+ Residents celebrate Seaplace love story After meeting and falling in love years ago at Seaplace, Dick Antonello and Sue Hoeft will marry on New Year’s Eve, at St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church. But the couple got an early celebration at Seaplace’s welcome-back party Dec. 15, when neighbors were abuzz with excitement about the long-time couple’s plans to tie the knot.

+ Cannons receives fifth DEP award Cannons Marina was named a Florida Clean Boatyard and Clean Marina for the fifth consecutive year by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and The Clean Boating Partnership.

Cannons was among the first dealerships and marinas in the Southwest District to receive the designations and the first in Manatee County to earn the double designation.

The Florida Clean Marina and Clean Boatyard program is a voluntary designation program in which facilities implement a set of environmental Best Management Practices (BMPs) designed to protect Florida’s waterways.

Phillip Matthews, Martin Bobzien, organizer of the Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key bell ringers, Edith Barr Dunn and Publix Manager Andy Lappin tallied the final amount of money raised last season at the Longboat Key Publix — $11,035. 2. Dr. Eugenie Clark autographed a copy of the new edition of her book, “The Lady and the Sharks,” at Mote’s “Books with Bite” event in February. 3. Brisk winds and a chilly water temperature didn’t deter 13-month-old Jordan Atkins, who splashed in the Gulf of Mexico surf in January. 4. Lynne Hayden and Gail Wyer enjoyed an authentic Cajun dinner in February at Longboat Island Chapel’s Mardi Gras celebration. 5. INBRIEF + Code hearing dates set for May A Tallahassee-based administrative law judge has scheduled May 3 through May 6 as hearing dates regarding an ordinance that amended parts of Longboat Key’s code.

On Oct. 20, the state’s Department of Community Affairs (DCA) ruled that an ordinance amending parts of Longboat Key’s code is both consistent and inconsistent.

Town attorney David Persson asked Judge Bram Canter to postpone the hearings while the town works to make amendments to the codes it changed, to further clarify its position with the state

and avoid the administrative process that’s looming.

The Islandside Property Owners Coalition (IPOC) filed an administrative appeal July 14 challenging code changes approved by the Town Commission that benefit the approval of the Longboat Key Club’s Islandside renovation-andexpansion project.

A household/hazardous-waste collection for barrier-island residents will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at the Coquina Beach bayside parking access area on Anna Maria Island.

Residents can take advantage of the collection to dispose of solvents and chemicals, batteries and technology equipment such as televisions and computers.

Boom times to Ray Arpke means his restaurant, especially the second-floor bar/ dessert area, is so packed he must walk around the outside to get from one end to the other.

That’s how things were in the early 1990s at Euphemia Haye, the prominent eatery Arpke has owned with his wife, D’Arcy Arpke, since 1980. Those were the restaurant’s heydays, says Arpke.

The recession, however, hit Euphemia Haye hard, much like it did the entire high-end restaurant community in the Sarasota-Bradenton area. Several wellknown spots closed, while others changed themes and menus.

But Arpke, for a few nights in early December, found himself in a time machine: Euphemia Haye was so busy he again used a back stairwell to get around the building.

That, coupled with a 7% increase in sales in October and November over 2009, has the Arpkes hoping the worst of the recession could be over.

More proof: Customers are buying expensive drinks again, says Arpke, like Dom Pérignon and Opus wine.

“People seem to be back to spending money,” says D’Arcy Arpke, who considers the recent uptick “frugal fatigue.” “People are maybe beginning to enjoy life again.”

Managers and owners of new restaurants could look to the Arpkes for a how-to guide on restaurant survival strategy. First, Euphemia Haye, with 54 employees, treats every season like the restaurant is brand-

For D’Arcy Arpke, who handles the business side of the restaurant, that means balancing the line between saving and spending. For the 2010-2011 season, the Arpkes leaned toward the latter. The restaurant spent nearly $100,000 on infrastructure projects, including a $30,000 refrigerator and a renovation of the front of the building. They also increased the advertising budget.

The Arpkes, restaurant lifers who met in the 1970s when they both worked at The Colony Beach & Tennis Resort, persevered with Euphemia Haye through several economic downturns.

“The shifts got a little longer,” Arpke says of owning his own place, “but at least I was working for myself.”

To sum up 2010 for the agents at Michael Saunders & Company is as easy as borrowing the song lyric immortalized by Frank Sinatra back in 1966. “It was a very good year.”

Mind you, not the best year ever in terms of total dollar volume; but perhaps one of the most satisfying, given today’s extremely harsh economy combined with the challenges of what is perhaps the toughest real estate markets in the region’s history. Needlessto-say, we are in awe of how well our agents played the extremely difficult hand they were dealt in 2010. “Humbled” might be the better word, as their considerable efforts on behalf of their clients and customers not only exceeded ambitious companywide goals set this time last year, but also vastly outperformed the market in general.

A review of all year-to-date residential sales throughout Sarasota, Manatee and Charlotte Counties—based on an actual accounting by the Mid-Florida Regional MLS—reveals a slight overall improvement for the tri-county region versus 2009. Unit sales through mid-December were up 3%; while dollar volume was up .5%. Not at all bad considering the number of distressed properties that weighed heavily on the market throughout the year, to say nothing of the expected lull in sales that followed the end of a popular housing tax credit.

A Very Good Year

For the identical period, unit sales at Michael Saunders & Company are up 30.3% versus 2009. Dollar volume is up as well, by 23.1%. Moreover, of the $3.528.1 billion in volume sold through mid-December by all agents in the three county region, the agents of Michael Saunders & Company were responsible for a 38% share of it, or $1.340 billion. And the year isn’t over yet. A substantial number of transactions, representing tens of millions of dollars in additional volume, are expected to close by year’s end.

So let this be the first thank-you note of 2011; a New Year’s message to all our clients and customers who made this level of performance for our agents possible. Thank you for a very good year and for the opportunity to prove why we believe so strongly in our agents. This year, their average closed volume per agent through November was more than $2.5 million, an increase of 17.2% over last year.

We add a second heartfelt thanks to our 550-plus agents for the level of performance, cooperation and camaraderie that resulted in their ability to find buyers for our own listings and provide service to both sides of our transactions 42.3 % of the time.

So, I will try again this year.

But, I am adding another this year. With two active teenagers I keep busy, but I am making a resolution to try to set aside a little bit of personal time for myself.

I am a Republican, and this year I am going to really spend more time and effort to help the party. Also I want to donate more of my time to help those in need.

Ben Rothschild has only been playing tennis for a little more than a year, but he is already a big fan of the sport. Ben, from Washington, D.C., visits his grandparents, Steve and Marilyn Rothschild, on Longboat Key two to three times a year. When he visits, he takes lessons from Dave Sparks at the Longboat Key Public Tennis Center and also hits the ball around with his grandfather.

Ben, 6 3/4, says that his sister was a big influence on his decision to start playing so young, because his sister plays for her high school varsity tennis team. She told him the earlier he started, the better he would be when he was older.

“I can hit the tennis ball pretty well,” says Ben.

The Sandpipers Club at All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church had a highflying guest Tuesday, Dec. 14, when Rick Piccolo, chief executive officer of Sarasota Bradenton International Airport, attended its meeting.

Piccolo joined the Sandpipers for lunch before heading over to the chapel, where he held a presentation, which was open to the entire congregation.

Piccolo discussed everything from the financial aspects of running an airport to airport security. After his presentation, he took questions from the audience.

New Year’s outlook: The U.S. is bankrupt eral government and a disbursement of unConstitutional centralized powers.

Government spending accounts for more than 40% of GDP, and although that sounds great, the problem with government is that it produces nothing that lasts and goes back into the economy to aid future growth. Government takes and spends and has produced nothing in this country in the last 50 years but more debt and war.

Here are some historical examples of governments that have behaved like ours.

• In 1763, after the Seven Years War with France, King George III of England needed money to pay off his quadrupled national debt. He turned to the richest people in the realm, the Colonists, and taxed paper, glass, paint, lead, land deeds and tea. The result was the American Revolution.

• Louis XVI of France did the same thing in 1889 as the French national debt had grown 10-fold under the opulence of his grandfather, Louis XIV. The church and nobility, previously exempt from taxes, refused to pay the new taxes, resulting in the French Revolution.

• In the 1920s in Germany, the Weimar Republic did not meet the debt obligations imposed upon them by World War I’s Treaty of Versailles. The resulting inflation wiped out the middle class and gave rise to a dictatorship headed by Adolf Hitler.

That’s great history, but all of that is hundreds of years old. Isn’t there some new thinking that applies to these times?

No, there is no new thinking. All of the things that are being done today have been done in history, and all of them have failed.

The size and power of the government always coincides with debt, war and currency debasement. We are taught to think that government will help us, but that’s theoretical and misplaced thinking.

Many great thinkers warned us about outsized central governments.

Our politicians did not pay attention.

Conclusion

What moves the stock and bond markets up and down is supply and demand.

If demand exceeds the supply of stocks and bonds, then those markets will increase in value and, similarly, if supply exceeds demand, price will go down. Current increases in stock and bond market prices are a result of cash (demand) exceeding supply.

When “stimulus funds” run out, there will be no cash to support the markets at these levels. Inflation will set in and cause interest rates to increase. Interest-rate increases cause bond prices to decrease. As interest rates increase, banks will see their notes paid off by lenders who have been accumulating cash and who do not want to pay the higher interest rates.

The wise and judicious investor will ignore the “cash is trash” talk and maintain healthy balances of liquidity.

Imagine, also, the price of gold moving to $1,400 an ounce from $20 an ounce in less than 100 years. How can educated people allow this?

What does Market Watch suggest?

Patience can yield great opportunities for investment. Build cash. Use it to pay off debt (when rates will go up), or buy gold and silver. Real estate is cheap, but the stock market remains overpriced. The 30year bull market in bonds is over as interest rates begin to increase, and both the stock and bond markets are priced to cause investors to loose money.

Furthermore, there is no indication that they will. There’s no plan to reduce the size of government, no plan to stop borrowing money by the central government, no plan to quit making money out of nothing, no plan to reduce the debt, no plan to disburse the power of government back to the people and no plan to start any plans.

Why does Market Watch think government debt is wrong?

The government doesn’t want to cut back on expenditures because that would mean a reduction in the size and power of government. Here’s a statistic that is amazing and was printed in 2005 in USA Today. The average household’s share of the government’s debt was $473,500 in 2005. According to several new studies, the most prominent of which was cited in last month’s Market Watch by Professor Warren Koplikoff, Boston University, each household’s share of the public debt now is at least five times that. These are astounding numbers. To think that each family in this country is obligated for $2 million- plus of U.S. government debt and obligations is absurd. It’s not only unacceptable, it’s untenable, and these obligations can never be met.

If obligations cannot be met, then the entity that cannot meet the obligations is bankrupt. Is that what Market Watch is suggesting?

Yes. Our Federal Reserve System is bankrupt and, hence, the federal government is bankrupt. The dollar, once a standard of excellence, is now being rejected around the world in settlements of debt. Since the founding of the Fed in 1913, the dollar has lost more than 98% of its purchasing power.

Yet, for 125 years, from the coinage act of 1792 until the founding of the Fed in 1913, the U.S. was on the gold and silver standard (commodity money) required by the Constitution. Consequently, the dollar

There is no particularly good economic news to discuss in this month’s Market Watch. More importantly, there continues to be no reason to invest in the stock or bond markets. In the last 21 months, the Federal Reserve System has issued $2.5 trillion of new money (QE1 and QE2). That new money has been successful in keeping government employees employed. It has further been successful in increasing the number of federal employees; it’s bailed out the banks and the big-money interests GEORGE that support leading RAUCH politicians. This is European politics and economics at its best, and it is a perfect example of what the Founding Fathers didn’t want to happen in America.

The common man this was to help hasn’t seen a dime of stimulus money. The significance for the common man is that increased government deficit spending has added thousands of dollars per capita to what each of us owes as our share of the public debt. The government continues to mire us with debt and take away our liberty through taxes and forced programs most of us do not want.

There is only one problem in this country that has created every problem we have and that is the increasing size and power of the central government.

We will have a stagnant economy until the public re-educates themselves and realizes that most of our elected officials care more about getting re-elected than they care about following the Constitution’s instructions on how they should represent their constituents.

Christine Taylor Barrett, individually and as successor trustee of the Harvey Taylor Family Trust, sold the home at 6600 Gulf of Mexico Drive to Paul Gould, of New York City, for $3,025,000. Built in 2001, the 3,337-square-foot home has three bedrooms, four bathrooms and a swimming pool. The property last sold before the current structure was built for $249,200 in January 1996.

The sale was the largest residential transaction recorded during the week of Dec. 13 through Dec. 17 on Longboat, Lido, St. Armands and Bird keys at the Sarasota and Manatee county courthouses. The week had 15 residential sales, more than double the seven that occurred the previous week, in addition to the $3.7 million sale of Whitney Beach Plaza reported in the Dec. 23 edition of The Longboat Observer. Of the week’s sales, 10 occurred on Longboat Key, including five in Manatee County; three took place on Bird Key; and two occurred on Lido Key. Three of the week’s sales exceeded $1 million.

The hand looks difficult from the start West’s first double forecasts a difficult hand. He obviously holds an opening count and is hoping that his partner will be able to bid. East’s pass should tell you where the missing trump is. West leads the top-three diamonds, and it is your turn to play.

Ruff the third diamond and lead a spade to the king. West’s play of the Jack makes you consider the bad break in your trump suit. Another spade lead from declarer and the contract is in jeopardy. East can pick the time to trump a heart and exit with a

trump. Declarer’s hearts are lost, and he must also lose at least one club.

Declarer cannot play four rounds of spades. East will win the fourth spade and cash diamonds. The best counter to a bad spade division is to continue spades and let East win the second spade trick. Granted, it will cost a trick if both spades and hearts divide favorably, but the value of making an overtrick is minimal. There is still a trump in the dummy to a diamond return by East.

West’s takeout double suggests a

heart holding and the king of clubs.

When South cashes the ace and queen of spades, West is squeezed. To retain the king of clubs, West must discard a heart, which leaves South with four spades, five hearts and a club winner.

If West discards the king of clubs, South will end up with a different score of tricks but the same total — 10.

The city of Sarasota’s public art contest is officially on!

“Bharata,” by Lake Worth artist Claudia Jane Klein, which went up Dec. 17, at Selby Five Points Park — is the 12th and final installment in the city-sponsored “Intersections” public-art competition.

Handpicked by the city’s Public Art Committee, contenders include Sarasota artists Robin Morgan, Dennis Kowal, Bruce White, James Evans and David Gonya and a few

out-of-towners, such as Klein.

By now, you’ve probably got a good feel for the sculptures, and you’re about to get a whole lot more familiar with them.

The pieces will remain on display until November, at which point the City Commission (with input from the Public Art Committee) will choose one work to become a part of the city’s permanent art collection.

And, no, “Unconditional Surrender” is not in the running.

SCHWARTZ from 1B Even when the telephone company calls to tell him his service has been disrupted by a snipped wire, Schwartz, 70, is pleasant.

“No point in getting worked up,” he says as he sets down the phone. “My cell still works.”

Where’s the radical composer with the Juilliard training who incited public outrage when he locked audiences in a stuffy theater and burned human hair and rancid meat during a 1968 performance about the suffering of Jews in a Nazi concentration camp?

Where’s the guy who went hunting for mushrooms with avant-garde composer John Cage, in Puerto Rico?

“Actually,” Schwartz says. “It’s been a good year for me. In many ways, I’m better than ever. Some people say 70 is some sort of milestone — like you hit it and that’s it. You’re at the end of your line.”

He’s in his kitchen, brewing espresso, a habit he refuses to give up, despite having had open-heart surgery a few years ago.

“If you don’t mind,” Schwartz says over the gurgle of the pot, “I’m going to have a heavy-duty dose of this stuff.”

Two minutes later, he steps out the kitchen, balancing a tiny coffee cup on a dainty saucer. He sits at a glass table overlooking the staggered rooflines of Spanish architecture in Burns Square and sips from the cup, smiling as the drink slides down his throat.

“For me, 70 is the new 30,” Schwartz continues. “Sure I can’t run and jump and play tennis like I used to, but I think of myself as a young man. I don’t feel old at all — whatever old is supposed to be.

I’m still hungry for new experiences.”

Lucky for Schwartz, who retired 11 years ago as dean of humanities at the University of Puerto Rico, new opportunities keep cropping up all over the world.

In this year alone, the composer’s work was performed by musicians in China, Puerto Rico, Washington, D.C., Indiana, Missouri, and Florida — just to name a few.

Collaborations and world premieres are planned next year with the Orchestre de Flute Français, in Paris; the Salvador Dalí Museum, in St. Petersburg; Fuzión Dance Artists; the Birmingham Art Museum, in Alabama; and the New Yorkbased chamber ensemble Sybarite 5.

For a man who often describes his music as unsettling The composer as a and challenging to boy growing up in program, Schwartz Texas. already has an impressive list of high-profile projects on the horizon.

“Let’s put it this way,” he says. “I’m fortunate to have wonderful performers who promote my work.”

These performers include pianist Joel Sachs, director of the New Juilliard Ensemble and co-director of the New Yorkbased experimental music troupe Continuum; and Sarasota Orchestra principal tubist Jay Hunsberger, who performed Schwartz’s “The Grey Road” in August at the composer’s 25th anniversary retrospective, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Inspired by the post-apocalyptic novel, “The Road,” by Cormac McCarthy and the works of artists Francis Bacon, Max Neumann and Anselm Kiefer, Schwartz’s eerie solo tuba piece is proof that the composer hasn’t softened in his retirement and an example of how far musicians are willing to go to perform Schwartz’s work.

“There are many musicians who don’t feel comfortable with the histrionics,”

Puerto Rico “In the music world, we attracted people from everywhere. I was wonderfully surprised by the access I had to culture in a place like San Juan.”

Electronic sounds “For someone born in 1940, I didn’t always hear these sounds. But you get used Schwartz says, referring to the scripted noises and unusual facial expressions he writes into many of his pieces. “But there are many musicians who discover they have these hidden talents or incredible acting abilities by playing my music.”

He rises from the table and walks over to a melancholy painting hanging over one of his many bookshelves. It’s an original work by Neumann, a birthday present from his wife, Marta.

“He does some very powerful, tortured works,” Schwartz says of the German artist. “I really like him.”

Schwartz could just as easily be talking about himself, if not for the fact that the composer’s repertoire is as hilarious as it is weighty.

Solo Conductor,” in which Roberto-Juan Gonzalez, director of the North Bay Philharmonic, in Napa Valley, Calif., stood in front of a musician-less orchestra and passionately conducted a six-minute piece devoid of sound.

Or the irreverent, “Fashionable Music,” in which both Gonzalez and Schwartz donned robes adorned with small objects and using drumsticks, tapped rhythms off their own bodies.

“Mozart was probably the most divine of all the composers,” Schwartz says.

“And he was a practical joker who wrote some pretty scandalous songs — the kind of pieces you’re allowed to laugh with — which is what being a human being is all about. If we were always so serious, we’d be like living prunes.”

Osprey trop-rocker releases his ninth album James ‘Sunny Jim’ White has worked as a musician for more than three decades.The easygoing singer/ songwriter shares the simple secrets to his success.

You won’t catch James White wastin’ away in Margaritaville. He’s too busy writing songs and recording albums.

The 53-year-old Osprey resident, who goes by the stage name “Sunny Jim,” has more records to his name than most pop stars.

In fact, White, a Texas native, has been making music for so long his first album, “Postcards from Seven Mile Beach,” is out of print.

The title for his ninth album — the selfexplanatory “KISS (Keep it Simple)” — was inspired by a note the singer taped to the door in his garage recording studio.

On the note he wrote: Keep it simple, stupid.

Rather than mix in synthesizer sounds with the usual catchy trop rock guitar riffs, White decided to go acoustic-only, playing snare or Congo drums sparingly on various tracks.

With “Keep it Simple” as his mantra, White produced the CD in five weeks, filling it with songs and stories inspired by friends and family — some true and some imagined, as indicated by the message on the inside of the CD case.

“It was me in front of the mic with a guitar,” says White, a prolific songwriter who launched his music career more than 30 years ago when he joined a nine-piece show band that covered songs from the 1960s and 1970s. “I’ve been writing songs since I was 12 years old, so I pay close attention to what moves me and how I can translate that into something that moves other people.”

DID YOU KNOW? James White and his wife, Adela, got a shout-out in Jimmy Buffett’s 1999 autobiography, “A Pirate Looks at Fifty,” after the three became friends following a chance encounter 13 years ago, in the Grand Cayman Islands.

The story goes: White, who was working as the resident performer at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cayman, gave Buffett and his young son a ride from the airport to the hotel and later babysat the boy for Buffett when he went out to dinner with friends.

“It was really fortuitous,” White says.

“Plus, it was nice to see the legendary Jimmy Buffett change a diaper.”

White’s skills as a songwriter make him stand out among other beach ballad singers, especially in Southwest Florida. His lyrics are contagious, cheeky and often unapologetically optimistic.

When he sings about coconuts and palm trees, cabana boys and ocean breezes, you can’t help but picture yourself on a beach, sipping a fruity cocktail, unburdened and unwound.

“Trop-rock music is about the upside of life, really,” White says. “Yeah, it’s escapism, and I understand the power of blues music and all, but I’ve never understood why so many people want to dwell on the downside of life. I’d rather sing about the fun stuff.”

“Most people will say it’s easier to write a sad song,” James White says. “When you write a happy song, you walk a fine line between happy and schmaltzy. It’s not easy to do.”

White may not be a household name like industry megastar Jimmy Buffett, but he shares many of the singer’s devoted “Parrothead” fan base, thanks to regular broadcasts on Buffett’s Radio Margaritaville on SIRIUS Satellite Radio.

White travels about two weekends a month, performing at private parties, concerts and fundraising events in cities all over the country. A father of 18-year-old twin daughters, he says the key to working as a musician is behaving professionally and maintaining a healthy work/family balance.

His advice to aspiring rockers: “Show up on time and deliver the goods. You’re there to provide the party, not be the party.”

COMFORT AND CONTRAST There’s a new kid on the restaurant row that is South Tamiami Trail, opposite Sarasota Memorial Hospital. It is Square 1 Burgers & Bar, in the real estate formerly occupied by Lonjevity Café. Several improvements are clear before tasting a thing, because the new operators are greatly expanding the parking space and have come up with an interior design that is comfortable, stylish and quite unlike anything else in town. They call it “cowboy chic.” “Sexy saloon” would be another option, given features that range from deco echo chairs with pony-upholstered seats to an astounding red chandelier hanging over a corner booth — worth a visit in and of itself.

It is the menu, however, that is most intriguing. Jack and Mrs. Spratt could eat here together on options that range from flat-out comfort foot to happily healthful.

For Mrs. S: “X-rated grilled cheese,” a gilded lily with gruyere and cheddar, dill pickle slices, beefsteak tomato and may-

Spread mayonnaise on both pieces of bread. Add three slices of gruyère and two large slices of aged cheddar cheese. Add sliced tomatoes and pickles. Butter outside of bread and grill at medium heat until well browned and cheese begins to melt.

This sandwich is also wonderful on challah and whole-grain bread.

Topping: 4 tablespoons melted butter 2 cups panko crumbs (Japanese breadcrumbs) Heat panko crumbs with melted butter in a medium pan. Stir until lightly brown.  Boil pasta according to directions.

Cook until al dente and drain.  Melt butter in large pot. Sauté minced onions until translucent. Whisk in flour and cook on low heat for 5 minutes. Do not brown flour mixture.  In a separate pot, heat milk and cream and salt. When it is at a slight boil, slowly whisk flour mixture into cream. Let cream sauce start to thicken.

Add cheeses and chilis and season.

Gently mix in pasta until cheese sauce is distributed throughout the pasta.  Place in a large, buttered casserole dish and bake at 350° covered with foil for 20 minutes. Remove foil, top with browned panko crumbs and bake until top is bubbly. 

As we reflect on the first half of the 2010-2011 season, we realize there have been two groups that have been doing just about everything right: Sarasota Orchestra and the Artist Series of Sarasota.

Both groups have changed with the times without lowering or diminishing their principles. The 21st-century audience has become accustomed to both visual and vocal complements to concerts and recitals. Leonard Bernstein was one of the first in this country to turn to his audience, speak with them (and I use the word â&#x20AC;&#x153;withâ&#x20AC;? rather than â&#x20AC;&#x153;toâ&#x20AC;? or worse, â&#x20AC;&#x153;atâ&#x20AC;?), and draw them into a more intimate atmosphere of performance. The fourth wall has crumbled and the proscenium has vanished from traditional concerts, and we are finding ourselves in the exciting position of being part of the orchestra rather than outsiders and bystanders.

Both Leif Bjaland at his orchestral concerts and the solo singers and instrumentalists at the Artist Series are inviting us to be involved in their music-making, and

itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s opened a wonderful world of understanding to us that we seem to be enjoying and appreciating.

In addition, both the Sarasota Orchestra and the Artist Series are using photographs, videos and other visual aids that buttress and support our concert experiences. They donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t use these devices unless they enhance their performances.

Certainly, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no reason to show a video to heighten our understanding of a Beethoven symphony or a Brahms piano concerto. But thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no question that an historic video of 19th-century New York will enhance our visceral sensations while hearing a work by Dvorak that he wrote in that time and place.

These â&#x20AC;&#x153;new-fangledâ&#x20AC;? concepts, combined with a raised standard of excellence, seem to be packing the houses of these groups.

With a new year ahead, we may be in for even more innovation. If they keep up their track records, they may find themselves in the enviable position of having to add even more performances. â&#x20AC;&#x201D; June LeBell

Film Swan’

Even if you dislike ballet, you’re going to love Darren Aronofsky’s new film, “Black Swan.” Simply put, it’s a perfect movie.

In this subversive psychological thriller he pulls out all the stops, creating a mindblowing masterpiece destined to go down in filmmaking history.

Natalie Portman goes dark and gives the performance of a lifetime as Nina, a ballerina sinking into insanity.

Paralleling the conflict of good vs. evil in Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake,” the film documents her descent as she dances the lead. Required to play opposite roles (Black Swan/White Swan), Nina excels at playing the good swan. But autocratic Artistic Director Thomas (Vincent Cassel) finds her too frigid to let loose the evil demanded to dance the bad bird.

Nina, a zealous perfectionist, realizes she must free herself from a plethora of repressions. One of which includes her overbearing, doting mother (Barbara Hershey). Another is sexual, according to Thomas, as he encourages her to explore her body. When a new dancer, Lily (Mila Kunis), joins the troupe, Nina recognizes that she possesses that dangerous side so elusive to her, constituting a threat. Nina obsesses, and the consequences are dire.

Nina’s psychological breakdown is magnificently chronicled through Aronofsky’s incredible camerawork. Exclusively employing a hand-held would not seem advantageous when shooting ballet, but it’s signature Aronofsky — utterly brilliant. His dabbling into the doppelganger of Nina’s fractured psyche is deliciously disturbing. I was reminded of Roman Polanski’s exquisite “Repulsion” while watching “Black Swan.”

The behind-the-scenes brutality of ballet, the artist’s obsessive drive for perfection, and the dark demons that inhabit one’s soul all surface with crystal clarity in “Black Swan.” Aronofsky leaves his audience with a parting shot very similar to the one in “The Wrestler.” You’re left feeling teetering on the edge of a ledge.
