“Slightly different, albinism has no pigment in any areas, hence red eyes,” Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium spokesperson Stephannie Kettle said. “Leucism and albinism generally leave animals at a disadvantage as they are not able to camouflage as well, are more prone to sunburn and can also be associated with other genetic mutations.”

Among sea turtles, leucism is not a rare condition. Kettles said Mote documents leucistic hatchlings every year.

The excavation was conducted by permitted volunteers of the Longboat Key Turtle Watch operating under Mote’s turtle permit. Volunteers named the hatchling Blanca.

oaters looking to beach on Greer Island, known locally as Beer Can Island, are now restricted to half the area after signs and buoys restricting access were placed along the shoreline of the popular northern Longboat Key destination.

The signs follow an emergency dredge that was completed about two weeks ago.

Signs enforce the newly permanent rules, which allow swimmers, kayakers and paddleboarders in the restricted zone but no powered vessels. Town officials were set to enact the no-motor zones earlier this summer but had to reset and reclear their plans with state officials following an emergency dredging operation to reopen a narrow passage between the lagoon west of the highway bridge and Sarasota Bay to the east.

The work altered the landscape of the sand spit, prompting a revised review of plans by state officials.

Buoys were placed shortly after the signs. Both state that motorboats are prohibited in the zone.

Motorized vessels still will be allowed to beach and anchor in unrestricted areas of the spit just past the buoys and under the bridge, though some boaters have been critical about that area being affected by swift currents during tidal changes. “(The restricted zone) will extend from a point a little northward of the dock, about 180 feet to the north and then that zone will conclude,” Public Works Director Isaac Brownman said in a “Talk of the Town” segment.

“There is no restriction beyond that as you head west under the bridge.”

New signs stand in the sand on Greer Island marking a new restricted zone.

Restrictions are placed on boaters, keeping them away from the dockside area in hopes of reducing noise.

A navigation zone will be maintained and enforced in the narrow channel that connects the Greer Island lagoon to Sarasota Bay. Property owners along the lagoon and first-responder vessels will have access to the area.

The signs come after an emergency dredge was completed to move sand away from the Land’s End dock.

Property owners of Land’s End dock right by the bridge reported sand reaching up to their dock, creating a hazard and a nuisance.

Brownman said the sand that filled the passage likely came from beach nourishment projects nearby.

“Over time, the way the currents and dynamics work on this part of the island, a lot of this material would either wash into the pass and we could dredge it back out,” he said.

“Some of that material would actually wrap around and deposit here where the velocities are slower and the currents are slower.”

Crews worked to reopen the passage between the lagoon to the west and Sarasota Bay to the east for wildlife access, tidal flushing and boats.

About 1,500 cubic yards of beachcompatible sand was removed from the waterway in the project that cost

about $117,000.

Sand dredged into the large mound by the bridge is planned to be moved and placed back on beaches on the Gulf of Mexico side of the bridge.

The project is planned for completion by the end of the year.

Permits for that work have been issued by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Florida Department of Transportation. The town plans on seeking bids this fall with potential completion by the end of the year or early 2023.

Beyond Canal 1A, the waterway from the lagoon into the bay underneath the bridge to Anna Maria Island, the town also is working on a plan to systematically dredge all

SOURCE: When bacteria levels reach unsafe levels, no-swim advisories go up. But that bacteria can be indicative of several situations.

o-swim advisories have popped up at several Sarasota and Manatee county locations this summer, strongly advising beachgoers to stay out of the water while stopping short of actually closing the shorelines to swimmers.

Typically prompted by routine weekly tests that yield results of higher-than-acceptable concentrations of enterococcus bacteria, the advisories often are rescinded days later after follow-up testing shows levels had returned to normal.

The stakes are high when no-swim advisories are posted, and they are not posted lightly, health officials say, adding the out-of-bounds levels of the bacteria can be indicative of several conditions, ranging from routine to serious. Health officials also stress that concentrations of enterococcus bacteria are not related to red-tide outbreaks.

Still, the microscopic organisms can lead to health problems.

“When these bacteria are found at high levels in recreational waters, there is a risk that some people may become ill,” Sarasota County Health and Human Services spokesman Steve Huard wrote in an email.

Enterococcus occurs naturally in the intestine but can cause inflammation and infection if introduced elsewhere in the body.

Elderly individuals, children and immunocompromised individuals are more susceptible to becoming ill if exposed to water with high bacteria counts through swallowing or a wound. If the bacteria gets into an open wound, infections and rashes can occur.

ADVISORY SCIENCE

While the high levels of bacteria can originate from a number of sources, the true source of the bacteria is hard to determine because that level of

testing is extensive and costly, Executive Director of the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program Dave Tomasko said.

“The source does matter,” he said.

“It’s so expensive to do the source assessment that they rightfully use the bacteria as an indicator.”

The advisories, which have not been lasting for longer than a couple of days, are rescinded only after the bacteria levels are back to acceptable levels for swimming.

“If it’s coming from decomposing seaweed and the tide carries that seaweed away, then the source of that bacteria will not be there anymore,” Tomasko said of a potential way the levels can return to normal naturally.

Higher bacteria measurements can also indicate other problems,although none are known to have drastic effects on the ocean itself.

“If I mow my lawn and I am blowing my grass clippings out into the bay or a place close to the ocean, the bacteria that decompose the grass clippings aren’t poisonous, but they are going to be indicative of an organic material that does not belong there,” he said.

When bacteria breaks down the organic material, it uses up oxygen and increases biological oxygen demand. The oxygen decrease associated with decomposing material can kill fish rather than the bacteria itself.

“It’s not a good idea to swim in waters with elevated bacteria, no matter where it comes from,” he said.

“It is just that we do not know exactly what to do to decrease and prevent them unless we know where they come from.”

TESTING PROCEDURES

The Department of Health Sarasota collects water samples every Monday from each of the 16 beaches in the county. Once the samples are collected, they are sent to a laboratory for testing. The county usually receives results the next day.

“If they are within standard, we post the results online and resample the following Monday as normal,” Huard said. “If the sample does not meet standard, we resample the following morning for confirmatory testing; if those results are not within standard, we issue an advisory and resample the following morning.

We’ll generally resample and test until the advisory can be lifted.”

The statewide program tests for enterococci, which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recommended states adopt as a saltwater quality indicator.

“According to studies conducted by the EPA, enterococci have a greater correlation with swimming-associated gastrointestinal illness in both marine and fresh waters than other bacterial indicator organisms and are less likely to ‘die off’ in saltwater,” Huard wrote. “If an enterococci results were observed to exceed 70 colony-forming units per 100 milliliters of beach water sampled and a resampling result also exceeds this value, then an advisory would be issued for the sampling site.”

Posted signs advising the public are typically posted on the affected beaches.

The health department continually reminds beachgoers in their announcements that the higher bacteria levels detected are not because

Nutrient control is one method that Tomasko said could potentially aid in lowering levels of bacteria from decomposing seaweed.

“Maybe the reason why you have so much decomposing algae is because you are loading your bay with more nitrogen than it can safely accommodate,” he said. “The extra nitrogen coming into the bay could be helping to create the algal bloom that is decomposing and closing down our beaches because of the bacteria.”

Heavy rains days earlier can often sweep up sources of the bacteria in inland stormwater runoff, leading to elevated levels miles from their original source.

“Enterococci are enteric bacteria that normally inhabit the intestinal tract of humans and animals,” Huard wrote. “The presence of enteric bacteria can be an indication of fecal pollution, which may come from stormwater runoff, pets and wildlife, and human sewage. If they are present in high concentrations in recreational waters and are ingested while swimming or enter the skin through a cut or sore, they may cause human disease, infections or rashes.”

No Longboat Key beaches have been affected, though several to the north in Manatee County have.

While the advisories do not prohibit entering the water, it is strongly discouraged. Individuals likely won’t experience infection if standing in the water, but when an advisory is in place, submerging your body or head in the water will increase the likelihood of infection.

The most common illnesses that occur from being exposed to the bacteria are ear infections, cold-like symptoms, rashes and infections of open wounds and intestinal issues.

To close the beach down entirely, Tomasko said it is likely that strong evidence of high levels of bacteria, particularly from sewage, would need to be present.

NO-SWIM ADVISORIES

On July 28, health officials posted the first no-swim advisories of the summer season in Sarasota and Bradenton.

Since the first round of advisories have been placed, the following beaches have been reported to have high-than-acceptable levels of enterococcus bacteria: n Siesta Key Beach (twice) n Bird Key Park and the Ringling Causeway n Service Club Beach in Venice n Venice Fishing Pier n Brohard Beach n Caspersen Beach n Manasota Key

rista Homes is awaiting final state and regional permitting to begin work on a 14,000-square-foot multitenant commercial property on Longboat Key. Mark Ursini, founder and president of the company, has submitted permit applications and blueprints for approval to the Florida Department of Transportation and the Southwest Florida Water Management District.

“The plans are being finalized; the blueprints are being finalized,” Ursini said. “We need final approval from SWFWMD and FDOT before we can break ground.”

The company intends to construct two new homes as well as a commercial space with room for offices, a medical practice, retail and potentially a restaurant at 3120 and 3150 Gulf of Mexico Drive.

“We wanted to move our main offices out to Longboat,” he said.

“That is where 90% of our work is.

We do some in downtown Sarasota as well, but we have been so busy on the Key, especially Country Club Shores, we have been turning down work in Sarasota and Siesta Key.” The project has been delayed from the original timeline, which would have had the space and homes already in the process of construction.

The construction would allow for a potential solution to flooding and drainage problems experienced by residents of the adjacent Buttonwood Harbor community.

The town’s Planning and Zoning Board voted unanimously in April in favor of Ursini’s proposal to build on the 1.38 acres of commercially zoned land.

The Town Commission further granted an easement on July 1 to aid in drainage plans.

The town will be aiding in covering costs of the construction of the drainage plan that affects the intersection of Buttonwood Drive and Gulf of Mexico Drive. Cost estimates for the plan come in around $70,000.

“With the whole development, the only concern really was the drainage issues that Buttonwood Harbor Association have been experiencing,” Ursini said. “I assured them that we will work with them closely to not only not cause further drainage problems but solve it as best we can on our side.”

Ursini and his team worked with engineers, the neighborhood association and the town’s Public Works Department to formulate the plan they now have in place.

The drainage system will rely on a

T-shaped dry retention feature about 2-3 feet deep with a drain box built to an elevation that would accept water once it rose to a certain height. While runoff is held in the feature before it drains off, solids and impurities will filter out naturally.

A series of yard drains in the residential properties and new drains installed at the west end of Buttonwood Drive would be tied into the system, designed to eliminate a standing problem in which water often sheets off the state-maintained highway into the neighborhood.

From there, the water would flow in a pipe north to Monroe Street, where pavement ends but the road is mapped all the way to the bayfront shoreline with no plans for development. A swale would lead the water the rest of the way into Crane’s Bayou.

Upkeep of the dry retention area would be the responsibility of the landowner.

The proposal brought before the board calls for 43 parking spaces, 37 of which are required in the current configuration. At this time, there are no firm tenants besides Brista Homes. Ursini hopes a walkin medical clinic will occupy one of the spaces.

“I just thought it would be a good fit for that area,” he said. “There’s nothing really close by, and with the St. Regis development coming in, I thought there was a need for the community.”

If a restaurant ends up as part of the planning and zoning, approval would be required. The restaurant’s parking requirements already were built into the original plan but based on 1,500 square feet of floor space.

“We’re excited about bringing this project to the community as well as some good commercial tenants, whether it be a doctor, dentist or other professionals,” Ursini said.

“That’s kind of what we are gearing toward. We feel there is a need there, especially mid-Key.”

Upon arrival nearby, police and fire responders learned a personal-watercraft operator aided the three in returning to their boat. Fire-rescue personnel met the boat at the Coquina Beach boat ramp to medically check the three, who were reported to be uninjured. Manatee County Sheriff’s Office personnel and personnel with Bradenton Beach police also assisted. The boat departed after the incident.

Kiwanis Club thanks town retiree Linkogle

T

he air in the Lazy Lobster on Aug. 18 smelled like coffee, sounded like laughter and felt like appreciation. About 20 members of the Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key met for their first meeting after a summer break.

The club thanked now-retired James Linkogle for his 23 years of service to Longboat Key as the Public Works Department project manager and welcomed his successor, Guy Matricciani.

In 2005, when the town celebrated 50 years of incorporation, it also gave Kiwanis an official commitment to assist with the Longboat Key Gourmet Lawn Party each year.

Kiwanis President Michael Garey entertained the crowd with harrowing and humorous tales of lawn parties past. There was the windy year when volunteers had to run after tents blowing across the fairways at the event’s former site, the Longboat Key Club.

There was the year that no one wanted to stake the tents. Town workers and Kiwanis members agreed weights would be better, but for insurance purposes,

the tents had to be staked in the ground.

“They get to the very last tent, and all of a sudden, here comes the water out of the ground,” Garey said.

Good Linkogle was on hand to call in his comrades at the Public Works Department to fix the staked pipe.

There was also the year it poured just after all the tents were set up.

“You can imagine all these little tents. They catch the water; they don’t always let it run off,” Linkogle joked. The set-up crew was soaking wet, but the party went off without a hitch.

The rainy year was when the event was still hosted by Temple Beth Israel. As it grew in size and popularity, it was moved to the Longboat Key Club. Last year, it was held at the Town Center Green.

A food and drink festival held each December, the Lawn Party is a staple of the social season. Last year’s event raised $90,000 for the Children’s Guardian Fund.

hile driving into work the morning of primary election day 2022, I passed St. Armands Key Lutheran Church, which serves as a polling station for Precincts 211 and 213. Sarasota City Commission candidate Carl Shoffstall stood outside shaking hands with voters clad in red, white and blue.

There’s something about election day, whether the primary or general, that brings an excitement to the air. Watching constituents exercise their right to vote brings about pride for our community and our democratic republic as a whole.

I love seeing social media posts with parents taking their children with them to the polls to vote. Or the proud parents whose child is now 18 and can officially vote in his or her first election. I love the “I Voted” stickers sported by adults who haven’t included stickers in their attire since elementary school.

By the time you read this column, the results of the 2022 primary elections will be out. But it’s worth acknowledging the efforts of what went into this year’s election.

First, we’ll take the newspaper perspective. That’s what we know best.

Sadly, as an increasing number of newspapers disappear, research has shown that communities that lack a local news source have more corrupt government. According to Northwestern University’s “The State of Local News 2022” report, “In communities without a credible source of local news, voter participation declines, corruption in both government and business increases and local residents end up paying more in taxes and at checkout.”

That is why we’re proud to serve as one of your local sources of information, providing candidate profiles in print and online. Longtime readers are all too familiar with Editor and CEO Matt Walsh’s recommendations and endorsements, a practice many news organizations don’t provide anymore.

Whether you agree or disagree with his choices, the point is to spark discussion and new ideas.

“It’s difficult for so many people, with their busy lives of managing their families, jobs and businesses, to stay up to date on the candidates,” Walsh says. “So we think it’s one of the jobs of a newspaper to help our readers sort out some of the differences and nuances to the candidates. And when we make recommendations, I think our readers know we are recommending

those candidates we think will do two things — defend and promote individual liberty and make people’s lives better.”

In our newsrooms, election coverage is almost always exciting. All of our journalists reporting election results are plied with pizza to tie them over into late hours, and our printer’s presses are on standby, holding back on preparing pages one and three of our papers until we send the final election results.

Circulating these election results can be quite scary as well. I’ll never forget that shortly after I became publisher in 2016, I received a phone call from our circulation manager at 5 a.m. the morning after the 2016 primary election when Tropical Storm Hermine was moving up the Gulf Coast of Florida.

“We can’t deliver the papers. It’s too dangerous,” he said.

“You have to get the papers out,” I frantically replied, “They have the election results!”

Luckily, it looks like the weather forecast includes only a few scattered thunderstorms for this week’s election result delivery. Of course, election results are posted and available on YourObserver.com in real time.

Sure, we’re all a bit sick of the direct mailers that stuff our mailboxes, the constant barrage of text messages received by political parties and PACs and the signs crowding our street corners. But you have to give credit to each and every single candidate who had the courage to run for public office. No matter your beliefs or party affiliate, the work that goes into campaigning for public office is daunting. And, quite

honestly, thankless.

These individuals are offering up their time for public service for little pay to help make their communities a better place and make sure your voices are heard. But these campaigns can be draining with the attacks on their character in the media and by their opponents.

Florida Rep. Tommy Gregory, who will run for the newly drawn District 72 in the general election in November, once shared that in his first run for the State House 2018, his political adviser pulled him aside and told him that he shouldn’t take everything so personally and that public officials need to have thick skin.

Indeed, this year’s primary candidates had thick skin. Especially in the highly contested Sarasota County School Board race that brought Gov. Rick DeSantis here last weekend for a rally and the accusations of anti-Semitic remarks used in digital billboards campaigning against Lauren Kurnov.

If informed citizens make better communities, then it looks like Sarasota and Manatee counties’ citizens are engaged and passionate.

Voter turnout in the 2020 primary election was more than 32%, which was the highest in Sarasota County in more than a decade. As of 3 p.m.

Tuesday, voter turnout was already at 31.67%.

From someone who used to dress up like Susan B. Anthony as a kid, thanks for your vote. It counts.

BUILDING A BASEL FROM

SCRATCH Jeffery Kin spent 15 years developing drama at the Players Centre, and now he’s hoping to build a bigger stage for all of Sarasota’s arts organizations.

or years, Jeffery Kin made the most of theatrical spaces, milking them for every ounce of drama and pathos.

Now he’s using Sarasota’s arts community as a larger canvas, and he’s hoping to pull the groups together as collaborators in building a weeklong arts festival.

Kin, who calls himself “a theater person with a farmer’s work ethic,” is thinking big, and he’s circling November 2024 as the debut for his still unnamed festival.

He’s been laying the groundwork for the past nine months, assembling a group of employees and building a board for the incorporation of Sarasota Rising, his production company.

Kin says he plans for his company to be a 501c3 organization as of Oct. 1, and he’s going to spend the next 26 months moving mountains to give Sarasota its own Art Basel-type event.

“We want to drum up cultural tourism. It’s going to start local, then statewide, then the Southeast and then the nation,” he says. “In 10 years, we want this to be an international festival. We will want people to be able to say, ‘We’ve got to be in Sarasota at this time, because we’re going to see stuff that we would never be able to see anywhere else.’”

Kin, who spent 15 years with The Players Centre for Performing Arts, came to this mission organically. He says he was happy in his old role as artistic director for the Players when Mark Kauffman of the Downtown Improvement District asked him to help in recruiting a festival director.

Kin swished that idea around in his mind and immediately recognized that he’d love the opportunity to create a lasting institution. In the past nine months, he’s embarked on what he calls an “arts nourishment,” visiting festivals all over the country.

He went to Sun Fest in West Palm Beach and met with the organizers, where they gave him a behind-the-scenes tour and talked about their growth and development.

He volunteered at the Columbus Arts Festival just to see how things get done on a granular level.

He went to the Spoleto Festival USA in South Carolina and several other regional events, and he came away convinced that all the ingredients for success are already here.

“A festival brings a different vibe to a community. A festival really is a celebration of who you are,” he says. “The meat of our festival is already here. The meat and potatoes SEE FROM SCRATCH, PAGE 10A

are all the great organizations that we all know and love. Large and small.

“What we get to do as an organization is be the icing on the cake. We get to bring in a great band, we get to bring in a great dance concert, we get to bring in something unique.”

Kin doesn’t want to pull the arts groups under his umbrella; he wants everyone to share in the process. His first benefactor was the Downtown Improvement District, which gave him $100,000 in seed money.

And immediately, he had to disappoint them because they wanted the festival to be in August.

That’s just not feasible in Sarasota for a number of reasons including the heat. Some arts organizations are shuttered for the summer due to the lack of snowbird customers.

Kin shared a questionnaire with all of the local arts organizations through the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County, and what came back as the best time to hold a festival would be October or November. That’s when theater and arts organizations are ramping back up here; they wouldn’t have to do anything beyond share the programming they’re preparing.

“Let’s say The Players has a musical happening in that time,” he says.

“That’s great. That’s all you have to do. What I’m hoping to be able to do is to bring them more customers, to bring them more butts in seats.”

Kin wants the festival to cast the widest net possible.

He wants to include as many arts organizations as possible, from the ones with their own venues to the ones looking for a place to play.

He wants to collaborate amongst organizations to develop unique programming, and he wants to take over downtown streets for art fairs.

What might that look like?

Kin didn’t want to name specific organizations because none of them have committed to be a part of the festival yet, but he hopes to have a wide sampling of performing arts, and he wants to get the hotels and restaurants and museums involved

to better cater to incoming tourists.

“We’re going to start small. It’s not going to be Spoleto overnight,” he says. “But what we really want to do is organize our arts groups so that if they have a space, they’re going to produce something great in the timeline of the festival.

“And that’s really all the Festival is.

Just do what you do. Be brilliant, be excellent, create something wonderful in that timeframe.”

It’s a gigantic vision, and he said the community has been more than receptive.

Kin says he wasn’t sure how many

organizations would reply to his questionnaire, but most of them did.

They see potential for the festival and want to be a part of it.

But there’s still a lot of work to do.

Kin says the Downtown Improvement District is currently weighing whether it can authorize another $100,000 in funding for his venture.

He also said Sarasota Rising raised around $225,000 in its first year of existence, and he hopes to double that next year. By the time the festival is born, Kin expects it to cost about $1 million to operate.

To arrive at those numbers, Kin hired a consultant named Vern Biatt, a certified festival and event executive, to help him plot the event’s future, and he also said that philanthropist Ariane Dart of the Dart Family Foundation has been a great resource for him.

Now, he says, the festival has to grow into its own footprint.

“The timing is perfect,” he says.

“The relationship is awesome because she knows how to get stuff done on a large scale, and I know how to pull together an organization.

“We really are starting to build

this together, knowing that Oct. 1, the start of our second year, we’ll have a board. We’ll put them to work because there’s a lot of work to do in the next two years.”

They still have to name the festival. They have to organize which arts organizations are willing and able to participate and they have to line up all the venues to do that.

For now, Kin is working out of his kitchen, and he’s traveling the country auditing festivals.

Just last week, he went to a Tennessee Williams Festival in St. Louis, and he’s prepping for an event in Orlando.

Kin meets once a month with a group he calls his “startup” team.

They’ve put together a mission values statement, and they have a logo for Sarasota Rising, but they know the clock is ticking on the way to November 2024.

“We’re building something from scratch, which is exciting in itself,” he says. “We’re really creating a long-term organization that’s not going to just be a fly-by-night thing.

“This is something that we can build on year after year.”

Jeffery Kin says he developed a lot of relationships during his time in Sarasota and hopes to nurture even more through his festival.

DISTINCTIVE DISHES An occasional series on signature dishes from local restaurants.

WHAT’S THE DISH: Walt’s Fish Market has been filling Sarasota bellies with fresh fish for more than 100 years, and there’s one dish on the menu that never falls out of favor.

Brett Wallin, the fourth-generation owner of Walt’s, says that the Captain’s Platter, a delectable mix of red snapper filet, lobster tail and sea scallops, is his most popular dish.

Most of the time, in fact, he doesn’t see people eating it; he sees debris they’ve left behind.

“When I’m walking around and talking to people, the only reason I know they ordered the platter is because only the shell of the lobster is left,” he says. “Everything else is gone.”

HOW IT’S MADE: The star of this dish is the super-fresh seafood brought in by Wallin’s purveyors, and all three elements are prepared simply with butter and house seasoning.

Wallin says the lobster tail, the snapper filet and the scallops all are grilled, and they’re accompanied by garlic parsley potatoes and carrots roasted in honey and garlic.

“This is a white tablecloth dinner at a fish house,” he says. “I love all walks of life. I want everybody from the garbage man to the mayor to eat at my restaurant. That’s kind of what we have here. You can have a $40 dinner. And then the husband could have a shrimp dish for 13 bucks. We see that all the time.”

THE FAMILY BUSINESS: Wallin’s great-grandfather, Claus Wallin, began fishing the Sarasota waters a century ago, and his son Walt Sr., later took over.

Walt’s son — Brett Wallin’s dad, Tom Wallin — began working in the fish market from an early age, and he later opened the current location of Walt’s Fish Market on Tamiami Trail.

Tom Wallin took over the business from Walt in 1981, and decades later, he would pass it down to his son Brett. Brett Wallin started in the family business as a teenager, and he says he loved it from the start.

“I’d take my 30-foot Whaler to school and tie it onto the tree and then go to school,” he says. “I’d come to school wet, smelling like fish because I was spearfishing before.

The teachers would call my dad and say, ‘Your kid smells like fish.’

“And he’d say to them, ‘What do you think we do for a living?’”

FRESH CATCH: Wallin says that sometimes the fish come directly from the boat to the market, and you won’t just see it in the display case.

If you’re there at the right time, you might see a truck roll up with about 600 pounds of snapper.

“My dad always said, ‘If you start with the fresh ingredients, you don’t have to worry about all the sauces,’” says Wallin.

“You’re starting with fresh product.

It’s right there. That’s what I’m going to sell my grandmother, my mom and all of my favorite customers.”

Right when you sit down, you’ll get a taste of their smoked fish dip, which is a reminder of simpler times gone by. Wallin says that smoked mullet was one of the first things the Wallins ever sold at Walt’s because they were able to preserve the fish longer by smoking it. He says he enjoys giving customers a taste before they even open the menu.

“It’s just neat to be able to do that.

Even during COVID or inflation,” he says. “It’s a very expensive thing for me to do, but I’m going to continue doing it. I’ll never take it away.”

WATER’S FINE SUP Yoga SRQ is a mobile, floating yoga studio. Ouellette loads the back of her red Ford Ranger with boards and paddles and goes where the wind is most likely not to blow.

Homebase is Ski-A-Rees, but the town of Longboat Key allows her to use Overlook Point as a backup location. Private lessons are also an option.

Spots are limited to eight students per class and are led by Ouellette, who offers credentials in both yoga and watersports.

Ouellette has a bachelor’s degree in physiotherapy from the University of Ottawa and studied ashtanga yoga in India.

She’s also a professional water skier and stunt woman. She appeared in the Waterworld show at Universal Studios in Japan from 2011 to 2014.

Weekly SUP yoga sessions are held on Wednesday and Saturday mornings at 10 a.m.

board can pop on an oyster bed. If too deep, anchoring the board is impossible unless you have a dock nearby to tie onto.

Once anchored, class begins with some basic stretches. As the poses get more complicated, holding one pose or switching poses can feel dicey as the board rocks.

Ouellette offers options ranging from beginner to advanced.

Steph Ouellette holds classes out of two locations: Overlook Park and City Island.

Practicing yoga on the open water adds a connection to nature that can’t be found gazing at four walls inside a studio.

In downward facing dog pose, Ouellette directed the class to notice the upside-down mangroves behind them. During the final savasana pose, students were encouraged to hang their limbs off the boards to feel the water on their hands and feet.

Once the structured class concludes, playtime begins. This is when the brave attempt headstands and the rest opt for a drink of water or a swim. After a quick paddle to shore, all land legs are returned as loose and limber as a pair of jellyfish tentacles.

Try standing on your head as the board bobs with the tide.

Now that’s a challenge.

No, that intimidating mental image isn’t required when taking part in stand-up paddleboard yoga, but you will need to know how to swim. Life vests are provided when taking a class, but you can’t lay flat in a savasana pose wearing one.

Owner of SUP Yoga SRQ Steph Ouellette says kids can do it as long as they’re strong enough to paddle a big board. The boards aren’t heavy, but they are specifically designed for yoga, so they’re long enough to stretch out on and wider than normal for stability.

Combining the peaceful activity normally relegated to a mat with watersports adds an element of zen, but it also introduces concerns unknown to land-based instructors.

All in all, though, it’s catching on, Ouellette said.

It’s a quick five- to 10-minute paddle out to the “yoga studio” from the shore. If standing up on the board seems scary, staying down on your knees is another option. The body acts as a sail, so staying low will keep the board at a slower, more controlled pace.

Ouellette, 41, holds weekly classes either launching from City Island or Longboat Key. Why the different venues?

The wind determines where class will be held. An email goes out the night before to let students know where to arrive.

The caveat to a yoga studio with no solid floor is that without a careful, knowledgeable instructor, the class could float away.

Boards are attached to a tow line with weighted bags anchoring each individual board to prevent a pileup of windblown yogis in the mangroves.

“I’ve got enough experience now that I know,” Ouellette said, “But if I don’t judge the wind correctly and I don’t put down enough or heavy enough anchors, you get all these people on, and the anchor lines are just getting dragged across the bottom with all your people on it.”

The water’s depth is an additional concern. If too shallow, an inflatable

here did we come from? Is there life on other planets? Thanks to the James Webb Space Telescope, launched on Dec. 25, 2021, which is beginning to beam back photos of the universe, Frank Sulzman says scientists are closer to answering those questions.

“The Webb is like a time machine,” Sulzman said at the Rotary Club’s monthly meeting on Aug. 16, explaining how the light from distant stars can take millions of years to arrive. “You’ll be able to take different slices of time in the age of the universe and see how things progressed.”

About 25 members and guests gathered in person and on Zoom to hear Sulzman discuss the new space-based telescope and images NASA released on July 12. Sulzman managed NASA’s Biomedical Research Program and was a space radiation program executive before retiring in 2013.

During the Q&A, Nick Driver wanted to know why the images were in color when the raw images taken by the telescope were not.

Sulzman’s PowerPoint presentation included a slide with Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” next to the telescope’s image of Carina nebula. He said that while beautiful and informative, graphic designers shift the color spectrum into what’s visible to the eye.

“The Webb Space Telescope looks at the red and infrared part of the spectrum our eyes cannot see,” he said.

The Webb can see through “space dust” that the Hubble Space Telescope cannot. It also has a larger sun shield and orbits about a million miles from Earth where astronauts can’t reach it. The Hubble orbits a few hundred miles from Earth.

Astronauts have repaired and upgraded Hubble since its launch in 1990.

“There were more than 340 single-point failures possible in this deployment of the Webb,” Sulzman said. “If any one of them didn’t work, the whole mission would have failed.”

The Webb took more than 20 years to develop and cost about $10 billion to build and operate.

he Longboat Library received so many donations in the spring and early summer that the building’s back room was filled with boxes and bags of books. On Aug. 10, volunteers cleaned house and had a half-off sale to make room.

“Our collection has really changed,” volunteer Barbara Torrence said. “The things we have for sale are a lot of new materials, and we’re getting rid of a lot of the things that have been on the shelf for a while.”

The books that didn’t sell will be donated to Goodwill and also distributed around town into Little Free Library boxes, community boxes that encourage booksharing and provide 24/7 access.

Volunteer Mary McGrath left with a bag-full and was headed to the Little Free Library at Bayfront Park.

There are at least three around the island. The other two are in the

butterfly garden at Bicentennial Park and on the corner of Sloop Lane and Gulf of Mexico Drive.

Susan Phillips, assistant to the town manager, walked over from Town Hall to pick up books on her lunch break. She reads them and then stocks the Little Free Library.

“I keep a stack of books in my office,” she said, “I’ve got six books in there now that I’ll walk over to the park.”

It looks like a resident hung the Little Free Library on a tree near Sloop Lane, but the other two were furnished by the town. After the first one went in at Bayfront Park, Phillips requested one for Bicentennial Park, too. She asked library volunteers if they’d help keep it stocked.

At 50 cents a book on sale at the library, the Little Free Library boxes are the only place on Longboat to find a better deal.
