Unconditional Surrender to call Patrick’s home A new tourist shop selling tchotchkes will move into the old Patrick’s Restaurant location and will focus on Unconditional Surrender. By Robin Roy | City Editor

+ Sarasota aims high to bring in sky ride Now that renovations at Bird Key Park are complete, it will become the host of a sky ride that will shuttle residents and tourists to, from and around St. Armands Circle, while at the same time providing a view of the city from up above. Construction is scheduled to begin April 1. Businesses interested in advertising on the buckets should contact TK.

+ ‘Seniorpalooza’ set to rock Payne Park The line-up includes The Temptations, Burt Bacharach, Tony Bennett, Frankie Valli and Kenny G. That could only mean one thing: “Seniorpalooza” is going to rock Sarasota. Sarasota’s inaugural “Seniorpalooza” will take place from noon Friday, April 1 through 10 p.m. Sunday, April 3, at Payne Park. All food vendors will offer an early-bird special starting at 4 p.m. each day. All seniors planning to attend the weekend-long extravaganza should arrive dressed in comfortable pajamas and bring a sleeping bag, shower cap, bedroom slippers and an extra blanket.

When Patrick’s Restaurant opens in its new location at Main Street and Lemon Avenue in a couple of months, it will leave behind its landmark home for the past 25 years. Dining at the Five Points location has been a longstanding tradition for so many Sarasotans. The owner of the restaurant property did not renew Patrick’s lease, because he wanted to build a huge hotel on that site. But with the city shooting down his hotel plans, he found a new tenant — one with ties to the city’s newest landmark, Unconditional Surrender. With its massive curved front window providing vistas to the heart of the city, the old Patrick’s building will be home to a tourist gift shop. “This is just what Sarasota needs,” said the county’s tourism head. “Every successful tourist town — from Englewood to Weeki Wachee — has a gift shop selling different kinds of trinkets.” Named “I (Heart) Sarasota,” the tourist shop will feature Sarasota-themed T-shirts, hats, pens, magnets, snow globes and more. But perhaps the most interesting feature will be its partnership with the Unconditional Surrender bayfront statue. “I (Heart) Sarasota” will provide a remote camera at the sculpture, where tourists can snap their own photos in front of the statue. “Why let someone do something for free, when we provide them with a much better service?” asked the gift shop’s new manager. When the camera takes a tourist’s photo, the image will be beamed to the shop, just like after the log ride at Disney World. The photo can be placed on mugs, shirts, mouse pads, even Snuggies. But, perhaps the most unique item will be an Unconditional Surrender pillow pet. “Children will adore them,” the

manager said. “My daughter has one, and she won’t sleep without it.” Sticking with the Unconditional Surrender theme, the shop will also sell nurse and sailor outfits. And to make sure Main Street strollers don’t walk by without stopping inside, a real-life Unconditional Surrender will stand just outside the front door. Sarasota Memorial Hospital will provide an off-duty nurse and a local Navy organization will provide a sailor, and the two will pose in front of the shop between the hours of 1 and 3 p.m. daily. Although the sculpture will dominate the shop’s wares, quite a few other iconic items will be featured. City Commissioner bobblehead dolls are sure to be a hit.

The ones of Mayor Kelly Kirschner, Vice Mayor Fredd Atkins and Commissioner Dick Clapp are expected to be expensive collectors’ items, because the three commissioners are leaving the commission in May. Mini Selby Gardens terrariums, which are scale replicas of the actual gardens, are one of the more unusual items. And kids will love the Greenspace Policy Committee game set, which allows them to add and take away greenspace on a tiny model of downtown Sarasota. “I (Heart) Sarasota” plans to open its doors in July.
