The town will still count overtime and sick leave as a final pension payout in a fire contract that expires Sept. 30.

in height, which is what the planning board originally suggested in March. “What we envision is a height that won’t impact anyone,” Kenney said. “We want to work with the town and have open dialogue.” Former Mayor George Spoll also warned the planning board not to approve a Comp Plan amendment for Whitney Beach Plaza that allows for five stories over one level of parking. “If you want to start a war on this Key, go ahead and propose five stories,” said Spoll, speaking on behalf of the Longboat Key Revitalization Task Force of which he is chairman. “The north end sees itself in a par-
The town of Longboat Key and its firefighters have tentatively agreed upon a contract that expires in less than five months. At a contract negotiation session Tuesday, May 10, town labor attorney Reynolds Allen told the firefighters the town would not impose a mandate to not count vacation and sick leave as compensation when determining a final pension payout for retired employees. Even though the town has the right to impose that mandate, Town Manager Bruce St. Denis won’t impose it, because doing so would jeopardize the approximately $262,000 the town receives annually from the state to help fund its firefighter pension. “We discovered that if that were effectuated, it would cause the town to lose dollars that help pay for the plan,” Allen said at the meeting. “It would be detrimental to the town, the plan and the employees in the plan.” Allen told Longboat Key Fire District Union Vice President Brandon Desch and firefighter union attorney Jim Brantley that the town would continue to count vacation and sick leave as compensation, until the state changes its statutes or the town and firefighters can agree upon a future contract. “We are prepared to sign the contract today and present it to the Longboat Key Town Commission upon ratification by the union,” Allen said. Brantley, however, told St. Denis and Allen that he didn’t think the contract would be ratified unless the town agreed to one other item. Brantley suggested that firefighters already vested in the plan be al-

+ Poinciana bloom is sign of spring It seems as if the Key is always in bloom. Early spring brings the gold trees covered with bright yellow flowers. The oleanders that line Gulf of Mexico Drive are brilliant with a variety of pinks. Then, in late spring, it’s time for the royal poinciana trees with huge limbs covered with masses of flaming red blooms. They are found in all areas of the Key.

Brian Kenney’s vision for Whitney Beach Plaza is expanding. At a special meeting held Thursday, May 5, to discuss Comprehensive Plan amendments, Kenney, the owner of Boston-based Juliani Kenney Investment Capital LLC, announced his company, which purchased Whitney Beach Plaza in December for $3.7 million, is currently under contract to purchase the former bank building (now owned by PFG Asset Management LLC) at Kenney 6960 Gulf of Mexico Drive and property owned by Bill Saba that’s located just south of the bank building along Gulf of Mexico Drive. Kenney said he is also close to signing a contract to acquire the former Longbeach Chevron gas station, to complete his parcel acquisition trifecta and
expand his vision of Whitney Beach Plaza all the way north to Broadway. One possible redevelopment goal for Kenney is to attain the interest of a hotel developer. “There’s a huge void for hotel space here,” Kenney said. “The (plaza) site would be a good hotel site, but that’s not our main intention. It’s definitely not our desire to build a monstrosity that upsets the town and nearby residents.” Kenney, however, is contemplating whether it makes sense to build a retail center on the former bank building and the vacant gas station lot, while having a hotel on the Whitney Beach Plaza site that has access to the beach across Gulf of Mexico Drive. Kenney said his company does not intend to build anything that reaches five stories
