Q&A with former City Editor Shay Sullivan The Longboat Key and Sarasota areas will forever be part of the nation’s collective memory of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks: President George W. Bush stayed the night of Sept. 10 at the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort, on Longboat Key, and he was reading to second-graders at Emma E. Booker Elementary School, in Sarasota, when American Airlines Flight 11 hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

On pages 3A to 12A, in this special issue commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, you’ll meet nine local people and hear their stories of that fateful day: a former Longboat Key resident who was on the 61st floor in the South Tower of the World Trade Center when the terrorist attacks occurred; an American Airlines pilot whose Boeing 767 took off from John F. Kennedy International Airport seven minutes after the first plane struck; a documentary filmmaker who filmed the towers as they fell.

On pages 8A and 9A, we recount the events leading up to, on and after Sept. 11 — from Bush’s arrival on the Key to the aftermath of the attacks.

Describe your morning on Sept. 11. What was it like in the newsroom?

That morning, I went straight to a meeting of the Sullivan planning board at Town Hall.

We were in the midst of a typically dry discussion when (Town Manager) Bruce St. Denis informed us that the first plane hit.

None of us knew what to think. It seemed like a horrible but random event. The meeting continued.

But shortly thereafter, Bruce informed us about the second plane crash, and the meeting quickly wrapped up. I rushed back to the office to see what was happening. Everybody was tense.

When more crashes were reported, I was perhaps the most panicked.

In the weeks that followed, the Longboat Observer, and, specifically, your stories, became a focus of the Secret Service’s investigations locally.

I did not know what to make of (former Longboat Key Fire Marshal) Carroll (Mooneyhan)’s story about men in a van coming up to the Colony to interview the president. At the time, we had

a couple of reports about “Middle Eastern-looking men” in vans. Moreover, Carroll didn’t see anything firsthand.

He overheard an agent discussing the incident, so my info was third-hand.

I knew he told the story earnestly during a lull in a firefighters union meeting.

I believed it more than usual, because he was not telling it to me directly. He was telling a colleague.

The day after we went to print, he went silent. I wasn’t sure what that meant. Maybe he had exaggerated. Or maybe he was ordered to stop talking about it. We seemed to get the same order when the Secret Service agents visited (Executive Editor) Lisa (Walsh) and me. They suggested we back off the story, which in my mind made it more real.

Things got even weirder as news about the hijackers came out and we learned some of them trained close by in Venice. Then, we got a report of Mohamed Atta being spotted in the Holiday Inn bar days before the presidential visit.

We also had a strange police report about the FBI being interested in some sort of sheik who owned a Longboat business in the northern plaza. The business quickly changed hands afterward.

I couldn’t believe that our little island seemed to be embroiled in international affairs. To this day, I don’t know what was real and what was falsehood produced by the “Crucible”-esque paranoia of post-9/11 America.

What was your goal as a reporter during this time? What was your responsibility as a Longboat Observer

reporter?

Our boss, Matt (Walsh), made things simple. “Tell the truth,” or “Write the facts,” he would say when asked for advice. So, I did my best to write what happened, no more and no less.

What are your most memorable moments following this story?

As the story about men interviewing the president went to print, I went to Islands of Adventure with my parents for a couple of days. The trip had been planned months beforehand. The first night in my hotel, I remember watching the news and learning that a fake TV crew blew themselves up and assassinated a leader in Afghanistan.

I couldn’t sleep. It was like a plot twist in a movie. I was suddenly convinced our country had narrowly escaped a presidential assassination on 9/11. As horrendous as that day was, it is terrifying to think of how much worse things could have been.

How does the anniversary of 9/11 make you feel? Does it conjure up any specific feelings for you?

Every year, I view pictures and YouTube footage of the planes crashing, the smoke, the people jumping to their death to escape fire. I invariably cry.

Do you have any plans to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11?

Yes, I plan to teach more than 100 high school seniors about the day and have them write about it. This year’s students were in second grade when the planes hit. Soon I will be teaching students who don’t remember that day at all. Americans took an oath to never forget what happened on 9/11. By teaching students about the day, I am doing my part to uphold that oath.

Daniel Hoffe Daniel Hoffe was attending a training program in the South Tower of the World Trade Centers when the Sept. 11 attacks occurred.

Daniel Hoffe’s license plate now reads: “Carpe Diem.”

He doesn’t remember when he changed it, but it was sometime after 9/11. Since that day, the former Longboat Key resident thinks he had become more grateful for life, more spiritually in touch and more willing to hug the people he loves.

“Every day, I’m more appreciative,” Hoffe said. “I think of everything I’ve done in the past 10 years. And I think it could have been stolen from me.”

He was in the South Tower of the World Trade Center for his second day of a three-week Morgan Stanley training program on the morning of Sept.

11. He was on the 61st floor, probably for a coffee break when American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower.

He didn’t see the impact but saw the tower ablaze and thousands of documents pouring from the skyscraper.

Hoffe and others made their way down the stairwell in the South Tower.

“As we’re walking down, there was an announcement that Tower One had been struck but Tower Two was secure,” he said. “I remember thinking, ‘Thank God, we’re safe.’ Maybe five or 10 seconds later, the second plane struck. When that hit us, my first thought was, ‘We almost made it.’”

Hoffe said those inside the stairwell didn’t know at the time the building had been struck. They felt the building shake and sway and felt the smoke blow up from beneath them while jet fuel poured down the HVAC, but he thought the impact could have been the result of damage to the North Tower.

In that narrow stairwell, Hoffe recalls the way people instantly bonded with the person walking next to them.

“You became a team,” Hoffe said.

“The guy next to me, I think, was from EuroBrothers. It was like, ‘The ninth floor. Thank God it hasn’t collapsed.

The eighth floor. We’ve made it another floor.’”

They came out through the mall underneath the World Trade Center.

“When we got back, I was so happy to have the blue sky above me,” Hoffe said. “That was my goal. I turned around, and the thing I’ll never forget is this beautiful sky and then that horrible sight. My first thought was, ‘This can’t be happening.’ My second thought was, ‘This can’t be happening to me.’”

While some people wanted to stay and see what was happening, Hoffe insisted on leaving and walking toward mid-town — something that, in retrospect, he considers the best decision of his life.

It wasn’t until he spoke to utility workers who told him that the Pentagon also had been hit that he realized the magnitude of the day’s event.

Hoffe isn’t sure when he realized the South Tower had collapsed. But at some point, as he walked, he turned around and saw that the tower no longer stood.

day was his wife. He left her a message saying that a plane had hit the tower, that he was OK and that he was trying to reach her while sirens blared in the background. He still has that message — an eerie reminder of that day’s tragedy.

Hoffe stayed in New York for the next three days before driving back to the Sarasota area. Immediately upon his return, he and other survivors began giving talks about their experiences on Sept. 11 to raise money for the New York Firefighters Benevolent Fund.

“It was cathartic to be able to get out and do something,” Hoffe said. “The real heroes of that day were the firefighters and those who lost their lives.”

Later, they directed their energy toward “Triumph Over Tragedy,” an event held on the one-year anniversary of Sept. 11 that raised more than $100,000 to purchase lifesaving equipment for

the Sarasota County Fire Department.

Hoffe said this year, he plans to attend the 9/11 Memorial March and Celebration in Payne Park. There, he’ll say a few words at a ceremony of remembrance. He also will be speaking at “Triumph Over Tragedy: Remembering 9/11 a Decade Later” at 4 p.m.

For Hoffe, now 45, Sept. 11 of every year brings him back to that tragic day of 2001. But he doesn’t want to forget it, because he believes that if people forget, history could repeat itself. His desk at Sarasota’s BB&T, where he is now vice president and wealth management adviser, faces a series of five photographs his friend took of the first plane hitting the North Tower.

“You don’t want to let people forget,” he said. “Part of me will always be in that stairwell.”

Every day I’m more appreciative. I think of everything I’ve done in the past 10 years. And I think it could have been stolen from me.

WHERE WERE YOU? The Longboat Observer asked readers to share their memories of Sept. 11.

My wife and I were seated outside the Columbia Restaurant on St. Armands Circle on the evening of Sept. 10, 2001. Very unusual for St. Armands Circle was the absence of vehicles parked along the road, which was the route President (George W.) Bush’s caravan would take on its way to the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort on Longboat Key, where he would spend the night. Just past his route on the Circle, the usual number of vehicles were parked; it was interesting to watch four men in a nondescript car stop and inspect the SUV parked closest to his route; all got out and looked under and around the car then got back in the car and proceeded on their way.

It was not long before the procession of six to eight all-black vehicles, primarily SUVs with the windows tinted intensely dark, drove past us, accompanied by a lot of police cars and motorcycles. The only view we had of people inside the vehicles was through the windshield; someone from each vehicle was waving, but we could not tell who they were. We watched as police on motorcycles blocked the intersections where streets connected to his route, and then, when the caravan passed, they would rush to the next intersection before the caravan arrived.

An hour or so later that evening, we could see up the beach from our condo on Longboat Key and saw boats patrolling outside the Colony. Wonder what it would have been like if 9/11 had taken place before his visit to Sarasota?

The next morning, Sept. 11, 2001, I had a tee time with my golfing buddies at Sara Bay Country Club, and my wife was dropping me off there. Somehow, we knew when Bush’s caravan was due at Booker Elementary School, and we could see Gulf of Mexico Drive from our condo. The president’s caravan was a little late, but we watched as the caravan of all-black vehicles and the usual escorts made its way toward the school.

We departed soon afterward; we heard about a plane crashing into one of the twin towers at the World Trade Center as we listened to the radio. Of course, like many others in the nation, we thought it was an accident, but before we arrived at Sara Bay, the second plane flew into the other tower. As we made our way, we were caught behind the caravan taking Bush to Air Force One, which held us up for several minutes.

We arrived at Sara Bay Country Club, which is near the Sarasota/Bradenton Airport, in time to see Air Force One become airborne. It was shocking to me because it looked like a fighter jet taking off. During the early 1970s, my business was located close to the new Kansas City International Airport. Before it opened to commercial traffic, the runways were used

by TWA to practice landings and takeoffs for the newly introduced Boeing 747s. We watched them lumber along; sometimes it appeared they were barely able to take off as they climbed to altitude at a shallow angle. I was totally amazed at the angle a 747 could climb out. At that time, we did not know that other planes had been hijacked; we played our golf match and had no information about all the destruction.

After the golf match, we learned more, and we rushed to a TV. My golf buddies gathered at our condo and watched the events on television. Like most of the world, my wife and I watched TV almost constantly. Sadly thereafter, our airline travel and our lives became much more complicated.

One phone call. That’s all it took to get into the same room with the president.

Of course, the government wanted the press in place well before Bush’s scheduled statement at 9:30 a.m. I pulled into Emma E. Booker Elementary before 7 a.m., walked through a metal detector and received my credentials.

“Sept. 11, 2001,” they read. “Trip to the President.”

That’s all it was supposed to be.

Within seconds of American Airlines Flight 11 striking 1 World Trade Center, reporters’ cell phones started ringing.

The first report: A Cessna has hit the World Trade Center.

But then, calls kept coming. No, not a Cessna. Something bigger. A commercial plane.

By 9 a.m., we all were huddled into a storage room where the school kept its audio/visual equipment. There was one TV. And for the next 30 minutes, we watched — over and over again — that first plane. Then, the second plane. Over and over again.

It looked fake — like something out of a Michael Bay movie. The room, crammed with at least 40 people whose profession is communication, was silent.

At precisely 9:30 a.m., Bush emerged to take the podium. The school had assembled a backdrop of students and teachers — all of whom seemed unaware of what was happening.

“Today, we’ve had a national tragedy,” he said. “Two airplanes have crashed into the World Trade Center in an apparent terrorist attack on our country.”

With my left hand, I held up my tiny digital point-and-click, firing shot after shot as quickly as it would allow. With my right hand, I steadied my notepad on my knee as my pen attempted to capture every word. Bush was in and out in less than five minutes.

I rushed back to the East County Observer office with my notes and photos. By the time I had reached Lakewood Ranch, the South Tower had collapsed. The Longboat Observer was going to press that afternoon, and fellow reporter Mischa Viera and I were tasked with working on a story for its deadline. By that afternoon, I must have seen those buildings collapse thousands of times. The day was relentless.

All I wanted was for it to be over.

MAKING HISTORY

As he crawled through the debris, his body covered in thick cement, Paul Berriff remembers thinking, “This is it. I’m going to die.”

The documentary maker had survived a volcano explosion in Nicaragua and a helicopter crash in the Scottish Highlands. He had jumped from a sinking ship in the North Sea. But as the blackness set in, he thought his life was about to end.

The day had started out normally for Berriff, then a Longbeach Village resident who was filming a 15-part series for the Discovery Channel’s Animal Planet about the law-enforcement branch of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty for Animals. When the North Tower was hit, he and two crew members headed to Manhattan, N.Y., to investigate. They said they would be back in an hour.

They never returned.

“We were driving toward lower Manhattan and could see smoke drifting across the tower,” Berriff said. “When the smoke emerged, we saw it wasn’t one but two towers on fire.”

They saw dots appear from the top of each tower and then disappear. Those dots were likely the first jumpers.

“I actually saw history being made. I was in it and tasted it and smelled it.” that point, but we made our way to the towers,” Berriff said. “Everybody was going the other way.”

They heard a large explosion as the South Tower began to collapse. As the firefighters shouted, “Run, run, run!” Berriff filmed for about six seconds before he took off running. But as he ran, he kept his camera filming and facing behind him; the footage he captured would later be played on news broadcasts and documentaries throughout the world.

The next thing Berriff remembers is his camera leaving his hand, almost in slow motion.

“It went black,” Berriff said. “I didn’t know it then, but I’d been knocked out for about 30 minutes. There was

this black, thick cement in my mouth, nose and eyes.

The next thing I remember is crawling through all this debris.”

At this point, he believed he would die, but his survival instincts kicked in. He waved his hands in the debris, feeling for motor vehicles, which he knew were parked on a side street. He thought that he could escape by following the vehicles toward the Hudson River.

Soon, he had a horrible feeling: He couldn’t find his sound engineer. He decided to backtrack to the scene, where he found his camera and the crew’s soundtrack.

(He later learned she had been pulled from the debris and was not severely injured.)

“I took in this unbelievable, apocalyptic sight,” Berriff said. “The fire trucks were all on fire, and you could see the skeletal remains of one of the buildings.”

Berriff made his way back to the apartment he was renting with his wife, Mickey — just 300 or 400 feet away from the scene. He didn’t realize then that his shirt was covered in blood. His wife then took him to University Hospital in Staten Island, N.Y., where he was treated and released within three hours.

Paul Berriff was filming an Animal Planet series Sept. 11 in Manhattan, N.Y., when he heard that the North Tower of the World Trade Center had been struck by a plane.

Looking back on Sept. 11, Berriff recalls how a splitsecond decision for many determined who lived and who died. Many who ran toward the left or toward the right when the South Tower began to collapse died; those who ran straight ahead, as he did, survived.

Berriff returned to his native England shortly after Sept. 11 but also returned to New York and spent the next year filming a documentary, “9/11: The Firefighters’ Story.”

“I don’t think they’ll ever come to terms with what happened,” Berriff said of the firefighters. “They talked about it every day.

Everybody knew somebody who had died in the collapse.”

Berriff said it was therapeutic for both himself and the firefighters he filmed to talk about what had happened in the months following Sept. 11. But Berriff, who currently is shooting a documentary about the U.S. Border Patrol in the Phoenix area, thinks of what he experienced that day as part of his work.

“I think, because of the work I do, I think of it as one of my stories,” Berriff said. “I actually saw history being made. I was in it and tasted it and smelled it.”

Post 9/11: era of endless war?

Come Sunday, millions of Americans will relive that day — Sept. 11, 2001. Its billowing images of horror are etched forever in our minds.

We will recall where we were. We will remember the feelings that coursed through our minds and bodies as we watched — stricken, helpless and in shock.

And when we see, again and again, the surreal, horrific images on television of the World Trade Center buildings collapsing, the airliner slamming into the Pentagon and the bomb-like hole of Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pa., the pictures will rekindle a sense of near-unbridled anger over the 2,977 innocent lives lost on that day.

And in spite of the death of Osama bin Laden, 10 years later, we still want justice, we still want revenge.

One of the remarkable aspects of this story is how our little corner of the world — Longboat Key, Sarasota and Venice — were direct participants in that tragic Day of Infamy. Of all the places in the world, our three little towns and cities, nestled on the balmy, peaceful Gulf Coast of Southwest Florida, were among the launch points and starting points of the events of the day.

The Venice airport, we subsequently learned, served as a flight-school for a few of the terrorists. Longboat Key’s Colony Beach & Tennis Resort was the overnight home base for President George W. Bush the night before the attacks. It was also a target, the Longboat Observer later learned from witnesses, of a van full of Middle Easterners posing as TV journalists who wanted to film the president, but who were rebuffed at the Colony’s guard gate. To this day, the speculation is they were terrorists who wanted to assassinate President Bush the same way disguised Al-Queda terrorists two days earlier assassinated Ahmad Shah Massoud, the Afghani government’s top anti-Taliban general.

And, finally, Sarasota — in particular, the second-grade class of Sandra Kay Daniels at Emma Booker Elementary School — was where President Bush’s aide, Andrew Card, interrupted the president’s reading class and whispered in his ear that the United States was under attack.

President Bush recalled for National Geographic TV that in those minutes Daniels’ class and went into a makeshift holding room, where he quickly scribbled a statement to be delivered to a worldwide audience. He told National Geographic that he reminded himself that he needed to appear calm and in control. History undoubtedly will remember that the way Bush responded and led in the days and weeks that followed were truly heroic.

Still no definitive victory

Almost 10 years later, on May 2, 2011, U.S. Navy Seals killed Osama bin Laden, the most-hated man in America, the diabolical bearded leader of the terrorists.

In the hours after his death, many Americans celebrated in the streets of the nation’s capital. Justice at last.

But with so much time and the subsequent events in between 9/11 and bin Laden’s death — the Iraq war … no Iraqi weapons of mass destruction …

THE NEW NORM: ENDLESS WAR? “This the American era of endless war …

“In previous decades, the military and the American public viewed war as an aberration and peace as the norm.

“Today, radical religious ideologies, new technologies and cheap, powerful weapons have catapulted the world into ‘a period of persistent conflict,’ according to the Pentagon’s last major assessment of global security. ‘No one should harbor the illusion that the developed world can win this conflict in the near future,’ the document concludes.

“By this logic, America’s wars are unending and any talk of peace is quixotic or naive …

“One lesson of today’s endless war seems to be that Americans will have to learn to live with the a certain amount of insecurity and fear.”

Saddam Hussein’s capture and death … free, democratic votes in Iraq … the succession of terrorist attacks around the world … Mumbai, London, Madrid, Bali, Israel … attempted but foiled attacks on the United States … Fort Hood, Texas … the Arab spring … and the continuing war against the Taliban in Afghanistan — for many of us, there still is no sense of victory, no vindication, no sense of complete justice.

Sadly, the “war on terrorism” persists.

Indeed, it’s remarkable to think how so many churches and Masses around the world have offered the same “prayer of the faithful” every day for the past 10 years: “We pray for the end of the war on terror and the conversion of the terrorists from

the worship of death and destruction to the worship a God of love and peace.” But it goes on.

As noted in the box, the Washington Post this week assessed this state of affairs as the new norm — endless war.

It’s not like World War II, when we confronted government-sponsored enemies and decided there was one definitive option — them or us. The way to end it all was mass destruction of the enemy empires, even if it meant thousands and thousands of civilian casualties.

This used to be how nations’ leaders viewed war. Indeed, the belief went, when a nation’s political leaders chose to be violent aggressors, they in turn chose to put at risk their nation’s entire population, sacrificing the innocent lives of their citizenry, all because of their selfish desires for power.

And even though President Bush vowed after 9/11 that those nations harboring terrorists would not be spared, our political and military leaders have adopted the view that the war on terrorism is not a war that can be confined to political and geographic borders. To paraphrase retired Marine Col. John Saputo of Longboat Key, it’s a war of killing one terrorist at a time.

Time is running out

Perhaps this is the new norm. But we also know, definitively, we are living in denial. Everyone knows the roots and money behind this worldwide terrorism is centered in one place: Iran. And time is running out. The most crucial question in this post-9/11 era is whether the United States and its allies will let Iran complete its development of nuclear weapons.

In the recent memoirs of Reza Kahlili, author of “A Time to Betray,” a book about his double life as a CIA agent in Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, Kahlili (a pseudonym for his protection) states definitively: “Now, we are running out of time because the Iranians — with the help of North Korea and China — are developing nuclear warheads. They now have over 1,000 ballistic missiles, including missiles that can hit every capital in Europe, and they’re working with North Korea to develop intercontinental ballistic missiles.

“Once they get the bomb, all bets are off. It’s checkmate. They will arm Hamas, Hezbollah, Syria, Venezuela and others. Every U.S. ally in the region and throughout the world will be a possible target. Israel will be destroyed. America will either be hit or live in constant fear of it. And Iran will substantially control the world’s energy resources … ” Come Sunday, we will mourn again the 3,000 lives lost on 9/11 and the 4,000 American soldiers’ lives lost in the war on terror hence. Justice will never be served for them. But we will honor them, especially those who have made and continue to make the ultimate sacrifice.

And we will continue to pray — for the end of the war on terror, the end of “the era of endless war”; and for the courage to do what must be done to preserve and ensure what we cherish most: our life and our liberty.

Al Gore had stayed with us the year before while he was preparing for the debates. Because the vice president had just been there, the Secret Service knew the property and could secure it in just four days. This time, we not only had the president and all of his top-ranking officials but also the White House Press Corps, so we set up the conference-room area for them to file stories.

The president arrived in his state-of-the-art limo. John McKay, whom I’ve known for 25 years, got out, and I hugged him. Then, Jeb (Bush) got out, and I’ve met him maybe 50 times, so I gave him a hug. Then, the president got out of the limo and joked, “I don’t know if I should hug you.

Are you family?”

All of the staff and volunteers were in a small area and had been told to keep quiet. Suzy (Bassett Klauber), Tommy (Klauber) and I stood at the door to greet him. As soon as he passed us, he went to that room to greet every single one of them.

When he came down for dinner, he was very relaxed. Tommy picked his favorite Tex-Mex menu.

The next day started early when the president went for his run. Later, he came down the stairs at 8:23 a.m. (on his way to Emma Booker Elementary School). My father and I walked him to his limo. I offered my appreciation to him for his selecting Sarasota for his trip and acknowledging our schools and kids.

Then, my father and I went over to the restaurant for coffee to debrief and decompress. One of my employees came over and said he thought I would want to see the TV. He said, “You’ve got to see it, this place is on fire.” We thought he was saying the Colony was on fire, but then we real-

ized it was the World Trade Center.

My first instinct was to run to the head of detail who had become like a friend over the past few days. They were only starting to get bits and pieces of it. We didn’t know in those few hours whether the president would be coming back to the Colony. Staff was concerned we could become a potential target. We learned the president would not be going back.

The rest of the time, I was stationed in the room with White House staff and the military team. At one point, I was acting as their eyes and ears for everything that was going on on the television. They were so tied to their radios that they were using me as their reporter on what was happening on the news. At the time, I had no idea of the magnitude of what we were doing.

Someone asked me the other day when we realized the magnitude of what was happening.

I don’t think you ever do. We went from this incredible high — and it truly is a high when you perform for that level of a guest — to such a state of fear and confusion. Even looking back, I’m not sure any of us understood how great an event it was.

As head of the Republican Party of Sarasota County at the time, we had gotten a call Wednesday the week prior letting us know that (President George W.) Bush had chosen Emma Booker Elementary School. That weekend, I had a trip scheduled to visit colleges with my daughters.

On Friday, I got a call from Kathleen Shannahan, chief of staff for Gov. Jeb Bush, who said, “Tramm, the governor would like you to join him for dinner with his brother on Monday night.”

On Monday afternoon, my wife met me at the airport with a change of clothes.

The dinner felt like old friends getting together. There was a lot of bantering. We talked about Sen. Fred Thompson and whether he was going to run for re-election. The president thought he would run, but I interjected that I didn’t think he would run. I said I’d bet the president $5; we stood up and shook on it. It lasted about two or two-and-ahalf hours. After we broke, we took photographs, and he left the room.

The next morning, I had been invited to either go to the school where Bush was speaking or to tour Air Force One at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport.

Jay Crouse and I drove to the airport and arrived there around 9:15.

When we arrived, we could tell something was up. The Secret Service agents said, “We’re sorry, but the president will have to leave quickly.”

We were escorted down the tarmac and stood with the press corps.

By that time, their phones were going off, and we heard news of the World Trade Center. The motorcade came speeding around the corner at the airport. Everyone started hustling onto Air Force One on the back end. The president went in the front, turned around and waved quickly, and the door closed instantly. The plane left the air at an incredible incline. At that time, we still did not know the full impact of what had happened.

Early September • As the dead days of September begin, longtime Colony Beach & Tennis Resort owner Dr. Murray “Murf” Klauber lectures his daughter, Colony President/ General Manager Katie Moulton, and their controller that the resort needs more business. The controller, remembering the summer before, when Vice President Al Gore visited while preparing for presidential debates, jokes that Moulton needs a call from her “friends at the White House.” About an hour later, Moulton gets a call from the White House, telling her that a high-ranking official was planning to visit the area.

• 6:10 p.m. — As the crowd hears the roar of motorcycles, it moves closer to the pavement but is shooed back by a patrolman.

• 6:15 p.m. — Bush arrives at the Colony in his limousine with several high-ranking Republican officials including his brother, Gov. Jeb Bush, and former State Senate President John McKay. Moulton embraces McKay and Gov. Bush, both of whom are friends. Bush then jokes to Moulton: “I don’t know if I should hug you. Are you family?” He goes on to greet staff and volunteers before dinner.

• 7 p.m. — Bush, his brother and 11 others gather in the private Colony dining room for a Tex-Mex dinner prepared

Tuesday, Sept. 11 • 6 a.m. — Longboat Key Fire Marshal Carroll Mooneyhan is at the front desk of the Colony while Bush prepares for his morning jog. Mooneyhan overhears a conversation between a Colony receptionist and security guard. The two

discuss that a van occupied by men of Middle Eastern descent had pulled up to the Colony, and the men said they had a poolside interview with the president.

The self-proclaimed reporters asked for a Secret Service agent by name. Security guards relayed the request to the receptionist, who had not heard of either the agent or a scheduled interview, and she gave the phone to a nearby Secret Service agent who said the same thing.

The van’s occupants were told to contact the president’s public relations office in Washington, D.C., and were turned away.

The incident remains unverified by the FBI. • 6:30 a.m. — Bush begins a four-mile jog along the Gulf of Mexico.

• 8:23 a.m. — Bush walks down the stairs of the Colony, headed to his limousine. Moulton thanks him for spotlighting the children of Sarasota as he gets in his limo en route to Booker Elementary.

• 8:46 a.m. — American Airlines Flight 11 strikes the North Tower.

• 8:47 a.m. — Longboat Key Village resident Paul Berriff is in New York City filming a 15-part series for the Discovery Channel’s Animal Planet called “Animal Precinct,” a documentary about the law enforcement unit of the ASPCA. While the filmmakers were getting organized, someone informed them that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center.

“Let’s get down there,” Berriff said.

• 8:50 a.m. — Marvin Peters, of Longboat Key, is standing on the Sarasota bayfront to watch Bush’s motorcade go by. He says he saw a van with two “Middle Eastern men screaming out of the windows, ‘Down with Bush’ and raising their fists in the air.”

• 8:51 a.m. — Bush arrives at Booker

According to Bill Sammon’s “Fighting Back,” before Bush heads into the school, he speaks to National Security Adviser Condoleeza Rice, who tells him that a plane has hit the World Trade Center. “That’s one terrible pilot,” he said to White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card before speculating about whether the pilot could have suffered a heart attack.

• 9:02 a.m. — United Airlines Flight 175 strikes the South Tower.

• 9:05 a.m. — As Bush listens to secondgraders read a story, Card whispers in his ear that a second plane has hit the World Trade Center.

• 9:05 a.m. — Berriff and his film crew jump into his Jeep and drive down the east side of Manhattan, down FDR Drive.

Traffic is slow and emergency vehicles are coming down the road at the same time.

“I could see the smoke,” said Berriff. “I wondered why smoke was coming from both towers but realized a second one had gone in. As we got near the tower, we could see people jumping from the tower.”

• 9:15 a.m. — Bush leaves the classroom and goes to a holding room at the school, where he is briefed by staff.

• 9:15 a.m. — Berriff gets his vehicle through the police corridors with his television film pass. Authorities wave the crew through, and they make it to a half-mile from the World Trade Center.

• 9:30 a.m. — Bush addresses the world for the first time from the media center

at Booker Elementary. He says there has been “an apparent terrorist attack on our country.”

• 9:40 a.m. — Both buildings are ablaze, and Berriff decides to get close to make a documentary about the terrorist attacks.

“None of us anticipated what would happen in the next 20 minutes,” he said.

“We interviewed eyewitnesses and continually made our way to the base of the towers where the rescue efforts would be mounted.”

• 9:43 a.m. — American Airlines Flight 77 crashes into the Pentagon.

• 9:55 a.m. — Bush arrives at SarasotaBradenton International Airport and heads straight to Air Force One. He waves briefly to the crowd before entering the aircraft, which departs immediately.

• 10 a.m. — Berriff films some firefighters walking across to the building. “Suddenly, there’s a massive explosion,” he said. “I panned my camera up to the towers to see this avalanche coming down toward us, but it wasn’t snow. For a minute, we just sort of froze, but I was just shooting.

It took us a minute to realize the building was coming down toward us. We shouted, ‘Run! Run! We started running south on West Street. I turned back to see this avalanche of concrete and girders spreading out on top of us. I continued running. I thought this was the end. I have been in many disasters, but I thought this one was going to capture me.”

• 10:20 a.m. — Berriff and his crew are overwhelmed by the debris and the cloud of darkness. “It just hit,” he said.

“It floored me; I hit the ground. Part of me was under a car, and I put my arms behind my head. There was a terribly crash, and a four-drawer metal cabinet landed on my left. Everything was pitch black. I could hardly breathe. After having been taught by firefighters that there is always oxygen two or three inches above the ground, I knew it was the best place to breathe. I was choking; it was in my eyes and nose. This black mass was engulfing me. Eventually, we would run

• 10:30 a.m. — Berriff uses parked cars as guides to make his way out of the area by crawling on all fours. “After five or 10 minutes of crawling, I could see 5 or 6 feet in front of me. What was strange — what had been four color on a nice summer’s day had turned to black and white.

The result of both is that crews are on a “heightened state of awareness.”

• 4:26 p.m. — Town Manager Bruce St. Denis issues an email to employees stating, “We should not let the actions of some fanatics stop us from continuing with our lives.” The email confirmed that a cookout for employees scheduled for the following day would go on as planned.

• 6 p.m. — St. Armands Key Lutheran Church holds a service, but only a few people attend. Rev. Eric Wogen has been praying with people throughout the day.

Wednesday, Sept. 12

• 10:40 a.m. — Realizing he doesn’t know where Louise, his sound engineer, is, Berriff retraces his steps back. “The visibility had lifted somewhat, but still there are thick choking clouds of dark gray. I got back to the corner of Wall Street where I remembered falling after being hit with parts of the building — sheet metal. It was just an amazing sight. The fire trucks and ambulances were on fire. There were mountains and mountains of debris. This street — within seconds — had turned into hell.” Berriff started digging through the debris and found a sound mixer his group had been using. He dug further and discovered the cameras they had been using — the film inside was still intact. Berriff later reunites with his wife, Mickey, and discovers Louise is OK. • Mid-morning — Many Secret Service agents and most of the press corps are left behind at the Colony. Many agents worry about their colleagues, because the Secret Service has an office at the World

• 10 a.m. — St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church holds an impromptu memorial service. Nearly 100 people attend. All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church holds a special service at the same time. Turnout is strong.

• 11:55 a.m. — The Longboat Island Chapel starts printing flyers for a community-wide memorial to be held Thursday, Sept. 13. Members distribute flyers on the Key. • Noon — St. Armands Key Lutheran holds a special memorial service.

• 4:30 p.m. — Two hundred people attend a memorial service at Temple Beth Israel.

• 8:10 p.m. — The Federal Bureau of Investigation is informed of Peters’ sighting on Tuesday and questions him about the incident.

Thursday, Sept. 13 • 5 p.m. — More than 200 people attend the memorial service arranged by the Longboat Island Chapel. The chapel has 150 candles on hand and runs out.

George Ceshker retired as an American Airlines pilot four years after Sept. 11. In 2009, he and his wife, Sandra, opened a Secur-All Insurance branch on Longboat Key. the plane. I made a brief announcement to passengers about what had happened.

As they saw the carts stacked against the door, their cell phones began to come out.

Later, as we walked out of the airport, reporters with cameras came running at us. They asked why I put the carts against the cockpit door. Was it in the manual?

As pilots, we are not supposed to talk to reporters. But I stopped and told them, “What happened today is not in any air-

line manual anywhere in the world. I knew I was the one to get these people to a safe place. I did the very best I could.”

Later, on the 6 p.m. news, there was my face with Ann Curry.

I finished my airline career four years later and retired. Just like everyone reading this, my life changed that day, and it still makes me angry. Hurts, if you tell the truth. We all have our 9/11 story. This was mine.

ROBERT DINAN John Kintz Former Longboat Key Police Chief John Kintz was prepared for business as usual as he planned for President George W. Bush’s stay on Longboat Key. But Bush’s overnight stay on Sept. 10, 2001, turned out to be anything but routine.

Robert Dinan, co-owner of Kitchens by Kerrie on Longboat Key, served on the New York Police Department from 1996 to 2010. He was at his Long Island, N.Y., home Sept. 11, 2001, when he learned that a plane had hit the first tower.

I got there at 10 a.m. that morning and didn’t leave until 2 p.m. the next day. The bottom of my boots literally melted. You try to do recovery. You dig. You do buckets. The days that followed, it was the same situation: burning, smoking for weeks, maybe even months.

We stayed at the precinct at nights. New York became a really nice place. People were cheering for the police department, the fire department. Hotels were bringing in sheets. Schools and churches opened up.

I have a master’s degree in forensic identification, so for eight months, they used me to identify remains at a makeshift morgue they set up near the site. It was gruesome. I went into intelligence on the Antiterrorism Task Force two years after that.

I still feel like it was yesterday. Police and firemen — they’re people, too. We’re supposed to be the ones running in when everyone else is running out.

That’s what you signed up for. But I know we’re all scarred. As a police officer, you’re supposed to detach yourself from a situation. But here it is, still, in everyone’s head.

It was a very hectic time. I think myself and everyone else, we were so numb from what happened. On the 10th and the weeks leading up to it, it was business as usual. But looking back on Sept.

10, it was the night before everything changed.

A good month in advance, we had a pre-meeting with the Sarasota Police Department, which we did anytime there was a head of state or vice president who was going to be in our area. It wasn’t anything unusual because we had had ex-presidents and vice presidents before. Our job was making sure we provided necessary support to the Secret Service agents in charge of the president’s overall security.

I had been at the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort the night before and didn’t leave until 9 or 10 p.m.

At that time, Fire Chief Julius Halas and I were having our morning coffee, sitting at my house when my friend called to tell me that the World Trade Center had been hit. Like the rest of America, we were glued to the television.

Once it was determined that this had been a large-scale terrorist attack, things happened quickly. We provided extra security at the Colony after the president departed and continued to do so for at least a couple of days.

As soon as it happened, I was on my way with three other cops.

Driving into Manhattan, you always saw the skyline. It was surreal. We were driving when we saw the second plane hit.

We got right to our precinct in mid-town Manhattan, and they started taking everyone by van to the scene. It was complete mayhem, with everybody running.

I didn’t think that the towers would collapse. The fire department set up a command post in Tower 2.

It was such mayhem. At that point, it was just trying to get people out of the building. Alarms were going off; there were announcements telling people to go back to the office. It was very chaotic. Usually, as a police officer or a firefighter, you’re told, “This is what you’re doing.” There was no way you could train for something like this. There was one lieutenant telling us to send five officers to the parking garage at the bottom of the World Trade Center to make sure no one was stealing cars. I jumped in and told him that wasn’t a good idea. There’s no telling what would have happened to those guys if they had gone down there.

After the World Trade Center fell, it was like being on the moon, up to our knees in what looked like lunar ash. We were all white and gray with what was.

Building 7 didn’t come down until later. My partner and I got caught up in the collapse of that building on an underground tube with six other people.

We lost all communication, but the stuff we could hear going off on the radio was horrifying. Moira Smith, a cop from the 13th Precinct — I just remember her screaming, “Please get us out of here.” New York Police Department lost 23 cops that day. I knew most of the police officers.

Delta Airlines Flight 109 departed Madrid at 1:34 p.m. local time, one hour, 34 minutes late due to the late arrival of inbound equipment. The flight was normal, with 92 passengers. Just before the radio handoff to Santa Maria Oceanic Control, Lisbon Control relayed the information that two commercial airliners had crashed into the World Trade Center. When we discovered it was a terrorist attack, we used Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System to contact Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to express our intentions to put the aircraft down at the nearest safe airport as soon as possible.

I was concerned with a possible bomb onboard. The only two airports that were close were Lajes and Santa Maria, both in the Azores and almost 1,000 miles from the closest land in Europe.

I briefed the crew and flight attendants and told them to turn off the “Air Show” and disable air phones in case we had terrorists onboard. I asked the flight attendants to secure the cabin and told them not to inform passengers about the seriousness of the situation. We started a slow turn to the south, and as soon as we were within 200 miles of Lajes, we descended to 14,000 feet, putting us in a better position to survive an onboard explosion and be close enough for a

sea rescue, if needed. First Officer Kim Fieldstad was flying that leg.

I asked him if he wanted to continue flying, and he agreed. I assigned flight officer Mike Kuhnes to stand at the cockpit door with the crash ax and flight attendant Sharon Pierro to stand outside to stop anyone from approaching the door. Our crew was acting as one.

Fieldstad made one of the finest landings he will ever make in his life. The runway was a World War II airfield. We could not make a full turn at the end and not damage the runway. We turned off before the end of the runway on the reinforced taxiway and proceeded to the runway in front of the gate area. We started the emergency evacuations of the passengers using air stairs. I was at the door to assist passengers and be in a position to depart the aircraft to deny

the cockpit crew to potential terrorists.

I assembled the crew for a passenger briefing in the customs area.

I told passengers what had happened to the World Trade Center.

Most had already found out from CNN on the TV in the bar area. I told everyone that we were in this together and that we were now the family of Delta Flight 109.

We did a thorough walk-around to check all locations for bombs and moved the aircraft to the bomb-security area. The Atlanta airport told us that we would be spending the night.

The flight attendants did an excellent job of keeping order. By the time we returned for a second briefing, passengers were sharing cell phones and the medications they needed.

The station manager secured enough rooms between several hotels and private rooms. The bad news: Passengers would have to sleep three to a room. The entire crew and several passengers went to government housing at 2 a.m.

We did not have hot water, but Fieldstad went next door, got batteries for the pilot light and solved that problem.

We contacted Atlanta for permission to return to Madrid. The flight to Madrid was uneventful.

After a two-day delay in Madrid, we flew the rotation home.

The crew was welcomed to the departure gate by passengers with a round of applause. We had truly become the family of Delta Flight 109.

I have never been prouder of any crew I have flown with in my entire career.

We saw lots of high-ranking local Republicans who we knew. But the nicest and most notable in the group was the president himself. He came directly to where we were standing and thanked us for being there. He asked for my name, and I gave it to him, and he said: “It’s very nice to know you, Claire Hunter.”

We were all very proud to be there.

The next day, it was astounding. Ralph had a doctor’s appointment in Sarasota. We came bopping into the doctor’s office, and everyone was gathered around the TV. We wondered what they were looking at. They were looking at the first tower.

When we saw the president on TV, he looked so different. He had been so happy and relaxed when we saw him. He was so troubled by the time we saw him again.

We felt, as everyone did, that our lives would never be the same.

The Longboat Key Club and Resort will hold a “First Responders” inaugural golf tournament to benefit the emergency response teams of Longboat Key and Sarasota and Manatee counties, in remembrance of the events of Sept. 11.

“We all share in the pain and devastation of the events of Sept. 11, 2001,” said Key Club General Manager Michael Welly. “As we remember the victims and survivors of this national tragedy, I feel it is important that we also honor and support the men and women who are the first responders in our own community when disaster strikes.

“To that end, I am proud to announce the first of what will become an annual tournament that supports those individuals and organizations in our community that give so much of themselves,” he said.

The “First Responders” tournament will be held Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Key Club’s Harbourside Golf Course. There will be an 8 a.m. shotgun start with a maximum of 120 players. Entry fee is $100; players may sign up individually or as a foursome. The tournament is open to the public.

Fred and I left our condo on Longboat Key early on the morning of Sept.

11, 2001, for the Tampa airport. We had a flight booked to our home in New Jersey. At the airport, we returned our rental car, checked our luggage and decided to walk around before going to our departure gate. We wondered why so many people were rushing into the TGI Fridays restaurant so early in the day and crowding around the TV. The tragedy had just begun. Word came that the airport would close immediately. We had trouble getting our luggage back and renting another car, but we did and returned to Longboat Key stunned and shocked. A few days later, we returned to the airport and were able to get on one of the first flights to leave Tampa. There were just a few other people on our flight to New Jersey, and we seemed to be eyeing each other in a suspicious manner. I think we all wondered if another tragedy could happen on our flight. And I think that fear still exists today.

The flag tribute, started in 2002 by the town and Longboat Key, Lido Key, St. Armands Key Chamber of Commerce, acts as a memorial for every person who lost their life as a result of the attacks. I remember vividly Sept. 11. I was living in Los Gatos, Calif., and I had been packing boxes for my return journey to Sarasota at the end of the month. Taking a break, I walked the “trail,” which is a mountain (well, in Florida you’d call it a mountain, in California it’s really a 1,000-foot big hill) early in the morning.

As I was walking toward the coffee shop after completing my walk, people were gathered around out front obviously stressed and upset. I stopped one of my friends and inquired, “What’s going on?”

Tearfully she explained to me what had happened. I thought, “She has to be kidding; this can’t be true.” As I stammered a response, I looked in the window and noticed the TV, which was inside in the corner of the room of the coffee shop (as you know, those tech guys never are without the stock report). It was the most horrifying scene that to me seemed surreal. I kept thinking to myself, “Do I know anyone who works in that building?” People were dumbstruck, and everyone kept saying over and over, “I just can’t believe it.” I don’t believe anyone left the window (there was no room in the coffee shop as people gravitated inside so they could see the TV) for a long time.

When I left Los Gato early in the morning two weeks later, driving the “big truck,” I placed a flag on the bumper and on the side window, and as I traveled the highways going east, most every car or truck that was traveling had done the same.

This week’s residential real-estate transactions were recorded Aug. 22 and Aug. 26 at the Sarasota and Manatee County courthouses. Of this week’s five sales, two were for the same price of $1.25 million, and one transaction recorded was for $1.15 million.

Not-so-smooth sailing 1:27 p.m. — Off the Key. Assist Other Agency. Police escorted the Manatee County Sheriff marine unit, which was assisting a sailor who had fallen and hit his face. The injured sailor was examined by EMS and released.

Aug. 27 In the cards 8:04 a.m. — 800 block of Spanish Drive North. Property Found. A man told police that he found a debit card on a bike ride. Police located the owner’s father, who said that he would contact his daughter.

Abandoned bicycle 9:57 a.m. — 3100 block of GMD. Property Found. After receiving an anonymous complaint, police retrieved a bicycle abandoned in the bushes.

4:06 p.m. — 800 block of Broadway. Parking. A restaurant owner reported that several vehicles have been parked in front of his restaurant while the occupants take a boat to a rental house on Jewfish Key. The owner reported that the vehicles are blocking the driveway and creating parking problems for restaurant patrons.

Aug. 28 Loaded problem 4:25 p.m. — 3900 block of GMD. Highway Obstruction. Police observed a white Lexus parked on the side of the road and observed its owner trying to clear a large pile of debris from the roadway. The owner told police that two trash cans fell from his vehicle while he was driving home from a remodeling job. Police helped the man with cleanup and issued a written warning for an unsecured load.

Be wary of the lure of the finesse West led his fourth-best diamond, and the declarer lost no time in going set. Declarer won the king of diamonds, cashed the ace of trump and finessed the Jack. West took his queen and continued with a diamond.

Declarer won and tried to ruff a diamond in the dummy. East overruffed, and the declarer lost a trick in both black suits. He went down one trick in his contract.

The lure of the finesse was declarer’s downfall. If he had realized he could afford to lose a trump trick and one trick in each black suit, he might

have found the winning play. If trump split 3-2, the contract was cold.

After winning the first diamond, declarer should immediately concede a spade to establish the communication between his hand and the dummy. If the defenders continue with a diamond, declarer wins and cashes the ace and king of hearts.

Whether the queen drops, declarer abandons trump and reverts to diamonds. Declarer ruffs a diamond, and if a defender over-ruffs, there still is a trump in the dummy to take care of the declarer’s remaining diamond.
