DANCING IN SIN Don’t let Sarasota Ballet dancer Ellen Overstreet’s sultry vixen character role fool you — she’s really the girl next door.

Ellen Overstreet lies beneath Ricardo Graziano. She gazes seductively into his eyes. Her tanned bare leg points toward the sky as if she’s about to wrap it around the principal dancer. It results in a sexy marketing photograph for the upcoming Program 2 of Sarasota Ballet. But, being a sultry seductress doesn’t come naturally to the dancer, regardless of how well she pretends.

Overstreet says, doing her best British impersonation of the Sarasota Ballet’s assistant director.

Overstreet has mastered the temptress side required for playing the role of Profane Love in Sarasota Ballet’s premiere of Sir Frederick Ashton’s “Illuminations” Nov. 22 and 23 at Sarasota Opera House. But Overstreet in real life is the American girl next door. In fact, she’s more of the role of the elegant and beautiful Sacred Love than the seductive, femme fatale Profane Love.

“She’s stubborn,” Overstreet says describing her character in the ballet. “She doesn’t take no for an answer.”

So, instead of taking a normal senior year of high school, she opted to move to San Francisco and pursue her passion professionally. And by the time most of her peers were celebrating making it through their first year of college, she was celebrating a contract with Sarasota Ballet.

The hardest part was not finishing her schooling, although Overstreet takes online college courses after getting home from Sarasota Ballet rehearsals. She says it’s to keep her brain sharp.

“It makes me feel accomplished every time I complete an exam, and when I go home I can put my mind on something other than ballet,” she says.

As if she wasn’t already accomplished. She’s in her second year dancing in a professional com-

Of course, she doesn’t need any booze to get into her current character. For Overstreet, the sultry music and a dance partner who keeps it fun and relaxed is enough

for her to completely let go.

On stage she’s not thinking about the audience or that she’s playing a role. “In a role like ‘Illuminations,’ you put yourself in character and you are actually the woman who is trying to get her man,” she says with a laugh. She only remembers she’s Ellen Overstreet when it’s time to take a bow.

4. Social On First — “We went there after a show. Their pizza is amazing, and the atmosphere is awesome.

I feel like it’s a hot spot of Sarasota — a new hot spot.”

5. The Ringling garden — “That’s another one of my escape places. If I have a long break or between shows and I don’t want to go home (I go there). I love going there and walking by the water. It’s one of those places that clears your mind and it feels so good to stay outside.”

and Profane Love. It’s not a lucid plot, and offers a lot of imagery.

One of the up-to-your-interpretation, symbolic images is that Profane Love dances with a bare left foot and a pointe shoe on the right foot. Overstreet says it was surprisingly easy to get used to.

And, with the lack of photos, footage or even writing about the ballet on the Internet, this allows Overstreet to make the character her own.

For Overstreet, this is her favorite part of being a professional dancer.

“I like getting to dance a role that’s really challenging,” she says. “I like the process of working on something every day…one that I can struggle on but see improvement.” It’s gratifying.

Then, Overstreet gives away the secret — ballet is not as easy as the Sarasota Ballet dancers make it look. Sometimes there’s a step you can’t do or a tight muscle giving you problems. And there’s the lingering fear looming that most every dancer is prone to an injury at some point.

“Even if you had a great day and great class yesterday, you pretty much start over the next day,” she says.

Overstreet is poised and speaks with as much grace as she dances.

It’s easy to forget that she’s only 20 years old. Just three years ago, she was a junior in high school in McLean, Va., right outside of Washington, D.C. She lived a balanced adolescence heading from piano lessons to ballet class, to soccer practice and basketball games. In ninth grade, her ballet teacher advised her to attend summer intensives, and asked her if she’d consider dancing as a career.

Season VII of Season of Sculpture shares ground with artists Attendees of the Nov. 16 Season VII “Shared Ground” celebration raised their glasses of champagne as booms sounded overhead. It was a surprise fireworks show to culminate the planning and installation of the biannual, free, outdoor art exhibition that decorates the bayfront.

Five of the eight artists who contributed the 18 sculptural pieces were in attendance, along with donors, board members, curators and supporters of the exhibit. THANKSGIVING

TIPS ON PREPARING AHEAD OF TIME • Purchase approximately 1.5 pounds of bird per person. If you’re hosting a large party, it’s easier to accommodate two smaller birds than one large one.

• Don’t forget to defrost the turkey!

It takes 24 hours per every five pounds of bird. If you’re out of time, consider purchasing a fresh turkey.

• Plan time accordingly. It takes 20 minutes per pound at 325 degrees to roast. It should cool for a halfhour before you carve it.

hanksgiving is nigh! If that statement has you already planning your recipes, then this article probably isn’t for you.

Although, if you’re the accident-prone type of person capable of roasting your turkey and your entire kitchen, too — then you should probably keep reading.

And if the only planning you’ve done for hosting your holiday party is that you’re planning on hosting one — then here’s your guide to getting your act together.

One thing, however, isn’t belated this year — Hanukkah. The Observer wishes you and yours a Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Hanukah!

• Still frozen — thaw it in a coldwater bath, replacing the water every 30 minutes, or roast it in pieces.

• Late going in the oven — cut into the legs and wings and remove the breast meat from the bone and roast it on a baking sheet • Not cooking — wrap the bird in aluminum foil and turn the temperature up to 450 degrees and cook for three minutes per pound of bird.

• Done too early — keep it in a warm place under a tent of aluminum foil.

• If you’re stuffing your bird, cook it until the center of the stuffing and thigh reach 165 degrees.

• Do all your prep work the night before — chop the vegetables and pre-measure ingredients. If you can, prepare any bread, pie and cranberry sauce the night before.

Mashed potatoes can be prepared the day before and warmed beginning the morning of in a slow cooker.

• Always have extra aluminum foil and chicken or vegetable stock on hand.

• Starts to burn — flip the turkey on its back and continue cooking.

Remove any burned skin prior to carving. *For all other turkey emergencies, call Butterball’s expert help line: 1-800-Butterball (available 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thanksgiving Day).

• If your gravy is greasy — stick it in the freezer until the fat solidifies, then scoop it off.

• If your gravy is lumpy — strain it or puree it in the blender.

• If your gravy is too thin — make an equal part soft butter and flower paste and add it little by little into the saucepan, bringing it to a boil after each addition.

THEATER // ‘Show Boat’

// ’Show Boat’

“Show Boat” has sailed the waters of American theater for a long time. Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II first launched the musical in 1927. Their tale of actors, singers, dockworkers and stagehands of the Cotton Blossom (a floating theater on a riverboat) has seen a host of staged and filmed revisions, adaptations and accretions ever since. Director Rob Ruggiero refitted it for a leaner, if not meaner, production at the Goodspeed Opera House in 2011. That version is now afloat on the Asolo Rep stage — and Ruggiero is again at the helm.

We follow the lives of the show folks on the Cotton Blossom from 1887 to 1927.

There’s the Alan Hale-esque Capt. Andy (Joel Blum) and his uptight wife, Parthy Ann (Dorothy Stanley), and their daughter, Magnolia (Marissa McGowan), whose heart is smitten by riverboat gambler Gaylord Ravenal (Ben Davis). Magnolia and Gay wind up on stage when Steve and Julie (David Sattler and Daniella Dalli), the married headliners, are targeted by anti-miscegenation laws. (These improbable career breaks only seem to happen in musicals, though, to be fair, this was perhaps the first time.) Magnolia and Gaylord become the stars, get married and have a cute kid (Lilly Mae Stewart and Denise Lute). Sadly, Gay’s gambling addiction leads to destitution; Gaylord leaves for the good of the family. (Spoiler alert: There’s a tearful reconciliation at the end.) Along the way, the Cotton Blossom’s cook Queenie (E. Faye Butler) and her husband, Joe (Michael James Leslie), alternate between moments of love and bickering. Vaudeville-style comics Frank and Ellie May (Denis Lambert and Elisa Van Duyne) do the same. So it goes.

End of Opera.” But, at the beginning of the score, it’s called “A Musical Play.” Whatever you call it, “Show Boat,” in the hands of Director Rob Ruggiero, with choreography by Noah Racey, new orchestrations

by Dan Delange and music direction and conducting by F. Wade Russo, is a mega hit.

Jerome Kern, the composer, with book and (most) lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, originally had a show that ran about four hours. But that was back in 1927, and nothing like it had come before. This groundbreaking musical covered entirely new territory, not only because it was the first piece to have a book that carried its story through from beginning to end, but also because it was the first show to touch on race relations (eight years before “Porgy and Bess”), incorporate underscoring (the use of music under dialogue) and to use songs to further the plot.

Musically, it was a prediction of things to come. Suddenly, audiences were faced with an American musical that wasn’t a grouping of musical numbers strung together by a flimsy plot. It was European operetta, American-style, leading the way as the benchmark for future American musical theater productions, from “Oklahoma” and “South Pacific,” to “Hair” and “Into the Woods.”

The Asolo has done away with the stage bloat expected by audiences of the 1920s and trimmed it down to its essentials: great songs that enhance the theatricality and emotion of the play. Four hours have become less than two and a half, and they absolutely fly by.

Elisa Van Duyne, as Ellie May Chipley, is a charming cross between Celeste Holm and Lucille Ball, and Denis Lambert in the role of her husband and comedy partner, Frank Schultz, is the perfect song-and-dance man — he proves timing is everything, from comic relief to the old soft shoe. Hammerstein’s tunes are no less than iconic: “Ol’ Man River,” “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man,” “Bill” and many others. The best of the songs draw from the well of African-American music. But this is more than an homage or a rip-off.

The songs move us because of the original story — and Edna Ferber’s original passion for social justice and capacity for empathy for marginalized groups. (The Mexican-Americans of Ferber’s “Giant” were another example.)

“Show Boat” isn’t about the AfricanAmerican experience. But it doesn’t sweep it under the dock, either. It shows us the deck hands, wharf rats and servants at the periphery of the Cotton Blossom’s floating world. White entertainers have their often self-created problems; black people work and don’t get paid much; mixed-race entertainers passing for white get kicked off the boat. Life, as your parents reminded you, is unfair. The indifferent river keeps flowing and doesn’t seem to care. The creative minds behind this musical care deeply for everyone in this world.

Lady Love,” one of two old-time hits interpolated into the Trocadero Nightclub scene in Act II, is an astonishing example of how to dance and sing while keeping a character firmly in one’s grasp.

Daniella Dalli, in the role of Julie LaVerne, positively shines as an actress with the voice of a torch singer, able to seamlessly incorporate the soul of Julie into the sound of her singing.

Her “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man” in the first act and “Bill” in the second (written, by the way, 10 years earlier for the show “Oh Lady! Lady!!”

by P.G. Wodehouse and Kern and then interpolated into “Show Boat”) were steaming hot, sung with a dusky bottom register that hints of whiskey times ahead.

Magnolia and Gaylord, sung by Marissa McGowan and Ben Davis, were the fine romantic leads. McGowan, whose voice has just the right touch of the operatic tradition needed to sing “After the Ball” (another old song included at the Trocadero) mixed with the Broadway shimmer necessary in a ragged up version of “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man,” was a perfect match for Davis, a real baritenor whose singing and style harken back to the great days of John Raitt in “Carousel.” Their duets, “Only Make Believe,” “You Are Love” and “Why Do I Love You,” were romantic and heartbreakingly beautiful.

Michael James Leslie’s Joe was the glue that held the show together, dramatically and musically. We’re used to hearing “Ol’ Man River” sung by a booming, operatic bass but Leslie’s Joe was so much more. Although his voice is buttery smooth with a tinge of Al Jolson’s quiver, he used his sound to enhance his character so, when he’d appear — on stage, in the aisles, in a balcony box — he hovered like the show’s guardian angel. E. Faye Butler’s Queenie, Joe’s ever-loving, ever-exasperated wife, was the perfect foil, and their hilarious duet, “I Still Suits Me,” was filled with good humor, love and warmth.

What makes the Asolo’s production a musical groundbreaker is how beautifully it’s been cut and honed into a “Show Boat” that’s lean and pure; a “Show Boat” that shows off the great music Kern wrote while using it to propel a plot that Hammerstein would probably applaud were he here today. It’s the “Show Boat” that will float in our hearts and heads for years to come.

Sole Men (56 of them) waited on the women hand and foot, making sure they were never holding an empty glass, and made the rounds through the foyer presenting merchandise from 19 retailers for the women to indulge.
