Town center deemed priority The adoption of the Vision Plan has allowed the Planning and Zoning Board to help plan Longboat’s future in regard to the revitalization of its shopping centers. By Kurt Schultheis | City Editor
The town hopes future amendments to the Comprehensive Plan will help revitalize the island’s shopping centers and create a town center along Bay Isles Road. The Planning and Zoning
Board directed town special counsel attorney Nancy Stroud at its Tuesday, Feb. 15 regular meeting to report back with amendments that could make that happen. “Right now, we are a town without a town,” said Planning Board Chairwoman B.J. Webb.
The rest of the planning board agreed, but debated to what lengths the town would be willing to amend its Comprehensive Plan to spruce up the centers and create a better town. Stroud told the board that the town can assist in the revitalization process by making amend-
ments that could encourage the transformation of Avenue of the Flowers into a town center that stretched down Bay Isles Road and the revitalization of the aging Whitney Beach Plaza on the

Walgreens sets sights on plaza The drug-store chain has held quasi-judicial hearings with the town about the possibility of anchoring Whitney Beach Plaza. By Robin Hartill | Community Editor
Walgreens could be eyeing Whitney Beach Plaza, according to a quarterly report sent by Town Manager Bruce St. Denis to commissioners.
The Jan. 31 report states: “Quasi-judicial discussions have been held in regard to the development of Whitney Beach Plaza with the possibility of a Walgreens anchoring the site.” According to the report, the
Bank of America surplus parking site has also been identified as a potential Walgreens location. However, Planning, Zoning and Building Director Monica Simpson told the Planning and Zoning Board at its
