he rehearsal room at Asolo Repertory Theatre’s Koski Center goes quiet. Amidst the final few weeks of rehearsal there’s no time for the production team or actors to slow down.

But suddenly, they pause. It happens when three imperative members of the cast — musicians Tim Grimm, Carmela Pedicini and Sara Moone — start playing one of the songs used in the production.

The trio perches on the back of a lumber-covered Hudson truck used as set piece. It’s as if the truck drove straight out of the 1930s Dust Bowl into the Koski rehearsal center and scenic shop, Oklahoma plates and all. Similarly, it’s as if the three musicians are Oakies themselves.

Pedicini percussively plucks her banjo. Moone wails on the fiddle and Grimm strums and finger picks his guitar. Their feet tap as somber yet hopeful American folk singing takes over the rehearsal room.

“We don’t want your handouts mister / We don’t want no charity / we want to work and stay together / and pick the fruit, land of the free,” they sing.

It’s more than just background music. The women’s moving, heartfelt harmony paired with Grimm’s rough melody portray another side to “The Grapes of Wrath” — the music becomes a character. The three musicians will provide music on stage to accompany the production as members of the cast. It runs through April 19 at Asolo Repertory Theatre.

They play poor migrant worker musicians fleeing the Dust Bowl in mid-1930s Oklahoma. They travel in the same party as the Joad family, on which the play centers.

Music was important to the migrants — no matter how bad life got, they continued singing, listening to music and performing around the campfire. It’s authentic and a natural expression of

emotion of the characters.

“Music is important to all of us all the time,” says Michael Donald Edwards, the director of the production and producing artistic director of Asolo Rep. “We express in music what we find difficult to express in life.”

The Joads head to California with the hope of finding work, and instead, find the Great Depression. They are faced with challenges and respond accordingly.

The music helps portray the characters’ internalizations.

“You see how the Joads respond and how their inner strengths keep them going both on the physical journey and in their hearts and minds,” Grimm says. “And, we do that with the music, too.”

In real life, Composer and Musical Director Tim Grimm is just as rural as the handful of characters he plays in “The Grapes of Wrath.”

He grew up in Southern Indiana down the road from fellow folkartist John Mellencamp.

Frank Galati won two Tony awards for his adaptation of “The Grapes of Wrath” from 1990. He directed the original production, and now it’s published in more than 10 languages and is performed all over the world as far as London, Iceland, Japan and Israel.

You live here, so why didn’t you direct it?

Michael Donald Edwards is the artistic director and he chose to direct it…I myself have done it

somewhat exhaustedly.

Have you been involved in the process?

I’ve had lots of conversations with Michael. I’ve talked to individual members of the cast about their roles, answered questions that have come up about the text and I have seen rehearsal….I’m kind of overwhelmed that it’s part of the season..and that a company as distinguished as Asolo Rep would be producing it.

Is there anything that you changed or anything that you’d like to change in your adapta-

The singer-songwriter-actor still lives in rural Indiana on 80 acres of half wooded land and half rolling hills with his family, three quarter horses, a dog and four cats. That is, when he’s not traveling the world as a musician or hanging out with his mentor and friend, fellow folk singer Ramblin’ Jack Elliott.

Elliott told him stories of the time he spent getting to know Woodie Guthrie as research for his composition.

Grimm is the only cast member of the production who was in the production in 2005. That year was the first time Edwards directed the play for both Syracuse Stage and Indiana Repertory Theatre in a joint production.

Edwards decided to employ a composer-actor-singer-songwriter to update the music to the production. Grimm was an actor occasionally working with Indiana Repertory Theatre (IRT). Edwards learned about Grimm through

the artistic director of IRT and listened to a few of his songs.

“As soon as I met him, I knew,” Edwards says of Grimm.

There had always been music in Frank Galati’s production, originally scored by Michael Smith.

Smith’s was more of an urban take to Grimm’s rural idea.

Grimm composed a few original songs for the production, hailing Woody Guthrie as his iconic muse. Guthrie sang many songs about his own Dust Bowl experience traveling with migrant workers to California. The score also includes some traditional folk songs.

Grimm changed his tour dates and took some time off from his schedule to work on and be in the Asolo Repertory Theatre production. Last April, Grimm came to Sarasota to help Edwards audition local and regional musicians to join the cast as his band.

No. It’s a piece that was made over a long, long time. Every time we did a production, there were changes. Its first performance was more than four hours long, so the first thing I did was prune, edit and remove characters and scenes to try and make it as streamlined, efficient and as quickly moving with a kind of imperative velocity…I’m happy with the shape of the script, and there are plenty of invitations (for the director) to make changes in terms of the use of music, scenery, lighting and so on. and Carmela Pedicini. They liked that they were already a local band, Passerine. Their harmonies already gelled.

In the Indiana/Syracuse production it had been a trio of all men without a violin. Edwards is thrilled with how the trio has turned out on stage.

“It’s so wonderful to have two women being the musicians,” Edwards says. “It sounds like a new score to me.”

Jamie Carter wears many hats, and he makes them, too Jamie Carter carries a cardboard copy-paper box overflowing with pink, zebra and other decorative fabric. On top of one side of the box, he gracefully balances a Styrofoam mannequin wig form. In his other arm is a hatbox. It’s after rehearsal at Sarasota Ballet, and he walks toward the screening room on the third floor of FSU Center for the Performing Arts. The Sarasota Ballet dancer unloads the box, and displays feathers, buttons and decorative odds and ends.

When Carter is not dancing, he’s a hobby milliner, or hat maker. Carter explains that it started in 2009, when Sarasota Ballet added “Paquita” to its program at the last minute. The costumes were ready, but the 14 headpieces still needed to be created. Carter volunteered for the job.

Since his first foray into hat making, he’s formalized his process. He’s self-taught, and he occasionally follows online tutorials or courses from hatacademy. com. He has a notebook full of sketches and notes on fabric.

“For me, it’s just a hobby,” he says. “I’d never stop dancing and just make hats all the time.”

He says sometimes there is a little snobbery in millinery. It goes above and beyond just attaching a few decorative pieces to a headband; pieces made in this style are called fascinators.

Millinary is a specific process.

It involves wetting and stretching material to the right shape to create a form, then adding wires and hand sewing. Carter pulls

Jamie Carter molds pleated crin he dyed black into a sculpture hat. out a few hat blocks and a green hat with a decorative flower on it to demonstrate. It looks as if it’s a hat you might find at a department store, but, in actuality, he made it from a $1.99 placemat and a fabric flower he dyed with teabags. When he first started creating hats, he used whatever he could find. Most of the time he will use traditional fabric used in millinery: veiling, buckram, sinamay and crin.

He continues making his hatinators as costume pieces for Sarasota Ballet. For the 2011 piece he choreographed for the Theatre of Dreams program, “Holiday Overture,” he made the female dancers little militaristic garrison hats. For the “John Ringling Circus Nutcracker,” he made a jeweled “Great Gatsby”Daisy-Buchanan-inspired headpiece for Mable Ringling.

His fans can’t get enough.

Principal Dancer Kate Honea has a handful of hats she wears.

Sarasota Ballet Board of Directors Chairwoman Hillary Steele had a few made for a party. A bunch of the female dancers wanted some to wear to a tea party. Carter’s making so many hats, he can’t keep up with all the supplies. He has a shipment of new material coming in, which he specially orders online.

“I wish I had some to show you, but I’m all out at the moment,” he says.

Fuzión Dance Artists conceptualize the art of couture

by Mallory Gnaegy | A&E Editor Fuzión Dance Artists are thrifty. Their first and primary focus has always been contemporary dance — not costumes.

They typically pull costume pieces from their own wardrobes or make something out of Goodwill finds. The first time Fuzión Dance Artists made costumes more of a priority is for its upcoming March 13 through March 16 “Dance Couture — Art Meets Dance” production.

The group worked with local artists to conceptualize the whole program.

The dancers have always had an interest in promoting their art in collaboration with visual artists. Head to an Art Center Sarasota opening, and you’ll probably see a few of the Fuzión Dance Artists dancing their way through exhibits. They also performed during the IceHouse’s Reimagining Georgia O’Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz exhibit. It makes sense that they’d work with artists to inspire their costuming.

The local Art Center Sarasota artists involved in creating the pieces in the art center’s March 28 Iconcept, a fashion show fundraiser, helped the process. They attended early rehearsals to help bounce around ideas. For instance, tribal dance choreography by Kira Blazek inspired earthy color pallets and tattered material. A piece by Alyson Dolan features choreography inspired by

Allyn Gallup exhibit displays homegrown talent “Made in Sarasota” is a simple and appropriate title for Allyn Gallup Contemporary Art’s most recent exhibit. On March 7, the gallery opened the exhibit featuring already established big names of Sarasota along with some of its up-and-coming talent.

The big names of internationally renowned Sarasota-based artists, as well as their quality of work and diversity of mediums, drew a crowd of more than 200 people throughout the evening.

The artists represented include Kim Anderson, Jean Blackburn, Jorge Blanco, Aaron Board, Tom Carabasi, Hugh Davies, Robert Farber, Nancy Hellebrand, Susan Klein, Dennis Kowal, Andrew Kuziak, George Pappas, Vicky Randall, Gayle Fulton Ross, Rob Tarbell and Susan Zukowsky. OPERA // Sarasota Opera’s ‘Jérusalem’ Few people have had the opportunity to see Verdi’s “Jérusalem.” Yet, if you were in the Sarasota Opera audience this past week, saw this rarely performed French opera and had that déjà-vu-all-over-again feeling, you were right. In 2011, you probably heard this Verdi work, set in Italy, sang in Italian and known as “I Lombardi.” Exactly the same?

No. But close enough to jar our memories and make us think we’re hearing double.

Just four years after Verdi’s success in Italy with “I Lombardi alla prima crociata,” Verdi, with some help from a pair of French librettists, did a massive reworking of the earlier opera and adapted it under the name “Jérusalem” for a premiere in Paris. Both operas deal with the first Crusade but, rather than recounting the Lombard’s connection, he gave it a Gallic perspective, changed some of the music, rewrote a bit of history and, voila, gave birth to a new(ish) opera.

To confuse the issue a bit more, Verdi also wrote an Italian version of the French “Jérusalem,” but it was the original French we heard this past weekend as conductor and Sarasota Opera Artistic Director Victor DeRenzi and Stage Director Martha Collins launched a new production as part of DeRenzi’s journey through his Verdi cycle.

You may not get too much real history from either “Jérusalem” or “I Lombardi,” but you certainly get a sense of the brutality and barbarism — on all sides — of the Crusades.

In “Jérusalem,” you also get a love story, treachery, mistaken identity, honor, deception and vengeance; all the things that make for great, grand opera.

But “Jérusalem” is more than grand opera.

It’s a paean to honor and faith. The plot takes twists and turns that are totally implausible but, because the music draws us in, we’re transported from 11th century France

We become the royals of Toulouse, the Muslims of Ramla, the Christians of the first Crusade and the believers Verdi sculpts us to be. He also gives us glimpses of things to come, as in the “Ave Maria” he’s given Jérusalem’s heroine, Helene, which predates Desdemona’s “Ave Maria” in his “Otello.” And he looks back at bit to “Nabucco” and its heroic choruses for many of the ensembles in this piece.

“Jérusalem” is about heroism and its characters are truly heroic, starting with the chorus, which is a character in itself.

Whether they’re the men and women of Toulouse or the Arabs of Ramla, the chorus is an entity that carries “Jérusalem” along, powerfully persuading us to hang on their

every note. From the second act chorus that prays to God to find a way back from the desert to France, to the heroic sound of the final “Jérusalem,” we’re loyal to this group because they sing with such power and persuasiveness.

Along with the chorus, Verdi’s orchestra also plays a role of such importance, this opera wouldn’t be what it is without it.

DeRenzi drew magnificent sounds from the trumpets and winds, making us forget, at times, that this was an opera and not a symphony. Verdi’s orchestration calls for wondrous sounds from the flutes and other winds, emulating the France of the Crusaders’ dreams. He also uses the trumpets as a call to arms, which the most peaceloving civilian would find hard to resist. Best of all, he uses silences; moments when the soloists and choruses sing without accom-

paniment, emphasizing their characters and spiritual bereavement.

The large cast is also heroic with the stalwart Young Bok Kim, as Roger, the Count’s brother, who’s responsible for all the chaos that ensues in the four acts, leading the way with his resonant bass sounding better than we’ve ever heard him before. Whether he’s clad as the nobleman who desires his own niece and tries to kill for her hand, or a hermit seeking forgiveness for his sins, he’s amazingly believable in a role that has little credibility.

Danielle Walker, as Helene, is the epitome of a strong, magnificent woman who will go to any lengths to stand by her man, even when the world stands against him.

She seems to grow with the part, starting as a pretty young lady in love and winding up as a pillar of strength and faith, a force neither Christians nor Muslims can destroy. Her voice becomes more and more powerful as her characterization grows, making her one of the true heroes of this opera.

Matthew Hanscom makes a vocally and dramatically compelling Count of Toulouse, as does Jeffrey Beruan in his role as Ademar de Montheil, the Papal Legate.

Heath Huberg, as Gaston, is dramatically persuasive but vocally inconsistent, perhaps because of opening-night jitters. Studio Artists Jon Jurgens, Ivan Conrad, William Roberts, Keith Brown and Catheryne Shuman and Apprentice Artist Gage Herrmann handled smaller roles well.

“Jérusalem” is as much a pageant as it is an opera, with each scene unfolding as another unbelievable but gripping chapter in a panorama that comes together in a musically blinding finale. Martha Collins’ staging does as much as can be done with the story, leaving the music to weave its magic. Ken Yunker’s lighting plays an important part in transfusing the sets by Jeffrey W. Dean with life. And Roger Bingaman’s work with the splendid chorus was transfixing. But the real hero of this rare epic is Verdi, a true man of the theater.

Scheherazade bet her life on her abilities to charm, seduce and entertain the Sultan, who threatened to kill her unless she kept him diverted.

The composer gave every instrument in the orchestra a chance to weave a spell, and Chen, an animated conductor, knows how to pull musical colors from the orchestra without getting in the way of what the composer intended. Daniel Jordan’s superb reading of the violin solos made for some of the finest, lushest playing he’s done.

“Scheherazade” may be a brilliant piece of program music, but it’s even more of a concerto; it puts the spotlight on almost every principal player in the orchestra, and, if we had the space in this column, we’d name every name. The playing was sensational, and Chen gave solo bows to every principal, followed by a nod to entire sections at the conclusion of the performance. The tumultuous, rock star ovation at the end, was certainly deserved.

The Sarasota Orchestra played a program this past weekend filled with so much color, it was like visiting the Louvre. And, although the title of the series was “Exotic Stories,” it was more like pictures at an exhibition. Our tour was conducted by Mei-Ann Chen, who returned to the Sarasota Orchestra’s podium for the first time since her initial appearance here a couple of years ago.

The first gallery was brimming with oriental art and featured a five-minute work by the prolific Chinese-Canadian composer, An-Lun Huang. Although he’s not yet that well known in the West, Huang has written 20 symphonies and almost a dozen operas.

His “Saibei Dance,” which is a brief but energetic segment from his “Saibei Suite” No. 2, sounds like Bizet and Borodin meeting on the Steppes of Central Asia. It’s picturesque, exciting and the perfect overture to introduce the colorful work that followed on our musical exhibition.

Maurice Ravel was, along with his other French friends of the Impressionist period, the Claude Monet of the music world. His piano concerto in G major is filled with intriguing overlays of color that have both Asian and American influences. JeanPhilippe Collard, the soloist in the work, tinted the music with textures from crystalline tinkles to percussive, hard-driving strokes, while Chen sensitively sculpted orchestral responses. From the opening clap of the slap-stick to the Gershwinesque melodies of the first movement, Chen and Collard dug into the brilliant colors Ravel wove to give us an exhilarating reading of the outer movements.

The adagio section was like a wash of oil paints Monet might have used to make an aural painting of his water lilies. Gentle but seductive, Collard was both soloist and accompanist as Ravel’s pianistic sounds enhanced the solos in the orchestra.

Jerome Robbins knew what he was doing when he turned this great piano concerto into a ballet and Collard, with Chen, danced it beautifully.

The third, and final, gallery of art took us to Sinbad’s sea and the old festivals of Baghdad as Rimsky-Korsakov portrayed the tale of “Scheherazade” in the guise of a concerto for orchestra. Pacing plays an important role in storytelling, and

he Sarasota School of Architecture was a male world, driven by large egos out to make their way in the world. But it did have one female member — Lu Andrews. As the secretary of Ralph Twitchell’s (he was the acknowledged founder of the highly regarded style), Andrews served as co-worker, sounding board and den mother to the group of ambitious young architects.

Andrews was an unusual woman for the time. Beautiful and impeccably dressed, she would drive around Sarasota in her sports car, her hair elegantly wrapped in a flowing silk scarf. She was a single mother and the intellectual equal of the guys in the office. Her sophisticated, avant-garde tastes were totally in sync with theirs.

Still, her name would probably be lost to history, as most secretaries’ names are, if not for the extraordinary house the Twitchell firm designed for her. Usually acknowledged to be the work of Ken Warriner, Twitchell’s chief designer at the time, the home was completed in 1959. Andrews lived there until she moved to a nursing home in 1997. In the years since then, the home has been restored, studied, photographed and written about; today it is generally acknowledged as one the most iconic examples of the style, and certainly the best preserved.

Sarasota’s artistic development. *** It’s a small house, barely 900 square feet. Located in an out-of– the-way neighborhood just north of downtown, it overlooks a pond surrounded by oak trees. Birds of all sorts gather around the water and their cries often fill the house, bringing nature inside, not just visually but aurally, as well.

This combination of indoor and outdoor spaces was crucial to the Sarasota School, but the home showcases examples of its other principles, as well. There are clerestory windows in most rooms, which raise the ceilings a foot or so and allow a band of light to enter — plus glimpses of nature. The walls are stacked concrete block, cypress paneling or glass. Classic terrazzo floors, in perfect condition, continue out to the screened porch.

There are four rooms, plus a dining area, and none of them could be described as large. Yet, through clever design, the home feels much more spacious than

it actually is. The screened porch more than doubles the size of the living room, and each of the two bedrooms has a wall of glass that opens to a narrow screened patio, thus enlarging the space visually — and, once again, bringing in the outdoors. Even the tiny dining room has a wall of glass that makes it seem much larger.

Built-ins are everywhere, and they are all original to the house.

In the living room there is a lowslung cabinet — complete with slots for record albums — and a freestanding black metal fireplace.

The porch has bench-style sofas and a water feature — a small rock-and-pebble-filled pond set into one corner. In the bedrooms, each headboard is built into the wall, along with a wall-hung teak credenza and the original shelves.

The galley kitchen maintains its original design, though the cabinets have been resurfaced and a contemporary backsplash was added by a previous owner, an opera singer who loved to cook. Both bathrooms have classic 1950s tile

— one in blue, one in a pumpkinbeige — and the fixtures are original and in great shape. The one exception is the sink in the hall bath.

It has been sheathed in stainless steel and suggests the lavatory on an airliner, a touch that fits in perfectly with the home’s 20th-century aesthetic. *** Credit for the home’s remarkable state of preservation goes to Sarasotans Lou and Kim Salvatori.

They came across the property in 1998, about a year after Andrews moved out, and they immediately fell in love with the place. It was covered with vegetation and starting to deteriorate, but, with a great deal of perseverance and sweat equity, they soon had it back in shape.

The changes they made were few but necessary. A new roof allowed them to add up-to-date wiring and central air conditioning — plus seven small skylights.

They installed a panel under the breakfast bar where a flat-screen TV can be hidden away when not in use. Perhaps the biggest change was to replace the jalousie windows with clear glass.

But the spirit of the house remained intact. Kim Salvatori even refinished the dining room set, a classic design by Paul McCobb, by scraping off the rust and repainting the legs black. She reupholstered the chairs in period fabric she found at a garage sale.

For their efforts, the Salvatoris were winners in a competition sponsored by Metropolitan Home magazine.

Several people have owned the house since the Salvatoris, and it is currently on the market once again. The listing agent is Martie Lieberman of Premier Sotheby’s, a local legend when it comes to Sarasota School architecture. She was one of the first to publicize Sarasota’s unique mid-century

homes and has become an acknowledged expert in the field.

She reports already getting inquiries and visits from people all over the world, due to her email list of 3,500.

“It’s the perfect home for a retired architect,” she reports, and several have seen the home in person. “It would also be terrific for a young professional.” A modern day version of Andrews.

Everyone involved is hoping the new owner, whoever it may be, will keep it just as it is. It is one of those rare homes where a change, even a small one, would throw everything off.

“Leave it alone!” Lieberman says. “It’s not going to get any better.”

It’s both frozen in time, yet timeless — like a perfect work of art.

Ambrish Piare the proprietor of Jalea (formerly known as Sangria), has not only updated its atmosphere — he’s updated the menu.

The biggest change is the addition of Peruvian cuisines.

Many of the Peruvian recipes come from Peruvian General Manager Diego Malatesta’s grandma. This is a place to go if you haven’t ever tried Peruvian food, but might not be for the true-blooded Peruvian.

One of the best offerings on the tapas menu is the Leche de Tigre (or Tiger’s Milk). It is a Peruvian legend that the juice cures hangovers and also acts as an aphrodisiac — it’s not uncommon to drink the remaining juice. And this is the juice you’ll want to finish.

This version is a creamy blend of white fish, cuzco (Peruvian large-kernelled corn) and onions in a cilantro- and limeinfused juice.

Javier’s Restaurant and Wine Bar’s Ceviche de Mixto, $10 Lima-born Javier Arana put Peruivan food on the map in Sarasota. He’s run Javier’s for 26 years, back in the time when people were scared to eat raw fish. If you’re coming from Siesta Key Beach, his joint is the place to grub.

Arana grew up in a family of restaurateurs and has been in kitchens since he was a child. So, the three ceviches on his menu are authentic and just like home.

The Ceviche Mixto has shrimp, tuna and scallops marinated in slivers of red onion, garlic, lime juice, cilantro and aji pepper. It’s citrus and cilantro flavor doesn’t overpower the dish. It’s a simpler flavor that highlights the tender and large chunks of fish.

If you want authentic, this is the place to go. You might even see Chef Darwin Santa Maria of Darwin’s on 4th or the wife and children of one of the Peruvian chefs at Selva eating here.

Owner Fernando Palomino prides himself in honoring his native country. Every one of his employees, all of the wine, all of his marketing and websites are Peruvian — even the white fish, corn and pepper comes from Peru. Inkanto, which means Inca charm, offers six kinds of ceviche. Be prepared to have a short wait — it’s all made fresh to order. And, you can order it as spicy as you prefer.

The Ceviche de Inkanto is made with corvine (white sea bass imported from Peru) and yellow peppers. While you’re at Inkanto, try a Peruvian wine. It’s the only place you’ll find it in Sarasota.

magine this situation: You’re just shaking out your towel from a long day at the beach.

You have a sunkissed glow and maybe even your nose and cheeks are a little pink. The sun has made you work up quite an appetite, and, after dusting the white quartz sand from your toes and feet, you decide you’ll go out for a bite. This is when it’s best to have ceviche.

The historically South American dish features raw fish marinated in citrus juice. Though “raw” might scare a few people away, the acid in the juice changes the physical properties of the fish so its texture feels as if it has been cooked with heat. Ceviche is best after a long day in the sun served with a cold beer, pisco sour or chilled sauvignon blanc. Here are some places we recommend:

It was a beautiful day for a polo match, which was included in the all-day “Polo Under the Palms” event Saturday, March 8.

Guests dressed “casually chic” gathered at Sarasota Polo Club to enjoy the sport and support Center for Building Hope and MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Gates opened at 3 p.m. and guests enjoyed the camaraderie of friends while watching the finals of the USPA sanctioned Polo Under the Palms 12-goal tournament. Following the tournament, Regent was presented with the trophy and guests gathered in the pavilion to enjoy hors d’oeuvres and cocktails while listening to live music by Ben Hammond.

enior Friendship Centers’ fifth annual “Madcap Evening” on March 4 more than lived up to its name. Chairwoman Debbie Frank headed up a team of co-chairs: Ingrid Bookbiner-Keating, JoAnn Nevins and Sunny Flynn and silent auction chair Joan Arnold. The theme was “Musicale & Musings,” and Sarasota Opera studio singers and the Tierra Nueva Band delivered the first and Richard Langdon Cook, author of “The Bright Side of Life,” the second. Les McCurdy entertained following comments about the Centers by Chef Paul Mattison and event founder Harold Ronson, who mentioned Kitty Carlisle. McCurdy got a big laugh by noting that only in Sarasota would an audience even know who she was, and an even bigger one with a tale about seniors, sex and an armless rocking chair …
