+ Students indulge in Pi Day activities Goldie Feldman Academy students were so excited to celebrate National Pi Day Monday, March 14, (the number “pi” is approximately equal to 3.14) that they rapped, danced, baked, made PowerPoint videos and hats and decorated T-shirts. Students also competed to see who would be named the 2011 Pi Day champ. After shattering her previous record of reciting 326 digits of pi, Sierra Van Such was named the official contest winner after reciting 1,266 digits from memory.

A new major arterial roadway is open and ready for business. The Honore Avenue extension from Palmer Ranch to State Road 681, in Nokomis, officially opened March 16, with a ribboncutting ceremony. “The road is a critical connector,” said County Commissioner
Jon Thaxton. But, unlike most large road projects in Sarasota County, the county did not pay for and construct this roadway. Palmer Ranch Holdings funded the $5.6 million, 2.5-mile project. Because a private company and not a local government hired the contractor, a lengthy public bidding process did not
take place. The company will be reimbursed through impact-fee credits. The extension, on which construction began in January 2010, winds from south of Central Sarasota Parkway, through Palmer Ranch and into State Road 681. “It was important to get (the extension) through now, because prices were low,” said Justin Pow-
ell, Palmer Ranch Holdings vice president. The roadway not only opens up 900 acres of Palmer Ranch property, but will also serve as an important north-south arterial connector, especially when there are backups or closures on I-75.

Candidates prepare for runoff City Commission candidates Willie Shaw and Linda Holland have two months to secure as many votes as possible to wrap up the District 1 race. By Robin Roy | City Editor
With two months to go before facing each other in a runoff election, District 1 City Commission candidates Willie Shaw and Linda Holland are gearing up for another round of campaigning. “I’m going to do what I need to do to make sure I’m victori-
ous in May,” said Holland. Shaw and Holland were the top-two vote-getters out of four District 1 candidates in the March 8 election. Shaw received 414 votes, and Holland got 218 votes. Although Holland won five of nine precincts, Shaw was never far behind in any one of them. However, Shaw dominated one
precinct in particular — Precinct 31, which is in North Sarasota, from 17th Street to Myrtle Street. He received 185 votes there to Holland’s three votes. Now Shaw and Holland are coming up with their strategies on how to claim the most votes in the May 20 runoff.
