Home burglaries rise, total crime level falls Longboat Key saw an 84.6% increase in home burglaries from 2009 to 2010. Vehicle larcenies, however, decreased 64.6% in 2010. By Kurt Schultheis | City Editor
Recently released crime statistics for 2010 show that home burglaries on Longboat Key rose 84.6% in 2010 from a year ago. A rise in burglaries, especially in the Longbeach Village, was the primary reason Longboat Key Police Chief Al Hogle asked for and received
permission in 2009 to hire an additional patrol officer and a captain at a cost of $217,000. From May through October, six homes located north of Broadway in the Longbeach Village were burglarized. Firefighter lodges complaint A Longboat Key firefighter filed a complaint against five town officials Dec. 29, alleging that they interfered with the Firefighters Pension Board and stalled a forensic investigation of the pension plan. By Kurt Schultheis | City Editor
Longboat Key firefighter/paramedic Daniel Taylor further escalated a growing feud between the firefighters and town officials last month, by filing an ethics com-
plaint against commissioners and the town manager. The Dec. 29 complaint alleges that Mayor George Spoll and Commissioners David Brenner, Lynn Larson and Phillip Younger interfered with the Firefighters
Pension Board and stalled a forensic investigation of the pension plan that’s now under way. A separate ethics complaint was also filed against Town Manager Bruce St. Denis and Foster & Foster pension board actuaries
Brad Heinrich and Doug Lozen. Taylor claims the commissioners, the town manager and the actuaries listed were involved in a conflict of interest when the com-
