The artwork was done by local artists, many of whom are members of the Uprise Art Collective. Orgera read the poems from her book that went along with the pieces of art to a crowd of more than 50 people.

Orgera graduated from New College in ’99 and is now the assistant director of the Writing Resource Center at her alma mater.

Atwell outlines the goals for her term To the casual observer, Sarasota’s new mayor, Suzanne Atwell, may not appear to be the most forceful member of the City Commission.

During her first two years in office, she never engaged in public debates with her fellow commissioners, as the other four commissioners did.

And aside from occasionally reading prepared speeches after votes on important or controversial topics, many of her comments were short — either saying it was time to move forward on an issue, agreeing with something a commissioner had said before her turn to speak or heaping praise on a group, individual or event that had done good in the community.

But a reluctance to publicly bicker with colleagues or constituents should not lull one into believing she does not have a passion for her beliefs.

But instead of letting it die, she worked behind the scenes.

“I wasn’t going to ask a third time and instead waited for budget time,” she said.

Atwell said as mayor she plans a big push on this issue.

One of her other pet projects on which she will concentrate is bringing a sports festival to Payne Park.

“I walk in Payne Park, and I’m the only one there,” she said.

“Payne Park needs a shot of adrenaline.”

The sports festival, in which people of all ages would compete in a wide variety of competitive sports, is one way to inject energy into the underutilized city park, she hopes.

Benches to be removed from park City will Citizens say taking away six benches from Selby Five Points Park did nothing to stop transients from gathering and monopolizing the remaining three benches, so the commission will take away all the park’s benches.

The first citizens to officially ask the new City Commission to help with what they saw as a serious problem saw a quick resolution.

Three people asked commissioners Monday to remove the three remaining benches in Selby Five Points Park. “(The homeless) have set up a home office there,” said downtown resident Jim Lampl. “While it’s legal to use the benches, they’re there for six-to-eight-hour shifts.”

About a month-and-a-half ago, the city removed six benches from the park, because residents had complained that the benches attracted transients and panhandlers and allowed them to mass together, which intimidates some citizens and tourists.

“We were hoping for a more favorable outcome, but it hasn’t happened,” Lampl said. “It’s not thinning out the masses of tran-

sients.”

Peter Fanning, president of the Downtown Sarasota Condo Association, consistently had been opposed to removing benches from the park, because residents also used them.

However, after seeing little change in the number of transients at the park, he changed his stance and also asked commissioners to take away the remaining benches.

“I said, ‘OK, I’ll try it your way,’” Fanning said he told supporters of bench removal.

Pat Westerhouse, a member of the Downtown Improvement District and manager at Casto

Properties, which owns the Whole Foods complex from Lemon Avenue to Central Avenue, agreed that something needed to be done.

“We’ve been a magnet for transient traffic,” she said.

“Leasing has been very tough for us. Removing the remaining benches would be extremely helpful.”

Less than two hours after hearing those requests, Commissioner Paul Caragiulo asked to open a discussion about the issue.

His fellow commissioners came to the quick conclusion that all Five Points Park bench-

es should be removed.

“The Plaza at Five Points has the highest property-tax value in the county,” said Vice Mayor Terry Turner. “We need to be mindful in harming the property value.”

Said Commissioner Shannon Snyder: “There’s a difference between helping people and enabling people.”

And Mayor Suzanne Atwell said the time to act is now.

“We need to do something,” she said. “We have to pay attention to that neighborhood.”

The city’s park smoking ban will begin to be enforced in about a month. The city will remove the benches and study for three months after that what effect the removal has on the transient activity in the park.

A decision will be made after that time about keeping the benches out of the park or returning them.

State of the City: Challenges lie ahead The annual mayor’s address focused on the serious challenges faced the previous year and those that still face city government and Sarasota’s citizens.

As is tradition during the appointment of a new mayor, the outgoing mayor delivers his State of the City address.

But, unlike previous years, the message was a serious one.

“There was much conversation with our Charter Review Committee, with a concern that (the address) concentrated too much on fluff and not enough on substance,” said former Mayor Kelly Kirschner.

This year’s State of the City May 13 highlighted achievements from the previous 12 months and challenges to come in the next year.

Kirschner emphasized what the city administration believes

is one of the biggest obstacles ahead — rising pension costs.

The city trotted out figures that project the next fiscal year will be the first in Sarasota’s history that pension obligations will cost more than tax revenue will generate.

“The current system is clearly unsustainable,” Kirschner said.

Unions have previously dismissed those claims as propaganda.

Kirschner also discussed the city’s ever-tightening budget.

“We can’t burden alreadystrapped homeowners with new taxes,” he said. “The new commission will be burdened with this.”

The constant themes of the address were the challenges facing the new City Commission, which included pensions, the budget and redeveloping Newtown.

“Revitalization goes beyond new (building) facades,” said Kirschner, who said the new commission will have to “invest in human capital” to turn around the North Sarasota community.

Kirschner touted that for the first time, the commission added “quality of life” as one of its top priorities.

He cited as contributing to quality of life in Sarasota such things as the permanent police

Sarasota County is withdrawing most of the $2.9 million it has traditionally paid to operate city parks.

Within five years, the city will be responsible for millions of dollars in park operations costs that it had not previously funded.

Sarasota County currently funds parks within the city limits, but due to its own budget constraints, it plans to withdraw most of the money it has traditionally devoted to the city’s park operations.

Annually, the county contributes $2.9 million to run city parks.

City commissioners approved May 16 a new 10-year parks agreement between the two government bodies.

The previous agreement expired last year but had been extended six times while the county and city negotiated a new deal.

Terms called for the city to take over all funding for 16 smaller “neighborhood” parks.

The county will phase out funding of those parks with $500,000 contributed in the first year, $350,000 in the second year and $200,000 in the third year.

In years four through 10, the city will fully fund the neighborhood parks and Bayfront Park, which the county had spent $550,000 each year to operate.

The county will continue to fund “regional” parks, which are defined as those that attract people from the city and county.

City commissioners and city management had fought to include the Robert L. Taylor Community Center as one of those regional parks, but the county refused.

The North Sarasota park is currently being renovated, and its operating costs are expected to balloon from $400,000 to more than $1 million.

The new agreement calls for Robert L. Taylor funding to be phased out over five years, with the county contributing $320,000 per year during that timeframe.

Mayor Suzanne Atwell said she hoped that the city will be able to collect data during the next five years that shows the park has regional users, and that could be used to resurrect county funding.

City commissioners did notice a part of the contract that they are insisting is changed — a termination provision that would technically allow the county to stop those phased payments before the five years are up.

“It is clear the current County Commission intends to make those payments,” said Vice Mayor Terry Turner, “but the contract is 10 years, and future commissioners (may not).”

The city plans to add a clause that requires the five-year funding, before the County Commission approves the contract May 24.

+ Vice mayor seeks to delay paid parking A staunch opponent to installing downtown parking meters in this economy, Vice Mayor Terry Turner implored his fellow commissioners May 16 to join him in asking that the paid-parking process be stopped.

Commissioner Paul Caragiulo was the only one who agreed.

“It’s not too late to stop,” said Turner.

But City Manager Bob Bartolotta said it was too late. The meters have been installed and are set to go online May 23.

“We have spent close to five years and $500,000 to $600,000 on this,” Bartolotta said. “We have an entire media and marketing campaign. If you put a stop to this, there are negative consequences.”

The rest of the commission did not want to stop the meter setup process.

Cancer survivor treated to day of beauty After reviewing the submissions for its Cancer Survivor Essay Contest, the Ritz-Carlton Members Club, Sarasota, announced Cindy Riggs as its winner.

It’s 8:30 a.m. on Friday, and Cindy Riggs has just arrived at the Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota Day Spa and Salon, where she’ll spend the day being pampered.

The Ritz-Carlton Members Club, Sarasota, recently announced Riggs, 48, as the winner of its first Cancer Survivor Essay Contest. She’s already changed into a light-pink-and-white robe and is sitting in the salon, eagerly awaiting her makeover — a massage, facial, manicure, pedicure, hairstyle and makeup.

Last July, Riggs felt a lump in her breast. When she checked again one month later, the lump was still there, so she saw her doctor, who ordered a mammogram and ultrasound. When the doctor phoned that afternoon, he told her to see a surgeon immediately.

“After the biopsy, the surgeon’s office called and confirmed that it was breast cancer,” Riggs said.

“I don’t remember what my first thought was. My feeling was, ‘OK. What do we need to do?’ It was shocking because I’ve always been very healthy.”

Telling her children — Tiffany, now 16, and Dylan, now 18 — wasn’t easy, because they had lost their father, Glenn, one year earlier to a heart attack.

“To have to give them more LBK that - 2010 K news was -going to rock their world again … it was difficult,” Riggs said. “I told them I

a house, and that’s where my mom (Marilyn Seymour) and my sister (Malina Williams) were just amazing help. You have to have help, and you have to accept help.”

Riggs celebrated the news that she was cancer-free in January by giving her testimony at church.

“When I was diagnosed, one of the first scriptures I was given by God was a psalm that says: ‘I will live and not die and proclaim the works of the Lord,’” she says. “I knew I would survive this, and when I did and I was cancerfree, I had to fulfill that promise.

When people see you go through things and come out OK on the other end, it gives them hope.”

When it came to the deadline of the essay contest, which Riggs heard about through a co-worker, she still wasn’t sure she wanted to enter. But after a phone call from her sister, who encouraged her to write her story, she prayed about it, sat down and started writing. Within 15 minutes, she had 800 words.

“I was pleasantly surprised when I got the call (about winning),” Riggs said.

The day of beauty last week stated with a Swedish massage and facial. Her agenda was so busy that she ordered in lunch while having her hair done. After her manicure and pedicure, Riggs spent the evening at the Ritz-Carlton with her mother

Just as iron sharpens iron, it is in those tests that your character is strengthened. It is those tests for which I am grateful. Each of those tests of faith and trust would prove to build more faith and trust to overcome and see me through the next. would be fine and ‘We’re going to get through it.’ When trials and tribulations come against you, (your) faith is tested, but it is also strengthened.”

Her treatment plan included chemotherapy from August through December, followed by surgery and radiation. The tumor started shrinking from the first chemo treatment, and each time that she saw her doctor, she received a good report.

“For me, I was extremely nauseated, had no appetite and was fatigued,” Riggs said. “At the same time, I was trying to maintain a full-time job, children and

“That’s really what made me enter this contest,” Riggs said.

“It’s hard to repay somebody for all the care they give you. My mom was at my house almost every day for months. My sister would come out on the weekends. We’re going to hang out in the room and just have girl time.”

Riggs says the pampering also had a psychological effect.

“There has not been one day since I got this diagnosis that I haven’t thought of either the next doctor appointment or next treatment,” Riggs said. “I realized about three-quarters of the way through today that I had not thought about the c-word. That in itself is just wonderful therapy — to be able to have a day where you didn’t have to think about being sick.”

Fixing a broken system Florida’s economic development system has long been a bust, plagued by excessive bureaucracy, ponderously slow and inefficient with multiple state departments involved.

Gov. Rick Scott set out to fix it and largely did so with the substantial cooperation of Republican legislators who tried to last year but had the effort vetoed by a wet-finger governor. The right man was needed in the governor’s mansion.

First, and with the support of most Democrats in the Legislature, a unified jobs agency was created by rolling into one the Agency for Workforce Innovation, Enterprise Florida, the Florida Office of Tourism, Trade and Economic Development, Visit Florida and remnants of the ponderous Department of Community Affairs, which mercifully disappears.

The new agency, called the Department of Economic Opportunity, will have broad powers to respond to individual and industry opportunities for the state, plus access to a pot of more than $400 million that can be used for targeted industries. If government must be involved with economic development, rather than simply creating an unsurpassed environment friendly to all job-creating businesses, at least it should be streamlined, efficient and as effective as possible. Job done.

The state’s 1985 Growth Management Act is the holy grail for environmentalists and anti-growthers intent on keeping Florida expensive and unattractive. The law made de-

velopment onerous and added layers of cost.

It still happened, of course, when economic times were good, because Florida has other things going for it — beaches, sunshine, no income tax.

In bad times, the law was an anchor around the neck of a drowning economy.

And at all times, it added great expenses that became part of the formula for making housing expensive while giving unelected and unaccountable bureaucrats veto powers over the democratic decisions of local elected officials. It was long overdue for an overhaul.

A main element of undoing its worst part was to vacate the state oversight authority and allow local officials to have the final say in major development decisions. The change is hardly radical. Only five other states have state-level review of local development

decisions, but none of those has powers to the degree Florida did. Surely this is just common sense to most readers, but not to people who like centralized governmental administration for life’s decisions.

The second feature opponents try to scare you with is that the new law eliminates concurrency — the rule requiring roads and other infrastructure to be in place before development starts. But it does not. It eliminates the state-mandate for concurrency.

Any city or county can still require it, or some level of it. If local residents do not like the decisions, they can boot commissioners.

These changes and the rest in the box with this editorial will help the state’s recovery and provide private sector jobs for Floridians in a far more permanent sense than, say, taxpayer-funded high-speed rail would have.

Cutting the Tallahassee red tape Changes to the state’s growth-management law mean local communities gain more local control and a path back to economic vibrancy. Here are some major changes: • Makes optional concurrency requirements for new developments for transportation, schools and parks, rather than mandated by the state; • Expedites the comprehensive-plan amendment process, deletes the requirement that plans meet financial feasibility requirements and allows amendments every year; • Eliminates many state requirements and specifications for optional elements in a comprehensive plan but allows communities to include optional portions; • Reduces requirements for evaluations and appraisals, which add to the costs of a project and make it more expensive in the end for buyers; • Reorganizes several agencies into one controlled by the governor’s office to make Florida’s economic development office more flexible, efficient and lightening quick.

Turn off the TV. Quick!

Herein lies the case against TV and the rest of digital land used to watch video. They make us fat, lazy, dumb and horrible citizens in a democracy.

The topic here is a departure from our normal focus on Longboat Key, regional and sometimes state issues. But our bet is we are speaking to the choir here; you’ll agree with our argument, which is …

The more TV you watch, the more you become fat, dumb, lazy, anti-social and indifferent to public affairs. The TV and its kindred brain-cell suckers in digital form could yet spell the wreck of our country. And it all starts with children.

Have your attention?

Good. Because unfortunately, I do not have the attention of most people who over-participate in the TV-watching slough ROD and yet manage to find THOMSON their way to a voting booth based on some mostly untrue commercial they blurrily saw the night before between CSI:Dubuque and The Biggest Loser:Us. Sometimes you just have to step back and look at TV-land fare and, slapping yourself in the forehead, say, “What the heck am I doing?” Alas, we don’t. We crank back the La-ZBoy, pop open a Mountain Dew and rip into the Cheetos. And, therein starts the decline of Western civilization.

Ridiculous overstatement? Read on.

Amazingly, TV watching continues to rise, even with the other forms of digital entertainment vying for slacker time. In 1950, 9% of households had TVs. Today, the average U.S. household actually has more TVs than people. Check out restaurants. You can hardly find a table where a TV is not trying to mesmerize you. Sporting events? Very big TVs. Shoot, you can’t pump gasoline sometimes without having a mini-TV going above the unleaded. The Neilsen Co. reports the average American watches more than five hours of TV every day — highest rate ever.

So, we spend a lot of time in front of TV. But so what?

It dulls our brain and trains it to mildew for long periods, requiring ever greater amounts

of stimuli for entertainment. In 1953, the average length of a movie shot was 28 seconds. In 1986, it fell to 7 seconds. Today, it is 2.5 seconds and falling. That’s because we need ever more stimulation to keep our ever-shrinking attention spans engaged. But the shorter the shot, the less we retain and our brain stops trying. When you don’t use muscles, they atrophy. Tons of research backs this.

And it all starts early. The Archive of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine published a rather stunning study last year on the effects of TV on toddlers.

“We found every additional hour of TV exposure among toddlers corresponded to a future decrease in classroom engagement and success at math, increased victimization by classmates, a more sedentary lifestyle, higher consumption of junk food and, ultimately, higher body mass index,” said lead author Linda S. Pagani, a psychosocial professor at the Université de Montréal.

That should wake parents up. Studies have found the same correlation among older children and adults, and add in more aggressive behavior, messed-up sleeping patterns and sharply reduced attention spans.

And obesity? Research suggests it is partly from the sedentary act of watching TV but also from how much more people eat during the zoning-out effect of TV. We get hypnotized and keep pushing in the Cheetos.

Does all this really matter for the future of our country?

Ben Berger, professor of political science at Swarthmore College and author of Attention Deficit Democracy, writes that “the overall data tell a clear story: TV-watching correlates negatively with social and community life.”

Further, he says, “Such citizens may be tempted to delegate increasing authority to a centralized administration. Inattentive and inwardly focused, having lost the habit and art of associating, they would be unlikely to notice the erosion of their freedom.”

The future of Western civilization, right there. This seems to be a piece of the puzzle explaining what, to some of us, is inexplica-

ble: Why are so many Americans, who come from such a stock of independent pioneers, so willing to give away freedoms?

Well, with minds numbed and bodies made lethargic by TV, they don’t even see it happening. How can they be told that for every new rule, tax and giveaway from the government they are losing another slice of freedom? How can they be told that they are sleepily letting slide what others purchased with blood?

They can’t. “Hey, be quiet, ‘Glee’ is on!”

It starts young, but continues throughout life, including for the college kids, with no dumbing-down bottom in sight.

AOL is re-doing CliffsNotes summaries of classics — which was bad enough as CliffsNotes — by turning the brief summaries into even shorter, funny videos. Dostoyevsky’s “Crime and Punishment” meets Beevis and Butthead for college credit. Wonderful.

Is there some policy prescription to save us from ourselves? No. There is absolutely nothing government can or should do. If you think there is, you have already watched too much.

This, like so many solutions, starts with parents. A TV in a child’s bedroom means a 56% average increase in brain-destroying, life-wasting TV time. This is not a plea for tossing out TVs entirely — although there may be merit to the idea. Nor is it even about content — even news and documentaries run ever-faster eye candy to keep audiences.

This is about drastic moderation. Full disclosure: I saved money for a year, and a few months ago, bought a flat-screen, hi-def TV, mostly for sports and sometimes movies. It is the only TV in the house and even with six children still at home, my wife and I decide when it is on and what is watched. It’s our TV. A couple of movies a week, a couple of sports games, maybe a news program. Studies don’t show that a moderate amounts of TV is a problem. But moderate is something on the order of an hour per day. Not five.

There is only one solution. Turn off the TV, put down the smart phone and pick up a book. Or newspaper. Or play ball in the yard. Or have friends over. Or volunteer somewhere. Just turn it off, for you and your children, and just maybe, for our country.

Dear Editor: “This is time for change, and it’s a positive change, and it’s one that includes all of District 1, not just part of District 1.” — Willie Shaw, Sarasota City Commissioner As one who has an emotional and financial investment in District 1, I can only hope and pray that Willie Shaw has read and taken to heart your candid and thoughtful editorial, “Newtown needs fresh leaders,” (May 5). Your poignant call for “strong, moral, self-reliant, color-blind leadership” has long been held by many in our community but rarely expressed openly in public for obvious reasons. You are to be commended for your candor.

Shaw has a once-in-ageneration opportunity to improve the daily lives of his constituents, and should he “seize the day,” he can be assured of support from all sectors of the community. The words of Martin Luther King Jr. seem appropriate at this important juncture in the life of our city: “Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.”

Police advisory panel

The three outgoing commissioners all had parting words as they bid the commission farewell last week.

Suzanne Atwell voted against its initial creation in October 2009, but after it issued its final report, she said that she felt it did good work. She was also hesitant to approve a permanent police complaints committee, which fields complaints against officers.

“There should be no slandering,” she said. “Anyone who does should be ruled out of order. The panel should be respectful of how the majority of the police department (is good).”

“It’s been a real privilege to serve as city commissioner. It’s been a good four years, but it’s time to move on.”

Fredd Atkins:

“I bid you all adieu one more time.

Don’t make me come back. I have loved the trip. You don’t know how ready I am to leave.”

Paid parking, the mooring field, and Unconditional Surrender are just three issues in which commissioners conducted multiple meetings and held many discussions.

Parking meters, for example, was approved and then delayed at least three different times. “(Commissioners) tend to defend themselves by continuing to talk (about issues),” she said. “If we keep talking, nothing will get done.”

One area in which Atwell promises to differ from the previous administration is that of taking city staff’s advice.

Staff members have grumbled for the past couple of years that they were asked to use their expertise and education to formulate a plan and recommendation on issues that were brought before the commission, but instead of heeding that expert advice, commissioners would choose their own path.

“We need to respect staff and have trust in them,” Atwell said. “We can micromanage until the cows come home, but the citizens won’t stand for that. I have to have the ability to make policy based on (staff recommendations).”

Becoming mayor is something Atwell strived for since she first ran for office, and she is prepared to embrace that role wholeheartedly.

“I love being a city commissioner,” she said.

“I feel I can have more influence. The City Commission is the closest you’ll get to the electorate.”

Forward thinking

One phrase commission observers would frequently hear the mayor utter during her first two years on the job was, “It’s time to move forward.”

She doesn’t want to talk about an issue ad nauseam, which the last commission developed a reputation for doing.

She voted several times not to accept the donation of the statue, because of copyright lawsuit fears. In January 2010, she complained about how the deadlines for an agreement kept being pushed back.

“When do we end this? I’m tired of this,” she said.

In November 2009, she voted to approve funding for the Baltimore Orioles’ renovation of Ed Smith Stadium.

“It’s about trust,” she said. “I go with this amazing (city) staff and consultants.”

She voted Dec. 6, 2010, to accept changes to the development agreement, which required the city to build a parking garage on State Street. That garage was part of the city’s master plan, before Pineapple Square came into the picture.

“It’s time to move on,” she said. “We as a city need to hold our feet to the fire to live up to our obligations. I’m scare to death of losing the momentum.

(Developer) John Simon has breathed life into the city. We can be creative with this parking structure.”

Atwell’s vote April 18 was the lone vote in favor of a developer’s request to add 15 boat slips to a proposed hotel along Whitaker Bayou.

“We don’t need any other barrier to the development of North Trail,” she said.

Atwell hopes to change that perception.

“We’re not going to keep throwing up impediments in developing the city,” she said. “(Citizens) sometimes associate a development with the personality of the developer.

We can’t throw out the merits of the case with a development. The more development we bring in, it’s only going to help the bottom line when budget time comes.”

The City Commission has listed North Trail redevelopment as one of its top priorities this year, but last month, Atwell was the only commissioner to support Githler Development’s request to place 15 boat slips at its proposed hotel site on Whitaker Bayou.

“We don’t need any other barrier to the development of North Trail,” she said.

Githler development’s Andy Dorr is just one member of the business community who believes Atwell will be good for Sarasota.

“Suzanne has been a good friend to the business community,” he said. “She has shown that she cares about job creation.”

Dorr believes the mayor’s knowledge of how the city administration does its job will help her convince City Hall that helping small businesses and the downtown area will only bring good things to Sarasota.

The City Commission, with three new members sworn-in May 13, may be viewed, at least initially, as more business-friendly and more of a can-do board.

Commissioner Paul Caragiulo is a smallbusiness owner himself. Commissioner Shannon Snyder, a former Sarasota Planning Board member, said during his campaign that the only way to improve Sarasota’s economy is to aggressively court development. And Vice Mayor Terry Turner has opposed anything he views as being detrimental to Sarasota’s businesses, such as downtown parking meters and a small increase to the city’s business tax.

USS Sarasota crew reunites for anniversary

Run raises money for Sarasota Youth Opera

Former USS Sarasota crew members and their families held a reunion dinner Thursday, May 12, at the Hilton Garden Inn Sarasota. It was the 20th anniversary of the first USS Sarasota reunion, which was also held in Sarasota.

Following a presentation and slideshow by U.S. Navy Lt. Commander Raul Rojas, everyone feasted on dinner.

Sarasota resident Betty Shilalie, wife of former USS Sarasota crew member John Shilalie, was the event’s honored guest.

The Sarasota Opera held the Divas & Dudes 5K run Saturday, May 14, at Payne Park. The 5K drew 135 runners and raised about $3,000 for the Sarasota Youth Opera.

The 5K was run on a variety of terrain, ranging from pavement to grass to gravel.

The overall male winner was Courtland Bernard, with a time of 17:51, and the overall female winner was Meghan Jones, with a time of 24:24.

Kiwanis spelling bee buzz takes center stage

The Downtown Sarasota Kiwanis Club held a spelling bee Friday, May 13, at the Boys and Girls Club for third- and fourthgraders from more than 20 schools in Sarasota County. Paul Gardner, chairman of the event, joined the Kiwanis Club last year and wanted to get involved in a project that fit with the Kiwanis Club motto: “One child and one community at a time.”

The spelling bee had to be broken into two bees, one for the third-graders and one for the fourth-graders, due to the high number of participants — more than 150.

The first- through third-place winners received prizes, including U.S. Savings Bonds. Third-grade winners were: first place, Veronica Gill, Ashton Elementary; second place, Jaiden Perry, Bay Haven School of Basics Plus; and third place, Sierra McKenzie, Brentwood Elementary.

Fourth-grade winners were: first place, Brenna Nopper, Gulf Gate Elementary; second place, Nathan Epstein, Bay Haven; and third place, Jamariah Barber, Alta Vista Elementary.

FULBRIGHT SCHOLARS • 2011-12 Six students will study abroad next year as Fulbright Scholars, bringing New College’s historical total to 63 Fulbright recipients and reinforcing the College’s ranking as one of the nation’s top producers of this prestigious award.

Christopher Hanks, of Seffner, Fla., will teach in Guyane (French Guiana) and Tess Somerville, of Newport, R.I., will teach in Provence, France. Fifteen New College of Florida students have been awarded the coveted French Government Teaching Assistantships since 2000.

BARRy M. GOLdwATeR SCHOLARSHIp Cody Gunton, a third-year student from Jupiter, Fla., was awarded a prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for his work in number theory. He is one of only 275 students to be named a 2011 Goldwater Scholar. This summer Cody will study with mathematician William Hoffman at Louisiana State University, during a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) funded by the National Science Foundation.

He plans to pursue a Ph.D. in mathematics.

FedeRAL FUndInG FOR SUMMeR STUdy A number of students received federal grants to conduct research this summer at New College and other universities, in fields ranging from astrophysics and archaeology to plant cell biology and nanotechnology. When he realized he no longer had them, he went back to the pool, but the hearing aids were gone.

Grand Theft. A couple was holding a First Communion party for their daughter at their home. During the party, the mother noticed a guest’s purse sitting on her bedside table. The father later saw the guest by herself in the bedroom. The next morning, the mother discovered that 36 pieces of jewelry, worth $10,000, were missing from her jewelry box. She called the guest, who denied taking the jewelry.

The mother tried to call her again the next day, but the number had been disconnected. Sheriff’s detectives are now on the case.

An officer listened to several of the messages and wrote in his report that he “heard mostly a crying female telling (him) that she loved him.” In addition to the messages, about 20 plants had been pulled out of the ground in the man’s front yard. He believed his ex did that as well. The man asked the officer if a trespassing warning that was issued against the woman about a year ago was still in effect.

An officer went to the house in question, and the father said the baby was simply teething and was uncomfortable. The officer looked the baby over, and nothing appeared to be out of the ordinary.

hen s/ART/q hosted its second T-shirt screen-printing party last fall, Brian Haverlock was there, quietly inking dozens of cotton shirts with

a pink sketch of a bunnyeared, stumpy-armed, mustachioed baby.

The design wasn’t the most popular T-shirt of the night, but it was among one of the most interesting.

It had a quiet peculiarity and a subtle freakishness.

What it lacked in mass appeal, it made up for in quirk appeal.

Haverlock seemed fine with that.

“I never considered them finished works,” Haverlock says of his postcard-sized collages. “And then I sold 20 of them at our State Street show.” starting point for painting, was thrilled to pair up with Haverlock for this exhibit.

“Brian has a range in his work,” Jaeger says. “On one hand he’s very tight and obsessive; photorealism to the nth degree. On the other hand he can be very loose and almost abstract or non-objective. The eye gets to play between these two varieties. It makes his work delicious to look at.”

To fully grasp Haverlock’s range, you must first study his cluttered studio — an extra bedroom plastered with magazine tear-outs, loopy sketches, stacks of art books and piles of 4-by-6-inch cards collaged with disembodied heads pasted on top of oddly proportionate bodies.

Most of Haverlock’s early works are tiny high-technical drawings rendered in graphite.

A handyman, he builds most of his frames using recycled wood. He says it gives his work a vintage finish, “an objectiveness.”

I’m busy exploring and experimenting.”

He found both in Sarasota: His girlfriend is s/ART/q member and artist Sabrina Small, with whom he shares a disdain for cars and television.

“We share a common language,” he says of Small. “There’s also a healthy sense of competition. We’ve learned not to apply to the same grants and galleries.”

Reaching for a wooden box titled “Seed of Ichthys,” Haverlock points to what looks like a sacred scarab beetle in the center plank.

It was once a dead cicada bug that he plucked from his windowsill and gilded to the front of his work.

During an open studio last summer, a little girl was so captivated by the little bug she reached out to touch it and squished the skeleton with her finger. So Haverlock replaced it with another windowsill insect.

“You know how it is when you’re a kid,” he says. “You want to touch everything.”

“I like juxtaposition,” Haverlock says. “I like blurring social norms with things that you might not expect.”

Like a baby with bunny ears, a moustache and missing hands?

“Exactly,” Haverlock says.

As an artist, Haverlock is influenced by iconography, theology, mythology and the musings of Joseph Campbell. He likes to work small; so small, in fact, that you have to put your nose up to his panels to appreciate all the details.

“Small-scale work invites contemplation,” he says. “There’s a sense of intimacy.

I like that people have to get up close to see it. It’s less confrontational that way.”

Haverlock could just as well be describing himself.

A 40-year-old, former Franciscan friar from North Dakota, he frequently refers to himself as a “draftsman,” which is a modest title given the artist has work hanging in corporate and private collections from Costa Rica to New York.

An adjunct professor at Ringling College of Art and Design, Haverlock holds a bachelor’s degree in painting from East Carolina University and a master’s degree in theology from Washington Theological Union, in Washington, D.C. If his name and work sound familiar, it’s because he’s a founding member of s/ ART/q, the Sarasota artists collective that launched three years ago as an exhibiting vehicle for contemporary artists who were left gallery-less when Greene Contemporary closed its doors in 2008.

This Saturday, he and s/ART/q President Tim Jaeger will collaborate on a joint show separate from the group’s usual large-scale exhibitions.

“Rough and Ready: The Work of Brian Haverlock and Tim Jaeger” will feature Jaeger’s and Haverlock’s drawings at various stages of completion.

The 42-year-old Canadian pianist, actor, playwright and composer arrived in Sarasota this week carrying the weight of two beloved Broadway stars on his shoulders.

Felder, who’s married to former Canadian Prime Minister Kim Campbell, has performed his oneman show, “George Gershwin Alone,” more than 2,750 times in 10 years.

Lucky for the Asolo Repertory Theatre, he recently introduced Bernstein into his solo repertoire —

a rotation that also includes Chopin and Beethoven, by the way.

“From an emotional standpoint and in terms of my own musical tastes, I’m closest to the style and sensitivity of Chopin,” Felder says. “What’s fun about creating these characters is that they are so unlike me. It’s great fun to bring them to life.”

Felder’s “George Gershwin Alone,” which opened May 18, at the Asolo Rep, runs through June 5. By special engagement, “MAESTRO: The Art of Leonard Bernstein” will run June 8 to June 12.

“There are a lot of connections with this show,” says JRA director Julie Rohr McHugh. “It’s just a super-colorful, high-energy, big, crazy show.”

The former curator of academic initiatives at Cornell Fine Arts Museum, at Rollins College, in Winter Park, McLendon, who was hired last year by Ringling, is the first modern and contemporary art curator the museum has seen in 15 years.

His arrival couldn’t come at a better time for the museum, which has garnered even more national attention, thanks to the Ringling International Arts Festival and its lineup of hot up-and-coming performing-arts acts.

“The museum understood that to stay relevant, you have to offer a broad range of art,” McLendon says. “It’s not that mod-

Now over a year in the making, “Beyond Bling” is McLendon’s biggest project to date.

The exhibit, which features the work of Gajin Fujita, Luis Gispert, Sofia Maldonado, Nadine Robinson, Mickalene Thomas, Hank Willis Thomas, Kehinde Wiley, Iona Rozeal Brown and Vince Fras-

er, also includes three performances May 19 to May 21 by Puremovement, a Philadelphia-based, hip-hop dance ensemble led by Rennie Harris, whom McLendon describes as a the “godfather of hip-hop choreography.”

The curator says he’s not worried that “Bling” will struggle to find an audience in Sarasota.

“I think one of the things that people will come to understand is that hip-hop culture is ubiquitous,” McLendon says. “Whether you know it or not, it informs all aspects of our lives. I mean, even the word ‘bling.’

Most people know what that means.”

For those who don’t know what that means, the museum has compiled a glossary of street vocabulary to serve as a reference manual for hip-hop neophytes.

“Some of our older patrons might not have Jay-Z on their iPods, but their grandchildren do,” McLendon says. “One of the things I’m hoping this show will do is spark intergenerational dialogue. I can’t think of anything better to come out of an exhibition.”

At first glance, Matthew McLendon seems like an unlikely catalyst for a hiphop-influenced art exhibit at The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. The museum’s 6-foot-4 associate curator of modern and contemporary art grew up in a small town outside of St. Augustine studying opera and piano.

A graduate of Florida State University, he received his bachelor’s degree in music and art history before heading off to England for his master’s degree and Ph.D. in art history at the University of London’s Courtauld Institute of Art. During that time, McLendon worked at the Tate Britain, a 114-year-old gallery that houses British art from the year 1500 to today. The experience solidified his decision to stop singing and pursue a career as an art curator, an occupation that McLendon, 34, says invigorates him and keeps his mind sharp.

None of this, however, explains the art aficionado’s unabashed love affair with hip-hop music.

“I am the hip-hop generation,” McLendon says. “I’ve not known the world without hip-hop. When I was a kid, those were the CDs I bought, the tapes I bought.

Growing up in rural North Florida, it really defined my view of the urban existence.

MTV was my world.”

“Beyond Bling: Voices of Hip-Hop in Art,” which opens this Saturday at the Ringling Museum, is McLendon’s love letter to a creative culture that rarely receives attention from art institutions.

It’s an exhibit that he says has been brewing in the “dark recesses” of his mind for years.
