cess consultant Lorraine M. Vervoordt all have applied to become the new Sarasota County administrator. A sixth applicant — Barry R. Lewis Jr., of Rockaway, N.J. — practiced law in Sarasota from 1991 to 1995. Since 1998, he has
held positions in government administration. He has been manager and chief financial officer for the Borough of Mountain Lakes, N.J., since 2009. Altogether, The Mercer Group, which the County Commission hired as a consultant to under-
take the search, received 45 applications by the end of the day Oct. 21 — the deadline for submitting resumés. The County Commission Nov. 2 will receive the top 15 applications from The

New program emerges to help the homeless The City Commission Monday voiced support for a program called Street Teams, in which groups of homeless people would undertake Public Works Department jobs downtown. As early as January, the city of Sarasota and the Salvation Army could be collaborating on a new program designed to help members of the homeless population find gainful employment. Called Street Teams, the con-
cept is modeled on a program that has been under way since January 2009 in Daytona Beach. During the City Commission’s special meeting Monday, in which it acted as the Community Redevelopment Agency, Vice Mayor
Terry Turner said he recently had discussed Street Teams with Salvation Army officials in Sarasota. “(They) have a very disciplined approach to helping people,” he said. Commissioner Paul Caragiulo
