T

here was not enough oxygen in the room. I mean, there was, at one time, but not at that particular moment. I had sucked it all up, huffing and puffing to catch my breath while ducking behind my heavy bag to hide my unsanctioned break from the trainer.

“OK, let’s do uppercut, uppercut, left jab, right hook!” yelled out Taylor Elsenheimer, Title Boxing Club’s owner and an indefatigable trainer whose job was to be nice to me while also pushing me to the point of my current crouched position behind the bag, hoping he wouldn’t find me.

He did.

Upon discovery, I promptly began to flail my arms at the bag, in a gesture more Hail Mary than haymaker, landing polite, pretend punches in an effort to spare my aching shoulders.

“Here, twist your hips into it, like this,” Taylor bounded over to show

me, as he punched the bag — hard — sending it swinging out in front of him. “This is how you get power into your punch.”

I smiled feebly, nodding, thinking there was no way to explain that it wasn’t power I was seeking at that point — it was reprieve.

Now, granted, I’m no Rhonda Rousey, but I’m somewhat athletic, having played college athletics and participated in several runs and cycling events since then.

Which is why, out of fear of humiliation and shame, I took a deep breath and kept going as best I could until the end of the session. Only then did I finally plop to the floor, collapsing on a not-so-small stain of my own sweat. Red-faced, soaked and stinky, I was tapped out.

It felt good.

It’s crazy, I know. But few things feel as rewarding as an all-out workout, and few routines can push you to the shaky-legs, exhausted feeling that you can accomplish in group classes

like the one I took at Title Boxing.

The good news is, if you are just as crazy and you like this sort of thing, there are lots of options in the Lakewood Ranch area stocked with plenty of trainers who can’t wait to work you until you beg for mercy. Or, there are those that mask calorieburning workouts in the guise of fun, by dancing, spinning or, punching.

However, if you’re more about a nice pilsner than a push up, there’s good news for you, too. In January, Main Street welcomed its first craft beer purveyor, Craft Growlers to Go & Tasting Room (see page 24).

There, you can relax and sample a few of the 45 tasty brews on tap.

I enjoy both a good workout and a good beer, just not equally. Luckily, the new beer shop also sells growlers to enjoy at home — perfect for sitting in a hot tub while nursing sore muscles.

W

hen most people think of the Sarasota Polo Club, they may conjure images of well-heeled spectators enjoying food and family while watching organized teams compete on a pristine Bermuda grass field.

But Lakewood Ranch’s polo tradition sprouted nearly by happenstance. It all began when some of the cowboys who worked in agricultural operations for Lakewood Ranch developer Schroeder-Manatee Ranch (SMR) began playing “knock-around” on a grass field in their spare time. That spurred Robin Uihlein, one of SMR’s owners, to donate mallets, saddles and a few horses to the motley crew so they could play a more proper semblance of the game.

That spark grew into an idea for SMR to include polo in its plans for a 600-acre swath of its masterplanned community.

Now, 25 years later, the 130-acre Sarasota Polo Club features nine world-class fields, a clubhouse, pavilion, barns and 48 private residences surrounding it.

Past stewards of the club have called it the “field of dreams,” referring to the movie’s famous line: If you build it, they will come.

Come they did. In the beginning, the club had Sunday matches that cost $5 per carload to attend.

Even with few frills, people flocked to the field for a day of family fun.

Today, crowds clamor for tailgate spots on Sunday afternoon at the 17 public matches starting in December and ending the first week of April.

The Sarasota Polo Club also has become a premier place to play, with competitors traveling across the state to join in the fun at a place known for its fast fields and fairness of play.

In its 25th year, the club now includes children’s camps, charity events and more, and serves as the perfect showcase for all the area has to offer. After all, those cowboys knew how to have a good time.

C

raft beer has arrived in Florida, and Lakewood Ranch is no exception.

Multiple craft beer bars and microbreweries have opened in Sarasota in the last few years, and more are set to come online.

In Lakewood Ranch, a former Longboat Key resident has brewed up an alternative take on the scene: a growler shop and tasting room.

Jeanne Dooley, a former professional golf instructor who was living in Atlanta, decided to open such a venue. Craft Growlers to Go & Tasting Room opened the first week in January on Lakewood Ranch Main Street.

Before deciding on her location, Dooley visited several locations in Sarasota, looking for the right “feel” to open her craft beer growler shop.

She’d never been to Lakewood Ranch, but she’d heard of it, and her real estate agent persuaded her to visit.

Upon first glance, she knew he’d finally found what she wanted — a hometown feel.

“The people who live here, they belong here and know they belong here,” Dooley says. “It reminded me of the South. No one knows a stranger.”

Opening a new business is a daunting task, but now that Dooley is more than a month into running her own craft beer store, she says she wakes up happy on Monday mornings.

“I woke up and thought, this could be a lot of fun,” she says.

“In golf you have to get the job done, even if you’re tired, or it’s 100 degrees,” she says. “You still have to focus on that next hole. I’ve exercised that ability now.”

The store offers a 45-tap rotation of local, regional and some national craft beers ranging from the darkest of porters and stouts to the palest of ales and specialty sour beers. While customers are encouraged to stop in, relax and hang out for a beer or two, it’s not a bar. It’s more like going to a coffee shop, only with beer.

Dooley attributes some of the store’s “good vibe” to artwork custom-made by local artist Amy Johnson. The colorful, 3-D pieces that brighten the walls add to the warmth of the copper-top tables and wood accents.

“The artwork has a feel-good quality,” Dooley says.

Quirky snacks like Uncle Bud’s deep-fried peanuts or Boardwalk Food Co.’s take-home samplings give hungry customers a couple options to munch on. High-top tables offer a spot to chat or work from the WiFi, and a corner nook of couches offers a more intimate setting.

The atmosphere is a big selling point for John Rivera, a Lakewood Ranch resident.

“It’s quaint, not overwhelming like some bars,” he says.

He also enjoys the opportunity to explore the different kinds of beer.

“There’s a variety, and you can come taste them,” he says. “If you’re a connoisseur, you can see what you like and take it home.”

Customers — from near and far — have been telling Dooley and her staff that they’ve been waiting for such a venue to open in Lakewood Ranch.

John Taylor, a Cape Cod resident, has been visiting the area for three years since his daughter moved to Lakewood Ranch.

On a Wednesday afternoon while waiting for his family on Main Street, he wandered into Craft Growlers to Go, curious about the new shop.

“It’s neat — (Main Street) needed it,” he says.

He sipped a deep dark glass of Yeti imperial stout, and persuaded his stepson and wife to stay for a beer, too.

Dooley, who has been studying to get her Cicerone certificate, similar to that of a wine sommelier, says she’s been pleasantly surprised by the knowledge of craft beer her customers have walked in with, and also appreciated those who were curious to learn more.

“I feel happy. People like coming in and it’s fun to come to work,” Dooley says. “Lakewood Ranch was ready for this.”

BREW 101 Beers are divided into two categories: ales and lagers.

Within each category are different styles. Here’s a selection from each: n American Pilsner (lager): Pale in color, thinbodied. The most common beer in the U.S. Example: Rolling Rock n Bock (lager): Rich, dark beers. Bock refers to a male deer or goat in German.

Example: Salvator Dopple Bock n American Wheat (ale): Light bodied, crisp and refreshing, usually flavored with fruit or spices.

Example: Magic Hat Hocus Pocus n Porter (ale): Dark color and deep malt flavor, with more pronounced hops than a stout, which is also an ale.

Example: Anchor Porter n India Pale Ale or IPA (ale): A pale ale with more pronounced hops and generally a higher alcohol content.

A

s you drive around Lakewood Ranch and its surrounding community, it’s hard to escape the pounding of hammers and nails as workers erect new homes daily.

But what goes into the cost of a home?

Sure, there are costs for labor and materials and the land itself. But what about future funding for schools, roadways and other infrastructure needs? The collections for those costs are called impact fees, and governments assess them when new homes are constructed and occupied.

In Manatee County, commissioners voted in December to raise impact fees from their 2011 rates. Then, on Jan. 26, they reinstated impact fees for the Manatee County School District, at its request. Those fees had not been collected since 2009.

The new rates go into effect April 18 and change the fee structure for new single-family homes from one based on the number of bedrooms to one based on square footage.

Manatee County’s portion includes a new component, a fee for libraries. Other fees include law enforcement, parks, public safety and educational facilities. Multi-modal transportation charges vary by area of the county.

Rates will increase over the next three years.

Manatee adopted rates 80% of what’s considered supportable by an impact fee study adopted in December. And the school district’s rates are at 50% of supportable rates. Both will climb in 2017 and again in 2018, until they’ve both reached the 100% supportable rates.

Homebuilder Pat Neal, owner of Neal Communities, says impact fees and permitting costs account for about 7% of total costs for a new home.

So, for a $346,000, 2,500-square-foot home, they make up about $84 per month of a $1,200 mortgage payment.

“Ultimately, this is a tax, and all taxes are paid by the consumer,” Neal says. “It presents a bigger problem for an affordable house than a $2 million house.”

Under the current impact fee structure, total impact fees for a 2,000-square-foot, three-bedroom home would be $6,249.19. Under the April 18, 2016 adopted rates, the total impact fees would increase to $10,009 in the Lakewood Ranch area. That equates to about a 62% increase.

For a $200,000 home, that means impact fees go from accounting for 3% of costs to 5%.

Impact fees can be used for the creation of infrastructure, but not for maintaining it. So, for example, Manatee County’s impact fee for parks can pay for a new playground and its equipment, but not to repair existing equipment.

Eye on the Ball Pittsburgh Pirates relief pitcher Tony Watson explains how he balances a quiet life in Lakewood Ranch and seven months of ‘electrifying’ baseball.

ittsburgh Pirates relief pitcher Tony Watson is the quintessential corn-fed, all-American ballplayer you root for in sports movies.

He’s the guy with a mighty left arm from a small town in Iowa, who cherishes his Bob Feller-signed baseball, his wife and 1-year-old daughter and the adrenaline rush he felt when he retired White Sox slugger José Abreu with one pitch at the 2014 All-Star game in Minnesota.

“I threw only one ball that game and it’s been my most memorable pitch so far — one and done,” Watson says. “I made it count.”

The 30-year-old southpaw, who was drafted in 2007 by the Pirates, has been making his time in East County count as well. Three years ago, he moved on a whim to Lakewood Ranch to be close to McKechnie Field in Bradenton for the Pirates’ spring training season.

He didn’t expect to stay, but fell in love with the community’s tight-knit, homey vibe. It reminded him of a bigger, more cosmopolitan version of his hometown in Dallas County, Iowa.

At 6 feet, 4 inches, the MLB player sticks out among the masses. In the off-season, he spends his mornings working out at Athletic Edge, a sports performance and conditioning gym on Main Street in Lakewood Ranch, and his evenings noshing on oysters with his family at the Lucky Pelican Bistro.

Although his daughter has just learned to walk and his son has yet to be born (Watson’s second child is due in May), the pitcher already has visions of watching his children play ball at Lakewood Ranch High School.

“My wife played softball,” Watson says. “I have a feeling both my kids will be into sports. I’ll be out there, retired, cheering them on from the sidelines.”

The first time I stepped into the batter’s box at Wrigley Field, I thought to myself, Babe Ruth stood here. When you respect the history, you respect the game.

Facing Chipper Jones for the first time was pretty amazing. I was a huge Atlanta Braves fan as a kid. To stare him down 60 feet away in the batter’s box was a dream come true. Of course, I couldn’t let that get to me because it was my job to get him out.

Being on the same field and competing with these guys who’ve had Hall of Fame careers is special, like I’ll never forget playing for the first time in Yankee Stadium and watching Derek Jeter step out onto the field.

There’s so much quirkiness in the clubhouse. We see each other more than we see our families. There are 20 off days in 182 days.

You’ve got to learn to come together. We keep it loose; it’s a long year. Last season we did a costume trip where everybody dressed as a superhero. The whole bullpen dressed as Mortal Kombat characters. I went as Raiden.

The guys on the team told me having a kid would change everything. It does, 100%. If I throw a curveball and a player hits it for a home run, my daughter doesn’t know or care. No matter the final score, I’m still a hero in her book.

I still feel like a little kid at the age of 30.

When guys ask me how old I am, I find myself stressing out because there’s no longer a two in front of my age. It’s crazy to think in my profession you retire before you’re 40. I feel great, though. I’ll be doing this as long as my body will allow me. Thirty is the new 20, right?

I know it sounds cliché; playing catch in the backyard with my dad was where it all began.

Baseball was big in my family. My dad is an athletic director at a high school in Iowa. My grandfather was a high school baseball coach.

Baseball was always big in my family. I was blessed to be able to throw with my left hand.

Only the closers and starters get walkup music, but if I had a song, I’d choose Led Zeppelin’s “When the Levee Breaks.”

Your music should be for the fans, not just for you. It’s an appropriate song if you’ve got to run in from the bullpen.

It takes a special lady to put up with us baseball guys. We’re gone from our families so much. I’m really lucky to have my wife. She keeps the household together while I’m on the road. The late night flights, the early morning departures, the 10-day road trips, the hotel stays … it’s not easy, but I wouldn’t change it for anything.

There are no bandwagon fans in Pittsburgh.

Our fans aren’t just fans. They’re fanatics.

They expect success. Our 2013 wild-card victory against the Cincinnati Reds is a game I’ll never forget. It was an electrifying experience. Even the veteran guys said it was the loudest stadium they’ve ever heard. The Pirates had lost for 20 straight years before that. We’ve been on the verge of a comeback for the last couple years.

As a kid, I thought it was a big deal when guys signed. I still have my Bob Feller autographed baseball. (Feller pitched from 1936 to 1956 for the Cleveland Indians.) I’ll never forget when he signed that thing for me. He was in his 80s at the time, playing in the backyard of a neighbor’s house back home in Iowa. I ran up to him and asked for his autograph. I was 7 or 8, and excited doesn’t even begin to describe how I felt.

If she’s meeting a client for lunch, she’ll usually choose one of her favorite restaurants — Seasons 52, Brio and Kona Grill, to name a few.

eet Violeta Huesman, Keiser University’s director of Student Services, wife, mother of three, community volunteer and overall superwoman.

Huesman seems to be everywhere — serving on boards, attending events and volunteering for causes. And that’s on top of her full-time gig.

Given her reputation as one of the Ranch’s busiest residents, we wanted to know: How does she do it all?

Huesman says it’s all about learning when to let go. “The laundry won’t always be done in time; the kids won’t always get vegetables at the table.

Who cares? There is no balance,” she says. “I’m the craziest woman, and my kids will tell you that. I have failed, but you learn from those failures. They shape you for whatever the journey holds for you.”

In her position with Keiser, which she’s held for seven years, that’s her job: helping others start on their journey toward building a career.

For her, the most rewarding part of her job is the moment a graduate calls or emails to let her know he or she got a job. “They always want to thank me, but what they don’t know is that it’s all them,” she says. “They got the job because of their own efforts, willingness and most of all because they believed they could do it. Whenever a student wants to thank me, I tell them to just pay it forward. They now can encourage other students to follow their dreams.”

Huesman says it’s satisfying to work with students and help them get where they want to go.

“You have to love people,” she says. “That’s what this job is. That’s what success is. My goal each day is to help someone’s life.”

Up before the rest of her family rises, most mornings you can find Huesman working through the circuit training stations at the YMCA. “You may think I am crazy, but this is my family balance. This is my time to breathe, collect and get ready for the hustle and bustle of the day.”

Shortly after returning home and getting ready, with her home-brewed black coffee with a hint of cinnamon in hand, Hues-

man is ready to head out the door. She always makes sure to kiss her husband of 27 years, Mark, goodbye and always reminds him to “make it a good day.”

Huesman is usually at her desk by this time, reading and answering her many emails and leafing through the newspaper. “If it’s a Thursday morning, I pick up the East County Observer. It’s good to know what’s happening in our community.”

No afternoon looks the same for Huesman. Keiser University is different from most colleges, for it has an orientation and a new graduating class every four weeks. When Huesman isn’t running around campus ensuring that her new and graduating students are being provided with everything they need, she’s out and about, volunteering for the community. She attends various board and committee meetings for organizations such as Tidewell Hospice, the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance, Career Source and the Lakewood Ranch Community Fund-Giving Circle. She also currently serves as the co-chair of the Programming Committee for the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance.

As the end of each work day comes to a close, Huesman checks her calendar and makes her to-do list for the following day, when she prepares to do it all over again. An ideal night at home involves hanging out with her family and, if it’s Thursday, pizza and a new episode of Downton Abbey on DVR.

lthough they don’t have a building with office hours or troops of volunteers, women’s giving circles are some of the Ranch’s most up-andcoming charitable groups.

Giving circles are a group of individuals who pool their resources to raise at least $10,000 over five years, which they donate to local charities.

Each year, members donate an amount, which is tax deductible and contingent on how many members are in that group.

Circles aren’t nonprofit organizations; they help support them, says Amanda Tullidge, founder of the Cheers for Charity Giving Circle.

All circles vary in age, causes supported, number of members and other factors.

“The circles are pretty flexible groups of women who band together to combine their resources, time and money, so they can give back to the community in a greater amount than they could by themselves,” Tullidge says.

Tullidge’s group is aimed at professional women, such as attorneys, nurses, accountants and leaders of nonprofits.

Giving circle members also agree on causes on which they focus. Cheers for Charity tends to help groups targeted at helping the homeless, women and children.

The 14-member group hosted its first fundraiser last May and raised more than $2,000. The ladies donated $500 to four groups: Turning Points, a homeless shelter in Bradenton; We Care Manatee, which provides health care to those who can’t afford insurance; Stillpoint House of Prayer, a food pantry in Bradenton; and Women’s Resource Center of Manatee, which helps women stabilize their lives after a traumatic incident.

It also generated $500 over the holidays, which members used to take under privileged children on a shopping trip to Sears for clothing and toys.

“Each child maybe got $75 to $100 to spend,” Tullidge says. “With all the discounts the store offered, the children walked out with piles of clothes and shoes, pajamas, Dora the Explorer backpacks and other things to put under the Christmas tree. It was so special, and you could tell parents were grateful, too.”

Tullidge’s creation of the Ranch’s sixth women’s giving circle is an example of her following in her mother’s footsteps. Her mother, Julie Smith, founded the first giving circle in 2011.

“Just seeing her and her friends inspired me,” Tullidge says. “I was impressed with what they could do collectively and how much more of an impact they had than just one person writing a check.”

Smith’s group, named Lakewood Ranch Women’s Charitable Fund, has grown from 10 members to 30. “We didn’t pick a jazzy name like everyone else,” Smith says. “We’ve since nicknamed ourselves Chicks with Checks.”

It wasn’t Smith’s intention to start a tradition in the Ranch, or to create a following. Smith created the giving circle concept in 2010 without even knowing she had. She talked with friends about creating a group of 10 women who each donate $200 per year for five years, and then donate those dollars to a charity of their choice.

No husbands allowed, though — women only, Smith says.

“All of a sudden I had four women interested,” Smith says. “And now we have 30. My thought was by pooling money together, creating that synergy, we’re building a mass that is greater than just one person.”

Now that her giving circle has gained momentum, Tullidge plans for it to grow to 30 members and to surpass the minimum $10,000 fundraising goal set by the Manatee Community Foundation, the umbrella organization that oversees giving circles.

“In time, I could see a realistic goal being to raise $50,000 over 10 years,” Tullidge says.

Cheers for Charity also hopes to encourage members to visit nonprofit groups in their spare time, not just when donating money.

“A few of us gave out food at Stillpoint, and we still go back on our own,” Tullidge says. “I hope circles can help us grow as a community and create a stronger appreciation for charities in our community. The group is greater than just one person donating money.”

BEHIND THE BAG: HAYDEN REIS

E

mily Stroud launched her popular brand of beach bags in March 2012. The line features totes and bag accessories that are designed to keep your things protected from the elements when you’re out on the beach, but it’s fashionable enough that you can tote it around for all the rest of things your day has to offer. We talked to the designer to learn more about Hayden Reis.

How did you come up with the concept and design?

I came up with the idea to start Hayden Reis just over four years ago. As a mom with two young kids who spends a lot of time at the beach, soccer fields, or by the pool, I never felt like I had the perfect bag I could do all of those activities with.

I wanted a carryall tote that was durable enough and big enough to pile all of my necessities in but was still fashionable. When I couldn’t find anything, I decided to create it. I needed to find a material that was perfect for the tote and sailcloth was just that. Each tote is lined with interior pockets and zips for privacy and security. It also includes a snap hook to keep keys or another Hayden Reis accessory close at hand.

participating in the work program isn’t just a way to pass the time. It is a chance for redemption.

long the grounds of the Manatee County Central Jail, five good-natured horses lazily graze on hay and eagerly welcome anyone who ventures up to their fence. Just a few months ago, they were confiscated on Wingate Road in Myakka City, when their precarious health condition concerned the deputies who transported them to the jail’s pastures.

Since the horses’ arrival in late December, deputies and inmates have cared for them, and their health steadily improved. They have been gaining weight despite the winter months, which typically wouldn’t happen, says Deputy Justin Yero. “When they got here, they were about a 1 on the Henneke Body Condition Scoring System,” he says. “It’ll take about a year for them to fully recover.”

With a score of 1, the horses were in poor health and emaciated with their spines and ribs protruding. By early February, their condition improved to a 2 or 3 on the scoring system — still thin, but certainly better, thanks, in part, to the inmates who work the farm and care for the animals as part of the Sheriff Office’s Leading Inmates to Future Employment program, known as LIFE. The LIFE program’s recuperative effects offer benefits for both the animals and humans, giving new life to the horses and new hope to the inmates.

On any given day, as many as 50 of the 1,100 inmates are qualified to work in the LIFE program. They’re consid-

ered low-risk inmates who are doing time for non-violent crimes — stealing and DUIs are common. LIFE started in 1995 with Lt. John Potts growing vegetables with inmates. Over the years, it has evolved into a dozen classes and a partnership with Manatee Technical College, which currently provides three on-site teachers for the wide variety of programs.

On the farm, the inmates gather and wash eggs from nearly 3,000 chickens; at the carpentry shop they build benches and bookshelves; the aquaculture, horticulture and hydroponics workers tend to hundreds of heads of lettuce and other vegetables and thousands of tilapia fish.

For 41-year-old Daniel Berusken, who’s serving a 364-day sentence for theft, it’s an opportunity to learn something new while teaching other inmates about caring for the chickens. “I’m a country boy; it’s what I’ve always done,” says the Myakka City resident, dressed in black and white stripes, a bright orange baseball cap set high above his clear light-blue eyes and perpetually furrowed brow. “And

BLOOMS FROM BEHIND BARS As the inmates in the Manatee County Central Jail’s LIFE program nurse plants to life, they also prepare some of the foliage for sale to the general public. The horticulture program, led by Manatee Technical College instructor Patrick Miller, is geared mostly to feed the jailed inmates, but they also grow potted bushes, annuals and other ornamental plants.

“We have a big poinsettia crop every year,” says Miller, who uses as much of the farm’s acreage as possible. “This year we had 2,800 plants and sold all but 50 of them. And all of that money either goes back into the farm or the Inmate Commissary Fund for toothbrushes, razors, socks and stuff like that.”

While the five horses rescued from neglect in Myakka have made a “massive improvement” after a few months at the Manatee County Jail’s inmate farm, they were so malnourished that it will take months and even years before they will be back in prime condition, says Deputy Garrett Johnson.

That’s a common sentiment among the inmates, but for Berusken, there’s a higher purpose for putting in his time and helping out around the farm: “I’m clearing my karma,” he says with a smile.

In the sewing room, female inmates learn how to make all of the sheets, pillows, uniforms and undergarments used in the jail, while male inmates work in the welding shop and grist mill, where they build signs and fill dozens of 50-pound bags of cornmeal and grits that will later be served in the kitchen.

The hundreds of cows and hogs on the 72-acre farm are raised and later processed by inmates in the jail’s USDA-inspected meat processing plant.

The meat, along with the eggs, vegetables and tilapia raised on the farm as well as the products sewn and built in the program, save the county approximately $500,000 each year.

“All of the cows and hogs and vegetables are used for food in the jail, so we’re not going out and buying it,” says Sheriff W. Brad Steube. “And beyond the cost savings, the point of the program is to keep the inmates busy — keep their minds busy and keep their hands busy.”

Richard Schiavon, a Sheriff’s Office employee, knows all about busy hands, having taught the LIFE sewing class for 15 years. Coming from a family in the women’s garment production industry, Schiavon is a godsend to the program, where he leads the female inmates in producing hundreds of sewn

items every week.

“One of the biggest problems I have is that most of the people I get have very low self-confidence,” he says.

“They’ll say, ‘I can’t do that.’ And I say, ‘Yeah, you can, and you’re going to do it.’”

He sees it all: Adult children of drug addicts, kids who started smoking marijuana at 8 or 9, women who’ve never been challenged to master any skill. “There is hope,” he says. “We start with something simple, give them more challenges, and build up that selfconfidence, until they say: ‘I’ve done that … what else can I do?’”

Schiavon says he’s had former inmates who have gone to school to get interior decorating degrees and now work in the industry. “This program saves the county from having to buy apparel every year,” he says. “And if it changes someone’s life around … well, I don’t know that you can put a price on that.”

CJ Riedel is serving her third sentence for DUI charges. This time, the 42-year-old is serving 364 days. She has a job in Bradenton to go back to and a family of five daughters, two grandsons, a granddaughter on the way and her parents in the area.

Spending time in the sewing room, she says, has helped her to get focused.

“It’s made me more of a bigger person and made me realize I have more responsibilities out there than to just CJ Riedel sews linens to be used at the Manatee County Jail. She says working in the LIFE program has helped go out and have fun and get drunk,” her focus on what she needs to do when she returns to her life outside of the jail.

Working from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. every day “makes your time go faster. You get credit, and you’re doing something productive.”

Inmates who work diligently and stay out of trouble while in the LIFE program don’t get paid for their work, but they can earn as much as 30 days off their sentence. Conversely, inmates who fight, break rules or deviate from their assignments will lose their right to work.

When inmates are booked, Warren says the classification deputy will determine if the inmate is qualified for the program and capable of working or if he or she has any particular skills that would be useful. Several inmates work indoors in laundry or in the kitchens where they prepare meals for fellow inmates or the staff. “Staff dining is one of the best jobs in the whole jail,” Warren says. “They get to eat what the employees are eating. They understand that we’re rewarding them, and that this is a nice plus.”

It’s a far cry from the stereotypical prison job of making license plates.

Modern inmate work programs have evolved substantially, offering vocational training, like LIFE, or even partnering with private companies so inmates can work and earn a wage while serving time or once they’re released. According to studies by the National Institute of Justice, half of inmates remain employed in these types of programs after a year, and up to 80% remain arrest-free for a year after their release.

“The hope is that along the way, the inmates pick something up from one of the individuals teaching them, when they leave the facility and there happens to be a job available …,” Steube says. “We’ve exposed them to skills and hopefully we don’t see that individual back in our facility again.”

TALKING CROSSFIT with co-owner Aaron Weedo: How did you get into CrossFit? For starters, my baby sister and now attorney, Autumn, was already doing it, so I needed to stop doing it in my garage and find myself a “box.”

Then I met two really awesome guys that helped pave my way in the CrossFit world. They showed me the way and provided me with my first “box” experience and showed me what CrossFit was all about. Braden River High School football team has gone from one win in 2012 to one loss in 2015.

The key to the turnaround isn’t a secret: It was good old-fashioned hard work.

urt Bradley walked through his domain, and although no sparks were rising from the production-room floor, a steady din of iron plates slamming together signaled his machine was operating at full force.

Blam ... blam ... blam ... BLAM! This wasn’t a Ford or Chevy plant, and nobody was wearing a hard hat. Rolling off the assembly line in this weight room were athletes.

Having just completed his fourth season as the Braden River High School football coach, Bradley took a system that was broken and fixed it. Well, “fixed it” might be an understatement.

The 7A Pirates, whose only loss in the 2015 season was to eventual state champion St. Thomas Aquinas, 27-10 in the semifinals, have risen from being a team that was nearly winless in 2012 to go undefeated two years in a row in regular season play — in one of the most competitive areas for high school football in America.

Statistics tell much of the story, including a 23-2 record over the past two seasons. The Pirates had 10 games over 40 points in that span, and six shutouts.

Blam ... blam ... blam ... BLAM! But consider the 2012 season when Bradley, the son of former Major League Baseball player Phil Bradley, arrived on campus. The Pirates were shut out five times and the combined score of those games was 201-0. Going 1-9, they scored more than seven points twice.

The Pirates were the joke of the day. How many Pirates does it take to score a touchdown?

Who knows? They never score.

Bradley, who had left his assistant coaching job at Leesburg High School to accept his first head coaching job, wasn’t laughing. The referees would come up to Bradley during games and ask if he wanted to switch to a running clock to end the pain sooner. The former University of Northern Iowa wide receiver and minor league baseball player was concerned.

“I thought we could step right in and compete,” Bradley says.

Zoom forward to the end of the 2015 season and the Pirates had a pair of district title banners and one regional championship trophy in their display case. The 2014 district title and the 2015 regional championship were firsts for the program.

After the Dec. 4 loss to national powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas in the program’s first trip to the Final Four, Bradley had his players right back in the weight room, which has been the key to the rejuvenation. On one recent day, Bradley stopped to watch a pair of 290-pounders, nose guard Deqwunn McCobb and offensive lineman Leo Pita, two linemen who are the future of the program.

The head coach said little as the two players took turns lifting refrigerators, or at least their dead-weight equivalent. He didn’t say much for a couple of reasons. One, his theory is that if you draw up a plan for kids, and they see positive results, they will do it all themselves. The other reason was stationed on the other side of the weight room.

Like Bradley, Braden River offensive coordinator Eric Sanders stood quietly, his head on a swivel as he watched players taking care of their responsibilities.

Sanders is Bradley’s not-so-secret weapon, a guy who finished second in the 2007 balloting for the Walter Payton Award, which goes to the nation’s top Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) player. Northern Iowa’s quarterback from 2004 through 2007, and Bradley’s teammate, Sanders gave up his job as Northern Iowa’s running backs coach to join his friend at Braden River in 2012.

It was a move that some of his peers thought would be a career killer. “A lot of people thought I was stupid,” Sanders says. “But I knew Curt would do things the right way.

I knew he wasn’t going to fail.”

Bradley asked Sanders to oversee the weight-lifting program, which was virtually non-existent before their arrival. Sanders copied the most successful aspects of Northern Iowa’s strength and conditioning program, and the Pirates have been flexing their muscles ever since.

It wasn’t that way when Bradley applied for the job in 2012. Bob Bowling, Braden River’s athletic director who since has retired, told Bradley he faced a major rebuilding job. The Pirates had three coaches in the previous four seasons.

“Dire straits would be a small estimate of what it was like,” Bowling says. “Any principal in the United States will

tell you the same thing. When you have a good athletics program, and especially a football program, you have less discipline referrals, less fights, less problems. When the football program is doing well, everyone jumps on board.”

TOUGH ROAD The Bradley era started in a preseason game against Booker High School, and the new coach faced immediate obstacles. Walking through his home locker room at halftime, he noticed starting offensive tackle, freshman Alex Salguero, had stepped into another room. Bradley went after him, and found him with tears in his eyes.

“Alex had an older cousin on the team, Matt Mckoan, and Alex knew all Matt’s buddies who were seniors,” Bradley says. “Alex was always bigger than everyone else, and even as a freshman he was almost 300 pounds. But he also was extremely weak and that was his first game ever on varsity. He looked at me and said, ‘They are yelling at me. I can’t block that guy.’”

Bradley smoothed things over the best he could, and sent Salguero, who now is headed to Marshall on a Division I football scholarship, back on the field to take a beating. Again, and again, and again.

“I was thrown into the fire,” says Salguero, who is the only current Braden River student who played a varsity role that season. “It was overwhelming. All your teammates expect 110%, so I got screamed at a lot. It is especially tough when it is your cousin doing it. But I didn’t know what I was doing.”

“As bad as it sounds, we had to look ahead,” says the 30-year-old Bradley, who still appears to be in playing shape himself. “We knew we had to lose with those kids.”

After losing to Lakewood Ranch 21-7 in Bradley’s first game with the program, the Pirates were beaten 42-0 by North Port. Worse yet, special teams player Chase Fisher broke a vertebrae in his neck with 30 seconds left.

“They had to take him off on a stretcher and they called the game early,” Bradley says. “It was bad enough that we were losing games, but we were not physically prepared. We were weak and we couldn’t protect ourselves.”

Bowling said he saw good times around the corner. “He was doing things the right way,” Bowling says. “He set the bar high for the kids not just in football, but for them to be good students and good citizens.

He was a young guy with an old-fashioned work ethic. He got those kids to work like dogs.”

Things didn’t turn around that season. The next game they were crushed 40-0 by Palmetto and later they had a three-game stretch where they were ripped 56-0 by Manatee, 35-0 by Bayshore and 28-0

by Sarasota.

The kids hung tough.

“I remember Coach Bradley saying, ‘If you stick with me, we will pull through,’” Salguero says. “After my freshman season, I started the workout program, and coach Bradley was by my side working every day. They taught us that you win through the weight room.”

Danielle McClellan’s son, Ronnie, was a linebacker who played on the freshman team that season. That team was squashed as well, but Ronnie McClellan had faith in the new coaching staff.

“Coach Bradley had a good plan,” Danielle McClellan says. “The kids before had no workout program. They didn’t lift. When the varsity went 1-9, it was disappointing because the kids at Braden River go to the same elementary and middle schools as the kids at Lakewood Ranch. They have to hear, ‘You are terrible’ or ‘You are losers.’ But we believed in what he was doing.”

Tight end/defensive end Ryan Neuzil was on the freshmen team that first season. “At the beginning, I was worried,” he says. “But once we got into our first off-season, I saw the commitment people were making. It’s really not work when you enjoy it.”

Salguero was happy things had changed. “My freshman year there was this girl in my sixth period agri-science class,” he recalls. “She always told me that our team was garbage. There was nothing you could say because what she was seeing was not good.”

The players, by their actions in the weight room and eventually on the field, started to win over their fellow student body. “She actually became a cheerleader,” Salguero says of his classmate who used to rip him.

After that first season, there was no looking back.

Braden River won its first two games of the 2013 season and finished 5-4. They were winners.

With a 4-4 record going into the final game of the season, sophomore quarterback Jacob Huesman took over as the starter. “With Jacob, we could see it coming,” Bradley says. “We had a lot of young players do well in that game (a 27-12 win over DeSoto County). Chase Balliette had two interceptions. The program was working.”

The Pirates beat North Fort Myers 35-32 in the opening game of the 2014 season, rallying from an 11-point deficit in the first half. In the fourth week of the season, unbeaten Braden River rolled into Lakewood Ranch for the rivalry game.

“It was a turning point in our program,” Bradley says. “It was an absolute monsoon, and there was standing water on the field. It was ridiculous, a mosh pit. And our fans were all dressed in white. We were ahead 21-6 (the eventual final score) at the start of the fourth quarter and we went on an eight-minute drive. We didn’t score, but it took the life out of them. The kids were starting to believe and our student section was stirring.”

After four more wins, the Pirates hosted perennial powerhouse Palmetto in a game for the district title on Halloween night. By this time, Braden River games were being shown on the Internet and the stands were packed solid. The Pirates captured their first district title, 38-14.

The Pirates rolled all the way to the Final Four in 2015.

Now it is on to a seemingly bright future, those dark days of 2012 in the rear-view mirror.

“You look back and you don’t want to say it has been unbelievable,” Bradley says. “But it was about as unbelievable as you could get.”

Inspired Living The McAnallen’s Lake Club home is more than just a comfortable dwelling: It’s a showcase for their one-of-a-kind tastes.

e all have our favorite things. Maria von Trapp had raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens. Bud and Nancy McAnallen have a 7-foot-tall memorial brass of Sir Robert De Bures, a knight who lived 765 years ago in Suffolk, England.

The couple — Ohio natives, who moved to Lakewood Ranch in 2002 — acquired the piece in 1986 during a two-year stay in England. The monumental work is much more than just a souvenir hanging in the hallway; it’s a meticulously crafted replica of the second-oldest known memorial brass.

“It was a wonderful reminder of the history of where we were at that time,” says Bud McAnallen, a retired IT sales executive. “For us it offered a sense of melting in with Europe’s past.”

The McAnallens have a unique way of highlighting their past through their stuff. Many of the belongings that fill the couple’s threebedroom Lake Club home have larger-than-life histories. Even the purchase of their lake view lot is steeped in lore. One weekend, after Nancy, a longtime nursing consultant and hospital administrator, returned home from a business trip, Bud took her on a joy ride through the exclusive community.

“What do you think of this lot?” he asked his wife after pulling up to an empty parcel.

“I think it’s nice and well,” Nancy replied.

“Good,” Bud said, “because we own it.”

For decades, the McAnallens kept a file labeled “Retirement Home Must Haves.” Married for 45 years, they had always dreamed of designing a space around their lifestyle, hobbies and favorite possessions.

“In that file, we listed all the things we wished we could have when we grew up,” Bud says. “We put just about every one of them in this house.

Everything in here is a reflection of how we live and what we love.”

At the top of their must-have list was a wine room with enough space to hold at least 400 bottles of wine, including Bud’s prized bottle of vino: a 1997 Far Niente Estate Bottled Cabernet Sauvignon that he received in 2000 as a retirement gift. The couple was so fastidious about designing their wine room that they took a small mockup of their storage racks to Total Wine on University Parkway, where they stacked every bottle they could in the system before giving their contractor the green light. They were equally picky about choosing a countertop for the space, settling on a rustic piece of cypress that “We’re gung ho readers,” Bud McAnallen says. “Before we moved to Florida, we gave at least 500 books to a library in Plano, Texas.”

had weathered underwater for more than 100 years near Gainesville. To brighten the room’s barreled ceiling and stone floor, they commissioned Sarasota artist Judy Eidge to paint a large canvas of purple grapes to serve as a focal point in the middle of the room.

“We have a couple friends who have asked if they could spend the night in our wine room,” Nancy says. “We’ve denied those requests, but we get that it’s a special place.”

Guests frequently pop in and out of the McAnallen’s home. The couple’s spacious office doubles as a library, home to hundreds of titles that friends love to borrow. Their cozy great room doubles as a “concert venue,” where each month a dozen people gather for themed music nights, inspired by the couple’s eclectic music tastes.

Before you get down to earth in your

garden, brush up on these rules for ‘feeding’ your plants in Manatee County.

ertilizer. It’s a dirty topic, but someone’s got to dig into it. In June 2012, Manatee County passed a strict fertilizer ordinance in an effort to preserve our local waters. Four years later, its fine print and specifications are still mystifying local gardeners and landscapers. Whether you’re new to the area or have been tilling up Florida’s sandy soil for years, you should be aware of the rules.

It’s April. Does that mean you’re allowed to shake that bag of nitrogen-based plant food into your vegetable garden? That depends. Is it 50% slow release? Then yes. Just don’t dip into the bag in July or August, when all nitrogen-containing products are banned.

Florida gardening is finicky without having to follow rigorous fertilizer policies, but adhering to the guidelines during the rainy and dry season is a must in Lakewood Ranch — and the law.

At the time of its inception, Manatee County’s ordinance was the strictest in the state. Now other communities — Pinellas County, Sarasota County and the city of Tampa — have followed suit with similar “Florida Friendly” gardening restrictions. To help keep you on solid ground, follow this list of eight do’s and don’ts that apply to turf and landscape applications.

1. DON’T USE NITROGEN IN THE SUMMER.

Nitrogen may not be applied to turf or landscapes between June 1 and Sept. 30, due to the possibility of stormwater runoff into retention ponds and storm drains. A comprehensive list of summer-safe yard fertilizer products is available at mymanatee.org/home/government/departments/parks-and-recreation.html

2. DO USE SLOW-RELEASE NITROGEN IN THE DRY SEASON. All granular fertilizer should contain no less than 50% slow release nitrogen during the nonrestricted season. Look for the terms time release, slow release or controlled release on the fertilizer’s product label.

Continued from Page 82 bris away from stormwater drains, ditches and roadways. Stormwater runoff is the primary reason for the phosphorus and nitrogen embargo. If we didn’t adhere to these restrictions, our waters would be clogged with algae and our fish population would suffer.

3. DO NOT USE PHOSPHORUS ... ... at any time unless you can produce a soil analysis from the University of Florida showing a phosphorous deficiency. If you can prove there’s a deficiency, make sure you file the analysis with Manatee County. (Note: You most likely do not have a deficiency. Companies mine phosphate here.) To avoid inadvertently purchasing fertilizer with the chemical, look for “zero phosphate” on the label. This is the middle number on the fertilizer bag. Good news for container gardeners: potted plants are exempt from this restriction.

4. DO FERTILIZE AWAY FROM WATER. Fertilizer should be applied within 10 feet from the top of the bank of any surface water, wetland or seawall.

5. DON’T FERTILIZE YOUR DRIVEWAY. Keep fertilizer off hard surfaces. If you spill you bag, clean it up immediately and leaf-blow off the excess. Keep grass clippings and landscape de-

7. DON’T FERTILIZE IN INCLEMENT WEATHER. If a severe thunderstorm, flood, tropical storm or hurricane watch is in effect, wait to fertilize.

ontrary to popular belief, there is gain without pain. Novice and veteran tennis players alike can get into the swing of things without suffering from tennis elbow. Regardless of age or ability level, sports injuries can sneak up on you and crush your game.

Strains, pulls and inflammation are equal opportunity fun-busters. Just ask Rafael Nadal, whose knee tendinitis has plagued him on and off the court for years, or No. 3-ranked singles player Garbiñe Muguruza, who was forced to withdraw from several 2015 events due to a lingering ankle injury.

Although there may not be a way to completely rid discomfort, you can diminish pain and prevent injury by simply tweaking your warm-up routine. Here’s how to prevent the three most common body woes.

THWART TENNIS ELBOW WITH A WRIST FLEXOR STRETCH n Extend your arm in front of you, palm up Bend your wrist, pointing your hand toward the floor. n With your other hand, gently bend your wrist further until you feel a mild to moderate stretch in your forearm. n Hold for at least 15 to 30 seconds and repeat two to four times.

TENNIS ELBOW Tennis elbow is an inflammation of tendons in your elbow — specifically the area where the muscles and tendons of the forearm attach to the bony area of the elbow. The scientific term for this standard ailment is lateral epicondyle, which is a mouthful, so let’s just call it what it is: a pain in the elbow. It is generally caused by overuse and isn’t only associated with tennis. Anyone whose work or hobbies require repetitive arm/ wrist movement is susceptible. So yes, you can get bowler’s elbow or golfer’s elbow or gardener’s elbow.

The best way for tennis players to prevent it is to pay attention to the size of their grip, adhere to proper technique and warm up before playing. Simple stretching exercises can make a tremendous difference (see box, left). If you still can’t shake the aches, try wearing a counterforce brace. These braces aren’t cure-alls, but they have been shown to reduce tension on your tendons and for some players, improve grip strength over time — a nice added bonus.

JUMPER’S KNEE

Rotator cuffs are a notorious trouble spot for tennis players.

This group of tendons and muscles connect the upper arm to the shoulder blade. They provide stability and help position the shoulder in the socket. Injury to these muscles and tendons occurs when shoulder muscles get fatigued and move too loosely in the socket, causing no-good friction. Unfortunately, many avid tennis players have weak rotator cuffs, or signs of osteoarthritis and cartilage loss in their dominant shoulders.

You can prevent a lot of wear and tear by flexing and extending your wrist against some light resistance with an exercise band a couple times a week. The most effective strengthening exercises use lower resistance with more repetition.

Frequent massages, coupled with cold and hot compresses will help reduce inflammation.

Jumper’s knee, an overuse injury of the patellar tendon, is a chronic complaint of competitive tennis players. Jumping, sprinting and executing constant lateral moves on a hard court can easily aggravate knees. Stretching your thigh muscles and hamstrings helps ease tension on knee tendons. Swaying lunges and regular low-resistance cycling on flat surfaces enhances muscle strength. Properly fitting shoes are a must — and no, you shouldn’t play tennis in your running shoes.

Tennis shoes have extra support to withstand the game’s quick starts and stops, side-to-side running, jumping and sudden pivots. Before committing to a shoe, you should have your feet and gait analyzed. Do you have a pronated foot (an inward roll of the foot) or a supinated foot (an outward roll of the foot)? Where you play (clay, concrete or grass court) and your style of play should also factor into your shoe shopping.
