind it all. After strolling the exhibition with Season of Sculpture board Chairwoman Susan McLeod, we escaped the heat inside O’Leary’s Tiki Bar and Grill, grabbed some iced coffees and talked about the loves of her life, her passion for the arts and, of course, Season of Sculpture.

I spent summers in Penland, N.C., sculpted with clay, I’ve blown some glass, had a small gallery on Siesta Key in the ’70s, had a major glass gallery on St. Armands in the ’80s, right in the beginning of the popularity of the American studio glass movement — it’s not new to me to be involved in the arts.

is something that has also always been very important to me. In terms of the length of time I have been in Sarasota, I’ve been on the board of the Humane Society, I’ve served on the Asolo board, the

I WAS ASKED to be on the board of Season of Sculpture and I have been involved since Season II. I have been so impacted by the statement it makes and how loud we are able to make a statement of the artistic appreciation in our community and about the strength of the arts and culture core of Sarasota. For the last two years, the organization has functioned solely on volunteers. We’ve been through a period where visual arts enjoyed more financial support than we are seeing today, at least on a local level. Upwards of 80% of the funding required for this to exist is from personal donations. It’s one of the ways we know the public and the local people enjoy this exhibition. It’s very tough to be a tourist driving down U.S. 41, seeing the sculptures and not understanding the essence of what we are as a community. I think that’s why we’re all so passionate and dedicated to it. It’s a lot of work and it costs a lot of money, but it’s worth it. I’M A REALTOR and you know,

real estate is a 24/7 job, but it makes it easier for me to be able to do both real estate and Season of Sculpture. The phone is always

ringing and the computer is always open, but I can fluctuate my time back and forth.

WHEN I HAVE the time, I paint,

mainly with watercolors. When things get really hectic, that’s how I cocoon, the paintbrush. Reading, films, going to museums, I enjoy all of that — it pretty much all stays in the art world.

I ALSO LOVE to cook. I love to

have intimate dinner parties and cook for everyone. I like experimenting with food. A kitchen is a studio — where I paint is a studio, my kitchen is also a studio. It’s a fun place to experiment, but with

foods instead of paints.

TRAVELING IS another thing I love. I enjoy getting away and do a lot of exploring. I’ve had a wonderful trip to Africa, trips to Europe, trips to the islands and I’m planning a trip to the Bahamas soon. It will be a nice little getaway.

MY TWO grandchildren are the loves of my life. They are little artistic creations themselves. When my granddaughter was younger, she would borrow my camera and take photographs — she loved taking photographs, at such a young age. She’s now studying photography and has even won awards for

her work. It’s been my pleasure to have been an initiation in that. My grandson, whatever we are doing involves the water, most likely a fishing pole. We draw together in my studio, we are always painting and drawing. In fact, most of my office walls are covered in their artwork.

I’M LOOKING forward to seeing

what happens with the evolution of Season of Sculpture. I think it’s a turning point for us — I’ve been involved with it for a long time and we have some new avenues to explore, and who knows. I just know that I’m definitely going to the Bahamas soon.

I moved back to Michigan when my husband got his M.B.A., then back to Florida. I moved to Sarasota in 1971, and at that point I became a single mom and the three of us have lived here ever since, well, until they graduated from college. My oldest son lives in St. Petersburg and my youngest son and his family live here. I have a golden; I always have a golden retriever. She’s 5 years old and her name is Samantha.
