SECONDHAND SMOKE

For newly Sarasota-based artist Rob Tarbell, being out of control is half the fun.

“It always puts me in the place of being the learner,” Rob Tarbell says. “Masters (of paint) know how to manipulate paint ... With smoke, it’s hard to manipulate because it’s conditional.”

canvas extends from the ceiling of a tent at an angle over artist Rob Tarbell’s head. In one hand, the newly Sarasota-based artist holds a kebab skewer with an alligator clip attached to the tip. The clip clamps a plastic grocery store membership card cut into rectangular pieces the size of a fingernail.

Tarbell uses the plastic rewards and membership cards that accumulate in one’s wallet and lights them on fire. Other times, he’ll burn old 35-millimeter photo slides. He uses the smoke to create art.

Today’s credit card smoke billows above to the canvas. He creates an image by covering and uncovering portions of translucent tracing paper lying on top of the canvas (similar to a stencil) and by manipulating the angles of the canvas. Contrary to the surrealist method of fumage that uses a candle to burn places of the canvas, Tarbell layers the soot.

The longer he exposes the naked portions of canvas to smoke, the darker the area becomes.

Sometimes the smoke sneaks onto portions of the canvas he’s been hiding, but he doesn’t mind. Tarbell finds beauty in trying to control the uncontrollable.

has tried to make him think traditionally. For instance, in grade school he took group art lessons at the Cleveland Art Institute.

The teachers directed the students to draw a cast of Rodin’s “The Thinker.”

“But I wanted to draw underwater fish scenes,” Tarbell says.

“They’d say, ‘We’re doing this,’ and I’d say, ‘No! Check out this underwater bass eating a fish.’ I guess that bleeds into how I do what I want now.”

Tarbell was traditionally trained up to a graduate-degree level of painting, but he never used traditional methods or me-

diums. Before his painted work went up in smoke, he painted with varnish, typically used as a protective finish, that he’d enhance with color pigment.

He likes using methods or mediums that are hard to control because he says it always puts him in the place of being a learner. With paint, there were already masters that led the way in teaching generations how to manipulate it. With smoke, Tarbell figured it out. No one taught him.

“It’s fun to just gauge what’s going to happen,” he says. “… that constant figuring it out of, ‘How can I make this work.?”

He sites a few inspirations for his self-created medium. The idea started forming when, on a visit to Italy, Tarbell learned about the accumulation of smoke on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. He also attempted creating a portrait of his friends who smoked and drank a lot using smoke from unfiltered Lucky Strikes that went horribly wrong.

The smoke didn’t accumulate.

That’s when he decided to burn and make use of those membership cards fattening up his wallet — that was nearly 10 years ago.

Since the early days, he’s had a few fiery incidents when the

canvas has caught ablaze and burned up his art. He wears shorts — because he learned he could feel if something is on fire before he can necessarily see the fire — in addition to a gas mask with an air filtration unit to prevent inhaling the toxic fumes.

Right now, he’s working in a tent set up at a warehouse studio space located near Booker High School. It’s temporary.

He and his wife, Anna VanGehr, moved to Sarasota from Charlottesville, Va., in June 2013 for her new job at The Ringling.

They’ll settle into a new home with a built-on studio at the end

of May. Since coming here, Tarbell hasn’t started any new pieces.

He’s instead focusing on finishing ones he started in Virginia.

He made his Sarasota debut when Allyn Gallup Contemporary Art featured a couple of his pieces in its “Made in Sarasota” show.

Tarbell says Sarasota is probably the friendliest place he’s ever lived. The natural lighting here is unique.

“They say it takes two years for a new place’s influence to have an effect,” he says. “I imagine it will be in the use of light.”

Caulkins sheds light on Key Chorale’s ‘Luminosity’ For Key Chorale’s upcoming concert, “Luminosity,” the group commissioned a new work. Artistic Director Joseph Caulkins sat down with The Observer to discuss the new piece. The following are edited excerpts of the conversation.

So, for those who don’t know — tell us about Key Chorale.

We’re a (fully auditioned) symphonic-size chorus (meaning we are 100 voices or more) plus a small core of 25 professionals who make up a chamber chorus. I think what also separates us from other groups is our commitment to collaboration. Every event or concert is in collaboration with someone else.

Key Chorale occasionally commissions a new piece. What is a memorable piece that stands out?

We only do commissions every four or five years … The most memorable was for our 20th anniversary, “Three Days by the Sea,” composed by Gwyneth Walker … a few years back she wrote an orchestration for “Three Days by the Sea” that we will perform for our 30th anniversary (next season).

This year, Key Chorale commissioned the young Norwegian composer Ola Gjelio — why him?

In 2007, “Ubi Caritas,” his Latin-text piece, was performed at the Choral Directors Association … This is a sound I’d never really heard before then … Since then, I’ve followed his growth as a composer … We’ve performed a lot of his works throughout the last

Describe his music.

He manages to have kind of a cinematic nature about his music ... I love the fact that he always finds the way to add drama … Most of the pieces you hear of his, I think you’re overwhelmed with his ability to create beautiful sounds and harmonies that are just amazing.

Now tell me about the piece he commissioned — “The Lake Isle:” There are two parts to it. The first part has only been performed a handful of times … It takes text

from William Butler Yeats that talks about this peaceful place you can go and how the poet is filled with solitude and peacefulness …

We were talking about different projects, and Ola said, “Maybe ‘The Lake Isle’ needs a sequel.”

So, taking ideas of part one, he explored and created a second part for Key Chorale.

For the text, he partnered with Charles Anthony Silvestri, a young American poet. Silvestri wrote an original poem, but takes Yeats’ idea of solitude and peacefulness.

The music complements part one so well, that I can’t imagine doing one without the other.

What has the choir’s response been to it so far? … Usually, you have to work

We hear it’s about a personal utopia? Could you touch on this?

What I kind of told the choir as we have been preparing it is that all of us have that place, whether it’s an actual place you go for peace or solitude or an imaginative place.

What’s your personal utopia?

What’s your happy spot?

I have a little cottage in France

that we go to in the summer, and it is kind of built into the side of a little mountain. Over the past three or four years, I’ve put a trail in that goes all the way to the top where you can see the Pyrenees and the town that sits in a valley.

Any final words about the piece?

Ola has only used guitar in his compositions a couple of times, so he used Kristian Kvalvaag to help (consult). Both Kristian and Ola will be here for the weekend and they’ll be playing “The Lake Isle” for piano and guitar. Along the way in this concert, they will play a few improvisations.

Embracing Our Differences celebrates writers, artists The quote winners wore blue sashes and the art winners wore red ones. Artists, families and teachers, plus board members and supporters of Embracing Our Differences, celebrated the free outdoor exhibit at a reception Tuesday, April 15, at the Ulla Searing Student Center at Ringling College of Art and Design.

The winners were selected from 6,079 submissions, 52 countries, 44 states, and the final selections appeared on billboard-sized prints in two locations where more than 273,000 visitors saw them.

// La Musica final program La Musica ended its season April 16 with a wonderfully sculpted program it played with precision and beauty. Unfortunately, the house was only about half full, so many of Sarasota’s chamber music enthusiasts missed one of the best concerts of the year.

Opening with Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet, clarinetist Jose FranchBallester, violinists Massimo Quarta and Laura Zarina, violist Bruno Giuranna and cellist Julie Albers, had all the color and bubbles this work demands.

Known over the past couple of Jose Franch-Ballester decades as the “M*A*S*H” Quintet because it was used to underscore the final episode of the popular TV program, Mozart – who loved the clarinet — pulled out his attaché case of amazing sounds and delivered a work that overflows with melodies and harmonies no one else could or would have devised. There’s just no one like Mozart when it comes to brilliant musical twists and turns and, in his A major Quintet, the composer gave us everything to make him live up to his “Zauber” (magic) reputation.

with Franch-Ballester absolutely singing the second movement in a way reminiscent of a great Countess singing “Porgi Amor” in “Le Nozze di Figaro.” It was a memorable performance.

Bartok’s brilliant, jazzy, quirky “Contrasts” followed, with pianist Derek Han joining Franch-Ballester and Zarina. “Contrasts,” which Benny Goodman commissioned for a whopping $300, has everything a musician could want to play and an audience could want to hear, from Hungarian and Romanian folk tunes to spicy jazz. The trio negotiated the contrary motion scales and the lyrical, tipsy dances in bi-and poly-modalities with tremendous strength, while Franch-Ballester switched from one clarinet to another and Zarina changed violins (one tuned normally and the other, not). The trio brough exquisite colors to this already colorful work.

Finally, New York Philharmonic principal violist Cynthia Phelps joined Quarta, Albers and Han in Dvorak’s E-flat major Piano Quartet, a work that brings us even more modal sounds and folk themes than Bartok’s “Contrasts.” From the opening unison among the three strings to the rhapsodic Gypsy rhythms, this is an inspired work that’s gutsy, romantic and familiar, because some of the themes sound much like Dvorak’s symphonies. In fact, the main theme in the third movement, which makes use of the harmonic minor scale, is almost a dead-ringer for a theme in the second movement of the composer’s Symphony No. 8, written about 10 years earlier. If you’re going to steal, you might as well steal from yourself, especially when it’s good.

Han, Quarta and Albers were in fine form for their performance, with great attention to the tricky pitches and exuberant rhythms.

What a great way to conclude a season.

Brown put it in there. And, boy, did the opening-night audience laugh. Director Mark Shanahan (a sure-handed veteran of several Brown comedies) pushed all the right buttons.

The safety bar came down, and the ride was on.

Nine actors serve as carnies and roustabouts on Mr. Tom’s Wild Ride. Matthew Goodrich (who’s the spitting image of the young Finney) plays the titular hero. He’s heroic, honest, inventive, kind, and faithful — well, no, you can’t have everything. Bruce Warren’s Blifil is the designated creep who foils Tom’s plans. Warren’s a great physical comic, with a range veering from Jackie Gleason double-takes to Terry Jones’ drag bits. Faith Sandberg’s Sophia reminds me of a tough-minded Tracey Ullman character transported to the 18th century. Graciany Miranda gets consistent laughs as the magical narrator. As Sophia’s father, Howard Kaye goes into instant rants like a low-rent King Lear. Ron Seibert’s Squire Allworthy is the only sane one. (Even whacky plays need a straight man.) Kudos also to Lisa McMillan, Wilmari Myburgh and Eileen Ward as various twins, dowagers and doctors. There are no weak links here — a great team of comic actors, who make the ride seem effortless.

Bored? Here’s an idea for those of you with abundant time and disposable income.

Rent a cabin and download a copy of Henry Fielding’s “Tom Jones” on your Kindle. (Or buy a physical book, if you’re the retro type.)

It’s a funny book — at least once you start to think like an 18th century Englishman, which usually takes your first week. Plan for a three-week stay: Fielding’s novel weighs in at around 1,000 pages. If you’re pressed for time, no worries. Playwright Mark Brown read the book for you and distilled it into a 90-minute play. You can check out the premiere at Florida Studio Theatre.

Fielding’s novel is a sprawling, discursive, good-hearted tale of a rake’s odyssey across England. Brown’s adaptation is a fast-paced, take-no-prisoners “Monty Python”-style farce.

A quick summary? Well, that’s sort of like reducing “Atlas Shrugged” to a Twitter post — so let’s skip it. “Rake’s Odyssey” will do.

Brown shoehorns a surprising amount of Fielding’s 346,747-word story onto the stage intact. But plot is pretext for “Looney Tunes” comedy. This is the playwright behind the heroically whacky adaptation of “Around the World in 80 Days,” after all. You know you’re in for a ride.

Low comedy? Well, just call it comedy.

Brown leaves no pun left unpunished or bawdy joke unsaid. Anachronisms? You bet. Influences? You name it. We mentioned the Monty Python troupe. The robots who talk through the movie on Mystery Science Theater 3,000 are a clear influence as well; the actors give voice to the playwright’s muttered asides. Brainy stuff? Sure. Brown’s a fan of post-modern gags pointing out the dramaturgical machinery. The Narrator (who boasts he can wander into any scene at will) thanks the second act audience for coming back and says he’s not worried about the ones who didn’t because, “We already have their money.” (There’s even a throwaway nod to English majors for a character Fielding pulled out of his hat in the last chapter!) Sight gags?

From revolving beds to plastic babies that’s a yes. Did a Welsh pop star steal the hero’s name from the Albert Finney movie? Cue: “It’s Not Unusual.” Did Finney have a famous food-seduction scene? The kitchen sink? I think he’s saving it for the musical.

Method: 1. Sweat onion in olive oil until tender, and sweat garlic until golden brown.

2. Add cream and stock and bring to a boil.

3. Add barley and season with salt and pepper. Cook until tender (about 45 minutes).

4. Add fresh chopped tomato and basil, taste and adapt seasoning if needed and reserve.

GRILLED PINEAPPLE SALSA Ingredients: • 3 to 4 fresh pineapple rings • 1 tbsp. finely diced shallots • 1 tbsp. parsley • 1 tbsp. cilantro • ½ oz. madeira Method: 1. salt and pepper pineapple rings and mark them on the grill. Then dice them.

2. Combine all the ingredients

FISH Ingredients: • 1 to 2 filets mahi, swordfish or cobia per taco Method: 1. Lightly season fish with Cajun spice blend (about 2 oz. per taco).

2. Sear fish.

3. Place it on warmed taco, spoon salsa and garnish with a green onion.

ARTICHOKES EN BARIGOULE Ingredients: • 2 carrots peeled, quartered and sliced • 1 leek washed, sliced and blanched • 1 stick of unsalted butter • ½ cup white wine • bouquet of bay leaf and fresh thyme • 2 cups chicken stock • 2 cups cooked artichokes

• 4 6 to 8 oz. Mahi Mahi steaks wellseasoned with kosher salt and fresh black pepper • 2 oz. olive oil

2. Add cooked artichokes and blanched leeks. Season to taste.

SPRING PEA BASIL PESTO Ingredients: • 2 cups blanched peas • ¼ bunch fresh basil leaves • ¼ cup toasted almonds • 1 tbsp. roasted garlic • 1 cup cream

Method: 1. Pre-heat oven 350 degrees with convection fan on.

2. Place a sauté pan on stovetop with olive oil in pan and allow pan to get smoking hot.

3. Carefully place fish in oil and sear until golden brown.

4. Turn fish with spatula and place pan in oven allowing fish to cook for 8 to 10 minutes.

5. Plate fish adding blanched asparagus to fish pan and lightly roast it.

Method: Puree ingredients together in a processor and season to taste

PAN-SEARED GROUPER LETTUCE WRAPS with apricot salsa, avocado mignonette and Carribean slaw (serves four) Created by Chef Pedro Flores CARIBBEAN SLAW Ingredients: • ½ head of shaved red cabbage • ¼ cup chopped cilantro • 1 teaspooon Sriracha • 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar • ½ cup shaved Bermuda onion • 2 tbsp. pineapple juice Method: 1. In a large mixing bowl add and toss all ingredients. Let sit in refrigerator for approximately 5 minutes.

APRICOT SALSA Ingredients: • 3 chopped apricots • 1 tbsp. basil

• 1 diced scallion • ½ lime, juiced • 1 pinch kosher salt Method: 1. Mix all ingredients. Let sit in refrigerator approximately 5 minutes.

GROUPER Ingredients: • 2 filets grouper • Olive oil • Kosher salt, to taste Method: 1. Pan sear grouper with kosher salt and olive oil.

2. Cut into strips and place in bib lettuce. Add slaw and salsa.

SNAPPER AND GROUPER CHEEKS Ingredients: • 1 whole snapper (1 to 1.5 lbs) • 3 grouper cheeks (.25 lbs) • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste • ½ cup all purpose flour • 1 cup panko bread crumbs • ½ cup olive oil • ½ cup rosemary, chopped • ¼ cup parsley, chopped • 3 garlic cloves, minced Method: 1. Remove (or if you get your fish from Walt’s have them remove) stomach, scales, gills and score the fish.

2. Combine rosemary, parsley, garlic, sea salt, freshly ground black pepper and olive oil together in a bowl and whisk together. Season fish with 1/2 of the mixture and reserve the rest.

3. Pre-heat grill over medium-high and oven to broil. When grill is

preheated place fish and cook evenly for 2 minutes on each side.

4. Finish the fish in the oven for approximately 8 minutes. When it’s finished, drizzle ¼ rosemary olive oil on top.

5. Dip cheeks in egg wash, then into flour and again into egg wash.

6. Toss grouper into panko bread crumbs and fry in a pan (or deep fry).

Once boiling, reduce to medium-low and cover and simmer until tender for approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Drain the water.

2. While potatoes are cooking, puree the artichokes with heavy cream.

3. Place drained potatoes in mixing bowl and mash until smooth.

Stir in softened butter, scallion and artichoke puree until butter has melted. Season to taste.

ARTICHOKE POTATOES Ingredients: • 1 cup red potatoes • 1 cup artichoke hearts • 1 scallion, chopped • ¼ cup unsalted butter • ¼ cup heavy cream • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to desired liking

VEGETABLES Ingredients: • ¼ cup broccoli • ¼ cup spinach • ¼ cup carrot • ¼ cup asparagus

Method: 1. Place potatoes in a large pot with enough water to cover and bring to a boil over high heat.

Method: 1. Place two cups of water in pot and bring to a boil. Boil all vegetables until tender; drain.

2. Heat cooking pan to medium high with ¼ rosemary olive oil.

Cook vegetables for 1 minute.

Chef Lam Lum gives cooking class a taste of Asia Taste of Asia held another class in its cooking class series April 14, at the restaurant’s new location on Tamiami Trail. Chef Lam Lum taught more than 10 students how to prepare yellow curry during the class.

The evening began with guests being treated to wine or beer along with Vietnam rolls and Lum-rolls for an appetizer. After preparing yellow curry that the students bagged up to take home to finish preparing for a later time, Chef Lum prepared Koor Mee Lao, a rice noodle dish, for the students to enjoy for dinner.

More than 300 guests fashioned in white attire — many wearing white Tshirts with the hashtag #RescuesRock — joined in the foyer Thursday, April 17, at The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota for the eighth annual Paws on the Catwalk luncheon.

The event’s theme #RescuesRock was coined by Co-Chairs Alex Miller and Chris Voelker, who used the hashtag to bring more awareness to the event and encouraged those to post their photos while enjoying the afternoon and supporting the cause. “#RescuesRock was to promote the idea that adopting a shelter pet not only saves a life, but is a cool thing to do as well,” says Christen Benson, The Humane Society of Sarasota County’s director of marketing.

The day began with pop-up shops and a silent auction in the foyer, offering merchandise from local boutiques. Guests shopped until the luncheon began, carrying their items around in the stylish

silver totes provided by Influence Style, and some stopped in the State Street Eating House’s “Mojito Lounge” to grab a refresher.

Following lunch, Ken Sons emceed the live auction, which raised $25,000.

The lucky winner of the “Make Your Pet a Superstar” item contributed $5,000, and gets to see their pet on the cover of The New Barker. Contributing $1,000, Samantha Jennen won the “Your New Best Friend” puppy auction, bringing home a new puppy and, as a surprise, a second puppy was offered in the auction — Jill Raleigh couldn’t resist the fluffy retriever mix and won the auction, contributing $1,300 to the cause. Even more notable than the success of those items: the “All Aboard a 61’ Yacht” item went for $10,000.

Newlyweds’ Easter … Family was on the agenda for both of Sarasota’s beautiful recent brides. outure is not an option for Jacqueline Morton — it’s a lifestyle. The Sarasota native, who was once a buyer in New York City, is no stranger to the likes of one-of-a-kind fashions.

“When I was a young girl growing up in Sarasota, there was no place to buy clothes, so my mother had everything made,” says Morton, “Our aunt would send us Vogue from Boston, and we would see what we liked and have it made.”

Not much has changed for the queen of couture, who continues to not only buy oneof-a-kind clothing, but also frequently has pieces altered and adjusted. Referring to herself as a “frustrated fashion designer,” Morton customizes everything, from redesigning shoes and clothes by adding this or taking

away that, to resizing them.

“You do what you have to do,” she says.

It’s only appropriate that such a marvelous wardrobe have a closet of the same caliber to hold (or more appropriately, display) the fine threads. BT spent an afternoon touring and admiring the contents of Morton’s exquisite custom-designed closet.

THE CLOSET Dressed in her “everyday attire” — Ralph Lauren black pants, a white Brooks Brothers shirt (which she loves so much she buys them by the trunk load), a pink Alexander McQueen jacket and Louis Vuitton heels — Morton explains her vision for her closet.

“I wanted one big room,” says Morton, whose husband, builder/

It’s a place where I can hang out with my friends, drink some Champagne, and try on things,” she says.

Scarfs, necklaces and fascinators hang on the wall in Morton’s closet.

Her handbags have a cabinet of their own — as do her evening bags.

It has a large dressing room area, two glass shoecase cabinets and multiple sections of cabinets, shelves and clothing racks. Morton has the closet organized by type clothing and color.

Handcrafted custom cabinetry, gilded and beveled glass doors, crown molding, Venetian mirrors and a crystal chandelier add to the elegance of it all.

“It’s very feminine, very French,” says Morton, who wanted the closet to resemble a French boudoir.

In the center of the room is the sitting area — a luxurious dressing room where the style maven can enjoy her fashions.

“I’m back here a lot, it’s home to me,” she says. “When I come back from New York or a trip, the first thing I do is come to my closet.”

“My husband says my shoes are so beautiful, that they are works of art and they should be displayed,” says Morton. Valentino, Manolo Blahnik, Roger Vivier, Christian Louboutin and Chanel are a few of the brands that make up her collection.

HOW THE COUPLE MET:

Lieutenant Commander Ethan Rahn Biter and Molly Michael Klauber met in 2012. It all started with cheese at the Gulf Coast Cheese Fest, which was co-founded by Molly. Ethan and his family decided to partake in a whole day of eating cheese and drinking wine at the local festival. Molly greeted his family with grace, but little did she know who she was dealing with — a family full of surprises and good times.

The first surprise was a trip to Bern’s Steakhouse to celebrate Ethan’s brother, Jesse’s, birthday.

To cause the utmost embarrassment for Ethan, his family did not hold back. From rolls being thrown across the restaurant, to the manager politely asking Molly to “quiet her party down,” the typical first date was surely on the opposite end of the spectrum. At the end of the date, and with no stone left unturned, they both knew they had found love at first date.

THE PROPOSAL:

On June 23, Ethan and Molly flew down to Staniel Cay, Bahamas, for a trip on a private cruise.

One day while the other couples on the trip went for a mini fishing excursion, Ethan and Molly stayed behind and he asked her to join him on the bow of the boat so they could enjoy the beautiful sunset. When discussing their favorite moments of their relationship, Ethan noted that that exact moment was the ultimate. At that moment, he got down on one knee and proposed.

The couple will travel to southern France and southern Italy in September. However, to kickoff their first week as newlyweds, Molly, Ethan and 28 of their friends and family set sail on a post-wedding cruise.

FUN FACT:

The rehearsal dinner was a surprise to Ethan, who thought it was going to be at Polo Grill. However, friends and family surprised him at an airport hangar for a “flying” themed party. The staff was dressed as flight attendants, the food was themed around Daniel Bouloud (Ethan’s favorite chef), the bathrooms had signs that said the “mile high club” and beverage carts featured mini bottles of alcohol and more.

THE WEDDING AND RECEPTION:

led the bride and her father, Michael, down the aisle. Molly had given the groom a custom wood chip engraved in Morse code with “You are my Sunshine” and “I love you” to keep in his pocket the day of the wedding so he could “feel” her saying those things to him whenever he needed it. It tied into the “You are my Sunshine” played by the quartet during the wine ceremony. Following the ceremony, Molly and Ethan passed through a traditional sword arch.

Guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres — including a table of wheels of cheese (Molly’s favorite) made to look like wedding cakes — on the second tier of the courtyard. Dinner took place on the final tier of the courtyard, where guests finished the night dancing to the sounds of Serenade of Souls — after the couple cut the cake (with Ethan’s sword).
