Members of the new Humane Society at Lakewood Ranch will have plenty of furry friends with them at the Lakewood Ranch Farmers Market this weekend.

+ Gecko’s event raises $3,000

Gecko’s Grill & Pub, in partnership with ABC 7, helped raise $3,000 for The Miracle League of Manasota during its monthlong Burgers and Buddies for Baseball promotion last month.

ABC personalities Scott Dennis, Lauren Dorsett, Bob Harrigan and Don Brennan designed four different hamburgers and donated $1 for each sold.

“We are ecstatic to have this kind of participation from our business partners and the local community,” says Bob Mitchell, Miracle League president.

Roadshow Comes to Sarasota!

The Roadshow encourages anyone planning a visit to take a minute and examine their jewelry box or their lock box at the bank and gather anything that’s gold. If a guest is not sure if something is gold, bring it anyway and the Roadshow staff will test it for free. Other gold items of interest include gold coins, gold ounces, gold proof sets and dental gold.

Other types of items Roadshow experts hope to see include old toys and train sets. Archie Davis, roadshow toy expert spoke about some of the top toys getting great offers. “Old tin windup toys from the late 1800’s through the 1960’s are in great demand now,” said Davis, “Especially those that are character related.

Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, the Flintstones or any character toys are sought. Old Buddy L toys from

the 1920’s to 1960’s are in demand.”

Basically any toys made before 1965 are wanted. Train sets made by Lionel, American Flyer, Marklin and others have the potential to fetch a large sum. Davis also stressed, “Toys with boxes and in mint condition bring sensational prices. Most of the toys that come to the Roadshow are not

in perfect shape but can still bring good prices from collectors.”

When expert Tom Fuller was asked what he enjoyed most about working at the Roadshow, he was quick to answer, “Old coins and paper currency. For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated with collecting coins. I would go

2. Vanessa Baugh. Most East

County residents know Baugh as the owner of Vanessa Fine Jewelry on Lakewood Ranch Main Street. But in 2011, you likely will begin to see a whole new side of the entrepreneur. Baugh is seriously considering challenging Manatee County Commissioner Donna Hayes for her District 5 seat in 2012. She will make her final decision sometime in the next few weeks. If she does announce her candidacy, she may be the first with enough connections and grassroots momentum to seriously challenge Hayes since she was elected in 2004.

3. Randy Bezet. In March 2010, Bayside Community Church Pastor Randy Bezet welcomed the East County community to his church’s new home — a 54,000-square-foot behemoth

on State Road 64. However, despite its size, Bayside already has reached capacity. Its four services attracted more than 3,800 attendees each week. However, rather than launch another campaign to expand, Bezet and his Bayside team are planning to open a campus in West Bradenton in February. In doing so, Bayside will become the first East County-based church to expand into another area.

4. Julie Aranibar. After unseat-

ing incumbent Jane Pfeilsticker on the Manatee County School Board, the longtime East County activist and school volunteer went right to work, attending her first meeting as a board member in November 2010. She brings a fresh perspective to the board and maintains that the district can trim its budget without compromising student education or cutting electives — all good news for East County parents.

5. Ken Sanborn. The Longboat

Key resident dazzled the East County with some silver screen magic when he opened Sanborn Studios LLC in Lakewood Ranch

last year. In May, the studio will begin filming its first TV series, “Miami 24/7,” throughout the area, bringing more than 100 jobs to the local market.

6. Greg Steube. Steube, who

replaced Ron Reagan as the District 67 representative in the Florida House of Representatives, is the only person to be named to our “people to watch” list for the second year in a row.

After a convincing victory last November, Steube is ready to put his platform into action.

7. Bobbi Larson. Larson will assume the top post for the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance, one of the East County’s most influential organizations. It’s a big role, for sure, but Larson is no stranger to leadership. As CEO of the American Red CrossManatee Chapter, she is responsible for overseeing services the Red Cross provides to the more than 33,000 people. And now, as alliance chair, Larson hopes to help bring new businesses to the East County while also creating opportunities for existing businesses to grow.

After spending 22 years as the rowing coordinator and facilities manager for the California State University Aquatics Center, Bob Whitford is bringing his expertise to the East County as Sarasota County’s new park manager, where he will oversee the implementation of a new worldclass rowing facility at Nathan Benderson Park.

In 2011, Whitford will oversee the completion of the first phase of the project, which includes dredging and relocating materials to lengthen the lake by a couple hundred meters while also providing room for a finish line, boathouse and additional parking.

“I’m looking forward to getting a chance to build an installation that will be a statement,” Whitford says.

“We have several courses in the

United States that are very good, but we don’t have a great course with a full permanent installation.

“You can consider this the Rose Bowl of rowing,” he says.

Once the rowing project is complete, Nathan Benderson Park will be home to a grandstand, finish tower, starting mast, docks and buoys on a permanent basis.

“We hope that this will not just be a destination for regattas but also a destination for training in the offseason as well,” Whitford

RAISED ON THE WATER

A native of Newport Beach, Calif., Whitford grew up on the water.

At 3 years old, Whitford learned how to sail, canoe and row a boat with his brothers, and by the time he was 8 years old, Whitford had learned how to drive a powerboat.

It was also during that time that Whitford was first introduced to rowing.

Whitford grew up on a C Scout base, an older form of boy scouts, near Orange Coast College. At the time, the college was in need of a coxswain, so members of the rowing team would come get Whitford and his brothers to help out.

“It was great,” Whitford says of the experience. “It’s a 60-foot-long boat, and you have to steer the boat and the athletes around bridges and yachts.”

Whitford began rowing for his high school rowing team, the Newport School Boys, which produced two Olympians and three National Team members while Whitford was there.

Whitford went on to Orange Coast College, where he rowed for two years before transferring to the University of California and rowed for another two years. During his

WHY HE MATTERS:

As Bob Whitford gazes out over the water at Nathan Benderson Park, a smile begins to spread across his face.

But it’s more than just the lake’s calm demeanor or the occasional sound of a bird breaking the silence that has captured Whitford’s attention. Rather, it’s the notion of what the area will soon become that has the southern California native beaming.

In just a few months, Whitford will begin overseeing the first phase of a project that will transform what had previously been a simple lake into a destination for world-class athletes.

“This will be a permanent installation for rowing,” Whitford says.

“I’m really excited to see Sarasota host a permanent rowing venue to attract athletes regionally, nationally and from around the world.

It’s truly going to be a destination regatta spot.”

In February, Whitford will assume the role of park manager for Sarasota County, where he will oversee the general maintenance of the park while bringing rowing and water activities to the park as well.

One of Whitford’s first tasks will be to work alongside the developer

Whitford continued coaching at California State University, Long Beach.

Two years later, he moved to the East Coast, where he coached Providence’s rowing team before serving as Stanford University’s varsity men’s rowing coach from 1980-1984.

Whitford then spent two years as the United States national team coach, serving as the singles scullers coach in 1986 and the doubles scullers coach in 1987.

In 1987, Whitford graduated from the University of California, Irvine with a social sciences degree. Whitford spent a year coaching at Santa Clara University before taking over as the rowing coordinator and facilities manager for the Sacramento State University Aquatics Center — a position he has held for the past 22 years.

“For me, it’s the teaching and seeing young people matriculate and mature (that I enjoy most),” Whitford says.

CARVING THE COURSE

Throughout his career, Whitford has been instrumental in planning and building some of the country’s most elite rowing facilities, including the sites for the 1984 and 1996 Summer Olympic Games, among numerous others, while working for Precision Racing, along with business partner Tim Royalty.

“We install the actual rowing course,” Whitford says. “We’ve done just about every major rowing course.”

Now, Whitford is looking forward to transforming Nathan Benderson Park into an elite rowing facility.

“I’m very excited about the collabo-

ration between Sarasota County and its citizens and the Nathan Benderson Corporation,” Whitford says. “They share a great vision, and this is one of the few places where a public-private partnership actually works.

“Paul Blackketter (of Benderson Development) has promoted Sarasota very well throughout the United States; and in my 22 years at Sacramento State, there has been nothing of this stature where I would leave,” he says. “This is the first thing in all those years that has enticed me to move. I’m very excited.”

FAMILY MAN

When he’s not hard at work, Whitford enjoys spending time with his girlfriend of five years, Lee Ann, and his two children Alexandra, 18, who swims for Stanford, and Broderick, 15, who is on his high school rowing team.

Like his father did with him and his brothers, Whitford introduced his son to the water at an early age, and like his father, Broderick Whitford also became enamored with rowing.

“I get to share a part of my life with him,” Bob Whitford says. “It could be software if I’d gotten into that, but instead it’s rowing. He’s been on boats all his life. He does better at understanding all of the aspects of rowing — the emotional and physical academics of rowing.”

In addition to rowing and spending time with his family, Whitford is also an avid fisherman.

“I love being on the water,” Whitford says. “This is why (I’m excited about) Sarasota. I feel like I’m in Newport Beach on steroids. There’s more water, more boats and more fish.”

Vanessa Baugh As a Lakewood Ranch businesswoman, Vanessa Baugh has held politics off at least an arm’s length.

But as she heads into the new year, Baugh admits public service may be in her future.

“I have been approached by numerous people in the community (to run for office), and I am looking at my options and discussing the issues with different leaders in the community and the community in general,” she says. “I like talking to people.”

Although Baugh has not announced any decision, she says she is considering a run for

the Manatee County Board of County Commissioners District 5 seat currently occupied by Donna Hayes.

The District 5 race won’t be determined until November 2012, but Baugh says she’ll have made her decision about running by the end of February.

“I have done more soulsearching about this over the last year than anything else,” Baugh says. “You have to ask yourself, ‘Why do I want to do this?’

“I own a small business,” she says. “I know what it’s like to have to meet payroll. I also know how important the deci-

sions are that are being made in the county and how important it is for the people to be heard.”

Baugh, who grew up in Virginia, is the youngest of three children. After high school, she studied business at Tidewater Community College but did not finish her degree.

“I had children instead,” she says with a smile.

She built a career in commercial printing — brochures, booklets, fliers and posters — and advertising before entering the jewelry business — “quite by accident” — after stopping at a

Gordon’s Jeweler’s store during her lunch hour one day.

After talking to a representative for a while, Baugh was offered a job.

“I thought about it for two or three days,” Baugh remembers.

Then, she called him back to accept the position, if it was still open, and agreed to start. In the first month there, she made more at part-time than she did full-time at her regular job.

Baugh and her husband, Don, opened Vanessa’s Jewelcrafters in Sarasota Square Mall when they moved to Sarasota in 1999.

Two years later, they moved the store to Southgate Mall and changed the name to Vanessa Fine Jewelry. The couple opened a second location on Lakewood Ranch Main Street in 2005 and closed the Southgate location a

few years later.

“We loved Lakewood Ranch, and the store was wonderful,” Baugh says.

LOCAL LEADER

Since moving her business to Lakewood Ranch, Baugh has planted roots deeply. She currently serves on the board of advisers for the Lakewood Ranch Community Fund, which distributes donor-allocated funds to local non-profits, and sits on the board of directors for both the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce and the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance.

“The community has been wonderful to us,” Baugh says.

“We love the community. We believe in the community. I feel like I can make a difference.”

VANESSA’S VISION

Baugh says moving forward, the board must focus on bringing new businesses to Manatee County, keeping existing businesses here and reducing unemployment, which was at nearly 12% in early December 2010.

“I see it every day,” Baugh says of the struggles of small businesses.

“I know a lot of people that have owned businesses, and they’ve gone under (and lost their homes to foreclosure). We’ve got to (get) our people back to work so we can stabilize (our community).”

Baugh says the board should look at potential tax abatement or other incentives for luring and keeping businesses in the county as well as how Port Manatee may be able to provide jobs. Manatee County also needs to diversify its economy rather than relying on the building and tourism industries for jobs and revenue.

“Our community needs to be

business friendly,” she says. “I know several of (the commissioners) really care and want to help.

And now, truly, they need to do something.

“I think that right now there is so much going on in the community,” she says. “It’s a very important time and we need strong leadership, and most importantly, the people in Manatee County need to be listened to by their commissioners. People feel like they’re not being heard.”

The feeling is one Baugh shares and is one of the reasons she is considering a run for the District 5 seat. Although voters did not approve Amendment 4, also dubbed Hometown Democracy, in November, the fact the provision made it to the ballot is evidence enough of the discontent constituents feel toward elected representatives at all levels, she says.

Baugh said November’s elections, which resulted in the replacement of two county commissioners — one by retirement (Ron Getman) and one by oust (Gwen Brown) — also shows the same discontent she feels with local and state leadership.

“I have sat back and watched what takes place, and it’s like a rerun on (television),” Baugh says.

“Change needs to come.”

WHY HE MATTERS: In March 2010, Bayside Community Church Pastor Randy Bezet welcomed the community to his church’s new home — a 54,000-squarefoot behemoth on State Road 64. Despite its size, Bayside already has reached capacity.

Rather than launch another campaign to expand, Bayside will open a campus in West Bradenton in February.

In doing so, it becomes the first East County-based church to expand into another area.

Just three weeks before Pastor Randy Bezet was set to preach Bayside Community Church’s first sermon in September 2002, he still had no idea where that service would take place.

After scouring the East County for a location, Bezet found Bashaw Elementary School. But Principal Minnie King originally wasn’t supportive of the idea of hosting a church in her school; she had had a negative experience with a similar partnership in the past.

“We needed to print postcards to advertise, and we didn’t even know where to tell people to go,” Bezet remembers.

But then, in what Bezet calls a “God moment,” Bashaw Head Custodian Rex Ballenger learned of Bayside’s situation. He and several teachers pleaded with King, who finally agreed.

“There was so much emphasis on that first service,” Bezet says.

“But we didn’t know if anyone was going to show up.”

Much to Bezet’s delight, 220 packed into Bashaw on Sept. 18, 2002, to hear that first sermon.

And now, just eight years later, Bayside has grown into one of the East County’s largest churches, attracting nearly 4,000 attendees

each week. The church moved into its permanent home, a 54,000-square-foot behemoth on State Road 64, in March, but already has outgrown its building.

On Feb. 13, Bezet and his Bayside team will again facilitate a launch — this time of a satellite campus at Bradenton Christian School in West Bradenton. In doing so, Bayside will become the first East County church to expand outside of the community.

For Bezet, innovation and creativity always have been critical to the Bayside ministry.

“I didn’t want Bayside to be just another church,” he says. “I wanted it to be different. And it isn’t just about what goes on inside these four walls (of the church). We wanted to be integrated into the community. We want to be making this a better community.”

THE DAY

Bezet was just 13 years old when he first considered ministry as a career.

“I had this vision of me doing ministry,” he says. “There was a multitude of people, and I was encouraging them, giving hope.

cal therapy and eventually took a job in outside medical sales. The job was perfect for the adventurous 20-something. Bezet spent long hours on the highway and used his innate charm to climb the company ladder.

He was successful.

But not fulfilled.

“It came time to make a decision with the company: Do I take a promotion?”

Bezet remembers. “It was at that moment that I had to ask, ‘What is the will of God?’ “That’s when I decided I had to quit running from what God showed me when I was 13,” he says.

The day was Jan. 30, 1992.

And at just 24 years old, Bezet made one of the most important decisions of his life.

INTO MINISTRY

There were miracles. Marriages were being restored.”

Originally from Baton Rouge, La., Bezet’s parents were Baptist.

Throughout his childhood, Bezet and his family attended several churches — some good, some bad.

The discrepancies discouraged Bezet, and by the time he enrolled at Louisiana State University, he had decided on another career path.

“I was running from God,” he says.

“I’m pleasantly frustrated,” Bezet says of his career thus far. “It’s just awesome how many people we’ve been able to help. But I’m frustrated because there still are so many people struggling.

“I don’t see other churches in the community as competition,” he says.

“Seventy-seven percent of people in Manatee and Sarasota don’t go to church, so there definitely is a need for more churches.”

Which is precisely why one of Bezet’s main goals for 2011 is to get Bayside’s West Bradenton campus open.

“Thirty percent of the people who come here (to the East County campus) are from out there,” he says. “We want to bring the church to them.”

And with 519 people on the launch team, the West Bradenton campus promises to be a success from the start.

Bezet says Bayside also will continue work in the Pride Park community in Sarasota. The church currently runs a weekly outreach ministry there and hopes to work toward building a community center to offer education, trade training and medical assistance to homeless residents.

Bringing those ministries into West Bradenton and Sarasota will allow for more growth at the East County campus, where Bezet’s focus will remain true to his original goal: building strong families.

“Bayside is a place where people can find a sense of family,” he says. “It’s a place to belong. It’s the way I always wanted church to be.”

When he returned to Florida, Bezet began searching the country for a place to plant a church. One day in February 2002, his search brought him to Bradenton. He pulled his car off Interstate 75 at State Road 70 and turned left. He reached River Club Boulevard just as Braden River Elementary and Braden River Middle students were leaving.

“I was out here before I even knew what ‘out east’ meant,” Bezet says.

“There were all these families out here — all these parents in their cars and golf carts waiting to pick up their kids.

At that ‘God moment,’ I felt the Lord prompting me.”

Seven months later, those 220 people sitting in Bashaw’s cafetorium confirmed there was work to be done in the East County.

After a year at Bashaw, Bayside moved to Freedom Elementary, where it remained for the next six-and-onehalf years. Bayside launched its building campaign, Living the Dream, in October 2006. By then, Bayside had ballooned to five services (two on Saturday and three on Sunday) with an average attendance of about 2,600.

“That was hundreds of man-hours,” Bezet says of the set-up and tear-down work required to operate in Freedom.

In addition to its services, Bayside made its presence felt in several unorthodox ways as well. Shortly after its 2002 launch, Bayside partnered with Walmart to purchase school supplies to donate to families in need. In 2004, the church was scheduled to celebrate its two-year anniversary with a birthday bash. But after Hurricane Charley rolled through, the church decided to donate all its celebration food to residents who sought refuge at the Freedom hurricane shelter. And several times throughout its stay at Freedom,

Julie Aranibar’s new seat on the Manatee County School Board won’t always be a comfortable one, but Aranibar, a longtime school volunteer and education advocate, isn’t one to shy away from hard decisions.

In fact, at just over 5 feet tall, Aranibar’s perch in the school board chambers is a blatant reminder of her yearlong campaign and the battles that are still to come.

“I have two pillows (underneath me) and can’t see and can’t reach the microphone,” Aranibar says with a chuckle. “It’s a reminder (that) as far as you think you’ve come, you’ve still got a long way to go.”

Aranibar beat out incumbent Jane Pfeilsticker in November’s general election for the District 3 Manatee County School Board seat with a 10,000-vote advantage.

Looking into the audience at her first meeting as a school board member in November, Aranibar was overwhelmed by the number of her supporters — most of whom had been with her campaign from the beginning — who attended as a show of support.

“It reminds me every day this seat isn’t my seat,” Aranibar says.

“It’s the seat that belongs to the district and supports our teachers and our students.”

WHY SHE MATTERS: Lakewood Ranch resident Julie Aranibar has more than a decade of volunteer work with Manatee County Public Schools. Now, she’ll be using that experience to affect policy as a member of the Manatee County School Board.

Aranibar says the district can trim the budget without compromising student education or cutting electives.

SUCCESS STORY

Growing up as a child on welfare in a poor neighborhood, Aranibar knows how important education can be.

She can pinpoint the exact moment when she decided to claw her way out of her surroundings. At 10, she was diagnosed with tuberculosis. The teacher who oversaw her education during her illness not only taught her reading, writing and arithmetic but also inspired her to create a better life for herself.

At 17 years old, Aranibar left home. Although she earned a scholarship to college, she needed parental consent to accept it because of her age. Neither her father nor mother would sign the paperwork.

“My father couldn’t read; my mother was on welfare,” Aranibar says. “They didn’t understand.

“When you live in poverty, you understand what it’s like not to have your basic needs met,” she says. “I just didn’t want what I saw.”

Aranibar forfeited her scholarship and worked her way through school over a 12-year period to become a researcher and molecular istologist.

Years later as a mother of two, Aranibar began volunteering in Manatee County schools in 1999 after she saw teachers exhibit-

ing the same enthusiasm for education as her mentor had. She’s chaired parent-teacher organizations, served on advisory boards and committees, raised money for schools and helped raise awareness on educational issues and funding for the school district since.

ARANIBAR IN ACTION

Aranibar says her volunteering experiences over the last decade have put her a step ahead of the curve. When she walked in to her first meeting with the district’s department heads in November, she knew them all by name and new how each department functioned.

Heading into the new year, she and other board members already were busy tackling issues in executive sessions, primarily working on three contracts that govern how

the district’s employees are paid, among other projects.

“It’s a great time of change,” Aranibar says. “We’ve done things a certain way for a long time.”

But moving forward, Aranibar says she remains focused on her top objective: better educating students while being financially responsible.

“My main concern was the fouryear consistent downtrend in our FCAT scores,” Aranibar says. “I don’t believe there was one thing responsible for that.”

Based on her own concerns and those raised by parents and teachers, Aranibar plans initially to focus her attention on two scheduling issues: First on block scheduling at the high school level, and second on the early dismissal for students on Wednesdays.

Similarly, Aranibar’s enthusiasm for addressing the district’s $644 million budget — and its $9 million shortfall — has never waivered.

She says tax dollars should be spent wisely and even lobbied against the district’s proposed critical-needs assessment millage increase, which failed a voter referendum in November. Superintendent Tim McGonegal said the increase, which would have generated about $6 million for the district, was necessary to keep elective and other programs available to students.

“Everyone is (struggling) with the fact (their income has shrunk),” Aranibar says, noting she sees several potential opportunities to trim the district’s spending. “There are some policies (from the private sector) we can implement that would really help the district financially.”

The Lakewood Ranch resident notes salaries and benefits account for 85% of the district’s operational budget. Additionally, the district’s roughly 6,000 employees have about 70,000 prescriptions filled annually, she says.

“Think about what that impact is,” Aranibar says. “You have to start looking at what benefits we can continue.

No one will be happy. That’s why you need a lot of information.”

structure and management policies as well as assigning specific dollar values to benefits and letting employees choose how to spend those dollars.

“Employees need to be educated on what these benefits are and what choices are available,” she says.

Aranibar already is dissecting the district’s last two budgets. Still, she says it’s critical the district’s budget committee begins meeting more frequently and much earlier in the budgeting process so feedback from its members can be incorporated into the budget, not just noted as an afterthought.

“You need to see it (earlier in the process),” she says. “It takes time to implement (what things can be done).”

Aranibar also says she’d like to see the district look into creating a vocational high school. Many of the area’s high schools already have academies, but does the district really have the money to fund such a concept? Aranibar says she doesn’t know, and having one vocational school for the district may prove to be a better investment for the district’s dollars and for students.

Bayshore High School already has empty student stations, and with Manatee Technical Institute soon vacating its Bradenton campus (when it opens its State Road 70/Caruso Road campus), the district will have land available. The old MTI building is in disrepair, but the infrastructure and other materials still may prove useful, Aranibar says.

Aranibar, as an active member of the Lakewood Ranch Kiwanis Club, aims to visit every school in the district by the end of her first year to visit with Kiwanis student leadership clubs — Key Club, Builders Club and K Kids.

“I want to go back to a conversation about those things and look at the data,” Aranibar says. “If our students can’t read in third grade, they are already behind for middle school.”

In midMay, Sanborn Studios LLC will begin filming the first 13 episodes of its first TV series, “Miami 24/7,” across Bradenton and Sarasota.

Growing up, the Longboat Key resident watched his father, Dan Sanborn, direct and produce films for communities across the state while also capturing breaking news footage for WFLA-TV in Tampa.

It was while he was out on assignment with his

father that Sanborn also learned the importance of precision.

“He had the recipe down,” Sanborn says. “The older cameras taught me to be very precise. He was never off. He always (said), ‘If you have action, you need to film it, and you need to know (how to do) it.’

“My father passed the business on to me to a cer-

tain extent,” he says.

With more than 40 years of experience in the film and TV production industry, Sanborn now is focusing his attention on his newest venture — the Lakewood Ranch-based Sanborn Studios LLC. Through his production company, Sanborn is hoping to create a facility that will allow other young peo-

In mid-May, Sanborn Studios will begin shooting “Miami 24/7.” The series, based partly on Sanborn’s life in New York, will be filmed predominately in Sarasota and Bradenton with about 90% of the footage shot locally. In addition, two or three scenes will be shot in Miami.

In its first year, Sanborn Studios is planning to shoot 13 episodes or onehalf of a season of “Miami 24/7.” Next year, Sanborn is hoping to shoot 22 episodes. Sanborn says it takes about five to six days to shoot an episode, but with a complete second

unit of actors and actresses in place to shoot the majority of the action scenes, Sanborn is optimistic that filming won’t take quite that long.

“We’re bringing in people with a lot of experience,” Sanborn says.

A newsroom studio and an apartment, among other scenes, were constructed at the studio’s 80,000-squarefoot facility in Lakewood Ranch. In addition, lighting and grip trucks, a green screen and light grids were added to the former warehouse space.

“I think Sarasota-Bradenton is one of the few communities in the area that embraces and supports the arts, theater and film,” Sanborn says. “This area is more arts friendly than anywhere in Florida.

“We have college students here from Ringling and the South College of Florida and high school students who are interns,” he says. “There are a great number of people here who are well versed in this type of industry; and it’s great to see so (much) interest in it.”

<<<<< father. At the time, there weren’t any TV news stations in Lakeland or Polk Counties, so with a background in production, Dan Sanborn would string for WFLA-TV or Channel 9 in Tampa.

And whenever Dan Sanborn went out to shoot a major breaking news story, he would bring his son along.

“I shot breaking news as a little boy,” Ken Sanborn says. “He would drag me along to help out and learn the business. I was 10 years old and shooting Channel 9’s film — they just didn’t know it.”

Over the years, Sanborn and his father worked on production projects together; and as his father got older, Dan Sanborn turned the TV news production side over to his son. Sanborn began shooting film while his father continued to do the voiceover.

“One day he (Dan Sanborn) says ‘I’m done. You’ve got to do it,’” Sanborn says. “Channel 8 didn’t know it was me. They still had my dad’s super up.”

In 1974, Sanborn began working for WFLA-TV, where he spent four years covering Polk County. He then continued at NGN 13 in New Jersey, but at the time, Sanborn had his sights set on working for ABC. A year later, Sanborn’s dream became a reality when he accepted a position with ABC. He worked for ABC for the next 12 years, spending the last five years working as a cameraman for “20/20” before leaving ABC in 1990 to focus on his aerial photography business.

In 1991, Sanborn decided to start manufacturing cameras of his own.

Within two years, he began producing gyrocams. In 2003, Sanborn started his own Sarasota-based company known as Gyrocam Systems. Three years later, Sanborn was awarded a

$43 million contract from the Pentagon to build and install stabilized camera systems for U.S. Marine vehicles. But over time, Sanborn realized he missed filmmaking; and in 2009, Sanborn decided to sell Gyrocam to Lockheed Martin.

BUILDING A LEGACY

Today, Sanborn’s focus has returned to his passion and he’s eager to begin filming his studio’s first TV series.

“I like the creativity of the film business,” Sanborn says. “Every day is different. I love growing the business and making something grow and foster.

It’s great to have a vision and actually be able to see it.

“I treat all of my projects like children,” he says. “You nurture them along and some need a little bit of a personal (touch). Some days, I think I’ve been doing this too long.”

When he’s not hard at work, Sanborn enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, boating and traveling.

Sanborn also planned to take up golf after selling Gyrocam, but he has yet to actually tee off.

“I bought a set of clubs,” Sanborn says. “I think they’re still at the Longboat Key Club, but I haven’t picked them up yet.”

But with a new business venture and plans for more TV and film productions in the future, Sanborn admits it’s hard to think about taking time off.

“It’s really important to me to leave a legacy for my kids,” Sanborn says. “I want to (build) a facility that creates entertainment programming for TV. That’s my primary purpose. This business is all based on contacts and relationships.”

WHY HE MATTERS:

After more than two years of campaigning, 32-year-old Greg Steube finally can put his ideas into action as the District 67 representative in the Florida House of Representatives. Steube is the only person to make The East County Observer’s annual “people to watch” list for the second year in a row.

Greg Steube admits the last few months have been a whirlwind.

After winning a seat in the Florida House of Representatives on Nov. 2, the 32-year-old has been busy juggling his new responsibilities with his work as an attorney.

“It’s been great to be able to transition into what you are campaigning for,” he says. “I made a point (when I visited Tallahassee) not to walk on the House floor until I was elected. It’s truly an honor to be one of the few people in the state to represent somebody.”

Steube attended a new-member orientation in Tallahassee Nov. 9-10 and a special session a week later. There, he took an oath of office and quickly set to work, voting on eight bills in two days. On Dec. 17, Steube was assigned to serve on the judiciary committee as well as the energy and utilities subcommittee, the health care appropriations subcommittee and the select committee on water policy.

“I am truly honored that the Speaker has assigned me to committees that are significant areas of concern for our state, such as healthcare appropriations, energy and utilities and water policy,”

Steube said. “I greatly look forward to serving on those committees and moving our state in a positive direction.”

HOME-GROWN

Son of Manatee County Sheriff Brad Steube and his wife, Debbie, Greg Steube moved to the East County in the sixth grade. With virtually nothing but land for cattle grazing east of Interstate 75, the young Steube quickly realized his desire to work in the cattle industry through his work with the FFA and 4-H organizations.

His interest in politics developed in high school, but Steube didn’t step into the political arena until 2000 as a student at the University of Florida, where he was earning a degree in animal science with a minor in agricultural law. There, he piloted an internship program, working as a legislative assistant with the Legislature through the school’s agricultural department.

After graduating, Steube entered the law school at the University of Florida’s Levin College of Law. He also joined the U.S. Army, spending one year in the infantry and three years in the Army JAG

Corps. in response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

After returning from active duty, Steube realized it was time to pursue his dream as well as his belief that the most direct way to influence people’s lives was through good policy. He began his campaign to replace Rep. Ron Reagan, who soon would reach his term limit as District 67 representative.

As an attorney with Najmy Thompson, Steube now is learning how to juggle his career — and assuring his clients he can will still have time to handle their cases — with a sometimes grueling travel schedule and his other legislative responsibilities.

The task, Steube admits, has

been more difficult than he anticipated but one he’s already working hard to get his hands around.

“We’ll see how this session plays out and kind of go from there,” Steube says.

TEST IN TALLAHASSEE

In just his first two weeks in office, Steube already was receiving e-mails and other messages from constituents about a law that passed last session. The law required an inspection of septic tanks every five years, but constituents said the requirement was unnecessary and would be costly, particularly for those individuals owning multiple properties with septic systems, Steube said.

“You are not going to see the leadership raise taxes to meet the financial restraints,” Steube says.

District 67, the largest in the state with the most registered voters, may be one of the districts most affected by reapportionment. Steube’s seat currently serves sections of Hillsborough, Manatee and Sarasota counties.

“I think you’ll see a dramatic change in (this district) because of the growth,” he says. “It’ll be interesting to see how all this works out.”

MAN WITH THE PLAN

Steube says he has several ideas in mind about potential bills to sponsor but will keep his options open until later in the process. Each legislator only is allowed to be the primary sponsor for six bills, although each can co-sponsor as many as he or she likes.

At the top of Steube’s list is finding ways to make regulations less burdensome to small businesses, decreasing taxes on small businesses and looking at policies regarding intangible taxes — assets like tractors and property on a farm that are taxed.

“It’s very rewarding to have the opportunity to author a bill and affect good policy,” Steube says. “I definitely want to do some bills related to smallbusiness growth and economic development.”

Another option Steube is considering is a bill to close the loophole allowing pill mills, a term used for facilities that improperly prescribe pain medication and other prescription narcotics. He’s also interested in authoring legislation pertaining to agriculture and veterans.

Steube and fellow legislators passed a provision to make the law effective in July, rather than January, so they could take more time to look at its financial impacts on constituents.

“I just think, especially during this time, regulating something like a septic tank — I don’t really see how that’s the government’s prerogative to make people pay to have their septic tanks (tested),” he says.

Steube again headed to Tallahassee in early December and will spend several more weeks there before the Legislative session starts in March.

There’s still much to learn about the legislative process and becoming an effective legislator, but the freshman representative says he hopes his experiences and relationships with other legislators, such as former Rep. Ron Reagan and current representatives Will Weatherford and Dean Cannon, will make the transition smoother.

“I want to do as much as I can,” Steube says. “Having those relationships certainly helps your ability to communicate.”

Steube says he believes the Legislature may hold several special sessions and will be tackling some challenging issues over the coming year, including the “exponential growth” of Medicare, the state’s budget deficit and even reapportionment of districts, among others.

“I think you’ll see another bill in regard to Medicaid this coming season,” he says. “Any policy we can make for a free market approach would be great.

We’re going to have to find something to lessen the burden on taxpayers.

ObamaCare placed an inordinate burden on the state.”

As CEO, Larson is responsible for overseeing and managing the emergency assistance and training programs and services the Red Cross provides to the more than 33,000 people living in both Manatee and Hardee counties. “(Knowing) your involvement directly impacts something bigger than we are is exciting,” Larson says. “I like that it’s a little bit different every day. I really love working here at the Red Cross and the fact that I get to interact with almost everyone in the community.

“I guess that’s sort of a big statement, but we have clients, donors, volunteers and corporate partners; and I love (having) all of these community contacts and working with everyone to (support) the Red Cross’ mission.”

Aside from providing disaster relief and training, the Red Cross provides a number of health and safety programs, including CPR, First Aid and lifeguard and babysitter training, among numerous others.

“I love our health and safety programs because they are all about teaching people to live safer and healthier lives,” Larson says.

“These are really important skills that every person in the community should have.”

REACHING OUT

But for Larson, community involvement isn’t simply limited to the workplace. For the past four years, Larson has been a member of the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance.

Shortly after the Red Cross opened its Lakewood Ranch office, Larson was approached by Tim Martin, then the organization’s chairman, about getting involved in the alliance. Larson did

just that, hoping to garner recognition for the Red Cross and other non-profit organizations within the Lakewood Ranch community.

“When we opened our office here in Lakewood Ranch, we definitely wanted to take an active role in the Lakewood Ranch community,” Larson says. “At the time, the organization was still relatively new.”

This year, Larson will begin serving her third year on the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance’s Board of Directors — this time as the organization’s chairman. Larson assumes her new position this month.

Four years ago, Bobbi Larson joined the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance as a way to bring recognition to the American Red Cross-Manatee Chapter, which recently had opened a new office in Lakewood Ranch.

This month, the American Red Cross-Manatee Chapter CEO will begin serving her third year on the alliance’s board of directors — this time as chairman.

WHY SHE MATTERS:

At this time 12 years ago, Bobbi Larson had no idea what she wanted to be.

But that all changed in the spring of 1999 when she stumbled upon Leadership Manatee. Larson applied for the program and was selected as one of the members of the Class of 2000. While enrolled in Leadership Manatee, Larson discovered several non-profit organizations. And it was while touring those organizations that Larson discovered her true calling.

“I knew I wanted to stay (in Florida), but I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do,” Larson says.

“Leadership Manatee gave me the opportunity to really see what the community had to offer and where I fit in. You saw all of the best that the community has to offer, but you did get the opportunity to see areas where we need to improve.

“That’s probably why I decided to work for a non-profit,” she says.

“There were so many needs out there, and I just fell in love with the idea of working for a non-profit. I loved the Red Cross’ mission and idea of seeing a problem and being part of the solution.”

When sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not hard at work, Larson enjoys spending time with her two daughters Kelsey, 23, who lives in Georgia, and Kerri, 21, who attends Florida State University. Additionally, Larson enjoys traveling, attending community events, such as Music on Main, spending time with her friends and watching cooking shows. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Every now and then, I think Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m an Iron Chef,â&#x20AC;? Larson says with a laugh. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I give it my best shot, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not the same as on TV. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fun to try though.â&#x20AC;?

A native of Norcross, Ga., Larson always has been intrigued by how businesses interact within the local community. Larson received a business degree from Methodist University in Fayettville, N.C. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I like business,â&#x20AC;? Larson says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Although I feel that if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to be involved in an organization, you need to be actively involved. Otherwise, you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get all of the benefits.â&#x20AC;?

Larson earned the allianceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top post through a nomination by other members and the board. At first, the suggestion surprised Larson. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I (thought), â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Is this the best option you have, and are you sure?â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? Larson says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My gut reaction (says) you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t usually see people involved in non-profits running a business organization.â&#x20AC;?

A home in the County Club of Lakewood Ranch tops the transactions in this week’s real estate. Daryl and Nancy Brown, Sarasota, sold their home at 6915 Westchester Circle to Brian and Ailish Murphy, Lakewood Ranch, for $950,000. Built in 2003, it has five bedrooms, five-and-one-half baths, a pool and 5,775 square feet of living area. It sold for $1,775,000 in 2005.

Ronald and Shirley Coleman of Lowden, Tenn., sold their home at 19211 63rd Ave. E. to John and Kathleen Hargiss, Bradenton, for $649,000. Built in 2002, it has three bedrooms, three-and-one-half baths, a pool and 3,669 square feet of living area.

It previously sold for $256,000 in 2008.
