+ Members sign off on new building Excitement was in the air as members of Christ Church of Longboat Key, Presbyterian got their first look at the interior of their new sanctuary at 6400 Gulf of Mexico Drive. Following Palm Sunday services at their present location on Bay Isles Road, members boarded buses for the four-mile trip to the new sanctuary. Entering the church in small groups, all wore smiles and eagerly walked through each section. Members signed the wall at the front of the sanctuary to mark their visits. The main entrance to the church will lead into a welcome area with the sanctuary to the right and the fellowship hall to the left. Construction began in July, and a projected date for occupancy is August.

+ Cookie sales have sweet success Local Girl Scout troops reported the Longboat Key Publix was an unusually good spot for selling Girl Scout cookies this year. Some of the girls would stand outside of Publix for four hours in a weekend. And at least one customer bought two cases — 24 boxes. Now that’s a lot of cookies!

Revitalization realization A Sarasota County economic summit was held in January to discuss economic revitalization in the county’s towns and cities. Those in attendance stepped to the podium to give presentations on what their communities were doing to keep businesses and attract new ones. Everyone except Longboat Key. Former Longboat Key Mayor George Spoll attended the Jan. 19 meeting by himself, and Longboat Key was the only government entity present that had no PowerPoint presentation prepared about economic revitalization. In fact, Spoll gave a brief speech from his chair, explaining that Longboat had no specific, official steps it was taking to try and spur economic development or revitalization. Spoll, instead, listed projects and/or vacancies that were currently on the Key, using examples such as Whitney Beach Plaza and Avenue of the Flowers as developments that need revitalization. “We’re rather passive in our approach,” said Spoll at the January meeting. But that passive approach has done an about-face in the last three months. The meeting led Spoll to explore why the town of Longboat Key has no economic revitalization committee and why the

Murdered British men spent last days on Key James Cooper, 25, and James Kouzaris, 24, spent the last days of their lives on Longboat Key. The men, both of whom were British citizens and former University of Sheffield students, stayed with Cooper’s parents, who were renting a bayside unit at Whitney Beach condominium. The Cooper family has rented a Whitney Beach unit for a month for the past five or six

seasons, according to a neighbor who did not want to be identified. While here, the family celebrated Cooper’s birthday and bicycled through the area. The neighbor estimated that they arrived approximately one week before news of the April 16 murders in Newtown made headlines throughout the world. The neighbor, who briefly met

Cooper last week but did not meet Kouzaris, said that Cooper’s parents were acquaintances from past seasons. “They were delightful people,” she said. According to a Sarasota Police Department statement, officers responded to a 911 call at 3 a.m.
