After spending more than 20 years working in pediatrics as an occupational therapist, Kim Strunk was frustrated with what she called “the gap.” “The kids I had on my caseload needed more intensity than I could provide,” Strunk said. “There was an absolute lack of resources.” So in 2005, Strunk founded Homefront Learning Center in Kokomo, Indiana, which soon afterward became Hopebridge Autism Therapy Centers. Florida is about to be introduced to Hopebridge as the company will expand into the state with 30 centers that will provide more than 1,500 jobs. The first center — Hopebridge Sarasota — is scheduled to open Oct. 1 at 8027 Cooper Creek Blvd., Suite 103, University Park. “We spend time identifying communities, and we are super excited about this first clinic (in Florida),” said Strunk, who serves as her company’s chief clinical officer. “This is a huge, underserved community. You find that across the nation, and it’s what is driving our expansion.” Florida is the seventh state to have Hopebridge clinics, join-

ing Indiana, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Kentucky and Ohio. The company will have 75 total facilities by the end of this year. Strunk said her Hopebridge’s research showed that more than 50% of Florida children with autism spectrum disorder currently are on a waiting list to receive therapy. She said 25% of Florida children who have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder waited more than six months to be diagnosed. In 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that approximately one in 54 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Strunk said the Sarasota center will be approximately 15,000 square feet. The existing space was gutted and rebuilt. She said it will host 55-60 children at a time and approximately 70 therapists. The therapy sessions usually run 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily based on an 18- to 24-month program.

Chalk it up to history Eight-foot-tall monument will record intimate thoughts about 9/11. JAY HEATER MANAGING EDITOR
A
month after Brandon Gundrum had moved to Florida, he remembered being in class at Tara Elementary School when news of the World Trade Center attacks began to emerge. He was only 5 at the time, but Sept. 11, 2001, made an impact on him he never will forget. “I remember a lot of people were panicking,” he said of the moment. “Then we started getting calls from family (from his former home of Rochester, New York).” Twenty years later, a little project came across Gundrum’s desk at Willis Smith Construction. Gundrum, who works in preconstruction, was asked to find subcontractors and the materials to build a monument that would be 4 feet long, 4 feet wide and 8 feet high. On all four exterior sides of the monument would be chalkboards for people to write down their memories and feelings about 9/11. The monument would be placed adjacent to Lakewood Main Street beginning Sept. 2 and would remain there 10 days. Willis Smith Construction and Fawley Bryant Architecture, which just finished working on Waterside Place together, would donate the monument to help lead up to the 9/11 Day of Remembrance memorial Sept. 11 at Main Street at Lakewood Ranch. “I thought it would be a straightforward task,” Gundrum said. “But I knew it needed to be placed outside during the rainy season and that it would be hot. The cube would need to be durable and be able to last. Getting the right chalkboards was important because you don’t want to cut into something and have it shatter like glass.” Gundrum began to reach out to local subcontractors to build

the monument, and the answer was the same: No. Everyone was buried with work. He widened his range from Tampa to North Port. The answer was still the same. “I was sure someone would want to take it on, but I found out that we would need to have each individual piece made, and we would have to put it together. We had to line up all the materials coming to us at the same time, and everything had to be exact measurements.” Willis Smith Project Manager Angel Ortiz Jr. could see the little monument project was turning into a rather difficult assignment. That didn’t matter. Ortiz grew up in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan, and his father, Angel Ortiz Sr., was working at his office on Fifth Avenue when the planes struck the World Trade Center towers. “It hit close to home,” Angel Ortiz Jr. said. Ortiz was working the end of the night shift on Sept. 11, 2001, renovating a Publix in Cape Coral. Knowing his father wasn’t far away from the World Trade Cen-

ter, he immediately tried to call, without any luck. Fortunately, his dad reached him soon afterward to tell him he was OK. He will never forget those anxious moments, and so the monument took on major project status, even if he had to put other duties aside. “The construction time frame was difficult,” Ortiz said. “It is right at the beginning of school, and chalkboards are hard to find.” Ortiz had to find signs that could be placed at the top of the monument on the four outwardfacing sides. That wasn’t easy with a two-week timespan for completion. He eventually found a company in Cary, Illinois, that sold chalkboards. Ortiz explained his problem, and BillyBoards came through with the needed material. Then he needed welding done on the monument’s frame. He went to Icon Welding and Fabrication of Sarasota. Icon Welding Owner Mike Norrito told him, “I want a piece of this.” He got hold of Bill King of King Signs of Sarasota and explained the rush. King came through as well. “I had to ask for favors,” Ortiz said. Willis Smith carpenters Steve Redhead and Rick Baker were pulled off jobs to help with construction. They had to figure out how to anchor the monument, which would be attached to a base. Involved in the entire process was James Hugglestone II, a senior project architect with Fawley Bryant Architecture. After being told the concept, he designed several iterations. At first, Hugglestone was asked to design a monument that could be dismantled and folded away. Ultimately, the aluminum box frame monument was made more rigid but still could be disassembled and used again. Hugglestone knew there would be material constraints because of the pandemic, but like Ortiz, he thought the monument’s purpose was too important to drop the project. He was working in Tampa on Sept. 11, 2001, and he remembers the shock that affected everyone. “It became a not-very-productive day,” he said. He knew the monument project “would have heartstrings” attached to it. “I can’t wait to see it (on the street),” he said. “It will be enlightening, emotional.” Eventually, the monument became a $5,000 project even with all the labor donated. Several companies and individuals had a hand in making it happen at a difficult time. “I would tell someone I needed it in two weeks, and they would say, ‘So I need to stop my production line?’” Ortiz said. “I would say, ‘Yes, it’s 9/11.’” Gundrum said people of all ages will be able to take something away from the monument. “The impact is just as great whether you were born at the time or not,” he said. “Everyone has family, and a lot of families were impacted.”

Dr. Mona Jain Middle School, which opened two years ago, already is close to capacity. “There’s no way with the number of (housing) permits pulled out in the east part of the county that we’re going to be able to keep up with it,” Saunders said. “(The new K-8 school) was slated to come online in about four years. There’s no way. From the time you start to design to get it finished, you’re looking at two to three years. We need it ready to be populated. We need to start this year.” The tentative plan includes additions at Braden River and Lakewood Ranch high schools; Braden River, Carlos E. Haile and R. Dan Nolan middle schools; and Freedom and Tara elementary schools to help with overcrowding at some schools and increase capacity at the schools. With new additions at Braden River and Lakewood Ranch high schools, Saunders hopes the district can hold off on constructing a new high school in East County until at least fiscal year 2027. “We don’t want to have to pull the trigger on it until we have to because that’s just such an expensive item,” Saunders said. “We would rather get all these other projects and things in place. None of the new growth is going to eliminate our existing commitments of older school renovations. Those have to be done because we have to make sure that everyone has an equal facility.” Saunders said many middle schools were built for around 800 students, but with the growth the county is seeing, middle schools should be constructed for about

1,200 students. Many high school capacities sit around 1,700 to 1,800 students, but Saunders said the schools should have space for 2,000 to 2,200 students. Elementary schools should be constructed for about 800 students, Saunders said. Also to help with the acceleration of capital projects, the School Board of Manatee County unanimously approved last October a resolution that allows the district to borrow up to $100 million in certificates of participation for capital projects. “By doing this, not only are

we avoiding inflationary costs, which last year they were running 7% and more recently from construction firms its running more 9% with some materials, but we’re also pulling projects forward in the timeline so the students, staff and community all benefit from these projects much sooner than later,” Bargeron said. Lakewood Ranch Commercial has signed another fitness facility for its Waterside Place hub as Texasbased Bodybar Pilates has targeted March for a new franchise opening. Kamille McCollum, the president and COO of Bodybar Franchising, said the Waterside Place location at 7600 Island Cove Terrace, Suite 102, will be its first studio in Florida with three more franchises planned (two in Tampa and one in Orlando). “Florida is a lot like Texas,” McCollum said. “It is friendly to small business owners and has a lot of people who are active.” Bodybar was founded in 2012 and is based around reformer Pilates, which incorporates a reformer apparatus that resembles a bedlike frame on a flat platform and uses springs for resistance. However, McCollum said Bodybar has its own take on the system, using more intensity and cardio bursts, training off or to the side of the machine, and using techniques to get the heart rate up and to build muscle endurance. The company currently has franchises in Texas, Utah and Georgia. McCollum said she is excited about making Lakewood Ranch her company’s first franchise in Florida. “It is beautiful, and I know the

area is full of active people,” she said. She said Pilates has remained fresh because instructors can be creative and develop their own routines. Bodybar continuously works on new programs to pass along to its instructors. “Pilates has been around since the 1940s, but it has evolved,” she said. Businesses are expected to begin opening in Waterside Place in October, about six months after the anticipated opening as the COVID-19 pandemic has made construction materials scarce and slowed down the build-outs. Michael Demarski’s 3Form Fitness is expected to be the first business to open early in October. Waterside Place is built on a 36-acre peninsula and sits on mile-long Kingfisher Lake. When complete, the development will feature 862 luxury apartments and town homes. It features 60,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space.

t was 1973 when a 13-year-old Don Woodruff was driving a loader and working a sewer installation job near Holmes Beach. A man in the neighborhood saw the boy and yelled to him that he couldn’t be operating that machinery. Woodruff kept working, so the man called the Holmes Beach Police Department. It wasn’t long before Police Chief Snooks Adams arrived at the scene. The man ran to Adams and said, “That’s a kid running that machine.” Woodruff still remembers Adams telling the man, “The best thing you can do is go back inside and let him do his job.” Adams knew the Woodruff family, from the oldest to the youngest, had construction in their blood. Woodruff & Sons had expanded its business from Michigan City, Indiana, to Florida and had emerged as a major player in underground infrastructure on Anna Maria Island. After making the move to Florida, Roy Woodruff, who had established the business in 1946 with his dad, William, and his brother, Louis, had to rely on his sons, Don and Bruce, and his daughter, Linda, to help get the job done. It was all hands on deck as they tried to get established in a new location. Adams knew Don Woodruff was competent driving heavy machinery, even if he did follow him around the island at times when Don was driving a tanker, just to make sure he was OK. Of course, he was. As Bradenton-based Woodruff & Sons celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2021, members of the family will be sharing many such stories of the early days. Their annual picnic will be a huge affair this particular year as they celebrate at the company headquarters (6450 31st St. E., Bradenton) on Oct. 23. Parrish’s Linda Wakeman remembered her elementary school days in Michigan City when her dad, Roy Woodruff, would put her in the car to drive the area, lighting smudge pots, which at the time were used as a warning device at construction sites. Once the smudge pots were checked, it was time for ice cream. When her younger brothers reached the age of 9, their playground became construction yards where they could drive trucks. One brother would work the pedals, and the other would steer. They were preparing for the future, and they didn’t know it. It’s been the family way since 1946, and it figures to continue for years to come, even if the prepa-

ration is a bit different. Linda Wakeman’s son, Chad Wakeman of Mill Creek, is being groomed to take over when Don and Bruce Woodruff eventually retire. “I grew up with little trucks in the sandbox,” Chad Wakeman said. “When I was young, I remember sitting on the floor at night, separating (pay)checks while watching TV.” Unlike his uncles, who were needed after they graduated from Manatee High School to help run the company, Chad Wakeman earned a degree in civil engineering from the University of Florida in 2007. But he said he learned the key ingredients about Woodruff & Sons from his family members. “They care, … they are truthful, … they have integrity,” he said. “They get in the hole and work with the guys.” Well, his mom might not get in the hole, but even she has to “wear the hard hat” at times when it comes to the company’s office work and dealing with employees. Those living in the Lakewood Ranch area might not be familiar with the Woodruffs and Wakemans, but they are familiar with their work. The company has handled high-profile road projects including the Lorraine Road and Lakewood Ranch Boulevard extensions and the underground
infrastructure at Main Street at Lakewood Ranch and San Marco Plaza. Don Woodruff said those who drive the roads probably are more familiar with roads they didn’t build, or roads that were built over underground infrastructure they didn’t construct. He noted that sometimes when you drive a road, you notice a series of dips. “We pay attention, so you don’t see that in our jobs,” he said. “If you do, it will be corrected. Roads ride terrible when they aren’t done properly. We drive these roads every day, and we are very proud of the work we do. This is our home.” For 75 years, hard work has been a trademark of the business. “My dad was one of 12,” Linda Wakeman said. “He quit school in the 10th grade because he needed to make money.” After serving during World War II, Roy Woodruff bought a bulldozer and started the business. Don Woodruff said his family never lost sight of its modest beginnings. He said the company never grew out of control. In 2007, Woodruff & Sons learned another important lesson. They had many projects with private builders when the economy sagged. Those builders pulled the plug on projects. The lesson was to keep a mix with municipal projects. They also have tried to keep a family atmosphere in running their company when it comes to employees. Woodruff & Sons seldom take jobs more than an hour away from Bradenton so their workers can be with their families at the end of a day. The company currently has 160 employees. They use mostly full-time employees because they want them to stay for the long term. Seven current employees have worked for Woodruff & Sons more than 40 years. When the company picnic is held in a few weeks, all the employees will be able to select new boots from a Red Wing truck. “It benefits us to keep up our relationships with the employees,” Don Woodruff said. Today, sewers and underground utilities remain Woodruff & Sons’ main line of work, and Don Woodruff doesn’t see any slowdowns in the future. Whatever they face, a family member will be there. “It’s in our blood,” Wakeman said.

Air Force veteran Eugene Vaadi, who flew missions in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, died Aug. 28 at the age of 100.
East County war hero dies at 100 his fellow crew members were tortured much of the time they spent in the Chinese prison, often on a daily basis. Vaadi never received any treatment for the shrapnel injuries he suffered in his plane being shot down. He was beaten with sticks and deprived of sleep. Is it painful to hear such stories? Of course. Is it important? I think so. Also painful to me was the fact Vaadi was never awarded a Purple Heart. That didn’t bother him, and he never mentioned it, but it did bother me. How could someone who had sacrificed so much not have been given the award he deserved? I went to retired Army Col. Gill Ruderman of Braden River VFW Post 12055 to see if he could help. He prepared the necessary information and took it all the way to the U.S. Army Human Resources Command in Fort Knox, Kentucky, which eventually decides whether the Purple Heart will be rewarded. The pandemic slowed the process, but eventually Ruderman was told that Vaadi’s injuries weren’t documented. If you don’t believe a man who served in three wars about the injuries and torture he sustained, how about a fellow crew member? In a 2010 article by Matthew Waller of the San Angelo, Texas Standard-Times, Vaadi was

in North Korea, a standard war practice at the time. United Nations archives contain all the accusations and explanations. It is fascinating, true life drama. With the passing of Vaadi, we have lost another precious resource that connects us to our past. Sometimes we don’t realize we should be tapping into those resources until it is too late. Although Vaadi did document many of his experiences in his self-published book, “Wings and War,” it is surprising to me his story hasn’t been turned into a movie. According to the American Air Museum in Britain, his B-17 — The Leading Lady — was shot down near Ruhland, Germany, on March 2, 1945, during his 19th mission over Germany. The aircraft was flying about 28,000 feet when it was shot up and began to burn. At 16,000 feet, the aircraft started to go out of control, rolled and exploded. The force blew Vaadi out of the plane, but his chute opened, and he made it to the ground, where he was immediately captured. About a month after his capture, he was marched 75 miles to Stalag VII in Moosburg, Germany, but was fortunate the war soon ended. That would have been just the warmup to a possible movie. The imprisonment in China would take much more time to adequately cover. Vaadi and
interviewed along with his copilot, Wallace Brown. Brown said in the article they went through interrogations, some lasting a week at a time, and they were required to stand the entire time. Brown said the interrogators would thump their eyes if they shut them with the purpose of keeping them awake. “Your body was swollen up until you can’t feed yourself. The torture was the standing, and the kicking and the beating and the thumping, to keep you awake,” Brown said in the article. Although Vaadi has died, I would hope the U.S. Army Human Resources Command will reverse its position. Born July 1, 1921, in Watertown, New York, Vaadi is survived by his wife, Marguerite Morrison Vaadi; his three children, Jean Anne (Bernard), Donna (Ernest) and Michael (Karen); his sister, Margaret; six
grandchildren; and five greatgrandchildren. His family notes he was active in many groups (Masons, Elks, American Legion, among others) and he enjoyed the occasional glass of Johnny Walker. A memorial Mass and celebration will be held at a future date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, people are asked to donate to the Shriners Hospitals for Children in Tampa or a favorite charity. He will be buried at Sarasota National Cemetery.

was hoping to get retired Air Force Lt. Col. Eugene Vaadi to ride in the 2020 Tribute to Heroes parade in Lakewood Ranch. But with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the parade was canceled. Then came 2021, and the pandemic persisted, and again, no parade. Now that opportunity has passed. East County’s Vaadi, a true war hero, died Aug. 28 at the age of 100. In July 2019, I was fortunate enough to visit with Vaadi, who talked about some of his amazing war experiences. Not only did Vaadi fly missions in three wars, but he was also shot down and imprisoned in two, World War II and Korea. He also flew missions in Vietnam. It was during the Korean War when Vaadi was shot down in his B-29 along the Chinese border and was held captive, along with his surviving 10 crew members, for two and a half years before finally being released in August 1955. It took the United Nations to eventually convince China to release the crew. The international incident became complicated because the Chinese government accused Vaadi and his crew of espionage. The U.S. explanation of that particular flight’s mission was to drop psychological leaflets

Please stop expansion I read that UTC’s East District is expanding (“To putt it mildly,” Aug. 26). Isn’t that special. More shops and restaurants are just what we all need. Sadly, I won’t be visiting any of them. While I only live a mile away, I know what traffic is like around the mall now. Can you imagine how much more congested it will be? Venti gets to the point of his art ANDRÉA MARTONE A+E EDITOR
I
f ever Art Venti realized he was destined to take a path toward becoming a prominent artist, it was at the age of 5 while watching a syndicated TV series from the 1950s. “Learn to Draw,” popular from 1950 to 1955, featured 15-minute drawing lessons from instructor Jon Gnagy and encouraged children to purchase an art kit that included a book, sketching paper, drawing pencils, sketching chalks and one laptop drawing surface. Glued to his family’s blackand-white television in New York City with his drawing kits, Venti began an early love with colored pencils that would span nearly 70 years and include being named a top-five finalist in a juried art exhibit by icon Salvador Dalí for the 15-yearold’s creative rendition of the “Mona Lisa.” Now the 72-year-old Sarasota transplant still relies his
colored pencils in hand, but his art has exhibited and sold nationally and internationally over the past 30 years, including a $5,000 cash buy in the 1980s from a San Francisco financial and real estate mogul who was wowed by a drawing called “Time Continuum.” Art lovers will appreciate the upcoming Art Center Sarasota exhibition “Probable Realities” from Sept. 2 to Oct. 2, which features his work of largescale, vividly colored, dreamlike underwater landscapes on paper using — what else? — colored pencils. Venti said the inspiration behind his surrealist techniques came from Dalí and other wellknown artists “who explore the mysterious worlds that lurk just beneath the conscious mind.” The result is intensely detailed, amorphous shapes evoking dreamscapes of twisted white bedsheets, swirling ribbons or underwater plants that bring forth a sense of wonder and awe. His work ranges from small,
light, sketchy areas of fragile, almost translucent, wispy lines and shapes that are barely there to the main area of the canvas covered with intense, dense layering. To understand how Venti’s creative mind flows is to revisit his childhood. While children his age played with Lego and building blocks, 5-year-old Venti was building a custom bed loft in his room to accommodate a desk underneath for sketching. He also created an elaborate diorama of an Egyptian city. “I swear I was Egyptian from a past life,” he said. At age 12, he built yet another elaborate diorama of prehistoric dinosaurs roaming through an idyllic landscape in New Hampshire where his parents owned a summer family farm. The local newspaper featured his diorama on the cover of its publication, praising the young, budding artist. When Venti turned 16, New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller met the high school sophomore

after he won a statewide safety poster contest. His creations continued to blossom during his adolescence. Jon Haskins’ debut as The Outof-Door Academy football coach ended two quarters earlier than expected. Trailing 25-0 against visiting Southwest Florida Christian on Aug. 26, and after the Thunder suffered two significant injuries that required stretchers, the two schools agreed to end the contest early. ODA offensive linemen Chase Povlichak (knee) and Blaine Bentley (arm) suffered injuries that will keep them out for an undetermined time. Haskins said he had first suspected both players would be out for the season, but he now expects both to be able to return. Haskins and SFC Coach Bill Moore decided to stop the game at halftime out of an abundance of caution, even though the Thunder players wanted to play the second half. “It was tough,” ODA senior wide receiver/cornerback Ashton Lamb said. “We definitely wanted to finish the rest of the game. But we need to keep that game in the past now. We’re a young team,

We’re going to keep getting better in the following weeks.” Losing two lineman will cause problems for a Thunder squad that has little depth in terms of linemen. The ODA offense had trouble moving the ball even with its starting offensive line intact. Senior Connor Pope, who switched to quarterback this season, had no time to throw, and senior running back Grady Paxton had no room to maneuver, either. Through two quarters, ODA gained only 51 yards, and Pope scrambled for 26 of those yards. The Thunder defense kept the

Kings at bay early but began to wear down after spending most of the half on the field due to ODA’s very short offensive possessions. ODA’s one highlight reel play was called back. Junior defensive back Ashton Lamb intercepted a pass from SFC sophomore quarterback Eli Moore at the goal line and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown, but the return was negated by a block in the back penalty. After those two quarters, it is apparent ODA needs to make significant strides to be competitive. Haskins said the process to build ODA into a contender will take time. The lack of continuity in the coaching staff is just one problem, he said. “Kids need that stabilization,” Haskins said. “Look at coaches who have been at their programs for a long time. They get to know their kids well, and those kids only have to worry about one variable, which is getting better (instead of learning a new system). We’ve had three head coaches in three years here. We have to stop doing that for the kids’ sake.”

Success sculpted from the sand L
akewood Ranch High junior Ashley Pater has committed to the nation’s top collegiate beach volleyball program. USC, the reigning NCAA beach volleyball champion that has won three of the past five championships overall, has offered Pater a scholarship. The Trojans weren’t alone in chasing Pater. UCLA, which won the two national championships not claimed by USC in the past five seasons, also offered Pater a scholarship in June, the first time programs could offer a scholarship during an athlete’s junior year of high school. The sport was sanctioned by the NCAA in 2015. Pater said she ultimately chose USC because of her rapport with the program’s coaching staff and the beauty of the school’s downtown Los Angeles campus. When the offers arrived, Pater was thrilled but not surprised. She had been working hard for that moment for almost her entire life. Pater said her family wanted her and her older sister, Brooke, to try as many sports as possible as a child. They both landed on volleyball, and after a few years of playing both indoor and
beach volleyball, they decided to transition to beach volleyball full time. For Pater, who is 5-foot-8, the move allowed her to focus on being a defensive dynamo, patrolling the back line of the court and nabbing anything that gets past her block-focused partner. She began to excel. Pater said it is her vision that sets her apart from other players. “For example, if you watch the hitter drop her elbow and read that correctly, you don’t have to be super quick,” Pater said. “If I see that, I know they are probably going to hit it directly over the blocker, so it’s going to be up to me.” The Paters had a beach volleyball court built in their backyard four years ago to help both Ashley and Brooke, a senior at Lakewood Ranch High who has a beach volleyball scholarship to play for the University of Tampa, with their training. Their mother, Lorraine, said that before the court was built, it would take her daughters 45 minutes to get to practice, either on Siesta Key or at Sarasota’s Bee Ridge Park, and another 45 to get back (on days without traffic). It was worth the cost — more than $10,000 — to

give them that time back, Lorraine Pater said. Now, three days a week, private coaches come to the Pater residence to work with them and a handful of other area players. Ashley Pater said she will take one weekday off completely and is usually competing somewhere on the weekend. No matter what, she makes time to go on runs to help her cardio and does gym workouts to maintain her strength. The routine has worked. This summer, Pater has won three national championship events. On July 4, she teamed with Tallahassee’s Jordan Boulware to win the P1440 Girls Junior National in Tavares. The duo then won the Association of
Volleyball Professionals Junior Nationals in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on July 23. On July 31, Pater teamed with Cypress, California’s Zoey Henson to win the USA High Performance Junior Nationals in Fort Lauderdale. Since her freshman year, Pater has set up her schedule to graduate a year early in 2022. Instead of going to USC right away, Pater said she will be taking a gap year, moving out to California and training with the professional players, plus traveling to play in as many big events as she can. Pater said it’s the best way to follow her dream of not just becoming a pro but also qualifying for the Olympics. The more she can accumulate that level of experience, the better, she said.
This week, Pater is in Chicago to compete for a spot in the AVP Chicago Open. This will be her second time competing in a professional event; she’s just hoping to make the main draw, she said. Pater said that whether she does or not, the chance to go against the best in the world will help her improve her game. “I’m motivated to be the best in the world,” Pater said.

She wanted to make sure they all left with one. “These are such precious kids,” Medford said about hosting the event. “Our only job here today is to see them smile.” The Sunshine Kids organization presents a variety of programs and events free of charge for kids who are receiving cancer treatments. The Sirius Day Spa event provided the kids and their siblings with massages, nail treatments, makeup applications, hair styling and mini facials. Three-year-old Owen Hart of Cape Coral was smiling as he walked away from a mini massage. He ran over to his mom, Amy Burge, and gave her a hug. Burge had tears in her eyes. “He has leukemia,” she said of her son. “This is awesome. It’s just a little normalcy.” Lakewood Ranch 3-year-old Hadley Carter was being pampered by Sirius Day Spa’s Debra Ratzlaff, who was painting her nails. Ratzlaff went slowly, asking the little girl how she could make each of her fingernails look different and special. Hadley’s mom, Ryan, watched from a few feet away. “She has a soft muscle cancer,” Ryan Carter explained. “She is halfway through her treatment. the nails of Ruskin 5-year-old Callie Johnson, who couldn’t stop smiling about all the attention she was getting. “She just had a bone marrow transplant,” said her mom, Marguerite. “This is such a nice time for her not to think about what she is going through. This is great for morale. And this was a nice surprise for her. She had been asking all week if she could get her nails done.” Cape Coral 5-year-old Jeremiah Valera started his event by having a temporary tattoo put on his arm. His mom, Daniela Isaza, said his cancer affected his adrenal glands. “This is so wonderful,” she said. “He had COVID, so he finally gets to relax and do something. It’s wonderful to have an activity with other kids who are a lot like him. It makes him feel safe.” When the kids finished their treatments, they had food waiting for them in the lobby, supplied by Jenny and Mike Schenk of the Pineapple Kitchen of Bradenton. “We have grandchildren, so to see all these young kids hits home,” Jenny Schenk said.

Student can ‘bee’ with mom Mill Creek mother designs a pin for her daughter to wear to ease separation anxiety. LIZ RAMOS STAFF WRITER
W
henever Mill Creek’s Mia Morton, a first grader at Gene Witt Elementary School, misses her mother, all she has to do is look down to the bee pin to know her mom loves her. “I like (the pin) because it reminds me of Mommy and makes me think of Mommy,” Mia Morton said of her mother, Stephanie. Stephanie designed the bee pin with her 6-year-old daughter to help with separation anxiety. Mia wears the pin almost every day. Stephanie said dropping Mia and her 8-year-old son, Logan, off at school when they were in kindergarten was heart-wrench-
ing. She would see children sobbing and having difficulty letting go of their parents. “You love them so much you don’t want to leave them,” Stephanie said. Luckily, her children were so excited about school that they didn’t have too difficult of a time saying goodbye. When Stephanie dropped Mia off for the first day of school this year, only a few tears were shed, but she still has days when she misses her mom while she’s at school. “She can look down, and even though I’m not there to talk to her, hopefully she’ll know all the conversations we’ve had surrounding it,” Stephanie said. “When she says, ‘Mom, I don’t want to go today,’ and I can say, ‘Don’t worry, I’ll be with you.’ Knowing she might be playing that back in her head makes me feel better that she’s not upset or hopefully not for long.” Stephanie’s inspiration for the bee pin came from a golden heart pin she had in third grade to make
her think of her mother. The Mortons worked on the design of the bee pin together, making the project more special to them. Stephanie said they landed on using a bee as a design because Mia’s middle name is Bella, and sometimes Stephanie calls her “Bee” as a nickname. The bee’s wings are hearts to remind whoever is wearing it that they are loved. “It’s like a hug on your shirt,” Stephanie said. “When you know they’re OK, you feel better about it. Any time I think she might be sad, or the teacher notices she’s a little down, Mia can look down and find comfort.” Stephanie said the pin can be for children or adults. Stephanie keeps her pin on her desk rather than wearing it. The family also wears the pins while cheering for Logan at his baseball games. “It applies to everybody and anyone,” Stephanie said. “The sentiment can be repurposed for anybody in any way just like that idea that all people would find
