+ Broadway Bar veggies out at neighboring garden During the Historical Society Potluck Picnic on the Porch Saturday, Broadway Bar owner Carolyn Heath, above, could be seen watering a vegetable garden at the Bidwell House. Growing in the garden — maintained by the Broadway Bar — is oregano, parsley, tomatoes, peppers and, soon to come, broccoli. Earlier that morning, Heath picked handfuls of fresh herbs with which she made a salad for the potluck.

+ New College poet celebrates first book of poems Alexis Orgera, above, held a book-release party for her first book of poetry, “How Like Foreign Objects,” Saturday, May 14, at Red Panty Press Studio, in The Rosemary District. Orgera’s friends, family and poetry fans came out for the event, which included food and drinks, along with a display of artwork based on select poems from Orgera’s book. The artwork was done by local artists, many of whom are members of the Uprise Art Collective. Orgera read the poems from her book that went along with the pieces of art to a crowd of more than 50 people. Orgera graduated from New College in ’99 and is now the assistant director of the Writing Resource Center at her alma mater.
Leading Lady Newly appointed Mayor Suzanne Atwell says the citizens of Sarasota can look forward to a number of changes under her leadership, including being more friendly to business, more attentive to city staff and more likely to get things done in a timely fashion.
