Bullock, who began his tenure in October 2011, expressed gratitude to the commissioners, town staff and residents he has worked with during his five-and-a-half years on the job. The 66-year-old said Longboat Key is composed of “incredible people who really passionately care about their community,” and spending the end of his career on the Key has been his “privilege.”

“I couldn’t possibly have spent it in a better place,” Bullock said.

When Bullock started the job, replacing former Town Manager Bruce St. Denis, he gave commissioners a five-year commitment.

When he retires, he will have put in more than six years of service on the Key. As town manager, Bullock has overseen projects that will have lasting effects for the Key: n In 2015, Key voters approved a plan to bury utilities, such as power lines and wireless communication gear. The project is intended to enhance the community’s safety, appearance and protection from storm-related outages and recovery from damage. The town expects to begin construction next year. n In 2016, the town began

redeveloping Bayfront Park. New amenities include a dog park, basketball court and observation deck. Town staff expects to have most most of the $3.5 million project finished in June. n The town is in the beginning stages of constructing the Center for Arts, Culture and Education, a joint project between the town, Ringling College and the Longboat Key Foundation. Located at the Town Center on Bay Isles

Road, the facility is expected to house art classes and a 200- to 300-seat black box theater. n The town constructed two sand-preserving structures called groins near North Shore Road in 2015 to address erosion.

ock’s resignation, while Mayor Terry Gans called the announcement “bittersweet.”

“I’m sorry to hear it,” Gans told Bullock. “But I’m glad for you.”

Commissioners will decide the hiring process to find Bullock’s replacement, a process that has not yet begun.

Before taking the job on the Key, Bullock had been a deputy county administrator of Sarasota County for 14 years. Prior to that, Bullock owned his own construction and logging company. He also spent eight years as a management consultant.

Bullock was raised in Berwyn, Pa. He attended West Chester University in West Chester, Pa., where he majored in history.

The announcement comes less than two months after Public Works Director Juan Florensa announced his own retirement, which will also happen in January.

ayfront Park’s new look is a hit with pretty much everyone who offers an opinion, the town’s parks chief says.

“It looks like a real park now,” said Mark Richardson, Longboat Key’s Streets, Facilities, Parks and Recreation manager.

Construction on the $3.5 million project began in June 2016, and Richardson hopes everything on the bayside of the park will be finished in June.

All of the park’s outdoor courts, including tennis, pickleball and basketball, are now open. Richardson said the town is still putting finishing touches on the dog park, pavilions and amenities such as water fountains.

Electrical work also needs to be completed, Richardson said.

“It’s going to be a real jewel,’’ said Gail Loefgren, president of the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce said at a recent Town Commission workshop.

FDOT is involved because the beach access will include a ramp for construction vehicles, Richardson said.

The town began the permit process for the gulfside changes last year, and Richardson hopes to receive the permit and begin construction as soon as possible.

Richardson noted that the bayside of the park won’t be complete until the gulfside is finished because construction vehicles for the gulfside will need to park in an area on the bayside.

Richardson expects the proj-

ect to remain under the town’s budget of $3.5 million. Of that amount, $2 million came from the Sarasota County and $1.02 million came from the town.

The town is also seeking a vendor for non-motorized watercraft, like kayaks and paddleboards, for the park.

Purchasing Manager Kari Kennedy said two vendors have put in bids for the spot: Island Style Watersports and Happy Paddler Kayak Tours & EcoVentures.

“I think both vendors are great candidates,” Kennedy said.

On May 8, Kennedy said a committee of five people will choose the vendor to be considered by Town Manager Dave Bullock.

Richardson hopes to have a vendor in place for the official opening of the park.

Before construction at Bayfront Park began, former Garden Club President Madelyn Spoll was vocal about the town breaking ground on the project. So far, she’s happy with what she sees.

“I think it’s going to be a wonderful asset,” Spoll said. “Now if we could just get a building to go with it.”

Spoll is referring to the Bayfront Park Recreation Center.

Commissioner Jim Brown has been advocating to replace the 1,300-square-foot building since the early 2000s. Murray “Murf” Klauber donated the building to the town in the early 1980s, when it was moved to the park from the former Far Horizons resort. “(Bayfront Park) is not complete until we get a new rec center, in my mind,” Brown said. “People stop me at Publix all the time to ask about it.”

Brown noted that it has been difficult to draw attention to the park’s recreation center when there is so much public interest in the upcoming Longboat Key Center for the Arts, Culture and Education, which is in the beginning phases of development.

Otherwise, Brown said he’s happy with the changes, and he hopes to try out pickleball at the park when he finds some time between commission meetings.

Mayor Terry Gans said he’s pleased the town chose to make the changes with an “appropriate timeline,” rather than as quickly as possible.

“I think it’s coming along beautifully,” Gans said.

“It’s something that the town and visitors are really going to enjoy.”

MARCH 2003 After a group of residents circulated a petition in support of a community center, the Longboat Key Town Commission voted to establish a citizens committee to explore the possibility of a Bayfront Park facility. The committee later recommended a $5.9 million community center with a new 19,500-square-foot building.

Election changes represented a lot of the “low-hanging fruit’’ that Longboat Key’s Charter Review Committee started picking last week as it began working through ideas that ultimately might go before voters next year.

The task facing the five-member group: Develop a list of changes to the town charter, which will be passed up to the Town Commission for ballot consideration.

Town Manager Dave Bullock said he hoped to have a ballot proposal ready by October in time for the March 2018 election.

It’s a process that takes place once every 10 years.

Charter Commission member Phill Younger suggested retooling how the Town Commission is set up, increasing the number of seats elected at-large and reducing the number of geographic districts. There are currently two at-large commissioners and five who represent districts.

“We often have uncontested races because we have very narrow districts,” Younger said, adding that each commissioner represents the entire town regardless of district.

In the most recent election, George Spoll was elected without a challenger, filling the District 2 seat left open by Jack Duncan, who was term-limited but resigned after surgery in late 2016.

Chairwoman Pat Zunz proposed adding a year to the terms of commissioners and reducing the term limit from three to two.

The commission also added to its list of recommendations a proposal to hold runoff elections in the event no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote. Currently, in a race involving more than two candidates, the winner is the candidate with the most votes.

Among the charter revisions suggested by the town staff: n Removing all references to setting Town Commission meetings at 7 p.m. n Removing the topic of permanent advisory boards — like the Planning and Zoning Board, Code Enforcement Board and Zoning Board of Adjustments — from the charter and including them in the town’s code of ordinances instead.

In addition to Zunz and Younger, who are both former town commissioners, the committee consists of Bill Cook, Alan Pryor and Ted Salisbury. Salisbury, a Canadian citizen, was not present last week and participated in the meeting by telephone. The committee started with seven appointed members, but Dave Brenner resigned and Randy Clair was chosen to fill an empty seat on the town commission.

The committee’s next meeting is planned for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 10, at Town Hall.

That’s when Chuck Whittall, president of Unicorp National Developments, says he intends to deliver a new proposal for the

former Colony Beach and Tennis Resort.

Number of units? Between 237 and 268, split between residential condos and tourism units. His initial proposal called for more than 400 units.

Layout? Less open space than originally proposed.

Maximum height? 65 feet over elevation. The initial proposal called for 12 stories, and Whittall previously said he wanted 80 feet over elevation.

“We’re still going to build an

exceptional resort,” Whittall said, adding his offer of between $130,000 and $200,000 for Colony unit owners will remain.

Whittall spoke Monday at the Town Commission meeting, at which discussion and an initial vote on an ordinance that includes height limits for new construction on Longboat Key were planned.

But commissioners held off, saying they needed more time to consider all the angles of a Planned Unit Development ordi-

nance, including building heights.

“I can’t do anything but think about this,” Commissioner Jim Brown, an architect, said. “I’m not sure we’re ready to move this forward. This has so many flaws in it.”

One of these flaws, Brown said, is the use of the term “PUD,” which he said will give future developers the wrong impression.

“We’re not flexible enough — and I don’t think we want to be flexible enough — to call these PUDs,” Brown said.

Commissioner Randy Clair said he thinks it would be beneficial for commissioners to examine the wants and needs of property owners before advancing.

“I’d like to have that type of input into our thinking as to whether or not we are addressing the issues that our property owners are concerned with,” Clair said.

Mayor Terry Gans summed up: “What I’m hearing is that the commission has more work to do,” Gans said. “We don’t have our arms around it yet.”

Still, Whittall said he is optimistic. “The reason I’m encouraged is now we have some direction.”

The ordinance , which will now be the focus of a single-topic workshop, includes proposed amendments to the town’s zoning code for planned-unit developments, or PUDs, which are designed to encourage redevelopment of properties through a voluntary zoning process. It’s designed as a means for developments that don’t comply with zoning rules to redevelop into compliance. Existing buildings that exceed the height limit would be allowed to remain as tall.

Planning and Zoning Board recommended allowing an 80-foot height limit for new buildings, as long as buildings were set back 2.5 times the height of the building from Gulf of Mexico Drive. In other words, an 80-foot building would have to be no closer than 200 feet from GMD. But at a workshop meeting in March, the Town Commission rejected the Planning and Zoning Board’s plan and returned to the town’s 65-foot benchmark.

At the beginning of the meeting, residents of Aquarius and TenCon, the two condominiums neighboring the Colony property, spoke in support of the 80-foot limit to allow Whittall to proceed.

June Haley of TenCon called the state of the Colony “an eyesore” and “an embarrassment.”

Haley urged commissioners to return to the Planning and Zoning Board-recommended 80-foot limit.

“If the commissioners do not reconsider, I dread the thought that we may be faced with many more years of this blight on our community,” Haley said.

Members of community groups like Keep Longboat Special and Preserve Longboat, meanwhile, urged the commission to maintain the 65-foot height limit.

Tom Meurer, vice president of Preserve Longboat, expressed the group’s familiar concerns, including building sizes and the potential traffic caused by Unicorp’s vision for the Colony property.

Meurer stressed that all members of his organization are permanent Key residents.

“We are not snowbirds. We are not renters,” Meurer said. “We are not hotel guests. We are not developers. We’re proud of that.”

For $2,099, chamber members can explore China on a nine-day excursion.

The Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce encourages visitors to explore the island and all it has to offer from the beaches to the restaurants.

Now, the chamber is encouraging its members to explore new territory.

In October, Chamber of Commerce members will have the opportunity to explore China on a nine-day excursion. The chamber is partnering with Citslinc International Inc. for an all-inclusive tour of Beijing, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Shanghai for $2,099 a person. Non-chamber members can go on the trip for an extra $100.

Chamber President Gail Loefgren went on the trip last year with the same company and said it was a wonderful experience.

“Because it’s so inexpensive, and China is such an interesting country, I thought it would be great to offer [it to] the chamber at this price,” she said.

There is no limit on how many people can go. The trip won’t just be made of chamber members,

though Longboat travelers will be grouped together.

On her trip, Loefgren visited the Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City along with gardens, embroidery, silk and pearl factories, and various other tourist spots.

“Well, I hope they get out of the trip what I got out of the trip, which is a new picture of the Chinese people,” she said. “I think the Chinese people are wonderful, and they love Americans. So you come back with this feeling that if the governments could just get along, the world would be a much better place because the people like each other.”

The $2,099 includes roundtrip airfare from John F. Kennedy International Airport, four- and five-star hotel accommodations, three meals a day, all tour fees, in-country ground transportation and local airfare, Englishspeaking guides, all taxes and airport fees and entrance fees for attractions.

The prices are based on twoperson shared accommodations, but single occupancy is available for an additional $500. Travelers can also attend a side trip to Xi’an, site of the Terra Cotta Warriors, for an additional $200.

Tale of two tax cuts When Trump’s opponents rant about tax cuts being for the wealthy, it’s a fake argument.

Meanwhile, raising Florida’s homestead exemption has consequences lawmakers ignore.

N

ormally, count us all in when the subject of cutting taxes arises.

It’s a no-brainer when anyone in Washington proposes cutting federal tax rates — be it the personal income tax rate, payroll tax rate, estate tax rate, corporate income tax rate, dividend tax rate or capital gains tax rate.

Cut them all!

We would take anything that would allow Americans to keep more of what is theirs and what they earned, rather than have it confiscated and sent into the federal abyss.

But at the same time, we’re not all in on a proposed Florida constitutional amendment that would cut property taxes for homesteaded property owners by raising Florida’s homestead exemption from $50,000 to $75,000.

Let’s talk taxes.

WHINERS DON’T GET IT

Take the Trump plan. It would: n Double the standard deduction to $12,600 and $24,000, respectively for single and married filers. n Reduce from seven to three the personal income tax brackets and lower the top tax to 35% from 39%. n Lower the corporate income tax and the pass-through tax for Sub chapter S corporations, limited liability companies and partnerships from 35% to 15%. n Eliminate the estate tax.

Anything that leaves more of your money in your hands, rather than in the grubby hands of Congress, will boost economic growth. That’s what has occurred historically every time Congress has cut tax rates.

Of course, the other side of this coin is spending. The Trump administration wants to increase federal spending — $1 billion more on infrastructure and $54 billion more on defense — but it hasn’t articulated from where the money will come to pay for it. Remember: He was the one who incessantly lamented how the federal debt has grown to $20 trillion.

To be sure, the economy will grow faster with his plan, increasing the federal government’s tax revenues above what they are now. But that growth won’t be fast enough to cover the increased spending.

That’s always the problem. When Ronald Reagan pushed through his ’82 and ’86 tax cuts, Congress did nothing to cut spending. Boom: Deficits spiked. Same under Bush II. Trump needs to spell out how he’s going to drain the Washington spending swamp.

But don’t expect that to happen. No one in D.C. — neither Republicans nor Democrats — has the political will to cut spending at levels that make a difference. Want proof? The Obamacare fiasco.

Instead, whiner-in-chief Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer prefers the standard, tattered trope: that the Trump tax cuts are nothing more than gifts to the rich — at the expense of the middle class.

For starters, someone please explain the moral justification for a tax system that confiscates 39% of one person’s income versus only 25% of someone else’s income. Just because he has more and is more successful? Punish success? That’s what we do.

Where are the flat-tax tea partyers now?

But here is another fact that Schumer and his fellow confiscators never acknowledge or admit: Even if the corporate tax rate, top personal income tax rate and estate tax rate are cut, leaving more (of their) money in the hands of the wealthy, those cuts will help the lower and middle class.

Wealthy people don’t put their money under a mattress. They spend and invest it, which creates jobs and ultimately increases the wealth and well-being of the lower and middle classes.

Imagine the small business owner who sees an opportunity to grow her business. But she’s cash poor and shuns bank debt. She also is taxed at the 39% personal tax rate because her company produces profits of $500,000 a year.

Her tax: $195,000.

Say her tax rate drops to 15%, or $75,000, a savings of $125,000.

What would that entrepreneur do with that extra $125,000?

Invest it to create more wealth — and more jobs.

But Chuck Schumer never sees it that way. He doesn’t understand how economics, entrepreneurism and capitalism work.

LAWMAKERS’ MEDDLING

After Longboat Key Mayor Terry Gans heard Florida Speaker Richard Corcoran speak in Sarasota before this year’s legislative session began, he remarked that the impression Corcoran left was that municipalities were lucky to be able to exist and should be grateful to the Legislature.

Another way to put it, and it certainly appears this way: Lawmakers often have disdain for county and municipal governments — especially the idea of home rule.

Two instances: 1) The Legislature’s continued meddling in counties and municipalities’ regulation of vacation rentals; and 2) Putting on the state ballot a constitutional amendment proposing to raise the homestead exemption from $50,000 to $75,000.

On the surface, if you’re a homesteaded property owner, your inclination is to say “yes” — raise the exemption, because it would lower your annual property taxes. It’s instinct: Of course, you want to pay less in taxes.

And while that is always our inclination, there are some particular consequences to this that are likely to have adverse effects on the quality of life in your city, county, perhaps even your neighborhood.

Whenever the amount exempted from your property taxes is increased, there is a corresponding reduction in your city and county’s general revenues. This is the primary source of revenue that pays for everything your local government does — police and fire protection, street and sewer maintenance, water, parks, public employees, you name it.

To be sure, we all believe every government entity can be more efficient.

But talk to any mayor, city manager or county commissioner in Florida, and they all will tell you one of the most pressing challenges they face is delivering the services taxpayers expect with the revenue sources in their control.

Everything is a tradeoff. Nothing is free. If local taxpayers want more, someone must pay. And the choices to pay are limited: raising your propertytax millage rate; increasing (within state limits) your city or county’s sales tax, a portion of which always goes to the state; increasing fees for services.

But when the Legislature orchestrates an increase in the homestead exemption, essentially you have state lawmakers telling city and county governments: “We’ve decided you’re operating inefficiently, so we’re going to cut your tax revenue.”

Longboat Key Town Manager David Bullock announced Monday he plans to retire in January. That comes on the heels of longtime Public Works Director Juan Florensa announcing earlier in the year his plans to retire in January as well.

No one is irreplaceable. But Bullock and Florensa surely must go down in Longboat Key history as two of the town’s most effective and competent administrators.

Florensa has provided a steady hand and solid leadership for nearly 17 years, guiding the town through an update of worn-out pipes and sewers with unflappable patience and good cheer. He has always been willing to help — no matter the project (Freedom Fests, Gourmet Luncheons, you name it).

Bullock brought a calming and efficient hand to the town when he became town manager in 2011 after a tumultuous period at Town Hall.

Hopefully, the Town Commission has one more important job for each: To help find and train their clones.

tion time they voted to reduce your taxes. They benefit, while everyone else — local governments and local taxpayers — suffer the consequences.

What’s more, the ill consequences of increasing the homestead exemption are compounded. As the late Milton Friedman often said about taxation and subsidies: What you give to one, you must take from another.

Pure and simple, the homestead exemption is a subsidy to year-round homeowners. What you give to them in lower taxes means local governments must take more from someone else. In fact, that exists today: The homestead exemption means that every second-home owner and every commercial building owner (office, warehouse, rental apartments) is paying more than he otherwise would to subsidize full-time resident homeowners.

How fair is this: A part-time resident homeowner pays more for local police and fire services than does a year-round resident homeowner?

When the $75,000 homestead exemption question shows up on the 2018 statewide ballot, you can bet the city and county elected officials will be advocating against it, sounding like they’re progressive tax and spenders.

At the same time, many voters will be oblivious to the consequences — other than paying lower property taxes.

If state lawmakers want to be taxcutting heroes, they might try focusing on their own sandbox. Over the past three years, Florida’s budget has risen from $80 billion to $83 billion.

You know there is excess spending in there.

I was stunned and disappointed by your editorial of April 13, 2017, upbraiding Sarasota City Manager Tom Barwin for his effort to encourage us to reduce harm to the environment.

If you spend a few minutes looking at NASA’s web page, you will learn that there is near-total consensus (97%) among the scientists studying climate change that global warming, and the sea rise that it is causing, have been worsened by the way humans have misused the planet, which God has placed in our hands.

I appreciate the thoughtful manner in which Tom Barwin has invited us to seek ways to slow the dumping of carbon into our atmosphere and thereby to protect the life and

In his announcement, Mulvaney said “We’re not going to spend [money] on programs that cannot show that they actually deliver the promises that we’ve made to people.”

Doing away with Meals on Wheels, he said, would “show compassion.”

This is insulting and false. I see firsthand how profoundly the program impacts the community. Meals on Wheels does make a difference, it does have critical results, and taking away food and human contact from vulnerable people does not “show compassion.”

Sarasota’s Meals on Wheels annually serves more than 160,000 meals to homebound seniors, veterans, disabled people, individuals recovering from surgery or coping with a serious illness, and even children. In most cases, the one meal they receive from us is all they will eat that day.

We think saving a life is a great “result.” How about you?

We fear that this proposed budget cut would leave millions of people in dire situations. For 2.4 million Americans, Meals on Wheels makes the difference between continuing to live in their homes—where they want to be—rather than moving to a nursing home.

CPR classes give Longboaters chance to save lives TIPS FOR HANDS-ONLY CPR

More than 800 people took CPR classes through the Longboat Key Fire Department in the past year.

Before giving CPR: n Check the scene and the person. Look for signs of rhythmic, normal breathing. n If there is no response from the victim when asked if he or she is OK, dial 911. n Begin compressions. If the person is unresponsive, perform hands-only CPR.

In the five minutes it takes the Longboat Key Fire Department to respond to an emergency, it’s vital that the victim’s heart is pumping.

It’s this fact and many others that Fire Chief Paul Dezzi hopes the more than 800 people who took CPR classes will remember.

Over the past year, the fire department taught about 40 CPR classes on Longboat. Dezzi said the department was pleasantly surprised at the turnout and plans to continue the classes next year for those interested.

“This is just a plus, plus feelgood story of the Fire Department doing some wonderful things,” said Paul Skversky, who worked to bring CPR classes to the Longboat Key Public Tennis Center.

The classes can be, and were, taught at residences, club meetings and other public spaces.

The mouth-to-mouth portion of CPR can be intimidating to some people, Dezzi has said, so the 45-minute class teaches a “hands-on only” curriculum instead of a four-hour long certification class. Through this shorter class, participants learn

hands-only CPR and how to use automatic external defibrillators.

“What happens with that is we hope they follow the procedure of calling 911 … and they’re able to do chest compressions, and we’ll worry about the airway,” Dezzi said.

Firefighters also taught participants 911 protocol and explained some of the medical equipment.

“We want them to stay on the phone so they [responders] get all that info,” Dezzi said. “It’s important for the responders to know

what exactly they’re getting into.”

Since the classes began, the Fire Department has received positive feedback about the program.

Dezzi said as long as people call and ask for the classes, they’ll be offered.

“Don’t be afraid to help somebody,” Dezzi said. “By doing that and proving that, we feel it’s working, and we hope people continue to come back this coming year.”

Recently, Dezzi has noticed more interaction from witnesses

in emergency situations. If someone gets ill at the tennis center, a group of people is around to tell the medics what’s happening.

“It’s all part of the community effort, and we’re happy to see that,” Dezzi said.

And with more awareness, Skversky sees one problem.

“The only problem, God forbid somebody has a heart attack.

They’re going to get crushed because everyone knows CPR now,” he said.

How to perform hands-only CPR: n Kneel beside the person who needs help. n Place the heel of one hand on the center of the chest. n Place the heel of the other hand on top of the first hand, then lace your fingers together. n Position your body so that your shoulders are directly over your hands, and keep your arms straight. n Push hard and push fast. Use your bodyweight to help you do compressions that are at least two inches deep and delivered at a rate of at least 100 compressions per minute. n Continue hands-only CPR until you see obvious signs of life, another trained responder or EMS professional can take over or an AED becomes available.

June LeBell: The voice of Sarasota’s music community Known for her warmth and expertise, the singer, music critic, radio personality and lecturer died Sunday, April 30.

ne didn’t need to meet June LeBell to feel like she was a friend. In fact, many felt a connection to the music writer, radio personality and lecturer through her voice alone.

June LeBell died Sunday, after a five-year battle with ovarian cancer. She was 73.

For those who knew her —and for many who didn’t — LeBell’s voice is the first thing to come to mind.

For 30 years, it rang out across the airwaves in New York City to greet WQXR’s evening listeners.

As the first female announcer on a major commercial classical music radio station, she interviewed some of the biggest names in the arts — composer Aaron Copland, former artistic director of the New York City Ballet George Balanchine — and countless oth-

ers. She earned 17 awards for her broadcasts, as well as the Florida Broadcasters Association Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.

“She was so seasoned,” says Jeff Spurgeon, WQXR morning host. “She knew her stuff, and she loved to share it. She was an incredible broadcaster.”

A graduate of the High School of Music and Art and the Mannes College of Music in New York City, and the Hartt College of Music in Connecticut, she lent her voice to both creating music and sharing her love for the art. In addition to being a radio host, she was also a professional concert singer, as well as a lecturer, leading her long-running Metropolitan Museum of Art series, “The Sound of Broadway” and Sarasota Institute of Lifetime Learning’s Musical Conversations.

No matter the outlet, she loved connecting musicians and music lovers.

“Through those live interviews and performances, thousands of people got to know her,” says Joseph Holt, artistic director of Choral Artists of Sarasota, who shared hosting duties at Musical Conversations’ Venice sessions.

“In the same way you see actors onscreen and they resonate with you, watching June, you felt like

friends. A lot of people felt very close to her — not only through her experience on the radio in New York City, but also down here. You could look up at a room of 800 to 1,000 people, and all of them feel like they’re best friends with the commentator. She had a unique gift for making that happen.”

Following 9/11, LeBell left New York City and moved to Sarasota, where she wrote for The Observer as music critic. Observer Group Vice President Lisa Walsh recalls the first time they spoke.

“She called me out of the blue and said she wanted to write reviews for The Observer,” says Walsh. “Of course, I knew who she was; I was taken aback at first.

She had such a beautiful voice — as smooth as velvet. She had me at hello. She brought such a wealth of knowledge, which along with her great personality, added so much to our artistic community.”

LeBell wrote weekly music reviews and other columns for The Observer, where she fostered the growth of local musicians with both a critical ear and gracious writing.

“She was a very dear friend to many of the orchestra musicians,” says Anu Tali, music director of the Sarasota Orchestra. “She’s

“June was a truly remarkable human being,” he wrote online in a statement Sunday. “Talented, loving and gifted beyond belief in so many ways. We will all miss her very much. Yesterday was her 73rd birthday, and tomorrow is our eighth wedding anniversary.

Elegant timing as always. My thoughts go out to all of you who will also miss her so very much.”

A service will be held 11:30 a.m.

Wednesday, May 10, at Sarasota National Cemetery. A memorial service and reception will be held at Marble Collegiate church in New York City at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Tidewell Hospice, Sarasota Orchestra or Sarasota Opera.

Maureen Daly Hollingsworth, 86, of Sarasota, died April 22.

She was a career IBM employee who rose from the secretarial pool to senior marketing in IBM’s overseas operations.

Early in her life, Maureen lived in Trumansburg and Interlaken, N.Y. During her time with IBM, she lived in New York City and Armonk, N.Y. She retired with her husband, John Hollingsworth, to Longboat Key. She is survived by her siblings Monica Cannon, Michael, Dan and John Daly; numerous nieces, nephews and several cousins in Ireland.

She lived in Turkey for many years before moving to the United States in 1970. She raised her family in Springfield, Ohio, before she and her husband moved to Longboat Key. Lilo was known for her fashion sense and good humor. She enjoyed gardening, spending time with family and friends at the beach and watching the sun set over the Gulf of Mexico.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Necdet Orhon.

She is survived by her son, Niko Kurkcu; daughters Semra Hughes and Asli Orhon; and son-in-law Tim Hughes.

Maryann Tata, 81, of Longboat Key, died April 24.

She was born on July 14, 1935 in New Britain, Conn., to Mae and Ernest Hanson.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Mount Holyoke College and later studied at Florida Atlantic University, where she earned her master’s in education. She taught at Addison Mizner and Citrus Cove elementary schools.

Throughout her retirement, Maryann volunteered at the Friends of Boynton Beach Library and the Longboat Library. For the past three years, Maryann and her husband of 59 years, Robert, spent their time making friends at Freedom Village in Bradenton.

She is survived by her husband, Robert; children Virginia Phillips, Amy Winslow and Steven Tata; their spouses; seven grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Longboat Library, 555 Bay Isles Road.

Richard Russell, executive director of the Sarasota Opera, first met LeBell in 2005, when she was directing the performing arts center at The Glenridge and he was starting a position as the opera’s marketing director.

As he reached out to Sarasota’s journalists, LeBell was one of the first on his list.

“I had known June’s voice for many years,” says Russell. “I grew up in the New York City area, listening to WQXR, so I was familiar with her voice, and I was excited to meet her in person after having listened to her for so long.

“For someone with such an incredible career and so much knowledge and experience, she was such a warm person. She made me feel so welcome, like I was talking to an old friend. I had scheduled an hour for our lunch, but we stayed and talked for much longer. Anyone who went to one of her SILL lectures recognized her warmth. I hope she’s remembered for that.”

LeBell went on hospice care Tuesday, April 24, updating friends and family on Facebook.

“We called in hospice. They’re coming to us, and they seem wonderful. Bringing a hospital bed today. They’re here for both life and transition. It’s time. ven with a strong breeze blowing across Sarasota Bay, citizen volunteers jumped right in the slightly choppy water.

They had a job to do. Sarasota County hosted the thirdannual Seagrass Survey on April 29. Around 9 a.m., volunteers headed out on the water to their assigned hectagon to count and identify seagrass species to collect data for the county’s Seagrass Monitoring Program.

“Seagrass is one of the premier habitats of the bay, and so our juvenile fish spend part of their life cycle in the seagrass beds,” said Mark Alderson, executive director of the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program.

The Sarasota Estuary Bay Program started evaluating seagrasses in 1988, Alderson said. This was the third publicinvolvement event.

Along with the seagrass survey, the event included live music and booths with interactive demonstrations, crafts and games from the Sarasota Bay Watch, the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program, Mote Marine Laboratory, the Longboat Key Turtle Watch and others.

No one on Longboat Key knows that better than the residents of Longboat Harbour.

About 150 residents gathered for the condominium complex’s annual pizza party April 20.

The celebration serves as an end-of-season

party, and this year, the turnout was larger than last year by a couple dozen.

Pizzas for the party came from two places — Oma’s Pizza and Fire & Stone Pizza. Ice cream came from B’s Cool Treats Ice Cream Truck, and Ned Gray performed live music.
