Lakewood Ranch celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. It broke ground on its first community, Summerfield, in 1994.

A

h, 25. Let’s face it: It’s not one of the most fun birthdays you’ll ever have, like 16, or 18, or, of course, the infamous 21.

But it’s definitely a milestone nonetheless. Twenty-five says: You’ve made it. You’re an adult.

Sort of.

At least, at 25, we can say you’re not a kid anymore.

You’ve grown up and you have more responsibility now. People expect things from you. They rely on you.

It’s also the age of so much unlocked potential. You’ve gotten those ugly growing pains out of the way (braces, acne, etc.) and you’ve emerged as a clearer, more focused version of yourself. In essence, we can see who you are — your personality, your values, your ambitions.

Although Lakewood Ranch is not a person, and never got a driver’s

license or voted for the first time or had acne for that matter, it definitely has been busy growing. And in many ways, the community has gone through the same process of growing up that we do.

In the beginning, it was hard to see what would grow out of those miles of cow pastures and timber stands.

It wasn’t always apparent how everything would come together and fit and function in this community that at the time seemed like it was so far east from everything else (according to Sarasotans, anyways).

But look at it now ... burgeoning, blossoming, gelling. It has grown up into quite the beauty.

So, rather than looking back on Lakewood Ranch’s history from the past 25 years, we decided to focus on that beauty and embrace what we love about it now. We wanted to celebrate its 25th birthday with all the things

that make it great (see Page 60).

From its parks, nature and green spaces to its shops, restaurants, events and clubs, it was hard to narrow it down to just 25 things. Really hard.

Which just goes to show that the community is everything it was planned to be: an attractive, cohesive place with a strong identity.

The other important thing about turning 25, is it’s less about where you’ve been, and more about what’s to come.

For Lakewood Ranch, there’s a lot left to come. In fact, it’s just a little more than halfway to its planned development. So just imagine all the things we have to look forward to.

That’s maybe the best thing about being 25.

wo days before Grove’s opening, Executive Chef Greg Campbell realized there was custom art missing from the wall.

“I set up a table in the middle of the dining room and got some wood glue,” says Campbell, who had been saving wine corks over the years. “I sketched a quick design on the frame and started gluing.”

An hour in, Campbell realized although he was a bit shy of corks, he’d gained an audience.

“Within a half-hour, two of the new servers, who had just completed training, were bringing in trash bags full of corks from their houses.”

The servers grabbed the glue and four hours later the piece was complete.

The 1,500-cork installation hangs beside the new service bar — a visual testament to the teamwork, drive (and wine consumption) required to transform the former Polo Bar and Grill into Grove in four months.

“It’s all been a team effort, everything we have done from the onset of the project,” says Campbell.

During the renovation, the Grove team kept the design details of the multimillion-dollar renovation hushhush. But when Grove opened Dec. 10, it revealed no less than a jaw-dropping makeover.

“The old space was restrictive, as far as walls were concerned,” says Campbell. “We wanted enough elements to keep attention inside but still have it Continued on Page 28

Campbell, who acted as the general contractor, spared no expense on the custom renovations, choosing durable, high-quality materials and implementing upgrades to everything from gas lines to baseboards (which, by the way, are stainless steel).

“We are going to be here for 30 years and need it to last,” says Campbell.

The Grove kitchen is set up for maximum efficiency, inspired by the cookline design at the company’s flagship restaurant, Pier 22, in Bradenton.

The line can hold up to 11 people, which means it can service a lot of people in both the restaurant and during events in the adjoining ballroom.

In the front of the house, removing walls improved the flow of traffic and now exposes an expanded bar area featuring a large bar top that seats 32 — with plenty of high tops to accommodate the busiest of happy hours.

“The bar area was designed to be a completely open space to avoid that awkward moment at the hostess stand,” says Campbell. “You walk right in and grab a stool.”

Two custom-made see-through wine cabinets separate the main dining area from one of three private dining spaces and hold up to 800 bottles of wine.

To achieve a modern, yet comfortable feel, Grove also features custom leather booths, white tufted walls and wood grain wainscoting.

Campbell says it was Lakewood Ranch history that inspired Grove’s name and décor, which took the natural wood melody throughout.

“First pick a location, then create the restaurant,” says Campbell. “We discovered it wasn’t just orange groves and cattle here. It was also timber groves.”

In the beginning stages of design and construction, Campbell was out looking for inspiration when he came across a 10-foot-long white cedar stump, downed in Holmes Beach during Hurricane Irma. He had it cut into nine slabs and used it for unique elements such as a high-top bar table and floor-to-ceiling partitions between booths.

The piece de resistance is the expanded 2,500-square-foot all-weather patio. The patio, which has been a popular spot since opening, features a fire-pit table, automated screens and a custom louver roof, which can

be opened and closed according to outdoor conditions and, of course, by customer request.

“We wanted a patio and bar to feel inviting,” says Austin Harlow, general manager of Grove, “for it to be a place to see and be seen.”

Harlow, who had a large part in the design of the bar and patio area, came to Grove from Pier 22 but has quickly immersed himself in the needs of his Lakewood Ranch customers, including what they like to drink. Fitting, since Harlow happens to be a sommelier and a cicerone (beer master). He was the main force behind the bar and craft cocktail menu that leaves little to be desired. That said, desire away, because if there’s something they don’t offer in the way of food or drink, Harlow and Campbell will not hesitate to make it (or get it) for you.

They know customer feedback is paramount to success.

“The one thing I have always hung my hat on is you have to constantly learn and constantly evolve,” says Campbell.

A beautiful space to congregate is not all Grove plans to offer Lakewood Ranch. The development of the sevenpage menu was a collaboration to offer regional American cuisine Campbell hopes will provide something for everyone.

“We are happy to be in the community and happy to be feeding people and, hopefully, make them happy,” says Campbell. “We just want to be there for people’s most important times of their lives.”

Campbell, who acted as the general contractor, choose custom and local elements to decorate the restaurant. He created a high-top bar table from the wood of a tree that was salvaged after Hurricane Irma and fashioned a cork art installation.

When James Miller ponied up to buy the Sarasota Polo Club last year, he set out to prove to his wife that you can lead a horse to water and make it drink.

Pillars of the Kentucky polo circuit, Misdee Wrigley Miller and James Miller began visiting the Sarasota Polo Club in 2004. “Other than in Southern California, I don’t know of any other club with such close proximity to a beautiful beach,” says James. “We’re in a unique place.”

ames Miller and Misdee Wrigley Miller have officially hit their stride at the Sarasota Polo Club.

Midway through their first season as owners of the 158-acre Lakewood Ranch mainstay, the couple is more energized than ever, thanks to the addition of live tailgating music, Sunday brunch and a total field makeover.

Two years ago, speculation surfaced over whether the 28-year-old polo grounds would cease to exist after Schroeder-Manatee Ranch nearly sold the property. When that deal fell through and the Millers — internationally known equestrians and longtime club members — made an offer, the local polo community breathed a sigh of relief.

“Everyone in the club was anxious for an insider to step forward and take a leadership role,” says James Miller, who dumped big bucks into improving the club’s nine fields, which had degraded significantly over the years.

“I’d be lying if I didn’t say bringing the fields back to life was a challenge. It was like rehabbing a historic home.”

A power couple on and off the field, the Millers are like the Jay-Z and Beyoncé of equestrian sports.

James is the former president of the Lexington Polo Club and a veteran polo player who competes in tournaments all over Europe and Barbados. Misdee is a fourth-generation horsewoman and a decorated combined and pleasure driving competitor. The great-granddaughter of Wrigley chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr., Misdee won the gold medal in combined driving last September at the FEI World Equestrian Games, making her the first Continued on Page 32

The couple owns and operates the 1,400-acre Hillcroft Farm in Kentucky, home to a world-class polo operation, saddlebred and thoroughbred racehorse breeding and a smattering of agricultural crops. They keep two barns and two dozen horses in the Sarasota Polo Club and a home in the Lakewood Ranch Country Club. They met in 2004 and were married in 2006.

How did you meet?

James: “My mother had met Misdee at an event in Kentucky. We were both divorced and equestrians, so my mother, being my mother, was trying to marry me off.”

Misdee: “But James never called.”

James: “She didn’t give me a phone number or a last name. It was just, ‘I met this nice woman. She competes in saddlebreds, and she’s interested in polo. Give her a call.’”

Misdee: “I bumped into his mother again at an art walk and we finally con-

nected.”

James: “Misdee was on her way out of town, so we ended up having this email correspondence for a month. We didn’t know anything about each other personally, so it was a really cool way to start a romance.”

Misdee: “It was very old-fashioned.”

What compelled you to buy the Polo Club?

James: “Like any club, it had its heyday. When we started coming here in 2004 it was coming off its apex. The club was vivacious and healthy, but the decline had already begun. A lot of the members were aging out, and when the recession hit it undercut the people who were on their way to building polo organizations. There was a lot of uncertainty.

As a member and player, it was difficult to see. Rumors started to swirl that the club was going to be shut down.”

So you decided to save it?

James: “Everyone was worried it was going to get cut up and subdivided.

That’s when I went to Misdee and said, ‘You know, we’re one of those equestrian families that people look to for support

in situations like this.’ There aren’t a lot of people who have the energy, resources and knowledge to make something like this work. I was passionate about it.”

Misdee: “I wasn’t. It sounded like a migraine waiting to happen.”

Why? Misdee: “James is one of those visionary, outside-of-the-box, big-picture thinkers. I ask ‘why’ and he asks ‘why not?’ I was worried it would be too much stress because he doesn’t do anything halfway, and we’re at a point in our lives when you start to dial it down.”

And how do you feel about the decision now?

Misdee: “I didn’t understand what the club meant to Lakewood Ranch and to Sarasota, in general. Seeing the response from the community has turned my heart around and helped me see what a jewel this is. It’s worth every penny, and I’m enjoying the challenge.”

James: “It’s been very gratifying. I’ve played polo all over the world and this is one of the nicest facilities I’ve ever seen.”

Misdee: “I’m so glad he didn’t listen to me.”

Center nears completion on an ambitious expansion to better serve the community.

f all the upgrades that resulted from Lakewood Ranch Medical Center’s $28.5 million expansion, one is likely to have the most immediate effect on the overall patient experience.

Lighting.

All of the hospital’s incandescent and fluorescent bulbs have been replaced by light-emitting diodes, commonly called LED. “It gives the center a more daylight kind of atmosphere, rather than that sterile office-building look,” says Lakewood Ranch Medical Center CEO Andy Guz. “National trends have hospital expansions leaning more toward a hotel-like experience, and that’s especially appropriate for Lakewood Ranch, which tends to be more upscale.”

The center has also upped its game by adding new treatments and technologies including:

Continued from Page 34 center opened in 2004. That area has been outfitted with modern interior designs and color templates that will spread throughout the hospital in subsequent renovation phases.

Guz says the expansion project has added almost 20,000 square feet of usable space to the hospital and includes a redesign of an additional 20,000 square feet — affecting nearly a quarter of the 120-bed hospital’s total space. All these enhancements, we might add, are exceedingly welllighted. Oh, and for good measure, the center got an exterior paint job as well.

Several phases have already opened, and the expansion is due to be complete in the first quarter of this year.

The project was necessary to meet the needs of a thriving community.

“It was a matter of keeping up with the demand,” Guz said. “As Lakewood Ranch grows, so must its hospital.”

Lakewood Ranch Medical Center says it has experienced a 40% increase in admissions, 66% rise in surgeries, 25% growth in emergency room visits and 76% surge in outpatient visits since 2010.

But patients aren’t the only ones who benefit from the expansion. Hospital administrators, working in concert with corporate parent Universal Health Services in Pennsylvania, spent two years developing the project before the first construction crews showed up. Part of that time was spent surveying doctors on what they most needed, then adding the proper components.

The expansion provides more opportunity and availability for its 491 on-staff physicians. Two new operating rooms, for instance, mean adding 10 additional operating days per week, says Guz. That allows surgeons to book more procedures and for more doctors to join the staff.

The hospital remaining fully operational during the 12- to 14-month project is a logistical achievement.

“The goal was always to have limited disruption of services,” Guz says, “so it was kind of like playing musical chairs.

[Doing construction] inside a clinical environment has far more rigorous standards than, say, an office building.”

Regarding sterility, there can be no mistakes, he says.

“I’d have to say that it went pretty smoothly,” he says, adding with a tinge of pride, “we’re on schedule and on budget.”

The makeover is the first phase of a master expansion plan that will include more projects during the next five to 10 years. Guz hopes that, when it comes to medical care, Lakewood Ranch residents “never have to leave the bubble.”

Game Changer Retired NFL running back Archie Griffin has two Heisman Trophies, a fabled college career, a charity golf tournament and one of the nicest reputations in football.

n a golf course in Lakewood Ranch, Archie Griffin goes mostly unrecognized. In his moisture-wicking polo shirt and megawatt smile, he looks like any other baby boomer heartily swinging a Ping 9-iron. At the Lucky Pelican, when he sits down for lunch, he doesn’t draw a crowd; not like other local sports celebrities. He doesn’t peddle memorabilia, self-help books or memoirs. When he’s approached for an autograph or asked to pose for a picture, he quietly obliges, flattered to be recognized at all.

“At my age, I’m just thankful that people still remember,” Griffin says.

“It’s always a blessing to be noticed.”

He keeps a low profile in Lakewood Ranch, where he’s lived for four years at Esplanade Golf & Country Club with his wife, Bonita, to whom he’s been married for more than three decades.

At 5-foot-9, the former running back doesn’t look like a retired football player, much less a Hall of Famer. At 64, the legendary Ohio State Buckeye is the only college football player to have won the Heisman twice – in 1974 and 1975. Griffin is a god in Ohio. A household name. A living legend. Just the mere mention of the moniker “Arch” among Buckeyes conjures up unabashed affection and the kind of reverence reserved for world leaders and saints.

When Griffin goes out for dinner in his hometown of Columbus, he seldom slips under the radar.

“You can’t walk into a restaurant in Columbus that isn’t filled with Archie Griffin fans,” says Bruce Cassidy, an Ohio native and Lakewood Ranch resident. “He’s approached constantly, and I’ve never seen him not be gracious. I asked him once, ‘How do you do this all the time?’ He said, ‘My Ohio family made me who I am today. It’s an honor, not a burden.’”

Cassidy, owner of The Concession Golf Club in East Manatee County, has known Griffin for years. Nine years ago, he and Griffin launched the Archie Griffin Celebrity Golf Classic benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County.

Over the past eight years, the twoday annual event at The Concession has raised more than $800,000. This year’s tournament, held March 4-5, will feature keynote speaker Evander Holyfield and celebrity emcee Damon Hack of NBC Sport’s The Golf Channel.

Griffin says the fundraiser is his way of giving back to the community, something his beloved Ohio State coach Woody Hayes used to urge all his fellow Buckeyes to do.

“Woody said, ‘You can’t pay back what people have done for you, so pay it forward by helping out young people,’” Griffin says. “He also told me to smile at people and they’ll smile back.

I’ve done both of these things in my career, and it’s served me well.”

Griffin got his start playing little league football in Columbus. Despite breaking records in college as a small, light-footed running back, he cut his teeth as a defensive lineman (“I was a fat kid,” he jokes. “They called me Tank.”).

One of six brothers, all of them football players, Griffin played nose guard in elementary school alongside kids almost twice his age because of his weight. After slimming down in high school, he was asked to fill in as a

You don’t ever really get golf. Golf gets you.” ARCHIE GRIFFIN fullback when a player failed to show up for a game. To the coach’s surprise, Griffin nailed the position, running the ball as fast as any other running back on the team, leaving his days as a pudgy lineman behind.

Says Griffin, “My high school coach had a sign hanging in our locker room that said, ‘It’s not the size of the dog in the fight. It’s the size of the fight in the dog.’ I liked that because I was never the biggest guy on the field, I just played with a big heart.”

During his last three seasons at Ohio State, Griffin rushed for 4,700 yards.

In 1986, he was enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame and in 1999, his jersey (No. 45) was retired by the Buckeyes.

“Desire, dedication and determination,” Griffin says. “I’ve tried to live my life giving a total commitment to those three Ds.”

n 2014, as it approached its 60th year, the Sertoma Club of Greater Sarasota came to a point of reckoning. With an aging membership and a hidebound structure that required mandatory dues and weekly luncheon attendance, the club had to decide if growth was part of its future.

Its service component — to aid those in the community impacted speech and language challenges, especially ages birth to 18 — was in good shape. But moving forward, how would

they attract new members? It wasn’t as if millennials were bum-rushing Wednesday lunches held at Cafe Baci.

Under the leadership of then-President Tim Self, the club launched a visionary initiative: a focus group of about 20 of its younger members, along with potential new members.

Jake Hartvigsen, 54, the current club secretary who becomes club president July 1, took part.

Continued from Page 50 “They were smart enough to say, ‘OK, if you look at what’s happening with service organizations around the country — they’re aging. What are we going to do to ensure we have a club that’s built for the future?’” he recalls. “They asked us our perceptions of the club, what we liked and didn’t like, what things they could do to get us involved and keep us engaged.”

Club leadership listened. And acted. They introduced a less expensive, pay-as-you-go dues alternative that did not mandate weekly attendance at luncheons. They introduced new social gatherings — like a karaoke night — that appealed to a younger crowd.

And they established fresh events, chief among them My Hometown Fest, which debuted in 2015 and draws close to 2,500 people each year.

The family-friendly gathering, slated for Saturday, March 25, at Nathan Benderson Park, features samples of food and craft beer from local restaurants and breweries, as well as live music and activities for kids. My Hometown Fest has quickly become one of the club’s two signature fundraising events, along with the annual golf tournament held in November.

Sertoma Sarasota’s forward-thinking approach has paid off in the larger sense as well. Its 95 members include more women and millennials, says Past President and board Chairman Michael Schuchat, who is 34. Hartvigsen, an attorney who lives in Lakewood Ranch, said he recognizes the ongoing challenges faced by clubs like Sertoma (Service to Mankind), Kiwanis, Rotary and Lions.

“This type of club is difficult in today’s age with everyone being as busy as they are, the speed of life, with everyone stuck to their phones,” Schuchat says. “However, I think we’ve done a good job blending the older membership with a good set of young people. You’re always going to have people who want to be actively involved in community service rather than simply write a check to a large charity. I think it’s something more people should consider — to find a balance in their life, and to give back.”

Meanwhile, the Sertoma Club of Greater Sarasota’s core purpose continues as it has for six decades. A spin-

off organization called Sertoma Kids runs speech and hearing therapy clinics for children from birth to age 18.

Three paid professionals conduct sessions at the Sarasota YMCA on Euclid Avenue, Children First on Orange Avenue and, starting last year, at Visible Men Academy, a school for at-risk boys in Bradenton.

Because the club wants to make its services accessible, it charges zero to $55 an hour, based on the client’s ability to pay.

“We try to bring them in at an early age,” Hartvigsen says, “because early intervention is important. If we can help kids gain those communication skills at a young age, they have a much better outlook.”

The club has also funded systems for the hearing impaired at Van Wezel

Performing Arts Hall and Florida Studio Theatre, and awarded grants to other organizations for speech and hearing therapy. Although the Sertoma Club of Greater Sarasota and Sertoma Kids are closely affiliated, they are separate nonprofits and conduct their own fundraising. They combine their revenue — $75,000 to $90,000 a year, Hartvigsen says — to pay for their service offerings.

The Sarasota group helped found Sertoma chapters in Bradenton in 1957 and Venice in 1976, so it’s been a while since a new one has formed. Although membership is open with any chapter, Hartvigsen says his club has its eye on the possibility of a new chapter— in Lakewood Ranch.

“With all the growth there,” he says, “it seems like a natural fit.”

Given its success and current growth forecast, we see no reason for it to have a quarter-life crisis.

The 31,000-acre community, with roots in both Sarasota and Manatee counties, is considered the master-planned community to which all other master-planned communities are compared — ranked No. 2 in the nation, second only to Central Florida’s retirement mecca, The Villages.

Purchased by the Uihlein family in 1922, the outpost wasn’t considered developmentfriendly until the late 1970s when the family began exploring other uses for the land after years of operating its as ranching and agribusiness Schroeder-Manatee Ranch.

That all changed in 1994, when SMR announced its foray into community development with the groundbreaking of Lakewood Ranch, a cattle ranch-turned-residential community east of Interstate 75. When the first village opened in Summerfield, people living in Sarasota and Bradenton considered it out in the boondocks. Oh, how the times have changed!

Today, more than 31,000 residents proudly call Lakewood Ranch home. Although it’s hard to narrow down all the reasons why the community is beloved, we can easily highlight 25 — starting with polo and ending with the zippy new gravity rail at Bob Gardner Park. UNPRETENTIOUS POLO Legend has it when SMR executives started playing knock-around polo with their ranch hands 30 years ago, they played for kicks … and booze.

According to Sarasota Polo Club lore, the first rider to fall off his horse was saddled with buying beer for all the other players. The game became official with the first advertised match, and soon a real club took shape. In 1991, the 158-acre Sarasota Polo Club opened off Lorraine Road, ushering in decades of world-class polo and internationally known players. Today, the club — sold last year to wellknown Kentucky equestrians James Miller and Misdee Wrigley Miller — features seven Bermuda grass fields, a half-mile horse track, a 72-horse boarding facility, clubhouse, pavilion and 22 weeks of game play. Every Sunday from December to April, the club opens its gates to spectators, who turn out in droves to tailgate in natty attire. Lakewood Ranch Main Street is a bona fide slice of modern Americana with a Rodeo Drive twist. (The palms lining the sidewalk throw a Beverly Hills vibe, but the down-to-earth merchants and chummy pedestrians are downright Midwestern in spirit.) A true crossroads of the community, Main Street boasts a plethora of food and drink opportunities that draw everyone from executives looking for a quick a cup of coffee on the way to the office to retirees looking to settle in for a long breakfast. This commercial enclave is so walkable and wellplanned, you could cavort downtown for days and never get bored — or need to start a car. There’s cinema and sushi, putt-putt golf and organic groceries, places to workout and places to meet for happy hour, places to get your hair cut and places to buy fancy soap. Who needs Main Street in downtown Sarasota when everything you need is on Main Street in Lakewood Ranch?

THE MOMS ROCK It’s no secret that Lakewood Ranch is brimming with kids. Families settle here because the houses are spacious and more affordable than in other areas. The thing that sets this community apart from other family-friendly communities isn’t its real estate, it’s the large-and-in-charge Lakewood Ranch Moms Group. Founded more than a decade ago by a group of motivated moms, this all-women army knows it takes a village to raise little ones, and it mobilizes the villagers for you. At more than 300 members, the group functions as a lifeline for area mothers, especially new-to-town mothers looking to connect with other families. In addition to daytime play groups, kid-free spa nights, meal trains, Santa visits and wine tastings, the group manages a Facebook page that provides support and a monthly newsletter that is chock-full of info from book reviews to DIY ideas and recipes. NATHAN BENDERSON PARK IS HUGE OK, so it’s not technically in Lakewood Ranch, but Nathan Benderson Park is close enough to be considered a major perk. NBP is 600 acres of green space, 400 acres of which is an open lake dedicated to recreational sports and spectator competitions such as rowing, kayaking, canoeing and dragon boat racing.

With several international rowing regattas under its belt, NBP is regarded as one of the state’s premier spots for world rowing events. It’s also a venue for food festivals and concerts, The nonprofit organization that operates the facility — Suncoast Aquatic Nature Center and Associates — is looking to expand programming by adding soccer, archery and drone racing.

CYCLISTS STICK TOGETHER The irreverently named Village Idiots Cycling Club takes full advantage of Lakewood Ranch’s interconnected streets, generous bike lanes and unblemished pavement. The recreational club, which also runs the more serious Village Idiots Racing Team, is one of the area’s most popular meetups, drawing flocks of spandex-clad cyclists of all ages to Main Street’s Village Bikes for morning and evening rides. An official USA Cycling Club, the group began 13 years ago as a handful of friends planning rides via email. Now, hundreds of cyclists go out for rides, which often end over a stack of pancakes or a pitcher of beer. CRICKET IS A BIG DEAL Strikers, batsman and jaffas, oh my!

In 2006, Lakewood Ranch became home to the Sarasota International Cricket Club, a nonprofit organization hatched in 1983 by hobby cricket players eager to bring the world’s second-most popular sport to the Suncoast. The club runs year-round, offering locals the chance to learn, play or watch a match. If you know nothing about the game or you find yourself in a sticky wicket and you’re looking for a unique pick-me-up, head to Parry Field near the end of University Parkway for a cricket match. The club’s Six-a-Side Cricket Festival held each year around Thanksgiving is a weekend-long event that draws teams from all over the world. The event will celebrate its 25th year this fall — just like Lakewood Ranch.

It’s good to be a dog in Lakewood Ranch. The community boasts six dog parks and a plethora of pet resorts, doggy day care centers, rescue facilities, bowwow boutiques and Fido-friendly fundraising events. Last October’s Barctober Fest, benefiting the Animal Rescue Coalition, was one of the area’s biggest pet festivals, with the exception of the old Pug Parade, which used to lure masses of pug lovers from all over the state to Adventure Park.

GREEN SPACE IS SACRED Despite steady growth and development, protecting the wetlands and natural ecosystems of yore was an essential part of the Lakewood Ranch development process. The market, which kicked off December 2017 at the Sarasota Polo Club, is a collaborative effort between SMR and Worden Farm, an 85-acre certified organic family farm and CSA program based in Punta Gorda. The market runs from 3-7 p.m. every Wednesday through April and features live music and free sunset yoga for residents looking for a little hump day Zen.

There was a time when Lakewood Ranch residents got sick of hearing they lived in the middle of nowhere. No one seems to say that anymore. Here’s why: Lakewood Ranch is 17 miles from Siesta Key, 13.9 miles from Lido Beach, 7.8 miles from the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport, 9.9 miles from downtown Sarasota and 38 miles from St. Petersburg. Even Tampa International Airport is less than an hour away. If anything, Lakewood Ranch’s location has gotten more convenient over the years, thanks to its proximity to the interstate.

IT’S GROWING INTO A BIOTECH HUB Collaboration Opportunities for Research and Exploration, or CORE, was created to bolster Lakewood Ranch’s growing life-sciences sector by appealing to biotech companies looking for new headquarters. THERE’S ROOM TO RUN Premier Sports Campus has 140 acres of Celebration-seeded grass and 23 FIFA-regulation fields that host mammoth sporting events. A statewide destination for soccer, rugby and lacrosse tournaments, the campus is already a hot spot for Ultimate Frisbee, food festivals and running events. On March 23, it will host The Great Inflatable 5K, an inflatable obstacle course race with an all-inflatable after-party. The former SMR-owned venue was purchased last year by Manatee County. THE GRAVITY RAIL AT BOB GARDNER PARK IS PURE JOY A two-directional swing ride that zips riders down a sloping track, the Gravity Rail at Bob Gardner Park is a hidden jewel. It runs on body weight and gravity. Kids and adults find it thrilling because there’s nothing else like it around. Finding the ride requires walking the park’s sidewalks for a decent stretch. Outdoor enthusiasts are loving this new 40-acre park that opened last April between Mallory Park and Arbor Grande. It has a playground, dog park (with splash lake), multiple pavilions, a baseball diamond and a nine-hole disc golf course. Like all the other parks around, it connects to a large network of trails. The trails are beautiful, but it’s the swing ride that sets Bob Gardner above the rest.

The future of early-stage cancer detection may exist in the snout of the jovial, floppyeared beagles of Bioscent DX.

A

half-dozen beagles cheerily flop around Heather Junqueira’s heels as she leads them to their play yard behind her Myakka City home. Their joyful tripping and wagging turns into all-out run of the yard, playing two-by-two in

the fenced-in area. They jump and greet visitors with happy eyes and sloppy kisses — when they can get away with it.

It’s a typical weekday morning for the dogs, gleeful playtime after they’ve put in their 40 minutes (or so) a day conducting serious business — detecting cancer.

Five years ago, Junqueira started BioScent K9, a nonprofit organization that trains diabetic alert dogs that can detect the scent of low blood sugar to alert a diabetic of an oncoming episode. Shortly after starting BioScent K9, she lost her father to late-detected cancer.

With a background in breeding and genetics, Junqueira began researching cancer and came across a program at the Pine Street Foundation in San Anselmo, Calif. Foundation researchers were working with dogs to detect breast and lung cancer by sniffing human breath condensation or saliva.

The research showed the dogs detecting cancer at early stages.

“I thought, wow, that could have saved my father’s life,” says Junqueira.

Discussions with the lead researcher turned into a new opportunity for BioScent. “He sent me all of his research — even some that wasn’t published. To get it accepted and mainstream, the process would have to be duplicated by different organizations.”

Junqueira began training the beagles to sniff out cancer. They’re the ideal breed, she says, because they have more olfactory nerves than other dogs, and their big floppy ears help waft the scent to their snout. Plus, they’re good natured and single-minded enough to stay focused on the task.

She and the pups were onboard, but her nonprofit wasn’t generating enough funds to support the research.

As many a Sarasota story goes, Junqueira was chatting with fellow gymnastics parent and owner of Evo Athletics, Kyle Lawton, an entrepreneur who retired after developing a radiology software company in his garage.

Lawton perked up when it sunk in that

With the desire to help move Junqueira’s venture forward, Lawton and his partner, Tampa-based Michael Moore, decided to invest. They started with the construction of a 4,000-square-foot facility on Junqueira’s 17-acre property, which is dedicated to cancer detection training. They also help fund the dayto-day operations of the new company, BioScent DX, which is separate from the diabetic alert training and dedicated to cancer screening.

Junqueira is almost exclusively working with and training BioScent DX’s beagle staff of 24. She also works alongside two dozen interns, who perform everything from research to caretaking. The beagles stay at the Myakka facility during the week but become part of Junqueira’s family or go to volunteer foster homes on weekends.

Lawton and Moore also helped Junqueira obtain the approval of an independent review board governed by the FDA, allowing DX to sell the experimental tests to people online. That was a hotly contested review, she says, but a review board member — a military veteran — pointed out that he’d entrusted the lives of his servicemen to bomb-detecting dogs every day.

Dogs are commonly used to sniff out drugs or imported foods in airports, and they’re vital in helping to fight fires. Those dogs are often larger and stronger in the event they need to take out a suspect or jump over structures.

The lower-bellied beagle, however, is ideal for medical studies.

JB, named after James Bond, is a 1-year-old puppy in training. He bounds happily into the detection room, where Junqueira has placed a variety of canisters at JB’s snout level.

Within seconds, JB has dipped his nose in several of the canisters around the room and sits attentively next the breast cancer sample. “You found it!”

Junqueira says as she presses a clicker to confirm and hands him a treat.

“I could train a Labrador to do the same work, but it would take a Lab two to three minutes to go through the room and find a positive sample,” she says. “The beagle will find it in about five seconds. They live to smell — they could do it all day. Other breeds would get bored with it.”

And the beagles are good at finding the cancer. Like, really good at it.

“It’s an elegantly simple process with 98% accuracy,” Lawton says. “We all have a one-in-five chance of getting cancer. Why wouldn’t you breathe into a mask for five minutes? It’s a nobrainer.”

BioScent DX sells the experimental breath tests online and delivers results within four weeks. The detection tests are $50 apiece but if financial assistance is needed, a person can visit sniffingoutcancer.org to see if help is available. Each test delivers a positive or negative cancer result, which in the case it is positive should be followed up with traditional diagnostic or ultrasound tests to confirm its location.

But what exactly is it in the cancer that the dogs are smelling? No one knows. That’s why BioScent DX has partnered with research professors like Dr. Tom Quinn and faculty at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Lakewood Ranch.

“We don’t know what they’re detecting, and that’s what we’re trying to do back here in the biochemistry lab,” says Quinn. “We’re breaking it down into elements and trying to determine which one of those the dogs are identifying.”

Once the researchers break that code, they can replicate it and design a test similar to a pregnancy test available at the local drug store. Although the low-cost and noninvasive nature of the beagle test has many advantages, it’s not meant as a replacement for a mammogram or other detection test.

“All the test says is yes or no, it doesn’t say where,” says Quinn.

Continued from Page 71 better than mammograms, which have an 87% success rate in accurately identifying cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute. And the beagles are smelling the cancer in its earliest stages.

“We had one patient where the dog identified the cancer, but doctors couldn’t find it until 18 months later,” Quinn says.

And that’s another major game changer. If the dogs detect it before a mass develops, treatment can possibly head it off.

“Down the road, this is opening the realm to treat cancer at the cellular level — like simple dietary changes,” says Junqueira. “That’s my hope — that this will prompt other research.”

here are artists among us — maybe you knew that. Or, perhaps, you haven’t taken time to consider them, to view their

work, or to buy one of their pieces.

You should. [Please do.]

Sprinkling original artwork into your home — whether purely decorative or functional — supports small local businesses and does not have to break the bank. It could be something as simple as a wire basket or a wooden salad bowl — made with creativity, care and love. One of a kind.

A good place to start your neighborhood arts quest is at two exhibitions presented by the 18-year-old Creative Arts Association of Lakewood Ranch, one of which is coming up March 16.

Meanwhile, get to know four committed artists who live in our midst. Collectively, they produce an eclectic range of artwork — many of which, by the way, you'll find affordable.

The Metalist

JERRY WOLFE The blacksmith — that gruff sweaty guy hammering away at horseshoes in a barn — has been consigned to history’s scrap heap, but the trade itself lives on, as a craft and as an art.

Jerry Wolfe is proof. He’s a modernday blacksmith who also answers to metal sculptor.

Using creativity, high heat and muscle, Wolfe forges pieces mostly from steel, with some copper, aluminum and titanium added for flair. He makes headboards, tables, table baskets, trivets, trellises and gates. Wolfe also sculpts flowers whose delicate appearance belies their tensile strength.

give them names like “Phantasmagoria” and “Steel Origami.”

“Sometimes I just want to create something that has no purpose, that is strictly art,” says Wolfe, “but most of what drives me in the forge is to make what people want.”

Wolfe creates some commission work. He also shows and sells his pieces at art events, including the two sales the Creative Arts Association of Lakewood Ranch, of which he’s a member, presents each year.

Other projects are more altruistic: For several years he’s created an elaborate table for a raffle at his church, Lakewood Ranch Baptist.

Wolfe’s interest in smithing goes back to his days as an Indiana farm boy. He earned a degree in metallurgical engineering at Indiana Institute of Technology, then spent several de-

cades working as an engineer in Alliance, Ohio. In 1988, Jerry took a blacksmith class, and over the years a hobby morphed into an artistic pursuit.

After he retired and moved to Florida in 2003, Wolfe rented a space off Whitfield Avenue, near U.S. 301, that doesn’t quite resemble the blacksmith shops of yore. Wolfe Forge, as he calls it, is dark and crammed with machin­ no air conditioning. ery and tools — “It’s hot, hard work, especially in the summertime,” says Wolfe, who’s 76. “I have to pace myself so I don’t get heatstroke.”

Wolfe sells hooks and hangers for $10 to $30, and decorative baskets for $60 to $100. On the higher end, his table sculptures run $150 to $500, and his intricate table bases will set you back $250 to $600. He isn’t in it to make money, but he does want to cover the cost of materials and shop rent. As such, he’s become more sales-focused.

“I get frustrated when I put certain items into a show that I think the public might want and they don’t sell,” he says. “I sold a lot of candleholders in Ohio, but in Florida they don’t sell.”

Wolfe says that has caused him to shift his philosophy to making more regionally desirable pieces.

“I recently did my first alligator sculpture,” he says.

“I’ve always loved making things,” says Drew Stuart — many times over.

Not the loftiest of mantras about artistic motivation, but they’ve been words to live by for the 72-year-old retired elementary teacher.

Stuart tends to shy away from referring to himself as an artist — but an artist he is, one who’s difficult to pigeonhole. If pressed, we’ll go with sculptor. He makes everything from puppets and marionettes to fish and bird lawn ornaments and a lot of cartoonish human figures and faces. They

The Glass Master

LIANA MARTIN She started with stained glass.

“Not my thing,” says Liana Martin.

“Too static, re-creating someone else’s pattern, and the sound of cutting glass made me cringe.”

She moved on to lampworking, where one uses a torch to heat and shape molten glass.

“I was making beads, and I don’t wear jewelry,” she says. “I thought, ‘What am I going to do with all these beads?’”

Then she found it: glass fusing, a technique that joins pieces of glass together by melting them in a kiln.

Martin has made a viable career as glass-fusing artist, which includes a busy teaching schedule.

She still makes jewelry — lots of it — and windows, panels, gun handles, guitar facades and dazzling original pieces she mounts on metal stands.

Her 18-by-40-inch “Kindergarten Geometry” is a Picassoesque dazzler,

all vibrate with intense color. They’re whimsical, irreverent and sometimes downright funny. Have a weakness for pigs in a blanket? How about a cute clay sculpture of a porker wrapped in a plaid throw?

Stewart’s primary medium is clay, but over the years he’s also used papier-mâché, Styrofoam, PVC, fabric, metal, cardboard, furring strips and myriad other materials.

He grew up in Staten Island, N.Y., and northern New Jersey with a maternal grandfather who was a carpenter.

“I took all the shop classes in high school, but never took an art class,” says the voluble retiree.

He started wood carving as an adult.

For 25 years, he whittled Santas, each with a family theme. About five years ago, he switched to clay.

“It’s an additive process, where carving is subtractive,” says Stuart.

“It suits me better, plus I can make amazing things out of clay in a couple of hours, where it would take me 20 hours of carving.”

Stuart shows his work at the Manatee Arts Center — he was a featured artist in January — and, as a member of the Creative Arts Association of Lakewood Ranch, sells his wares at its shows. Most of his pieces run less than $100. A colorful fish or bird on a rebar stand ranges from $40 to $60.

But sales are a minor concern.

“I just want to make money enough to keep playing with the mud,” he says, referring to clay.

For Stuart, it’s about the process, and it’s about fun.

“A lot of people won’t make art, won’t even take an art class if they’re not already good at it,” he says. “I’m put off by that idea. Just enjoy the element of play. If something’s worth doing, it’s worth doing poorly.”

Martin has also found a niche she says some people “find creepy” — glass encasements for cremation ashes, be it dearly departed family members or pets. We’re talking necklaces, bracelets, keychains and worry stones — not urns.

“People get to carry the remains of their loved ones with them,” says Martin. “I find it touching.”

The daughter of a military man, Martin spent her first six years in Germany, then the family moved to Virginia. Her maternal grandmother gave her a collection of glass figurines, which sparked the youngster’s fascination with the medium. She earned a biology degree — and minored in art — at Kennesaw State University near Atlanta and took glass-fusing classes in her spare time. Martin worked for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources stocking trout at hatcheries and doing field studies. After moving to Florida in 2000, she was unable to find regular work as a biologist, so she turned to art full time.

For several years, she owned a business in Venice called Firebug, situat-

ed in a 2,000-square-foot space that housed 13 kilns, five torches, a gallery and retail area. She sold it four years ago and now lives in Lakewood Ranch, where her workspace includes the entire upstairs and one garage bay.

When Martin is not making art in her home studio, she teaches classes at Suncoast Technical College, Manatee Arts Center and at a Montessori school in Venice. She also holds group instruction in private homes. For several years, she created one-of-a-kind artworks that the Fine Arts Society of Sarasota handed out as awards. She sells her creations at J&J Gallery, the Manatee Arts Center and The Cottage Art Gallery in Nokomis. Her jewelry ranges in price from $15 to $200; table art pieces go for $95 to $700; and larger works on stands run $1,800 to $2,400.

You might say Martin is a seeker, a bit of a restless soul. In addition to biology, she has studied computer science, veterinary medicine and private investigation.

“What can I say?” says Martin, “I get bored.”

But does she ever get bored making art?

“Never.”

The Wood Whisperer JIM O’DONNELL

Woodturner Jim O’Donnell has crafted hundreds of pieces, from fancy pens (1,500 at last count) to elegant salad bowls to adventurous abstractions — meant purely for show. Although most of his projects are utilitarian, others are born of inspiration. His segmented “Claudia” vase, for instance, is an homage to German supermodel Claudia Schiffer. Yes, it is curvaceous.

“The wood speaks to you and says what it wants to be,” says O’Donnell, admitting it sounds artsy-fartsy.

“When it clicks for me is when I know what the piece is going to be. And I have this God-given gift to see a finished piece before I start it.”

The more exotic the wood — amboyna burl, cocobolo, ebony, African blackwood — the more likely it is to end up as fine art. O’Donnell may devise a schematic for complicated pieces, but he mostly just cranks up his lathe and gets to turning, gouging, LWR LIFE

carving and shaping. The process also includes gluing and adding finishes of oils, beeswax or satin lacquer. Occasionally, with more involved projects, he starts by building fiberboard jigs, or special tools, to help engineer his vision.

O’Donnell sources his wood several ways. A friend may tell him about a downed tree and he’ll show up with his chainsaw. Other pieces arrive via shipment from around the world. One time, a woman in Finland sold him a section of “spectacular” Masur Birch with the proviso he send her pictures of what he created from it.

O’Donnell came to Florida in 1991 after earning his master’s degree in communication disorders from St. Louis University. He became a resident of Summerfield Woods in 1995. He works full time as a speech pathologist at Complex Care Hospital at Ridgelake in Sarasota and has a wife and three children. Balancing family, faith, work and art is a challenge, and he’s careful not to spend an inordinate amount of time at his lathe.

O’Donnell’s prices range from $55

to $140 for salad bowls to $3,900 for his dazzling Double Vision Shoji, for which he had to spend $250 on ebony alone. Lately, he’s focused on segmented pieces, like the multihued “Claudia” vase.

“Segmented stuff sells,” he says pointedly.

hen people discuss Lakewood Ranch’s more prestigious communities, The Lake Club and the Country

Club always come up. Many people say the Polo Club has a special cachet. It has a lifestyle that few places in the world can boast.

After all, it’s home to “the sport of kings.”

The authenticity is overwhelming.

This is not some gussied up idea of what a developer thinks a polo club might look like. It’s the real thing and has been for decades. Horses are everywhere, grazing in pastures and being put though their paces. The homes that dot the place are actually mini-ranches, with barns and outbuildings, set on spreads that range from 5 to 10 acres-plus.

There is big money out here, including some of the country’s most famous fortunes. But all the residents are here for a horse-centered environment, and that makes it a democratic place.

Everybody knows everybody, and the social events connected with the matches provide even more bonding for the residents.

Do you have to play polo to live there? Not necessarily. Reed and Ginny Savidge don’t play — although they certainly attend the tailgate parties that are a feature of every match.

For them the big draw is the country lifestyle. They both grew up on large pieces of land. Ginny’s childhood home was a 250-acre ranch in Kentucky. “I can still plow and operate a back-hoe,” she boasts.

The Savidges moved to the Polo Club back in 2001. They had built and lived in several houses in Sarasota, in places like The Landings and The Meadows. But their hands-on support for The Out-Of-Door Academy, which their kids attended and for which Reed raised $3.5 million, led them to consider somewhere nearer to the school’s new campus. And besides, the move gave Ginny the chance to do what every person wants to do: “I wanted to build my dream house.”

Continued from Page 84 The Savidges chose a model from the famous Southern Living collection called Barton Creek. It’s a classic all-American design, a country estate crossed with an old-fashioned farm house. There are screened porches front and rear, each with a swing, and the Savidges leave the home open to the weather as much as possible.

The house is larger than it looks.

It measures in at just less than 6,500 square feet, and it’s set on 5.32 acres.

Like virtually every home in the Polo Club, there’s a barn included. The Savidges’ has eight stalls and a special floor of shell covered with rubber.

As with most Polo Club barns, there’s an apartment, too. In this case it’s 800 square feet, nicely fixed up.

It’s the custom that if you don’t keep horses yourself, you rent the barn and apartment to someone who does. The Savidge barn is currently rented to a trainer from abroad and four sleeklooking horses.

The interior of the main house is American country with a cowboy twist.

The floors are oak, and decorative art with western references is everywhere.

Pedestal-mounted saddles greet the visitor in the entrance hall, and on the wall on the dining room is a painting of a beautiful Native American girl.

The house is customized with many touches the Savidges added. You’ll see a decorative window transom they found at an antique store in Arcadia.

The fireplace mantel in the family room belonged to Reed’s parents. The fireplace beneath it is not gas, by the way. “I wanted an old-fashioned wood burning fireplace,” Ginny says.

The master bedroom is on the ground level, and the bath features a modern claw-foot tub. Nearby is a well-used office. The Savidges own several Ace Hardware stores, including the busy one on Longboat Key, and much of their business is managed here. Upstairs there are three bedrooms, each with its own bath, and a large playroom. It is here the couple’s three children grew up; they have moved out and now own their own homes in Lakewood Ranch.

Like all Southern homes, there is a formal living room, but the life of the home can be found in the family room.

In the distance, past the swimming pool and some well-manicured grass is the track where the horses are trained.

With their kids grown up and gone, the Savidges have decided to put their home on the market. (It’s priced at $2,897,000.) “But we’re sure going to miss this,” Reed said, gesturing toward the view. “We love watching the horses. And the wildlife.”

As if on cue we heard a loud squawking noise and looked up to see a trio of sandhill cranes in great commotion.

What was going on? Was something threatening their nest?

Then we saw the panther. In my 35 years here it was the first one I’d ever seen. For a moment you had no idea what was going to happen, and I feared the worst. But never underestimate a crane. The panther was increasingly flummoxed by the racket the cranes were making. Suddenly he took off, running at full gallop across the field.

At that moment the Savidges’ house — and the Polo Club — was the coolest place in town.

Having grown up in a cold, Midwest climate, I perceived Florida to be a magical place with never-ending sunshine.

Like so many others, I dreamed of trekking thousands of miles on an annual family vacation. Disney, beaches and theme parks, oh my.

Eventually I grew up and lived out my childhood dream by moving to the Sunshine State. I’m fairly sure 9-yearold me is still proud. I don’t have to take vacation, I LIVE on vacation!

Good thing too, because as a parent the

word “vacation” when mixed with small children, brings a paralyzing fear. Add in the words “flight” or “road-trip” and you’ll soon find me huddled and rocking in a corner. Eleven hours in a car with kids? No thanks. Kudos to you, parentsof-kids-in-other-states.

Fortunately for those of us who made the (wise) choice to settle in Lakewood Ranch, there are myriad affordable options for day-trips, staycations or full-on family getaways that won’t be bookended with days of travel.

BEACH TRIPS

On a budget? Take a random weekday off work, pack a cooler of snacks and

(adult) beverages, load up the kids, and head to one of the many amazing beaches we have at our fingertips. Go fishing at Rod and Reel Pier on Anna Maria Island or play on the playground at Siesta Key. If you want something quieter, scope out a personal patch of sand with the locals on Holmes Beach or Bradenton Beach. The best part? If your small humans begin to meltdown, hop back in the car, because you’re only 30 to 45 minutes away from home (phew!).

Want to take it up a notch? Airbnb and VRBO both offer affordable, private and unique lodging options to give you a true getaway feel. Embrace the seaside lifestyle for a few days and explore the selection of locally owned restaurants and shops that create the true character of a beach town.

Don’t roll your eyes. I am the first one to shy away from crowds, lines and melting credit cards. But there are a seemingly unlimited number of options for saving your sanity (and bank account) while providing your tiny tot with a series of pretty darn cool experiences. Many of these can even be done in a single day! Read: less packing, less stress and less planning ahead.

Preschool Passes: Many theme parks are picking up on a trend to offer FREE annual passes to the next generation of roller-coaster fiends. Legoland, Busch Gardens and SeaWorld all offer free annual tickets to munchkins aged 5 and under.

Fun Passes: In conjunction with the preschool pass, parks are also offering adults an annual membership of sorts for a price not much higher than a single-day admission. Sure, there are black-out dates, but who wants to frequent a theme park during a peak attendance week in July anyway?!

Florida Resident Packages: Walt

Disney World and Universal Studios lead the way with flex passes for families. Residents get a discount off tickets, and they are adding in free days to double your park time. Grab a hotel room either on or off-premises (there are deals for everything!) and ride the teacups until you fall over, or split up your time with a series of day trips.

TAMPA EXPLORATION

Tampa is the closest “big city” to our area that boasts endless options for children, adults and families. There are several opportunities for exploring the area both as a day trip or getaway.

Pay for a Day: ZooTampa at Lowry Park offers the option to pay for a day at full-price and come back all year long.

This pass even includes special events for holidays. With exciting animal exhibits, hands-on experiences (ever fed a giraffe?), a petting zoo, splash pad and small amusement park rides, there is something for everyone at the zoo.

CityPass: Last, but not least, if you are craving a true vacation without all the hassle and travel, book yourself a week or more up in Tampa. The city,

roughly an hour away, offers a whole host of options for entertainment.

Several major attractions have joined forces to offer an all-encompassing pass. Good for nine consecutive days, CityPass grants unlimited admission to Busch Gardens, The Florida Aquarium, ZooTampa at Lowry Park, Clearwater Marine Aquarium and the Museum of Science and Industry. Break up the adventures with a Tampa Bay Rays or Lightning game, or dining trips to Armature Works and Sparkman Wharf, and you’ve created a vacation on the fly.

The Ranch Outdoors Most of the country may still be shoveling snow, but here at The Ranch we’re reveling in perfect weather and a wealth of green space, while unintentionally playing on private playgrounds.

ost of the year, it’s too hot in Lakewood Ranch. Or — maybe — too humid.

Whichever it is, during the Florida summer of May through October, unless we’re going to the beach, I avoid outside like the plague.

This is, of course, the muchpreferred cost we pay for not having to shovel snow or endure months of bleakness and layers. And we can still can go outside in the summer, if we mentally and deodorantly prepare for the instant all-encompassing sweat from merely standing outside for more

than five minutes.

During the buffer months of November and December we have nicer weather on the whole, but it bounces between warm and cool quite a bit as it settles into the cool months, so it’s not reliably nice out there. Some years, Christmas is a pleasant 70 degrees, while others it’s a balmy 85. April is the other side of that buffer, as the weather warms up again.

January, February and March though — that’s Lakewood Ranch weather. It’s rarely too warm, and if it gets too cold, you just run or hike or climb harder. It’s during these months that my 4-year-old

and I take full advantage of “the nature.”

Before moving to Lakewood Ranch, I thought of it as suburbia — and it is suburbia. But living here, I’ve grown to appreciate the sheer amount of green space left undisturbed.

One of our favorite things to do is to hike from the back of Summerfield Glades, through the Heron’s Nest Nature Preserve, to Greenbrook Adventure Park, and back. The park is great for kids, and there are big fields to run on, so it’s a good destination. The walk Continued on Page 96

to and from it is beautiful, and rarely dull. On cool mornings, a fog forms over the lakes, and the wooded trails feel almost surreal — like something out of Tim Burton’s “Sleepy Hollow.” There are usually people walking their dogs, but we’ve also seen deer, a gator in the pond by the park, and once, a diamondback rattlesnake. I’m hoping to spot a bobcat one of these days. One should always have a watchful eye for critters, and use sound judgment.

Nearer to our house, there is a trail that we love almost as much. It runs between our neighborhood and the one south of us, curves by a lake, then over a picturesque bridge, through a tree canopy in a small patch of woods. It makes its way past our neighborhood and continues between two lakes to another larger forest.

New Year’s Eve 2017, we were following it as we’d done a few times before, but instead of going into the forest, we took a left to go near a river on the edge of another neighborhood. A little farther, we got to a clearing in the woods, which we had been to before. On our earlier

visit, it had looked like something out of a horror movie: a dilapidated playset, with a rusted over swing set, an overgrown seesaw and a broken bench. It was equal parts scary and fascinating.

This time though, to our surprise, the lovely people at Town Hall had renovated the park. In place of the dilapidated playset, there was a new big and colorful one. There was a set of small tree stumps in a circle, and they’d cleaned the whole park, including the railings on the river edge. My kid enjoyed climbing all over the playground and swinging.

We were excited to have rediscovered this hidden and, now polished gem so close to our house.

But then, a man — a long stone throw away — interrupted our merriment asking what we were doing. As it turned out, this was not a town park, but his private property (gulp). Turns out we had veered off the trail, and into his enormous backyard, which backed up to the river. Embarrassed, I apologized before we tucked our tails and headed home to celebrate the New Year. This New Year’s Eve, we stuck to the forest, and still had a blast.
