+ Paint the town red and green Do you have the spirit of the season? Then show us. This year, we won’t just be on the lookout for the most festive holiday lights on the Key. We’ll be on the prowl for anything that embodies the happiness of the holidays with our new “Spirit of the Season” contest. We’re searching for anything — indoor and outdoor decorations, costumes, Christmas sweaters and more — that embody the holiday spirit. We’ll run our festive favorites in the Dec. 19 issue of the Longboat Observer, and our elves will distribute prizes. Photo submissions are welcome. Colony: Judge suggests sale U.S. Bankruptcy Judge K. Rodney May delayed his ruling on the case, but said a sale might be the best resolution. ‘None of us will ever see a case like this again,’ he said. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge K. Rodney May didn’t rule Tuesday on the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort case, opting instead to continue the hearing to Wednesday. He said he needed “to go through this one more time” Wednesday to review what had transpired. He also expressed frustration

with both sides and for the first time suggested that a foreclosure sale could resolve issues in a case in which the parties have yet to agree on a settlement. “It may be best to go to bid and see who wants to bid for the heart of the Colony and let the pieces fall where they may,” May said.

The parties made several revelations Tuesday. Colony Beach & Tennis Resort unit owner and developer Andy Adams and his entities agreed to a settlement amendment proposed Tuesday afternoon in a Tampa-based U.S. Bankruptcy courtroom that resolves his issues with the proposed settle-

ment and his votes that he cast in favor of the settlement last month. And, Colony Lender LLC principal David Siegal announced that Orlando-based Unicorp National Development Inc. managing member Charles Whittall,

+ Pettingell tradition is as sweet as pie Longboat Key Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate broker associate Roger Pettingell doesn’t take the cake when it comes to appealing to customers’ sweet spots. That’s because apparently he’s more of a pie guy. For the sixth consecutive year, Pettingell delivered pies from Yoder’s Restaurant in Sarasota to his customers at Thanksgiving. This year, he delivered a record 90 pies. Customers who were out of town had the option of donating their pies to Church of the Palms’ Thanksgiving dinner to sweeten the celebration for those in need.

The committee that prepared for the Urban Land Institute’s October study of Longboat Key consisted of two town commissioners, two Planning and Zoning Board members and two citizens. The Urban Land Institute Implementation Advisory Committee that the commission formed last month to replace the original committee consists of Mayor Jim Brown or his appointee, PZB Chairwoman B.J. Bishop and five citizens. Brown voted for the new committee — then he voted against it. The mayor said at the commission’s Monday, regular meeting that he made a mistake when he voted in favor of the new committee last month. So, he made a motion to continue with the original committee consisting of Commissioners Jack Duncan and Pat Zunz, PZB members Walter Hackett and George Symanski and Longboat Key citizens Tom Freiwald and Larry Grossman, both of whom are on the new committee. Brown proposed adding the three additional citizens on the new committee — Roger Leibin, David Novak and Jered Whitehead — while removing himself and Bishop from the committee.
