Longtime sergeant retires A

longtime sergeant with the Longboat Key Police Department is calling it a career.

Lee Smith began with LKPD in 2012 as an officer, earning promotion to sergeant in charge of overseeing road patrol officers within the department. At the June 1 Town Commission meeting, police officers packed the Town Hall chambers to show support as Smith was recognized for his years of service with the town.

“This is a great day and a sad day all wrapped up in one,” Police

Chief Russ Mager said. “As a chief, or any supervisor for that matter, it’s hard to watch somebody walk out the door that has a lot of knowledge, training and experience and brings a lot to the table with character and professionalism.”

Smith’s experience includes four years with the U.S. Marine Corps as a squad leader. He then shifted to police work before joining Dynacorp. He returned to a first responder role with Longboat Key. Smith thanked the town’s

manager, commission and the town as a whole, and said the department is in good hands as he steps away.

“You guys made a great choice in choosing the chief. I think he understands the mission of the Longboat Key town and police department,” Smith said. “I just wanted to thank everybody, all my co-workers who showed up today. Thank you.”

Mager said Smith’s position will be filled internally among officers who have taken the Sergeants Promotional Exam.

The League of Women Voters of Manatee County is hosting virtual candidate forums as voters prepare for primary elections on Aug. 18.

Candidates for Florida’s District 16 in the U.S. House of Representatives, Manatee County Commission and Manatee County School Board will participate in six upcoming forums.

Separate forums for Democratic and Republican candidates will be held for Florida’s 16th congressional district, which encompasses Manatee County and was recently reshaped to include DeSoto and Hardee counties and a portion of Pinellas. U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, who has served in Congress for 20 years, is retiring. n The Democratic candidate forum for District 16 will be held at 5 p.m. June 18. n The Republican candidate forum for District 16 will be at held 4 p.m.

Longboat Key Fire Rescue is working to refresh its fleet of fire trucks, spending big in the next two fiscal years to the tune of $3.8 million for two ladder trucks. Ladder 1 was

manufactured in 2013, and maintenance costs are adding up.

“The longer you push a truck out, the higher your maintenance costs will be,” Fire Chief Paul Dezzi said.

“We try not to do that. We determine through talking with service and looking at the history of our vehicles the life expectancy of these trucks.”

When an engine or ambulance breaks down, the vehicle is sent to Sarasota County’s maintenance facility. Last year, the town spent $54,874 on ambulance repairs and $56,414 on fire trucks. Dezzi said the department budgets $100,000 annually for apparatus repairs. One major benefit of contracting with the county for fleet maintenance is the ability for the county to loan vehicles to the town while repairs are being completed if the town doesn’t have a reserve vehicle at the time.

“You’ll sometimes see a Sarasota fire engine or a Sarasota ambulance down here, but it’s probably being run by us,” Dezzi said.

Dezzi said life expectancy is about 10 years for fire trucks and seven to eight for ambulances. With fire rescue vehicles, mechanical age isn’t determined by miles driven, but hours running. That’s because on the scene of many emergencies, fire equipment can sit idling for hours.

“For the pump to work, for the ladder to work, it’s gotta be running,” Dezzi said. “Everything works from the engine.”

Longboat Key Fire Rescue has a spreadsheet with all the vehicles in its fleet. The columns of the sheet are labeled mileage, year, condition, service, reliability and repair, with a score for each. The total gives the town a quick view at remaining service life.

With nearly 6,000 hours on the clock of a 13-year old ladder truck, Dezzi says it’s past time to replace it.

the two ladder trucks in its fleet, and its 13-year-old ladder truck has 5,838 hours on it.

The cost for a new ladder truck is more expensive than the town spent on the other ladders in its fleet combined. The town has budgeted $1.6 million to purchase a 107-foot ladder from Pierce Manufacturing, which has a facility in Bradenton and another in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Dezzi said he noticed prices begin to skyrocket during Covid. In January 2020, the town purchased a 75-foot ladder truck from Ohio-based manufacturer Sutphen for $850,000.

Although the newly ordered Pierce truck features a longer 107-foot ladder, Dezzi attributes the price hikes across the industry to supply bottlenecks and inflation.

A fire engine is outfitted with specialized equipment such as pumps, hoses, medical gear and other rescue equipment. None of those items has been spared from inflation. Dezzi said defibrillators cost $75,000 each now, for example.

“The cost of emergency services is

unbelievable,” Dezzi said. “I’ve been doing this over 40 years, and it’s just shocking how much it’s costing to operate a fire rescue department, and we’re not even talking about salaries. That’s another issue.”

Equipment can be transferred from the retired truck, but it wears just like trucks do.

LONGER WAITS

Right now, Fire Station 91’s main engine is a pumper truck.

Ladder trucks are inherently more expensive than pumpers and tankers, but Dezzi said the added cost is worth it.

“The way we operate is we operate with two ladder trucks. Can we operate with two pumpers instead at a cheaper cost? Yeah, but in my opinion it’s a service-level decrease,” Dezzi said. “The thing that people need to understand is that you know we have a certain level of service that the citizens expect, and we’re trying to provide that to them.”

ladder months ago, but delivery isn’t expected until October 2027 at the earliest.

“They told us when you order a ladder truck, expect it to be 36 months or more,” Dezzi said.

One of the cited reasons for rising costs — supply chain issues — is also the reason given by manufacturers for the longer turnaround times, Dezzi said. Covid also caused many local governments to pause spending where they could as the global economy ground to a halt.

“During Covid, a lot of the fire departments held off on buying any trucks,” Dezzi said. “Now all of a sudden in the last couple of years, everybody is buying these trucks, so it’s putting everybody on a wait list.”

With that in mind, the town is also planning ahead to replace its 2020 ladder, budgeting $2 million in fiscal year 2028, according to the town’s five-year capital improvement plan.

THREATENED REVENUE

Finding funds to refresh its fleet is easier said than done, especially as property tax changes could be on the way.

“Property taxes currently fund a significant portion of local public safety services. As a result, any future changes to the property tax structure could have implications for municipal revenues and the services those revenues support,” Dezzi said in an email. “The department is evaluating a range of potential scenarios and will continue to provide transparent information regarding emergency service delivery, staffing, equipment replacement, capital planning and disaster preparedness.”

The town uses infrastructure surtax funds to pay for new equipment typically, but the 15-year capital improvement plan on how to spend that expected revenue has a $6 million shortfall. The town is shifting funds in an effort to balance that shortfall, with the $1.8 million budgeted for the new ladder truck and its equipment instead coming from the town’s miscellaneous capital project fund, according to the town’s Capital Improvement Plan.

The $2 million for the next ladder truck and its equipment, slated for fiscal year 2028, will come from the Sarasota County Infrastructure Surtax fund.

“I always tell the firemen up there I know there’s a lot of wants out there.

I get it. I got a lot of wants I want here too. But it’s what we need, and what we have on our trucks and in the facilities is what we need,” Dezzi said. “Our trucks aren’t extravagant.

We don’t have bells on there. Our trucks are basic trucks, and they do the job that we have. We never put more than what we need on there.”

After exactly 20 years in the position, Town Clerk Trish Shinkle has retired.

T

here aren’t many people, if any, who have been to more Longboat Key Town Commission meetings than Trish Shinkle.

She started as Longboat Key Town Clerk in June 2006, taking meticulous records of every meeting since. Mayor Debra Williams described the Clerk’s Office as “the doorway to local government.” Shinkle and her office’s staff recorded votes of commission members, prepared and shared agendas, fulfilled public records requests and posted public notices.

As the cast of town commissioners has changed around her, Shinkle sat at the base of the dais doing the unglamorous paperwork necessary at each meeting.

“It’s one of those jobs you don’t talk about, but without her, things would have gotten screwed up quickly,” said Town Commissioner BJ Bishop.

The records she kept will allow future residents and historians a glimpse into decisions made by the town government in the 20 years that ended this month, but the knowledge that lives in her head from that firsthand record-keeping experience will be hard to replace.

“If we asked if something was on the ballot in 2014, she could just recall it off the top of her head,” Town Manager Howard Tipton said.

“She was very encyclopedic in that way. She was very well organized.

She could always put her hands on whatever information we requested, and could do it usually in seconds it seemed like.”

She had a front row seat to some

of the most consequential decisions the Town Commission has made.

Recently, the discussion around changing the name of the town’s main road was a contentious issue with vast feedback from the public.

Shinkle and her team cataloged and organized the hundreds of emails that poured in on the subject.

But neither the potential renaming of Gulf of Mexico Drive nor the approval of the St. Regis nor sign code amendments were the most contentious topics that came before the commission in her time, as Shinkle remembers. That honor belongs to the proposed expansion of the Longboat Key Club in 2010. There was so much public interest that meetings had to be moved down the road to the Temple Beth Israel synagogue to accommodate the influx of people.

“That was a big production because you had to take all the recording equipment and the cameras and all the commission goodies that we have to do,” Shinkle said as she sat in her office for the last time Tuesday afternoon. “It was basically moving this office down there is what it was.”

Shinkle, a Bradenton native, worked for 13 years as a clerk with Sarasota County before coming to Longboat Key. She said doing so was a great decision.

“I really didn’t know a lot about Longboat Key,” Shinkle said. “The people are so involved and interested in their community. At the county level, it’s so big that they don’t get involved with their commissioners and their staff members.

But here, everybody is very friendly, very appreciative of the work that the staff does, and you’re on a firstname basis with a lot of the citizens.”

The biggest misconception people have about Longboat Key is about the people, Shinkle said.

“Everybody thinks that you have to have a certain amount of wealth to be welcome on Longboat Key, but that’s not the case at all,” she said.

“The people, the citizens, the commissioners, they are all so very down to earth. They enjoy their community and they’re proud of their community.”

As Shinkle steps away for retirement, she says the town is in good hands.

“This commission that we have now, and that’s inclusive of the former Mayor Ken Schneier, they’re the most cohesive that I’ve worked with in the last 20 years,” Shinkle said. “When I came, they battled amongst themselves, and it slowly got to a point where those interested in serving the public came forward and took over and actually served the public. The administrative team that (Tipton) has put together is also the best that I’ve worked with in the last 20 years.”

After Shinkle’s last day June 2, she continued to pack her bags for a trip to Alaska.

Celine Kidwell has been hired as the next town clerk, with a tentative start date of July 20.

PRANK CALLS Early each April, Town Hall phones rang off the hook for made-up controversies. The Longboat Observer’s April Fools’ edition fooled plenty, Shinkle said.

“It was fun to talk to the people, especially when we convinced them that it was a joke and to start the real paper on page 4,” Shinkle said. “That’s what I tell all new employees, too. Don’t forget that the first edition in April is your April Fools.”

One call she took that had a resident particularly mad was the story about expanding Gulf of Mexico Drive to six lanes.

“This lady was so mad that they were going to tear down all the landscaping throughout the town to put in six lanes for traffic,” Shinkle said.

“She was so upset.”

T

he Longboat Key Town Commission has taken the first step toward introducing a tax and fees to pay for canal dredging, and some property owners are pushing back on the funding method.

On Thursday, Dan Dexter delivered a letter to Longboat Key Town Hall to appeal the assessment on his and his neighbors’ properties.

“For the record, I am formally appealing any assessment related to the above subject,” Dexter wrote in the letter. “A mobile home on Longboat Key is an oddity, and does not benefit from canal dredging costs as other properties on the island.”

Dexter, who has lived in the Gulf Shore mobile home community since 2020, said property taxes without the canal assessment included are already a strain on those in the 55+ community.

“The condo fees are very, very low and the value of the units are low because they’re so small that it’s affordable living for people,” Dexter said. “The trailer parks are an anomaly.”

For Dexter’s home, the town’s waterway assessment website shows there would be a $124 annual fee to pay for canal dredging.

“I can pay the $124,” he said. “It’s just the principle of the thing.”

Even though the mobile home community has water access, with boat slips fronting Buttonwood Harbor to the rear of the community, property owners are not required to pay the full $620 flat fee that a canalfacing single-family home would be assessed. Public Works Director Charlie Mopps said multifamily

communities like Gulf Shore have the fee calculated by the number of homes to boat dock ratio. Because there are several units per boat dock, the fee is discounted.

Dexter’s appeal letter is merely a request to the town. He said he doesn’t plan to take the issue to court, but he hopes the town considers making an exception for those in the Gulf Shore and Twin Shores communities.

“I know what their logic is, that everybody on Longboat benefits from the canals. I can hop in my kayak and paddle down to a canal,” Dexter said. “But because it’s a mobile home park with smaller units, make an exception and make it 5% of EBU instead of 20 or something. They should make some accommodation.”

Taxable values at the Gulf Shore and Twin Shores communities on Longboat Key are an anomaly for Longboat Key, with properties assessed from $100,000 to $300,000.

he owner of the Half Moon House has been given an extended deadline by the town for repairs to be completed on the small, stilted house.

The building that was declared unsafe by the town’s building official in June 2025 has had its water, sewer and electrical service cut until repairs to the building are made. This February, the town’s building official began the process of pursuing a demolition order as repair work had yet to begin. But in April, the town and homeowner entered into a compliance agreement, which outlined repairs to the house at 6541 Gulfside Road be done by June 1, the start of hurricane season.

After that agreement was recently altered, a new deadline of Aug. 1 for repairs has been set.

“The Half Moon House (owner) has requested an extension, which is going to be given to them because they are consolidating the work they anticipate doing,” Town Attorney Maggie Mooney said. “These are hard deadlines because we are in

The 4,400-square-foot house on 0.4 acres was sold in December for $3.6 million to an LLC with attorney Ivo Jan Travnicek listed as the registered agent.

SUNDAY, MAY 31

TIME TO CHANGE THE LOCKS 7:19 a.m., 5300 block Gulf of Mexico Drive Civil disturbance: Police responded to a reported trespassing at a small business in a commercial plaza.

Upon arrival, the officer met with the business owner, who said she was approached by a man who had previously been arrested for trespassing at the location, according to the police report. The business owner said she was preparing to leave town when the man approached her and began arguing with her. She said the man was homeless and becomes verbally abusive when he is drinking.

She added that the man had been given keys and biometric access to the business and that she recently bonded him out of jail. She told police nobody should be in the business for the next few days and that she would change the locks upon her return. The responding officer wrote in the report that “based on continued actions between the two, I do not believe this course of action will be followed through.” Police searched the area for the suspect, as well as where he reportedly “beds down” near Publix, but had no luck.

The officer wrote that increased patrols would be done in the area, and closed the case.

THE MAN IN BLACK 11:52 a.m., 5581 Gulf of Mexico Drive Suspicious person: An outgoing man clad in black who arrived on motorcycle told hotel guests his plans to spend the night with another guest, which prompted a call to police. The woman who spoke to police said the man was wearing a black jacket, black sunglasses, black shorts and was driving a black Harley-Davidson-style motorcycle.

The man told one guest about “having a sexual issue” and was straightforward about his desires with the woman, who confirmed the account to police. Neither woman felt threatened by the man, but assumed he was in need of medication. During his visit to the hotel, the man swam in the pool, did tricks on his motorcycle and talked about the medical marijuana he had left on the beach.

By the time police arrived, the man had left, and a search on the town’s

hurricane season.”

Planning and Zoning Director Allen Parsons said temporary cribbing, jacks and steel beams must be put in place by July 1. Then, the pilings must be replaced and all permanent repair work must be completed

by Aug. 1.

“This is the only extension that will be granted because it is now officially in hurricane season and the structural conditions must be rectified before the peak of hurricane season,” Parsons wrote in an email.

“The seawall is a separate project and a seawall permit has not been filed with the town.”

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 3

YOU NEVER ORDERED FOOD, SIR 3:20 p.m., 1601 Gulf of Mexico Drive Disturbance: A guest acting strangely in his room prompted a call to police on a recent Wednesday afternoon. When police arrived, head of resort security told the officers a welfare check that morning resulted in a dispute between the guest and hotel staff. The man reportedly became so upset that he removed his shirt and “became verbal with staff,” who thought the man had been drinking. The man said he was waiting for his meal and that he did not want to be bothered by staff if they were not bringing his food. No food order had been taken, according to the hotel. Police entered the room accompanied by hotel staff and warned the man that any further incidents could result in legal actions. Hotel staff agreed to keep an eye on the guest, and police closed the case.

TUESDAY, JUNE 2

NOT A PUBLIC SHOWER 8:42 p.m., Channel Lane Suspicious person: A man called police on a suspicious person after a strange request from a stranger. A resident said he was approached by a woman who appeared to be intoxicated and asked to use the outdoor shower on his property. The man told her no and told her to leave the property. The woman then walked north on Gulf of Mexico Drive. Police conducted a search for the woman to no avail, and closed the case.

Property tax overhaul: What you should know

hile the reports of property taxes’ demise in Florida were greatly exaggerated this month in headlines and instant-news stories, the deeper details of what the state Legislature approved in special session June 2 are far more nuanced than a click-grabbing headline.

First off, it’s not a done deal.

To be enacted, the proposed taxsystem overhaul put forth two weeks ago requires 60% approval in the November election. Initially, that bar doesn’t appear insurmountable, based on polling data.

A query by Stetson University shows 77% of respondents would “definitely” or “probably” vote yes.

A similar poll by the James Madison Institute found 77% in favor, and 54% said they pay more in property taxes now than they did five years ago.

Here’s a deeper dive into what you’re going to see on the ballot this fall.

DIFFERING VIEWS

STATE SEN. BRYAN AVILA: “Our

nation was forged by pioneer patriots who left everything behind and risked their lives for the dream of living in freedom on their own piece of property.

We agree with Gov. DeSantis that having to continually pay the government for the right to live on your own property flies in the face of that dream.”

“Unfortunately, this property tax reform measure does not represent cost savings, but rather a cost shift — one that will force local lawmakers to cut local services that families rely upon or increase other taxes and fees to make up for the missing revenue. In either case, everyday Floridians ultimately pay the price for the massive loss in property tax revenue.”

HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION

Within the first year of ownership, Florida residents may apply for a homestead exemption on their primary residences by March 1 of each year if they lived in the home on Jan. 1 of the same year. Once in force, the first $25,000 of this exemption applies to all taxing authorities. The second $25,000 excludes School Board taxes. And since Jan. 1, 2025, the annual exemptions are indexed for inflation, amounting to $51,411 for the 2026 tax year.

SAVE OUR HOMES

Florida’s Save of Homes provisions are designed to insulate taxpayers from sharp rises in assessed values, allowing for no more than a 3% yearto-year increase for homesteaded properties. But, if that owner sells, the baseline taxable value resets to current levels for the new owner and then is subject to the 3% ceiling once again.

Nonhomesteaded properties, such as second homes owned by residents of other states, can gain a maximum 10% annually in assessed value and routinely do during times of increasing property values. In Manatee County, about 47% of residential and real property is homesteaded. In Sarasota County, it’s about 45%.

IF IT PASSES The constitutional amendment would build toward a so-called super homestead exemption, totaling $250,000 for bona fide residents of the state before Dec. 31, 2026 — though still not applying to school districts. There, only the original $25,000 exemption still applies. n Beginning on Jan. 1, 2027, homesteaded owners would be entitled to a $150,000 exemption from taxable assessed value, three times the current value. n That exemption increases to $250,000 on Jan. 1, 2028 and would adjust annually to the Consumer Price Index. n People who move to Florida after Jan. 1, 2027 would have a $50,000 exemption for their first five years before qualifying for the super exemption. n Nonhomesteaded properties would see a 5% cap on assessed taxable values.

Local governments would be

restricted to funding only specific segments of spending with money derived from property taxes. They are: n Public safety, including law enforcement, fire service, and emergency medical service n Education and public schools (additional funds beyond operational expenses covered by school board taxes) n Road and bridge construction and maintenance, stormwater control, and other infrastructure projects n Natural resource projects, including flood control measures n Retirement benefits of local government employees n Bond obligations n Operations and administration of county officers and commissioners and municipalities Once a part of the plan, a state trust fund to help small, rural counties offset the losses of property tax revenue was removed before the final vote by the Legislature.

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS HIGHER PROPERTY TAX RATES?

Florida municipalities are restricted by law in raising tax rates above 10 mills ($10 per assessed $1,000 of assessed value), not to mention public sentiment on election day. Manatee County currently totals 7.856 mills in aggregate. Sarasota County levies an aggregate millage of 5.3787.

Like with most issues involving taxes, no two situations are identical.

Here are four property scenarios and what effect tax changes might have. In all cases, the data uses the aggregate ad valorem millage (5.3787) for an unincorporated Sarasota County property, keeping assessed values steady.

HIGHER SALES TAXES?

A study undertaken by the Tax Foundation found that complete property tax elimination would require an average combined state-local sales tax rate of 15.34% to break even, more than double what residents pay in Manatee and Sarasota counties.

And that would require unlikely state approval and voter approval locally.

TOTAL ELIMINATION?

Though more work remains and nothing yet has been proposed, part of the amendment makes it possible for counties, municipalities and school districts to provide additional forms of tax relief, up to full elimination of taxes by voter approval.

DECISIONS, DECISIONS

HOW THE REFORM WOULD CHANGE TAX BILLS

In some cases, part-time residents of Florida could shift residency to the Sunshine State to qualify for the exemption. In those cases, a Declaration of Domicile would have to be filed with the county clerk, proving rescinded residency elsewhere.

RENTERS As the resident of a leased space, your property tax is included in your rent, so this measure doesn’t directly benefit you. But your landlord does pay property tax, and in all likelihood, the owner of your apartment, house or condo isn’t entitled to a homestead exemption. So, the benefit you gain from all of this is indirect: Your landlord’s property now can’t increase in taxable assessed value more than 5% a year vs. 10% previously. Will you get a break on rent? That’s not something that can be addressed within the amendment.

NONHOMESTEADED PROPERTY You live in New Jersey, but you like to visit your homeaway-fromhome at the beach a few months of the year — but not enough to call Florida home or claim a homestead exemption. Your condo has a market value of $2.6 million. It was assessed in 2025 at $1.026 million, rising from $933,570 the year before, nearly hitting the 10% cap. In 2023, you did hit the 10% cap, and the same happened in 2022. Had the 5% cap been in place since 2022, the 2025 assessment would be $937,642 — $88,358 less. Your tax savings would be about $478 ($5,496 vs. $5,018).

Working to protect the turtles has become a project for the whole family, and while the pair was leading a Turtle Walk on Longboat Key, Brenda’s other son, Caleb, was working farther south to relocate nests ahead of planned beach renourishment work.

COMPARING 2026 AND 2025

Though it is still early in the nesting season, which runs May 1 through Oct. 31, early data gathered by Mote Marine show the 2026 season is almost on pace with last year’s record-breaking numbers for nests on Longboat Key. For the May 31-June 6 weekly summary on nesting activity, researchers documented 149 loggerhead nests and 176 false crawls.

That compares to 156 loggerhead nests for the same time period in 2025 on Longboat, with 260 false crawls. It was a sizable rise from 2024, when 105 nests were documented with 257 false crawls.

s the sun rose above the treetops of Longboat Key on June 6, a trail of flipper prints in the sand right in front of the beach access at 4795 Gulf of Mexico Drive was thrown into sharp relief, the shadows revealing the path of a mother sea turtle that had laid her eggs the night before.

A group of nearly 50 residents and educators was there to document and stake out the nest for the first official Turtle Walk of the season.

Every nesting season, experts trained with Mote Marine Laboratory lead these free public walks on Saturdays in June and July to help educate curious visitors.

Participants that morning included a mix of people joining for the first time and nature lovers who were excited to see the first demonstration of 2026.

Following an introductory talk about turtle tracking technology and ways residents can help facilitate a successful season for sea turtles, the group made its way to the nearby nest. The team of Brenda and Ben Jameson, Connie Schindewolf and Enrico “Sam” DiGiammarino Jr. showed how they stake the nest so passers-by know not to disturb it.

Schindewolf explained each step of marking the nest and documenting its location in case the stakes get displaced. She also examined the turtle tracks, describing where the turtle must have paused on her journey, how the “angel wing” marks at the apex show where her front flippers dug into the sand, and where much smaller tracks indicated a crab may have dug into the nest and snagged a meal.

She said she was pleased to see such a high turnout of interested community members for the first walk of the season. Under Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Marine Turtle Permit 27, educators will lead these walks every week. Registration is not required.

For those who couldn’t attend, Schindewolf offers a reminder to use turtle-safe lighting, make sure any beach furniture is cleared from the area before the end of the day, and to fill in any holes in the sand that may trap hatchlings or even adult turtles.

“So far this year, I think we have seen fewer holes on the beach,” she said. “We don’t always have the time to stop and fill in every one, so we appreciate the help. I’m hoping the word gets out about it.”

The group gathers at 6:45 a.m.

arasota is a friendly place, but sometimes, a little snobbery creeps in when it comes to our neighbor 18 miles south. Venice is smaller and doesn’t have all of Sarasota’s worldclass cultural institutions.

There is one area, however, where Venice towers over Sarasota — community theater. That’s particularly true when the Venice Theatre hosts the American Association of American Community Theatre’s WorldFest, which it has since 2010, pandemics and hurricanes notwithstanding.

WorldFest runs June 15-20 and includes 11 plays from around the globe as well as parties and workshops.

Asked why Venice Theatre hosts

WorldFest, Venice Theatre Executive Director Kristofer Geddie says, “No one else has the capacity to handle it.”

Of approximately 6,000 community theaters in the U.S., Venice Theatre is recognized as the second largest, as measured by its operating budget. (Omaha Community Playhouse claims first place.) Not to be confused with regional theaters that pay actors, community theaters fill their stages with volunteers who perform for applause and recognition, but not money.

Founded in 1950, Venice Theatre has more than 1,300 volunteers. Not bad for a city of about 30,000.

The last time Venice Theatre rolled out the red carpet for WorldFest was in June 2022. A few months later, Hurricane Ian destroyed Venice Theatre’s mainstage Jervey Theatre and its fly tower. Those who don’t visit Venice often may be surprised to see the tower intact again.

The inside of the 432-seat Jervey Theatre won’t open until 2027, but the outside is a thrilling site, especially if you saw it after Ian ripped through town in September 2022.

After the Jervey was knocked out of commission, the Venice Theatre continued to perform in its black box Pinkerton Theatre, which seats 90, and transformed its education building, the Raymond Center, into a temporary theater with a capacity of 130, while it raised money for construction.

The cost of restoring the Jervey and bringing its systems up to code turned out to be $25 million, which was raised through government grants and private donations, with a few bumps in the road. In May, the Sarasota County Commission allocated the Venice Theatre $2 million to renovate the Raymond Center and return it to its original role as an education center.

Even though the Jervey Theatre isn’t open yet, WorldFest represents a “soft opening” of sorts. The staff and volunteers at Venice Theatre are ready to celebrate not just that global theater festival, but the end of the dark days when funding for the restoration hung in the balance.

Rebuilding after the storm was a lot harder than everyone expected.

But in the wake of the storm, Geddie and WorldFest coordinator Alyssa Goudy have become ace problem solvers. When they were curating this year’s WorldFest, they were mindful of the difficulties that some foreign performers have recently experienced in obtaining visas. “Some of our troupes are representing foreign cultures and speak languages besides English, but they are already in the U.S.,” Goudy says.

English) theater troupe in the midSouth, Cazateatro was founded in 2010 with a mission of celebrating Latino culture and uniting diverse cultures. Its entry in WorldFest is “I Was There: Memories of Those Who Had No Choice.”

One of the hottest WorldFest tickets is for Britain’s Scrambled Egg Theatre Co., which is presenting “Exposure,” a show that is reminiscent of Alfred’s Hitchcock’s classic films of the 1950s and 1960s.

Don’t assume a theater troupe speaks English because it hails from the land where the language originated. Scrambled Egg is known to perform in what Goudy calls “gibberish.”

What if you can’t understand the language being spoken in a play?

After all, the troupes at WorldFest represent countries such as Ghana, Israel, Italy, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Switzerland and Ukraine.

Not to worry, says Geddie. “The language of theater is universal. A lot is communicated through action and emotion,” he says. “When I watch a video of a play being submitted for WorldFest, I turn the sound off.”

A military brat who tried his luck as an actor in New York after earning a bachelor’s degree in musical theater, Geddie performed on Norwegian Cruise Lines for nearly a decade.

That experience helped him hone his improv skills, on stage and off.

Geddie first came to Venice Theatre to play Coalhouse Walker in “Ragtime” in 2010 and was hired the following year as the theater’s first director of diversity.

In 2023, Venice Theatre’s board promoted Geddie to executive director. He succeeded Murray Chase, who had held that position since 1995.

Before getting the top job, Geddie served as the community theater’s general manager for six years, during which time he earned a master’s in arts administration from Goucher College in Maryland.

Chase planned to retire, but agreed to stay to oversee the restoration of the Jervey Theatre. He is currently interim artistic director, following the exit of Benny Sato Ambush

in May 2025. Ambush joined Venice Theatre as artistic director on a temporary basis in January 2021 and ended up staying four years instead of one.

It was WorldFest that originally brought Ambush to town. He came as an adjudicator for the festival in 2010 and again in 2014. He liked what he saw enough to return full time seven years later.

That’s the thing about WorldFest: You never know who’s going to show up and make Venice their next home.

BREATHING THE SAME AIR

The excitement in the air in the days leading up to WorldFest is reason enough to make the trip from Sarasota for the festival, which promises to be a veritable United Nations of theater. At the end of the festival, one troupe will walk away with the coveted Audience Choice Award.

One of this year’s entries, “Common Air” features actors from two countries currently at war. Olga was born in Moscow and Iryna was born in Ukraine, but they both currently live in the U.S. Through movement and improvisational music, the two women come to an understanding.

A play from Israel follows an AI character who joins a women’s support office and upends routines and relationships. Presented by the Yoram Loewenstein Acting School, the dark comedy is called “Haviva, You’re Fired.”

The provocative show “Playing God” comes from Slovakia’s dNO Co. Inspired by a real-life mass murder at a church in that country, it puts judges and juries under the microscope.

Before the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, theater was often used as a form of political dissent, assisted by disguised stories that would escape the notice of censors.

With authoritarian regimes cracking down on their opponents in various countries around the world, is theater once again becoming a fulcrum for political dissent?

“Theater is always political,” Geddie says. “That’s the nature of the beast.”

High began his career with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the MIT Museum in Massachusetts. Following graduate work at Williams College, he held leadership and academic roles at institutions such as the Portland (Maine) School of Art and Virginia Commonwealth University. He also led the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno and Telfair Museums in Savannah, Georgia.

During High’s tenure, The Ringling more than doubled its collections, expanded its programming and educational offerings, installed major additions and undertook significant restorations. Some repairs weren’t planned for, such as damage to the grounds and the Ca’ d’Zan when Hurricane Milton made landfall in October 2024.

High’s stewardship saw the opening of the Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Center for Asian Art, the Kotler-Coville Glass Pavilion and the Turrell Skyspace Joseph’s Coat installation.

He also expanded educational outreach, accessibility initiatives and multidisciplinary programming, including the Art of Performance series, whose events take place in the jewelbox Historic Asolo Theater, or The HAT, for short.

The courtyard in the middle of the U-shaped John and Mable Ringling Art Museum is filled with statues, the most prominent of which is a 16-foot bronze replica of Michelangelo’s David. The Ringling Courtyard hosts public music and dance parties under David’s watchful eye.

FSU and the Ringling Museum of Art Foundation have hired Isaacson, Miller, a national search firm, to help identify High’s successor. The search committee will be led by Meg Hausberg, chair of the Foundation Board, and Michael Bush, incoming chair.

High’s retirement marks the latest in a series of management changes at Sarasota’s premier cultural and educational organizations. Larry Thompson retired on May 31 after 26 years at Ringling College of Art and Design, another outgrowth of John and Mable Ringling’s plans to transform a sleepy fishing village into a major cultural destination.

That was also the last day of work for Maestro Victor DeRenzi, who served as artistic director and conductor of the Sarasota Opera for 44 years.

High joined The Ringling in 2011.

The cultural institution that grew out of John and Mable Ringling’s gift to the people of Florida in 1936 has been administered by FSU for 25 years.

The Ringling is a sprawling 66-acre campus composed of an art museum filled with European baroque masterpieces and a substantial Cypriot art collection, a circus museum and the affiliated Tibbals Learning Center, the Ca’ d’Zan (House of John) Venetian-style mansion and the Historic Asolo Theater, a jewelbox theater rescued from a palace in Italy.

One of the leading tourist destinations in the state of Florida, The Ringling hosts more than 400,000 visitors annually. That might not seem like much compared to Disney World’s 50 million visitors each year, but The Ringling is a major tourist draw in Sarasota along with beaches and the performing arts, including opera, ballet, orchestra and theater.

In a statement, High called serving as executive director of The Ringling the “highlight of his career” and credited the museum’s growth to the work of its staff, foundation board, university leadership and community supporters.

“Together, we strengthened The Ringling’s financial foundation, expanded its reach and preserved its remarkable collections and historic campus for future generations,” High said in a statement. “I am deeply grateful to Florida State University, our supporters and the Sarasota community for their partnership and trust.”

Under High’s leadership, The Ringling’s annual operating budget grew from $12 million to $28 million, and its endowment increased from $27 million to $67 million. The museum completed a $100 million capital campaign in 2019 and expanded its campus through a series of major projects and initiatives.

“Steven High strengthened The Ringling’s role as both a world-class museum and an important part of Florida State University’s academic mission,” said FSU Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Jim Clark in a statement.

Clark added: “He expanded opportunities for student learning, research and community engagement while helping preserve and enhance one of Florida’s great cultural institutions. FSU has invested in The Ringling’s growth and success, and Steven’s leadership helped

he opening weekend of the Sarasota Music Festival’s 62nd season provided convincing evidence that the core spirit and artistic excellence of one of America’s premier chamber music training festivals remain intact.

Though this year’s festival has fewer concerts, fellows and faculty artists, the caliber of the young musicians remains exceptionally high. The most significant change is that public concerts now primarily showcase fellows performing alongside a single faculty mentor, rather than featuring faculty-dominated ensembles.

While moments of less-thanperfect ensemble cohesion surfaced, the vast majority of the June 5-6 performances in Holley Hall rivaled some of the finest of previous seasons.

On Friday, in Beethoven’s Septet in E-flat Major, Op. 20, violinist Salvador Riera stood out for her remarkable shimmering tone.

Faculty violinist David Bowlin led Mendelssohn’s blockbuster Octet in E-flat Major, Op. 20. The musicians expressed the virtuosity, exuberance and overabundance of joy in the score.

A memorable Saturday finale with Robert Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E-flat Major, Op. 44 displayed an astounding level of confidence and artistry. Four students — Gabriela Salvador Riera and Minkyung Kang (violins), Elizabeth Chernyak (viola) and Amy Minchae Jo (cello) — matched the trademark virtuosity and collaborative sensitivity of pianist and faculty artist Michael Stephen Brown.

Louis Spohr’s Nonet in F Major, Op. 31 and Mozart’s Serenade No. 11 in E-flat Major, K. 375. The performances were excellent, displaying fine collaboration, balance and artistry.

Three works by American women composers deserve special mention — not as exercises in diversity programming, but because each makes a compelling case for a permanent place in the standard repertoire.

Short but nonetheless lovely was Florence Price’s reverent “Adoration,” featuring clarinetist Kevin Jin as the lone wind voice alongside a string quartet.

Composer Ruth Crawford Seeger’s Suite for Wind Quintet deserves wider recognition for her fresh take on 20th-century modernism. The five musicians, each with a strong solo voice, blended effectively while navigating unorthodox turns and twists.

Violins Gabriel Roth and Sydney Scarlett, faculty violist Teng Li, cellist Joie Kuo and pianist Qinghong Lian delivered Amy Beach’s Piano Quintet in F-sharp Minor, Op. 67 as the masterpiece it is. The collaborative spirit was strong, as was the ensemble’s cohesion. Similar to the Schumann Quintet, the score offers a starring role to the piano. Lian played with sensitivity, fluency and beguiling flair. If opening weekend is any indication, the Sarasota Music Festival’s future remains in very capable hands.

C

aleb Rodriguez grew accustomed to traveling and seeing the country growing up, when his father, Ben, led the family to different locations while serving in the U.S. Navy. Each city brought something new, but one thing Caleb always looked forward to was a trip to whichever theme park was nearby.

“One of the main consistencies was going to theme parks, because in the military, the bases have discounts for on-duty and off-duty members,” he said. “I just developed this pure love for understanding how the ride would move effortlessly through the tracks. I would be analyzing every detail of the dark rides.”

Now, the graduate of The Outof-Door Academy is finding a way to blend his love of parks and passion for STEM to pursue a career in mechanical engineering, specifically working with roller coasters.

The Rodriguez family recently celebrated Caleb’s graduation, which took place May 22 at Grace Community Church. Later this year, he plans to attend the University of Central Florida in Orlando to pursue

his dream career.

“What you want as a parent is to help them grow in whatever they want to do in life,” Ben Rodriguez said. “I always say my job is to give them a good education and foster that, then watch them fly.”

Caleb has called the Sands Point area of Longboat Key home for the past four years while attending ODA. He said he appreciated how the school provided him the opportunity to explore a variety of interests, from mathematics to musicals. He put those musical talents to use at the graduation ceremony, singing “Seasons of Love” with his classmates one last time.

Saying farewell to classmates and supportive teachers is always a challenge.

“The best part of the school has to be the faculty,” he said. “Every single teacher I’ve had at ODA has offered some kind of assistance. They obviously teach you, but I’ve always been able to go in for extra help whenever I needed it, and everyone was super supportive.”

Outside the classroom, Caleb said one accomplishment he is proud to remember is when the school’s Theatre Thespian Troupe went to the Florida Thespian Festival to perform its one-act show, and the team almost qualified to compete at the national level in only its third year of existence. He also participated in the first year of the school’s new e-sports program.

ROAD TO UCF

One significant appeal of attending UCF is its Society of Themed Entertainment Engineers and Leaders, which brings together students with his same interests in engineering and entertainment.

Moving to different states while growing up came with its challenges, Caleb said. However, it also taught him how to make new friends.

“I definitely learned the skills I needed to meet new people through that,” he said.

Caleb was born in Pensacola to Maritere Rochet and Ben as the middle child of three sons. The eldest, Daniel, is starting medical school soon, and the youngest, Noah, is a rising junior at ODA with an interest in business.

Their father said that, considering he used to visit Longboat Key as a child with his family, it meant a lot to bring his own children to the island they now call home.

Ben said he appreciates that ODA has fostered Caleb’s imagination and dynamic way of thinking.

“If he can do something that he loves and have a good time doing it, that’s a win for everybody,” he said.

Asked what his favorite theme park currently is, Caleb said Universal Epic Universe tops the list. However, there are plenty more he would like to visit in the near future, including Phantasialand in Germany.

Caleb said he looks forward to spreading his wings yet is glad home is still only a few hours away.

Plymouth Harbor residents recognized just how special that is with a combined birthday party for the three gentlemen turning 99 years old this summer.

Plymouth Harbor staff dished out slices from three separate birthday cakes to partygoers on June 1 in the packed Mayflower Dining Room.

After lighting the candles and kicking off the celebration, they each took to a table to chat with visiting family members and well-wishers. They readily offered life advice to those who asked.

Moffat worked for six years at Sarasota Memorial Hospital as an emergency room physician. He also served on multiple SMH committees and previously worked for a decade as a primary care physician at Beneva Family Practice and as a surgeon with SMH’s Community Clinic.

Beyond those duties, he also collaborated with the Tidewell Foundation.

Moffat was inspired to pursue a career in the medical field by his physician father. Joining him at the birthday party was his son, Tom, who had also followed in his footsteps leading to a medical career.

Also at the table sat his wife, Molly, with whom he will celebrate 75 years of marriage on June 19.

He has no shortage of conversationsparking stories, the very first of which begins on his day of birth. He was born right around midnight, and while the scale for deciding his birthday could have tipped either way, his father made sure it was listed as July 1 for a specific reason — it coincides with Canada Day. Moffat said he believed the appeal of free cake played a role in the high attendance at the joint birthday party. But speaking seriously, he said the camaraderie among Plymouth Harbor residents is genuinely impressive.

When it comes to birthday-inspired advice he would offer to others, he offered the straightforward words, “Keep doing it.”

Nimick turns 99 years old on July 25.

Among his variety of interests is a lifelong love of baseball, particularly when the Pittsburgh Pirates hit the diamond.

For years, Nimick has thrown out the first pitch for the Pirates during spring training.

Asked what advice he would share with others, he turned to his stylish jacket.

“I’m getting too old to stand up, so I try to stand out,” he said with a grin.

The coat itself holds some history unique to St. Armands in its seams.

Nimick’s father-in-law purchased it at Taffy’s Menswear, which was a staple retailer on the island for more than 50 years.

Nimick moved to Plymouth Harbor in 2015, and he said the community’s biggest strength is its people.

Closing out the birthdays will be Griffith on Aug. 16. He shares a medical background with Moffat, having worked as a physician with the Sarasota County Health Department.

Even in retirement, Griffith endeavored to promote community members’ wellbeing as a deeply involved volunteer with the Senior Friendship Centers.

Griffith said he has been glad to call his birthday buds good friends for several years.

Asked what he appreciates about Plymouth Harbor, he pointed around the room and said, “Look how many people came down here.”

His advice is to “stay social, keep an open mind, and try to think of good things to do for other people.”

Metal sculptor John Grammer has honed his crafting skills through various stages of his careers in construction and prop work for film.

Now, he said he appreciates getting to fine tune the work he presents at shows like last weekend’s St. Armands Circle Craft Festival.

t one corner of the St. Armands Circle Craft Festival over the weekend, a school of tropical fish, manatees, whales and even mermaids looked

ready to swim off its display stand. The steel wall hangings glittered in the afternoon sunshine just as brightly as any real fish scales, and artist John Grammer said 30 years of honing his craft has enabled him to share some of his best pieces yet.

Grammer was one of the artisans displaying their works at the Circle on June 6 and 7. He is based on the southern edge of Sarasota, and he had been looking forward to bringing new designs and refined techniques to the St. Armands fair.

The artist started his own brand, John Grammer Art, in early 2016. But his experience in metalwork began long before the brand.

In 1990, he launched a construction company, where he familiarized himself with the tools of the trade.

Those skills lent themselves to working on movie props.

“I’ve been an artist all my life, but I started making a living at it in L.A. about 30 years ago,” he said. “I started with making movies in my hometown in the U.S. Virgin Islands.”

The foray into movie-making helped him forge connections in the industry that led to working with studios, including Disney.

He said one of the largest films he did prop work for was “Stargate.”He fashioned several elements, including miniature rings featured prominently on screen. He and five other crew members managed to make the entire set in just 24 hours.

“I made a good living at it, but the lifestyle wasn’t for me, so I went back to the islands before moving here,” he said.

About 10 years ago, Grammer dove deeper into the world of art while learning from fellow metalworkers.

He started by working with fairly malleable copper sheets but later switched to his preferred medium, marine-grade stainless steel.

He said working with steel means it takes more time to fashion his marine creatures by hand. However, the steel is more resistant to degrad-

ing in outdoor elements, and the more neutral tones make the colors in his works pop. Shaping a single piece can take hours or even days for some of the larger pieces, like the life-sized alligator.

The pieces aren’t coated in any sort of paint. Rather, Grammer uses a precisely calibrated torch to add the stripes of a lionfish or the scutes of a sea turtle shell to his art.

“It took me about five years to learn how to control it,” he said, describing the technique as similar to airbrushing, but with flames.

His subjects center on ocean animals, which he attributes to inspiration from living on St. Thomas and St. John.

“I did also explore birds, but the sea life is what really started selling,” he said. “I think it just looks better with the slick, wet look, especially with all the blues. Fish just pop.”

While he has some favorite designs he has continued to fine tune, Grammer is also introducing new pieces, like the blue-tailed mermaid he had on show that weekend.

ing to pursue his sculpting full-time after retiring from the construction business 10 years ago, and he loves seeing viewers’ reactions to the large-scale pieces.

One of the best compliments he appreciates hearing from visitors is how pieces like the jellyfish capture the organic movement of the animal in what could otherwise be a stiff medium.

“With the whale in particular, one lady said the shape was ‘lyrical’ to her, and I thought that was a nice description,” he said.
