For the past 14 years, Eisele has been ordering flowers for any event that calls for them — especially Easter. With the help of parish member Marian Wallace, whose specialty is picking perfect palm fronds for Palm Sunday, the women always keep the church looking its best.

“The guys actually dress up a lot and are color coordinated from head to toe,” said Ashley Harris, BHS English teacher and junior board adviser. “They’ll match lime green shoes with a vest.”

If the board can get the specifics figured out, the pinnacle of the evening will be a balloon drop in the middle of the dance floor.

Kate Phinney was sitting at DaRuMa with her boyfriend when the chef spelled out “prom” in oil and then lit it on fire.

However, her friend Gabbie Amontree beat her boyfriend to the punch.

“I work at Big Olaf with my boyfriend — that’s how we met — and I thought it was appropriate to ask him there,” Amontree said. “One day he was counting money, and I set up all these gummy bears. I wrote ‘John, will you go to prom with me?’ It took me like 15 minutes.”

A year before teacher Jason Mocherman became the senior class adviser, prom was held in the RHS cafeteria. Other locations have included the Sarasota Bradenton International Convention Center and the Hyatt, but the location moved in 2007 to the Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota.

“When I first took over the senior class, nobody was putting effort into it,” Mocherman said. “The kids have one senior year, one chance for homecoming and prom — it’s important for me that they get the chance to do that.”

The students selected “Tomorrow Never Dies” as this year’s theme to symbolize moving on and the future. Although the Ritz-Carlton handles most of the decorating, such as color-changing flashing lights on the walls, the prom committee is making this year’s prom special by adding a five-course menu for dinner, a pre-function socialization area and an ice sculpture.

They’re also creating an on-site prom king and queen voting booth.

The Riverview prom committee says the trend for dresses is bright, popping colors and classic navy and long, strapless and one-shoulder styles.

But, as for the music, there are some stipulations for Saturday’s big event.

“We have a no-Justin-Bieber clause on music this year,” Mocherman says.

For the past five years, Sarasota High School’s prom theme has been “Under the Sea” every other year. Not wanting to indulge in a sea fantasy again this year, the prom committee broke tradition and opted for “Black Tie Affair.”

On May 14, the prom committee will be filling giant vases with water and using food coloring to dye the water red, then adding candles, as they transform the Hyatt ballroom into prom perfection.

“We want it to be elegant, simplistic, chic and very classy,” said Juleah Aiken.

Mermaid dresses are the hot item at Sarasota High School, along with patterned dresses. The junior girls who attend prom usually wear shorter dresses; seniors opt for longer options.

Aside from narrowing down the song list — Lil Wayne’s “Bring It Back” is No. 1 on the three-page list for the DJ — all that’s left for the committee is to make the favors and create the grand entrance: white columns and cardboard letters spray-painted gold and wrapped with lights.

“We’ve had this DJ before,” committee member Taylor Rapaport said. “It took us months last year to find him. Our DJ says he’s really here for the kids, but if we get too ‘grindy,’ he’ll put on a slow song.”

Lame-duck move stirs controversy City counters

An outgoing commissioner’s desire to reappoint members to the Planning Board next week, so that the new commission won’t have a say, has critics raising fairness questions.

What should be a routine appointment process for a city advisory board has evolved into a political fight.

“This stinks, politically,” said City Commissioner-elect Paul Caragiulo.

Two Sarasota Planning Board members, Susan Chapman and Chris Gallagher, have terms expiring at the end of May. Three new city commissioners — a majority — will be sworn into office May 13.

The new commission was expected to decide whether Chapman and Gallagher would be reappointed, however, outgoing Commissioner Dick Clapp asked that the appointment process for the Planning Board, and all other boards with expiring terms, be moved to Monday, May 2 — the last regular commissioner meeting for himself, Mayor Kelly Kirschner and Vice Mayor Fredd Atkins.

Clapp said he wanted to make sure experienced members were reappointed and didn’t want to risk having the new commission place inexperienced members on the board.

“Planning Board members really benefit from a couple of years of experience,” he said. “We have a history of reappointing sitting members.”

But some are questioning the fairness

of shifting the reappointment date, because it was not advertised publicly, possibly reducing the number of people who would apply for one of the spots.

Only one other person has applied for a seat on the board, former City Commission candidate Richard Dorfman.

“It was my understanding that this wasn’t going to be addressed until the new commission was seated,” Dorfman said. “I don’t think it’s fair. Outgoing commissioners should not be deciding this.”

Caragiulo agreed.

“It’s an important board, and I would like to see a robust number of applications come in,” he said.

It appears city code may back up those complaints.

According to city attorney Bob Fournier, the code states that advisory-board terms that expire in May would need to be publicly advertised in February — 90 days before expiration.

“I can understand why someone would think it’s inappropriate (to move up the date),” said Fournier.

Commissioners Suzanne Atwell and Terry Turner, who will both be part of the new commission, said they questioned the move and wanted to hear Fournier’s opinion at the May 2 meeting.

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW?

“I’m uncomfortable with a lame-duck commission trying to push an agenda through,” said Turner. “Unless there’s compelling testimony (to make the appointments May 2), I may ask that it be moved (to a later date).”

Not everyone is concerned, however.

Commissioner-elect Shannon Snyder, who is a former Planning Board member, said he didn’t have a problem with not being involved in the selection process.

“It’s politics, man. It’s just the way it is,” he said. “I don’t think the city lives and dies by the Planning Board.”

Chapman and Gallagher had different takes on the controversy.

Gallagher believes if the rule is for his seat to be advertised, then it should be advertised.

He wasn’t informed that his reappointment could be happening May 2.

Chapman said City Auditor and Clerk Pamela Nadalini had told her in March that the reappointment hearing would happen at the first commission meeting in May. “I have no position on fairness, because Pam said it was happening in May,” Chapman said. “Planning staff had told me that reappointment was merely a formality, anyway.”

Palm Avenue spruce-up in the works The Downtown Improvement District is ready to use its tax dollars to help spruce up both North and South Palm Avenue.

By now, Eileen Hampshire is used to doing things herself.

Her shop, Art to Walk On, has been on Palm Avenue for five years. And for all five years, she has had to take care of her own landscaping and sidewalk cleaning — just like all other storeowners on Palm Avenue.

“Everybody on Palm pays out of their own pocket,” Hampshire said.

But financial help may be on the way.

The Downtown Improve-

ment District is planning to set up a meeting with Palm Avenue business owners to see what kind of improvements they’d like to see on their street.

Palm Avenue shop owners have felt forgotten in the DID’s improvement plans, even though they pay taxes into the district.

Most of the DID’s focus has been on Main Street and Five Points Park, but many on Palm Avenue feel because their

street already looks nice that it’s been ignored.

“A couple of years ago we were really annoyed,” said Hampshire.

That was when Hampshire noticed that the city had a watering truck dousing plants lining Main Street. She asked that it visit Palm Avenue to do the same there.

“They said, ‘No. It’s only for Main Street,’” she recalls.

“Then I discovered (the city) picks up trash, sweeps side-

walks and plants plants on Main Street.”

DID Chairman Ernie Ritz said he wants to help Palm Avenue spruce up and maintain the plant beds along the sidewalk.

Hampshire will also ask DID for hanging plant baskets to line the street, as well as more large flowerpots.

However, she’s not entirely unhappy with the way things have turned out.

“Looking back, it’s not a bad thing (the city didn’t fund Palm Avenue), because our street looks better than theirs,” she said.

British press accounts

The murders of two British tourists in Newtown sparked a rush of tabloid stories, many of which contained unverified accounts of why the men were in that neighborhood and how Sarasota is a ‘gangland.’

After two British tourists were gunned down in Newtown two weeks ago, some British tabloids began spreading misinformation through unsubstantiated theories.

As a town that makes its living through tourism, bad press is bad news for Sarasota.

Community leaders had to weigh whether to fight back or let the story cycle just run its course.

“The basic tenet of crisis management is don’t fan the flames with strong denials,” said Virginia Haley, president of the Sarasota Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Not long after James Cooper and James Kouzaris were fatally shot, the British press descended on Sarasota to report on the crimes.

Sensationalism took over in the tabloids, with characterizations of Sarasota as a “gangland.”

At last week’s City Commission meeting, Mayor Kelly Kirschner asked the city’s public information officer, Jan Thornburg, and community leaders to fight some of the misinformation.

Thornburg said she had received several phone calls about theories with no attribution from the Sarasota Police Department or any other official agency.

“They just make things up,” she said.

The Convention and Visitors Bureau has been closely monitoring all news accounts and will correct false information when it is published, such as when one paper that reported the crime happened in broad daylight at 3 p.m., instead of 3 a.m.

“We are correcting any errors,” Haley said.

Haley has also contacted the British tourism board and offered Florida experts for media outlets to interview to get across the point that this type of crime against tourists is extremely rare.

The SCVB has also invited several British journalists to visit Sarasota within the next two weeks to see the community, and it is negotiating with a British radio show to broadcast from Sarasota.

The major question, however, is what kind of impact has all this news had on tourism.

So far, the answer is, according to Haley, none.

“We have checked with major tour operators,” she said. “They’ve received not one phone call with questions, and there has been not a single cancellation.”

Local hotel operators also reported no cancelled reservations as a result of the shooting.

“We frequently have British guests,” said Prudie Varro, manager of Sunsets on the Key. “We’ve had no cancellations.”

In fact, some British tourists, who frequently visit Sarasota, have rushed to the city’s defense, emailing the city to offer its support and let leaders know that they realize that Sarasota is a safe place to visit.

“I have never felt threatened on any of my visits,” wrote Bill Hurst. “We are looking forward to spending more time in beautiful Siesta Key with the friendly people and wonderful climate.”

“The stories (in the British press) are already moving toward the back of the papers,” said Haley.

+ DID could gerrymander new boundaries As the Downtown Improvement District explores expanding east on Main Street, it will consider drawing its boundary around properties not wanting to be included.

The DID is a special taxing district created in 2008 to fund downtown improvements, such as landscaping, lighting and security.

The tax, which is a maximum of 2 mills, or $200 on $100,000 worth of property, is only levied on commercial properties.

The current boundary runs roughly from Goodrich Avenue west to Gulfstream Avenue and Second Street south to Ringling Boulevard, but the DID board is beginning to discuss enlarging its eastern boundary to U.S. 301.

The idea, according to Chairman Ernie Ritz, is to improve the look of the more barren middle section of Main Street — from Orange Avenue to Links Avenue — with landscaping and bulbouts.

However, because many of the

properties in that area are office buildings, it’s not clear whether their owners will see any value in paying the tax.

That’s why board members believe it’s OK to leave them out of the DID. “I’m OK with gerrymandering,” said Ritz. “If the owners in the 1900 block (of Main Street), which is already very active, don’t want to take part, I’m OK with that.”

The DID’s existing boundaries were also drawn around a few properties that do not pay into the district.

The only requirement is that the DID’s boundaries be contiguous.

Surveys of the space are expected to be complete in the next week or two. Then, an appraisal will be conducted.

The City Commission has instructed the city manager to sell the space for either the $1.9 million cost of construction or the appraised value, whichever is higher.

Commissioners also want the space to be sold as a whole and then let the buyer subdivide it if he wishes.

Scaring voters When rational discourse fails to win the day politically, sometimes all that is left is hyperbolic scare tactics. We saw that predictably enough when President Obama’s response to the budget proposals by Republicans in the U.S. House was to scare old people with charges that Republicans want to take away their health care and Social Security. A complete lie, but it has always worked in the past.

Now we see the same thing at work in an elections reform bill that has passed the Florida House and is near passage in the Senate. The bills are not identical, but the thrust is to limit the voter fraud that has been too apparent in our voting in recent elections, particulary in some of Florida’s biggest counties.

Democrats and their allies have pulled the hyperbolic scare card, calling it a “voter suppression” bill. Brad Ashley of Florida PIRG, a non-partisan — and we use that term lightly — advocacy group, said: “We are looking at eliminating minority votes, student votes and women’s votes.”

Oh puleeeze. Here is the provision that opponents find most egregious: If a voter’s name or address does not match voting records, perhaps because of divorce or marriage, those votes become provisional and are counted later, when their accuracy is shown. This is meant to curb the problem with double-voting, which disenfranchises honest voters.

But why shouldn’t there be a little inconvenience when voting? This is a sacred right in our nation, and there is nothing that suggests we should make voting effortless for those too ignorant or too lazy or even too busy. If a few minutes of inconvenience will hamper turnout among some voters, they probably have taken no time to inform themselves of the issues and candidates and just want to pull a party lever. Frankly, we don’t think that kind of voter should be encouraged.

It’ll shake you. One of his factoids: If Congress stopped all spending today and devoted $100 million a day to paying off the national debt, it would take 389 years to pay it off.

+ Scott’s low polls reflect back policies Dear Editor: I couldn’t disagree with your statements more. Falling poll numbers of those who voted for a winning candidate are also predictable when those voters find that their “winner” misled them. If Gov. Scott believes in streamlining government, why does he want to add drug testing for so many job and social-service applicants? We need only to see where the fees for these tests will end up.

The governor isn’t even pretending to care about the future of Florida. We need to protect our environment, not let the phosphate or oil industries ramp up at the same time that he removes environmental regulations. We need to ensure that the

education of our children meets the changing needs of our scientific and technological industries; we shouldn’t cut more!

I would like to see Florida bring back an income tax for those making more than $200,000 a year! I’m not even close to that category, but I would willingly pay a few thousand dollars more a year if it means that we can protect our land, educate our children and have health care for all (especially through a singlepayer system). This will attract people to our state. I believe there are many voters like me who understand that it is healthy to share prosperity. Scott’s actions show exactly who he cares about and what he doesn’t.

Sometimes polls state the obvious.

Dear Editor: After reading your April 21 article, I wrote the following.

The controversy about reading prayers at the beginning of local government meetings has resurfaced in Sarasota City Commission meetings.

Our Founding Fathers had good reason to separate church and state when they created this country back in the 18th century. They were well aware of the injustices, which had taken place in Europe, where England, France and Spain had state religions. However, they did not call for separation of state and God. To the contrary, down through the years our country has recognized the importance of God in our daily lives and in our government operations. This appears on our coinage, which states “In God We Trust,” and on the walls in courthouses, which list the 10 Commandments.

There are two prime examples from the 20th century of what happens in a godless state. Nazi Germany with its Holocaust and Communist Russia. Both countries ignored God’s teaching and caused havoc to themselves and the world. And, as to be expected, they are fading into history as a prime example of what not to do.

And in today’s world, we still see so many examples of how or-

thodox religious leaders ignore the teachings of the founders of their religion. Whether it is child abuse in the Catholic Church or jihads by Islamic fundamentalists.

It is sad and tragic, but we find so many examples of how the actions of leaders and followers in Christian, Judaism and Islam churches stray from the teachings of the founders of their religion. It becomes increasingly important to keep the separation of church and state. For outsiders, it is easy to see hypocrisy in all their houses.

However, don’t let us go down the path of eliminating God from our government and ourselves.

Anyone can deny the existence of God; however, they do not have the right to keep the rest of us from acknowledging His presence and his guiding hand in all of our affairs.

Traditionally, these organizations have charged $5 for parking during spring-training games and split the proceeds among themselves. Not anymore.

On Feb. 22, without public discussion, the Sarasota County Commission approved via its consent agenda a parking licensing agreement with the Baltimore Orioles. The agreement increases parking fees at the public park to $9 during springtraining games. The additional $4 goes to the Orioles. The 2011 parking revenues, totaling $22,482, were divided as follows: • $1,471 taxes • $2,498 non-profit payout • $4,114 Sarasota youth baseball • $3,085 SW District Parents Council • $3,086 Ringling Redskins • $8,228 Orioles The Sarasota County Commission has pulled funding from city parks. Fees for youth activities have increased. At the same time, our County Commission and administration worked to find one more way to line the Orioles pockets at our expense.

What could an extra $8,228 have done for Sarasota’s children and parks?

It’s a disgraceful wealth transfer — from children’s activities to a billionaire baseball team owner. Shame on our County Commission.

Brookside students engage in Earth Day celebration About four years ago, Brookside Middle School teacher Susan Roberts started having her classes build eco-friendly showerheads as part of an Earth Day project. The purpose was to be able to shower in the event of a hurricane.

Brookside held a fun-filled day of Earth Day activities Thursday, April 21 that encompassed everything from paper bag painting and garbage bag races to a water toss, water carry game, stamping activities using vegetables and a rain barrel toss.

Robert Martini Robert Martini got into prone paddleboarding seven years ago while he was living in Hawaii. Since falling in love with the sport, Martini, a lifeguard on Siesta Key, has expanded his pastime to include feats such as paddleboarding the entire coastline of Sarasota County, 36 miles from Longboat Key to Englewood Beach, to raise money for the Junior Lifeguard Program. Last weekend Martini competed in the 11th annual Florida State Paddleboarding Championships and came in seventh in his age group.

Q &A What is the difference between prone paddleboarding and stand-up paddleboarding?

Basically, you’re on your belly or on your knees using your arms to propel yourself through the water like a surfboard. It’s much faster on your knees than it is on your belly.

With stand-up paddling, obviously you’re standing up with a paddle in your hand and propelling yourself through the water using a paddle, which covers more of a surface area than using your arms. But prone paddlers have been known to beat stand-up paddlers any day.

I’m getting back into race season form. I’ve been averaging about 24 miles of paddling a week. So, I’m in the water about four out of the five days I work. On my days off, I’m doing strength training at the gym and doing land stuff. Running and going to the pool to swim to build up strength in my shoulders.

April 17 New sport?

3:10 a.m. — South Osprey Avenue. Suspicious Incident. Two young boys were seen hurling things at cars using their lacrosse sticks.

April 18 Mad biker 12:06 p.m. — 900 block of John Ringling Causeway. Suspicious Person. A man on a bicycle riding toward Lido Key was seen trying to run people over, while yelling profanity.

In the dark 8:50 p.m. — 7100 block of Prosperity Circle. Prowler. A woman was in her bedroom, when she heard a tap on her window. She looked outside and saw a young man looking at her. She said she’s seen him hanging around her house for a couple of weeks, and he is always watching her. Deputies searched for the young man but could not find him.

Pool party 11 p.m. — 2600 block of Mall Drive.

Battery. A woman and a friend were playing pool inside a bar. Another woman was playing pool with her friend at another table. The two couples began arguing over who was next in line to play at a third table. The argument escalated and friend No. 2 hit friend No. 1 in the face. The two women walked out of the bar and continued to argue. Woman No. 2 then punched woman No. 1 in the nose. The sheriff’s office was called. Both No. 2s were arrested.

Corner Tamiami Trail. A cab driver picked up a customer and drove him to a pharmacy at Bee Ridge Road and McIntosh Road, then to other pharmacies in Manatee County, then to a bank at the above address to withdraw money from an ATM. The customer got out of the cab and never returned. His fare was standing at $144. Previously, the suspect had left his phone number with the cab company. Several items in the cab helped police identify him.

Supermarket creep 5 p.m. — 3400 block of Clark Road.

Battery. A middle-age man asked a supermarket employee to help him to his car with his groceries. As they walked to his car, he placed his hand on her upper back and slid it down to her middle back.

She began to feel uncomfortable. Once at the car, he asked her to load the bags into the front seat. When she was done, she turned around to see that he had blocked her in with the shopping cart. He told her he wasn’t going to let her go without a hug. She refused, so he grabbed her and hugged her. He then said, “Now do I get a smooch?” She was able to get away, and he called to her, “All right, then, next time.

I’ll see you soon.” She called the sheriff’s office with a description of the man.

The ol’ raccoon excuse 10:03 p.m. — 2700 of Coventry Drive.

Loitering and Prowling. A man walked out of his garage and spotted a teenager standing between his home and the woman’s home next door. The teen ran away.

The man said the teen looked like the boy who the woman saw standing in her backyard the previous week. At the time, she asked him what he was doing there, and he replied that he had seen a raccoon. The boy lives down the block, and deputies are paying him a visit.

The Winds Of Opportunity

“Forget stocks. Don’t bet on gold. After four years of plunging home prices, the most attractive asset class in America is housing.”

So began a reassessment of the real estate market by a major media outlet that appeared throughout last week’s news cycle.

Lest you suspect these words were penned by someone with a vested interest in selling new or existing homes, brace yourself for a surprise.

Instead, this was the sub-headline for an article on today’s recovering real estate market entitled “Real Estate: It’s Time to Buy Again.”

Authored by Shawn Tully, senior editor-at-large at Fortune Magazine/ CNNMoney.com, his only vested interest is giving the best advice to his audience of nine million affluent investors.

Confused? With all the conflicting news appearing daily about the real estate market, we’d be surprised if you weren’t. But even in market’s such as ours, with a troublesome backlog of distressed properties to sell before we can get back to basics, the winds of opportunity are blowing favorably. Quite frankly, its becoming harder and harder to find articles about the real estate market where the negatives outweigh the positives.

We won’t even discuss Tully’s hugely upbeat assessment of what he terms the “non-distressed” markets—so named because they avoided the nastier side effects of the bubble—except to say that their shrunken inventories of homes have placed them on the cusp of a strong market.

Markets like ours—which Tully labels as the “foreclosure markets”— got this way largely because of their inherent desirability. People want to live in warm, sunny locations; especially the 76 million trendsetting Baby Boomers who are poised to hang up their careers, head south and reinvent retirement. According to a new survey by the Pew Research Center, fully eight-in-ten adults agree that buying a home is still the best long-term investment a person can make.

Similarly, the economic turbulence of the past few years has done little to deter younger buyers from actively pursuing home ownership, according to a new study commissioned by the National Association of Home Builders. Gen X’ers—or those 51 million Americans between the ages of 31 and 45—are also expected to take a leading role in the housing recovery, especially as it pertains to fueling new construction. With better than 9 out of 10 saying that now is a good time to buy a new home, their motivation is not solely about price. It’s also about owning “something compelling and unique, from a design or personal standpoint.”

The challenge in foreclosure markets is to absorb the unprecedented wave of distressed properties, whose unnatural influence on pricing has caused these markets to become grossly undervalued. Many of these properties are what Tully calls such “screaming deals” that investors both large and small are buying them—often in bulk—and leasing them in what remains of today’s strong rental market.

Meanwhile, thousands of would-be buyers—many of whom sat-out the real estate downturn as renters—are being advised to step-up and buy. In more than half of the 54 markets examined in a new study by Deutsche Bank, it is now cheaper—often by far—to pay the mortgage and other costs of owning a home than it is to rent the same house.

Once most foreclosures are sold and these markets experience fresh demand without the corresponding downward pressure on prices, home prices are expected to rise rather sharply. If all outstanding foreclosures enter their markets at a fairly even pace, William Wheaton—an economist with MIT—believes most will be absorbed between now and the end of 2013. Such a scenario nixes the notion that it will be many years before our market fully recovers. More to the point, well-priced homes and condominiums are suddenly flying off the shelf so quickly that buyers here are noticing a greatly diminished selection of good properties.

Stranger than fiction Author Susan Kelley veers from her self-help comfort zone to pen a memoir about her time on ‘Oprah’ and all the amusing anecdotes in between.

usan Kelley has a way with words — in person and in print.

Her fifth and latest book, “I Oprahed,” says so much in just two words (one of which isn’t even a word) you don’t believe Kelley when she says she never set out to be a writer.

Especially since she Oprahed.

By that, she means she appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” — the zenith of all television zeniths for any writer hungry for exposure.

It happened 19 years ago, and it’s still the author’s biggest claim to fame.

“I titled the book ‘I Oprahed,’ be-

cause no matter what happens in my life, my most defining moment is still when I went on ‘Oprah,’” Kelley says. “You tell people, ‘My daughter is a doctor,’ and nothing registers.

You tell them, ‘I was on Oprah’ and it’s like ‘Oh, gawd! What was it like?

What was SHE like?’”

So, we’ll cut to the chase.

Oprah was nice, polite, funny, smart and attractive. She threw Kelley more time than the usual relationship expert, which was how the author was pegged when she appeared on the show before three warring couples.

It was well before Dr. Phil had come on the scene, and Kelley’s blunt sense of humor and tell-it-like-it-is attitude made her a hit with the audience.

It also didn’t hurt that she resembled Michelle Pfeiffer, despite being a decade older than Pfeiffer.

A former model and actress from Boston, Kelley was 45 at the time. She was at the height of a new and somewhat unexpected career as a self-help author having just penned her second book, “Why Men Commit,” a kind of business manual for women in aimless relationships.

Inspired by her second marriage to Sarasota artist William Kelley, the book would go on to sell millions of copies.

“I was in such a panic sitting there,” Kelley says. “I was thinking, ‘I’m supposed to advise these couples? Who am I?’ I felt like an imposter. But, then again, it comes down to: What are you there for? You’re there to sell books, because, let’s face it. At the end of the day, these people go home and still have the same problems.”

“I always felt I could say things that were humorous because I wasn’t a psychologist,” Kelley says of the wit and capriciousness that’s endeared her to readers. “If I had the schooling of a psychiatrist or psychologist, I might be more apt to follow certain rules.”

The author looks so comfortable dressed head-to-toe in black, with her feet up the couch, glasses teetering on the tip of her nose, that you feel compelled to share with her your sordid secrets as you would in the company of a psychologist.

Kelley’s first three books landed her on “The Early Show,” CBS News, MSNBC, FOX and hundreds of radio programs.

The mother of two children, now 40 and 41, Kelley was single for 17 years between her two marriages.

She was 36 when she published her first work, “Real Women Send Flowers,” a humor book loaded with messages of female empowerment spurred by what Kelley calls “the ridiculous dates” she went on as a single mother.

The title was plucked from an actual note Kelley included with a bouquet of flowers she had delivered to an ex-boyfriend on his birthday.

“Humor books were big then and the whole women’s movement thing … the timing was just right,” Kelley says. “Everyone was growing underarm hair and not wearing makeup.

I remember Betty Friedan came to one of my book signings and left in a big huff because it was held in the cosmetics department. Big deal, right? I mean, she had makeup on.”

She laughs at the memory, tickled in a

sense, by Friedan’s brush-off.

It would appear that this — Kelley’s laidback candor mixed with hard-earned wisdom — is what makes her a worthy confidante.

She’s motherly and sisterly, self-deprecating and unafraid to drop a proper curse word when the moment strikes.

“I Oprahed” is a collection of essays on aging, traveling, beauty, famous friends, thong bikinis, aging parents and adult children. It opens, appropriately, with Kelley’s “Oprah” experience.

“It reads like the menopausal mind wandering,” Kelley says. “You know it’s funny because everyone is telling me 60 is the new 40, but it’s not. At 40, you still feel like your whole life is ahead of you. Your kids are still young. Your parents are still well. At 60, you’re dealing with more issues. You may feel 40, but you look in the mirror and you ask, ‘If 60 is the new 40, how come I have to work so hard to look the part?”

Brian Johnson, the lead singer from AC/ DC, a fellow Sarasota resident and longtime friend of the Kelleys, not only supplied a quote for the front cover, but provided fodder for one of the book’s most colorful essays.

After devoting so much time to steering lovelorn women straight, Kelley says she’s was happy to write something a little more self-indulgent.

She’s earned it.

“I’m still fascinated by relationships,” Kelley says. “I still love listening to peoples’ stories. I just don’t want to write about them anymore. This time, I wrote for myself.”

Those of you who watched “Dancing With the Stars” two weeks ago probably saw ballet dancer José Manuel Carreño flexing his famous muscle in a segment from “Swan Lake” during the program’s first-ever classical week.

Carreño, 42, was recently in Sarasota spending Easter weekend with pal and former Sarasota Ballet Artistic Director Robert de Warren.

The longtime American Ballet Theatre principal participated in a sweltering morning photo shoot Saturday at the Sarasota Opera House with teenage dancers from Next Generation Ballet, in Tampa, and the Diane Partington Studio, in Ellenton.

Carreño groupies can expect to see a whole lot more of the Cuban heartthrob this summer.

“Black Swan” may have been the breakout ballet flick of the year, but that doesn’t mean all dancers are scrambling to see it.

Heidi Scherer, the 18-yearold ballerina cast as the lead in Revelle Academy’s “Swan Lake,” admits she’s avoided the film because it looks too freaky.

“My sister told me not to see it, and I was kind of like, ‘Uh, OK. I trust you,’” says Scherer, whose sister, Evelyn Squires, is the owner and artistic director of Revelle Academy.

Instead Scherer, a Sarasota resident, says she’s prepared for the roles by nailing the subtle and dramatic differences between Odette and Odile — the white and black swans.

No longer helmed by the plucky Brenda Terris, SSOS, which is currently run by its board of directors, unveiled its sixth season announcement April 15, at Allyn Gallup Contemporary Art. Titled “Under Azure Skies,” this season’s bayfront exhibit is a collection of sculptures

by Verina S. Tak Konstantinou Baxter, Chakaia John Henry Booker, John Clement, Isaac Duncan, John Henry, Terry Karpowicz, Peter Lundberg, Dennis Oppenheim, Albert Paley, Bret Price and Douglas Schatz.

No doubt a monumental lineup, (Henry’s 70-foot red “Star Pointer” was featured in SSOS’ 2009 show) the works were plucked from an exhibit that ran last year at the St. Urban Art Pavilion, in Lucerne, Switzerland.

For those of you who are fans of Henry’s work, the Tennessee-based sculptor currently has several pieces on display now through May 14, at Allyn Gallup.

“Working in a theater is like working on an island of misfit toys where everyone is welcomed and embraced, flaws and all,” Deborah Kerr says.

Faced with expanding the venue’s performance calendar, Turoff was looking for a fulltime box office worker to help grow GPAC into a full-fledged community theater.

Kerr was more than happy with the offer and quickly took on a host of other responsibilities; including leading the theater’s film committee and making the occasional cameo in GPAC productions. (Audiences may recognize Kerr as the prostitute from this season’s “Send Me No Flowers.”)

“I tend to be typecast as a floozy because I’m blonde, well-endowed and willing to do it,” Kerr laughs. “It’s OK. It’s all in good taste.”

Her voice and diction studies at SCF have also recently paid off.

Kerr landed her first narration gig last year reading science fiction and fantasy books for a local audio-books publishing house.

“I’ve always been comfortable with my voice,” Kerr says. “Well, except for today. Today I sound like an old man with a cold. My allergies are going haywire.”

Kerr rolls her eyes and explains that she and Turoff have a very brother/sister relationship.

“This is the perfect atmosphere for me,” she says. “Theater people don’t care if I burst into song or Muppet voice every now and then because they do, too.”

Muppet voice?

“Yeah,” Kerr says. “Shari Lewis’ ‘Lamb Chop’ started it, and Jim Henson’s Muppets clenched it.”

“One minute she’s professional, the next minute she’s a hot mess!”

During her first week on the job, she grabbed a stuffed elephant from the theater’s ice cream shop, nicknamed it “Fluffy, The GPAC Pachyderm” and performed an impromptu puppet show in Turoff’s tiny, windowless office.

“If something is funny, I can’t resist doing it,” says Kerr, who two years ago voiced a drunken puppet during the Glenridge Follies. “At one point, Ben put Fluffy up our website under ‘Meet the GPAC Team.’ When people would call for tickets, they’d ask about the elephant.”

It’s a good thing Deborah Kerr enjoys performing, because she’s far too entertaining for only backstage work.

Since getting hired four years ago as The Glenridge Performing Arts Center’s performance coordinator, Kerr has achieved celebrity status among GPAC regulars, not only for her deep voice on the other end of the ticket line, but for her uproarious puppetry and flair for playing call girls.

A 38-year-old native of Toronto, Kerr grew up playing piano and flute, singing in choirs and performing in high school plays.

Intimidated by the competitive nature of big-city auditions, she never considered pursuing a career as an actress in Toronto.

Instead, she spent her 20s working a variety of odd jobs, including a stint as a factory line worker at a hand lotion plant, where she found herself working the night shift, deliriously reenacting the famous chocolatewrapping scene from “I Love Lucy.”

“I could never figure out what I wanted to do,” Kerr says. “So I worked everywhere and did everything.”

She came in 1998 to Sarasota to help her parents run a small real-estate business and to study theater at State College of Florida (SCF) and, later, English at the University of South Florida.

After 11 years in real estate, she was ready to move on.

She originally applied for a job in GPAC’s sales department, but Manager Ben Turoff had other plans for Kerr when she walked in for the interview.

Lynn’s English Sherry Trifle Serves 10

2 pound cakes Strawberry preserves 1 15-ounce can fruit cocktail, drained 2 bags frozen mixed berries, drained 1 pint heavy whipping cream Bird’s custard (see note below) 1 cup (approximately) cream sherry (Harvey’s Bristol Cream if available) Slice cake about 1/4-inch thick; spread with jam and line the bottom and sides of a deep glass bowl. Soak cake with sherry.

Pour in fruit cocktail and cover with a layer of cake slices. Add berries and cover with custard. Just before serving, whip cream to peaks and spread it over the custard in a thick layer. Decorate with berries, cherries or anything else handy.

For the custard: Use Bird’s Custard Powder per the instructions, but triple the amount of custard and sugar powder to one pint of milk. You want it thick.

British by birth, Lynn Barrie has lived not only in England, but West Africa and Pakistan and Westport, Conn., all before moving to Sarasota some eight-and-a-half years ago. She has had great adventures every step along the way — some as grand in scale as summiting Mount Kilimanjaro a couple of years ago. And all that experience comes together in her personal style and in how she entertains. That is something she truly loves to do, and she does it in a way that is both glamorous and warm and friendly.

Barrie and her husband, Rich, frequently have company — “easily two or three times a month, plus smaller gatherings in between,” she says. She likes to set a stage for guests and for it to be different every time but always “exotic and out there.” To keep people moving around, Barrie sometimes serves different courses in different rooms.

She says she “loves to stage — presentation is the real fun.” It’s not unusual for her to light 100 candles and to match the staging of the party to the ethnicity of the food, for example serving on the coffee table and seating guests on cushions on the floor for her Moroccan chicken with couscous.

This signature dish is typical of how Barrie likes to entertain. She serves the couscous around the edges of a large dish and piles the mélange of chicken and root veggies high in the center. She has long ago given up preparing meals with lots of dishes and prefers “one big dish, casual and fun.” It might be a korma or Singapore curry or a great shrimp pasta with a homemade fresh tomato sauce.

There are exceptions to that policy, of course – among them Thanksgiving (“Oh my goodness, you should see it!” she exclaims) and Christmas. And then there is her annual Christmas tea party for her girlfriends, numbering around 70, for which she and her sisters prepare a huge array of typical

And things just got better from there. At the Saturday, April 16 event, themed “White Out Cancer,” there were more than 370 guests, a good percentage wearing white, packed into the Michael’s On East ballroom, also dressed in white.

Even before the final figures are in, the event has set a new record of more than $200,000 net.

The evening was a tribute to the late Cy Bispham, a longtime ACS supporter. Co-chairs were Jim and Bingo Wilson and Terri Klauber; Michael Klauber was the auctioneer.

Even the centerpieces were spectacular — clouds of gypsophila paniculata, created by Roger Capote, of The Naked Florist. And It was a happening party — Iris Starr, American Cancer Society director for leadership giving, reports, “I had to have Jonathan (Cortez, the emcee and DJ) stop playing so we could end it.”
