EAST COUNTY — As sales associate Mark Attar makes his way through a new model home in the new Riva Trace community, he smiles.

This particular model, the Havana, has been creating quite a buzz with its builtin courtyards, vastly open 2,450-square-foot floor plan and other attributes.

“This has been the talk of the town,” Attar said. “People are coming specifically to see the Havana. It’s an incredible response.”

Medallion Home opened Riva Trace the weekend of Oct. 29 but hardly has had time to plan a grand opening, tentatively slated for sometime in mid-December, because visitor traffic has been so heavy, Medallion’s Director of Sales and Marketing Gregg Glasser said.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — To celebrate a 50th birthday, some people splurge on luxurious European vacations, purchase a new car, throw a party or eat out at their favorite restaurant.

But as Lakewood Ranch resident Jamey Murphy pondered the idea, he settled on something a bit more triumphant — completion of the New York City Marathon.

“It was something to shoot for,” said Murphy, finance director for Champs Sports. “I’ve always wanted to do a marathon.”

Oven-roasted Brine-Cured Organic Turkey with Natural Pan Sauce Submitted by Chef Trey Place, Palm-Aire Country Club Ingredients 12- to 14-pound fresh organic turkey 1 large onion, rough chopped 1 orange, quartered 1 lemon, quartered 2 celery ribs, roughly chopped 1 large carrot, roughly chopped 3 bay leaves 1 bunch thyme 10 black peppercorns 2 tablespoons sage 1 cup sugar 1 cup salt 2 gallons water

Method 1. Dissolve salt and sugar in water; add all ingredients and mix well.

2. Add turkey and refrigerate for 24 to 36 hours.

3. After allotted time, remove turkey and rinse under water. Pat dry.

4. Place one orange, cut in half, in cavity of bird with roughly chopped carrot, onion, celery, fresh thyme and sage.

5. Season cavity with salt and pepper.

6. Truss legs.

7. Rub bird with olive oil and season with salt and pepper.

8. Place in roasting pan, breast-side down with neck and giblets.

9. Cook at 325 F preheated oven for about one hour, basting every 30 minutes.

10. Remove from oven turn bird breast side up and continue to roast and baste until internal temperature of 165 F — about three hours.

11. Remove from oven and let rest 20 minutes before carving.

Pan Sauce

Ingredients: 4 cups turkey stock 1 cup Sauvignon Blanc 4 tablespoons butter ¼ cup flour Salt Pepper *Pan drippings from roasting pan, deglazed with white wine.

Method: 1. In heavy sauce pan, melt butter.

2. Add flour and make pale roux, stirring constantly 8 to 10 minutes over medium heat.

3. Add hot stock. Whisk and bring to simmer.

4. Add pan dripping and diced giblets and meat from neck.

5. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

6. Pour in sauce boat and serve.

Grandmother’s Southern Cornbread Dressing

Roasted Cauliflower with Bacon and Garlic Submitted by Jaden Hair, steamykitchen.com; Servings: 4 Ingredients 1 head cauliflower, cut into small florets 6 cloves garlic, halved 3 strips bacon, cut into bite sized pieces 2 teaspoons olive oil Salt to taste Freshly ground black pepper to taste Method 1. Preheat oven to 375 F. 2. On a baking sheet, toss together the cauliflower, garlic slices, bacon and olive oil.

3. Roast for 20 minutes until bacon is crisp and cauliflower is cooked through.

4. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Submitted by Glenda Gallagher Ekasala, John Dough Bakery Servings: 8 to 12 Ingredients 2 packages of Martha White (or similar) cornbread mix 3 stalks celery 1 yellow onion, chopped fine 1/2 to 1 pound of Italian or Southern-style sausage, cooked and chopped 1 can of Campbell’s condensed cream of mushroom soup 2 cups or more of juice from the cooked turkey to bring the mixture to a moist consistency Method 1. Prepare cornbread according to package directions. Let cool.

2. Crumble prepared cornbread in a large bowl.

3. Mix all ingredients until the cornbread mixture is moist.

4. Place in a greased baking dish and bake, covered at 350 F until the cornbread dressing is cooked through and begins to brown.

5. Remove cover and finish cooking until golden brown.

CHEF’S RAVE: “My father’s Southern-raised mother made this cornbread dressing every Thanksgiving, and my mother’s Northern-raised mother liked it so much she adopted it for her own,” Ekasala says. “The great thing about it is there is no end to the variations you can make — adding mushrooms, for example.”

COOKING NOTES: “The important thing is to use a cornbread mix that does not have sugar in it; in other words, no corn muffins, but rather real Southern-style cornbread, such as Martha White’s,” Ekasala says. “Since we all cooked without a real recipe, these amounts are approximate. The recipe is very forgiving; just make sure you have enough liquid from the cooked turkey to render the dressing moist.

Then, serve it with your homemade gravy.”

Roasted Corn and Butternut Squash Soup Submitted by Chef Paul Evans, Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club Servings: 4 to 6 Ingredients 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 cup onion, diced ¼ inch 1/4 cup celery, diced ¼ inch 1/4 cup carrot, diced ¼ inch 1 cinnamon stick Sea salt, preferably gray salt Freshly ground black pepper 4 cups chicken stock or canned lowsalt chicken broth 1/2 teaspoon ground toasted coriander, optional 1 1/2 cups roasted winter squash 1/2 cup half-and-half, optional 1 cup roasted corn Method 1. Combine all ingredients, except corn, in a soup pot and simmer until all vegetables are soft.

2. Puree until smooth.

3. Add the roasted corn.

FOR MORE RECIPES, VISIT YOUROBSERVER.COM Baked Pineapple Submitted by Wilma McCray, resident of Tara Servings: 9 to 12 Ingredients 2 20-ounce cans of pineapple chunks (reserve juice) 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese 1 cup sugar 6 tablespoons all purpose flour 1 stick melted butter 5 or 6 bread slices, crumbled Method 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. 2. Drain pineapple and place in greased 9-by-13inch baking dish.

3. Sprinkle cheese over pineapple.

4. Mix flour and sugar and sprinkle over cheese.

5. Pour reserved juice over all.

6. Crumble bread slices into butter until all is absorbed; sprinkle over mixture in dish.

7. Bake mixture at 350 F for 35 to 40 minutes or until heated through.

CHEF’S RAVE: McCray says this is a family favorite shared at Christmas and Thanksgiving.

“It’s a sweet side dish,” she says of the recipe, which she got while working at a school district in Missouri. “It’s so simple.”

+ Authorities: vehicle fire apparent suicide Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office officials have identified the man whose body was discovered in a burned truck as Suchart Sariya, 66, of Sarasota.

Sarasota firefighters responded to reports of a burning teal-colored pickup at around 11 a.m. Nov. 8, at Nathan Benderson Park. After extinguishing the fire, officials discovered a body in the front seat.

Sarasota Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Wendy Rose said officials suspect Sariya intentionally set the vehicle on fire in an apparent suicide.

“The vehicle fire appears to be a suicide, and that is how the investigation is proceeding,” she said.

Sariya was the owner of Dang’s Welding Shop, 2251 17th St., Sarasota.

Matthew is a 5-year-old boy who was diagnosed Sept. 28 with ALL Leukemia.

He has had three blood and two platelet transfusions to date, and is undergoing chemotherapy and blood work at least once a week.

The event served as a time for secondyear LECOM medical students to learn about clinical rotations, internships and residency options that are available nationwide. Students also were able to speak with LECOM alumni about their experiences.

Reported Nov. 11

8:48 a.m. — 14200 block of Gnatcatcher Terrace. Burglary. Unknown person(s) pried on two, rear, sliding-glass doors until they were able to get one of them open.

The person(s) then entered the residence and pried open the victim’s hall closet near the washer and dryer. The residence is a rental property, and the victim keeps his personal property locked up in the closet.

The person(s) stole two bottles of scotch from the closet, and at the time of the report, nothing else was found missing. The victim has a cleaning service, and he stated he would contact them to see when they were there last. When the victim got home he found his front door was closed but not locked and pieces of wood from the broken closet were on the floor.

5:11 a.m. — 1400 block of Millbrook Circle. Petit theft. The victim has partial custody of a child, who stays with her and his father. The victim noticed her bottle of mouthwash was taken. She explained to the deputy only one other person besides her has a key to the residence. There were no broken windows or pry marks on the doors or windows of the home. The victim has confronted the individual about the mouthwash, and that individual denied allegations. The victim requested a case number for her records.

Common sense teacher pay The ongoing controversy over teacher merit pay is understandable. After all, teachers have been allowed to get pay raises and maintain job security each year with almost no accountability.

But frustration with the inability to get rid of bad teachers and reward good teachers has led most people outside the education establishment to conclude that teachers should be held to the same standards as other people who have jobs. Some would argue those should be even higher standards, because their jobs in teaching and molding youth are truly important.

So the Legislature passed a bill last year requiring good teachers to get paid more money and bad teachers to be let go. It makes sense, but that is not what has been happening. For the most part, teachers are paid the same based on how long they have taught — good, bad or otherwise — and almost none is fired, even when he is known to be a crummy teacher.

Implementing the merit-pay process is difficult for state school districts. But it

shouldn’t be. Principals and teachers in a school know who are the good teachers and the bad teachers. Other teachers, particularly know the classrooms where students are learning and engaged and those where they are just being passed on.

But Florida is pursuing a tortuous route, using a “value-added model” that takes into account FCAT scores, expectations and other factors as half of an evaluation, and the principal’s observations and professional development goals for the other half.

The idea is to make it as uniformly fair as possible, and transparent to some degree, but the result may end up being something incomprehensibly complicated, which will cause a lot more frustration.

This makes it all much harder than it needs to be.

Manatee County has not determined how to measure the value-added portion of the law yet. It is forming a committee to determine the best measurement method.

But most hearts in the education establishment are not really in any of the process

Gov. Scott was right on high-speed rail Evidence is quickly piling up that Gov. Rick Scott’s controversial decision to reject federal money for a high-speed rail from to Tampa to Orlando was right.

The above is a headline you will never read in your mainstream newspapers as they pursue every conceivable — and some inconceivable — negative story line while ignoring others to discredit a governor they do not like.

Scott was right to dump the high-speed rail, as ensuing events are making plain.

The feds promised — with tax dollars — to fund the capital costs of the 84-mile line of $2.4 billion. The state would have to pick up anything ROD over that, but that was THOMSON the estimated cost. Scott was skeptical, for good reason. Plus, he realized that low ridership would mean the state would have to subsidize the line every year, taking money away from other transportation projects.

So in February he said, no thanks. You’d think he had ordered the death of all firstborns. The media, unions, Democrats and some Republicans were apoplectic that he had turned away federal stimulus money that would have created construction jobs and helped save the Earth just to appease tea-party extremists.

Here is how the St. Petersburg Times’ Tallahassee bureau reported it in the paper’s Feb. 17 news story: “Never mind that the federal govern-

ment was willing to pay nearly all the cost to build a high-speed rail line connecting Tampa to Orlando.

“Never mind that private companies were willing to cover any additional construction costs and operating losses.

“Florida Gov. Rick Scott on Wednesday rejected the federal government’s offer of $2.4 billion to build the line — prompting cheers from his tea-party base and harsh criticism from leading Florida Republicans and Democrats — squashing a project that has been decades in the making.”

But let’s look at the evidence since Scott’s crazy, thoughtless, job-killing, knee-jerk, tea-party-pleasing decision.

• Governors in Wisconsin, Ohio and New Jersey also rejected federal funds because they were looking at the same financial realities as Scott, not the pie-in-the-sky transit Utopia that consumes the media.

• California is heading for a high-speed train wreck with its Los Angeles to San Francisco route. It was originally set to cost $43 billion, and three years later, before construction has even started, the cost has risen to $67 billion. It now may reach $100 billion, with no additional funding seen.

There is general acknowledgment that ridership was overestimated (it always is). And lawsuits are flying everywhere. A recent poll found more than 62% of Californians now want the whole thing stopped.

• China has aggressively scaled back its ambitious high-speed rail, and Brazil has canceled plans for its Rio de Janeiro-Sao

because they prefer the rather easy status quo. It’s always difficult to get out of your comfort zone.

The Manatee Education Association is supporting a Florida Education Association lawsuit trying to block the new law creating the merit pay, demonstrating clearly that teacher pay and benefits are more important to the unions than student achievement, which we have pointed out for years.

Education has a pretty long track record of discarding common sense for the latest fad in teaching methods. In the case of merit pay, good old-fashioned common sense is probably the best possible method.

In any industry, co-workers and managers generally know who the good workers are and who the slackers are. Complicated formulae for measuring effectiveness are usually not needed. And they probably are not needed in education.

Manatee County schools should utilize a system of teachers and principals for determining the best and worst teachers as much as state law allows.

• Even the U.S. Department of Transportation has sharply revised its high-speed expectations downward, now longing for small, incremental, long-term changes and dropping the idea that 80% of Americans will have access.

• And finally, Congress has pulled the plug on funding. Not just Republicans, who in the House allocated nothing for highspeed rail. Even the Democrat-controlled Senate only approved a token $100 million (about 1/100th of recent allocations.)

The entire high-speed rail industry is in disrepute because no one believes either their cost or ridership estimates. California is the norm, not the exception.

The concept is just not American — geographically, that is. This is a continent-sized country, with huge distances between cities. That makes air travel the better transportation mode. France and Japan, which are the countries that have even moderate success with high-speed transit, are small countries with cities close together. Even then, most of their lines are subsidized.

The reality, which was clear to Scott in February, is that high-speed rail will not work in Florida. If it can ever work anywhere in the reasonably near future, it is in the densely populated Northeast corridor.

A high-speed bullet train between Tampa and Orlando was always going to be a boondoggle, and may well not even have been built after wasting millions of dollars.

So while Gov. Scott appeared to be out of the mainstream, it turns out he was leading the way. The media, Democrats, unions, some Republicans and President Obama, who all piled on against him, were wrong.

“Without the tremendous support (of the Uihlein family, who owns SMR) all the way through, none of this would be possible,” Gardner said.

SMR turned a watermelon field adjacent to the Lakewood Ranch Post Office into open fields for amateur sports about one year ago. At that time, the company purposely opened the fields without amenities, planning instead to solicit feedback from users of the facilities before adding more elaborate features.

The No. 1 request, Jensen said, has been for lights, so teams could use the fields longer.

Already, the facility has impacted local businesses, with tournaments causing local restaurants to run out of food and meet sales quotas within days’ of the month’s start, for example. A Labor Day weekend soccer tournament alone was estimated to generate about $8 million.

With 12 major events already lined up for 2012, officials expect the facility to have an economic impact of more than $62 million

“These lights enable us to do so much for our community,” SMR’s Director of Sports Tim Mulqueen said, adding

that hosting the Olympic teams would not be possible without lighted fields. “There’s nothing like this training facility. This is unique.”

SMR’s long-term plans for the Premier Sports Campus include adding a concession area, as well

as bathroom facilities. Jensen said SMR installed lights sooner than he expected, but the company does not have immediate plans to install other amenities at the complex at this time.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — As children chased soccer balls and brandished lacrosse sticks at the Premier Sports Campus Nov. 14, officials from Lakewood Ranch developer Schroeder-Manatee Ranch on Nov. 14 celebrated the mark of the complex’s next phase — lights.

SMR invested $1.1 million to install sports floodlights on eight of 22 sports fields and turned on the lights for the first time during Monday’s ceremony.

“It’s the next step in elevating our game with the sports campus,” SMR President and CEO Rex Jensen said. “This is something the (company) cares a lot about.”

Cranberry Pear Crisp Submitted by Heidi Kelliher, kitchen manager and baking and pastry instructor at Viking Culinary Center; Servings: 12 6 large pears, peeled cored and chopped into bite-size pieces 1 cup fresh cranberries, thawed 1 teaspoon minced orange zest ½ salt 1 tablespoon all purpose flour 1 teaspoon butter ½ cup sugar Topping 2 sticks butter 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup light brown sugar’ 2 teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon nutmeg 1 cup chopped pecans 1 cup rolled oats 2/3 cup flour Method 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. 2. In a large bowl toss pears and cranberries with zest, salt and flour.

3. Transfer to a buttered 9-by-13-inch dish, then pour sugar over fruit mixture.

4. For the topping, in a food processor pulse all ingredients until mixture is crumbly and butter is well coated.

5. Spoon the topping mixture evenly over the sugared fruit.

6. Bake in the pre-heated oven until topping is golden and fruit is bubbling, about 45 minutes.

8. Sprinkle your favorite grated cheese over puffs and bake in a preheated oven at 350 F until cheese has melted.

5. With two spoons or 2-ounce scoops, drop mixture into heated oil; only cook up to 10 at one time to help keep cooking time as even as possible.

6. When browned and puffed up, place on paper towels to drain.

MacAllisters to host Scottish Festival The third annual event will benefit the Wobbly Feet Foundation.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — As East County residents celebrate all things Scottish this weekend, they’ll also have a chance to raise funds for medical research that will impact families affected by several brain-related diagnoses.

MacAllisters Grill & Tavern will host the third annual Scottish St. Andrew’s Festival at 6 p.m. Nov. 19, at Lakewood Ranch Main Street. This year’s event will benefit the Wobbly Feet Foundation.

The free, family-friendly festival includes free beer and scotch sampling and live music by mod-

ern/Southern rock band juniperRED and the Jacobites Pipe and Drum Band.

Additional festivities include golf swing analysis, Scottish cupcake decorating and plenty of activities for children, including BounceU activities, balloon artists, face painting, Scottish characters for the children and more.

Food and drink also will be available for purchase.

“It will be a lot of fun,” said event co-organizer Karen Ronney, who owns MacAllisters with her husband, Malcolm. “St. Andrews

Ataxia-Telangiectasia Ataxia causes the degeneration of the cerebellum that leads to a lack of muscle control, which causes slurred speech, wobbliness and eventually confines the patient to a wheelchair.

Telangiectasia appears as red spider veins in the corners of the eyes, on the ears and cheeks.

A-T is a genetic neuromuscular disease that affects several body systems. A-T surfaces when both parents are carriers of a specific genetic mutation and pass it on to their child. It is extremely rare, with only about 500 children in the United States currently living with A-T.

Night is Nov. 30. This (event) is to celebrate all things Scottish, which are golf, scotch and bagpipes. That’s what the festival is all about.

“The whole event is free,” she said. “We’re also looking for people to put their hands in their pockets and (donate) to charity.”

All proceeds from the event benefit the Wobbly Feet Foundation, an East

“We’re honored (to be this year’s charity),” Samantha Dzembo said, adding she’s grateful for the support the community already has shown the organization over the last three years. “There are only 500 kids currently diagnosed in the United States with A-T, and less than 1,000 worldwide. It’s considered an orphan disease.”

The Wobbly Feet Foundation currently is funding research on the ATM protein, which will have an impact on treatments for A-T, as well as conditions such as AIDS, multiple sclerosis, cancer and other diseases, Dzembo said.

“The work we’re doing will actually have benefits for people with Alzheimer’s and (other diseases),” she

Cheerleaders to perform in New York Two ODA students earned invitations to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

EAST COUNTY — Every Thanksgiving Day morning, Out-of-Door Academy cheerleader Sarah Nimptsch has rushed to the television screen with her family to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

But this year, she won’t be in front of the TV. In fact, she won’t be at home, at all.

Nimptsch and fellow ODA cheerleader Ashley Preininger will be performing in the parade as part of the Universal Cheerleaders Association All-American Cheerleading Squad.

“I’ve watched (the parade) since I was a little girl,” said Nimptsch, a sophomore. “It’s always been a family tradition. I (like) to watch the cheerleaders.”

Preininger, a senior, agreed, noting she grew up in New Jersey and always has wanted to see the parade in person.

Although Thanksgiving will be different without their families nearby, the girls say they couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity.

“It’s going to be overwhelming,” Preininger said, adding she’s excited about possibly seeing celebrities and newscasters along the route. “I can’t even imagine the magnitude of what it’s going to be like. It’s going to be intense.”

The colder weather and the length of the route has proven a bit of concern for the girls, but they are preparing as much as possible.

Nimptsch even has started running to give her more endurance for parade day, she said.

The girls received choreography for their parade performance earlier this month and already have begun practicing their routines, which they will perform alongside more than 200 other cheerleaders from across the United States.

Preininger, captain for ODA’s varsity squad, qualified with UCA to perform in the Thanksgiving Day parade in London last year but was unable to attend because of illness.

Nimptsch, Preininger and fellow cheerleader Emma Holland this year earned a spot on UCA’s All-American squad and a chance to perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade after auditioning at a UCA-run cheerleading camp this summer.

Holland is unable to attend the parade but said she’s excited to see her classmates cheer on behalf of ODA.

Although a lifelong athlete, Murphy has only been running for the last 10 years. He and his wife both are members of the Lakewood Ranch Running Club.

“I didn’t feel I was ready (for the triathlon),” Murphy said. “I’m more of a runner. We just really love it; we love running. We love the camaraderie of it. Knowing people are doing their best — that inspires me. I like being in that environment.”

Although Murphy and Mailman compete regularly in half-marathons and shorter races, Murphy said he knew this longer race would be challenging — not only physically and mentally but also in preparation.

He ran more than 10 hours a week, plus spent up to 15 hours a week working out, as well. The schedule proved grueling, but Murphy said he’s proud of the discipline he used to reach his goal.

He and Mailman got up as early as 3:30 a.m. some mornings to train to beat the sweltering summer Florida heat.

“It really taught me discipline,” Murphy said of preparing for the race. “I didn’t miss any (training). I’ve put in 900 miles since June. I took it seriously.”

Once in New York City for the race, Murphy and Mailman were amazed at the size of the event, which included about 47,000 racers and raised more than $30 million for charities.

The two started the race together but soon were separated in the crowd. However, Murphy stayed focused, intent on reaching his time goal.

Despite cramping up off-and-on for the last six miles of the race, he completed the race in 3:54:15.

“It was unbelievable,” Murphy said of the experience, noting he heard 36 bands as he ran through the course.

“My legs were tired, but it felt good. It was a sense of accomplishment. That’s like the granddaddy of all the races. And it was exciting to share it with Jodi, too.

“I knew it was going to be a tough race,” he said. “You feel every mile of it.”

Although Murphy beat his wife by more than eight minutes on their first 26-mile trek, he knows she’ll keep the pressure on, he said.

“It gave me bragging rights until the next race,” Murphy said. “We razz each other all the time — in a friendly way. It keeps us motivated.”

With a marathon under his belt, Murphy said his next goal is to complete a half Ironman triathlon.

“I think this year’s squad has gained a lot of respect (as a sport) and has improved,” Holland said. “It was a great accomplishment for three of us to get picked.”

Preininger agreed.

“It reflects on the entire squad, not just the three of us,” she said, noting the squad won the camp’s coveted Spirit Award. “We’ve gained a lot of credibility as a sport, this year especially. Performing in front of crowds, we’ve hit all of our stunts, which has never happened.”

The girls said this year, under the direction of a new cheerleading coach, Sandi Dietrich, ODA’s cheerleading squad has worked hard to increase school spirit and foster a sense of support for all of ODA’s sports.

“We want to give cheerleaders a good name,” Nimptsch said. “We also love to support our football team and the other sports here.”

Loss shouldn’t tarnish miracle season All good things must come to end.

It’s only a matter of time.

Sometimes, it happens all too quickly. Sometimes, it happens when the end is the only thing left in sight. And sometimes, it happens in the midst of history.

Such JEN was the case this BLANCO past Saturday, when the Lakewood Ranch High volleyball team found itself on the losing end of a 3-0 decision in the Class 6A-Region 3 finals at Tarpon Springs.

The Lady Mustangs led early in the first set, but timely serving by the Lady Spongers coupled with uncharacteristic errors by the Lady Mustangs eventually led to a three-set sweep.

And after losing the first set and their momentum, Lakewood’s historic season came to a close.

It wasn’t the way the Lady Mustangs had hoped to close their season, but in a season of firsts, Lakewood put together a season that was nothing short of miraculous.

With only three seniors on their roster, the Lady Mustangs breezed through the regular district season, posting a perfect 5-0 record.

BRADEN RIVER — There’s rarely a day that goes by that Braden River High freshman Carley Engelberger isn’t kicking around a soccer ball.

From the moment she first stepped onto the field as an energetic 3-year-old, Carley has been anticipating the day when she would finally be able to rep-

resent her school on the soccer field.

But Carley’s dream of playing high school soccer under the guidance of her father, Don, the Lady Pirates varsity coach, nearly derailed three months ago. In mid-August, Engelberger learned of an FHSAA rule involving his daughter and a pos-

sible recruiting violation.

Last year, Carley played sporadically for her father’s Braden River Soccer Club U14 girls team. As a result, Carley, who attends Braden River because her father is both the girls soccer coach and a social studies teacher, was deemed ineligible to play at the beginning of the year.

“There’s a rule that is in place, and the idea is basically that I can’t be coaching at the club and recruit players to come here,”

Engelberger said. “The rule is definitely in place, and I understand that’s the rule.”

The news was especially devastating for Carley, who also was reeling from the loss of her 11-year-old cousin who played soccer because of her.

“At first, I was shocked,” Carley said. “Then, I was kind of frustrated and then disappointed.

I was like ‘What do you mean I can’t play?’ I’ve loved the idea of

Dynamic Duo Lakewood Ranch High juniors Danielle Valley and Will Kazokas each won individual state titles at the FHSAA Class 2A swimming championships Nov. 12, at the YMCA Aquatic Center in Orlando.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Danielle Valley and Will Kazokas knew they had something to prove long before they set foot in the YMCA Aquatic Center in Orlando.

Expectations were high for the Lakewood Ranch juniors, and in the days leading up to the FHSAA Class 2A swimming championships Nov. 12, Valley and Kazokas felt the pressure.

After all, the two had earned a combined three individual top seeds — Valley in the 200-and500-yard freestyles and Kazokas

in the 100 freestyle — and carried the weight of their team on their shoulders.

“Knowing that I’m first in both puts more pressure on me to try and go after it,” Valley said before the meet. “My goal is to win and get best times in both events.”

Kazokas agreed.

“There’s definitely more pressure,” Kazokas said. “The top three guys are all so close, so it’ll be a toss-up on who does the little things. I just want to get best times in both and score as high

as I possibly can.”

Valley and Kazokas may have felt some pressure heading into the state championships; but by the time they dived into the pool for their respective races, that pressure had all but slipped away.

Within a matter of hours, Valley and Kazokas captured three state titles. Valley finished first in the 200 freestyle (1:48.17) and 500 freestyle (4:43.56) while Kazokas finished first in the 100 freestyle (45.87), edging out Paxon’s Ian Apple by 0.04 second. Kazokas

also finished fifth in the 50 freestyle (21.24).

“It was really shocking at the time,” Valley said. “It means a lot to me considering, I’ve always wanted to win a state title to represent my school and my team.”

Valley edged Cece Williams, of Tallahassee Chiles, by more than a second in the 200 and easily won the 500, finishing 12 seconds ahead of Williams.

“It was really exciting to finish the 200 free and see a best time on the scoreboard, because I never thought I could go that time until it happened,” Valley said. “ But I’m also (pleased with) the 500, because I went a best time when

ic achievements, academic excellence and community leadership, after her mother, Sherri Lyn, mentioned it. Hoping to bring some recognition to Lakewood, McDermott submitted her application Oct. 2.

“I thought it would be nice to bring some recognition to Lakewood Ranch High School,” McDermott said. “I wouldn’t have accomplished anything without the coaches, teachers, etc., at Lakewood Ranch, and, of course, my family and friends, so I think they deserve to be praised for all that they’ve done.

“I also wanted to see where I stand among other student athletes in the country, and I can’t wait to meet the other national finalists in New York next month,” McDermott said.

On Oct. 24, McDermott was named Lakewood’s female school winner. From the 10,000 school winners that were chosen, 10 males and 10 females were named state finalists. Those 1,020 state finalists were then narrowed to 102 state winners and eventually down to 12 national finalists.

McDermott was selected based on her athletic and academic accomplishments along with her community leadership.

In addition to running cross country and track and playing soccer, McDermott, who maintains a 4.3 grade-point average, also is senior editor of the yearbook, co-president of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, president of Quill and Scroll, vice president of the student government association and a member of Lakewood leaders, the buddy program, National Honor Society and the senior advisory board, among other activity, club and community service.

“I thank God every day for this opportunity that he has given me,” McDermott said. “It’s one of those once-in-a-lifetime occurrences that I am never going to forget.”

With a passion for sports, traveling, writing and interacting with people, McDermott has aspirations of one day becoming a sports broadcaster or an editor for a fashion or sports magazine.

But for now, McDermott is focused on leading the Lady Mustangs cross country team back to the Class 3A state meet and preparing for her upcoming trip to New York City.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Lakewood Ranch High senior Devin McDermott is used to having all eyes on her.

As a three-sport athlete and news anchor for Lakewood’s TV production class, McDermott has become accustomed to being in front of a camera; and she doesn’t even think twice when a cameraman appears on campus.

Such was the case Nov. 10, when McDermott joined her fellow classmates in the school’s gymnasium for a senior assembly. It Devin McDermott wasn’t until Lakewood Athletic Director Shawn Trent mentioned the words Wendy’s Heisman that McDermott realized the camera was there for her.

McDermott was called up on stage, where she was presented with flowers, balloons and a silver medal after being named the Florida state female winner for the 2011 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.

But that wasn’t the only surprise the school had in store for McDermott. In addition, McDermott, who was selected from a pool of 48,000 applicants, was named one of 12 national finalists, six male and six female, for the award.

“When I discovered that I was a finalist, I think I said, ‘Wait, what? Really? No way!’”

McDermott said. “I was definitely shocked.

I had gone into this competition with really no expectations of what would happen, so every time I made it to the next round, I was so thankful.

“I was ecstatic to hear that I was one of the top six females,” she said. “It was a moment I can still play over and over in my head, and every time I do, I get so happy all over again.”

The national winners will be announced during the National Awards Banquet Dec. 9, in New York City. As a national finalist, McDermott received a gold medal, a Heisman patch and a $100 Wendy’s gift card.

In addition, Lakewood received a $2,000 award donated in McDermott’s name.

If McDermott is named a national winner, she’ll receive a $500 Wendy’s gift card, and Lakewood will receive $10,000.

+ Olivia Ortiz wins regional title Lakewood Ranch cross country star Olivia Ortiz captured her first regional title, finishing in 17:49 at the Class 3A-Region 3 meet Nov. 11, at Charlotte Sports Park in Port Charlotte.

Ortiz, who has only lost twice this season, helped power the Lady Mustangs to a secondplace finish and a berth in next week’s Class 3A state meet at Little Everglades Ranch in Dade City. Lakewood scored 68 points to finish behind Estero (33).

Devin McDermott finished 11th in 19:23 followed by Natalie Novak (13th, 19:37), Katie Wray (24th, 20:20), Ashley Platt (27th, 20:27), Michelle Last (35th, 20:39) and Emily Perez (51st, 21:07). + EMB win Don Clarke Bowl Series The East Manatee Bulldog Pee Wee team defeated the New Tampa Wildcats 18-0 to win the Don Clark Bowl Series Championship Nov. 5.

Jernard Porter caught a touchdown pass from Cody Staton and rushed in for another score to lead the way for the Bulldogs. Noah Benghuzzi also added a touchdown run. Chase Tench had an interception to lead the way defensively, along with Cole Haddad and Matthew Strauss.

The Junior Pee Wee team also won its bowl game 27-18.

+ Southeast girls claim district title The Southeast High girls cross country team captured the Class 2A-District 10 championship Nov. 4 at the Premier Sports Campus at Lakewood Ranch.

The Lady Seminoles scored 15 points to finish ahead of DeSoto (44).

Isabel Panganiban finished second overall in 23:40 to lead the way for Southeast. Lindsay Wheeler finished fourth in 23:56 followed by Madeline Black (fifth, 23:59), Kristen Kubecka (sixth, 24:23), Zoe Hawkins-Smyk (eighth, 25:15), Tia Borso (11th, 26:39) and Penny Rief (18th, 28:32).

Thirteen-year-old Scott Covino recently won the statewide Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge competition in Kissimmee. The Nolan Middle School eighth-grader scored 240 points in the final round to win the competition. Here is an inside look at this week’s Athlete of the Week.

What was your reaction when you won the competition?

I was happy, because there was another kid who was really good.

How did you get into soccer?

I started playing when I was 4 years old. It was just fun and exciting.

What do you enjoy the most about soccer?

Scoring. You win by scoring, and the team loves you if you win the game by scoring.

Do you play any other sports?

I played basketball and baseball before, but I didn’t like them as much as soccer.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

Italy. I hear the food’s good.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

Invisibility. You can sneak around (if you’re invisible).

If you could play one other sport for a day, what would it be?

Surfing. It just looks really cool riding the waves in Hawaii.

Pasta.

I have five fish.

Behind Valley’s two state titles, the Lady Mustangs scored 99 points to finish sixth overall, while the Lakewood boys team finished ninth with 85.5 points.

This year marked Valley’s third appearance in the state championships and Kazokas’ fourth, but this is the first time the two have won state titles.

However, that doesn’t mean the two, who also both swim for the Sarasota Sharks, haven’t racked up their share of accolades.

The two have a combined seven school records, including relays, and have won numerous county, district and regional titles.

Valley also qualified for the Olympic Trials last summer in the 400 and 800 freestyles and will compete in the trials in July.

“I don’t think I knew I got them,” Valley said of making the cut. “I’m glad I got it.

I’ve always wanted to go to the Olympics.”

Valley and Kazokas have both been swimming for as long as they can remember. Valley was 4 years old when she joined her first summer league and learned how to swim.

“My mom wanted to make sure I could swim,” Valley said. “We had a pool, and she didn’t want me to drown.”

Kazokas also was 4 years old when he learned to swim. At the time, he didn’t really have a choice. Growing up along the Santa Fe River just north of Gainesville,

Shortly after learning of the violation, Engelberger approached Braden River Athletic Director Bob Bowling, who said Carley was ineligible. Although Bowling told Engelberger he could appeal the decision, the odds of winning weren’t high.

After discussing the matter with his daughter, Engelberger appealed the decision and went to court Nov. 2.

“At first, I thought maybe they’ll make an exception,” Carley said. “He teaches and, of course, I’m his daughter. … I wasn’t very confident though. I started to doubt and prepared myself for the worst.”

the Kazokas family learned to recognize its local alligators. And when they were sure they weren’t interested in them, the family would jump in — or in some cases get tossed in — and swim across the river.

“It wasn’t fun when you’re 7 years old,” Kazokas said.

The two continued to swim leisurely and on the occasional summer league before joining the Sharks prior to the start of high school.

Kazokas started out doing the backstroke, finishing second in the 100 backstroke at last year’s state championships, before switching to freestyle this year.

“I wanted to try something different,” Kazokas said. “I’m fast. I’ve never been a distance swimmer. I’m really big, and most sprinters are big. I like to get in and get it over with. I have no stamina.”

Valley, on the other hand, always gravitated toward distance swimming.

“I can’t sprint,” Valley said. “It’s painful, and it’s boring, but I guess that’s why (I do it).”

Today, Valley and Kazokas train six days a week, attending both 4 a.m. morning practices followed by after school practices three days a week.

The two admit some days they would rather do anything but swim, but that’s simply not an option.

“It just gets in your blood,” Kazokas said.

“You can’t stop.”

Their persistence paid off. The jurors sided with Engelberger and his daughter.

“They understood — they got it,” Engelberger said. “I cried. All of the emotion and what we went through … it was very emotional. She plays because of me and then she wasn’t going to be able to play because of me.”

Shortly after receiving the court’s decision, Engelberger told his daughter the news.

“I came down the stairs and he said, ‘Go get your uniform; you’ve got practice,’” Carley said. “My mouth dropped open.”

Since then, Carley has returned to the JV sidelines where she has helped lead Braden River to a 2-2 record. Later this season Carley hopes to join her father on the sidelines in preparation for the district tournament.

And although their regional final loss may have initially left a bitter taste in their mouths, the Lady Mustangs should always remember just how great their season was every time they walk into the gymnasium and see the volleyball banner hanging from the rafters — a banner that is no longer blank.

And with the majority of its roster returning next season, including junior MVP Mariah Robertson, Lakewood’s future only looks brighter.

Chili competition sizzles on Ranch Main Street East County residents enjoyed an afternoon of food and fun during the fourth annual Chili Cook-Off Nov. 13 on Main Street in Lakewood Ranch.

Guests sampled a variety of chili, as Manatee County Emergency Services battled for the title of the county’s best chili.

Those in attendance also enjoyed listening to the sounds of Paper Airplanes, got an up close look at several fire trucks and ambulances and climbed a rock wall, among other games and activities.

Manatee County Public Safety ECC and EMS, who participated for the first time, made buffalo chicken chili.

Bluegrass fans flock to Linger Lodge festival Ten Florida-based bluegrass bands strummed into the East County for the first Rocky Bottom Bluegrass Festival Nov. 12, at Linger Lodge. The daylong event featured plenty of music, food and a variety of vendors.

Four years ago, she watched a timid home-schooled girl blossom into a scene-stealing soloist in “Seussical.” The girl even nailed the show’s curtain speech.

And, then, there’s the case of

her 26-year-old niece, whom Schroeder watched grow up on stage at The Players.

“She used to be afraid to go up to the deli counter,” Schroeder recalls. “I can’t even tell you how many shows she danced in here. Now as an adult, she’s a social butterfly.

It’s made me think that maybe I shouldn’t have fought my mom so hard on the French horn thing.”

‘Electricity’ “It’s excerpts from various Broadway shows, including ‘Mary Poppins,’ ‘Wicked’ and ‘Legally Blonde.’ The best number was ‘Sister Christian’ from ‘Rock of Ages,’ because the kids learned sign language. They signed as they were singing. It was an incredible way to end the show.”
