At our sister publication, the East County Observer, we often joke that sometimes it feels like the National Geographic Observer. For some reason, there is never any shortage of stories on animals and wildlife in the area.

Whether it’s sandhill cranes that stop traffic with their early morning strolls, or wild boars that occasionally ravage lawns, the wildlife that make Lakewood Ranch so appealing can also become a nuisance from time to time.

But, if you couldn’t tell from our cover, the animals in this issue are no nuisance.

In fact, they are all in places meant to care for and preserve them. As it turns out, east Manatee County is home to quite a few of these places.

But lions, tigers and bears? Oh my.

Yep. Turns out, we’re home to them all. Even a few rogue peacocks relocated here from Longboat Key.

Speaking of attractions, about the time you receive this magazine, the one-year countdown will begin for the 2017 World Rowing Championships at Nathan Benderson Park, just west of Interstate 75.

The community has done a lot to get prepared for this event, which will bring 1,000 competitors from more than 70 countries to our area. From tolerating years of construction at the University Parkway interstate exit, to lobbying the state to help fund infrastructure at the park, the event has taken much in the way of effort and resources.

Simply put, the stakes are high to pull off a successful event that showcases our area well. And the person responsible for making sure everything runs smoothly? Meredith Scerba.

Over the next year, Scerba, the director of the championships, will accelerate efforts to gather more than 1,000 volunteers, raise enough money to fund remaining needs and coordinate logistics to make sure the athletes and visitors coming to town are impressed.

No pressure.

But Scerba not only sees it as an opportunity to make a good impression for out-of-towners, but also to engage the community to learn about the sport.

remier Sports Campus at Lakewood Ranch has upped its game. After more than six months of renovations, the new and improved athletic facility is ready for its close-up: the Chargers Soccer Club’s 2016 Labor Day Tournament, which is expected to bring 13,000 to 14,000 people to the area in September.

Although the campus has been open since 2011, the three-day youth soccer competition is being heralded as the christening of Premier’s new 3,000-seat stadium. In addition to breaking in the new grandstands, the facility is poised to show off its new medical/multipurpose building, concessions stand and Lakewood Ranch Information Center.

No one is more thrilled with the facelift than Premier Sports Campus Director Antonio Saviano. Premier no longer has to haul in temporary bleachers to accommodate large crowds at major sporting events.

“The upgrades are allowing us to attract different and bigger events,” Saviano says. “We already had one of the best facilities in the country. Now it’s even better. We’re growing, and it doesn’t look like we’re going to stop.”

Saviano signed on as campus director in 2013.

In the three years since he took the position, Premier has seen an obvious increase in the number of top-notch, big-draw sporting events played on its 22 fields.

In October, the 140-acre campus will welcome the U.S. Australian Football League Nationals, which require three soccer fields’ worth of playing space.

And in December, U.S. Soccer will return with its Winter Showcase — making good on its promise to play in Lakewood Ranch if Premier added more seating.

“I’d say 90% of the people who come here come from out of town,” says Saviano. “If the numbers work out, we’ll have brought close to 70,000 people to Lakewood Ranch by the end of the year.”

Playing for keeps The Players Centre will cement Lakewood Ranch’s connection with Sarasota’s arts scene.

t first blush, it seemed like an unlikely fit: a decades-old arts institution relocating from downtown Sarasota to Lakewood Ranch. Even Schroeder-Manatee Ranch CEO Rex Jensen wrestles a bit explaining why The Players Centre for the Performing Arts makes an ideal anchor for Lakewood Ranch’s new Waterside development.

“It’s like Antaeus,” Jensen says, turning to Greek mythology. “When he was connected, he was strong.”

For those of us who aren’t mythology buffs, Antaeus was invincible as long as he stayed in contact with his mother — the Earth. He took advantage of that strength, wrestling all opponents who would accept the challenge, tackling them to the ground before killing them. Upon discovering Antaeus’ secret weapon, Heracles threw Antaeus into the air before crushing him with a bear hug.

So what does all this have to do with SMR’s pursuit of The Players Centre?

“It shows that if you are not connected, you could be strangled,” Jensen says.

The CEO feels that for Waterside to thrive, the community should establish a clear connection with Sarasota’s cultural roots.

The Players, a Sarasota mainstay for eight decades, will not only bring historic and artistic charm to a newfangled Lakewood Ranch development; it’ll drive legions of loyal patrons east of the interstate.

Continued from Page 26 “I wouldn’t say we don’t have anything (in terms of cultural activities), but I think as our community grows, we are ripe for additions,” Jensen says. “We’ve got 24,000 residents and we can become an epicenter for the arts.”

Jensen has another reason to court The Players.

“They’ve been around 87 years, as long as (SMR) has been around. That’s a great fit,” he says. “They also approach this like a business, and we like that. They have a good business mindset.”

In May, the community theater announced plans to build a three-theater complex on 4.5 acres in the middle of the 3,500-acre Waterside development. Originally designed to border the perimeter of the community, the project is now being pegged as Waterside’s centerpiece — and its tallest building.

Players CEO and Managing Director Michelle Bianchi Pingel estimated the complex could open as early as three years from now, but the sale of The Players’ Sarasota building could slow that process down a bit. The organization’s Tamiami Trail theater is currently listed for $12.5 million.

Jensen says he’s not worried about sticking to a deadline. “How many things have I done that

have taken 10 to 20 years? I just care it gets done,” says Jensen.

Lakewood Ranch business leaders are already touting the move as Lakewood Ranch’s next big phase of development. Heather Kasten, executive director of the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance, says the addition of a major arts venue makes the Ranch even more desirable to current and prospective businesses. “The Players will provide a great setting for companies that want to get together for group activities,” says Kasten.

“It tremendously adds to our package. It rounds out the offerings, completes the puzzle.”

Sharon Hillstrom, the president and CEO of the Bradenton Area Economic Development Corp., agrees. She views the theater as the ultimate marketing tool. “From a cultural standpoint, it obviously speaks to quality-of-life issues,” Hillstrom says. “It’s going to be very attractive to companies recruiting employees to the area. It’s an icing-on-the-cake kind of thing.

The community as a whole benefits.”

The Players ushers in 75,000 patrons each year. Last year it hired 148 independent contractors to work on a variety of productions, all of which bodes well for Lakewood Ranch restaurateurs, shopkeepers and hoteliers. “We fill a need,” says Bianchi Pingel. “We add more options for a family.”

The Players facilities committee has narrowed its search for an architect to several candidates, including Sarasota-based SchenkelShultz Architecture, West Palm Beach firm Designel and Fort Myers’ R G Architects. The organization is expected to make its final selection by the end of August.

Three Lakewood Ranch builders, Willis A. Smith Construction, Tandem Construction and Gilbane, have been invited to interview for the project. In an effort to gather more information before settling on a design, Players Theatre Artistic Director Jeffery Kin and Managing Director Michelle Bianchi Pingel toured 17 theaters around the United States.

ast Manatee Fire Rescue District Chief Byron Teates and Deputy Chief Lee Whitehurst started in the district 32 and 33 years ago, respectively — back when the department consisted solely of volunteers and there was a single East Manatee fire station.

Since then, the district has grown with the community it serves: It has six stations and 71 employees.

Now Teates, 59, who has been chief for 13 years, is preparing to retire by the end of 2016, and Whitehurst, 52, is preparing to take on the role of chief.

LWR Life sat down with the pair to see what the future holds for the rapidly expanding district.

Teates: Woods. Pastures…

We had one restaurant, the YumYum House, at the intersection of Lorraine Road and 64.

Whitehurst: We had no traffic lights, maybe a dozen fire hydrants…

Braden Woods was just starting, and it was the Braden Woods project that stretched us. We’d respond to Linger Lodge from that one station at State Road 64 and I-75.

Our district was 100 square miles from day one for the most part.

grow to the point where the services are provided before we can continue with those stations.

How does the district approach planning for the future?

Whitehurst: Our 2010 Census said we had over 52,000 people in this district. We’ve been trying to get a more accurate number at the halfway point but have not been successful. We could get a regional estimate, but the problem is, it’s based on ZIP codes, and we’ve got three different ZIP codes here ... We added a couple thousand parcels to the tax roll this year.

We do a lot of regressive analysis where we go back five years. Since we’ve been past the economic downturn for several years, we have the basis for some good numbers to use as we forecast.

Teates: We have a very good board that looks into the future, and we’ve bought two parcels of land for two more stations. We’re debt-free. We’re one of the few governmental agencies that can say that. Whether that’s three years, five years down the road, we have the land for the stations.

Does the district have the resources to cope with growth?

Teates: I think so. The greatest cost — and the greatest resource — you have is the firefighters. What we have to look at is at what point the growth will sustain a fire station.

Whitehurst: Compared to the other (Manatee) fire districts, we’re not as busy. But we’ve increased our calls for service. So far this year, our calls for service are up 17%. For us, it’s mostly about distance. As the streets are added and stop signs and stoplights and things like that are added, it slows our response down. Back in the day, you’d get on State Road 64 or 70 go wherever it is you’re going, and you’d never have to stop for anything. Our response has slowed, our calls for service have increased.

As this area grows — you have Lakewood National and Del Webb coming out of the ground, and the Lakewood Ranch Country Club going out east — that pulls units away, and it will make sense to put a unit out there. We’re not there yet, but we’re getting there.

What is the time frame for building the stations on the parcels (one located just west of The Concession and another just west of Panther Ridge) the district purchased in 2012?

Teates: It really does depend on how fast the developers continue east.

Whitehurst: Right now, there’s no road service, no water service, sewer service. It really has to

Whitehurst: We tend to err on the side of caution when we’re trying to forecast the future and be conservative with the numbers until it’s realized that maybe we did a little bit better than what we forecasted. We’d much rather it be that way than the other way around … In 2007, we had a five-year plan

we were following and had looked at adding a couple stations and adding a person at each station.

We were able to achieve all of the stations in spite of that. We were still able to build the station (in front of the East Manatee Fire Rescue Administration Building) in 2010. We delayed it — mind you, it had been planned for 2008 — but we were still able to build that.

How is the department involved in the planning process for new communities?

Teates: The fire marshall and the county review all plans for new subdivisions and make sure we’ve got all the required access, turnarounds, that we have the ability to get into gated communities. There’s pretty good relations and communications.

Whitehurst: The fire code in all the districts spell out things like the width of streets and the size of cul-de-sacs even down to the landscaping so that they’re not planting in front of hydrants. The fire marshals for all of Manatee are part of the review process.

To Whitehurst: What’s your vision for the department five years from now?

Whitehurst: I don’t see the department looking much different than it does now. We’ve been pretty steady with the philosophy of payas-you-go — that’s why we have no debt — with this district and chief that certainly came in handy during the recession. As we grow, it’s simply about adding a station or two over the next five to 10 years.

Continued from Page 36 Meet Miss Central Florida 2016. Hyatt, Sammy to her friends and family, is a 19-year-old East County native who obliterates every imaginable pageant stereotype, save the usual wish for world peace. (We all want that.)

After winning the regional crown in April, the Lakewood Ranch High School graduate moved on to the Miss Florida competition, held at the beginning of July in Lakeland. The event, which serves as a preliminary pageant to Miss America, drew more than 48 contestants.

Hyatt looked radiant. Her makeup was perfect; her hair luminously styled. She wore a borrowed evening gown and the same twopiece swimsuit donned by all the contestants.

She nailed her talent routine, a color guard act that mixed dance with tossing and spinning a rifle. She aced her interviews. She didn’t win; didn’t make the Top 5 or the Top 11. She didn’t care. Really. And you believe her.

“When they announced the Top 5, no one backstage was devastated,” she says. “We were all just so happy to be there hanging out together. Miss Florida is a competition, but more than that it’s a sisterhood. (The pageant) is like our summer camp where we get together and have a great time.”

Heading into her second year at the University of Florida — she’s a public relations major on track to finish in three years — Hyatt is bright, articulate and supremely self-possessed. Let’s throw in modest, too. She views her pageant endeavors as exercises in personal growth, a way to make friends and build a network while conquering uncomfortable, challenging situations.

Strutting her physical beauty? Not really a thing. Consider, for instance, how she prepares.

“I don’t diet,” she says. “I lead an active lifestyle.

For me, it’s about enjoying the exercise I’m doing.”

Her three-hour rehearsals as a member of the UF marching band color guard provide plenty of physical activity, as do Zumba classes and water aerobics in the offseason. But sweating out a targeted set of exercises to shave a half-inch from her waist? Not a chance.

Asked if she scoffs at being pegged as “wholesome,” Hyatt says, delightedly, “It’s so funny you say that. When we started going shopping for Miss Florida and Miss Central Florida, I told my mom, ‘I want to go for a wholesome look.’ That sums up the image I want to project. I won’t go for anything revealing or suggestive.”

Hyatt started dance at age 2. She “always loved to talk,” according to her mother, Pam Hyatt, who owns a surveying and mapping company with her husband, Russell. (The couple also has a son, Ryan, a year younger than Samantha.) The precocious tyke was 7 when her grandmother

suggested she enter the Miss Manatee contest at the Manatee County Fair. “She did great in the interviews, and loved being on stage,” Pam Hyatt says. “I could tell she was hooked.”

The antithesis of a stage mom, Pam Hyatt never dolled up her young daughter in heavy makeup and womanly hairdos. In fact, she always considered that stuff to be creepy. “I’m the furthest thing from a pageant person,” she asserts. “When Sammy decided to go forward into the Miss America world, I got a little worried. I told her, ‘If you start not liking it anymore, or get upset by not winning, you should stop doing it.’”

But Hyatt kept on, so her mother got involved.

Enlisting a friend to help her daughter with the face paint portion, Pam Hyatt became a regular on the pageant circuit, forgoing the usual hotel room for the family motorhome. “I take notes and look at ways she can improve,” says Pam. “Sometimes she takes those ideas and sometimes she doesn’t. Sometimes, I’ll push her to do talent practice, and she’ll say, ‘Nah, don’t need to do that.’ It frustrates me a little, but I realize all this is Sammy’s thing.”

Every contestant in a Miss America pageant must pick a service platform. Hyatt, who spent her summer teaching at a preschool in Palmetto, decided to use her platform to advocate for Girl Scouts, of which she’s been a member for 13 years.

Her career plans are still undecided. She’s considered pursuing early education, but she also dreams of launching her own business, much like her mother did years ago.

First, she’d like to take one more shot at Miss Florida. After next year’s pageant, she’ll probably hang up her tiara. She walked away from this year’s competition with the Marketing Award for selling the most ads in a pageant program.

She didn’t earn a commission, but she did garner $2,000 in scholarship money — a modest sum for a wholesome contestant.

Continued from Page 40 The small, close-knit staff may not have dramatic jobs when compared to the teams of relief workers deployed to flooded Malawi villages or earthquake-devastated Nepal, but their roles are just as important. Their core task: raise money and awareness for a UK-based charity that subsists solely on donations.

“Our main objective is to inspire people to help us complete our mission of providing shelter, warmth and dignity to disaster survivors,” says Sarah Dany, volunteer program manager for ShelterBox USA. The organization, which includes four paid employees, goes after about $2 million in contributions each year.

Staff garner funds via direct appeals, presentations, events and promotions. According to Dany, 85% of the money goes into the field; the remainder is earmarked for operating costs.

Fundraising is hard enough, but raising money for disaster relief comes with an extra hurdle. People are more likely to reach for their checkbooks when disasters make headlines. Big catastrophes spark big support. Typhoons, earthquakes, hurricanes and volcanoes make the nightly news. Meanwhile, ordinary ongoing strife — a daily reality in countries all over the world — is often overlooked.

For a nonprofit like ShelterBox to mobilize quickly, its relief boxes must be purchased and prepared well beforehand.

“It’s very much of a roller coaster,” Dany says. “It can be hard to secure donations when there hasn’t been a major disaster for awhile, but what most people don’t know is that we’re deploying every two to three weeks to disasters that don’t get widespread news coverage.”

For instance, ShelterBox recently responded to flooding in Paraguay, an earthquake in Ecuador and conflict in Niger and Cameroon. The Philippines are so fraught with disasters that ShelterBox sends aid workers there every year.

Since the organization was founded in England 16 years ago, it has responded to more than 240 disasters and humanitarian crises in 90 countries. In 2002, the Rotary Club

of Lakewood Ranch adopted the charity’s stateside sector.

The brainchild of Tom Henderson, a former Royal Navy search-and-rescue diver, the nonprofit was launched to help provide the most basic necessity in times of peril: shelter. Whenever Henderson, a longtime Rotarian, saw footage of relief workers hurling loaves of bread into a crowd of survivors, he noticed that most groups focused on providing food, water and medical assistance.

“There is the disaster, then the emergency stage, and then a period of rebuilding,” Dany says. “We work very specifically in that emergency gap, in the direct aftermath. The dignity aspect is a big part of what we do.

We’re very much about empowering people who’ve lost everything. Along with the tangible items we provide, we send hope.”

So how is it that a formidable British nonprofit came to establish its U.S. headquarters in Lakewood Ranch?

It started with a group of Sarasota-area Rotarians, who discovered ShelterBox while attending an international Rotary convention in the

early 2000s. (ShelterBox and Rotary International have been bedfellows from the very beginning). At first, the Lakewood Ranch faction ran its program out of a garage on a completely volunteer basis. As local support grew for the nonprofit, the need for a permanent paid staff and office became apparent.

The Lakewood Ranch office leans on area volunteers to bring awareness to the ShelterBox mission. Sarasota real estate agent Susan Phelps serves as an official ambassador for the program. A devoted donor, last year’s earthquake in Nepal moved her to do more. In an effort to gather more support for the cause, she started giving speeches and presentations to local clubs and organizations. Her involvement even prompted her to join the Sarasota Southside Rotary Club. A member of the Sarasota Herald Toastmasters Club, public speaking comes easy. She says the real heavy lifting happens on the ground floor. “As far as being a response team member and deploying to a disaster, I could not do that,” Phelps says. “I leave that up to the really dedicated people.”

tigers and bears in your backyard? LWR Life takes a walk on East County’s wild side.

here are plenty of exotic sights in East County: $3,000 Prada handbags at Saks Fifth Avenue, multimillion dollar estates in The Lake Club, the occasional Rolls Royce, a sports celeb eating eggs at First Watch … Most of us who live, work and play in Lakewood Ranch are well acquainted with the glamorous trappings of ranch life, but what about the real exotic beasts of the southern wild — the vanishing lemurs, rescued tigers, talking parrots and endangered lions that also call East County home? Outside the tidy bounds of Lakewood Ranch, lie acres upon acres of dedicated animal sanctuaries, preserves and habitats.

Some of these remote hideaways function as off-the-grid tourist attractions; some of them simply provide asylum for threatened mammals and displaced tropical pets.

For those of you whose wild animal encounters have been limited to sandhill cranes, armadillos and swampdwelling alligators, this piece is for you. Pull on your best khakis and safari hat. Grab a pair of binoculars and take off on East County’s version of a walkabout. You’ll feel like you’re on safari a mere 10 miles from home.

TROPICAL BEARADISE For 16 years, animal trainers Johnny and Monica Welde have lived at the end of a dusty road, behind an iron gate, in the company of 13 show bears.

Until recently, few locals were aware of the Myakka City couple and their 900-pound pets. In an effort to offset the steep cost of bear food, the Weldes (of the legendary Welde Bear act) decided in 2013 to open their bucolic 15-acre “Bearadise Ranch” to the public. The far-flung property, which borders a 700-acre cattle ranch, includes a 32,000-square-foot habitat, a large wading pool and an air-conditioned bear den, where five adopted grizzlies and eight European brown bears like to sleep in late.

Open from November to May (during the Welde’s off-season), the ranch has quickly gone from an obscure hidden gem to a must-see hidden gem.

Tours are given by reservation only and include narrated demonstrations and educational presentations.

Watching these roly-poly bruins lumber around the hot, flat, East County terrain is a rare treat. From the porch of a Cracker Barrel-style gift shop/museum/snack shack, Bearadise visitors are privy to the kind of panorama you’d expect to see in Colorado: bears cooling off in a spring-fed pond, clambering on and off rocks and tussling with one another in the grass.

“It’s better than a zoo,” says Monica Welde. “We have an intimate setting out here. People say it’s relaxing.”

The ranch is so relaxing the Weldes have considered adding a bed and breakfast to the property.

The Weldes’ animals come from a long line of circus bears. Johnny is the grandson of Norwegian-born Johnny Johnson Welde, whose bears performed with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus before going on to work in television and movies in the 1950s and 1960s.

Johnny Welde’s 4-year-old brown bear Kenai will weigh between 900 and 1,200 pounds when he’s fully grown.

The first generation of Welde bears were bona-fide celebrities, appearing in “I Love Lucy,” “The Beverly Hillbillies,” “Lassie,” “National Velvet” and “Petticoat Junction,” to name a few.

Today’s pack is just as busy — and star-studded. In the early 2000s, the Welde bears appeared in director Tim Burton’s “Big Fish” and lent their likeness to the animated Disney feature “Brother Bear.” Now they mostly do car commercials, in addition to their fair work.

The Weldes, who have three children, were thrust into the international spotlight a year ago when they were featured in Britain’s Daily Mail.

The story, which featured photos of the family hanging out in Myakka City with their bear brood, grabbed the attention of several big TV producers.

Over the last six months, the couple has turned down multiple offers to film a reality show.

“We’re not a reality TV family,” Monica says. “We’re just ordinary, everyday people who live, sleep and breathe bears.”

California native Monica Welde met her husband, Johnny, while working as a production dancer at a circus in Fort Myers. “I don’t know who I fell in love with first — my husband or the bears,” says Monica.

FLOCK TREATMENT Birds of a feather squawk together at Birds of Paradise Sanctuary & Rescue (BOPS). This six-and-a-half acre parrot-dise is located way off the beaten path in rural East Bradenton. Tucked inside an old tree farm, far from the sensitive ears of residential neighbors, BOPS is a loud, proud labor of love.

Debbie Huckaby serves as the organization’s founder and executive director. She’s tasked with everything from rescuing, rehabbing and re-homing parrots, to managing the sanctuary’s two Busch Gardens-sized aviaries — home to more than 200 macaws and cockatoos.

A former credit card industry sales rep, Huckaby never dreamed she’d open a bird rescue. She always considered herself more of a cat person.

After getting her first foster parrot 10 years ago, however, the Tennessee native saw a greater need for saving our feathered friends. Parrots are notoriously abandoned, surrendered, neglected or seized in part due to their long lifespan.

A self-described “foster failure,” Huckaby took in 20 birds before she realized she needed to build a proper aviary. In 2011, she launched her nonprofit in Palmetto with only a handful of volunteers. In 2015, she moved the operation (and her home) into its current location off State Road 64.

Today, BOPS’ flock is up to 250 parrots, including six nuisance peacocks relocated from Longboat Key and two-dozen special needs birds, some of which require around-the-clock care. (These birds live inside Huckaby’s home and in small aviaries on her porch.)

Much like pound puppies, each bird comes with its own story. Many of them are riddled with self-inflicted wounds, the result of spending too much time alone in a cage. One family’s 32-year-old Amazon parrot was so sick and anxious it had picked off all but one of its feathers.

Few sanctuaries are as large or responsive as Huckaby’s organization, which is why so many bird-lovers call her when they wish to surrender a pet.

BOPS is the Taj Mahal of bird sanctuaries. An annual membership to the facility guarantees your bird room and board, excellent nutrition, superb veterinary care and quality time with Huckaby, who knows almost every one of her winged tenants by name.

“They need me as much as I need them,” says Huckaby of her ragtag flock. “They’re like children. They’re supposed to make noise. That’s how I know they’re happy and healthy.”

PRIMATE PLAYGROUND There are only two major lemur sanctuaries in the United States: Duke Lemur Center at Duke University and the Myakka City Lemur Reserve.

Spanning 130 acres, the Myakka compound is almost twice the size of the Duke reserve, which means the bulk of our country’s lemur conservation efforts happen a mere 20 minutes from Lakewood Ranch.

Supported by the Lemur Conservation Foundation (LCF), the renowned Myakka City sanctuary is so large and remote it has no definitive address.

It encompasses two 10-acre forests, thick with scrub and oak-pine vegetation, as well as mango, passion fruit, guava, banana and bamboo plants. Its wetlands feed the headwaters of the Myakka River and its campus boasts eight climate-controlled enclosures, an education center, housing for visiting scientists and dedicated space for food prep and veterinary care.

Lemurs in the rainforest don’t have it this good.

Strange, smart, screeching critters, lemurs have fascinated people for centuries. Native only to the island of Madagascar, these small, feisty prosimians are the oldest ancestors of primates that lived millions of years ago. Due to deforestation and hunting, they’ve have become scarce in the wild. Most zoos have a few in their primate exhibits. Myakka has 55, bred from six different species, including the popular ring-tailed, red-ruffed, mongoose, collared, brown and Sanford’s brown.

“There’s definitely a cute and charismatic factor that helps you connect with them,” says Dr. Alison Grand, executive director of the Lemur Conservation Foundation. “We have two critically endangered species on our property. Critically endangered is the last stage before extinction, so there’s a lot of work to be done.”

Fortunately, the Myakka colony is in the middle of a baby boom. A recordsetting eight lemurs were born this year, prompting LCF to begin fundraising for expansion into a third forest in Myakka City.

If East County is the area’s unofficial jungle, then the Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary is its unofficial jungle king.

Founded in 2005 by circus veteran Kay Rosaire, the nonprofit habitat has evolved from a grassroots-y refuge for rescued lions and tigers to a full-fledged tourist attraction complete with a petting zoo and gift shop.

Despite having to fend off years of unwarranted criticism from animal rights activists, the East Sarasota cat mecca is still one of the coolest (and kindest) places to view exotic cats.

Families from all over the country make regular pilgrimages to the 10-acre sanctuary, which is located just east of I-75 on Palmer Boulevard.

No longer a mom-and-pop menagerie of circus castoffs, the habitat is now home to a motley crew of 150 creatures, including bears, monkeys, birds, tortoises, camels, llamas, hogs and baby goats. There’s even a skunk and koi pond on the property.

The sanctuary has more than a dozen large animal complexes with adjoining exercise habitats and pools.

With construction almost complete on its new serval house, the nonprofit has begun fundraising for its next addition: a cougar compound with a cave.

Rosaire, 68, has deservedly stepped into semi-retirement. An eighthgeneration animal trainer, she spent decades in the spotlight performing with African lions, and Bengal and Siberian tigers. She rescued her first big cat in 1987 and has been committed to the cause ever since.

These days her son Clayton runs the show. The tireless father-of-two headlines the habitat’s most popular show: the Big Cat Encounter. One of the few trainers brave enough to put his head inside a lion’s mouth, Clayton is so at ease with his cats, it’s as if he’s in the ring with Garfield.

“Those of us who get to spend every day of our lives taking care of these animals feel honored,” Clayton says.

“They are family.”

Peak Performance The author conquers his fear of heights — and

maybe even has some fun — as he swings through the treetops at the area’s highest attraction.

T

he assignment was more troubling than most, and not because of the amount of research,

contacting impossible sources or dealing with a distasteful topic.

No, this one was different.

Go climb a tree.

Or, I should say, multiple trees.

I had been asked to write a review of TreeUmph!, the Lakewood Ranch area adventure park that has its patrons swinging from ropes and sliding across wires like, you guessed it, Tarzan. Every man, woman and child who had a tree fort thinks of this place as a playground on high.

But I had a slight problem. I hate heights.

Well, hate might be a strong word.

Let’s just say I have acrophobia light.

Need an example?

Years ago, when I spent a good chunk of the day climbing the Upper Yosemite Falls trail in California, I had

a little episode when I reached the top.

By the way, ever wonder why they call it “Falls?”

In any event, I reached the peak with my son, Billy, who then wanted to do as is the custom when you complete the 3,000-foot climb in elevation. It was time to stand on the overlook and peer over the valley.

The overlook, in this case, was kind of a sidewalk bolted into the side of the cliff. Directly under that sidewalk was nothing, for a few thousand feet.

As Billy hurried toward the edge of the cliff, my feet turned to concrete. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t even watch.

“I’ll wait for you here,” I told my teenager, who went forward without me. I spun around and faced the opposite direction so I wouldn’t have to watch him negotiate the precipice of death.

Call it acrophobia, call it chicken.

Sometimes you have to accept, the die is cast.

Ever since, I’ve spent my time staying away from the side of balconies — just so no one could accidentally bump me over the side — and rolling down window shades in airplanes. What you can’t see, can’t hurt you.

So here I was, just off State Road 70, standing with TreeUmph! owner Aaron Corr as he strapped me into Continued on Page 66

Oh joy.

Corr, who is a Maine native, and his wife, Kathy, who grew up in New Brunswick, Canada, are somewhat spiders when it comes to climbing.

They moved to Montana at one point so the Rockies would be handy.

“We’re climbers who have spent a lot of time in the mountains on ropes,” says a very happy Corr, who then yanked on a pair of straps to tighten my harness, for my own safety, of course.

Like all good ideas, the idea for TreeUmph! started as someone else’s, a similar park that had been built just outside the Corrs’ backyard in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada.

They eventually moved to Florida ... call them fair weather climbers ... and began planning TreeUmph! by purchasing 14 acres on its present site.

Working their way through various infrastructure obstacles, the Corrs opened TreeUmph! in January of 2012 with a slogan of “The ground is overrated.”

“Things have been going gangbusters since,” Aaron Corr says. “We have people of all abilities every single day. Most are afraid of heights.”

Well, Aaron, introduce me to them and we’ll meet you back at the snack shop.

I was strapped tightly into a harness, so it was too late to turn back.

“It’s progressive out here,” Corr says. “There is something for everyone. We have 87-year-olds who show up.”

Yes, but do they drive away?

I was finally ready, courage-wise, to tackle the course. As I headed toward my first ladder, Corr gave me the big no-no. Before anyone steps on his course, they must complete a 15-minute safety film.

Since I didn’t want to embarrass myself on the course, outside my own lack of coordination, I didn’t have any trouble paying attention during the film. I didn’t want to be the goofball on the course who was getting expelled for a safety transgression. In reality, the rules were easy to learn. And if I

forgot, I just asked the 11-year-old in front of me.

At one point, we were taught the most important phrase at the park: “Guide! Guide! Guide!�

This is the park’s safety phrase, a loud signal that you have been pushed to your limit and can take no more. “There is no shame here stopping wherever you want,� Corr says. “Being rescued is a huge part of the experience. People get tired, and when they reach their limit, they usually are off the ground.�

Finally, it was time to test the course, and my safety harness and I climbed the first ladder. Every harness has two safety cables and another cable with a pulley for the zip lines.

You never are on the course without at least one cable attached. I clipped and unclipped myself up the ladder and across a wire bridge, reaching my first zip line.

Upon receiving the “all clear� from the 11-year-old in front of me, I triumphantly started to zip between trees, feeling the euphoria that only comes

upon soaring to new heights. This wasn’t bad at all.

As I had just about completed my first run, I looked into the face of one of the guides. Yes, this particular cable was only about six feet off the ground.

Before you start tackling the real challenges at TreeUmph! you have to complete the instructional course.

Skiers would think of it as the bunny slope.

Onward and upward, I began the real deal, climbing up ladders and walking across “bridges� that were wires or moving slats of wood. I would reach out with my right foot and my base would take my left foot back the other way. To prevent myself from doing a split, I would have to increase my pressure of my hands holding a wire above.

Before you start the course, you are given a pair of gloves. My advice is to wear them. They come in very handy when you are grasping wires.

Having lived a little, I did understand that I needed to balance myself with my feet better than what I

was accomplishing. Every time I was pulled off balance, I had to utilize upper body strength. In the early stages, it really is no big deal. Over the course, though, it can become exhausting.

I had only negotiated the first of five courses and, already, I could tell exhaustion was going to be a problem.

It didn’t help that I was breathing harder than the kids around me. On the second course, I turned and told a 16-year-old girl behind me that she could pass if she wanted to go faster.

No, she was having too much fun watching me struggle. I think people had opened an over-under pool on how long I would last before shouting ... “Guide! Guide! Guide!�

As you move from one course to another, you can see “climbers� of all ages and abilities. I started to relax knowing a lot of park patrons were in the same boat, trying to decide when they were going to bail out. Continued from Page 67 shift bridges, scaling the rope nets as quickly as possible and snapping and unsnapping those safety cables as if they were linemen for the power company.

The facial expressions are all the same. Intense concentration on the obstacles, and healthy smiles upon completing a “game.”

The park generally serves about 400 people a day, and certainly during the summer, most arrive in the morning. Hydration is key and there is water everywhere. Based on how far you progress, the experience can last between two and four hours.

The Corrs get out on their own course as much as possible, but it’s more of a workout for them. “It’s second nature to me,” Aaron Corr says.

“For most people, though, it’s completely a new experience. They have no idea what they are in for. And when they finish a section, they have a real sense of pride.”

I can honestly say I had no idea.

Holding on a wire above me, I kept

my eyes looking downward as my feet tried to coordinate each step so I wouldn’t twist my body into an uncomfortable yoga position. It was awkward to say the least.

Then, as I had just completed another obstacle, I had a revelation.

As irritated as I had become with myself for feeling so uncoordinated, I never worried about height. Here I was, at the top of the trees, and I had absolutely no anxiety. I was so busy trying to balance myself, and I felt so safe locked inside this harness, any fear I might have carried with me disintegrated.

My fatigue, though, did not disintegrate. I decided I wasn’t going to make it through the entire course, and made a graceful exit to the final zip line, choosing not to surrender in the middle of a course to “Guide! Guide!

Guide!”

As I headed to the grand finale, I understood why TreeUmph! is certain to get a lot of return business. Those who complete the course are likely to want to do it faster. Reduced rates are available for frequent fliers. Those

who don’t complete the course, want to come back and go farther. I certainly will give it another try, perhaps on a bit cooler day.

Even though you don’t complete the course, everyone is allowed to ride the final 650-foot zip line. I climbed the ladder and waited for a guide to give me the all clear.

Then I was off, soaring above the land, and above my fears.

The 2017 World Rowing Championships are expected to draw 40,000 people to Nathan Benderson Park.

Meredith Scerba is keeping the massive planning process afloat.

M

eredith Scerba’s passion for water sports began without a boat.

It goes back to when she was a champion swimmer in high school in Pinehurst, N.C., and at the University of Findlay, a Division II college in Ohio.

Her specialties were the 200-meter individual medley and 400-meter individual medley.

Scerba has since shifted her passion to another water sport: rowing.

The 37-year-old East County resident is the director of the 2017 World Rowing Championships, scheduled for Sept. 23-Oct. 1, 2017 at Nathan Benderson Park. The event is an official international rowing regatta from the sport’s governing body, the International Rowing Federation. It’s the sport’s marquee event, with representation from at least 1,000 Olympic-caliber athletes from more than 70 countries. It’s the first time in 22 years that the World Rowing Championships will be held in the United States. (Indianapolis hosted the event in 1994.)

“Sarasota has done something for rowing in America that is truly remarkable — creating, from scratch, a world-class rowing venue that will attract athletes from around the world,” USRowing CEO Glen Merry said in a Sept. 1, 2013 statement.

Now the potential and pressure to perform lies with Scerba. Behind her is a small army of paid staffers and a projected 1,000 volunteers. “We have such big expectations to set a new standard in the U.S. for rowing,” Scerba says. “We don’t want it to be another 23 years before it’s held in the U.S. again.”

But while the championships are the finish line, there’s a large swath of activity planned starting in September, a year before the first rowers hit the water. That includes a monthly series of community programs to get area residents involved in not only understanding rowing, but also general health and wellness. And it also includes creating an atmosphere where rowers from other countries, and their families and supporters, Continued on Page 74

The Suncoast Aquatic Nature Center Associates, a nonprofit that manages Benderson Park, hired Scerba in October 2015. She reports to the SANCA board, in addition to Sarasota and Manatee County officials. She also reports to the International Rowing Federation (FISA) because the actual event keeps its own financial accounting, separate from SANCA or any governing body.

Scerba comes to the gig with significant experience in big-time sporting events. She spent the previous decade with the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission, where she ran marketing and operations. Among many successes in Cleveland, Scerba recruited and then oversaw more than 1,000 volunteers for the NCAA Women’s Final Four in 2007. She also worked in events for the Cleveland Cavaliers for two years.

It wasn’t only her experience, but her enthusiasm that won over the SANCA board. “Her charisma, smile and positive attitude stood out,” says outgoing SANCA President Paul Blackketter, who plans to resign his position by early fall. “It was clear she was really someone who could put together a team.”

fice on the Benderson Park grounds on a muggy July afternoon, says building a dream team is at the top of her to-do list. She plans to double her staff from 10 people to 20 by the end of 2016. One of her more prominent hires is Max Winitz, a weekend anchor from ABC 7 in Sarasota, named communications and public relations manager in May. Two other key personnel moves were naming Rod Hershberger and Ed Chiles co-chairmen of the championships. Hershberger is CEO of Venice-based impact resistant door and window manufacturer PGT Inc., one of the largest employers in the region.

Chiles is the son of former Florida Gov. Lawton Chiles and the owner of three restaurants on Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key, including the Sandbar.

Hershberger, the Sarasota County chair, and Chiles, the Manatee County chair, will serve as the regatta’s most ardent cheerleaders.

Both executives will attend quarterly meetings hosted by the event’s Local Organizing Committee, an organizational behemoth consisting of eight sub-groups and other committees. “The ability to get the entire community behind an event with so many tentacles is really important to me,” Hershberger says.

ROUGH WATERS

There have been some hiccups in rallying full community support in the early days of planning.

One issue: East Manatee County residents have voiced concerns about event-related traffic. The interstate near the Mall at UTC is already congested. Local and state officials are attempting to address the situation by turning the University Parkway exit into a diverging diamond, designed to ease the flow of cars. It’s a $74.5 million project, the first of its kind in the state, and is projected to be ready before the championships.

Scerba plans to raise capital by soliciting donations from private citizens and community organizations.

The Nathan Benderson Park Foundation is simultaneously raising money for rowing park-related projects, though not directly for the 2017 championships. Some of the funds provided by state and local government have drawn criticism from area residents who feel other projects could use the support.

Funding and traffic woes have lingered for months, but organizers are not derailed. “I know there’s a little bit of division,” Hershberger says. “But let’s give it a chance. This is a world championship. To have this happen in Sarasota-Manatee is a huge win for the community.”

According to Najmy, it has “everything imaginable for a chef.” A custom-designed, hand-forged iron chandelier gives the space a luminous glow, one-upping the kitchens of some of the most seasoned Italian cooks.

The home’s backyard oasis has a flat-panel TV, stone fireplace, gas lanterns, a sound bar and state-of-the-art kitchen. Many of the features in the home’s courtyard are operated by remote control, including its fire bowls, pool and spa. You won’t see any palms on the property because Villa Lago Eterno was landscaped with trees that originated in Italy.

It went on the market in June and is being sold with all its furniture.

“This house is meant for somebody who is definitely in love with Italy,” Goldstein says. “If it’s a person who loves small Tuscan towns, Italian influences and finishes, they will love this type of home.”

n the spirit of going green, do not spend big bucks on bug banishers at your local garden center when you have many, if not all of the ingredients for DIY pesticides in your kitchen cupboards. I don’t know about you, but I’m not a fan of dousing my garden in chemicals — especially my vegetable garden. I am, however, a big fan of going organic and saving money, so let me show you how you can use some of your favorite cooking staples to keep Florida’s creepycrawlies from destroying your plants.

COOKING OIL + DISH SOAP

My favorite is what I call the 1-2-2. Mix one gallon of water with two tablespoons of cooking oil and two tablespoons of non-degreasing dish soap. It controls aphids, spider mites, thrips, whiteflies, lace bugs, scale insects and mealybugs. If fungus is among us, add two tablespoons of baking soda to the mixture; then shake and spray every five to seven days. Your concoction can be used on roses infected with black spot and mildew, summer squash covered in powdery mildew, tomatoes with early blight and melons with alternaria leaf blight. For a more all-purpose bug spray, take two gallons of warm water; add two tablespoons of vinegar, canola oil and Murphy’s oil soap, and three tablespoons of baking soda.

Mist-spray until your plant is dripping wet.

Orchids are a fickle and delicate flower. And like all fickle and delicate flowers, they respond well to a little spice, specifically cinnamon, which sterilizes the plant’s leaves. Shake it on leaves affected with fungus when the plant is damp, allowing the leaves to dry for about one week.

AMMONIA + LEMON DISH SOAP

This quick and easy mosquito repellent is for your yard. Mix one cup of lemon-scented dish soap with one cup of lemon-scented ammonia.

Set your hose sprayer to 20 gallons and shower your plants with the mixture three times a week.

OLIVE OIL

If mosquitos are breeding in your rain barrel, just drop one tablespoon of olive oil onto the water’s surface. The oil will smother the mosquito larvae. It doesn’t get any easier than this.

PEPPER SPRAY

Pepper spray doesn’t just ward off human attackers; it chases away bugs. Mix one gallon of water with two tablespoons of red pepper spice and six drops of dish soap. Let it sit overnight

PETROLEUM JELLY

SENSIBLE SPRAYING n DO spray both sides of the leaves and stems n DON’T spray in the sun n DO spray in the evening or early morning n DON’T use oil on orchids n DO water your plants before spraying

Fly strips are ugly, but guess what? They work.

Make youf own by coating yellow index cards in petroleum jelly and hanging them near your plants. If you’ve got nowhere to hang the cards, try setting out a yellow container coated with petroleum jelly. Why yellow? Whiteflies are attracted to the color. They’ll stick to the jelly and die a slow slimy death.

BEER

Host a happy hour for slugs and snails by filling a shallow saucer or pan with beer. They’ll come in for a swig and drown. They’ll be so drunk they’ll never know what hit them.

SUGAR

Let’s not end on a grisly note. Sometimes you want to attract bugs to your garden. Here’s how to lure in the good guys like ladybugs: mix one quart of water with five ounces of sugar and apply with a watering can wherever aphids are a problem. Beneficial insects deserve a reward for all their hard work!
