“We get a lot of calls that people are disturbing nests on the beach because they’re roped-off areas but never that there’s an injured bird here that needs help,” he said.

A family was picnicking near Lido Beach when their 3-yearold noticed the distressed bird, so they flagged down an officer.

When officers saw the bird couldn’t fly and wasn’t chirping, it was transported to Save Our Seabirds.

The mockingbird was too young to leave its nest. Now it enjoys hourly meals in the baby bird section of the hospital and will be released on Lido Beach when ready.

Dream Weaver occupied a high-traffic area on St. Armands Circle for decades.

Weaver is now following suit.

Morgan said she doesn’t know what to expect for the art couture movement, and she personally fears for some artists she has supported and nurtured throughout the years.

“It’s tough in a way that you don’t get rich,” she said. “It’s a great business to be in because you have great customers and great designers and other store owners. It’s a lifestyle choice.”

Morgan, a former potter, said she turned to art couture after experiencing carpal tunnel syndrome.

She opened a craft store in Martha’s Vineyard and then Dream Weaver, which started in Massachusetts in 1986 before opening its St. Armands location. In both cases, she was in the right place at the right time.

Morgan said she began right at the beginning of the art-to-wear movement, and there were only about 20-25 stores nationwide carrying the kind of clothing that Dream Weaver specialized in.

Now, decades later, she has 3,000 people on her customer email list and 1,700 subscribers to see her video emails that go out twice weekly.

Morgan said her customers have given her emotional support but also implored her to stay in business.

“A couple people have approached me to get into something else. Combining art-to-wear clothing with other products,” she said. “We might find a location downtown and partner with somebody else. You never know.

“But I need time off. I have never had any time off, other than a week

Morgan, the proprietor of Dream Weaver Collection, will close her high-end fashion boutique within the next few weeks, ending an era that began in September 1989.

And she’s not opening another business ... at least for now. She’s planning on living a quiet life on her Fruitville Road ranch and enjoying a life without a lot of obligations.

“I’m going back to the land,” she said. “I came from Massachusetts and had big gardens and dogs. Now I have 10 acres. Two miniature donkeys. Five cows. Fifteen chickens.

The plan shouldn’t seem surprising, since customers have become accustomed to nearly always having one of Morgan’s dogs in the store over the years.

Morgan, who has seen the Circle and Sarasota grow and blossom around her, said that COVID presented circumstances difficult for a business owner to recover from.

She had already worked her business through the previous economic downturn.

Morgan said she will miss her customers and designers, and she noted that her staff is more like family. Some Dream Weaver employees, in fact, have worked with her for decades.

The original plan, she said, was to close down at the end of July. But she’s done as much business in the last 10 days as she would normally do in two months. Dream Weaver is running out of merchandise, which might mean that it closes its doors by the end of June.

In her nearly 33 years in business on the Circle, Morgan has witnessed a lot of change in the area. Morgan said that there used to be a lot more high-end stores around her, and now she said the area is becoming a little more “beachy.”

“More T-shirts and ice cream. The big stores are gone,” she said of the St. Armands Circle shopping experience. “The rents are so high. You really have to sell a lot of things or have a major markup. And we don’t have a major markup, so we needed to sell a lot.”

Morgan said she doesn’t know what will come next at her location.

Dream Weaver was preceded by a short-lived swimsuit store, and it persisted for decades.

“I have a lot of customers that all they have in their closet is Dream Weaver stuff,” she said. “They are the ones that are freaking out.”

Shifting sand s The latest beach renourishment project came in early and under budget, but Longboat Key faces a long-term fight to alleviate the effects of erosion.

Over time, sand has shifted from the west into Longboat Pass, forming a wraparound spit that now is closing off the lagoon inside the island. The blue tracing on the images is the mean high-water line as of July 2017.

The town is planning a project to open up the canal between the spit and the north end of the Key, as well as a larger project to move the sand from inside the lagoon to the outside of the spit.

The project aims to restore Greer Island to its 2006 conditions.

The plans and budget for the project still need to be finalized, but it could begin by the end of the year.

hen it comes to making sure Longboat Key’s beaches are stocked with sand, the town’s work is never done.

To that point, coastal engineers updated the Longboat Key Town Commission June 6 on the results of the dredging project from about a year ago, as well as what’s ahead for the Key’s beaches.

Public Works Director Isaac Brownman and coastal engineer Al Browder said Longboat Key’s last beach nourishment project was completed last year ahead of schedule and under budget, but there’s still a long-term battle to control erosion.

Browder said that nearly a million yards of sand were dredged from Passage Key Inlet, Longboat Pass and New Pass and placed back on the beaches, and Brownman said the project came in $3.6 million under budget and took only six months instead of three years. The work, which was conducted between April and October of 2021, was hastened by the presence of contractors being used for similar tasks by other member jurisdictions.

Browder, discussing the work that’s already been done, said that 750,000 cubic yards of sand were dredged from the Passage Key inlet and placed along 4.4 miles of the Longboat Key shoreline. All of that sand, said Browder, was taken 10-15 miles from its original dredging point by barge to a pump-out location and then moved along the beach as needed.

“We did not truck any of this material through town to get it out to the beach,” he said. “That would have been very, very challenging for everyone involved.”

The major part of the north end restructuring involved constructing five rock groins — two south of North Shore Road and three north of it — and 364 “marine mattresses” designed to direct the flow of sand over the coming months and years.

Those structures, which involved 10,400 tons of armor stone and 1,280 tons of stones in metal cages that look like mattresses — are designed to work with erosion instead of attempting to stop it.

Browder and Brownman prepared satellite photos that have shown how the sediment near Greer Island has changed over time, and the goal long-term is to be able to change the erosion and sediment shifting patterns to alleviate the spit and restore access to the channel.

“Once this thing fully equilibrates, we hope to see a reasonable amount of sand — key emphasis being reasonable — pass through the structure and feed the spit,” said Browder. “But not feed the spit too much that it just runs into the eastern end of the of the whole feature.

“It’s a real balancing act here at the north end to satisfy all the recreational uses and desires and not have a whole bunch of sand end up in the canal in the pass.”

There were also two other areas of dredging and beach nourishment conducted as part of the project.

Eighty thousand cubic yards were dredged from Longboat Pass, and another 170,000 cubic yards of sand were taken from the New Pass area.

That sand was used alongside 1.2 miles of shoreline by Gulfside Road and on the Key’s southern end.

On the north end, Browder said that engineers are watching as the spit shoreline evolves and are monitoring for scarps; they will update their beach survey this month.

sioners want an annual update on beach conditions, they should probably shoot for sometime between September and November to take advantage of the new survey.

On the south end, engineers are seeking permits to strengthen the upper portion of an existing rock groin along New Pass, and they hope to be able to do that this winter.

“What we intend to do is come along the north side of this thing, peel back some of the sand, place some smaller stone to plug the gaps but then create what we call a cutoff wall,” said Browder. “It’ll be made out of a geo-textile fabric kind of felt … and then have armor stone — a long, narrow run of armor stone — placed along the north side of the

existing structure. That will tighten up the flow, tighten up the structure to not allow sand to flow through it.”

Brownman said that future projects will focus on battling sand that has migrated and expanded the Greer Island spit, and there will be a dredging project to clear sand from the lagoon and improve channel access.

A preliminary dredging project was conducted in early 2021 to push the waterline away from the Land’s End dock. The proposed future dredging would remove 25,000 to 30,000 cubic yards of sand from an area known as Canal 1A, and the sediment would be placed along the shoreline.

The dredging will go down to a depth of 5 feet in Canal 1A, and sand

will be cleared from both sides of the bridge area over time. That project could begin by the end of 2022, but the plans and budgeting process have yet to be finalized.

Brownman said 15-year management permits have already been approved by both the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The next major beach renourishment cycle is scheduled for fiscal year 2029.

“When we peel this back, we won’t see the rate of filling back in that we did before,” he said.

Pickleball hearing slated for June 21 The Longboat Key Planning and Zoning Board is gearing up to field a June 21 hearing regarding a plan to build four pickleball courts at the Longboat Key Club, adjacent to its Harbourside Tennis Gardens.

The P&Z board unanimously recommended the court proposal to the Town Commission for approval in April, but residents of the neighboring Winding Oaks community raised objections about the potential noise produced by the new courts.

The residents also said they had not been notified of the April meeting in time to attend, and town officials found that the notices had indeed arrived too late in many cases.

The rescheduled hearing was requested by attorney Edward Willner of the Sarasota firm of Lobeck and Hanson on behalf of the Winding Oaks residents at the Planning and Zoning Board’s May 17 meeting.

“Our members do have concerns about the proposed development and would like to be heard at the public hearing, and so we’re requesting that since they were not notified in an appropriate way and had no opportunity to be heard that the public hearing be reopened before the process goes any further,’’ Willner told P&Z board members at the May 17 meeting.

Representatives of the Longboat Key Club did not immediately return a request for comment.

Police underline road safety for Independence Day Longboat Key is gearing up for an eventful Fourth of July celebration, and Police Chief George Turner wants to make sure that revelers are safe behind the wheel.

Police will have extra staff working over the holiday, as will the Fire Department and Public Works. The main concern for Longboat Key is the traffic, said Turner, and the police will attempt to give drivers the most current information possible.

“We’re trying to put a few extra marine patrol and Greer Island beach patrol people out,” said Turner. “We’ll put up our signs on each

end of the island, letting visitors that come in know if there’s any parking at the end of the beach access. We want to make sure that people aren’t out just riding around hunting. If there’s no places left, we’ll make sure they know that.”

He also said that recently Longboat Key has had problems with golf carts clogging up traffic, and he underlined that golf carts are not allowed on Gulf of Mexico Drive or anywhere where the speed limit is 35 mph or higher.

“We encourage everyone to enjoy the holiday. Be safe,” said Turner. “Don’t drink and drive.

Don’t park on private property.

Don’t park on the right of ways. If the parking lots are full, the parking lots are full. Look over in the Coquina Beach area. They have a lot more parking than we do, but with construction, it’s going to limit the amount of cars able to park safely.”

Turner said that the main XFactor for the holiday will undoubtedly be the weather, but Longboat Key will have a lot of public-sector employees on call no matter the forecast.

“We’re pretty set looking forward to a nice, safe holiday weekend for everyone,” he said. “It’s always busy. But it will depend on the weather. If it’s a beautiful, sunny, warm beach day, it’s going to be extremely busy out on the water with boats and beach visitors. If the weather does not cooperate, we will still have our personnel out.

“Public Works will be out to make sure the areas are kept clean and orderly for the visitors.”

aid parking programs at St. Armands Circle are paying dividends not only for the city of Sarasota but also for merchants in the St. Armands Business Improvement District.

City Parking Manager Mark Lyons told the St. Armands BID board of directors on June 7 that on-street metered parking and the 484-space, 3-year-old parking deck at Madison Drive and North Adams Drive not only performed well during season but also outpaced expectations in May. This was true despite the ridership of the 4-month-old Bay Runner trolley service between downtown and Lido Key, which brought visitors to the circle with no need to park.

“The on-street meter activity was still very, very strong,” Lyons said.

“The garage took a slight dip, which is interesting because the garages in downtown took an even larger dip. I don’t know what caused that. I think May last year might have been sort of a coming-out month after COVID, when there was, as you might remember, a lot of activity.”

Lyons credited the success of paid street parking to growing use of the city’s ParkMobile system, which allows drivers to avoid using parking meters by entering the parking zone number into a cellphone app.

The BID derives no revenue from paid parking, but its merchants reap the benefits of more available and convenient parking, even if for a cost. And that cost is low compared to other tourist destinations, Lyons said. The first two hours in the park-

Paid parking at St. Armands generated $131,528 in May, down 21% from $165,824 in April. In May 2021, parking there netted $96,069.

The deck cost $15 million to build, paid for in part by St. Armands commercial property owners who agreed to partner with the city by paying additional taxes for the facility. That also means the property owners are on the hook, in part, to pay off bonds sold to build the garage.

“I know we have spoken before and there’s a good chance (parking operations) will be in the black,” BID Chair Gregory Leonard said to Lyons.

“I hate to put you on the spot, but we’re talking maybe $100,000 to $200,000?”

Lyons concurred, adding, “We still have a couple of good months in front of us with the boat races and various activities out at circle, which I think will cause some bumps in activity and revenues. It’s not too hard to imagine that we’re going to be in good shape.”

As for the Bay Runner, Lyons said ridership remains high even after season. In all, there have been 41,094 rides through May, with 14,267 in March and 14,291 in April.

“In May, we went down to 12,536,” Lyons said. “That’s only a 14% drop after season, which I find to be really astonishing. I thought it would be much higher. The ridership on on the Bay Runner has been impressive, to say the least.”

Per agreement with the city and the Florida Department of Transportation — all partners in the Bay Runner — the St Armands BID has allocated $50,000 of its projected $352,000 fiscal year 2023 budget to the trolley program.

Landmark price for Longboat home

An extensively remodeled home on Longboat Key showed the continuing trend of escalating prices.

recent home sale marks another landmark for property sales on Longboat Key. It is the highest sale on the Key in 2022 and the second-highest in the past 10 years, according to Multiple Listing Service data.

The property, located at 3303 Gulf of Mexico Drive, was purchased for $13.75 million by Tamara MacCormack, trustee of the MacCormack Florida Property Trust, of Ontario, Canada, in an off-the-market sale.

The sellers were Donald and Dawn Meagher.

Since 2010, 24 homes have sold for more than $10 million in Sarasota and Manatee counties, according to MLS data. Eighteen of those 24 sales have occurred since 2020, including six homes on Longboat Key. Among Longboat sales, the $13.75 million price for 3303 Gulf of Mexico Drive is second only to a home at 845 Longboat Club Road that sold for $16.5 million in November 2020.

The 3303 Gulf of Mexico Drive property had previously been sold in 2016 for $2,758,000, but the home was extensively remodeled by luxury builder Mason Martin since then.

Roger Pettingell, the Coldwell Banker agent who sold the property to the previous buyer, said that he doesn’t know the new owner’s plans for the home, but he would expect them to move in as it is.

“What was there before was a 5,900-square-foot, gulf-front house that needed to be completely redone,” he said. “I know they did a spectacular renovation. So I can’t imagine that it’s going to be redeveloped. This is a beautiful piece of beachfront property.”

and has five bedrooms and six bathrooms, and it includes luxury amenities such as a heated pool, a spa, an elevator and a three-car garage.

The home has 100 feet of beach footage and over 100 feet of beach depth, and Pettingell said that the price it commanded is a sign of the times for the Sarasota market.

“It’s a very large sale for us on Longboat Key gulf-front,” said Pettingell of the $13.75 million purchase price. “I feel like what it says about the market is that we’re just coming up to where we should be. If you looked at a house like that in Naples, it would be over $20 million.”

Mason Martin, the developer behind the property, is also extensively remodeling a home at 5861 Gulf of Mexico Drive. That home is listed at $17.9 million. Reid Murphy, the selling agent attached to the 5861 Gulf of Mexico Drive property, said the buyer for 3303 Gulf of Mexico Drive knew about the 5861 home but wanted something that had been completed.

Pettingell said he did not know much about the particulars of the recent sale of 3303 Gulf of Mexico Drive, but said it’s a sign Sarasota is catching up with Naples.

“We’ve matured and now we’re a substantial gulf-front community that is getting the prices we deserve,” he said. “And I don’t think we’ve seen the limit.”

The home at 3303 Gulf of Mexico Drive is the highest sale of the year at $13.75 million.

ecognizing a significant shortcoming in the Florida Retirement System’s Investment Plan, the state Legislature recently took substantial action to address the problem by passing House Bill 5007, which was signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis last week.

It is generally recognized that a defined contribution structured retirement plan needs a contribution rate of between 12% and 15% of a worker’s salary (where employees participate in Social Security) to produce an income that is likely to maintain the employee’s standard of living once they are in retirement. For teachers and most other non-safety public workers

in Florida, the contribution rate in the Florida Retirement System’s Investment Plan has been 3% by the employees and 3.3% by the employer, for a total of 6.3%. Unfortunately, this is effectively half of the total contribution necessary to effectively fund an appropriate retirement income.

In House Bill 5007, the Florida Legislature increased the state’s contribution to the FRS IP by 3% to a total employer contribution of 6.3%. This brings the contribution rate of government employers, i.e. taxpayers, to 6.3% and the total contribution rate up to 9.3%, certainly a substantial improvement. The increase is expected to cost $249 million next year.

Ideally, workers would have also upped their contributions to FRIS IP, but the state Legislature is to be applauded for recognizing this shortcoming and for acting to improve lifetime financial security for state employees. This change might also aid in recruiting and retaining quality employees into state service as taxpayers put more money toward workers’ retirements and the plan better meets employees’ long-term needs.

The FRS IP has been a plan that effectively meets most other best practices for defined contribution

plan design. It provides a robust communication and education package for employees and has an appropriate investment menu that includes target-date funds for workers who might be less financially active or sophisticated.

There is also a broad selection of distribution options for employees to choose from, including lifetime income options. With all these positive design elements, the insufficient contribution rate has kept the plan from being a truly effective retirement vehicle. While the government’s 3% contribution increase goes a long way toward making the plan more effective, the total contribution rate remains insufficient.

The Florida Retirement System Investment Plan should now examine how it can increase the required employee contribution by 3% to 6%, so the total contribution rate would rise to 12.3%. Legislative action will likely be needed, but increasing the employee contributions would create no additional cost to the state’s taxpayers. This increased contribution from workers would bring the FRS IP contribution total from 9.3% to 12.3%, a rate just above recognized standards so that workers could then expect to have the appropriate amount of money set aside for retirement.

An employee contribution rate of 6% is quite comparable to other states with defined contribution retirement plans and could be an appropriate reciprocal response considering not only the state’s increase in its contribution but also the recent 5.4% across the board increase in salaries for all state

employees, with some workers also getting additional raises. If workers express concerns about increasing their contribution rate all at once, state policymakers could examine the possibility of implementing the 3% contribution increase gradually over several years. Again, this would likely need to be spelled out legislatively.

The momentum initiated by the important and laudable state action to increase the government’s contribution rate to the FRS IP should not be lost. But to be a truly effective retirement plan for state employees, and best aid employer workplace objectives, including recruitment and retention of employees, the total contribution rate still needs to rise into the accepted range of 12% to 15%.

With the passage of House Bill 5007, the Florida Retirement System’s Investment Plan is much closer to being a model of effective public retirement plan design.

Florida policymakers should now seize the opportunity to take the necessary step — increasing employee contributions to 6%, thereby having a total contribution rate into the plan of over 12%, putting the contribution rate in line with best practices.

The Legislature recently passed new rules to inspect condominiums. Here’s what they mean for owners.

ollowing the Florida legislative special session in late May held to address property insurance reform, lawmakers also approved legislation to address condominium safety.

The legislation, passed less than a year after the collapse of the 12-story Champlain Tower South in Surfside, is designed to put measures in place to prevent a repeat of that tragedy, which killed nearly 100 residents.

Among the measures approved are mandating inspections and installing stopgaps to prevent condo associations from having capital shortfalls to address needs.

The new regulations were approved after state lawmakers failed to pass any major reform on condominium safety earlier this year.

Prior to the new law passing, some local government officials began to look at passing their own safety measures, including Longboat Key, which has since held off in lieu of the new law.

The new regulations are focused on two areas: inspections and reserves.

On the former, one of the law’s main provisions requires that buildings more than three stories tall get milestone inspections.

These inspections are to be completed at specific periods in a building’s life. Most buildings will have to be inspected once the building reaches its 30th birthday, based on when it received its certificate of occupancy. For buildings within 3 miles of the coast, the inspection needs to be done at the 25th birthday. The inspections need to be completed by Dec. 31 of that year.

From then on, inspections have to occur every 10 years.

These structural inspections

won’t be cursory glances at a building. The new rules call for licensed architects or engineers to look at load-bearing walls and primary structural systems. The reason for the inspections is to verify the life, safety and adequacy of the structural components and determine how the general structural condition of the building affects the maintenance, repair or replacement of structural components.

The inspections will be done in two parts, with phase one calling for a visual examination of the major structural components of a building and an assessment of its conditions.

Phase two is not required if there aren’t signs of substantial deterioration during the first inspection. If there are, phase two calls for the person who did the inspection to submit a sealed inspection report with a summary of the findings and recommendations to the condominium or association board. Local officials with jurisdiction over the building must also get a copy of the report.

Repair work must start within a year of when local authorities receive a copy of the phase two inspection report.

The new measures go into effect Dec. 31, 2024. Buildings that qualify for the milestone inspections must have them completed by then.

The second part of the law is designed to assure associations have the financial capabilities to pay for repairs and maintenance.

The legislation requires associations and co-ops to have reserve funding in place to pay for issues affecting the structural integrity of a building and maintenance identified in a structural integrity reserve study. This is a state-mandated study that every building three stories or taller must complete every 10 years to create a financial plan for future repairs and maintenance.

The study of common areas has to state how much useful life remains and estimate the replacement cost or the deferred maintenance cost. Plus, it must come with a recommendation for the annual reserve amount.

House Bill 5D, passed during the recent insurance legislative special session, includes the following reforms to increase the safety of condominiums: n Requires inspections for all condominiums and cooperative buildings three stories or higher. For buildings within 3 miles of the coast, phase one inspections must occur 25 years after initial occupancy and every 10 years after. For all other buildings, phase one inspections must occur 30 years after initial occupancy and every 10 years after. n If a phase one inspection reveals substantial structural deterioration, a more intensive phase one inspection is required. n Requires condominiums and cooperatives to conduct structural integrity reserve studies for buildings three stories or higher, ensures that funding necessary for future structural repairs is available and prohibits a waiver of funding for certain structural reserves. n Increases transparency by requiring all structural inspections reports and reserve studies to be part of the associations’ official record and must be provided to potential purchasers of a unit.

The mandate that an association must have enough money in its reserves to cover repairs and deferred maintenance is what doomed an effort to pass these provisions during the regular legislative session in January.

Under the new rules, starting Dec. 31, 2024, associations must have reserves in place and those funds cannot be used for any other purpose.

MEET FLUTE Graeme Sugden attended these halls as a youngster, and now he’s playing them as a professional musician.

raeme Sugden eagerly walked through these halls as a youngster, absorbing every bit of tutelage that he could find.

But now he’s a flute fellow playing in the Sarasota Music Festival and a role model for local youngsters in his own right.

Sugden, a graduate student at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, grew up in Bradenton, and he graduated from Braden River High School. He received private instruction from Sarasota Orchestra Principal Flute Betsy Hudson Traba in his musical journey, and now she’s in the audience watching him perform.

For Sugden — and for the 60 fellows selected to participate in the festival — it’s a large milestone in their lives and a chance to begin contemplating their future as professionals.

“I came to this building with Sarasota Youth Orchestra for five years, and it’s very special just walking around the hallways now as an adult,” says Sugden. “I’m getting to perform in the same halls that I played in as a young musician, coming back as a completely different person and getting to see the faculty that are the staff I worked with when I was a kid.”

In some ways, he’s been preparing for this moment for all of his life. Sugden played for the Sarasota Youth Symphony and the Sarasota Youth Philharmonic during his teen years, and he graduated from a dualenrollment program with Braden

The Sarasota Music Festival brings early career professionals and accomplished virtuosos for a slate of 14 local performances.

Now, a few years later, he’s performing in a festival that’s a jewel of the summer schedule.

The Sarasota Music Festival was founded in 1965 by Paul Wolfe, and he served as its director for 42 years.

Robert Levin took over the reigns from 2007 to 2016, and Jeffrey Kahane took over from there. The festival will present 14 different programs with music ranging from the Baroque period to contemporary, and it will feature virtuosos from all over the country.

Sugden’s college professor at IU, Thomas Robertello, will be one of 40 faculty artists from top music schools to feature in Sarasota. Sugden says that it’s an honor to learn from the faculty and to rub elbows with his fellow peers.

“It’s kind of a gathering of all the different schools, with all of our faculty coming from all around the country,” he said. “We get a lot of different perspectives on the music.

It’s really cool in my ensemble as well because our coach is actually performing with us. Not only do we get to hear his instruction on the piece, but we get to hear his playing, his interpretation.”

Sugden will perform in a number of performances. His first performance, on the opening night of the festival, came as a member of a wind quintet. He will also play as part of Rising Stars 2, a performance just for the fellows, on June 19.

The flutist will also be part of the third festival Friday, where he’ll play on Dixtuor by Francaix.

The cool part, for Sugden, will be that his parents will be able to be in attendance. He jokes that they already hear him practice, but now they’ll be able to see him perform.

Sugden has had the opportunity to study with Carol Wincenc, a professor at Juilliard, during the festival, and he practiced and performed with faculty member Peter Kolkay in the first Friday event. But Sugden says that Traba has made the largest impact on his life.

She first started working with Sugden when he was in high school, and she’s continued mentoring him since

then. Sugden says he did not really aspire to be a professional musician until he started working with Traba, and now she gets to see his hard work pay off in person; Traba attended one of of his early master classes at the festival.

“I owe everything to Betsy,” he says. “I would not be the flutist I am today without her, and she completely changed my playing for the better. She really showed me what control on the flute is like and she was the person who helped starting me build a really beautiful sound and solid technique. She really started shaping me into an employed musician.

“She is a fantastic flute player and she’s such a kind teacher. She’s always been a wonderful mentor to me.”

That’s part of the magic of the festival; it’s young and hungry upand-coming musicians working with professionals who have already blazed their own trail. All of the fellows are taking the same journey from student to professional musician, and it’s inspiring for them to be able to meet each other and play together.

The reality for them is that they’re uncertain where their career journeys will take them. When they meet their peers, they’re meeting a mirror image; nobody can better empathize with the position they’re in than their fellow musicians.

“It’s a large festival, but it’s not as large as some of the other festivals where it feels like you’re kind of overwhelmed,” says Sugden. “It’s much more intimate. You’re allowed to get to know people a little bit better. It’s really great to meet people from other schools, other parts of the country. People who may study

with teachers that you may know or that you have mutual friends with so it’s really great to kind of start networking in that way. You never know when you’re going to need to crash on someone’s couch. Or if you’re visiting a city and you have a friend that lives there, it’s really wonderful.”

The festival has always been one of Sugden’s ambitions, he says, because of growing up so close to it. And he feels that it’s worth applying to even if you have to do it multiple times.

But interestingly, it wasn’t at the forefront of his mind during the application process.

Sugden, who was recently hired by the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, said that he applied for the festival right when he was in the midst of applying to graduate schools.

addition to other orchestral pieces, in February. A month later, when he was auditioning for the Manhattan School of Music, Sugden got the news that he was selected to perform in the festival.

That left him plenty of time to not only choose grad school, but to embark on his studies and also to prepare the base of knowledge he’d need for his festival performances.

Now, he’s a graduate student, a professional musician and a festival fellow all at the same time.

“The festival is a really great introduction into the professionalism of being a musician and the rehearsal schedule and working with peers,” he says. “It’s so well organized. We had all of our assignments weeks before the festival started so we could start working on them. We knew what we were playing for our master classes and what our chamber assignments

were. We were able to put it together.

We’re just rehearsing.”

Is there a performance that he’s most looking forward to?

Sugden says that it’s wonderful to be able to have time with the faculty members and to perform with them, but he’s really anticipating the final performance, when he’ll play on Dixtuor by Francaix.

“It’s a very unique ensemble,” he says of the June 24 event. “I believe it’s 10 players, and it’s kind of a wind quintet and a string quartet mixed together. It’s a really beautiful piece.

It’s not an instrumentation you see very often. And it’s definitely an ensemble that I’ve never played in like that. I’m interested to see how the chamber music works in that kind of setting and how I can fit the sound of the flute into the strings and the other wind instruments.”

confess: I’m the one who burnt the bread during a recent Publix cooking class.

But in my defense, those two pieces weren’t charred beyond recognition.

They were lovingly blackened.

This reporter, an amateur in the kitchen, recently had the bright idea of enrolling in a cooking class and getting his hands dirty.

I contacted Publix about the possibility of attending its grilling course and told them I was a beginning chef, and they said each of their hands-on courses were suitable for newbies.

I showed up at the Publix location on University Parkway after a

long work day, and Senior Managing Chef Jim Hendry greeted me and the rest of the class.

He sat us down and gave us an overview of what we’d be doing that day, introduced us to his colleague Chef Michael McClure and

then immediately deputized us as apprentice sous chefs.

The hands-on courses are limited to 12 people, which means that not everybody will get a turn at the grill. But chefs Hendry and McClure took turns running us through the prep work and the actual placing of food on flame.

Hendry told everybody to be careful with the knives and showed us where we would be taking dirty dishes when we were through with them. And then he gave us a talk about tasting things.

“We’re going to be using some tasting spoons; we’ll have some tasting opportunities along the way,” said Hendry. “There’s two rules with the tasting spoons.

They’re single-use; no doubledipping. And then they go directly into the garbage can.”

With that tasting decorum tip out of the way, we started to assume our work stations. The kitchen was oriented to both Hendry and McClure; we would begin preparing one dish on one side of the kitchen, then we’d move to hear the other chef’s instructions and began preparing a great many dishes with

a great many ingredients.

Mostly, that meant the lesssexy work of preparing marinades.

We stripped parsley and chopped garlic for the olive tapenade, and we combined anchovies, arugula, cheese and vinegar for a chicken marinade. We chopped onions and garlic for a fish marinade, and we prepared a cheesy gorgonzola mushroom topping for our steaks.

McClure, preparing the steaks, gave us instructions for how to cook them perfectly at home using a meat thermometer.

“Sometimes, you touch a steak and you don’t really know what’s going on in the middle,” he said.

“This is your key, guys: cooking it to temperature.

“It’s 100 or 125 degrees for medium rare, bring it up to 135 or 140 degrees for medium.”

McClure cautioned that it isn’t an exact science and said one of the most-important parts of cooking a steak is removing it from the heat source. You want to sear it, but you also want to let it rest.

“Always let your meat rest before you slice it because that’s going to keep all the juices from just pouring

right out,” he said. “Then you wind up with a big pool on your cutting board, and your meat’s dry.

“When you let it rest, it often comes up five to 10 degrees. If you are going for a specific temperature, remember, it’s going to still cook while it’s resting.”

We had time not only to taste the things we had just made, but also to move back to the next cooking station. The steak was resting while we worked on the fish, and Hendry gave a demonstration on how to cut the fish. Earlier, he had shown us how to properly chop vegetables by gripping the bottom of the knife securely and letting the heel do most of the work.

Time on the grill was a coveted resource; one of my classmates got to grill the steaks, and another classmate was assigned the task of grilling the chicken. Yet another classmate would handle the fish, and one got to grill halloumi cheese.

But who did they tap to grill the bread for our avocado toast?

But that would be a lie.

Armed with tongs, I spread the toast out over the grilling surface.

The grill could fit about a dozen of them. And then I started waiting. I investigated whether the pieces on the edges of the grill had cooked.

And they hadn’t.

Then I looked at the pieces on the grill’s hot spot. Holy cow!

That side was already charred!

That happened twice, and we threw away both burnt pieces.

But then I got the rhythm.

I had some other brief coordination problems on the grill; I dropped one perfectly cooked piece of toast onto a vacant burner by accident and fished it out.

By the time I had cooked all of the toast for our dish, my classmates were giving me side-eye.

But they gleefully cheered when I served the last piece of toast and surrendered the tongs.

I considered that a victory.

Soon, we were sitting down and sampling all that we had made.

It was a full meal with grilled chicken and truffle-accented pasta, herb-marinated grilled fish, a perfect grilled ribeye steak and grilled cheese avocado toast.

We knew exactly what went into cooking it because we had done it with our own hands. We walked into Publix as strangers, but we left with a full belly, a doggy bag and most importantly, a sense of fulfillment.

n May 6, the Beach Harbor Club welcomed its first baby. The condominium complex was built in 1970 and was a 55 and older community up until the ’90s.

There are original owners residing in the same units; condominiums have been passed down to the next generation, but no one can remem-

ber another newborn. The complex is abuzz that Blair Marie Sobotka is the first.

Proud parents, David and Brianna Sobotka, said word of the new baby spread quickly. They started receiving gifts and now plan ahead when walking to the beach because they’re stopped so often by friendly neighbors wanting to introduce themselves to Blair.

“Everyone’s really excited that it’s the first baby born here. They’re all excited to have a baby here. We’ve felt so much love from the community. It’s been great,” David said.

Residents are excited to have a new addition. “It’s thrilling to have a new baby, and she’s just so cute,” Ladzinski said.

Both David and Brianna are firsttime parents. Brianna works in commercial real estate for Ian Black Real

Estate in downtown Sarasota, and David is a management consultant.

He works remotely from their condo and says fatherhood instantly became more important than his career.

Brianna started visiting Longboat Key when she was only 2 months old.

Her memories of the island include family vacations at the Colony Beach and Tennis Resort over Easter breaks and attending summer camp at Bayfront Park.

Because of those early camp days, this is not her first appearance in this newspaper. She remembers the Longboat Observer printing several articles about the camp back then.

“When we were kids, there were way more kids on Longboat,” she said. “Bayfront Park would have Easter egg hunts every Easter, and there were probably hundreds of kids running around, so it’s changed. But I think it’s changing back in a more positive way right now.”

Brianna’s grandparents became snowbirds and bought a condo in the Beach Harbor Club in 1989. Now, her parents own that unit. “It’s just been a kind of special home away from home my entire life,” she said.

One of the first trips David and Brianna took together was to Longboat Key. David fell in love with the island the same way his wife had years before. Both share a love for swimming, boating, scuba diving and fishing.

They call their move a permanent vacation and hope Blair will come to love the water as much as they do.

Either way, the couple couldn’t be happier in their new home with their new baby.

“It’s the best gift I’ve ever been given. It’s the best job or responsibility I’ve ever had, and she makes it easy. She’s adorable and perfect and a little peanut,” the new dad gushed.

quickly. I no longer am trying to work 80-hour weeks. I want to go into dad-mode and be able to come out and take care of her when I get out of work,” he said. “At one point in time, I really wanted to climb the corporate ladder, be CEO, run the world, but that’s changed. I no longer need that.”

Asked about his Father’s Day plans, David joked that it was too far out to say because they’re just trying to get through the next five hours after so many sleepless nights. They want to take Blair on her first boat ride, even if they only anchor 10 feet away from the dock. David is already dreaming of the day she hooks her first snook.

The couple met in New York and planned to marry at the Longboat Key Club, but COVID delayed their plans four times before they gave up and held a small ceremony in New York City. They were ready to start a family.

The pair can already finish each other’s sentences. After David said, “We escaped in March 2020 with a carry-on suitcase,” they happily said in unison, “And we never looked back.”

At the time, New York had begun closing the bridges and tunnels in and out of Manhattan due to COVID, and it was still unclear what would come next. The 10-day getaway they planned to Brianna’s parents’ condo turned into a permanent move. Last June, they bought a fourth-floor, bayfront unit at the Beach Harbor

LBK’S 1% Meet Penelope Hagen. She’s 7 years old, loves wearing a mermaid tail and is part of the 1% living on Longboat Key. In January 2021, the Longboat Observer reported there were 70 children living on the island who were enrolled in public school.

That number doesn’t account for private school enrollments or homeschooled students but offers a good estimate.

According to the 2020 U.S. census, Longboat Key’s total population is 7,592, making school-aged children the 1%. Nationally, children account for almost a quarter of the population, so it’s not as easy to make friends on Longboat Key as it is in Lakewood Ranch.

“I make a friend; then they leave the next day,” Penelope said in a slightly exasperated tone. Nevertheless, she loves island life and met 12 other kids when she started riding the school bus last year.

Asked if she has any grown-up friends, Penelope said what a true Longboater of any age would say: “I have pickleball friends.”

Being a kid on Longboat may not come with a lot of peers, but it comes with perks beyond the beach. Karen Pasnkow is one of several neighbors who wishes her grandchildren lived closer. Penelope’s mom, Rachel Hagen, said Pasnkow brings Penelope gifts and goodies for every birthday and holiday.

“Dolphins come around here, so look out for dolphins and manatees,” she said. Another great tip from Penelope: If you touch a sea urchin between the spikes, it will hug you.

After 20 hours and one month’s time, 7,000 bottle caps were collected. In disbelief, Chipman wanted to do it again. Expecting and hoping the number would plummet, it did not.

About 5,000 bottle caps per month are collected in the parking lot alone.

Brenda Canales, the volunteer coordinator for Sarasota County, thanked the volunteers. “The government values the volunteer hour at $29.95. You can see the impact, even for just one hour, a group this size makes.”

Ann Walborn spoke on behalf of Mote Marine and those who can’t speak for themselves: “You are also here helping turtles.”

Walborn said only one in 1,000 turtles will reach maturity and return to lay eggs 22 years later. A baby is the size of a 50-cent piece when born. Removing debris from the water and shoreline is essential to their well-being.

Bottles, cans, clothing and shoes were all bagged and weighed. A broken beach chair was added to the pile too. Brooke Mailloux said she picked up a lot of yellow Capri Sun straws.

This was the first beach cleanup organized by the Women’s Council, whose goal is to raise $20,000 for Mote Marine this year and to make the beach cleanup an annual event.

“I’m born and raised here, so the water and the beaches are really important to me,” 2022 Council President Julianna Burns said.

Meagan West Jones weighed the trash, and Roxanne Carroll recorded the weights.

Tag along with the sea turtle patrol The Longboat Key Turtle Watch hosts turtle walks every Saturday in June and July.

L

ongboat Key Turtle Watch is inviting the public to tag along on its turtle patrols again. During COVID-19 shutdowns, the walks were limited to small, private groups. This year, all are welcome as long as you can get up early and walk a mile in sand.

The walks start at 6:45 a.m. every Saturday in June and July, rain or shine. Lightning is the only weather condition to stop a turtle patrol.

“Volunteers will walk in pouring down rain, but we don’t expect them to,” said Connie Schindewolf, who patrols regularly. “We’ve had as few as zero people on a rainy day and as many as 105.”

There’s no guarantee, but this is an active time of year for sea turtles. Sea turtle nesting season runs from May 1 to Oct. 31 each year, but the most nests are laid in the first few months.

“It’s likely they’ll get to see what we do with a nest until mid-July before they start tapering off,” Schindewolf said. “But then you might see what we do with a hatch.”

There’s also a chance to see an excavation. Excavations take place three days after a hatch. Volunteers dig down to find the egg shells, but sometimes they find whole eggs and live turtles that didn’t make it out of the nest.

If a live turtle is found, timing is key. If it’s after 9 a.m. they have to keep the babies because the birds are too active and hungry. They’ll be released at a better time.

Volunteers bring props and pictures with them, but they cannot and will not promise you’ll see anything.

They promise you’ll learn more about sea turtles.

Longboat Key Turtle Watch operates under Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium’s turtle permit.

Volunteers are trained extensively before the start of the season. There will be five guides leading groups and answering questions.

There is no registration or fee for the walks. Show up at 6:45 a.m. to the public beach access at 4795 Gulf of Mexico Drive, and you’re on turtle patrol.
