Here’s to summer

D

uring summer, as the mercury rises and the time from the last day of school increases, parents will undoubtedly start hearing a phrase that will make them cringe: “I’m bored!”

When we were kids, my brother and I would chime in together with that complaint, which caused our mother to quip that she had a list of chores if we needed something to do.

Although that often quieted us (for awhile), it didn’t solve the problem of what to do with stircrazy children.

Help is on the way. Managing Editor Heidi Kurpiela, herself a mom to a rambunctious and energetic 4-year-old, put together a summer break survival guide (page 44) for all you parents out there.

In it, you’ll find 13 ways to cheaply occupy your offspring over the next

few months, along with tips and tricks only the locals know. From getting early bird discounts to the best fishing ponds, this story will set you up for a successful summer break.

pedigree. Eric Bein, owner and executive chef of Station 400, worked in Manhattan under several well-known chefs, including the youngest chef to receive a three-star review from the New York Times.

Gary Fennessy, owner of Main Street Trattoria, met Ruth Fertel, the founder of Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse when he opened one of the restaurant’s locations in Fort Lauderdale.

You have to read the story he tells about her — quite the character.

And Tommy Klauber, who owns Polo Grill & Bar with his wife, Jaymie, recalls cooking for a baroness in France. Turns out, he was the only one who could make pancakes to her satisfaction. Now that’s skill.

T

he Concession Golf Club will host the 2015 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships May 22 through May 27 and May 29 through June 3.

The club is always looking for ways to showcase its product — an 18-hole par 72 course set on 520 pristine acres in east Manatee County.

But it has to be for the right reason.

Created in honor of one of the greatest acts of sportsmanship to date, in which Jack Nicklaus conceded a putt to Tony Jacklin in the 1969 Ryder Cup, The Concession has been recognized as one of the best and toughest courses in the nation. A large proponent of amateur golf since opening in January 2006, The Concession has played host to the Big Ten Match Play Championship each of the past five years.

Now, The Concession will make history as it prepares to host the men’s and women’s NCAA championships. It’s the first time the tournaments have been played back-to-back on the same course.

“It’s a very big deal,” The Concession Head Golf Professional Chris Dandrow says. “We’re bringing teams and players in from all over the country. It’s great exposure, and we’re looking forward to it in all aspects.”

hen Carrie Betts stepped out as Super Tooth three years ago, Lakewood Ranch events got a little brighter. Festivals, fundraisers, 5Ks, parades and expos were injected with a little more pep, a little more … bite.

Betts was working the Main Street crowd in an oversized tooth costume long before the town’s official “Cranky the Crane” mascot was hatched.

Armed with only a purple cape, a tin grin and a lot of moxie, Super Tooth has managed to outshine all other local mascots, including the Baltimore Orioles bird, the Chick-fil-A cow, the Bradenton Marauders’ bearded pirate and Lakewood Ranch High School’s Klumpy the Mustang.

All other mascots seem dull by comparison, not because their costumes are less

flashy, but because their performances are less jaw-dropping.

“All the things I can’t get away with as a grown woman, I get away with when I’m in that tooth,” Betts says. “I had a dance-off once with SpongeBob and the kangaroo from ‘Bounce Down Under.’ I smoked them both.”

Outside of the costume, Betts, 46, works as the lead clinician at Moricz & Varone Orthodontics of Lakewood Ranch and Sarasota. Inside the costume, she’s

a pearly white powerhouse: part cheerleader, part court jester and part marketing genius. A veteran orthodontic assistant, Betts cut her teeth in the industry more than 21 years ago when she applied to be a receptionist at a dentist’s office in North Port. The dentist was so charmed by her sunny disposition that he hired her on the spot and trained her to be his assistant. She knew nothing about dentistry, other than it made her squeamish.

During her first dental procedure she nearly fainted on the patient.

“Now I love what I do,” says Betts, who has an 18-year-old daughter and a 7-yearold son. “Orthodontics is amazing and interesting. We move teeth. We change smiles.”

When she was hired four years ago to work at Moricz & Varone’s Bee Ridge Road office, the practice’s founding doctors — Dr. Claudia Moricz and Dr. Karen

Varone — didn’t give much thought to a mascot. Betts pitched them the idea after dreaming about it one night.

Varone trusted Betts’ instincts and special ordered a 10-pound tooth costume from an overseas manufacturer.

It was plain and unimpressive, so Betts customized it. She attached braces to the smile, long lashes to the eyes and sewed a purple cape to the back.

“It’s definitely given us some branding,” Varone says. “People look for the tooth. They request it to be at specific events. Carrie has put us out in the community in ways we weren’t before.”

Betts averages about two dozen major events a year, including Sarasota Springfest, Boo Fest, the Ringling Bridge Run and the Lakewood Ranch Health and Wellness Expo. All of these events are carefully documented on Facebook.

Super Tooth is everywhere these days. Betts’ Sarasota neighbors are accustomed to seeing her pull out of the driveway with a molar riding shotgun and “Uptown Funk” shaking the windows on her minivan. (“The tooth loves Bruno Mars,” Betts says.)

Despite her love of glitter and attention, Super Tooth is not a diva. Unlike the Chick-fil-A cow, which has handlers and a battery-operated fan inside its head, Betts doesn’t require much fluffing before events. “I’m like James Brown,” Betts says. “Someone throws me my cape, and I’m good to go.”

C

liff Kaplan has a personal motto about people who have dogs: If you own a dog, you’re an OK person.

As volunteer president of the Paw Park Club, Kaplan has certainly rubbed fur with enough dog owners to make such a statement.

Since acting as the club’s on-again/ off-again president since 2003, Kaplan has met scores of dog owners.

“I’ve never met a bad one,” he says. “(Dog people) are willing to give up time in their day for a dog.

That’s the mark of someone who will take on a major responsibility, especially if they have an active social life. I wouldn’t be surprised if 70% of Lakewood Ranch residents own a pet.”

Kaplan moved to Summerfield in Lakewood Ranch in 2003 after working for 37 years as an eighthgrade earth science teacher on Long Island, N.Y. “It was the career I dreamed of having. I never had a bad day,” he says. “But after 37 years, I had to stop and see what the rest of the world was all about.”

He set his sights on Lakewood Ranch, home to a three-acre Paw Park inside the Greenbrook Adventure Park. When he and his beloved rescue pooch, Jack Daniels, arrived in Lakewood Ranch, the town was what Kaplan refers to as a “precity.” As the community grew, so did the need for improvements at the heavily trafficked dog park.

Kaplan immediately led the pack, stepping up as president of the Paw Park Club and vice president

of the Humane Society of Manatee County.

When Jack died in 2007, Kaplan stepped down as top dog, until 2010, when he adopted Travis, a pit bull/ boxer/Great Dane mix. Kaplan and his 87-pound companion in a Harley-Davidson collar can be found twice a day at Paw Park, where Kaplan monitors the grounds and fields complaints from members.

Under his leadership, the park has developed a routine landscape and maintenance schedule and installed a 6-foot-tall chain-link fence running along Wolf Slough and the Braden River. He’s currently working with the Lakewood Ranch InterDistrict Authority to install a new electronic entrance to help ease dog traffic in and out of the park.

PAW PARK DOs & DON’Ts

“I consider Cliff to be the dog park whisperer,” says Ryan Heise, Lakewood Ranch Town Hall’s director of operations. “He helps with the community conversations and is very diplomatic in doing so. He filters out a lot of the complaints.

He’s an outstanding communicator and a great community leader.”

The well-kept Paw Park is to local dog-lovers what the Mall at University Town Center is to local shopaholics. Its amenities include a doggie drinking fountain, covered sitting areas, trash cans and doggie waste bags.

“We don’t have anything like this up north,” says Steve Hyde, a seasonal Water Crest resident who spends his summers in Delaware with his wife, Lisa, and Harley, their Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever.

“The first thing we joined when we got here was the dog park.”

The Paw Park Club has a whopping roster; 340 members belong to the group. Membership, which grants you access to the park, costs Lakewood Ranch residents $50 a year. Non-residents pay $100.

Each day, Hyde and dozens of other members gather for doggie play dates. Hyde, who owns a financial advising firm, refers to the scene as a dog park “melting pot.”

“We’re all just out there watching the dogs be dogs,” Hyde says.

“It doesn’t matter what your background is. We’re all in dog park clothing and stripped of all the facades that make up our lives.”

The park is like a hound hootenanny in the mornings and late afternoons. Its fields serve not only as a place for dogs to run, but as a kind of dog-lovers water cooler.

“I always say: If you want to know what’s going on in Lakewood Ranch — true or not — go to the dog park,” says Heise, whose department oversees the facility.

Kaplan recently recruited more muscle to help him better the park: Kathy Casey, who lives in Edenmore at the Country Club with her 13-year-old Havanese, Finnegan.

Thanks to Casey the park now has baby pools and toys. The Lakewood Ranch newcomer found that joining the upper ranks of the Paw Park Club set her on the fast track to meeting people.

“I just moved here, and I’ve gotten contacts for a handyman, a plumber and an electrician,” Casey says. “People are so friendly at the dog park.”

ristina Schmidt was just 3 years old when she attended her first ballet class. Her ballet shoes were so tiny they looked like Christmas tree ornaments. At 14, Schmidt is practically a veteran. In 11 years she’s performed in more than 25 local productions and nabbed leading roles in “The Nutcracker” at Diane Partington Studio of Classical Ballet and “Coppélia” at the Sarasota Opera House.

The dancer’s stock is especially hot right now.

This July, she’ll attend a five-week summer intensive program at Tampa Bay Ballet, and next year she’ll complete a five-week intensive program at the Boston Ballet.

Although Schmidt always has her eye on the stage, she still finds time to cram in homework, mostly in between classes and during the hourlong bus ride to and from her home in the River Club. In an interview with LWR Life, the overachiever debunks a couple ballerina stereotypes and gives us backstage intel on the beauty of callused feet.

Q. When did you know you wanted to be a ballerina?

I really knew when I was in sixth grade. I started working harder and realized that hey, this wasn’t a hobby anymore. It was something I put so much time into and was passionate about. I put in more effort and started getting bigger roles in shows.

That really changed what I was doing.

Q. What is one of your favorite leading roles?

Swanilda in “Coppélia.” It’s so comical compared with classical, strict shows like “Swan Lake.” I was just a white swan in that show and had to be very serious. I wasn’t even supposed to smile. My part was all about perfect lines and being refined.

“Coppélia” is odd, but I like it. This time I feel like I can let go and have more fun with my part. I play a doll. It has to be fun.

Q. What is your biggest challenge as a dancer?

The hardest thing is the time commitment dancing requires, and trying to juggle school, dance and other activities. I’ve maintained straight A’s while still going to all my practices and performances, but I’m definitely

doing a lot of homework on the bus. I try to do all my homework before ballet, so I don’t have to do it at 9:30 at night. I get up for school at 6 a.m., go home from 3 to 5:30 and then go to dance practice for a few hours. I’m dancing five days a week.

Q. What ballerina stereotypes are true and untrue?

We’re graceful, focused, poised and have perseverance and self-control, which I think most people probably expect of ballerinas — and we do love dressing up.

It’s fun to wear costumes and makeup to get ready for shows. We work hard.

It’s not true that ballerinas don’t eat. I eat more than a lot of people would think. I’ve also heard people say that ballet is easy and not much of a workout. It’s way more intense than people think. It takes a lot of work and dedication to be a ballerina.

Q. Ballerinas are tough on their feet.

How important are calluses?

They definitely give me some cushion between my feet and the floor. First you get blisters and those are really painful. Blisters harden and become calluses, which make it easier to be on your feet for so long and go into pointe positions. It takes time to get used to aching feet, but you keep going because you love to dance.

Q. Do you have any pre-show rituals?

I keep greeting cards from my friends in my ballet bag. I read the nice things they wrote on them before each show. Some of the cards say how much I’ve grown as a dancer. They’re just Hallmark cards, but what my friends wrote means a lot to me.

I have my ballet shoes, a little sewing kit in case anything rips, hair spray, a comb and bobby pins for a bun, extra tights, a leotard and money. There’s a Dollar Store next to the dance studio, and I get pretty thirsty. It’s a pretty big bag.

Q. What song would you love to dance to?

I love Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud.”

There’s ballet-type dancing in his music video and it’s beautiful. It matches the song.

Q. Why did you start dancing?

I started because my mother wanted me to dance. Every mother wants her daughter to be a ballerina. My mother danced when she was little, too. Then I just started to love it, and I’ve been doing it ever since.

Ballet is a way for me to express myself.

Center for Building Hope This first-rate facility helps cancer patients and their loved ones navigate life after diagnosis.

hen cancer patients turn to the Center for Building Hope, the nonprofit opens its arms like an old friend.

The center functions as a onestop resource shop and sanctuary for people whose lives have been rocked by cancer. With its range of fitness classes, seminars and vast online resource catalog, the organization is largely regarded as one of the best of its kind in Southwest Florida.

Nestled in a beautifully crafted three-story building on a quiet stretch of road off Lakewood Ranch Boulevard, the serene facility is part of a larger network of cancer support systems that spans the globe. Its mission is simple: educate, inspire, comfort and guide people through their darkest hours.

“Our objective is to deliver quality science-based information from leading experts throughout the country,” says Executive Director Carl Ritter. “Doctors don’t have a lot of time to spend with you at an appointment. Here they can. Scientists and doctors lead seminars; they talk to you on recorded videos on our website. They tell you

what’s going on with your body.”

The nonprofit was hatched 19 years ago in a strip mall off Clark Road. In 2010, it moved into its dream home: an 11,000-squarefoot, green-certified building, complete with a courtyard and healing gardens on a five-acre campus.

Since moving into the space, on Communications Parkway, the center has tripled its number of programs and services, thus tripling its number of participants.

“It doesn’t matter how brilliant you are,” says Program Director Andrea Feldmar. “You get a cancer diagnosis and your brain shuts off briefly. We believe the best decisions come from a place of edu-

cation and empowerment and not from a place of fear. We’re here to reduce the sense of isolation that comes with a diagnosis.”

At present, about 3,000 participants take advantage of the facility’s plethora of free programs.

Classes are offered in yoga, belly dancing, watercolor painting, pottery, writing, quilting and more.

Support groups and satellite classes are offered in almost every pocket of Sarasota and Manatee counties.

“We like to say we’re the club no one wants to belong to,” Feldmar says. “But think about how much better you’d feel knowing you’re not alone on this journey.”

The center owes much of its success to its fundraising arm, Brides Against Breast Cancer, which has raised millions of dollars for the organization through the sale of charity bridal gowns. The Sarasotabased agency’s national Tour of Gowns makes headlines each time it rolls into a new city. Since 2002, the program has received more than 50,000 wedding gown donations worth an estimated resale value of more than $4 million. For centuries, picnicking has provided cooped-up families with a breath of fresh air. Lucky for Lakewood Ranch denizens, East County has preserved thousands of acres of green space for this very purpose.

Most parks have a plethora of pavilions and shelters, and unlike getting a booth for five at your favorite restaurant on a Saturday night, these tables don’t fill up fast. The amount of work you’re willing to put into the picnic depends on what you’re hoping to get out of the experience. Remember: this is a leisurely pursuit. You’re eating with Mother Nature, not Wolfgang Puck.

Summerfield Community Park is the perfect hot weather picnic retreat. The 15-acre sanctuary has some of the best shade trees in Lakewood Ranch, plus a meticulously maintained playground, plenty of pavilions, charcoal grills and a newly renovated butterfly garden.

TAKE A HIKE More than 150 miles of trails and sidewalks wind through Lakewood Ranch.

Slip on comfortable shoes, slather the kids in sunscreen, hitch up the dog and pick a path. The trails meandering through Summerfield, Riverwalk and Greenbrook are some of the best.

See why the community won the American Trails Developer Award at the 2008 National Trails Symposium. The system’s mix of soft mulch trails, wood bridges and boardwalks are conducive to little legs and jog strollers.

Start your hike at Riverwalk. Take the Braden River Nature Trail until it runs into Heron’s Nest Nature Park, home to Lake Summerfield and Lake Heron. Once inside Heron’s Nest, you can hop on a walking trail that will take you to Greenbrook Adventure Park. If you’re walking at a leisurely pace and stopping to smell the roses, it should take you about 45 minutes from end to end.

PLAY BALL Burn a few calories and ward off cabin fever by organizing a pick-up game of (almost) any sport of your choice. The 150-acre Lakewood Ranch District Park surrounding Lakewood Ranch High School is the perfect place to make this happen. The park is rich with public amenities, including baseball, football and soccer fields, batting cages and a basketball and racquetball courts. If you’ve got bored teenagers, suggest they invite a few friends over to play beach volleyball at Country Club Community Park, adjacent to the Lakewood Ranch Athletic Center. Tell them to bring a radio and play Siesta Key Beach-style.

CLIMB A TREE One way to keep the kids from crawling the walls this summer is to take them to a place where they can climb the trees. Summer fun is a zip-line away at TreeUmph!, an outdoor adventure park offering visitors the chance to hike, climb and fly above the East County tree canopy.

Remember the library? It hasn’t forgotten you. In the age of Kindles, it’s still fun (and free!) to bring your kids to the library. Unfortunately, there isn’t one inside Lakewood Ranch, but there are two great branches just outside of the community: Braden River Library and Fruitville Library. Both locations offer free children’s programming June through August. In addition to its usual Wednesday morning story hour, Braden River will turn its meeting room and parking lot over to special events Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings.

Magicians, puppeteers, Touch-a-Truck Day, Lego Day and Read-to-the-Dogs Day are all on this year’s summer schedule.

JUMP FOR JOY Turn one small step into a giant leap — all while beating the summer heat — at Jumpin Fun Trampoline Park. Tucked away in an unassuming office park on University Parkway, Jumpin Fun’s main attraction is its 13,000 square feet of “trampoline jumping surfaces,” which we’re pretty sure is the technical term for awesomeness. Twelve bucks buys you an hour and 15 minutes of spring-loaded fun. The park, which opened two years ago in Lakewood Ranch Corporate Park, features areas dedicated to basketball dunking and dodgeball, a foam pit and a rock wall. It’s a perfect venue for birthday parties, where parents often get into the action as much as their offspring, bounding around the arena like Neil Armstrong bopping along the lunar surface. PARK IT AT THE DRIVE-IN The Ruskin Family Drive-In Theatre is a time capsule. It’s a 30-minute drive from Lakewood Ranch, but it’s worth every mile. One of only six drive-ins left in the state, the theater opened in 1952 in a field off U.S. 41, and not much has changed since. Its owner, Ted Freiwald, has lovingly operated the facility since 1977. It’s clean, well run and meticulously preserved in its original state. Families from as far away as North Port and St. Petersburg make visiting it a regular pilgrimage. The 82-year-old Freiwald, who lives in a trailer behind the drive-in’s 2,000-squarefoot screen, operates the theater 365 days a year, rain or shine. His pre-show quips — broadcast over the theater’s old-timey car speakers — have long delighted patrons, many of whom Freiwald knows by name. Even the snack bar’s dollar candies are a throwback to simpler times.

Adult tickets are $6. Children ages 5 to 8 are $1, and children under 4 are free. And don’t forget there’s always a double feature. That’s two movies for less than the price of one! Most showings are family flicks, so load up the kids, turn up the radio and back in the minivan.

Do kids fish anymore? Sure they do — especially in Lakewood Ranch.

Close to 150 children participated in this year’s Youth Fishing Tournament on Lake Uihlein. Home to bass, catfish, sun fish and bluegill, Lakewood Ranch has enough lakes, ponds and fishing holes to keep you and your family in a freshwater trance for hours. Topping the area’s must-fish list is the 160-acre Lake Uihlein, the crown jewel of Lakewood Ranch. If the bass aren’t biting at Uihlein, try Lake Summerfield, Lake Heron, Otter Lake or the aptly named Trophy Lake — currently the best-producing lake in town according to Larry Naddeo, president of the Lakewood Ranch Anglers Club. The most seasoned anglers frequent what they call the “post office ponds” near the post office at State Road 70 and Post Boulevard. Don’t have a fishing license? You can pick one up at the Manatee County Tax Collector’s office, or at a nearby sporting goods store. A license costs less than $10 a year and children under the age of 16 don’t need one.

PLAY INSIDE Indoor play is a must in the summer for two reasons: heat and rain. Spending time in the great outdoors is great if you’re able to dodge afternoon showers and the scary heat index. If you find yourself housebound with antsy toddlers, pop into Play Away at the corner of State Road 70 and Lakewood Ranch Boulevard. The tot mecca, which offers fitness and music classes for small children, has been a rainy day standby for more than a decade. The venue’s open play (Mondays from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Tuesdays from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.) is just $5 and available to members and nonmembers.

PAMPER YOUR CHILD Spa treatments and hair cuts at Lil’ Divas and Dudes Salon & Day Spa off University Parkway will make your little prince or princess feel like a star. Kids sit on fire trucks, racecars and airplanes during their cut and style, while watching a movie of their choice on a small screen in front of the vanity. Spa packages include manicures, pedicures and facials. Parents with daughters: If you really want your little lady to feel like a queen for a day, spring for the $40 Lil’ Diva Dazzle, which includes an up-do with a tiara or funky hair extension, fresh nail polish and makeup.

Despite Lakewood Ranch’s equestrian roots, you have to drive outside of the community to find a ranch that offers horseback riding. Nearby Myakka City is your best bet with its gorgeous oak hammocks, winding country roads and proximity to the untamed Myakka River. Myakka River Ranch and Myakka River Trail Rides offer excursions by the hour for seasoned and novice riders alike. Sixty-minute guided rides start at $45 per person at Myakka River Trail Rides and $90 per person at Myakka River Ranch. Beginner lessons for young and/or inexperienced riders start at $45 at each ranch. Parrish-based Born to Ride LLC leads rides through Myakka River, Alafia River and Little Manatee River State Parks starting at $60 per person for a two-and-a-half-hour ride. RISING STARS

A wave of hot young artists is rocking the Manatee County music scene.

A

slight breeze sighs across Palmetto’s sunny Sutton Park as Lakewood Ranch High School freshman Paige Merriman steps onto an immense stage at the De Soto Seafood Festival.

Sound equipment dwarfs the petite 14-year-old and her Casio keyboard.

She smiles through a cascade of dark blond hair and introduces herself to the sparse crowd. “I’ll be singing a few songs for you guys,” she says.

“My first one will be ‘Crazy in Love’

by Beyoncé.”

Her fingers dance across the keys and in three notes you can tell this isn’t your typical Beyoncé cover.

“You got me sprung, and I don’t care whoooo seeeees,” Merriman growls in a slow, woeful version of the highoctane original. Her powerful voice makes her sound decades older than she is. It slices through the warm spring day. The crowd perks up.

Offstage are the two men who brought her to this moment: her father, Dan Merriman, and her mentor, Del Couch. Dad is the doting roadie who hauls the teen and her equipment to and from gigs. Couch is the quiet coach with the golden touch, Manatee County’s resident star-maker.

Couch, 65, heads the nonprofit Del Couch Music Education Foundation, which operates out of Manatee School for the Arts (MSA). The longtime musician and local record producer gained notoriety last year when he mentored Bradenton teen Sam Woolf

to “American Idol” fame. (Woolf finished in the top five on Idol, casting a national spotlight on Couch’s Palmetto-based foundation.)

Woolf, who graduated last summer from Braden River High School, worked in Couch’s no-cost program for two years before trying out for the show.

He honed his performance chops by singing Friday nights at MacAllisters Grill & Tavern and at local festivals Couch organized to showcase the foundation’s mentees.

Local music-lovers know Couch as the front man of Shaman, a variety band that occasionally lights up First Fridays on Main Street. A gifted trumpet player and longtime Realtor, the Palmetto native hit the road with a brass band right after high school. He spent the 1990s working as a professional musician, playing as many as 200 corporate events a year.

In 2006, he got his master’s degree from Berklee College of Music and found new meaning as a producer after recording a CD for a struggling young Chicano rapper.

Continued from Page 55 “It became kind of a calling,” Couch says. “I started looking for kids who needed help producing CDs.” He connected with MSA, home to some of the area’s most promising undeveloped talent. In 2013, he moved his studio into the school, created a curriculum and built a complete Mac-based studio/classroom with one caveat: He could have 24-hour access to the space and help any kid for free.

Woolf credits much of his budding success to Couch’s foundation. Two years ago he was just a freckled-faced teen with a guitar sharing a stage at local events with Merriman and a bevy of peers. Now he lives in Nashville with fellow Idol contestant Alex Preston and has a five-song EP (“Pretend”) on his resume.

“Every step that Sam takes through a door, it opens another door for all the kids who come after him,” Couch says.

‘IF SAM CAN DO IT … ’ It’s cold and drizzling at Lakewood Ranch’s WinterFest, but that doesn’t stop Matt Walden from melting teenage hearts. At 20, Walden, a four-year veteran of Couch’s foundation, is a seasoned performer with all the makings of a heartthrob: megawatt smile, expertly coifed hair, a healthy amount of swagger and a goofy, easygoing charm.

He saunters across the stage while girls huddle in the front row, cell phones at the ready to snap pictures to share with Walden’s 150,000-plus social media fans.

They’re here because Walden is more than just a pretty face. He plays fiercely, busting the strings on his trusty guitar, singing his face off on crowd-pleasers by Jason Mraz, Weezer and Tom Petty. A classically trained pianist and self-taught guitarist, he learned ’90s alternative rock while sitting around the bonfire with his dad. The set is a

hit. The crowd sings along.

Between songs, the Manatee High School grad further woos the audience by peppering his performance with corny jokes. A middle-aged woman shouts, “You’re awesome!” All the ladies nod. All the men smirk. Whatever “it” is, Walden’s got it.

“It’s kind of crazy because I’m opening for the Doobie Brothers today,” he says. “I never thought I’d be able to say that. Del has just given us such amazing opportunities. I feel so blessed.”

Walden’s social media followers know him for his perpetually upbeat Twitter, Vine, YouNow and SnapChat posts. He’s made appearances at Internet celebrity meetand-greet events all over the South, including CreaTour and JamFest in Florida, but says he’s shying away from these engagements to focus on his music. His first official single, “Flipped the Script,” was released May 16 on iTunes, set to be followed by a 10-song EP later this summer.

“Del knows people in every state,” says James Walden, Matt’s father. “He has the promotion ability. He can mix. He can help them write. He gives them production time that you can’t get unless you have a studio at home. He has ideas

of where he wants Matt to go.”

In the weeks that follow his WinterFest performance, Walden books dozens of gigs at local restaurants and starts looking for out-of-state shows to play over the summer.

Like a lot of young singer/songwriters, he uses YouTube to reach his listeners, uploading acoustic renditions of radio-friendly hits. On the first day he posted a cover of Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” he nabbed 1,000 views.

Says Walden, “When Sam Woolf made it big I was like, if a kid in our town who literally has the same taste as me in music can make it big, I might actually have a chance to do this.”

AN IDOL COMES HOME It’s early March and Woolf, 18, leans back in a comfy dining chair in a private room at Polo Grill and Bar. Dressed in a plain white T-shirt with his hair slicked back, he’s every inch a young rock star who’s been to Hollywood and back — until he speaks.

His soft voice, shy smile and polite phrasing give him away. Idol or not, he’s still a sweet Florida boy who seems more than stunned by the last 12 months.

On “American Idol,” his James Taylor-like crooning and One Direction-type looks kept him in the competition for weeks and earned him a spot on the U.S. “American Idol” tour with his fellow top 10 contestants.

His insta-stardom was a whirlwind.

“I don’t even remember half of it, honestly,” says Woolf, who was raised by his grandparents in Bradenton. “Throughout the whole thing I grew a lot. It was an awesome experience, probably one of the best I’ve ever had.”

Today the teen makes regular trips to Bradenton to visit his grandparents and to headline events such as WinterFest and the Seafood Festival. These hometown gigs, however, aren’t just platforms for Woolf’s career. Couch’s other protégés are getting their chance to shine, too. During WinterFest, for example, executives from Live Nation flew down from Michigan to hear Woolf play. “And guess what?”

Couch says. “They heard the other kids, too.”

Despite his meteoric rise, Woolf says he’s missing one key industry ingredient: a manager. He still relies on Couch to book his gigs and dole out advice.

“I used to be scared just to sing in front of my family,” Woolf says.

“Now, my ultimate dream is to put my music out to as many people as I can.”

Couch’s dream team continues to grow with Merriman, Walden and a steady influx of other gifted artists, including 10-year-old singing sensation Gabriel “The Storm” Jarrett, an IMG Academy tennis student who has performed in Las Vegas, on cruise ships and “The Wendy Williams Show.”

University Park resident Raven Chapman, 17, earned an internship with Couch a year and a half ago and is now the studio’s main producer. She worked on Walden and Merriman’s CDs, among others. Although she had limited experience with studio tools and technology, Chapman has become a production whiz under Couch’s tutelage.

Brooke Bonderer, an effervescent 19-year-old from a small town in Missouri, immediately benefited from Couch’s clout and training.

Within a year of moving to Braden-

ton she was booking gigs around town and laying down tracks with Walden in Couch’s studio.

“Through Del I’ve connected with this place,” Bonderer says. “He exposed me to his circle of people.

People started knowing my name.”

A NEW STAR IS BORN Back at Sutton Park, Merriman is belting out the final chorus to “Crazy in Love.” The breeze seems to pause as if to hold the singer’s last few notes. The crowd that has been milling aimlessly through craft booths and pondering fried shrimp stops to listen, their gaze fixed on the stage.

The singer is unaware of her spell, too lost in the song to notice.

When her ballad comes to an end, the crowd erupts into unbridled applause. Merriman looks down and lets out an embarrassed giggle.

“Thank you,” she exhales.

“Paige has the talent,” Couch says. “She writes her own songs.

She plays an instrument. She sings well and has an image that people like. She’s a little bit of an introvert, but through her music she’s able to express her feelings. That’s the kind of student we look for.”

Merriman, who has an EP of cover songs available on iTunes, is still

weighing the pros and cons of auditioning for a TV talent show. Baring your soul in front of millions of viewers on “American Idol” or “The Voice” is a nerve-wracking trial-byfire. Nonetheless, Merriman says she fantasizes about seeing her name in lights one day.

“I always imagine tens of thousands of people in an arena who came to see me,” she says. “They’re all cheering for me and it’s the best feeling ever.”

ong before “farm to table” was a buzzword and organic food was touted as the panacea to our diet woes, Sarasota chef Eric Bein was spending summers on his great-grandparents’ farm in the Hudson Valley region of New York. The oldest of four boys, Bein, 33, relished the farm experience.

He would pick apples and pears, cherries and peas, and help his great-grandfather weed the garden and his great-grandmother can beets. He can recall with vivid detail how she would use her stockings to strain the seeds out of her raspberry jam — an old trick she picked up during the Great Depression.

“They taught me that food doesn’t just come from the grocery store,” says Bein, who’s married with two daughters.

“It comes from the earth.”

The son of a stay-at-home mom and general contractor, Bein’s parents encouraged him to study finance, but Bein wanted to be a chef. He graduated from the Culi-

nary Institute of America and spent his early 20s working in Manhattan under A-list cooks, including Marcus Samuelsson, the youngest chef to ever receive a three-star review in The New York Times.

After six years of sweating it out in New York’s pressure-cooker kitchens, Bein moved back home and opened his own bustling cafeteria, Station 400, a breakfast/lunch nook in the historic train depot on Lemon Avenue in downtown Sarasota.

At the suggestion of one of his East County regulars, he opened a second location in 2011 in the old Serving Spoon diner on Main Street in Lakewood Ranch. The community’s stalwart brunchgoers immediately rejoiced.

“It was a conscious move,” Bein says of his decision to move into an already established space. “If you open somewhere brand new, you’ve gotta sell a lot of bacon and eggs to recoup your investment. The location was perfect and the crowd was stable. It made sense from the start.”

ane Kim is no stranger to working under pressure. In 2008, just three months after the birth of her son, Kim, 31, and then-husband Daniel Dokko opened Jpan, an Asian fusion restaurant and sushi bar in Sarasota. The economy wasn’t hot, nor was the restaurant’s location: the corner of a nondescript shopping plaza off South Tamiami Trail.

The Tampa native was only 25 and admittedly in over her head when Jpan opened its Sarasota location. Customers would often catch her waiting tables with her son on her hip. When the restaurant got slammed, regulars would offer to hold the baby.

“It was a challenging time,” she says. “I think the customers saw how hard we were trying

and wanted to support us.”

Kim had no idea how supportive her customers could be until she decided to fly solo in 2014. After splitting from her husband and business partner in 2014, she changed Jpan’s Lakewood Ranch location into Hana Sushi Lounge.

In a nod to her newly unmarried status, Kim started offering girls’ night out drink specials ($3 sake bombs, $4 plum martinis and $5 Pom Awakening martinis) on the last Thursday of every month.

“A lot of my customers have been with me from the beginning,” Kim says. “They’ve followed my journey from married new mom with a restaurant to single mom with a restaurant. I’ve needed them more than they know.

They’ve been my backbone.”

f you haven’t seen the new-and-improved confections at Pastries by Design, you must bring your sweet tooth by the cookie counter. New owner Alejandra “Alex” Hernandez has been up to her elbows in flour since taking over the business in March.

Hernandez, 45, arrived in Lakewood Ranch after spending most of her life in Barcelona, Spain, where she still owns a gourmet cookie and cupcake shop called Bake & Fun. Like the late-blooming chefs and bakers who came before her, Hernandez pulled the plug on a tedious desk job to pursue her passion for food. A graphic designer, she spent the first half of her career crafting digital media projects for big-name clients in Spain and Holland, including Formula 1 sponsors.

Hernandez grew up in Mexico, baking alongside her mother and sisters. Eager to start over somewhere with “fresh country air,” she relocated this spring to Lakewood Ranch with her family and a fat recipe book of signature cookies, fondant masterpieces and organic cakes and muffins.

“It’s more rewarding than graphic design,” Hernandez says. “I once prepared a dragon cookie for a little boy at a farmers market back home in Spain. You should have seen the look of joy on his face as he ate it.

It was the most beautiful thing in the world to watch.”

hen you walk into Gary Fennessy’s Main Street Trattoria, you feel a little like you’ve walked into Billy Joel’s “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant.”

It has all the makings of a New York-style date night, complete with veal Parmigiana, hefty meatballs, tomato gravy and live piano music.

Fennessy, 61, is just as old school. A New Jersey native, he spent his summers on the Jersey Shore, cooking for an old Sicilian man named Mr. Tony, who spoke little English. He pursued a career in social work, but went back to waiting tables after six grueling years making calls in seedy neighborhoods outside of Newark.

“The hospitality industry was in my blood,” Fennessy says.

He ran his South Street Trat-

toria for 13 years in Morristown, N.J., where he frequently catered to headlining acts at the nearby Mayo Performing Arts Center.

He moved his wife and four kids to Lakewood Ranch eight years ago, just as Main Street was filling up with commercial tenants. The first time he saw his Main Street Trattoria, the restaurant was still cinder blocks. Fennessy, who opened the restaurant five years ago, designed the space from the ground up, with half of it dedicated to outdoor dining.

“It’s exactly what I had envisioned,” he says. “People walk by with their dog, take a seat outside, listen to live music and order a glass of wine and a pizza. It’s been a very easy place to have a restaurant.”

W

hen Ronald Kuroiwa took over El Lago Ranchero last summer, he renamed the Mexican restaurant Casa Maya and immediately turned up the heat on the menu. His house specialty, the molcajete (a loaded fajita for two in a towering stone bowl) brought authenticity to the restaurant’s standard Tex-Mex fare. The dish, which Kuroiwa perfected when he worked as a cook at a Mexican restaurant in Bradenton, has singlehandedly raised the profile of the cozy cantina.

Success, however, didn’t happen overnight for the 44-year-old.

A trained electrical engineer, he juggled three jobs before taking over Casa Maya. For 10 years he cleaned

apartments in Lakewood Ranch and did odd electrical jobs on the side.

The plan had always been to own a restaurant, but that plan fizzled when Kuroiwa moved 13 years ago from his native Bolivia to Bradenton to help his sister run an American-style breakfast diner.

(The business lasted only one year.)

This time it’s different, says Kuroiwa. This time the people in Lakewood Ranch are starting to notice the difference in their enchiladas.

“I’m working a lot,” he says.

“I’m the cook, the dishwasher, the food runner and the janitor.

People don’t understand how I’m still smiling. I tell them, ‘I’ll relax when my restaurant grows up.’”

Albert Myara and Bob Bender partnered to buy the restaurant about a year and a half ago.

W

hen Bob Bender moved to Lakewood Ranch last year, he got lucky when his Realtor suggested he contact Albert Myara for business advice.

Myara, a longtime Lakewood Ranch resident, is a restaurant and real estate heavyweight with two sports bars to his name (Bogey’s Restaurant & Sports Pubs in Bradenton and Venice) and commercial projects scattered all over East County. (He’ll break ground this summer on The Lakeshore, a luxury condo complex on Main Street).

A former commercial broker for Schroeder-Manatee Ranch, Myara’s clout and history in the area made him a natural business mentor for Bender, a Friendly’s franchisee with seven locations in Pennsylvania.

Over burgers and beer one night at Bogey’s in Bradenton, Myara and Bender had their

first of several discussions about purchasing Ed’s Tavern from its original owner, John Breiner.

“I had been going to Ed’s since it opened,” Myara says. “I knew 90% of the people in the restaurant.

It’s the neighborhood Cheers.”

The duo struck up a conversation with Breiner, who had become a fixture on Main Street thanks to Ed’s popularity.

“We talked about it for a couple weeks until we figured out something that worked for all of us,” Bender says.

They only knew each other a short while before they closed on the property in February 2014.

“We’re not fighting yet,” Myara jokes.

Save for a slight facelift, new televisions and the addition of craft beer from Bradenton’s Darwin Brewing Co., Ed’s is still a “Jersey joint in Lakewood Ranch,” as Breiner dubbed it in 2009. Much to the delight of locals, the new owners didn’t rename the watering hole, alter the burger-heavy menu or raise the price of the beloved $1.50 Budweiser draft.

“It was already a nice-running operation,” Bender says. “Our goal was to build upon its success, and that’s worked fantastic for us so far.”

rancophiles in Lakewood Ranch have long touted Paris Bistrot’s savory crêpes and French manager Christopher Nebra’s gentle manners. One of the original Main Street eateries, Paris Bistrot is every bit the European café on a corner. Manned by Nebra, a native Parisian with a warm smile and charming accent, the cozy bistro is one of a handful of Florida-based French restaurants owned by Nebra’s father-in-law, Olivier Rose.

Rose, who spends most of his time in South Florida running his Miami café, persuaded Nebra to move from Paris to Anna Maria Island five years ago to manage Paris Bistrot and Island Creperie, on Anna Maria Island.

As soon as he settled in Florida, the 37-year-old made it his life mission to assume what he calls “the American way of life.”

“Lakewood Ranch is the perfect allAmerican town,” he says. “I leave my convertible down and I don’t have to worry about anything happening to it. You walk around with a very nice peace of mind here. You couldn’t do that in Paris.”

t’s not easy being the new kids on the block, but Greg and Tina Bliss make it look easy. After spending 25 years serving ItalianAmerican fare to country folks in northern Vermont, the restaurant veterans ditched their rural roots last summer and shopped for a new restaurant in Lakewood Ranch.

When they learned that Malcolm and Karen Ronney were looking to offload MacAllisters Grill & Tavern, one of the oldest restaurants on Main Street, they decided to buy the business. The fact that the Blisses honed their chops in pizza kitchens and MacAllisters was a Scottish pub didn’t seem to faze either couple.

“Food is food,” says Greg Bliss.

“No matter the restaurant, it’s all about keeping your customers happy and your employees happy.”

The Blisses met in a pizza parlor

when they were 16 years old. Greg is a self-proclaimed dreamer, a risk-taker and behind-the-scenes visionary. Tina is a realist, a people-pleaser and a rock-solid front-of-the-house multitasker.

As 20-somethings they opened their first pizza place — Hoagie’s Pizza & Pasta — in 1996 with eight employees and 50 seats in their tiny hometown near the Canadian border. In eight years, they grew the business to five locations, two of which they still own.

They took over MacAllisters in January. The transition went so smoothly most regulars barely noticed, even with the addition of Vermont maple salad (below) to the specials menu.

Says Tina, “The only thing we can’t duplicate right now is (the Ronneys’) wonderful Scottish accent.”

akewood Ranch’s A-list loves the Polo Grill & Bar. Tommy Klauber cooks a mean rack of lamb and Jaymie Klauber caters hundreds of soirees a year. They’re an industry power couple with a lot of personality, clout and grit.

Their Polo Grill, which opened in 2007, is the largest venue on Main Street. Thanks to a spacious ballroom and four private dining rooms, the restaurant has become a hotspot for corporate events, wedding receptions, fundraisers and more.

“We always wanted it to be kind of like the living room of Lakewood Ranch,” says Jaymie.

Eighteen years ago, Jaymie, 48, was working at the Jewish Community Center in Sarasota when she met Tommy, 56, at his family’s Longboat Key landmark, The Colony Beach & Tennis Resort. Tommy, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, had just opened Pattigeorge’s Fine Coastal Cuisine on Longboat Key when he asked the plucky Manhattan native out on a date. The couple was married three years later.

In 2007, the Klaubers purchased a ranch in the Polo Club (to lodge Jaymie’s horses) and a restaurant in the village (to lodge Tommy’s East County fan base).

“There’s more competition now,” Tommy says. “There’s no resting on our laurels or thinking now is the time to get comfortable. We work hard. Polo Grill is a big place, and we’re just two people.”

t’s rare to find a home in Florida without a pool. A 2006 study by researchers at Florida State University estimate there are more than 1 million residential pools in in the state — with more cropping up each year. Most of those chlorinated retreats are of the typical small, round or square variety with the requisite hot tub.

Few are as vast or lavish as the pools in The Concession or The Lake Club.

With these communities’ abundance of big, beautiful homes come stunning patios, luxe outdoor furniture and an equally cush lifestyle. Pull up a folding chair and rub in some sunscreen. These are the kind of pools you lounge by in your dreams.

ELIZABETH AND MIKE STONE As a native Floridian, Elizabeth Stone is no stranger to pools, but even she was initially taken aback by the one she now has at her home in The Concession.

“It makes me feel like I’m at a hotel,” she says. “The best part for us is the fact that it looks like you’re somewhere else. It doesn’t look like the average pool in your mom’s backyard.”

The family moved to Lakewood Ranch from Peoria, Ill., last June. Their Illinois home had a swanky pool, which Stone says set the bar high when they began shopping for a place in Lakewood Ranch. They immediately fell in love with the Ritz-caliber pool and patio at their home in The Concession. Sprawling pool?

Check. Wading pool? Check. Spa? Check.

The major benefit of this pool, as compared with the one in Illinois, is that it can be used for more than just a few months each year.

“When I send pictures of it to my friends in snowy Illinois, of course they’re jealous,” Stone says. “They say it looks like a resort, and they immediately want to fly down.”

The couple and their 15- and 16-year-old children are in the backyard daily, but the family member who goes for the most dips is Bradley the cockapoo. According to Stone, it’s a fight just to get him out of the wading pool.

BARBARA AND JOE NAJMY Lake Club resident Barbara Najmy took her courtyard on the ultimate test run just three months after moving in. She hosted a dinner for 80 guests under a giant outdoor tent to celebrate her father-inlaw’s 80th birthday. The party was a remarkable success.

At 4,600 square feet, the Najmy’s Tuscan villa is certainly spacious enough for a large party, but the sprawling outdoor patio and pool are what take most people’s breath away.

The pool, which is set away from the house out an impressive set of French doors, is surrounded by 2,500 square feet of pavers — more than half the size of the entire house. The space, which is equipped with an outdoor kitchen, complete with a Viking grill and U-Line refrigerator, is accessible via the master bedroom and three additional guest suites.

Najmy and her husband, Joe, a local attorney, moved into the house two years ago, after raising their two kids in nearby River Landings on the Braden River.

“We wanted to create a home that felt like a resort,” Najmy says.

“That way if we don’t want to take a vacation, we can always take a staycation. You lock all the doors, call in dinner and a massage and you feel like you’re at a true Tuscan villa.”

SHERYL AND JEFF ISAAC When Sheryl and Jeff Isaac were looking for the perfect pool and outdoor area, they wanted it to have a certain je ne sais quoi quality.

In 2009, they moved into their custom-built Lake Club home and transformed the backyard into an elegant French oasis, complete with stone and marble finishes and grand French doors.

“I’m an interior designer, so I considered everything I liked,” Sheryl Isaac says. “We looked around. I got my ideas and finally settled on this.

Everyone loves the property.”

A roof covers half of the patio. If you step outside the Isaacs’ living room, you end up in an equally sumptuous outdoor living space with a couch, glass table and chandelier.

Walk a little farther and the patio gives way to an uncovered pool and hot tub that functions as a water fountain when it’s not in use.

“The roof covers the whole upper area from all the rooms,” Isaac says.

“You can have the shade or you can have the sun.”

The space reminds the family of the French countryside, but with a

modern twist. It has a built-in stereo system and a TV near the kitchen.

The Isaacs’ five children — ages 17 to 24 — love to entertain around the pool. The area is large enough to accommodate 100 guests plus a band; the family has hosted enough raucous pool parties to know.

Mostly though, Isaac says the backyard is a place to unwind, reflect and enjoy one another’s company. In the evening, they’ll sometimes gather out back to catch the sunset.

“It’s so tranquil,” she says. “It’s like make believe. It really is a dream, even today. It never gets old.”

id you know that roses are actually in the same family as apples?

It’s true — they are in the family Rosaceae, and there are more than 100 species of roses. Some can be short shrubs, while others can be climbing with stems that are often armed with sharp prickles (every rose has its thorn). The earliest known cultivation of roses goes back to at least 500 B.C. in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Old garden roses (varieties that trace their heritage before 1867, also called “antique roses”) and shrub roses thrive with minimal care. These easy-to-grow types produce more open and informal blooms compared with what you would see in a florist’s shop, such as hybrid tea, grandiflora,

floribunda and polyantha roses.

These “modern roses” demand frequent grooming, fertilizing, watering and spraying to provide their desired blooms.

Here in Florida, hybrid roses grafted on Fortuniana rootstock (Rosa fortuniana, Double White Cherokee) grow larger, are more vigorous, produce more flowers, and live much longer than plants grown on any other rootstock. Plus, they are not susceptible to nematodes.

Mrs. G.F. “Katy” Lampkin of Palma Sola here in Bradenton is credited with introducing and further developing this rootstock in the 1950s. She was also the first president of the Bradenton Rose Society, established in 1959.

Selecting which roses to plant of course depends on your preference for flower color, fragrance and shape.

Some roses make attractive landscape plants; some produce beautiful cut flowers, and some, like the miniatures, mini-floras, and patio roses, readily adapt to small spaces or containers.

Local rose societies like the Bradenton - Sarasota Rose Society (www.B-SRS.org) can provide you with a wealth of information on which roses perform best in your area. The B-SRS website has a large gallery of roses, providing photos and descriptions and sources for 315 roses that will grow well in this area.

One piece of advice: When you discover what you want, learn how to plant and care for them before you buy! A good potted rose grafted on Fortuniana root stock will cost about $25.

THINGS TO DO Meet friendly folks who love and know a lot about roses at the the Bradenton-Sarasota Rose Society. It holds meetings usually on the fourth Sunday of each month January through June and September through December at the Phillippi Estates Park in Sarasota. Dates can vary, so be sure to check the B-SRS events calendar on its website. Each month an educational program is presented and members are able to ask American Rose Society (ARS)-certified consulting rosarians questions about rose gardening or problems with their plants.

Tips for care PLACEMENT  MONTHS TO PLANT. You can plant roses anytime of the year here except July and August.  SUNLIGHT. Roses need direct sunlight for at least six hours a day. A semi-shaded location that supplies morning sunlight is second best. They like southern or eastern exposure.

Dangerously high temps can result in heat-related illnesses, ranging from heat cramps to heat exhaustion and even heat stroke. Simple tweaks here and there can have a profound effect on how long you last on the green in the Sunshine State.

WHEN TO PLAY

The easiest way to stay cool is to alter your tee times according to the heat index. Early mornings or late evenings are your best bet in the summer.

Buy a small battery-operated fan and keep it with you in the golf cart. Some golfers swear by these little handheld gadgets. They’re cheap, portable and help circulate the stagnant summer air. If you’re not afraid of a little water, I suggest also keeping a spray bottle in your cart. A little spritz between holes is refreshing and practical. Your head and neck are quick cooling spots.

THE MAGIC OF WATER

Keep water bottles in the freezer and grab one before you go. As the ice melts, you’ll continue to have a frigid supply of drinking water.

Speaking of water, I learned this little trick from a tennis pro: If you’re wearing a cap, remove it and pour a bit of ice-cold water into the hat, quickly invert it and place it back on your head. It’s a rush.

Combat dehydration by drinking plenty of water, along with sports drinks loaded with electrolytes. Avoid caffeine and alcohol. They’re the fast track to dehydration. Don’t eat a large hot meal before teeing off, either.

Reach for lighter fare instead: cold fruit, small sandwiches, a cup of yogurt and a handful of granola.

CHILL OUT

As tempting as it is to jump in a nearby pond to cool off, there are much more effective (alligator-less) measures.

Companies are continually coming out with cooling devices; some are more gimmicky than others.

Some of my favorite products are cooling towels and chilling hats.

At the top of that list: Frogg Toggs Chilly Pad Towels and Chill-It Ranger Hats, both of which you activate by submerging in water.

It is better to be wet than hot.

I’ve had the privilege of having heat stroke just once. Believe me, once is all you need. I made the cardinal golfing mistake. I mixed alcohol with golf at a fundraising tournament, which we all know is par for the course at such events.

After hole 12, I knew I was in trouble. I was feeling faint, queasy and clammy. I could hardly stand, let alone hit a ball. I ended up sitting in a golf cart with an ice-packed towel on my head. Not fun. Remember: A cooler is your best golf accessory.

When the game is over, head home for a chilly shower and an icy glass of lemonade. For the ultimate cool down, store your body wash, lotions and cosmetics in the refrigerator.

Slather these on after a long hot morning on the course and you’ll feel like the coolest golfer under the sun.

SUN SAFETY 101 n The ideal sunscreens use a physical block, rather than a chemical block. Look for lotions that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. If you can’t stand chalky, mineralbased sunscreens, use lotions with at least 5% micronized zinc oxide, which is more aesthetically pleasing. n Wear a hat. Crushable ventilated golf hats take up zero space in your golf bag. n Cover up your skin.

Breezy, long-sleeved linen shirts, pants and skirts provide sun protection and ventilation. n Wash your Bermuda shorts with SunGuard, an inexpensive laundry aid that adds SPF 30 to each load of laundry. n Stand in the shade.

Once your turn is over, find a spot under a tree where you can wait.

Don’t fry your face on an open green.

Lakewood Ranch mother-of-two Heather Perry takes her summer break survival skills on a cheap test run.

hen I moved to East County 11 years ago from Washington, D.C., I was looking for a place that provided lots of family activities. Lakewood Ranch is the perfect solution, but as the kids got older and life got busier, I seemed to lose sight of this fact.

So I decided to institute a mandatory weekend of family fun, with an extreme challenge element added: Do it without spending any money.

The next morning I hopped out of bed excited for this quest. I roused my 11-year-old daughter, Cameron. She sprung out of bed with anticipation.

My 13-year-old son Connor reluctantly followed me into the kitchen. (OK, it was after I opened his blinds, turned on his lights and pulled off the sheets he was holding over his head.)

Over a smoothie breakfast we mapped out the day. First on the agenda: Collect seashells. Sound corny? Think again. The kids dug it.

Our first stop was Shell Beach — a little-known stretch of shoreline on Siesta Key where locals go to escape the tourists. (I’m almost afraid to divulge the location of this hidden gem: about a mile over the north bridge, at the end of on a sandy street called Shell Road,

but you didn’t hear it from me.)

Shells line the beach at low tide, which means the best time to score cool ones is in the morning. We used a small bucket and a sifter to collect our bounty.

Continued from Page 80 At home, we gathered everything we’d need to make the quintessential Florida arts-and-crafts project: shell picture frames. We soaked our collection in a 50/50 solution of bleach and water, followed by a quick blow-dry and a mineral oil rubdown. (This gives the shells a shiny straightfrom-the-souvenir-store look.)

I found some Krazy glue and a box of old picture frames, in which I discovered a snapshot of one of my husband’s old girlfriends. (Sleuthing and crafting at once! One point for wife!)

I let the kids each choose a frame. I picked the one with the ex-girlfriend’s mug, covering every square inch of the photo with large, never-to-be-removed-againlest-you-wish-to-unleash-mywrath seashells. My daughter followed suit with smaller shells, and my son, ever the rebel, painted his aqua and glued a solitary cluster

of shells to the bottom. They turned out adorable, and now we have the perfect homemade gifts for grandma and grandpa. (One point for the daughter-in-law!)

The next morning, we started our day in a similar manner, except this time we stayed closer to home, driving out to Nathan Benderson Park for a game of kickball with some family friends.

Do Lakewood Ranch residents know how lucky they are to have this enormous park at their disposal? It’s gorgeous.

We found a spot with plenty of grass to play kickball, which

I’ll admit was probably not the best place to kick a ball. The game went off without a hitch until my son unleashed one of his turbo kicks and booted the ball into the water, prematurely ending our game. Hey rowers: If you come across a small red kickball in the lake, please return it to the Perry residence.

Undeterred by a lost kickball, we continued our no-frills escapades with a “Leave It To Beaver”-style picnic and fishing trip.

We walked over to a small lake, otherwise known as a pond to northerners. We checked the shoreline for alligators.

When we saw none, we parked ourselves under a shade tree and let the bonding begin.

My husband, Nathan, the outdoorsman, was excited to

show the kids some new casting techniques. They dutifully followed his lead and politely stifled their giggles when everyone but him caught a fish. Because Lakewood Ranch has a catchand-release policy, we returned our game to its watery domain, which was fine by me because I’m a wuss who cannot eat a critter after it’s looked at me.

I cherished our time fishing. It was relaxing and uncomplicated.

I reconnected with my family and chatted with people who passed by walking their dogs. We met new neighbors. I rekindled my appreciation for Lakewood Ranch, which had waned in the grind of everyday life. I remembered why I moved here in the first place. And, best of all, it didn’t cost me a cent.
