Cafe owners happy to mark anniversary Longbeach Cafe’s three coowners — Colleen Collandra, her husband, Pete, and Jeff Daly — recently reminisced about opening in 2014, when the breakfast and lunch joint was one of the few businesses in Whitney Beach Plaza.

“It’s been nice to watch it come back to life,” Daly said.

They share fond memories about Isabelle’s Eatery, a similar restaurant that used to operate at the location. Daly and his family had frequented Isabelle’s since the 1980s, and Colleen had worked there as manager and chef. Daly recalled when he asked Colleen and her sister Marlene Zobel, who works as a manager at Longbeach Cafe, what they thought of opening a restaurant at Isabelle’s location.

“They were like, ‘Heck yeah!” Daly said.

All seven seats of Longboat Key’s Town Commission are once again occupied.

On Monday evening, the Town Commission unanimously approved Randy Clair to fill the District 1 seat, which

was left vacant when Commissioner Armando Linde resigned on March 21. Linde and his wife, Felicity, plan to move closer to family in South Carolina.

The vacancy was advertised after Linde’s resignation, and Clair, who served as an at-large commissioner between 2005 and 2009, was the only applicant for the job.

George Spoll formally nominated Clair, and moved to appoint him by unanimous acclamation.

“We are very fortunate to have a very capable gentleman volunteer

to become part of our deliberations,” Spoll said.

Jim Brown seconded Spoll’s motion.

He fondly recalled working with Clair when Brown was elected to the Town Commission in 2009.

“I thought he was the best commissioner that we had at the time,” Brown said. “I would welcome back his input, his knowledge and his experience.”

Clair is a member of the nongovernmental Revitalization Task Force.

Tom Freiwald, the group’s

chairman, attended Monday’s meeting to voice the organization’s support for Clair.

Freiwald said Clair is “uniquely qualified” for the role regarding issues the commission is considering, including planned-unit developments and zoning.

The chairman also noted the difficulty the Key has had in attracting qualified candidates to serve on the commission.

“Someone who is qualified has raised his hand,” Freiwald said.

All six commissioners approved Clair’s appointment.

In an interview after the meeting, Clair mentioned the importance of resolving the Key’s zoning code and emphasized the need for open-space requirements.

In March, Clair was appointed to the Charter Review Committee. He has now resigned from that duty because of his approval to the Town Commission.

Like the Planning and Zoning Board, an elected official cannot serve on the Charter Review Committee.

Clair is the second member of the Charter Review Committee to resign, following Dave Brenner’s resignation last week.

At Monday’s meeting, the Town Commission decided to leave the Charter Review Committee at its current membership of five people instead of seeking two replacements.

All seven people who applied to the charter-review group were approved to serve.

Though he represents District 1 in title, Clair understands his responsibility does not end there.

“I represent all the people on Longboat Key,” Clair said. “And I’m going to do my best to make decisions for the community as a whole.”

A

group of residents on the north end of Longboat Key is working with town officials to preserve a piece of history.

LBK North, formerly known as the North End Coalition of Property Owners, is making progress in finding a new home for a cottage, originally built in the 1930s as part of the historic Whitney Resort. The approximately 42-by-42-foot cottage, built by Gordon Whitney, was moved to the Longboat Key Center for the Arts property to be used as a studio after the resort closed in the early 1950s.

The cottage is in the path of redevelopment at the site of the town’s Center for the Arts. In February, Ringling College of Art and Design announced its plans to sell the arts center property to a private developer, who intends to construct single-family homes.

The Center for the Arts is expected to close at the end of May, though a timeline for the development of the property isn’t clear.

The Whitney Cottage was built to house families and guests at the Whitney Resort, and it is the largest of two cottages moved to the arts center property.

LBK North hopes to move the cottage to “a suitable location on the north end, and restore it for public use.”

“The variety of possibilities for the cottage suggests a multipurpose facility,” reads a March 31 statement from the group. “It could provide a much-needed meeting place for local groups. It could serve as an activity center for the community, a welcome center for the town and a venue for the historical society.”

The Arts Center itself is moving south, to the Town Center, which will be built near Town Hall, on city-owned property that includes vacant land and a parcel

currently home to the Amore restaurant. That process is expected to take at least two years.

LBK North has suggested the site of a long-vacant gas station at the corner of Broadway Street and Gulf of Mexico Drive as a potential location for the cottage, and member Denton Crews said discussions have begun with the property’s owner. The location is less than a half-mile from where the cottage now sits.

Crews said planning for the project is in the beginning stages, and it is yet to be determined what entity would purchase the property. LBK North is exploring options to raise funds, Crews said, and the group is hoping to begin discussions with the town about the possibility of the town acquiring the land.

Vice Mayor Ed Zunz, who represents District 5 on the north end, is working with LBK North to solidify plans for the project.

“We’re looking at finding some public purpose that the building might serve on the site that would be consistent with the neighborhood and not increase density,” Zunz said.

The idea is consistent with a vision Zunz hopes to help make a reality for the area, which includes making the intersection of Broadway Street and GMD “an attractive roundabout” to bolster a sense of entrance to the Key on the north end.

Crews said Ringling College supports the idea of relocating the cottage, going so far as to recommend Johnson Housemoving to assess relocating the cottage.

Brett Johnson of the Parrishbased company has corresponded with Crews about relocating the cottage. Assessments are underway, Johnson said, and the mover said he thinks relocation would be possible, though a piece of the L-shaped building may need to be detached before moving and reattached once it arrives as its new site.

“I believe it will move just fine,” Johnson said.

Aside from fundraising, the plan thus far does not face any “serious obstacles,” Crews said, adding that LBK North is still

OTHER WHITNEY COTTAGES Gordon and Lora Whitney came to Longboat Key in 1935 and built 16 cypress cottages on the gulf and bay that they named Whitney Beach.

In the 1950s, the Whitneys relocated the cottages, many to Longbeach Village, because the resort closed. Those cottages are located in the 6800 and 6900 blocks of Longboat Drive South, the 700 block of Longboat Court, the 7000 block of Lois Avenue and the 6800 block of Pine Street.

properties considered in a referendum. If it had passed, the referendum would have allowed Sarasota-based developer Floridays to apply for 105 additional units from a pool of 250 tourism units, which were approved by Key voters in 2008.

Floridays had proposed to build a 120-unit, four-story hotel on the adjoining properties.

The referendum was rejected by 78% of voters.

Early in March, the property’s owner, the Marterie Family Trust, made improvements to the location, which included repaving the parking lot.

Mistake prompts height-issue delay Town was worried public notice ad did not follow state rules.

After months of discussions on building-height limits and planned-unit developments, it will be another four weeks until the first public hearing of the issue in the form of a town ordinance.

Officials late last week pulled from consideration and rescheduled for May 1 the hearing and first reading after discovering an error in an advertisement meant to notify residents and other interested parties of the Monday, April 3 town meeting.

Town Manager Dave Bullock explained the ordinance regarding PUDs and building heights was given an incorrect heading in a daily-newspaper advertisement, and might have misled readers to think the measure would focus on amendments to the town’s comprehensive plan.

The advertisement, headlined “Town of Longboat Key Notice of Comprehensive Plan Public Hearing Ordinance 201632,” appeared as required in the March 27 editions of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune and Bradenton Herald.

Bullock said he does not believe the advertisement complied with Florida law regarding notification of public hearings.

The portion of the meeting dealing with the comprehensive plan — an overarching document used to guide long-term land use — was discussed as planned and forwarded to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity for review. No discussion of planned-unit development rules took place Monday.

It was the second such delay connected to the precise legal requirements of municipal government. In a meeting in late March, the omission of one spoken word during a town meeting certifying the March 14 elections required the Town Commission on Monday to recertify the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort referendum result, though there was no effect on vote totals or outcome.

Deliberations about building height on Longboat Key began in 2016, though the Town Commission ultimately settled on a 65 feet above elevation maximum, which is currently the town’s standard.

At a meeting in February, the Planning and Zoning Board approved an ordinance that would have allowed additional height — up to 80 feet over elevation — for new buildings, as long as buildings were set back 2.5 times the height of the building from Gulf of Mexico Drive. In other words,

an 80-foot building would have to be no closer than 200 feet from GMD. But at a workshop in March, the Town Commission rejected that 80-foot recommendation and returned to the 65-foot benchmark while keeping the setback rules.

Chuck Whittall, president of Unicorp National Developments, plans to submit a new proposal for redeveloping the Colony property after the commission resolves and approves a PUD process.

It’s a bright Thursday morning, less than 72 hours after Phill Younger stepped down from his seat on the Town Commission, which he held for seven years and could no longer retain because of term limits.

Sitting on his screened porch, the former vice mayor gives no sign that he plans on slowing down.

“I may not be on the commission, but I do have an interest in the welfare of the town,” Younger said. “I want to contribute in any way that I can that’s feasible.”

The previous day, Younger was appointed to serve on the Charter Review Committee. The committee will consider refining portions of the town’s charter, which serves as a basic framework under which the municipality operates, much like the constitution of a state.

With the committee, Younger hopes to explore adjustments to the town’s districting process regarding commission elections.

for more qualified candidates that want to serve, knowing that all are responsible for representing the entire island.”

As an at-large commissioner, that style of representation is one Younger honed on the dais. He said he governed with an open mind, understanding that his responsibility was to the entire population of the Key and was never to fulfill his own interests.

It’s an attitude for which his former colleagues have com-

mended him, among other traits, including his precise attention to detail.

“When it comes to dotting the i’s, crossing the t’s, reading every single word and coming back with an opinion, I don’t think any commissioner’s ever done a better job than Commissioner Younger,” said Commissioner Irwin Pastor.

“I believe this whole community owes him a tremendous thank you.”

Younger’s analytical skills were

evident during his first year on the commission, when he presented beach-monitoring data that prompted the commission to change the town’s beach-nourishment approach from renourishing sand on all of the island’s beaches to a focus on nourishing spots with high erosion.

Younger said the combined efforts of Lenny Landau and himself were instrumental in bringing the estimated cost of the program down from $45 million in 2012 to $22 million in 2017.

“A lot of analysis went into cutting that number in half,” Younger said.

While serving on the commission, Younger also developed a reputation for voicing his opinion.

“I’ve never been bashful,” he

said with a smile.

Former Commissioner Lynn Larson remembers running for a seat on the Town Commission alongside Younger in 2010, recalling a man who was a soft-spoken while talking to voters. Though Younger lost that election, he was appointed to the commission two months later after Gene Jaleski resigned.

“Well, he hasn’t been soft-spoken since then,” Larson said with a laugh.

Though Younger expressed strong opinions, he showed strength in flexibility as well.

Mayor Terry Gans noted situations where he has seen Younger start out “very, very strong” on one side of an issue, then, after listening to commission discussion, change his opinion.

“That takes a lot of courage,” Gans said. “I’m going to miss having him by my side, though I think figuratively he’ll always be there.”

Younger’s open-minded style has set a precedent for newer commissioners, like Jack Daly.

While running for the first time for his District 4 seat, Daly said Younger reminded him of the value of listening to the other commissioners, and being careful not to make up his mind “until the final dust clears.”

As Younger begins his next chapter, he wants Key residents to know he is grateful for the support they have shown him.

“It’s been an honor and a privilege to serve this island,” Younger said.

TRY A FRUITVILLE OVERPASS Sarasota city officials are stuck on narrowing Fruitville Road, seemingly ignoring the road is a major east-west artery. Surely there are creative alternatives. How about a charrette?

W

hen three Sarasota city officials addressed last week the Longboat Key Town Commission on the city’s traffic plans near downtown, the city officials repeated what they have been saying for months.

Here are their options, they told the commissioners: n Reducing Fruitville to a two-lane road between Lemon and Cocoanut avenues, with roundabouts at those two intersections as well as at Central Avenue. Bicycle lanes would be removed, and sidewalks would be widened to 16 feet along the threeintersection stretch. n The other alternative includes widening sidewalks to 10 feet and removing bike lanes.

That was it. No other options.

The message from Sarasota City Hall has been clear and consistent. It’s not about moving cars efficiently. City Manager Tom Barwin and Sarasota city commissioners have one vision: They want slow-rolling traffic weaving through downtown roundabouts in an urban setting that embraces and emphasizes pedestrians and bicycles.

It’s not about the automobiles and trucks on the roads that far, far outnumber the pedestrians — and will still far, far outnumber the pedestrians even with wider sidewalks and bike lanes. They are stuck on this idea of the future whereby the occupants of all the new apartments and condominiums north of Fruitville will be hip urbanites who will leave their Priuses parked and walk every day across Fruitville Road to go to and from their apartments to Main Street.

Never mind the fact that Fruitville Road is the main transportation artery for the commercial vehicles and residents of more than 12,000 housing units on the barrier islands who travel regularly to Interstate 75. Or who will count on Fruitville Road for an evacuation route.

The apparent intransigence at Sarasota City Hall and its lack of creative, problem-solving efforts with the Florida Department of Transportation are remarkable. For two years now, to little avail, barrier island residents and businesses, as well as downtown residents and businesses, have harped on the coming traffic tsunami.

As a Sarasota city resident lamented to us recently: “I can’t even imagine how this is going to work at Fruitville and U.S. 41 and at the Ringling Bridge and Gulfstream when you have only

one entrance off of 41 to the RitzCarlton Hotel, to the Ritz Towers, The Vue and the Westin Hotel.” Add to that the planned tower to the north of The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota and the development of the Quay property, as well as the installation of two twolane roundabouts and the narrowing of Fruitville Road.

Yes, how is that going to work?

It’s difficult to imagine that it will be pleasant.

Are there alternatives?

One, of course, is to do nothing.

But it’s difficult to say what would be worse — that or the city’s roundaboutnarrowing Fruitville plan.

Another alternative: An overpass — one that would go over the 41-Gulfstream intersection and curve north, connecting to Fruitville. Erect the overpass for traffic going both ways — east on Fruitville to the barrier islands and west to connect with Fruitville Road. Create a nonstop overpass.

You can envision exit ramps at the east end of Fruitville allowing motorists to go north or south on U.S. 41, and an exit ramp at the intersection of Gulfstream and 41, allowing motorists to go north or south on 41.

Instead of slowing traffic on Fruitville, build pedestrian overpasses, with escalator stairs. Or build pedestrian tunnels underneath Fruitville.

These would create obvious problems of becoming homes for the homeless and magnets for crime.

Perhaps these are impractical ideas.

But the larger point is this: Before the city moves ahead with installing its two-lane roundabouts and narrowing Fruitville, you would think its leaders would have the smarts to engage its constituents and actually practice government by the people, not government by the bureaucrats.

When talk began of replacing the rickety drawbridge that was the Ringling Bridge, the then-City Commission at least conducted numerous charrettes to obtain public comment on how a future bridge should look.

And when the city decided it is time to redevelop the property surrounding the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, volunteer representatives of Bayfront 20:20 conducted dozens of town hall meetings to hear what residents want that 40 acres to be.

For an issue that has become as contentious as replacing the Ringling Bridge and that affects just as many people as a new Ringling Bridge, you would think the commissioners

TAXPAYERS’ WATCHDOG He was never one for fanfare during his six years on the Longboat Key Town Commission.

But former Commissioner Phill Younger, who reached his term limit last month and vacated his at-large seat, will be missed nonetheless.

For the past six years, he was the taxpayers’ champion and watchdog. None of the commissioners had a command of town finances the way Younger did. He devoured details.

What’s more, Longboat residents always could count on Younger to challenge the status quo and ask town administration the unexpected, penetrating questions.

Every commission needs a Phill Younger — diligent, prepared, analytical, detailoriented and astute. This was a bonus: He is and was modest and never out for self-aggrandizement.

While someone else on the commission will need to fill Younger’s role, lucky for residents and taxpayers, Younger is serving on the town’s Charter Review Committee. You can be sure he’ll do his part not to let that commission perform below expectations.

Nelson’s Gorsuch vote reveals who comes first: Himself This is why the American electorate is so disgusted with so many politicians: The case of longtime U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla. According to the lamestream media in D.C., Nelson is called a “centrist,” which by D.C. media standards means he doesn’t just vote party line; on occasion he will vote for what is best for the country.

Ha! Nelson, of course, is far from what a real centrist is. The nonpartisan Council for Citizens Against Government Waste, which rates congressional members on their voting records with respect to defending taxpayer interests and fiscal responsibility puts Nelson in its worst category: “Hostile.”

In the council’s most recent rankings, Nelson earned 19% on his voting record; 100% is best.

confirm Gorsuch to the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals and voted to end a filibuster on the nomination of conservative Justice Samuel Alito —two reasons Nelson carries the so-called centrist label.

But now look at Mr. Centrist. He said he will vote in favor of a filibuster to stop Gorsuch’s nomination.

Why the switch? According to Politico, two Florida Democrats are considering challenging Nelson in the 2018 Democratic primary election. By voting against Gorsuch, Politico says, “Nelson chose to lock down his left flank.”

In other words, help himself get reelected.

That, dear readers, exposes Washington politics for what it’s really all about: Me first; the party second; what’s right and best for the nation … Huh? Forget that. Nobody in Congress is that stupid.

In the recent referendum on the Colony, the voters of LBK have not just spoken but have sent a message that is so loud and clear that it can’t possibly be misunderstood: 3,220 to 465. I’m sure that the 400-plus represented some Colony unit owners and some others who stood to profit from the development. For all practical purposes, this vote was 3,200-0. Longboat Key does not need or want another hotel, whether it’s three-star, four-star or five. Longboat Key doesn’t need or want a big ballroom. The much-expanded former Hilton is soon to open. I presume there is still a plan to add something at the Longboat Key Club, which has been approved in concept.

The commissioners should act on the message of the voters and rescind (after seven years) the grandfathered 270 units on the Colony property. They should move to condemn the dilapidated property and have all the structures removed by whoever owns them, and let the zoning density revert to the legal limit of 130 units. The developer has repeatedly said that he can make money by constructing 130 upscale residences on the site.

Sounds like a good plan.

The developer says he wants to do all this because “it’s right for Longboat Key.” I think the voters have indicated what’s right for LBK and I ask the Commission to act accordingly.

Tax system incentivizes vacation rentals I commend you on the balance you achieved in presenting the arguments in the debate over vacation rentals and home rule.

I have not reached a conclusion, nor would it make any difference if I did. You see, we are nonresidents, not homesteaders, so we have no right to vote. As

such, we are at the mercy of local voters to determine what is best for Longboat Key. Nonetheless, I wanted to add one important fact missing from your arguments. As nonresidents, our property tax base is roughly double that of homesteaders.

That is to say, for the privilege of spending our lives here parttime (and believe me it is truly a privilege), we do, unfortunately, contribute more to the local tax base than homesteaders who have a say in how we are governed.

To some, I understand that the ability to rent out one’s home truly helps to cover these additional costs.

I would also argue that there is an unfairness in the tax rate.

Given, once again, that we are part-timers, we are not benefitting from the full-time services that homesteaders are. So, we, in effect, are subsidizing full-time residents.

Last week our Men’s Club hosted two sessions of the hands only CPR course conducted by the LBK Fire Department. What a valuable service they provided to our community. We had over 50 residents and complex employees attend the training.

They were great teachers, not only instructing us in the new CPR methods, but also educating us on town services and resources.

Last weekend we attended a safety fair at the North Fire Station. We were amazed at the amount of information available to us, the willingness of town employees to engage in discussions and couldn’t believe how much fun we had. This event was clearly a tribute to the way the town of LBK is run.

It is very easy to criticize, and that day may come for us, too.

After 13 years of owning on LBK and enjoying life as snowbirds, we finally made the move to become permanent residents and now call LBK our home.

Since becoming permanent residents, we have paid much closer attention to the management of the town of LBK. Our first experience voting as Florida residents was in the town election last month. We took advantage of the opportunity of early voting at Town Hall and were greeted by pleasant, informative town employees who walked us through the process and then offered delicious snacks in the lobby.

Recent articles mention the proposed plan to reduce the width of Fruitville Road toward its western end and add three roundabouts along the route.

City planners, business owners and maybe some citizens have long wanted to link downtown Sarasota with the Rosemary District. Making the expanded downtown a more walkable area could prove attractive for all.

But how can we solve the volume of traffic issue on Fruitville?

Crossing this street on foot does present a challenge. Reducing the four lanes to two seems a contrary action. How can you get more from less? The abrupt end of four lanes into two introduced by a series of roundabouts intuitively makes little sense.

What to do? Go up and over.

Leave Fruitville as four lanes; just improve the roadway.

Improve the sidewalk with bricks and paving stones and other decorative material.

Create the roundabout at Fruitville Road and U.S. 41, already in the plans.

Create a series of bridges across Fruitville Road. Each pedestrian bridge would feature stairs, of course, and two glass enclosed elevators.

The cost saved by not constructing the roundabouts would fund the bridges and elevators.

The art application, sculpture or two dimensional, from the roundabouts could make the elevators and stairs most attractive.

We need to apply nontraditional solutions to our traffic problems.

There is a vacancy on the board because of former Chairman Jim Brown’s departure. On March 14, Brown was elected to the Town Commission. As an elected official, Brown is no longer eligible to serve on the Planning and Zoning Board.

Along with the vacancy, Kenneth Schneier and Stephen Madva are seeking to renew their terms on the board. In March, Schneier was chosen vice chair while Madva was selected to be secretary.

Applications are being accepted by the town for the three seats on the Planning and Zoning Board, and the Town Commission is tentatively scheduled to make selections on May 1.

Asked about the issue regarding representation for Manatee County on the board, Commissioner Jack Daly stressed that expertise is the main factor that should be considered in selecting members.

Currently, no member of the Longboat Key Planning and Zoning Board resides in Manatee County.

B.J. Bishop was appointed to chair the Planning and Zoning Board in March by board members at the group’s meeting. She has served on the board since 2006, including a tenure as chair from 2008 through 2013.

While discussing the future of the board, Bishop noted that the five members of the group all live on the southern portion of the Key, the portion in Sarasota County.

While Zunz agreed with Daly that proper expertise is vital, the vice mayor said he would be inclined to vote for a candidate from Manatee County to fill the vacancy on the board over one from Sarasota County if both candidates were qualified.

“They should strive to get some balance,” Zunz said.

Mayor Terry Gans affirmed that appointments to the Planning and Zoning Board should go to the most qualified candidates, regardless of where on the Key they reside. He also mentioned another top issues in the decision-making process.

“We need people to apply,” Gans said.

Upon arrival, the officer saw the people had no beach chairs. The people, who told the officer they thought the chairs were for public use, said someone had complained and they returned the chairs to where they belonged.

All Faiths Food Bank CEO Sandra Frank painted a poignant picture of child hunger on March 29 during the Campaign Against Summer Hunger Kick Off Breakfast.

“When you see children on the school bus, on the soccer field, hitting a baseball, one out of every two of those children are hungry,” Frank said.

Representatives from dozens of community organizations gathered at Michael’s On East to launch the fourth annual Campaign Against Summer Hunger to mitigate the effects of food insecurity after school dismisses for the summer.

All Faiths Food Bank estimates there are 40,000 children in Sarasota and DeSoto counties and their younger siblings who won’t have a reliable source of enough food this summer.

Campaign advertisements throughout the Michael’s On East ballroom reminded community partners “hunger doesn’t take a summer vacation.” However, the resources available to children suffering from food insecurity do.

Last year’s campaign reached 31,000 children, but Feeding America Chairman Keith Monda and Gulf Coast Community Foundation Senior Vice President for Philanthropy Veronica Brady told guests this year the campaign was setting its bar higher.

When the officer arrived, a man reported that he had received a call from a person claiming to be from the U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic. This caller told the man they were holding his grandson because of some violation, and the man would need to send money to secure his release. The man said he realized something was not right because he does not have a grandson by the name given by the caller. When the man

And, we realize this could be bad news to some, riverboat gambling is not coming to Siesta Key. Sorry, Floyd Mayweather fans.

So, if you had us figured out last week, then we hope you shared the same laughs we did in producing our annual April Fools’ stories in the March 30 edition of the Longboat Observer.

From blue streaks across newspaper covers to blue handprints on the sidewalk, Sarasota is turning various shades of blue this month.

It’s all in the name of Paint the Town Blue, the annual campaign held by Child Protection Center.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention month, so to bring awareness to a local level, CPC is asking local businesses and individuals to paint SRQ blue.

“It’s important because we want people to kind of take the blinders off and really realize child abuse is real, and it exists in our backyards, and it’s right here in Sarasota,” said Mya Widmyer, special events associate for CPC. In the past, businesses have given profits from certain sales back to CPC or painted their windows blue, restaurants have offered drink specials and offices have offered dress down Fridays for employees who bring in $5 to donate to CPC. Jill McMullen, co-chairwoman of Paint the Town Blue, hopes the campaign brings awareness to CPC’s services.

“It’s hard to believe because we live in paradise … It is happening,” she said.

Goldfarb steps off her yoga mat after 30 years

Executive director continues as leader of Longboat Key Education Center but will no longer lead yoga classes.

S

usan Goldfarb came to Longboat Key in 1986 and got a part-time job handling marketing and public relations for the then-brand new Education Center. One of the perks was that she could take classes for free, and she signed up for yoga with the late Ed Schetter.

He became ill in 1987, asked her to take over and the rest, as they say, is history.

Goldfarb soon developed a following and grew the yoga schedule to five classes a week, all of them full. Recently, she has hired teachers and cut back to teaching two classes.

Now, she has decided that the term just ended was her last.

“So many of my students were

moving off the Key or becoming unable to participate, and I take that as a signal from the universe that now is the time for me to stop teaching,” she said.

She is staying on as executive director and relishes the opportunity to spend more time expanding her “Like College Only Better” curriculum.

Goldfarb began her yoga journey in 1974. She and her late husband, Richard Goldfarb, went to a retreat at the renowned Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat in the Bahamas. She found the chanting, healthy eating and Hatha, which is the physical practice of yoga, appealing. A resident of Toronto, she earned her fitness certification there in 1982 and taught yoga from 19831985 before moving to Florida.

Teachers revere the sources of their own learning and in that role, Goldfarb credits Lilias Folan who “Made yoga accessible to people.” Another major influence was the equally famous Rodney Yee, “very gentle, with a nice manner.” But Goldfarb asserts (and I agree) that teachers learn the most from our students.

Her students have taught Goldfarb that, “Yoga is about self-acceptance, not selfimprovement. It is about listening versus talking, accepting versus judging, practicing versus preaching. Preaching is hollow. I try not to preach but to

She turned out to be Evaleon Hill, a meditation instructor, retreat leader, lawyer and college teacher. The result is two new retreats on the 20172018 schedule. Goldfarb may be off the yoga mat, but she is clearly more than ever on the job.

practice. If I’m not being kind to myself, I can’t ask my students to be kind.” Because her teaching has been mostly with seniors and safety is a big concern, she has also learned to keep things simple.

Asked about her own practice, Goldfarb explains that given the demands of her job, her personal yoga time and her classroom time were one and the same.

“The only time I had for yoga was summer or teaching. And

one of the advantages of the class commitment was that it made sure that I did yoga. That time was my best, authentic self. Yoga keeps me feeling and looking good. I go in and out on weight and yoga keeps me in check. And if I don’t do it, my joints start to ache.”

While there will still be yoga classes at the Education Center three or more days weekly in season, it is clear Goldfarb will miss her students and her

Frank Gangi, 81, of Sarasota, died Jan. 3.

He was born in Somerville, Mass., to Frank and Yolanda Gangi.

Gangi joined the National Guard at age 17 and enlisted in the U.S. Army at 18. He served for more than 22 years, rising to the rank of master sergeant. He is a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars and received the Bronze Star in 1969 while in Vietnam.

He retired to Sarasota in 1975 and was a JROTC instructor at Sarasota and Riverview high schools. After retiring as a teacher, he worked at the Tangerine Bay Club on Longboat Key and started his own business of monitoring homes for seasonal residents.

He is survived by his son, Frank E. Gangi; daughter, Lisa M. Gangi; grandson, Cameron; and brothers Richard and Michael.

A committal ceremony with military honors will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 14, at Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 S.R. 72.

THE REV. J. CLIFFORD GRISE

The Rev. J. Clifford Grise, 97, died March 25.

He was born in Southington, Conn., to David and Mary Grise.

He studied at St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, Conn. and St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore. He was ordained on March 17, 1945.

During his more than 72 years of service, he worked in various churches and was a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force.

In 1963, he became the first pastor at St. Agnes Church in Greenwich, where he stayed until he was appointed pastor and principal at St. Peter Church in Danbury.

He retired in 1986 but assisted St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church on Longboat for many years. He later returned to Connecticut and resided at the Catherine Dennis Keefe, Queen of the Clergy Residence for retired priests in Samford.

He is survived by many nieces and nephews and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.

Local green thumbs take talents to Westchester Four Westchester residents wanted their property to feel like a tropical paradise, so they took matters into their own hands.

As you arrive at the Westchester property, you’re greeted with tall trees, colorful flowers and vibrantly green grass.

The property is a hidden paradise, of sorts. The entrance is bordered by pigmy palms, orange bromeliads and coontie, and the pool is lined with pink hibiscus and Carissa. But it didn’t always look like that. Over the past eight years, four residents have worked to give the property a tropical vibe.

“We’re a small community of people,” Freddie Baribault said.

“Our whole goal is, this is our home, and we want it to be a beautiful garden and to enjoy it.”

Before the hard work of Baribault, Conrad Wiet, Carol Rhoder and Bonnie Cocchiaraley, the only landscaping Baribault recalls are random houseplants that would wilt when residents ventured back north for the summer. There was no general landscaping.

Cocchiaraley said she missed gardening in New York and wanted to find something creative to do here. She had a friend who was

a landscape architect who visited and walked through the property explaining what could work.

Although she wasn’t an expert on plant material, the artist had an eye for design and sketched out ideas. That has been the blueprint, with few modifications, for the four garden-enthusiasts’ work over the past decade.

“We’re constantly adding plants,” Baribault said. “We have 365 days of summer here, and plants have a lifetime and after

awhile, you have to replace and renew, so it’s a constant maintenance to keep everything happy.”

More than 100 trees, from ficus to various palms, span the 7.5 acres.

Agave plants border Westchester’s beach access. Two large planters sit on either side of the pool entrance. The group, which is allotted a small budget each year, has worked with two landscaping companies since the start of the transformation. Until the

fall, they worked with Landscape in Paradise, which the group agreed brought a lot of good ideas to their property. They now work with P & L Lawn Maintenance.

They don’t use a lot of plants from the North because those require more water, and the group already has multiple challenges related to the local conditions — saltwater from the Gulf of Mexico and sand, which makes up most of their landscape.

Storms in February caused

some wind damage to the plants and brought more saltwater onto the property. Baribault said it took them a lot of time to find the right plant for the right location.

They redid the Indian Hawthorn along the pool three times before it took.

“It’s trial and error,” Baribault said. “You never know how it’s going to turn out.”

But despite the obstacles, the property is blooming with color, and it seems to be a hit among the residents.

As Baribault walks around the property explaining the plants and future plans, a resident stops her to tell her how nice the landscaping looks. The smile on Baribault’s face says it all — her hard work, along with the other green thumbs, has paid off.

Winding Oaks bids farewell to snowbirds

So, to give their snowbirds a proper farewell, about 70 Winding Oaks residents gathered April 2 at Bay Isles Beach Club. Complete with an ice cream truck, food catered from Ciao Italia restaurant and live music performed

The clubhouse social room was transformed into a mini-Broadway stage as Connie Scardelli performed a rendition of “Chicago The Musical” for residents. She opened her performance with “All That Jazz.” It was the final gathering of the season for Beachplace residents.

s the final matches of the day finished up, The Longboat Key Tennis Center became a party scene.

Members of Friends of Tennis gathered March 28 for their annual end-of-season potluck and captains’ appreciation dinner.

As one court transformed into a buffet line, members filled their

plates with fruit salad, meatballs, cupcakes, brownies and various other appetizers and desserts.

The Friends of Tennis is a nonprofit organization that aims to promote and enhance the sport at the Longboat Key Public Tennis Center.

s the sun set over Sarasota Bay, the lawn of Michael’s on the Bay at Selby Gardens filled up with chatter and clinking glasses, and rightfully so.

As saying goes, birds of a feather flock together.

This year, seabird supporters proved that true at the biggest fundraiser ever for Save Our Seabirds.

Save Our Seabirds Sixth Annual Sunset Soiree brought nearly 250 supporters together March 30 for an evening of food, fun and feathers.

The nonprofit organization, located on City Island, rescues, rehabilitates and releases wild birds and cares for those that cannot be released.

The event is usually held at Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, but this year, the Sunset Soiree switched to a location that allowed for a front-row view of a Sarasota sunset to match the inspiration for the event’s title.

The event began with a cocktail hour complete with hors d’oeuvres, photo opportunities with birds and a silent auction. To add a little sparkle to the event, a onecarat diamond was attached to one of 100 glasses of champagne that were offered for sale. The remaining 99 were cubic zirconia.

Save Our Seabirds CEO David Pilston said his favorite part of the evening was seeing all the supporters.

“We’ve come so far in the last two years, and it’s all because of these people,” he said.

he main foyer of Bird Key Yacht Club was filled with chatter March 30 as members and their guests arrived for the monthly style show.

As the music got louder, the runway got busier as each model took their turn striking a pose. This month, J. McLaughlin was the featured retailer, and Bluemercury provided the makeup. Eleven models hit the runway after guests enjoyed lunch.

St. Mary women’s trendy afternoon

t was hard to tell the models from the guests as women arrived March 27 at the Sarasota Yacht Club.

Attendees donned their best cute and casual outfits, including plenty of Lilly Pulitzer dresses, for the annual St. Mary Women’s Guild fashion show. The “Chantilly Lace” show featured clothing by Dillard’s, hair by Design 2000 and makeup by Esteé Lauder.

Five women modeled three outfits from the department store and one special guest model, Harry Christensen of Harry’s Continental Kitchens, modeled two outfits. Before the fashion show, the guild nominated officers for 2017.

In between each round of outfits the planning committee called out various raffle numbers for items such as gift cards to The Lazy Lobster, Tyler’s Ice Jane Vorel is all Cream, Café Don Giovanni smiles as she takes and Dry Dock Waterfront the runway during Grill. the “Chantilly Lace” Guests enjoyed black Fashion Show. and blue salad with beef tenderloin and Key lime pie with Chantilly cream for lunch. Proceeds from this year’s fashion show will go to local charities.

efore the choir could begin its concert, Artistic Director Ann StephensonMoe had to explain that the members’ sparkly shirts were in honor of Florence Katz.

Katz, who died in December 2015, had style, according to Stephenson-Moe. Katz also had musical talent and served as the choir and music director at Temple Beth Israel for 22 years.

To honor her dedication, the temple hosted its first Florence Katz Memorial Concert on March 29. The temple’s choir, which includes professionals thanks to Katz, sang various songs that reminded them of Katz or were favorites of the late director.

“This was her first love after my father,” said Judy Vigder, Katz’s daughter.

Vigder wrote a short speech that her husband read. Vigder explained her mother’s history with the choir and wrote that people sang her praises of being a warm person in addition to her musical talent.

The concert brought more than 200 people to the temple.

Following the concert, guests enjoyed dessert and drinks. All proceeds benefited the Temple Beth Israel Choir Fund.

The pair would play a few bars from a familiar songs, after which the audience would attempt to guess the title of the composition.

Those who knew the songs hummed the remaining bars after Ortmann and Geraci had stopped.

Geraci said it was hard for him to believe the event was indeed in its third year.

“But time marches on,” Geraci said with a laugh.

or their third annual concert event, Jan Ortmann and Bob Geraci decided to mix it up for their fellow Longboat Harbour residents.

“If you came here to hear classical music,” Geraci told the audience, “you’ll hear some, but you won’t hear it all night long.”

This year, Ortmann and Geraci added some more compositions from Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. They also incorporated an audienceparticipation game into the program.

Michele Butler, Laurie Saggese and Natalie Fazio spent the day cooking the Greek Night feast that included chicken kabobs, Greek meatballs and spanakopita, a Greek spinach pie. Even the tables matched the theme with white tablecloths and blue candles, the colors of the Greek flag. Hundreds come out to Run for the Turtles

C

oming off a record-setting nesting season for sea turtles in 2016, the team at Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium is gearing up to do it again.

But before Mote begins monitoring nests and counting eggs, it hosted the 31st annual Run for the Turtles.

The race, which attracted between 800 and 1,000 competitors to Siesta Key Public Beach on April 1, benefited Mote’s Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Program.

Last year’s count shows about 1,500 nests on Longboat Key and Siesta Key shores.

It’s tough for researchers to truly know the impact of their work, since sea turtles don’t

reach maturity until they are around 30 years old. Therefore, researchers won’t conclusively know how last year’s season will impact sea turtle populations for at least another 30 years.

However, those numbers do suggest an encouraging trend.

Kristen Mazzarella, a senior biologist with Mote’s Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Program, said the Mote’s research and conservation program was created 36 years ago, which suggests their efforts are being rewarded.

“We think what we’re seeing is from the efforts that were started 35 years ago,” Mazzarella said.
