East County residents share their memories of Sept. 11, 2001.

I was on the board of directors for the Peace River Electric Cooperative at the time, and we had scheduled a board of directors’ strategy session off site away from telephones and technology in an isolated building in the electric cooperative park in Wauchula. The isolation proved ineffective because we got the news anyway. I violated the rules and had my cell phone with me, and my then-fiancee (now my wife) got a hold of me and the news just started pouring in from everywhere. Some events are just too big, and no matter where you are, you just can’t get away from them.

The Worst Day, The Best Day Lakewood Ranch resident Lewis Abate was inside the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

F

ire rains from the sky as Lewis Abate huddles under an overhang at the old Merrill Lynch headquarters across the street from the World Trade Center.

Just minutes ago, he and fellow commodities broker Larry Swenson escaped from the eighth floor of 4 World Trade Center.

Just an hour ago, they were in Abate’s Jeep. It was such a beautiful day that they had joked about turning the car around and heading to the beach.

They know nothing of what has just happened; all they see through the smoke are the burning orange embers floating toward the pavement.

Abate turns and sees a coworker named Danny on the nearby steps. He is clutching his cell phone in both hands and sobbing, his shoulders shaking uncontrollably. His tears are so thick that he cannot see.

Abate grabs him, and finally, Danny gains enough composure to point to 2 World Trade Center.

“My wife is on the 92nd floor,” he screams. “I’m going up there to get her. I have to get her.”

Danny takes one step toward the building before Abate grabs him.

“Danny,” he shouts. “Stop!

I’m going to pray with you right now. Danny! Your wife is coming down those stairs as fast as humanly possible to get to you. And she’s going to

meet you right here on these steps.”

“OK Louie,” Danny says.

“OK. I will stay right here.”

Just then, a woman screams, points to the tower and passes out. Abate looks up. Through the smoke, he sees people jumping from the tower. Some look like they are holding hands. Others look like they are hugging.

All Abate wants is to reach out and catch them.

The roar of the second plane drowns the mayhem below, followed by more screams.

God, no! God, no! Oh please God, No! Abate hears the change in United Airlines Flight 175’s engine as Marwan al-Shehhi hits the throttle. A ball of flames erupts from the impact. The heat from the explosion is enough to steal away whatever breath he had left.

It is the worst day of Abate’s life.

Abate finally regains his breath after the heat from the explosion dissipates. He grabs Swenson, who wants to try to make it to the Staten Island Ferry.

“Follow me, trust me, and you’ll live,” he tells his friend.

Instead of the ferry, the two run down the FDR Drive and onto the Brooklyn Bridge.

another roar muffles the sea of people scrambling for safety.

“We thought it was a third plane hitting,” Abate says.

It isn’t. It is the first tower collapsing.

Smoke and soot engulf the fleeing crowd, and both Abate and Swenson fashion makeshift masks from their shirts.

On the other side of the bridge, Abate tries calling his wife, his parents, anyone. All the shop owners in Brooklyn already had locked their doors. Abate and Swenson then turn down a side street.

“We saw a car down there, and I literally thought we would have to steal a car to get home,” Abate says.

As they approach the car, Swenson sees a man sitting at a desk in one of the buildings.

He tries the door, and it is unlocked.

Covered in an inch of soot and dust, Abate grabs $200 in cash from his pocket.

“This is all I have,” he tells the man. “Can I please just make one phone call?”

“Were you in the towers?” the man asks. “Keep your money. Make all the calls you need.”

Abate finally connects with his mother, who tells him his father was in Brooklyn and gives him an address.

“I couldn’t help but overhear; that’s the street I live on,” the man in the office says. “I will drive you to your father.”

FINALLY, HOME

I was a TV news reporter at the time covering President George W. Bush’s visit to Emma Booker Elementary School in Sarasota. I was standing about 20 feet away from Bush when he got that famous whisper in his ear. The color immediately drained from his face, but he finished reading the book to the children before excusing himself and leaving to head for the airport.

I heard the news from a co-worker who called me on my cell phone as I was driving. My wife’s older sister had a meeting in the World Trade Center that morning at 9 a.m., and my wife was working in Washington, D.C., very near to the Pentagon.

Turns out my sister-in-law’s meeting was canceled, so she wasn’t even in New York, but with all the phone lines backed up we were unable to reach her. My wife’s building was evacuated, and she drove back to Memphis, Tenn., with other employees from her office.

Abate’s wife, Edie, son Nicholas, then 6, and daughter Brittany, then 3, have their noses pressed to the glass as Abate walks up the sidewalk to his Jersey Shore home. It is about 4:30 p.m. — about eight hours after American Airlines Flight 11 hit 1 World Trade Center.

Abate falls into his family’s arms, hugging, kissing each one of them. Behind their embrace, he sees his big-screen television, replaying the collapse of the towers over and over again.

“Is that real?” he asks Edie.

Until now, he didn’t know they had fallen.

Abate stumbles downstairs to the basement shower. He locks the door to the bathroom and collapses in the stall, tears streaming down the drain. He is exhausted, his mind still full of disbelief. Eventually, he pulls himself together and a robe over his shoulders.

He and Edie put their kids to bed at the normal hour. He wants the madness to stop at his front door. But, every time he blinks his eyes, he sees people jumping.

Abate can’t sleep. He lies for a few minutes with his wife.

Then, he moves to his son’s bed, then his daughter’s. He takes time to smell each one’s head.

I was playing tennis right up here in Lakewood Ranch. I retired from the job in 1989, so I wasn’t there — I had already moved down here — but I did lose 35 friends there.

I was actually on vacation — a cruise, an at-sea day. We were just finishing breakfast when the first news reports started coming across the television. There were four big TVs in the breakfast area, and all of a sudden, you heard people gasp, say, “Oh my God” in unison. Everyone moved to the TV area to see what was happening. And there was such disbelief.

The ceremony will begin with remarks from public officials and will be followed by special music by Braden River Elementary School students, the Pledge of Allegiance and national anthem.

The ceremony also will include readings by the East County Observer’s Sept. 11 essay contest winners, a moment of silence and prayer and the dedication of a flagpole and flag raising, and it will conclude with a silent procession of emergency vehicles and a flyover by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Basilone said, noting residents and business owners have offered their ideas and help with organizing the event.

The Lakewood Ranch Kiwanis Club’s Key Club students, for example, will put out 2,752 American flags — each representing one life taken in the attacks — prior to the ceremony to give attendees a visual representation of how many people died in the attacks.

Volunteers from Lakewood Ranch’s homeowners associations will place American flags in front of each neighborhood’s marquee at sunset Sept. 9 to help com-

memorate the event, as well. Flags will be removed at sunset Sept. 11.

“This is really truly going to be a community event without becoming a festival,” said East Manatee Fire Rescue Training and Safety Officer Tim Hyden, who in recent years has organized a Sept. 11 memorial service in Lakewood Ranch and is assisting with this year’s ceremony. “It’s going to bring people together, yet they’re going to leave with what the message was.”

Organizers hope to make the ceremony an annual event, Basilone said.

Post 9/11: era of endless war?

Come Sunday, millions of Americans will relive that day — Sept. 11, 2001. Its billowing images of horror are etched forever in our minds.

We will recall where we were. We will remember the feelings that coursed through our minds and bodies as we watched — stricken, helpless and in shock.

And when we see, again and again, the surreal, horrific images on television of the World Trade Center buildings collapsing, the airliner slamming into the Pentagon and the bomb-like hole of Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pa., the pictures will rekindle a sense of near-unbridled anger over the 2,977 innocent lives lost on that day.

And in spite of the death of Osama bin Laden, 10 years later, we still want justice, we still want revenge.

One of the remarkable aspects of this story is how our little corner of the world — Longboat Key, Sarasota and Venice — were direct participants in that tragic Day of Infamy. Of all the places in the world, our three little towns and cities, nestled on the balmy, peaceful Gulf Coast of Southwest Florida, were among the launch points and starting points of the events of the day.

The Venice airport, we subsequently learned, served as a flight-school for a few of the terrorists. Longboat Key’s Colony Beach & Tennis Resort was the overnight home base for President George W. Bush the night before the attacks. It was also a target, the Longboat Observer later learned from witnesses, of a van full of Middle Easterners posing as TV journalists who wanted to film the president, but who were rebuffed at the Colony’s guard gate. To this day, the speculation is they were terrorists who wanted to assassinate President Bush the same way disguised Al-Queda terrorists two days earlier assassinated Ahmad Shah Massoud, the Afghani government’s top anti-Taliban general.

And, finally, Sarasota — in particular, the second-grade class of Sandra Kay Daniels at Emma Booker Elementary School — was where President Bush’s aide, Andrew Card, interrupted the president’s reading class and whispered in his ear that the United States was under attack.

President Bush recalled for National Geographic TV that in those minutes Daniels’ class and went into a makeshift holding room, where he quickly scribbled a statement to be delivered to a worldwide audience. He told National Geographic that he reminded himself that he needed to appear calm and in control. History undoubtedly will remember that the way Bush responded and led in the days and weeks that followed were truly heroic.

Still no definitive victory

Almost 10 years later, on May 2, 2011, U.S. Navy Seals killed Osama bin Laden, the most-hated man in America, the diabolical bearded leader of the terrorists.

In the hours after his death, many Americans celebrated in the streets of the nation’s capital. Justice at last.

But with so much time and the subsequent events in between 9/11 and bin Laden’s death — the Iraq war … no Iraqi weapons of mass destruction …

THE NEW NORM: ENDLESS WAR? “This the American era of endless war …

“In previous decades, the military and the American public viewed war as an aberration and peace as the norm.

“Today, radical religious ideologies, new technologies and cheap, powerful weapons have catapulted the world into ‘a period of persistent conflict,’ according to the Pentagon’s last major assessment of global security. ‘No one should harbor the illusion that the developed world can win this conflict in the near future,’ the document concludes.

“By this logic, America’s wars are unending and any talk of peace is quixotic or naive …

“One lesson of today’s endless war seems to be that Americans will have to learn to live with the a certain amount of insecurity and fear.”

Saddam Hussein’s capture and death … free, democratic votes in Iraq … the succession of terrorist attacks around the world … Mumbai, London, Madrid, Bali, Israel … attempted but foiled attacks on the United States … Fort Hood, Texas … the Arab spring … and the continuing war against the Taliban in Afghanistan — for many of us, there still is no sense of victory, no vindication, no sense of complete justice.

Sadly, the “war on terrorism” persists.

Indeed, it’s remarkable to think how so many churches and Masses around the world have offered the same “prayer of the faithful” every day for the past 10 years: “We pray for the end of the war on terror and the conversion of the terrorists from

the worship of death and destruction to the worship a God of love and peace.” But it goes on.

As noted in the box, the Washington Post this week assessed this state of affairs as the new norm — endless war.

It’s not like World War II, when we confronted government-sponsored enemies and decided there was one definitive option — them or us. The way to end it all was mass destruction of the enemy empires, even if it meant thousands and thousands of civilian casualties.

This used to be how nations’ leaders viewed war. Indeed, the belief went, when a nation’s political leaders chose to be violent aggressors, they in turn chose to put at risk their nation’s entire population, sacrificing the innocent lives of their citizenry, all because of their selfish desires for power.

And even though President Bush vowed after 9/11 that those nations harboring terrorists would not be spared, our political and military leaders have adopted the view that the war on terrorism is not a war that can be confined to political and geographic borders. To paraphrase retired Marine Col. John Saputo of Longboat Key, it’s a war of killing one terrorist at a time.

Time is running out

Perhaps this is the new norm. But we also know, definitively, we are living in denial. Everyone knows the roots and money behind this worldwide terrorism is centered in one place: Iran. And time is running out. The most crucial question in this post-9/11 era is whether the United States and its allies will let Iran complete its development of nuclear weapons.

In the recent memoirs of Reza Kahlili, author of “A Time to Betray,” a book about his double life as a CIA agent in Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, Kahlili (a pseudonym for his protection) states definitively: “Now, we are running out of time because the Iranians — with the help of North Korea and China — are developing nuclear warheads. They now have over 1,000 ballistic missiles, including missiles that can hit every capital in Europe, and they’re working with North Korea to develop intercontinental ballistic missiles.

“Once they get the bomb, all bets are off. It’s checkmate. They will arm Hamas, Hezbollah, Syria, Venezuela and others. Every U.S. ally in the region and throughout the world will be a possible target. Israel will be destroyed. America will either be hit or live in constant fear of it. And Iran will substantially control the world’s energy resources … ” Come Sunday, we will mourn again the 3,000 lives lost on 9/11 and the 4,000 American soldiers’ lives lost in the war on terror hence. Justice will never be served for them. But we will honor them, especially those who have made and continue to make the ultimate sacrifice.

And we will continue to pray — for the end of the war on terror, the end of “the era of endless war”; and for the courage to do what must be done to preserve and ensure what we cherish most: our life and our liberty.

No, not a Cessna. Something bigger. A commercial plane.

By 9 a.m., we all were huddled into a storage room where the school kept its audio/ visual equipment. There was one TV on.

And for the next 30 minutes, we watched — over and over again — that first plane.

Then the second plane. Over and over again. It looked fake — like something out of a Michael Bay flick. The planes simply disappeared into the building and an orange fireball. The room, crammed with at least 40 people whose profession is communication, was silent.

At precisely 9:30 a.m., Bush emerged to take the podium.

The school had assembled a backdrop of students and teachers — all of whom seemed unaware of what was happening.

“Today, we’ve had a national tragedy,” Bush said, his hands folded on the top of the podium. “Two airplanes have crashed into the World Trade Center in an apparent terrorist attack on our country.”

With my left hand, I held up my tiny digital point-andclick, firing shot after shot as quickly as it would allow. With my right hand, I steadied my notepad on my knee as my pen attempted to capture every word.

Bush was in and out in less than five minutes.

I rushed back to the East

On 9/11, I was on my way to work at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. As I was headed down 17th Street, I felt fortunate enough to park my car and stand on the corner of 17th Street and U.S. 41 and observe President George W. Bush riding toward Emma Booker Elementary School. The police were leading the president’s limo. People seemed so excited — as was I. All of a sudden one of the policemen on a motorcycle waved his hand indicating to someone not to point his camera at the motorcade. I turned my head to look at the man with his camera, and in doing so, the president’s car flew past me. I was so disappointed because I lost an opportunity to wave directly to Bush. Little did I know what was happening.

Ten years have gone by and I, like a million other people, am still heartbroken by this tragic event.

County Observer office with my notes and photos. By the time I had reached Lakewood Ranch, the South Tower had collapsed. The Longboat Observer was going to press that afternoon, and fellow reporter Mischa Viera and I were tasked with working on a story for their deadline. My editor ran to Walmart to buy a television for the office, and Mischa and I banged away on our keyboards to cobble together what we could.

By that afternoon, I must have seen those buildings collapse thousands of times. That day was relentless. All I wanted was for it to be over; I thought the sun would never set.

After Longboat went to press, I called their designer — my friend (and who later would become my wife). Neither of us wanted to go home.

Do you want to go have dinner? I asked.

As the sun finally set, we huddled in the corner of a Cracker Barrel restaurant — the most American place we could find that day. There were no TVs, no websites, no replays. From our two-top, we could see the sun setting outside. I had hoped the darkness would provide shelter.

We didn’t talk much, but it was comforting just to be with each other. We both knew the world — as we knew it yesterday — was gone.

And I was afraid to go outside.

PICKING UP THE PIECES

The nightmare is always the same. People fall from the buildings. Then, they get up — broken and bloody — and stand before Abate.

They ask him: Why? But before he can answer, they leave.

“They won’t let me answer,” Abate says.

NEW LIFE

A native of New Jersey, Abate went straight from high school to the commodities exchange floor at 4 World Trade Center.

“I loved going to work every day,” he says. “It was a thousand guys making money — just a really big men’s club.”

Edie Abate also worked in the city for 15 years. From the train, she walked her husband to the World Trade Center and grabbed breakfast. After the couple had Nicholas and Brittany, Edie Abate became a stay-at-home mom, and Abate continued working at the commodities exchange — loving every minute of it.

But 9/11 changed everything.

Two years after the attacks, the Abates packed up and left their home.

“I never thought I’d leave New York,” Abate says.

“It was just too hard,” Edie Abate adds. “Too many reminders … too much.”

In August 2003, the Abates settled in Lakewood Ranch, where several members of Edie’s family live.

“We came down here, and I had to reinvent my life,” Abate says. “I really didn’t know what I was going to do.

“But when life throws things at you, you can either crawl up and die or pick yourself up and do what you have to do,” he says.

“I don’t like to fail, and (my wife) won’t let me fail.”

Abate first took a job at Sears to generate some income and provide health insurance for his family. Later, he moved to FedEx, where he spent his mornings

packing trucks and his afternoons cultivating his new business, Simply The Best Pool Services.

Finally, in August 2007, he found Grand Incentives, a Sarasota-based travel incentive company. Now, he leads the company’s telemarketing division, and on every anniversary of 9/11, Abate’s boss, Jose Martinez, calls to check on him.

“He calls Sept. 11 my second birthday,” Abate says. “It definitely was hard to up and leave your roots, your entire family. We had no job, no income coming in.

“But, we did it,” he says. “I’m not rich, but I got everything.”

LOVE OF COUNTRY

A new flag is folded and draped over a dining room chair in the Abates’ home in Lakewood Ranch. The flag’s stripes contain the names of the nearly 3,000 people who died in the 9/11 attacks.

Abate pulls out a book, “Here is New York: A Democracy of Photographs.” He turns to a page saved by a pink sticky tab.

“That’s me,” he says, pointing to a man in a crowd of hundreds scurrying over the Brooklyn Bridge. “I was younger, then.”

Abate says he always was patriotic, and his experience on 9/11 only bolstered his love for the United States. His Jeep displays two custom pieces by Myakka artist Drew Walker. The first is a bald eagle and American flag on the hood; the second an image of the Twin Towers with the words, “Never Forget,” emblazoned on the spare tire cover.

“You saw so many flags right after 9/11, but as time went on, that dwindled pretty quickly,” he says. “The saddest thing is that

so many people forget they live in the greatest country in the world.”

PHOENIX

With the fires still burning at Ground Zero, Abate arrives for the first time Sept. 15 at the temporary commodities exchange site.

About 800 to 900 men meet for the first time since 9/11 — that fateful day in 4 World Trade Center that began with what felt like a bowling ball dropping at Abate’s feet.

“Everyone is kissing and hugging,” Abate remembers. “It was pretty cool to see people together (like that). Guys who had been enemies for years were hugging each other.”

Off in the distance, Abate hears a voice calling.

“Louie! Louie!” a man shouts.

The crowd parts, and Abate sees a man running to him. Danny grabs Abate and kisses him.

“Louie, you prayed with me,” Danny says. “You told me to stay there on those steps. You said not to leave.

“So I stayed,” he says. “And right after you left, my wife ran right by me and knocked me over! Thank you, Louie. Thank you!”

The nightmares still come from time to time; the last one a year ago, Abate says. But as tragic as 9/11 was, stories such as Danny’s affirm that the American spirit burned brighter than those buildings that day.

“Not a day goes by that I don’t think about 9/11,” Abate says. “It was the worst day of my life — and the best day of my life. All rolled into one.”

“I’m not afraid to die,” he says.

“I smelled them so I could have them with me. If I was going to die, I just wanted their love with me.”

The next day, the Abates go to their church, Shore Christian Center, where both children attend school. The Rev. Dewey Friedel pulls Abate aside.

“Pray with me,” he tells Abate.

Abate closes his eyes, but the image of falling people returns, and he almost smacks the pastor. Friedel ministers to Abate for almost three hours and finally tells him to take his family to the beach.

The Abates drive to Sandy Hook, N.J. Off in the distance, smoke is still billowing from Ground Zero. Abate keeps his back to it the entire time, instead focusing on his family and the joy the beach brings to his family.

He settles on the sand, the sun’s warmth on his face.

Finally, he falls asleep.

In the months that follow, the Abates attempt to put their lives back together as best as they can. The commodities exchange is moved to Long Island City, Queens. Instead of a room that was two football fields wide, the new building is only large enough to accommodate a fraction of the work. Each commodity only has one hour each day on the floor, and much of the paperwork is done in the streets.

It is good for Abate to return to some semblance of normalcy.

But the relocated office means a longer commute. Suddenly, Abate is aware of every parked truck in front of every building.

The drive also takes him right

“One time, a plane was flying so low that I could see the passengers inside through the windows,” Edie Abate says.

Nicholas, only 6, also displays effects from the attacks.

For months, the only pictures he draws are of airplanes going into the World Trade Center.

It is simply too much. Too many reminders. Too many trucks. Too many planes.

Early September • As the dead days of September begin, longtime Colony Beach & Tennis Resort owner Dr. Murray “Murf” Klauber lectures his daughter, Colony President/ General Manager Katie Moulton, and their controller that the resort needs more business.

The controller, remembering the summer before, when Vice President Al Gore visited while preparing for presidential debates, jokes that Moulton needs a call from her “friends at the White House.” About an hour later, Moulton gets a call from the White House, telling

her that a high-ranking official was planning to visit the area.

Wednesday, Sept. 5 • Republican Party of Sarasota Chairman Tramm Hudson is playing golf at the Longboat Key Club and Resort when he gets a call from his friend, Dolphin Aviation owner Ron Ciaravella, who tells Hudson that he just sold 40,000 of JP4 jet fuel to the Secret Service and that the president would arrive for an overnight stay Monday, Sept. 10.

Tuesday, Sept. 11 • 6 a.m. — Longboat Key Fire Marshal Carroll Mooneyhan is at the front desk of the Colony, while Bush prepares for his morning jog. Mooneyhan overhears a conversation between a Colony receptionist and security guard. The two discuss that a van occupied by men of Middle Eastern descent had pulled up to the Colony, and the men said they had a poolside interview with the president. The self-proclaimed reporters asked for a Secret Service agent by name. Security guards relayed the request to the receptionist, who had not heard of either the agent or a scheduled interview, and she gave the phone to a nearby Secret Service agent who said the same thing. The van’s occupants were told to contact the president’s public relations office in Washington, D.C., and were turned away. The incident remains unverified by the FBI. • 6:30 a.m. — Bush begins a four-mile jog along the Gulf of Mexico.

• 8:23 a.m. — Bush walks down the stairs of the Colony, headed to his limousine. Moulton thanks him for spotlighting the children of Sarasota as he gets in his limo en route to Booker Elementary.

• 8:46 a.m. — American Airlines Flight 11 strikes the North Tower.

• 8:50 a.m. — Marvin Peters, of Longboat Key, is standing on the Sarasota bayfront to watch Bush’s motorcade go by.

He says he saw a van with two “Middle Eastern men screaming out of the windows, ‘Down with Bush’ and raising their fists in the air.”

According to Bill Sammon’s “Fighting Back,” before Bush heads into the school, he speaks to National Security Adviser Condoleeza Rice, who tells him that a plane has hit the World Trade Center. “That’s one terrible pilot,” he said to White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card before speculating about whether the pilot could have suffered a heart attack.

• 9:02 a.m. — United Airlines Flight 175 strikes the South Tower.

• 9:05 a.m. — As Bush listens to second-graders read a story, Card whispers in his ear that a second plane has hit the World Trade Center.

• 9:15 a.m. — Bush leaves the classroom and goes to a holding room at the school, where he is briefed by staff.

• 9:30 a.m. — Bush addresses

• 9:43 a.m. — American Airlines Flight 77 crashes into the Pentagon.

• Mid-morning — Many Secret Service agents and most of the press corps are left behind at the Colony. Many agents worry about their colleagues, because the Secret Service has an office at the World Trade Center. Reporters continue to file stories while working on making arrangements to get back to Washington, D.C.

MEMORIES/PAGE 7 On 9/11, I was six blocks away from 1 World Trade Center, the North Tower. People running away, shouting and commotion beyond comprehension. Yet at the same time, people on the street like myself kept walking to our destination — but in slow motion. No one knew for sure what was happening, but I believe we all knew something was really wrong.

We all went down to the ground as the cloud of smoke, ash — the remnants of the tower — rolled down the streets, a cloud beyond imagination. I became covered in soot, singed where my suit didn’t cover my body.

What immediately started to occur and lasted for months — flags were flying everywhere, and where possible were at half-mast. Flags were on cars, in front yards, in office building windows, and what surprised me most in the fences of overpasses in New Jersey on Route 287, they just appeared. I have no clue who put these flags there and took the time to weave them into the fencing — I was thankful to drive pass them each day until the day I moved to Florida nine years ago.

My daughter and I went to visit family and friends this summer and drove on Route 287, and to my surprise the flags are still there in the fences. I couldn’t help but smile — we will never forget!

I was living in New Jersey — 50 minutes away from New York City. Driving on Route 46, in Fairfield, on my way to Sears to buy a new vacuum. Tuesdays, I went to my school job late in the morning, but I wanted to get there when the store opened at 9 a.m. I was sitting at a traffic light when the news alert came on that a plane flew into one of the towers. The news kept repeating over and over, and by the time I had gotten to the mall, I kind of got confused hearing about the next tower that had been hit — North, South, what?

Driving to school now, and with the news of the South Tower collapsing and then Flight 93 going down in Pennsylvania, I was shaking. Were we safe at the school? I truly wanted to take my girls out of school and just go home. But was home safe?

My deepest thoughts go out today and everyday to all of us who have been deeply scarred by 9/11.

Oh yeah, about that vacuum. One year later, to the day, I was vacuuming in the morning and my vacuum began to spark and then smoke. I turned if off immediately, went to find the receipt and the warranty and felt weird and freaked this has happened.

Jaden Jungers Fourth grade, Willis Elementary School I have heard of a lot of American heroes like Superman and Batman, but my American hero is different.

My American hero is Tony, my grandpa. He was in the war and fought for our country.

Tony risked his life for our country and for freedom for all. Tony served in the Vietnam War. He lost his hearing from the loud bombs, and he fought in many battles.

Tony believes that Americans should fight for freedom together. He spent eight years fighting for us. He received

the Bronze Star for his actions.

Another thing is Tony gave a lot of help serving his country by serving eight years in the Army. When he retired, he was a full captain with the 101st Airborne Division for the U.S. Army.

Last but not least, Tony was brave and willing, because he did not only serve our country, but he also almost lost his life.

Those are some of the reasons that I love Tony. But the No. 1 reason I love Tony the most is because he is the best grandpa in the whole world!

ESSAY CONTEST WINNERS In commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the attacks of 9/11, the East County Observer partnered with Lakewood Ranch Community Activities Corp. and Florida Bank to host an essay contest open to students throughout the area.

We asked students from third grade through high school to share their thoughts on American heroes (elementary), freedom (middle school) and 9/11 as it has changed America (high school).

Our young minds astounded us with their astute, honest and mature ideas. We received hundreds of entries from several schools —

covered in ash, and they were walking in droves across bridges to get home. No one knew what might happen next.

That is the day — forever etched in my memory — when everything changed in my young life, and I no longer felt completely safe. I lost a bit of the innocence of my childhood on 9/11 — the day I first became aware that I lived in a free country. I also learned on 9/11 that not all countries are free like America and that freedom can be taken away in the blink of an eye. I learned at the tender age of 4 that freedom is a right that my country must constantly strive to preserve, even if it means war.

So I have grown up these past 10 years with the knowledge of bin Laden and what his orga-

nization was capable of, and because of him, America has been at war almost my entire life. I really cannot remember a time when we were not fighting the war against terrorists who would like to deprive America of its freedoms.

The dictionary defines freedom as the state of being at liberty; exempt from external control or interference. That is what another great freedom fighter, Abraham Lincoln, had in mind, when he spoke the following: “Freedom is not the right to do what we want, but what we ought. Let us have faith that right makes might and in that faith let us; to the end, dare to do our duty as we understand it.”

According to Lincoln, our duty is to do the right thing in

the name of freedom. That, over the decades, has meant fighting for freedom in a variety of ways: freedom from England, freedom from slavery, freedom for all to vote and to seek education and employment, freedom to choose where and how to live, freedom to worship as we please, freedom to bear arms, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom to travel and the right to be free from interference in America’s freedom from others such as bin Laden.

So this is what freedom means to me. Even though I was 4 years old when I first learned about freedom, I will always associate freedom with 9/11 — the day I learned that freedom is not free but rather a precious commodity worth fighting for.

Third grade, McNeal Elementary School My picture of an American hero is a brave man or woman who risks their life to save America. Like George Washington, when he was done with the war, he found eight bullets in his clothes.

My essay is about American heroes and their qualities.

American heroes are very responsible — like they are very concentrated on their duty and they don’t want to do anything until they are done. They are also very understanding. If you asked them what they did to become an American hero, they would tell you clearly. They are

also brave and persistent.

My Great-Grampy saved two Jewish kids in World War II. He knew all the police in the town because it was a small town.

The police told him when the Nazis were coming, and he hid them right away. He hid them in a grocery store, in a flour and sugar pantry.

If you took out the bags of flour and sugar, there was a secret door and he hid them in there. My GreatGrampy was Dutch, but he was like an American hero.

That is my essay on what I picture when I think of an American hero.

No matter the color of your hair, no matter the color of your skin and no matter the color of your eyes, there is a giant living inside every American. We have the pride of our country, the pride of being an American, and that makes us heroes.

Natalie Novak Junior, Lakewood Ranch High School Is it possible that it has been a decade since the greatest tragedy of my lifetime? An event simply referred to and universally understood by the mention of two numbers: Nine, 11.

At age 6, I enjoyed playing with my brother, Nick, and sister, Theresa, at my dad’s office, located on the sixth floor of One Sarasota Tower. As company president, he often worked a half-day on Saturdays to catch up on his paperwork left over from a busy week that contained more work than there was time to finish it. We would play hide and seek. Out of the windows of this all-glass building, we could see the boats parked at Marina Jack and the beautiful blue waters of Sarasota Bay. We would sneak a cold soda from the refrigerator, and if we were lucky, find some cookies to enjoy. These were good times.

On Tuesday morning of Sept. 11, 2011, my dad was holding a sign out front of the office that we had painted together. It simply read: “Got my refund check President Bush, Thank You!” President George W. Bush was in Sarasota visiting a local school that morning, and his motorcade had passed right past the office.

Air Force One was parked at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport. I was in my first-grade classroom and my teacher was crying.

Dad had a TV at the office and always had it set to Headline News. Shortly after coming back upstairs to his office, he and his co-workers were in shock with the sight of the burning twin towers in New York. Nearly 3,000 people had been killed at the hands of 19 terrorists — and it happened on American soil. All our lives changed in that very moment. I no longer wanted to come and play at my Dad’s tall glass tower office and was worried about him working there as well.

In the aftermath of the 9/11 tragedy, Americans rallied together, united in the common cause of justice. We had been attacked at home. The sanctity of our borders breached.

This had never happened before and would not be allowed to happen again.

Petty differences were quickly set aside. People worked together to clean up the destruction, rebuild structures, help those in need and strike down our enemies. It was a time of sadness, which quickly gave way to the realization that we were still Americans,

the greatest democracy of the world. We would not be broken by cowards with no regard for the value of human life.

Ten years later, the rebuilding and fighting continues. We have been involved in a complicated and dangerous war for nearly 10 years. Thousands of brave men and women have given their lives to protect our very freedom as Americans.

Osama bin Laden was found and killed for his murderous crimes. Most importantly, in the past decade, America has not suffered another terrorist attack on U.S. soil.

The goal of maintaining homeland security has been achieved and maintained.

The U.S. economy has fallen into a difficult recession partly due to the crushing financial burden created by the U.S. fighting terrorism and safeguarding democracy worldwide. As Americans, we understand that freedom is not free. Regardless of the current soft economy and high unemployment rate, we continue to move forward. Why? Because we are Americans!

Our worst day is 10 times better than the majority of the world’s population. We Americans will once again set aside our petty differences and overcome the challenges of the moment, strengthened by our faith and unity forged in the fires of 9/11.

+ CDD 1 launches contractor search Lakewood Ranch Community Development District 1 supervisors will seek an interim contractor for landscaping services as the district deals with a lawsuit surrounding its request for proposal process.

Following the advice of their attorney, supervisors on Lakewood Ranch Community Development District 1 voted unanimously on Aug. 30 to reject existing bids for landscaping services and to restart a search for a new landscape contractor.

The district’s current provider, Garden Leaders, has filed a lawsuit alleging Lakewood Ranch CDDs 1, 4 and 5 and the Inter-District Authority Board violated the state’s open meetings laws while selecting a new landscape contractor.

District 1 Attorney Jeff Russell said, after analyzing the lawsuit, he does not believe the district violated Sunshine

requirements when staff members independently evaluated requests for proposals from vendors to form a recommendation for supervisors.

“I don’t think there was a Sunshine violation, but it is a reasonably close call on the issue,” Russell said, adding he believes it would be in the district’s best interest to reject all bids and start over.

Doing so, he said, would reduce potential legal expenses and expedite and simplify the process moving forward.

Lakewood Ranch Town Hall Director of Operations Ryan Heise said he will secure an interim contractor for services, and plans to present the recommendation to the board at its September meeting.

Heritage Harbour approves budget, installs reserves The Heritage Harbour South’s 2012 Fiscal Year budget, as adopted, includes provisions for emergency reserves and maintenance of more of the district’s assets.

HERITAGE HARBOUR — After nearly 30 hours of public meetings and workshops, Heritage Harbour South Community Development District supervisors on Sept. 1 approved their 2012 Fiscal Year budget, which establishes the district’s first installment of emergency reserves as well as as funding for road and stormwater management repairs and maintenance.

“They went through a long and difficult process, but I think at the end of the day, (supervisors) got what they wanted,” District Manager Jim Ward said. “They had a public participation process that brought people in, and they listened to the community.”

The new budget is about $540,000 compared to the initial, proposed budget of more than $1 million.

“You have opened the process up,” resident Tom Bakalar told supervisors. “You’ve listened. You’ve responded. You’ve taken more than your share of criticism. I think it’s time to move forward (with the budget).”

Many residents, however, remained critical of the budget and the process by which it has been developed. Homeowners of smaller units, in particular, raised concerns that their assessments were increasing more than those of homeowners of larger lots, because the district is using a new methodology for assessing homeowners.

An attorney for Lighthouse Cove, who spoke on behalf of the community’s HOA board at the meeting, said the board believed the new assessment methodology is unfair.

Chris Brandt, general manager of the Stoneybrook Golf Club, also has stated the golf club’s new assessment — an increase of more than $35,000 annually — is not fair.

Brandt is slated to meet with a representative of the district’s asset management company to discuss what, if any, parts of the district’s water management system are within the golf club’s boundaries. Assessments will be reduced, according to findings, with no resulting assessment increase to homeowners, District Manager Jim Ward said.

Additionally, residents said having $100,000 in reserves for a hurricane or other natural disaster, as supervisors had planned, was too high. They also said the district is paying too much for management services.

As a result, supervisors agreed to reduce reserves to $50,000 and to keep a portion of road and streetlight utility services with the HOAs — a savings of about $25,500 — after Supervisor Joseph Jaudon pushed for more cuts to further reduce assessments for homeowners.

Jaudon originally asked to eliminate completely the $100,000 in reserves, about $66,000 in roads and streetlights and another $15,000 in administrative and other costs, but the motion failed and was modified.

“The good news is the ill-planned 207% increase in the original budget was eliminated,” resident Tom Tullio said after the meeting. “Quite a few vocal owners were helped by one very determined board supervisor. It’s just too bad it took so many expensive meetings to get us back to reality.”

Supervisors postponed to Sept. 27 other agenda items, including consideration of an annual contract with Morris-Riley Development to provide asset management services.

“We are in the entertainment business,” Rusch said.

Although many chorus members likely will have performed in choral groups before, Rusch said no prior singing experience is necessary. There are no auditions for the group, but prospective members will sing to Rusch so he can determine which part of the harmony best suits their vocal range.

Windsor residents prepare sweet surprise The Windsor of Lakewood Ranch has launched a campaign to send care packages to troops in Iraq. The soldier receiving packages is resident and veteran Gerry Haller’s grandson.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Donning her World War II military bars, 1st Lt. Gerry Haller couldn’t suppress a grin as she and friends at The Windsor of Lakewood Ranch packed homemade chocolate chip, white chocolate macadamia nut and other cookies into boxes for soldiers overseas.

As a veteran herself, Haller knows how special the packages will be to the troops who receive them. She also knows they’ll be extra special for the man receiving these particular boxes — her grandson, Capt. Scott Hall of the 1st Calvary Division, out of Ft. Hood, Texas.

Hall has been stationed in Afghanistan since April. He is a 2004 Lakewood Ranch High School graduate and was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army in 2008.

“We have so many veterans here of World War II,” said Sonja Carpenter, Windsor life enrichment coordinator. “Gerry has served the country, and she’s (Scott’s) grandmother. That’s our motivation.”

Those soldiers out there live off very little and something like that, home-baked goods from home, raises morale for days.”

“We do very little subcontracting,” Butler said. “We are a granite company. We are an appliance company.”

Teams kick off season It’s official.

Football season is finally upon us.

It’s the time of year when I load up my car with notebooks, cameras, rosters and rain gear — not to mention snacks, bottles of water and anything else I can cram into my bag — and hit the road for my weekly Friday night adventure, which can range from a four-hour trip down the JEN street to a 10BLANCO hour adventure across the state to the middle of nowhere.

Every fall, I gather my three football schedules ahead of time and plan out my season. I grab my highlighter and carefully map where I’ll be heading each week.

By this point, I’ve come to know which games matter the most. I also know practically every restaurant from here to Naples, and most importantly, I know which cities to avoid or at least have additional entertainment on hand at the very least — Lake Placid anyone?

But all of those insights practically went out the window this season when the new districts were announced earlier this year. Now, I’m finding myself gearing up for a whole new set of adventures.

This season, as in years past, my travels began right here in the East County when rivals Braden River and Lakewood Ranch once again opened their seasons against one another last Friday night (see story).

SARASOTA — Growing up, Dr. Roger Romano had aspirations of becoming a dentist — following in the footsteps of his family dentist and role model.

But those plans got derailed when Romano suffered a serious back injury while lifting weights during his final year of college.

Romano’s doctors said he needed to have surgery; but

rather than going under the knife, the former bodybuilder sought out the help of a chiropractor, who not only helped alleviate Romano’s pain but also ultimately saved him from surgery.

Shortly after his recovery, Romano decided to become a chiropractor, and in 1986 he earned his doctorate from Life University in Atlanta, Ga.

Now 24 years after moving to Sarasota and opening Romano Family Chiropractic, Romano is hoping to help other athletes avoid serious injuries of their own. But this time, he’ll be doing it on one of athletics’ biggest stages — the 2012 Olympics.

Romano is one of 40-50 chiropractors from across the country who will be serving as chiropractors for the U.S. Olympic Team.

“It’s definitely a lifelong dream,” Romano said. “I’ll actually be there before, during and after taking care of the athletes right there while they’re competing.”

Romano, who is a part of the Wellness Advisory Council, was nominated for the opportunity about one-and-one-half years ago. Once he was selected, Romano had to undergo a fourpart certification process, which included certification in athletic

But that all changed this summer when Lakewood Ranch traveled to Appalachian State for a team camp. There, the former Mustangs linebacker filled in at running back. Before long, the senior had proven he could handle the transition.

And on Sept. 2, Hathaway showed just how explosive he could be. In front of a packed Pirate Stadium, Hathaway racked up 133 yards on 25 carries and scored two touchdowns, helping lead the visiting Mustangs to a 28-18 victory over rival Braden River in the season opener for both teams.

“Hathaway’s a tough kid,” Lakewood coach Shawn Trent

said. “That’s why we moved him there. He started at outside linebacker all last year, and we knew we needed more than one running back. Andre (Christiano) did a fantastic job when he was in there, too, but McKenzie just has a little bit more weight to him, so he brings a little bit more with him and behind those (strong)

Romano, who already has been to the Olympic training center in Colorado Springs to meet with some of the athletes, will be one of the chiropractors for the U.S. wrestling, judo and weightlifting teams.

“Most Olympic teams have a chiropractor,” Romano said.

“We’re taking care of them along the way. We’re working with them to prevent injury rather than waiting for them to come to us.

“We’ll be able to take care of the athlete right before he competes and then right after,” Romano said. “It’ll be real time. We’ll be right there and be right in the middle — not just as a spectator but actually participating with the athletes.

It hasn’t fully hit me yet.”

Aside from taking care of the athletes before and after they compete, Romano also is hoping to provide them with information on preventive nutrition and the proper mechanics of the spine.

“We want them to learn to take better care of their bodies, so they’ll perform better with less injuries,” Romano said.

Romano will leave for London sometime next July and will split the Olympic schedule with his partner, Dr. Jennifer Norbits, of Amazing Life Chiropractic, who is the only other local chiropractor to have been selected to go to London.

“I’m looking forward to working with the athletes,” Norbits said. “A lot of their success principles are something we (could) pick up on. It’s amazing to see the principles they live by and their mindset.

They have the mindset to (always) push through and they give so much to their own profession. It’s just amazing.”

In addition to helping the athletes, Romano and Norbits, who both have never been to the Olympics or to London, are looking forward to exploring the city’s culture.

“I can’t wait to go,” Norbits said. “I’m just looking forward to getting outside the U.S. and seeing other opportunities that are out there.”

Heading into its rivalry game at Braden River, the Mustangs, who won last year’s game 21-7 and ended the Pirates streak of three straight victories over the Mustangs, had spent the past year hearing how they got lucky last year.

Looking to prove that last year wasn’t a fluke, Lakewood relied on its strength — a massive offensive line — and a simple game plan to try and wear down its East County rivals.

The recipe proved effective.

Behind their powerful offensive line, which eventually wore down the Pirates defense, the Mustangs amassed 224 yards on 44 carries.

“I think the biggest thing was our kids listening to their kids talk that it was a fluke all year,” Trent said. “So, to be able to come back and do it twice in a row and prove it wasn’t a fluke, I think, makes a big difference.”

Christiano added 61 yards, senior running back Sam Harper and senior quarterback Jeren Kowalewski both added 15 yards and senior tight end Greg Funk had one carry for five yards.

“They’re big (guys) and they worked hard in the weight room,” Trent said. “They’re big strong kids and in games like this that’s what it comes down to late in the third and fourth quarter when you have to get that first down. It worked out well tonight.

“I don’t know too many coaches, if you had those guys up on the offensive line, that you wouldn’t be running the ball,” Trent said. “I’m really proud of the offensive line and McKenzie, Andre and even

Lakewood marched 80 yards down the field on its opening possession, and took an early 7-0 lead on Hathaway’s 3-yard run.

Braden River responded when quarterback Steven Ross connected with Troy Gatling in the back of the end zone for a 26-yard score, cutting Lakewood’s lead to 7-6.

Lakewood extended its lead when Hathaway punched the ball in from three yards out.

After recovering an onside kick on its ensuing possession, Braden River cut Lakewood’s lead to 14-12

when offensive lineman Trevon Young recovered running back Demond Bradley’s fumble and rumbled his way 17 yards for the score.

Kowalewski scored from three yards out to give Lakewood a 2112 lead.

Braden River opened the third quarter with a scoring drive of its own when Ross threw the ball back to wide receiver Ryan Fischer, who then connected with Justin Ross in the corner of the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown.

Kowalewski scored the Mustangs’ final touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.

The Pirates tried to respond late in the game, but a pair of fourthquarter interceptions by Lakewood’s Luke Sears and Brandon King derailed Braden River’s attempt at a comeback.

“Hats of to them; they played a great game,” Braden River coach Don Purvis said. “They were physical. They did a good job of pushing us around a little bit, and they didn’t make very many mistakes that hurt them, and we did.

“That might be because this is a rivalry and all of the emotions that go along with it,” Purvis said.

“I have a lot of confidence in our young men (though) that they’re going to settle down, play hard and they’ll overcome it.”

Braden River will look to rebound from last Friday’s loss as the Pirates travel to North Port to take on the Bobcats in non-district action Sept. 9.

Meanwhile, the Mustangs will return home to host Southeast in another non-district contest.

Last season, Lakewood fell to the Seminoles 28-0. Kickoff for both games is set for 7:30 p.m.

Sure I’ll only be venturing a mere four miles from my house, but it’ll be my first time seeing the Thunder play under the lights on their home field. And if that weren’t enough of an incentive, it’ll also be the first of seven dis-

trict games for ODA. From there, I’ll be planning road trips to Boca Ciega, Manatee, Largo and possibly Port Charlotte and Seminole Osceol, not to mention the countless trips across the East County.

And after that it’s anyone’s guess as to where I’ll end up.

All I know is another football season is upon us, and I, for one, couldn’t be more ready.

Premier scores with first Nike Cup Thousands of youth soccer players put their skills to the test during the Nike Cup Labor Day Showcase Sept. 3-5 at the Premier Sports Campus at Lakewood Ranch.
