Intern Laura Beth Goldsmith sat down with the preschool students to show off her Girl Scout vests and patches and even passed them around for the kids to try on for size. The group sang camping songs together and then built an “edible” campfire using pretzels, raisins and other treats.

Patrick’s Restaurant and Tavern owner Jim Sullivan believes his former landlord is mimicking his restaurant.

Patty’s on Main General Manager Patty Ridings said the restaurant is named after her and is not intended to mimic Patrick’s Restaurant.

Is there a restaurant battle brewing between Patrick’s Restaurant and Tavern and Patty’s on Main? There are now two similar American restaurants a stone’s throw away from each other, with similar names and even menus that list identical items.

HONORING OUR VETERANS by Robin Roy | County Editor

Assembly area to enhance cemetery The Patterson Foundation has pledged millions of dollars to construct a large, shaded stage and seating area for special events, gardens and war memorials to honor veterans year-round. Thanks to a $5.5-million pledge from The Patterson Foundation, the Sarasota National Cemetery will have an enhanced ceremonial area capable of hosting more than 2,600 people. The nearly 2-acre site will serve as a formal place for ceremonies and celebrations, such as Memorial Day and Veterans Day, held at the veterans cemetery on State Road 72, east of I-75. The improvements also will provide enjoyment for visitors throughout the year.

“(The goal is to) inspire patriotism and honor the nation’s veterans,” said Mary Elder, the cemetery’s acting director. The enhanced area will consist of a large, covered seating area for nearly 3,000 people, a stage with lighting and amplification systems, artwork, gardens and veteran memorials.
