+ Kiwanis welcomes new members The Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key welcomed four new members to the club at its Dec. 5 breakfast meeting: Dr. Michael O’Neil, owner of Longboat Key Dental; Michael Garey, owner of Lazy Lobster; Cedars resident George Knight; and Country Club Shores resident Armando Linde.

Kiwanis Club President Richard Crawford welcomed the new members while also praising the club’s newfound ability to attract younger members.

“We love our senior members but welcome younger members who will be the foundation and drive of this club’s efforts for the community moving forward,” Crawford said.

Word for 2014: revelation Happy New Year.

Let’s hope it is.

Last year at this time, we wrote of our tradition of adopting a word for the year. It was “freedom.”

Our wish was that Americans would make “freedom” the one word to live by in 2013.

The one concept to guide our society — freedom for the individual, economic freedom … the symbol and belief in freedom that burns with Lady Liberty.

We know, of course, 2013 wasn’t about freedom for anyone. At all.

But alas, never give in.

This year, our word is “revelation.” Our hope is that a wave of revelation sweeps over Americans. That they have a lasting, lightning-bolt revelation that the current state MATT of the “State” — that is, structures of governWALSH ment intervening in our lives — is taking us to an unavoidable, destructive end of what we all believe this country stands for. We may think we are free, certainly we are more free than most around the world. But when you take the power of the State today and view it in the context of the past 80 years — from 1932 to today — and think of it in the context of history, i.e. the Roman Empire, it’s difficult to be optimistic that in our lifetimes the power of the State will diminish and freedom will increase.

Sorry. All that sounds way too doom-y and despressing, hardly the way to begin a New Year. This is the time when you want to start fresh and be energized, optimistic and make a go of it.

And we’ll all be that way for a few weeks.

But there’s this thing called human nature that makes it difficult for people to change their ways, difficult to change course. We usually don’t do that until the pain is too great.

That’s why Americans need a revelation.

They need a voice and vision in the sky that says: “What shall it be: the ‘State’ or freedom?

Free trade versus coercion

You can see that choice vividly over the past three months. Consider the scenarios of shopping for Christmas and Hanukkah gifts versus health insurance.

Say you wanted to buy a frame for a treasured photograph to give to a loved one. You had free choices. You could make the frame yourself, or you could find someone who specializes in making frames.

If you chose the latter, you found that frame maker on your own volition, and you negotiated a peaceful, uncoerced trade with him. He agreed to make your frame, and you agreed to compensate him at a level that was satisfactory to you and the frame maker.

In the old, old days, you may have paid for that frame with a good or service. But today, you agreed to exchange dollars — a universal medium of exchange that has a recognized value.

Observe in this transaction you didn’t need a government intervenor to coerce or motivate or arrange this peaceful exchange.

You and the frame maker acted freely.

In fact, you did that with every gift you purchased. You made a fair, peaceful, free exchange. This was free trade, free enterprise, free-market, laissez-faire capitalism at work. And look how orderly it was.

Now contrast that with the experience millions of Americans have had trying to secure, hold onto or buy health insurance over the past three months. There is no need to go into the details of this. But what’s the obvious difference between this and buying a frame? The State.

The State has thrust itself and its coercive, freedom-sucking powers into this transaction. And the result is oh, so predictable.

Albert Jay Nock, a 1930s and 1940s journalist and author, even wrote as far back as 1935 in “Our Enemy the State: “State power has an unbroken record of inability to do anything efficiently, economically, disinterestedly or honestly.”

And even then, he wrote what is still so true today: “Yet when the slightest dissatisfaction arises over any exercise of social power, the aid of the agent least qualified to give aid is immediately called for.”

If something goes wrong in banking, what do we do? We call the State to intervene.

Wrote Nock: “Let the State, which never has shown itself able to keep its own finances from sinking promptly into the slough of misfeasance, wastefulness and corruption, intervene to ‘supervise’ or ‘regulate’ the whole body of banking-practice, or even take it over entire.”

“Ever since society has existed,” wrote Herbert Spencer, a noted, mid-19th century British philosopher, “disappointment has been preaching, ‘Put not your trust in legislation’; and yet the trust in legislation seems hardly diminished.”

Just look at today, a century and a half after Spencer wrote that.

The State perverts the law

Obviously, we never learn. Not from the Romans. Nor from our own forefathers.

James Madison worried in 1794 about what he called “the old trick of turning every contingency into a resource for accumulating force in the government.” Even then, it was an “old” habit — unlimited expansion of the power of the State; using the power of the state to dictate, coerce and force behavior as the political class sees fit; using the power of the State to confiscate the fruits of labor to redistribute to favored groups or to make everyone more materially equal.

French economist-writer Frederic Bastiat wrote in the mid-1800s that our forefathers created our laws “to protect persons, liberties and properties; to maintain the right of each, and to cause justice to reign over us

ARE WE ROME? Lawrence Reed, president of the Foundation for Economic Education, wrote last June an essay entitled, “Are We Rome?”

While discussing parallels between the U.S. and Roman republic, Reed ultimately warned: “No people who have lost their character have kept their liberties.” Additional excerpts: “Rome collapsed because of a fundamental change in ideas on the part of the Roman people — ideas which relate primarily to personal responsibility and the source of personal income.

In the early days of greatness, Romans regarded themselves as their chief source of income. By that I mean each individual looked to himself — what he could acquire voluntarily in the marketplace — as the source of his livelihood.

Rome’s decline began when the people discovered another source of income: the political process — the State. In short, it was a character issue.

“Rome rose to greatness on the pillars of strong personal character. It foundered when its people sacrificed character for less noble things like power and the false, temporary ‘security’ of a handout.

“When Romans abandoned selfresponsibility and self-reliance, and began to vote themselves benefits, to use government to rob Peter and pay Paul, to put their hands into other people’s pockets, to envy and covet the productive and their wealth, they turned down a fateful, destructive path. As the late Dr. Howard E. Kershner put it, ‘When a self-governing people confer upon their government the power to take from some and give to others, the process will not stop until the last bone of the last taxpayer is picked bare.’”

But he also wrote then that the political classes in France did just the opposite with the law — perverted it for the expansion of their and the State’s power. And this has continued in the march of time in Europe, here, everywhere.

In the United States, the mushrooming of the State occurred in 1932 with the election of Franklin Roosevelt. He decreed then, for the first time in our nation’s history, that the State owes its citizens a living. Ever since, and regardless of what political party is in power, the reach of the State has continued to spread.

Oh, there have been periods of recession, of slowing its growth. But we have just experienced under Barack Obama an expansion of the State that rivals, if not eclipses, that of Franklin Roosevelt.

Perhaps the most important point to remember about this is that whenever the State expands its power, your freedom and power are correspondingly reduced.

You would think this might send alarm bells through the American populace. But what’s even more alarming is it doesn’t.

As Nock wrote in 1935, Americans — especially every one receiving money from the government, more than 50% of the American populace today — have become conditioned to having the State intervene in everything; to the majority, it’s normal and expected.

Sure, there are a few Ted Cruzes, Marco Rubios, Tom Coburns, Scott Walkers and Rick Scotts trying as best they can to reverse our nation’s course. Some thought the Tea Party might bring the tipping point, but it didn’t. Another taxpayer revolution in America? “Even Lenin acknowledged that a revolution is impossible anywhere until the military and police forces become disaffected; and the last place to look for that, probably, is here,” wrote Nock in 1935.

Indeed, even today that’s true.

What can be done?

It was probably a mistake to read Nock’s “Our Enemy the State” on the precipice of 2014. He was an astute observer of early and modern civilizations in his day. And so much of what he wrote in the 1930s and 1940s is still as relevant and as applicable today as it was then. And that is concerning.

In the end, Nock was not hopeful: “One asks,” he wrote, “what can be done against the State’s progress in self aggrandizement? Simply nothing … Nothing can be done.

“What we and our more nearly immediate descendants shall see is a steady progress in collectivism running off into a military despotism of a severe type. Closer centralization; a steadily growing bureaucracy; State power and faith in State power increasing; social power and faith in social power diminishing; the State absorbing a continually larger proportion of the national income; production languishing; the State in consequence taking over one ‘essential industry’ after another, managing them with ever-increasing corruption, inefficiency and prodigality, and finally resorting to a system of forced labor.

“Then at some point in this progress, a collision of State interests, at least as general as violent as that which occurred in 1914, will result in an industrial and financial dislocation too severe for the asthenic social structure to bear; and from this the State will be left to ‘the rusty death of machinery,’ and the casual anonymous forces of dissolution will be supreme.”

Eighty years have passed since Nock made that prediction. Clearly, his Armageddon for the United States hasn’t occurred — yet. But it’s probably worth noting, it took 500 years for the Fall of the Roman Empire republic.

We’re not quite halfway there. So there is still time to prove Nock wrong. That’s why Americans need a revelation in 2014. It took us 233 years to rise and fall and rise and fall.

On the Roman timetable, we still have time to turn it around.

We need a revelation.

“I love working with kids,” says Echegaray, now a sophomore. “I thought it would be different working with different kinds of kids, and it was a new experience for me.”

The class is run through Face Autism, an organization that provides sensory-friendly activities and classes for children with autism and support and referral services to their families.

On the first day of her freshman year, Suncoast Polytechnical High School student Erika Echegaray faced a decision. The school requires its students to accumulate 100 volunteer hours before graduation, and she was trying to decide how to best earn the hours. She knew she loved working with children, so she began searching for the right fit.

She discovered an opportunity on You’dBePerfectForThis.org, which was seeking volunteers to help teach an art class to children with autism

children express themselves and strengthen their imaginations in a fun and safe atmosphere. Projects help improve flexibility in thinking and cater to each child to stimulate his or her senses.

“I think it’s something maybe they want to do,” she says. “Most kids like doing art, but even if they don’t, they can just have fun with their friends.

These kids are just fun, and they’re a joy; I love them so much.”

Echegaray loves the opportunity to work with the students, and she wishes more people her age would get involved as volunteers.

“It’s a good experience in life to do this,” she says. “If you’ve never experienced working with kids like this, then I think you should do it.”

HELLO, FORMER NEIGHBOR 2:27 p.m. — 600 block of Buttonwood Drive. Disturbance. A man was watering his plants when his former neighbor drove by twice, sticking up his middle finger both times. The man drove after him the second time to write down his license plate number. Police couldn’t find an updated address or phone number for the former neighbor.

5:27 a.m. — 6900 block of Poinsetta Ave. Suspicious Circumstance. Officers checked out reports from two separate callers who said they heard a woman screaming while running down the street. The sound was possibly caused by fighting animals or peacocks.

10:31 p.m. — 6300 block of Gulfside Road. Disturbance. A couple started banging and kicking on the front door. After police found the pair, the man said they stopped at the home because his girlfriend wanted to visit her friend. After police spoke to the couple for a few minutes, a woman walked outside and said, “I wasn’t buying any dope.”

1:57 a.m. — 3400 block of GMD. Domestic Disturbance. A woman argued with her drunken husband and woke him up after he fell asleep to continue the argument. He woke up, went to the bathroom to vomit, then tried to go back to sleep, but she wanted closure and tried to get him to talk. He then hit her on her head, causing her to fall into the closet. The man said he was defending himself. He was arrested for domestic battery.

11:41 p.m. — 100 block of GMD. Traffic Violation. Police observed a man parked on the sidewalk with the engine running.

When police asked for his driver’s license, the man looked disoriented and was obviously sweating. After being monitored by firefighter/paramedics and noting that he drank cooking sherry by mistake, he took a cab home.

A 5-foot-4-inch, dark-skinned, black-haired man wearing a dayglow orange thong who spoke with an accent sat next to a woman on the beach and asked her to take several pictures of him. She felt uncomfortable and asked another beachgoer to walk her home.

The man admitted to pointing a spray bottle filled with vinegar at the woman because the couple blocked his car in with their motorcycles. Police gave him a trespass warning.

4:58 p.m. — 3400 block of GMD. Suspicious Person. A man pulled his family’s car next to another vehicle to park at a beach access and saw a man inside brushing his teeth who then became verbally aggressive.

The man who matched the description said he hadn’t spoken to anyone but possibly someone heard him singing a song and didn’t like the lyrics.

YOU CAN’T STAND UNDER MY UMBRELLA-ELLA-ELLA 2:03 p.m. — 3200 block of GMD. Civil Disturbance. A woman was laying out on the beach under her umbrella and went back inside her condo for a half-hour but returned to find her umbrella missing. She then found a man and woman laying under her umbrella to the south of where she had left it. The man said he had just borrowed it and offered her $5 for it. Police suggested the man and woman move to the public beach approximately 500 feet away.

AUG. 7 GIRLS INTERRUPTED 1:10 p.m. — 2000 block of GMD. Domestic Violence. A 22-year-old man got into an argument with his father about girls he had met at a bar during a cab ride back to their vacation rental. When they arrived, the man jumped out, grabbed his father from behind and began choking him. His father said his son drank too much and that the girls his son met were going to take his money, but his son kept screaming that he’d ruined his chance with the girls. The man was arrested and taken to jail.

OCT. 2 LAID-BACK WORKER 1:02 p.m. — 600 block of Spanish Drive N. Suspicious Circumstance. A woman

8:31 p.m. — 600 block of Longboat Club Road. Suspicious Person. A man with a German accent was looking for his shirt and kept scratching his head with a piece of driftwood. He sternly said that he didn’t drink when someone offered him a beverage and kept walking south on the beach.

NOV. 8 YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH 6:52 p.m. — 5400 block of GMD. Public Service. A woman who’s renting on the Key said her condo in Chicago flooded in what could be a set-up by her homeowners association to make money selling wood flooring. No Realtor will sell the condo, possibly because they’re in on a conspiracy to keep her in Chicago where “they” can keep an eye on her because she knows the truth.

A cab driver in Chicago and the driver of a black Honda near her rental home could also be reporting her movements to the association.

Civil Disturbance. A Sarasota couple got in a dispute with a Longboat Key woman over the removal of cabinets from the woman’s home. The Key woman said the Sarasota woman threatened to break her hip. The Sarasota woman had already told police she hopes the Key woman breaks her hip and said she was not threatening the other woman but does believe in karma.

alking through Regina Gurland’s front door, you know you’re in an artist’s home. From the handmade ceramic lamps to the colorful-tile coffee table, it’s obvious Gurland is far from your average 96-year-old.

Originally from New Neighborhood: York, Gurland was busy Sleepy raising a child, taking Lagoon care of the house and working as a school Your neighbor since: 1976 lunch director, but she still felt there was a gap in her life. Her husband worked in the city and was only able to come home on the weekends.

“I was starting to think there was more to life than that,” Gurland said. “I was getting a little worried about myself.”

She saw an ad one morning for clay classes at South Hampton University and decided to give it a try. Although she had dabbled with other hobbies, such as photography, clay was the one thing that stuck.

While taking classes, Gurland was invited to feature her work in a student show.

Her teacher insisted she enter a piece.

“When you do something yourself, you don’t place the same value on it as some-

one else would,” said Gurland. “I didn’t see anything at all in the pieces I made, but the teacher put one in the show, and it won first place.”

With newfound confidence in her work, Gurland started working with clay every day. She bought a children’s play wheel and set up a small workstation in the corner of her kitchen. Armed with an endless supply of clay and creativity, she soon became known for her texturized pieces and ceramic woks. She molds each piece together by hand; she enjoys the range of freedom and one-of-a-kind quality that method offers.

Her art took her all over the world to shows in places such as Iceland and Japan, but when her son bought land on Longboat Key more than 30 years ago, Gurland saw an opportunity. About a week later, she, too, owned a lot on Longboat Key — right next-door to her son. She built a house with room for a studio and later welcomed her 5-year-old shih tzu, Dusty.

“If I didn’t have clay or Dusty, I wouldn’t be here,” she says. “As you get older, it gets lonesome. And you need something. You really do.”

A home in Country Club Shores tops all transactions in this week’s real estate. Michele and Douglas McNeill, of Longboat Key, sold their home at 620 Bowsprit Lane to Coffeeville Ltd. for $4.3 million. Built in 2001, it has four bedrooms, five-anda-half baths, a pool and 6,918 square feet of living area.

Jack Goldsmith III, of Newton, Mass., sold his Unit 12-C condominium at 2425 Gulf of Mexico Drive to Eva Kendeffy, of Longboat Key, for $625,000. Built in 1973, it has two bedrooms, two baths and 1,470 square feet of living area. It previously sold for $55,800 in 1973.

He composes music, produces video, makes large-scale installations, creates prints, showcases alternative forms of portraiture and hosts a variety of other works in all forms and disciplines. Plus, he has a heavy focus on collaborative performance — it’ll be something we’ve never seen. To coincide with the exhibit, there will also be a variety of performances by artists with whom he likes to work.

Gioachino Rossini wrote one of the most familiar operatic tunes in the world that would be reproduced in popular culture from everything from the Looney Tunes to “Mrs. Doubtfire.” You’ve heard “Figaro, Figaro, Figaro” and “la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la”— but that isn’t the only thing going for this opera.

It’s only two acts, it’s a comedy and it’s of the most beloved operas in the world. So much so, that Figaro stars in two other operas. He’s a barber who goes way beyond a shave and a haircut to help two people fall in love — of course, there’s a lot more drama involved.

“The Barber of Seville” is great for both opera beginners and veterans. If you’re still unsure, just trust me — I love it, and I’m in my 20s!

She’s extremely talented, which is apparent in how she leads the orchestra to play music you don’t just listen to but also feel like you’re a part of. It’s the kind of depth and excitement you have to experience for yourself. And, for the upcoming program, the soloist in this program’s Mozart concerto, violinist Ray Chen, is supposed to be just as electric.

If you haven’t jumped on the Tali bandwagon yet, this would be a great performance to attend.

So says the MacArthur Fellows Program of 2013 that awarded the composer-pianist one of its 24 genius grants. He was previously awarded the Greenfield Prize at the Hermitage Artist Retreat, which is a $30,000 prize in the form of a commission for a piece he had two years to write.

He wrote it specifically for wind quintet Imani Winds and pianist Cory Smythe. It’s a piece called “Turbulence” that pays tribute to the Gulf Coast. The performance will be in collaboration with La Musica Chamber Music Festival, which means you’ll also be able to sit in on a rehearsal or attend a “Meet the Composer” lecture, too. He’s stirred up quite the publicity this year, and if you’re a chamber-music fan — this is a do-not miss.

Frank Galati won two Tony Awards in 1990 for his adaptation and direction of “The Grapes of Wrath,” which was a book that won a Pulitzer Prize in its time. You can’t go wrong with two Tony’s and a Pulitzer, right?

Asolo’s producing artistic director, Michael Donald Edwards, will direct the production. It’s about social justice and passion following the Joad family as they lose their farm and head west for better opportunity, yet find the Great Depression instead.

But, even if I didn’t, this pick would be on my list. First of all, it’s at Van Wezel, which means I’m not the only one who thinks it will be something special — there’s going to be a big crowd. But, more importantly, you’ll see Sarasota Jewish Chorale,

Sarasota Young Voices, Booker High music and dance programs, Sarasota-Manatee Dance Alliance and The Chroma Quartet all in one spot. Now, The Chroma Quartet alone is a group to keep your eye on in 2014 — these guys (and gal) have something special. This multimediadance-voice-and-string collaboration is sure to be moving because it’s about facing adversity.

The Chroma Quartet strings together an instrumental ensemble They said it was supposed to be a one-time performance, the four members of The Chroma Quartet explain as they sit in their rehearsal space in the family room of Christopher and Jennifer Takeda’s new home. The violin-playing couple makes up half of the group; the other half consists of cellist Abraham Feder and violist Michael McClelland. The musicians reminisce about the fridgid day (at least for Sarasota) that propelled the quartet into existence.

It was November 2008, and they played on the concrete slab that would eventually become Manatee Performing Arts Center.

The performance, appropriately named “Unfinished Spaces,” was a fundraiser for the building before it had heat, a stage, lighting, or even walls. Because of that day, the group started getting calls for other performances, but its members already realized they had something special. The group gelled and discovered they sounded pretty good. There wasn’t a lot of stopping to work out musical details; the discussion was minimal and not too much work.

“There’s lots of things you don’t have to talk about, and you just understand what the other person is trying to do or say,” explains Feder about the group dynamic.

“It felt really good,” says Christopher Takeda.

“Organic is a good word,” Jennifer Takeda says.

It’s that level of energy we put into it,” explains McClelland. tences, cracking jokes and playfully picking on each other. They started as friends, and the experience has brought them even closer — they get together for dinners and spend time socially.

The group picked up speed last season — it played four concerts, including a three-concert series at First Church. This season, it’ll double that. The publicity has been word of mouth — the quar-

tet members didn’t expect anyone to show up to their April 2 concert (the last in the 2012 series), and 170 came. For four musicians well known in the orchestral community, it’s no wonder the fan base is growing so rapidly. But, the intent is for the music to sell itself.

“We formed this group because it’s musically gratifying,” Jennifer Takeda says. “We enjoy making music together and putting out a

product we’re proud of.”

That pride is audible in the music. You can hear the camaraderie in the give-and-take between the musicians’ highlighted segments of music. They give nods to each other’s talents and visions, and because of this, they offer something fresh and energetic: They aren’t a stuffy chamber quartet.

It makes sense that they don’t want to play weddings or free-

lance gigs. They don’t want to play the luncheons that accompany the big series in town; they want to play as a highlighted group on the big series. They’re just as good as some of the international quartets that come to play in the area.

But, the most humble part about them is their desire to champion Sarasota. They don’t want to play elsewhere. They value the audience, and its support.

“The Sarasota audience is welleducated and savvy about arts and culture, and…” Michael McClelland says as Jennifer Takeda chimes in.

“And, we’re giving them what we think they deserve,” she says.

All four members nod in agreement.

“Everyone,” Michael McClelland says, rattling off a list of area groups such as Gloria Musicae and Key Chorale, “has their own musical identity and I think we’re looking to take a place at that table.”

Hart’s battle scene is absolutely clever. With larger-than-life, wind-up robotic mice, gangster mice and clowns (instead of soldiers), the battle scene takes on a whole new meaning.

The gangster mice, led by Learned as the Mouse King, perform a version of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” dance before taking on the clowns, led by The Nutcracker, danced by Harrison. Learned and Harrison performed perfect grand tour jetés manages, while the battle ensued in the middle of the stage.

Once Clara defeats the Mouse King with a whack on the head by a shoe, she is transported by John Ringling via hotel luggage-cart train to the land of snow, where her parents, the Stahlbaums, danced by Ricardo Rhodes and Danielle Brown, are transformed into the Snow King and Queen. The snowflakes danced a Rockette-style show with a kick-line that pinwheeled around the stage. Although, a few times, the snowflakes seemed to a have a few moments of messy lines — it didn’t matter,

It’s hard to compete with George Balanchine’s version of “The Nutcracker,” but Matthew Hart certainly compares with his absolutely clever rendition of the holiday classic, which centers on the circus history established by Sarasota’s John Ringling.

The storyline that weaves John and Mable Ringling’s love story, the circus and Mable’s rose garden is brilliant. The sets and costumes designs by Peter Docherty are magnificent and sparkle with creativity.

Hart’s choreography is simple by design but has an oh-so-ever-reaching effect. The dancing is yet again perfectly performed by the Sarasota Ballet dancers. And, nothing will give you goose bumps more than Tchaikovsky’s music as the Christmas tree grows before the battle scene, especially when the music is performed live by the Sarasota Orchestra conducted by Andrew Lane.

This truly is a Sarasota holiday classic.

One wondered how this year’s Clara would compare to recently retired Sara Sardelli’s excellent portrayal, but Jessica Cohen stood up to the challenge and was a wonderful Clara with excellent expressions, stage presence and beautifully danced technique. Her counterpart, Logan Learned, played the part of the petulant child, Fritz, wreaking havoc through the party scene with his band of boys from the Sarasota Ballet School.

David Tlaiye, as John Ringling, and Alex Harrison, as John Ringling North, displayed the perfect amount of debonair grace, commanding the stage as they created excitement and magic for the party children. Jamie Carter, as the hotel manager, however, stole the show in the Party Scene. His comedic acting skills drew big laughs and giggles from

They sparkled and shone, nonetheless.

Every scene and dance in Act 2 was truly splendid. Hart turned the Land of the Sweets into a circus spectacular and, in every essence, it really was that — spectacular.

Samantha Benoit, as the Equestrienne, was hoisted in air by three Zebras, first lifting her in a shoulder sit then flipping her around multiple times into an arabesque mid-air. A magnificent elephant appeared with Anais Blake riding atop as the Arabian. But, most fun were the writhing wild cats, danced by Amy Wood, Emily Dixon, Kristianne Kleine, Kelly Yankle, Ellen Overstreet and Kristen Conrad, who hissed and clawed at the Arabian man, Daniel Rodriguez, as he tried to tame them.

The Tightrope girls tiptoed en pointe with parasols with standout twirlers Elizabeth Sykes, Ryoko Sadoshima and Nicole Padilla. Sara Scherer and Ricki Bertoni led the circus clowns with hilarity, especially when Bertoni arrived in a tiny, electric clown car that contained eight clown dancers from the Sarasota Ballet School. And the waltz of the roses was absolutely beautiful, as Mable Ringling, danced by Victoria Hulland, wove in and out of the dancing garden with John Ringling (Tlaiye).

Finally, Sugar, an aerialist, danced by Kate Honea, and her prince, Ricardo Graziano, commanded the stage in the grand pas de deux. The pair danced with effortless grace and performed each of their solos with precision. They wowed in the coda, with Graziano pulling off perfect tricks of multiple tours en l’air, entrechat six and grand assemblés that seemed to travel halfway across stage. Honea danced perfect piqué turn manèges that included grand tour jetés en attitude devant interspersed, as well as multiple fouetté en tournants in a corner sequence.

The magnificent production dramatically ended with John and Mable Ringling rising above the circus on a giant crescent moon with the entire cast waving from below. Bravo!

Because arts organizations around the world usually plan their seasons spanning the fall and spring, a new year means part two of the 2013-2014 arts season in Sarasota. If anyone asks why you’ve chosen to live here, just show them this article. If they love the arts and music, they’ll get it.

The Sarasota Orchestra, which officially signed Anu Tali as the new music director Aug. 1, has a lot to look forward to in the next several months. First of all, the orchestra is celebrating its 65th season and, along with a smashing series of Great Escapes and Pops concerts, the Masterworks series continues with some spectacular music performed by several masterful soloists, special guest conductors and, of course, Tali. For example, in just a few days, Carl St. Clair — a conductor who’s been on the Sarasota Orchestra’s podium before to great acclaim — is offering a program that includes Saint-Saëns’ rollicking Piano Concerto No. 2, played by the world-renowned pianist Jon Nakamatsu, followed by the heroic Richard Strauss work, “Ein Heldenleben.”

At the end of January, conductor Tito Muñoz will delve into some extraordinarily romantic music by Rachmaninov (the gorgeous Symphony No. 2), Barber’s witty and fun overture to “The School for Scandal” and a tango-like look at “The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires” by the Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla, in an arrangement by the Russian composer, Leonid Desyatnikov, with the award-winning American-Israeli violinist, Giora Schmidt.

On Feb. 20, Tali returns with a classically classic concert of exciting works

by Prokofiev (his famous “Classical Symphony”), Mozart and Sibelius. If you haven’t seen Tali yet, this will be a great introduction to the skyrocketing conductor who’s quickly becoming a household name around the world. You’ll see why we feel we’re lucky to have her here.

March brings the return of the esteemed conductor Mei-Ann Chen with the celebrated pianist Jean-Philippe Collard in Ravel’s G major piano concerto and RimskyKorsakov’s legendary “Scheherazade” with the orchestra’s concertmaster, Daniel Jordan. And April will bring the young and distinguished conductor Philip Mann in a basically Beethoven concert, which includes the Fifth Symphony and Sarasota Orchestra’s

Of course, the orchestra has many chamber ensembles that are performing this season. And, while the orchestra is celebrating its 65th anniversary, the Sarasota Music Festival, one of the nation’s best-regarded teaching and performing festivals, is commemorating its 50th birthday with a bountiful season of chamber works this June.

But Sarasota doesn’t quit with just one internationally renowned chamber festival. We have several in residence that draw great performers from around the globe, including La Musica International Chamber Music Festival, which will be playing five concerts this April and opening its rehearsals to subscribers, faculty and students. Some of the works scheduled for this year include the venerated “Trout Quintet,” by Schubert; the Mozart A Major Clarinet Quintet (aka the “M*A*S*H quintet because it became associated with the final episode of that television series); and a Greenfield Prize Commission by jazzclassical composer Vijay Iyer played by the young African-American Imani Winds Quintet with improvisatory pianist Corey Smythe.

buster, brilliant works and, when you attend a Sarasota Opera performance, you know you’re seeing and hearing a production that’s as close to what the composer intended as possible, without Verdi, Rossini and Wagner actually showing up to do the work themselves. Remember, Sarasota Opera is one of only a handful of companies in this country that owns its own opera house. It also presents these operas in repertory, so you have a chance to attend all the productions over the course of, say, a weekend. Not many cities can claim this from a company that’s admired and respected as one of the greats in the world.

There are several groups getting together for collaborative concerts this season, including Belle Canto, Gloria Musicae, Sarasota Young Voices, Key Chorale and several other respected ensembles. “The Night Guest” opens with the lines, “Ruth woke at four in the morning and her blurry brain said ‘Tiger’. That was natural; she was dreaming.” This sets up from the book’s inception an ambiguity about Ruth’s story that propels the mystery and pathos of Fiona McFarlane’s first novel. Ruth is a widow, who spends most of her time alone in a beach house up the coast from Sydney, where she and her husband, Harry, retired just before Harry died of a heart attack. Her sons, who live in New Zealand and Hong Kong, are vaguely worried by Ruth’s small lapses in judgment, so when a nurse shows up at Ruth’s doorstep one day “looking as if she had been blown in by the sea,” claiming to be a government carer, everyone — including Ruth — feels just a bit safer.

Coinciding with Frida’s windswept arrival is Ruth’s escalating confusion. Despite Ruth’s increasing dependence on her new carer, the reader is never certain whether Ruth is experiencing dementia or whether Frida is up to something much more ominous. McFarlane delicately and deftly intertwines these two characters’ lives with brilliant detail. Frida ends up living in the house without Ruth’s permission, and Ruth begins to feel as though she can’t live by herself without Frida’s obsessively mopped floors, pill dispensing and rules. As the novel progresses, Frida plays into Ruth’s tiger fantasies as well (though you’re not certain whether her game is to indulge her ward or confuse her) eventually convincing Ruth that she has stalked and killed the fearsome tiger.

Let me just get this out of the way: “The Night Guest” is not a happy book. It’s a devastating story about the fragility of aging, the

ravages of loneliness and the terror of memory loss. It’s also superbly written. In McFarlane’s care, the ocean becomes its own character, its salty potential permeating the book’s pages.

Swimming around inside Ruth’s head are delicately drawn flights of memory about a childhood in Fiji, a life in Sydney with her husband and sons and Ruth’s unrequited first love — a doctor named Richard with whom she reunites briefly during the course of the novel.

Treading water, like a tiger waiting to pounce, is Ruth’s increasingly fragmented perspective.

Although “The Night Guest” is in third person, McFarlane drops her reader inside Ruth’s head and lets him or her float there. It’s disconcerting, this framework, obscuring something more sinister just beneath it, like the threat of drowning when you’ve swum out too far, and you’re not convinced you can make it back to shore.
