Longtime Colony Beach & Tennis Resort owner Dr. Murray “Murf” Klauber informed the Longboat Key Planning and Zoning Board Monday, May 13 that he has a contract pending for the penthouse hotel units and the Vagabond beach unit he owns.

There’s only one problem.

The potential buyer will not buy the units at 1620 Gulf of Mexico Drive until he or she has a letter from Planning, Zoning and Building Director Monica Simpson stating that the buyer is allowed to stay in the living quar-

ters unit for 365 days a year.

Simpson said she is not willing to issue the letter, because she has insufficient documentation from Klauber that states the penthouse living quarters he has owned for more than 40 years have always been his primary

residence.

Community center plans move forward After a three-hour meeting, the commission reached a compromise to explore possibilities for a new Bayfront Park recreational facility.

Longboat Key voters will most likely have the final say via a referendum vote about whether they want a community center at Bayfront Park. But whether that vote happens sooner — as early

as March — or later has yet to be determined.

The Longboat Key Town Commission reached a compromise at its May 13 meeting that would potentially extend community-

center discussions. They also voted to hire a design professional to combine a 2003 recreational facility design, done by architect Lisa Wannemacher, of Wannemacher Jensen Architects, with a 2009

Sarasota County park plan into a single project.

“I have a purchase in place for my home and my office and the unit (Vagabond) I own on the beach,” Klauber said. “I am going to lose this contract if I don’t get an answer from someone that the buyer can live there for 365 days a year. I am in a real jam here.”

Klauber told the planning board that he has lived at the Colony for 40 years.

“Now I can’t get the town to confirm that I’m legally allowed to do something I have been doing for more than 40 years,” Klauber said. “If I can’t get a simple letter, I will have to come in and sue the town again.”

Town Manager Bruce St. Denis told the planning board there are multiple zoning issues the town is trying to work through to get Klauber what he wants.

“It comes down to what’s allowed by the town’s code,” St. Denis said.

Simpson told the Longboat Observer after the meeting that she needs legal documentation from Klauber that goes back as far as he can provide to prove that the penthouse living quarters inside the hotel have been his primary residence the entire time.

When the town approved the Colony in 1972, Simpson said there was no tourism requirement in place that mandated that tourism units on a resort property must be used solely for tourism use.

“In that regard, Dr. Klauber’s residence became a legal non-conforming use in terms of being a primary residence,” Simpson said.

But Simpson said without chronological documentation in the form of homestead documentations and other documents that show he has always lived in that residence, she cannot produce a letter stating the property is still allowed to be lived in 365 days a year.

“If that property was not lived in full time at any time since 1972, it can no longer be used as a primary residence in the future, and it would revert to a tourism use under current town code,” Simpson

Bleu Claire extension denied The Longboat Key Planning and Zoning Board denied a request by the owner of the proposed Bleu Claire Condominium, 4765 Gulf of Mexico Drive, to request its fourth extension for issuance of a building permit for its proposed 11-unit condominium project.

Town planner Ric Hartman told the planning board at its Tuesday, May 17, regular meeting that economic and financial conditions couldn’t be considered under town code as the sole reason for approving an extension.

The planning board voted 8-0 to deny the extension. The Longboat Key Town Commission will have the final say on whether the extension, which would give the owner the right to hold off on obtaining permits until December 2013, will be granted. said. “It’s a matter of legal interpretation, and we all have the same goal of trying to continue to help Dr. Klauber with this as much as possible.”

Klauber, however, is upset that the letter can’t be produced immediately.

“This just isn’t American,” said Klauber, who is still working with Simpson to provide the necessary documents.

Simpson said a list of codes that have changed over the years must be reviewed and compared with the documentation Klauber can provide before the letter can possibly be issued.

Despite his plans to sell the units, Klauber, who still owns resort parcels on the property, said it’s still his goal to help restore the Colony, and he hopes to submit a renovation proposal to the unit owners, who are in the midst of sifting through a variety of plans presented to get the property performing as a tourism destination again.

The decision came after three hours of discussion, during which commissioners debated whether to follow the process needed to hold a referendum next spring or to focus on the idea of a community center, even if the focus would result in additional delays. At the May 26 Town Commission regular workshop, commissioners will discuss possible candidates for a citizens committee that will explore features that the community wants in a recreational facility.

Throughout the meeting, Mayor Jim Brown urged commissioners to focus on moving forward with the project rather than focus on a March vote.

Commissioner Pat Zunz echoed Brown’s sentiments.

“Part of what I see is revitalization,” she said. “I don’t think we should get hung up on the referenda for March.”

The discussion also focused on a range of topics about the proposed recreation center. Some commissioners questioned the price tag of just under $7 million in addition to $200,000 to $300,000 in annual maintenance costs.

Commissioner Phil Younger suggested that the project could be done at a lower

cost, pointing to Christ Church of Longboat Key, Presbyterian, which is in the process of completing a new 17,000-squarefoot building at an approximate cost of $3 million.

“I would say the proposal before us is a little ambitious,” Younger said.

“I’m afraid that the project will be killed by referendum because of financials,” Commissioner Jack Duncan said.

After Brown asked commissioners to focus on the project, Commissioner Lynn Larson said that residents need to know the scope of the project.

But Commissioner Hal Lenobel insisted that voters had already spoken about the community center when they voted against a 2003 proposal.

“In 2003, when voters soundly defeated the amendment, times were good,” Lenobel said. “Now, the economy is terrible, and I find that the citizens would react exactly the same or maybe even worse.”

Lenobel cast the sole vote against the directive to hire a design professional for the project plan and to move forward with community center talks.

Vice Mayor David Brenner said after the meeting that he was pleased with the compromise.

“It doesn’t do us any good if we’re just talking about what commissioners are interested in,” he said.

At the end of the meeting, Brown also expressed optimism.

“I think we’re moving in the right direction,” he said.

OPEN FOR DISCUSSION Was it a meeting or a workshop?

That was the question at least one commissioner asked before voting at Friday’s Longboat Key Town Commission meeting.

According to Town Manager Bruce St. Denis, the Friday, May 13, community center discussion was advertised as a workshop — typically a meeting reserved for a discussion in which votes

do not occur — but it was listed on the town’s website, longboatkey.org, and in commission packets as a meeting.

St. Denis said that the discrepancy should have been caught, but that the version posted at Town Hall and in commissioners’ packets takes precedence.

He also stressed that Friday’s vote did not involve the allocation of funds and gave staff general direction.

Firefighter pension issues debated Edward Siedle, the investigator the Firefighters Pension Board hired, said last week that there are problems with the board’s investment consultant. Morgan Stanley Smith Barney refuted the claims.

The Longboat Key Firefighters Pension Board must decide whether to take action against investment consultant Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, which pension investigator Edward Siedle targeted in his forensic investigation.

But at a special pension board meeting Friday, May 13, Morgan Stanley representatives refuted statements from Siedle, the president of Benchmark Financial Services, and the claims made in his report that state the company may have breached its contract with the pension board.

The main discovery of Siedle’s report, which was outlined in a preliminary report last month, refers to a $209,000 payment made to Morgan Stanley that Siedle doesn’t believe was properly disclosed and investigated in 2004, even though the pension board’s attorney, Robert Sugarman,

brought the matter up at that time.

Siedle made several recommendations regarding Morgan Stanley and said the board needs to determine whether Morgan Stanley is in compliance with its transaction agreements. He also said the board needs to amend its investment policy and appoint a compliance officer to regularly monitor the plan.

“A preliminary review revealed longstanding conflicts of interest involving the investment manager,” said Siedle, who said that his firm uncovered significant compliance issues related to services provided by the fund. “To determine losses to the fund, one would have to look at each and every trade (made by Morgan Stanley). You may have been in non-compliance for over a decade.”

Siedle noted that if Morgan Stanley vio-

lated its contract by making improper trades, then the pension board would be entitled to recoup the fees paid to Morgan Stanley.

Siedle said the pension board has paid approximately $560,000 to Morgan Stanley over the years for its services.

Siedle, however, did point out that his investigation found no fiduciary breaches made over the years by the actuaries, town officials or past and present pension board members.

Pension board member Gerald Feder, however, questioned whether there was anything to recoup.

“We can insist on documents and go through each and every transaction, but from what you have seen here, what’s the likelihood of there being large recoveries on the performance side?” Feder asked Siedle.

Siedle said he didn’t know.

“The issues are performance and compliance, with the compliance issue to me being the most disturbing,” Siedle said.

Morgan Stanley attorney Allison Patton, however, refuted Siedle’s report and his comments to the board.

“Frankly, we are troubled by Mr. Siedle’s actions,” said Patten, who said that there was no improper trading or improper commissions made by Morgan Stanley. Patten presented documents to the board to backup her claims.

At its quarterly pension meeting Wednesday, May 25, the board will discuss the report further and also hear from Sugarman, who was cited in Siedle’s report for possibly being a conflict of interest because his firm is already involved with a class action lawsuit involving Florida public funds.

Summer meetings could be on horizon The Longboat Key Planning and Zoning Board must decide whether it will hold meetings this summer to expedite Comprehensive Plan amendments.

The town of Longboat Key’s two most prominent bodies must decide whether to hold special meetings this summer — during a time when meetings are usually not held because many residents are gone — to expedite Comprehensive Plan amendments relating to the Longboat Key Club and Resort Islandside renovationand-expansion project.

The state’s Department of Community Affairs (DCA) is expected to respond to Longboat Key Comprehensive Plan amendments relating to the Islandside project by May 20.

DCA is expected to respond to the town’s submittal with its Objections, Recommendations and Comments (ORC) Report, which Longboat Key Planning, Zoning and Building Director Monica Simpson says marks the start of the adoption process.

In a May 13 memo, Simp-

son explained to planning board members that her staff is already addressing potential concerns by the DCA. The response to the DCA could be brought to the planning board for review at its 9 a.m. Tuesday, June 21 regular meeting.

But if the response cannot be completed in time for the June meeting, the planning board decided May 16 that it’s willing to hold special meetings in June, if necessary, to review the amendments. Now it’s up to the Longboat Key Town Commission to decide if it wants to hold meetings in July and August to review the amendments.

Simpson said the special meetings would not violate a town policy mandating that meetings regarding development and land-use applications not be held in July or August.

“If the town decides not to

proceed with public hearings in July and August, then the final adoption of the ordinance for the amendments would most likely occur at the Dec. 5 (Longboat Key Town Commission) regular meeting,” Simpson wrote in her memo.

She said that the commission would have to review the amendments at a workshop and at a first reading before the final adoption.

But if the town decides to hold public hearings this summer, the Town Commission could adopt the amendments as early as its 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12 regular meeting. That timeline would require the commission to hold a special meeting in August for first reading.

The amendments have been in the works since last year and are being drafted by the town to clarify the uses and densities allowed in the

future land-use categories of the Comp Plan.

The amendments come in response to the DCA’s ruling in October. DCA ruled that an ordinance amending parts of Longboat Key’s code — before the Town Commission approved the Islandside renovation-and-expansion project — was partly inconsistent.

DCA made the ruling after IPOC filed an administrative appeal in July that challenged the code changes the Town Commission approved in May 2010.

The town wants to clarify that those non-residential uses and densities are allowed by the plan and currently exist in town planned-unit developments. The town is also clarifying that planned developments allow for tourism uses and are setting standards for additional height allowances in planned developments.

St. Armands Circle is scheduled for an update that could enhance the appearance of the district while improving safety.

The St. Armands Capital Improvement Project is scheduled to begin July 1, according to Diana Corrigan, executive director of the St. Armands Circle Association. The project will install sidewalks along grassy medians, which will allow drivers to exit their cars and walk down the center of the median to the pedestrian crosswalks near the center of the Circle.

The feature addresses concerns expressed at traffic workshops about pedestrians exiting their vehicles and jaywalking, creating potential hazards.

The project will also add seating in the center of each median, along with Florida-friendly shade trees. The medians of each quadrant will have a different theme.

The project is estimated to cost $450,000 and has been in the works for more than a year through a partnership between the city of Sarasota and the St. Armands Business Improvement District (BID).

Corrigan expressed optimism about the planned project.

“Both for beauty and for safety, it’s going to be a fabulous thing,” she said.

The project is scheduled for completion in November. According to Corrigan, construction related to the project is expected to result in minimal disruptions.

St. Armands Circle Association Executive Director Diana Corrigan said that she has not yet received a schedule for light changes on the Circle.

The town is also performing rehabilitation work at a lift station located at 3335 Gulf of Mexico Drive.

The lift station rehabilitation is part of the town’s Capital Improvements Program and consists of upgrading pumps, relining the wetwell, replacing the main under Gulf of Mexico Drive and replacing a manhole. The work at the lift station should last until September. The project will not impact motorists.

+ Utility repair work begins on Broadway The Longboat Key Public Works Department started utility work on the north side of Broadway, between Gulf of Mexico Drive and Longboat Drive North, beginning Monday. The work will continue for approximately four to five weeks.

The utility work consists of excavation, wastewater-pipe replacement and roadway restoration. Broadway will be narrowed as a result of the work, and intermittent lane closures with flaggers may occur occasionally.

Sarasota County currently funds parks within the city limits, but due to its budget constraints, it plans to withdraw most of the money it had devoted to the city’s park operations.

Annually the county contributes $2.9 million to run city parks.

City commissioners approved May 16 a new 10-year parks agreement between the two government bodies.

The previous agreement expired last year.

Newly appointed Sarasota Mayor Suzanne Atwell, a Bird Key resident, says the citizens of Sarasota can look forward to a number of changes under her leadership.

Stan and Wendy are all grown up.

In past nesting seasons, the pair of swans was physically able to reproduce, but they weren’t mature enough to care for their offspring. They ignored their cygnets, sometimes chasing them away from feeding.

But it seems that the youngest pair of Harbour Links swans has grown up.

Wendy hatched four eggs April 28, three of which have survived, according to unofficial swan-keeper and Harbour Links resident David Novak. This season, Stan and Wendy have been attentive parents, teaching their hatchlings to feed. Novak said that the three cygnets looked like children splashing in the water as they learned from their parents.

“The three of them are having a frolicking good time,” Novak said.

But there’s sad news to report for the area’s oldest swan pair, Alan and Beverly. The pair began nesting in the Bayou Sound subdivision, according to resident Jane Matson, who reported that two cygnets from their nest hatched last week.

But one hatchling disappeared, and Matson witnessed Alan drown the second cygnet. Novak said that Alan’s actions are due to natural selection, when swans and other animals often kill their young if they detect any form of weakness.

“They’re going to secure the proliferation of the species,” Novak said.s The third swan pair, Henry and Vicki, didn’t produce any fertile eggs this season, according to Novak, although Vicki remained on her nest until last weekend.

As she began the process of abandoning the nest, Novak disposed of the eggs, which can attract predators.

But there’s always next season for these three pairs of swans — and possibly for a fourth pair. According to Novak, a group of three swans, two of which have paired, frequently fly into and out of the area. Next season, the pair could be mature enough to start breeding. And cygnets aren’t the only thing that could hatch when the pair goes into nesting mode: Once Novak sees that a pair of swans has mated and nested, he finally gives them names.

Punt the pension operation The evidence just keeps piling up that the town of Longboat Key should not be in the pension business.

On top of having among the largest unfunded liabilities among hundreds of pension funds in Florida, the business of overseeing a pension fund in the modern world is just too complicated for laymen. To put a fine point on it, the Longboat Key Firefighters Pension Board is out of its league.

Frankly, anyone not in the complex industry of investments would be.

This point became clearer than ever at a pension board meeting last week when a small phalanx of lawyers, brokers and financial experts explained in the most convincing fashion two opposing stories.

Edward Siedle, a forensic investment lawyer hired by the board’s majority firefighters, concluded that Morgan Stanley’s rate of return for the firefighters pension fund underperformed in comparison to two benchmarks; that Morgan Stanley was charging commissions when it was supposed to be fee-only; that it had a financial arrangement with the money managers of the fund that may have constituted a conflict of interest; and that it may have violated Florida law and that the investment firm was not forthcoming with information that Siedle had asked for in his investigation of

the fund’s operation.

Then Morgan Stanley lawyers took the floor and proceeded to demolish Siedle’s conclusions.

Allison Patton, executive director of Morgan Stanley’s Legal and Compliance Division, walked through a thick booklet of documentation refuting each of Siedle’s charges, pointing out that Morgan Stanley has had this confrontation with him with other funds that have resulted in litigation.

Her presentation was complicated and intricate, involving explanations of agency transactions, blotter code, alpha and beta indexes, agency cross-trading and principle trading, block trades, portfolio volatility, tracking codes, blended indexes and so on.

She was perhaps even more persuasive in saying the complete opposite of what Siedle concluded.

Pension board attorney Robert Sugarman was honest enough to say out loud what a lot of people were thinking: “When I heard what Ted (Siedle) said, he was very convincing.

When I heard what Miss Patton said, it was very convincing … This is really very specialized.”

Yes. And that is the pension lawyer. Imagine how the complex explanations were processed by a pension board made up of three firefighter representatives and two other

appointments — none being experts.

The meeting waded deep into the weeds of investment methodologies at Morgan Stanley and whether the town should be using a broker-affiliated fund manager, such as Morgan Stanley, or an independent fund manager.

But none of last week’s seminar on investing took the tiniest step toward rectifying the real and imminent problem: The pension fund is on the brink of insolvency. The causes are due largely to increased benefits for retired firefighters and partially due to poor fund performance in a bad market.

The pension board needs not to enter into any long-term contracts with Morgan Stanley or anyone else and send the bigger issue up the ladder. In the end, this is not a pension board issue, it is an issue for the Town Commission.

The elected body must get the town out of the pension business altogether. That requires the fund be made whole, which would mean issuing bonds, which connects with another Longboat issue — Bayfront Park and a new community center.

The Town Commission needs to move swiftly to determine what steps it needs to take to dissolve itself as the operator of a pension fund before the hole gets any deeper.

Turn off the TV. Quick!

TV and the rest of Digital Land that we use to watch videos are making us fat, lazy, dumb and horrible citizens.

The topic here is a departure from our normal focus on Longboat Key, regional and sometimes state issues. But our bet is we are speaking to the choir here; you’ll agree with our argument, which is …

The more TV you watch, the more you become fat, dumb, lazy, anti-social and indifferent to public affairs. The TV and its kindred brain-cell suckers in digital form could yet spell the wreck of our country. And it all starts with children.

Have your attention?

Good. Because unfortunately, I do not have the attention of most people who over-participate in the TV-watching slough ROD and yet manage to find THOMSON their way to a voting booth based on some mostly untrue commercial they blurrily saw the night before between CSI:Dubuque and The Biggest Loser:Us. Sometimes you just have to step back and look at TV-land fare and, slapping yourself in the forehead, say, “What the heck am I doing?” Alas, we don’t. We crank back the La-ZBoy, pop open a Mountain Dew and rip into the Cheetos. And, therein starts the decline of Western civilization.

Ridiculous overstatement? Read on.

Amazingly, TV watching continues to rise, even with the other forms of digital entertainment vying for slacker time. In 1950, 9% of households had TVs. Today, the average U.S. household actually has more TVs than people. Check out restaurants. You can hardly find a table where a TV is not trying to mesmerize you. Sporting events? Very big TVs. Shoot, you can’t pump gasoline sometimes without having a mini-TV going above the unleaded. The Neilsen Co. reports the average American watches more than five hours of TV every day — highest rate ever.

So, we spend a lot of time in front of TV. But so what?

It dulls our brain and trains it to mildew for long periods, requiring ever greater amounts of stimuli for entertainment. In 1953, the average length of a movie shot was 28 seconds.

In 1986, it fell to 7 seconds. Today, it is 2.5 seconds and falling. That’s because we need ever more stimulation to keep our ever-shrinking attention spans engaged. But the shorter the shot, the less we retain and our brain stops trying. When you don’t use muscles, they atrophy. Tons of research backs this.

And it all starts early. The Archive of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine published a rather stunning study last year on the effects of TV on toddlers.

“We found every additional hour of TV exposure among toddlers corresponded to a future decrease in classroom engagement and success at math, increased victimization by classmates, a more sedentary lifestyle, higher consumption of junk food and, ultimately, higher body mass index,” said lead author Linda S. Pagani, a psychosocial professor at the Université de Montréal.

That should wake parents up. Studies have found the same correlation among older children and adults, and add in more aggressive behavior, messed-up sleeping patterns and sharply reduced attention spans.

And obesity? Research suggests it is partly from the sedentary act of watching TV but also from how much more people eat during the zoning-out effect of TV. We get hypnotized and keep pushing in the Cheetos.

Does all this really matter for the future of our country?

Ben Berger, professor of political science at Swarthmore College and author of Attention Deficit Democracy, writes that “the overall data tell a clear story: TV-watching correlates negatively with social and community life.”

Further, he says, “Such citizens may be tempted to delegate increasing authority to a centralized administration. Inattentive and inwardly focused, having lost the habit and art of associating, they would be unlikely to notice the erosion of their freedom.”

The future of Western civilization, right there. This seems to be a piece of the puzzle explaining what, to some of us, is inexplicable: Why are so many Americans, who come from such a stock of independent pioneers, so willing to give away freedoms?

Well, with minds numbed and bodies made lethargic by TV, they don’t even see it happening. How can they be told that for every new rule, tax and giveaway from the

government they are losing another slice of freedom? How can they be told that they are sleepily letting slide what others purchased with blood?

They can’t. “Hey, be quiet, ‘Glee’ is on!”

It starts young, but continues throughout life, including for the college kids, with no dumbing-down bottom in sight.

AOL is re-doing CliffsNotes summaries of classics — which was bad enough as CliffsNotes — by turning the brief summaries into even shorter, funny videos. Dostoyevsky’s “Crime and Punishment” meets Beevis and Butthead for college credit. Wonderful.

Is there some policy prescription to save us from ourselves? No. There is absolutely nothing government can or should do. If you think there is, you have already watched too much.

This, like so many solutions, starts with parents. A TV in a child’s bedroom means a 56% average increase in brain-destroying, life-wasting TV time. This is not a plea for tossing out TVs entirely — although there may be merit to the idea. Nor is it even about content — even news and documentaries run ever-faster eye candy to keep audiences.

This is about drastic moderation. Full disclosure: I saved money for a year, and a few months ago, bought a flat-screen, hi-def TV, mostly for sports and sometimes movies. It is the only TV in the house and even with six children still at home, my wife and I decide when it is on and what is watched. It’s our TV. A couple of movies a week, a couple of sports games, maybe a news program. Studies don’t show that a moderate amounts of TV is a problem. But moderate is something on the order of an hour per day. Not five.

There is only one solution. Turn off the TV, put down the smart phone and pick up a book. Or newspaper. Or play ball in the yard. Or have friends over. Or volunteer somewhere. Just turn it off, for you and your children, and just maybe, for our country.

+ Energetic clergymen lead Key churches The Rev. Bruce Porter, of Christ Church of Longboat Key, Presbyterian, has recovered from shoulder surgery he had last November. He is back on the tennis court.

“I’m doing those overhead shots, too,” Porter reports.

And in other sports news, the Rev. David Danner, of All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church, used to be an avid runner. But an ankle issue developed, and now Danner is a swimmer.

He can be found at 5:30 a.m. six days a week, at the Bradenton YMCA pool.

“It’s already getting crowded then,” Danner reports of the early time.

+ Dog days of summer set in early on Longboat The final walk of the season for the Longboat Key group of Petit Basset Griffon Vendeens took place April 30, in Joan M. Durante Park. The PBGVs are friendly, French hunting hounds known for their playfulness and rambunctious behavior. Matisse and Vive la Femme live on Longboat Key and can’t wait for the friends to return in the fall.

+ Arbomar resident receives fond farewell party After 33 years in residence at the Arbomar, 87-year-old Olive “Rusty” Blackwell is moving on — but she won’t be going far. In April, friends at Arbomar honored her at a farewell party before her move to Plymouth Harbor. A retired professor with a doctorate in literature, Blackwell has had many interests.

Blackwell She belonged to the Audubon Society and traveled extensively.

An avid reader, Blackwell had a large book collection but was unable to take them all with her. A highlight of the party was a poem about her life written by Bill Baxter, an Arbomar owner.

+ Garden Club trip takes root at Hazeltine Nursery Members of the Longboat Key Garden Club made a field trip April 27, to the Hazeltine Nursery, in South Sarasota County. The nursery was started in the 1980s and has a wide variety of plants, shrubs and trees. Following their visit to the nursery, members ate lunch at Snook Haven on the Myakka River.

Police found a repair van in a condominium parking lot and discovered a repairman was on-site to repair a water heater.

A woman told police her speed on Gulf of Mexico Drive was ranging from 20 mph to 50 mph because she was lost and having trouble with her car. All fired up 12:50 p.m. — 500 block of Norton Street.

Fire. A woman reported a possible trash fire in the back of a homeowner’s yard. Upon arrival, police found a woman spraying water on what had been a fire consisting of yard clippings. She told police she missed her yard trash pickup day and decided to burn her grass clippings. But the fire got bigger than she expected, and she put it out with the hose. The Fire Rescue Department responded to confirm the fire was out, and the woman was warned of the town’s ordinance preventing open fires.

Tag and license confiscated 5:20 p.m. — 1600 block of GMD. Traffic Violation. Police pulled over a woman for driving in and out of the bicycle lane. The woman had a suspended driver’s license and was issued tickets for failing to pay traffic fines. Police took possession of the woman’s tag and her suspended driver’s license.

Her 21 simple exercise tools are designed for all ages and abilities; they are simple to do at home and are performed seated in a chair. Almost anyone can do them.

Ageless Grace is new; Medved started certifying instructors in January, smartly focusing on areas such as ours, where the program is particularly relevant.

Gail Condrick, known on the Key for her Nia classes at the Bayfront Park Recreation Center, is already teaching at the Aging in Paradise Resource Center at the Longboat Island Chapel. She also does workshops in communities that want a movement program in their own venue.

Condrick says that are three important differences in Ageless Grace. First, it is movement that can help both active adults and those with limited mobility, because it’s done in a chair.

She reports that active people are surprised by the amount of abdominal and core strength it takes to work in a chair, while those with limitations are pleased to discover how much they can do.

Suffice it to say that this kind of thing often produces laughter while activating different parts of the brain that don’t normally fire together.

Finally, Ageless Grace is a lifetime commitment but one that should be accessible to most.

The program specifies that you commit 10 minutes a day to your choice of three of its 21 tools “for

lifelong fitness and ease,” says Medved. Her mission is nothing short of changing the face of aging in America, and her belief is obviously that staying physically and mentally active on a consistent basis is going to do that.

Condrick stresses that Ageless Grace is easy and fun. It offers the opportunity to move in ways that are different from our usual routines. Most of us don’t realize how much we do things in the way we are accustomed to doing them. Unconsciously or not, we live and move in a rut of our own making — reaching for the same things the same way, getting in and out of the same vehicles, playing the same sports and doing the same exercises.

“It doesn’t have to be Ageless Grace,” Condrick says, “but it needs to be more than reading a book. Maybe it is taking a first tai-chi class. The point is always to be learning something new to challenge the body and the mind both.”

What you are doing is exercise as it is done in a new program called Ageless Grace. You flexed your spine, then extended it to lower and lift the trunk, and you took your shoulders through their range of motion on the frontal plane. Swinging the trunk left to right involved spinal rotation and core stability to keep your torso in place. Lifting those elephant feet activated the hip flexors and required planar and dorsal flexion of the foot. And making that sound certainly challenged the breathing apparatus.

Island Chapel supports educational endeavors

Kathryn White Stewart

Kathryn White Stewart, 93, of Hilton Head, S.C., and formerly of Longboat Key, died May 2.

Born Jan. 17, 1918, in Peoria, Ill., she grew up in Washington, D.C., and was one of the few women in her generation to obtain both a bachelor’s and master’s degree. While in graduate school, she met and married her first husband, Vincent Mckim “Mac” White, and the couple had three children.

The Longboat Island Chapel awarded scholarships to nine area students during the May 15 Sunday service. Scholarship Committee Chairwoman Judy Achre said academic standing and leadership were part of the criteria for selection. Majors of the students varied from sports management to communications and psychology. Recipients were Andrew Fortenberry, Miranda Gabrielson, Austin Gill, Rick Hummell, Kayla Jennis, Victoria Leonard, Dan Maiden, Mark Whitley and Kyle Aritt.

In 1949, the Whites moved to India, where they lived for 19 years.

The Whites were world travelers and also lived in Spain and Saudi Arabia for a short time. After Vincent White’s death in 1983, she married former Longboat Key Mayor Carleton Stewart, who died in 2009.

Mrs. Stewart is survived by her children, Lorenda Alice, Lynne Margaret and Vincent Mckim Jr.; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Row, row, row your boat Kayakers, scullers and even a paddleboarder took to the water Sunday, May 15, for the inaugural Longboat Key Challenge. After an evening of stormy weather, the weather cleared up just in time for the race. Although the previous evening’s weather did deter some participants from coming to the event, 20 competitors turned out for the the 5.6-mile race.

The racecourse began at the town boat ramp in the Village neighborhood and went around the south end of Sister Keys, to Tidy Island, to the north end of Jewfish

Race organizers had anticipated it would take two to two-anda-half hours.

Key and back to the town boat ramp. The competitors were broken into two different heats and left at different times with the faster vessels leaving first and slower vessels following after a few minutes.

The first competitor to finish was Petar Sibinkic, a former Olympian and owner of Your Fitness Instructor studio, on Longboat Key. Sibinkic had joked prior to the start of the race that he would finish within 50 minutes. But he was wrong. Off by two minutes, Sibinkic finished the course in 48 minutes.

All but one of the competitors completed the race.

One competitor injured her shoulder near the beginning of the race and was unable to complete the entire course.

Christopher Hanks, of Seffner, Fla., will teach in Guyane (French Guiana) and Tess Somerville, of Newport, R.I., will teach in Provence, France. Fifteen New College of Florida students have been awarded the coveted French Government Teaching Assistantships since 2000.

A Gulf-front home at 6477 Gulfside Road sold Wednesday, May 4, for $4.8 million, the highest amount paid for a Manatee County home on Longboat Key since March 2009.

According to the warranty deed, James Tipping and Jaroslaw Pekaruk, of Hamilton, Bermuda, purchased the home from Brian Withers and Thomas Withers, individually and as successor co-trustees of the Revocable Living Trust of Kathleen Withers, of Warren, Mich.

Barbara Ackerman, of Coldwell Banker’s Longboat Key office, listed the property. Reid Murphy, of Developers Realty Corp., represented the buyer.

The 5,982-square-foot home was built in 2002 and has six bedrooms, five-anda-half bathrooms and a swimming pool.

The sale topped the 29 transactions that occurred on Longboat, Lido, St. Armands and Bird keys during the week of May 2 through May 6, which had more sales activity than any other week year-to-date.

Sales broke down as follows: 21 on Longboat Key, four on Lido Key, three on Bird Key and one on St. Armands Key. Of the week’s sales, 10 exceeded $1 million.

Three notrump opening is a gamble It is true that I play a rather oldfashioned game of bridge. There are so many conventions out there that I find confusing, even sometimes worthless. New approaches come and go.

This hand is an example of a convention that I feel I can do without — the gambling three notrump opening bid. North’s opening bid of three notrump is typical of the convention.

It shows a solid seven-card minor suit and not more than one stopper outside the suit. South judged well that his had was suitable for a slam when

he bid six clubs, the suit he knew belonged to his partner.

As the cards lie, six of North’s clubs cannot be defeated. After the Jack of diamonds lead, most of the players who declared from the South hand found the contract was too much for them. The queen and king covered the opening lead, but the ace won it. Most declarers led a high heart, and when the queen dropped, they cashed a high club before leading a second heart. That would have worked had West held a single heart, but with the distribution, the contract went down

two tricks.

Actually, the hand can make even with the Jack of diamonds lead. Declarer wins the ace, cashes one high heart and then runs all of his clubs.

Declarer simply throws West in with a diamond. West is forced to lead a heart into declarer’s ace, 10, and he takes the last three tricks.

hen s/ART/q hosted its second T-shirt screen-printing party last fall, Brian Haverlock was there, quietly inking dozens of cotton shirts with

a pink sketch of a bunnyeared, stumpy-armed, mustachioed baby.

The design wasn’t the most popular T-shirt of the night, but it was among one of the most interesting.

It had a quiet peculiarity and a subtle freakishness.

What it lacked in mass appeal, it made up for in quirk appeal.

Haverlock seemed fine with that.

“I never considered them finished works,” Haverlock says of his postcard-sized collages. “And then I sold 20 of them at our State Street show.” starting point for painting, was thrilled to pair up with Haverlock for this exhibit.

“Brian has a range in his work,” Jaeger says. “On one hand he’s very tight and obsessive; photorealism to the nth degree. On the other hand he can be very loose and almost abstract or non-objective. The eye gets to play between these two varieties. It makes his work delicious to look at.”

To fully grasp Haverlock’s range, you must first study his cluttered studio — an extra bedroom plastered with magazine tear-outs, loopy sketches, stacks of art books and piles of 4-by-6-inch cards collaged with disembodied heads pasted on top of oddly proportionate bodies.

Most of Haverlock’s early works are tiny high-technical drawings rendered in graphite.

A handyman, he builds most of his frames using recycled wood. He says it gives his work a vintage finish, “an objectiveness.”

I’m busy exploring and experimenting.”

“We share a common language,” he says of Small. “There’s also a healthy sense of competition. We’ve learned not to apply to the same grants and galleries.”

Reaching for a wooden box titled “Seed of Ichthys,” Haverlock points to what looks like a sacred scarab beetle in the center plank.

It was once a dead cicada bug that he plucked from his windowsill and gilded to the front of his work.

During an open studio last summer, a little girl was so captivated by the little bug she reached out to touch it and squished the skeleton with her finger. So Haverlock replaced it with another windowsill insect.

“You know how it is when you’re a kid,” he says. “You want to touch everything.”

“I like juxtaposition,” Haverlock says. “I like blurring social norms with things that you might not expect.”

Like a baby with bunny ears, a moustache and missing hands?

“Exactly,” Haverlock says.

As an artist, Haverlock is influenced by iconography, theology, mythology and the musings of Joseph Campbell. He likes to work small; so small, in fact, that you have to put your nose up to his panels to appreciate all the details.

“Small-scale work invites contemplation,” he says. “There’s a sense of intimacy.

I like that people have to get up close to see it. It’s less confrontational that way.”

Haverlock could just as well be describing himself.

A 40-year-old, former Franciscan friar from North Dakota, he frequently refers to himself as a “draftsman,” which is a modest title given the artist has work hanging in corporate and private collections from Costa Rica to New York.

An adjunct professor at Ringling College of Art and Design, Haverlock holds a bachelor’s degree in painting from East Carolina University and a master’s degree in theology from Washington Theological Union, in Washington, D.C. If his name and work sound familiar, it’s because he’s a founding member of s/ ART/q, the Sarasota artists collective that launched three years ago as an exhibiting vehicle for contemporary artists who were left gallery-less when Greene Contemporary closed its doors in 2008.

This Saturday, he and s/ART/q President Tim Jaeger will collaborate on a joint show separate from the group’s usual large-scale exhibitions.

“Rough and Ready: The Work of Brian Haverlock and Tim Jaeger” will feature Jaeger’s and Haverlock’s drawings at various stages of completion.

The 42-year-old Canadian pianist, actor, playwright and composer arrived in Sarasota this week carrying the weight of two beloved Broadway stars on his shoulders.

Felder, who’s married to former Canadian Prime Minister Kim Campbell, has performed his oneman show, “George Gershwin Alone,” more than 2,750 times in 10 years.

Lucky for the Asolo Repertory Theatre, he recently introduced Bernstein into his solo repertoire —

a rotation that also includes Chopin and Beethoven, by the way.

“From an emotional standpoint and in terms of my own musical tastes, I’m closest to the style and sensitivity of Chopin,” Felder says. “What’s fun about creating these characters is that they are so unlike me. It’s great fun to bring them to life.”

Felder’s “George Gershwin Alone,” which opened May 18, at the Asolo Rep, runs through June 5. By special engagement, “MAESTRO: The Art of Leonard Bernstein” will run June 8 to June 12.

“There are a lot of connections with this show,” says JRA director Julie Rohr McHugh. “It’s just a super-colorful, high-energy, big, crazy show.”

Spoiler alert: If you’ve seen the musical, you’re probably already familiar with the muscleman scene. Look for local bodybuilder (and JRA dad) Jason Heckman as one of the fathers who drinks the magical “Yokumberry tonic” and sprouts Popeye-esque biceps.

The former curator of academic initiatives at Cornell Fine Arts Museum, at Rollins College, in Winter Park, McLendon, who was hired last year by Ringling, is the first modern and contemporary art curator the museum has seen in 15 years.

His arrival couldn’t come at a better time for the museum, which has garnered even more national attention, thanks to the Ringling International Arts Festival and its lineup of hot up-and-coming performing-arts acts.

“The museum understood that to stay relevant, you have to offer a broad range of art,” McLendon says. “It’s not that mod-

Now over a year in the making, “Beyond Bling” is McLendon’s biggest project to date.

The exhibit, which features the work of Gajin Fujita, Luis Gispert, Sofia Maldonado, Nadine Robinson, Mickalene Thomas, Hank Willis Thomas, Kehinde Wiley, Iona Rozeal Brown and Vince Fras-

er, also includes three performances May 19 to May 21 by Puremovement, a Philadelphia-based, hip-hop dance ensemble led by Rennie Harris, whom McLendon describes as a the “godfather of hip-hop choreography.”

The curator says he’s not worried that “Bling” will struggle to find an audience in Sarasota.

“I think one of the things that people will come to understand is that hip-hop culture is ubiquitous,” McLendon says. “Whether you know it or not, it informs all aspects of our lives. I mean, even the word ‘bling.’

Most people know what that means.”

For those who don’t know what that means, the museum has compiled a glossary of street vocabulary to serve as a reference manual for hip-hop neophytes.

“Some of our older patrons might not have Jay-Z on their iPods, but their grandchildren do,” McLendon says. “One of the things I’m hoping this show will do is spark intergenerational dialogue. I can’t think of anything better to come out of an exhibition.”

At first glance, Matthew McLendon seems like an unlikely catalyst for a hiphop-influenced art exhibit at The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. The museum’s 6-foot-4 associate curator of modern and contemporary art grew up in a small town outside of St. Augustine studying opera and piano.

A graduate of Florida State University, he received his bachelor’s degree in music and art history before heading off to England for his master’s degree and Ph.D. in art history at the University of London’s Courtauld Institute of Art. During that time, McLendon worked at the Tate Britain, a 114-year-old gallery that houses British art from the year 1500 to today. The experience solidified his decision to stop singing and pursue a career as an art curator, an occupation that McLendon, 34, says invigorates him and keeps his mind sharp.

None of this, however, explains the art aficionado’s unabashed love affair with hip-hop music.

“I am the hip-hop generation,” McLendon says. “I’ve not known the world without hip-hop. When I was a kid, those were the CDs I bought, the tapes I bought.

Growing up in rural North Florida, it really defined my view of the urban existence.

MTV was my world.”

“Beyond Bling: Voices of Hip-Hop in Art,” which opens this Saturday at the Ringling Museum, is McLendon’s love letter to a creative culture that rarely receives attention from art institutions.

It’s an exhibit that he says has been brewing in the “dark recesses” of his mind for years.
