Coming attractions The proposed Longboat Key Arts, Cultural and Education Center could cost about $18 million.

P

reliminary plans released in January for the Longboat Key Arts, Culture and Education Center marks the first official step toward building the donation-funded project.

The Ringling College of Art and Design estimates it will take more than $18 million to design, construct and furnish a more than 18,000-square-foot facility on 4.8 acres in the Town Center purchased by the taxpayers near Longboat Key Town Hall and Publix.

“It’s very much what I was expecting, and a little bit more,” Public Works Director Isaac Brownman said of the preliminary design and programming plan.

The Longboat Key Foundation is responsible for privately raising the money Ringling College of Art and Design said is needed to construct the facility by 2022.

But the foundation hasn’t started fundraising yet for lack of a confirmed design that’s been approved by the Town Commission, said Vice Chairman Warren Simonds.

The site’s stormwater management plan and all other infrastructure, including sewer, water and parking, are subject to review by the Public Works Department, Brownman said.

“We want to make sure that when we’re fundraising, we know what we’re going to be selling,” Simonds said.

WHAT’S PROPOSED

The center, as proposed in the design and programming plan, is envisioned as two structures separated by an east-west “landscape spine.”

The space between the two structures is planned to include a courtyard and amphitheater, bordered to the west by a stormwater management pond and to the east by a colonnade and the center’s main entrance.

Parking lots are planned to border the Bay Isles Road property, although Ringling College plans to leverage additional parking spaces around the 50-acre Town Center to accommodate its visitors.

“A portion of the Arts, Culture, and Education Center’s site is one of the last undeveloped areas of the Town Center,” according to the plan. “The Arts, Culture, and Education Center has the unique opportunity to leverage existing adjacent surplus parking to reduce its development footprint, preserve existing vegetation, and improve stormwater management capacity for the broader Town Center.”

Brownman said he couldn’t comment on the proposed parking plan and, pending Town Commission approval of the preliminary design and programing plan, would have to ask other businesses in the area what they

thought about the prospect of offering their parking space to the center.

Ringling College did not return requests for comment by deadline.

The southern building is intended for instructional spaces. It would include classrooms, a computer lab and teaching studios. The northern structure is intended for exhibitions and assemblies, including a black box theater, a gallery and a lounge.

P e r fo r m a n c e s in the 3,000-square-foot black box theater are planned to accommodate between 150 and 215 patrons — lectures in the same space could be attended by between 175 and 275 audience members.

A 1,200-square-foot gallery with rotating visual arts exhibits is planned to serve as a partition between the theater and a 1,000-square-foot lounge. The lounge, which may include a bar or kitchenette, is planned to serve as a pre-function space for the gallery and theater or a hub for students to gather for classes.

Each of the four classrooms is designed to seat 40 students, which Ringling has planned for lecture and seminar-based learning. Two teaching studios, with a capacity of 20 people, are meant to accommodate visual art production, including drawing, painting, ceramics and jewelry making, according to the plan.

Ringling College will present this proposal to the Town Commission, which must ultimately approve the project on townowned land, at the Feb. 21 regular workshop meeting.

Simonds said this center will be instrumental in keeping people on the island.

“It will diminish the amount of traffic flow because they won’t have to leave the island to do things,” Simonds said.

Don Whiston, who’s been visiting the Key since the 1950s, said the Arts, Cultural and Education Center will be great for the island.

But he also said he can see how it would be hard to get older people in the community to go to classes.

Karen Kroll, who said she’s been coming to Longboat Key for 25 years, hopes that some of her comedy mystery theater could be shown in the black box theater.

Kroll said she’s written five plays.

“I would hope that people would come and take classes and learn something new or refresh something old,” Kroll said.

Becky van der Bogert, an 11-year full-time resident of Bay Isles, says she’s excited about more arts on the Key. “The arts are part of the reason we moved here,” she said. “There’s a lot going on in Sarasota, it’d be nice to have some of it going on here.”

Police rule out accidental, natural causes in sauna death

Longboat Key Police Department investigators have ruled out accidental or natural causes of death in their probe of the circumstances that led to the discovery of a woman’s body Jan. 23 in a sauna at the Longboat Key Club Moorings clubhouse, according to the department.

Law enforcement and the District 12 Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Russell Vega have not said how the 54-year-old woman, whose body bore signs of trauma, died.

There has been no determination if the death was a homicide or suicide, said Police Chief Pete Cumming.

Family members identified the woman as Lori Martin, a woman whose death Vega said he was investigating.

The woman has not been publicly identified by police.

Blood was found at the scene, prompting police to “essentially dismantle” most of the sauna, sending panels to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office for forensic inspection.

Longboat Police Department spent about $10,000 Tuesday to send all evidence it gathered at the scene, including a prescription pill bottle and a water bottle, to private labs for forensics to expedite the investigation, Cumming said.

A security video reviewed by police shows the woman leaving a boat at the Moorings around 11 a.m. and not returning, he said.

Someone staying at the Moorings found her body about six hours later, Cumming said.

Police estimate Martin died between noon and 2 p.m.

Cumming said his investigators have opinions about how the woman died but won’t release anything publicly until the department receives its report from the Medical Examiner.

“I’m not panicking, we’re putting all our resources on it. We’re where we should be with the investigation,” Cumming said last week.

court, have amended what some players have said is an unclear sign-in sheet and proposed adding pickleball court lines to one of the two public tennis courts at the park.

Text at the top of a bulletin meant to organize play, which caused frustration in players about whether the paper posted on a cork board nearby was for reserving the court, has been changed from “Court Sign-In” to read “WAITING LIST TO PLAY NEXT.” Confusion about the purpose of the former sign-in sheet prompt-

ed one individual to write “WHY BOTHER!” across multiple columns and rows.

Public Works Director Isaac Brownman said the department is also looking at what it would cost to add lines for two pickleball courts to one of the tennis courts — one on each side of the net. The department would also purchase two “roll-up” pickleball nets that could be placed on either side of the existing tennis net.

Parks and Recreation Manager Mark Richardson said the pickleball lines will be painted blue.

Pickleball is played on a 20-by-

44-foot court as opposed to the 36-by-78-foot dimensions for a tennis court. The net is also 2 inches lower than a tennis net, 34 inches at the center rather than 36.

It could be three or four weeks before the tennis court at Bayfront Park is painted with pickleball lines, Brownman said.

“I think it would help congestion and make people happier,” said Karen Hahn, who started playing the sport at Bayfront a few months ago.

Sarasota County has more than 40 pickleball courts, most of which are outdoor and painted on existing tennis courts. The fast-paced paddle sport has been growing nationwide, touted by NBC News as the fastest-growing sport in the country.

Dolores Diener, who’s been playing pickleball at Bayfront Park since it reopened in November, said it took some time for her to orient herself when she’d played pickleball on tennis courts elsewhere. But after a few volleys, Diener said she found her groove.

“We could easily play [pickleball] on those two [tennis] courts,” Diener said of Bayfront Park.

husband and a self-proclaimed representative of the informal Longboat Key pickleball group, stood before the Town Commission at its regular meeting Feb. 5, and thanked the board and town staff for considering additional pickleball courts.

“So many people are playing and talking, we’ve almost generated our own little system,” Tom Diener said in an interview days before the meeting.

And the word pickleball has come up much more in the past few years at another organized racket-sport complex around town: the Longboat Key Public Tennis Center. Kay Thayer, Tennis Center director, said she would have balked four years ago at the mention of adding pickleball courts.

Tom Diener said he thinks “it would be most helpful” if the town installed more pickleball courts at the Tennis Center. Thayer said the idea warrants discussion.

“I think pickleball is really taking off. I think it’s something that we can look to in the future to become bigger and bigger,” Thayer said. “I wouldn’t be opposed, if the town would add pickleball courts to the tennis center.”

Colony application gets expedited schedule Town boards scheduled to hear and decide on the plan to develop the former site of the Colony before town elections.

Development at the site of the former Colony Beach & Tennis Resort could be approved before residents cast their ballots in March.

The Town Commission approved at its regular meeting Monday an expedited schedule for hearing the planned unit development and outline development plan, or PUD/ODP, as often referred to at these meetings, and final site plan.

If all goes as planned, commissioners could take a final vote on Unicorp National Developments’ application by March 16, four days before three contested Town Commission seat elections.

The Planning and Zoning Board and the Town Commission have both allocated a full day on two occasions to review the application for putting a 166-room hotel and 78 condominiums on the site of the former Colony Beach & Tennis Resort.

Each also has the latitude to judge the application’s request for tourism units based on building height, off-street parking, open space, recreation space, stormwater management, water and land setbacks and zoning compliance.

But the nine departures from the town zoning codes — requested amnesty for not adhering to the zoning codes — will be subject to scrutiny.

Most contentious of all these departures, said Town Planner Maika Arnold, who has overseen this application for development since its inception, could be one asking for an increased allowance in commercial space.

Unicorp is asking that the town

allow commercial space the size of 30% of the total floor area of the tourism units — zoning codes allow for 10%.

The developer has proposed 134,780 square feet of tourism space, allowing, by town codes, 13,478 square feet of commercial space. It wants 40,439 square feet.

That number accounts for more than 17,000 square feet of meeting space, including a 10,000-square-foot ballroom that grassroots organization Preserve Longboat has said is excessive.

A town-drafted ordinance for approving the PUD/ODP includes a few conditions for the meeting space, including that the hotel limit the number of guests for any

event at the hotel to 425 people, Arnold said.

The hotel would also be required to collaborate with the town on an event management plan, subject to approval by the town manager, for any gathering of more than 250 people, Arnold said of the draft ordinance.

Unicorp is also hoping to use the increased commercial space to build an 11,100-square-foot spa, multiple restaurants, a lounge and a bar.

Other departures include shorter setbacks from adjacent properties, a paved path along the beachfront for emergency vehicles and allowance for greater visibility of the buildings from Gulf of Mexico Drive. The application also includes appeals for greater floor area and living space and reduced open space.

Arnold said none of the departures Unicorp seeks is “a clear denial” — “with the conditions of approval and limiting the number of guests and the fact that [Whittall] is developing under the four-and-a-half units per acre [allowed by town zoning codes]” — in the town’s recommendation to town boards.

Town staff recommended denying Unicorp’s zoning code change that would remove density reductions for developers seeking tourism units in the PUD process.

Unicorp President Chuck Whittall withdrew his appeal to change the zoning codes after presenting the proposal to the town commission.

WHEN AND WHERE The Planning and Zoning Board has been given a full day on Feb. 20 and half a day on Feb. 21, if needed, at Town Hall to review the application for a 166-room, 78-condominium St. Regis Hotel and Residences.

The Feb. 20 meeting is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.

The board may recommend the commission approve or deny the application. It may also table the application for further research by town staff or the Orlandobased developer.

The application, if recommended in the affirmative or negative by the Planning and Zoning Board, is then scheduled for a full-day meeting March 5 in the Resort at Longboat Key Club Islandside John Ringling Room.

The developer also successfully petitioned the Town Commission (by a 5-2 vote) for a special meeting March 16 in the Resort at Longboat Key Club Islandside John Ringling Room for what it hopes will be the final approval of its application for developing the site of the former Colony Beach & Tennis Resort.

District 1 Commissioner Randy Clair and District 2 Commissioner George Spoll voted against the special meeting.

That just running for office on your celebrity does not qualify you for public office.

Clearly, that was Brennan’s potshot at Donald Trump.

But there is a certain degree of appeal to the idea. Indeed, the Brennan idea comes to mind when you look across the bay to the election next Tuesday for Florida House District 72.

Three first-time candidates — first time for any public office — are running to fill the seat of Republican Alex Miller, who resigned late last year, after having served less than a year.

Miller’s district encompasses a sliver of southern Manatee County and a large swatch of northern Sarasota County, essentially the city of Sarasota and all of Siesta Key. It has been a Republican district.

But increasingly over the past decade Democrats and NPAs have become a serious threat —Republicans make up 44.1% of registered voters; Democrats, 43.1%; and non-party affiliates (NPAs), 12.6%. Add in Democrats’ hate for Trump as motivation, they are hoping they can take another seat, albeit at the state level.

Surprisingly, none of the likely candidates for this seat stepped in — e.g.

Sarasota County Commissioner Paul Caragiulo; former Sarasota County Commissioners Carolyn Mason or Nora Patterson; former Sarasota City Commissioner Fredd Atkins; or even Ray Pilon, who held the seat before Miller.

EARNEST, WELL-MEANING

Filling the vacuum? The three rookie politicians: Republican James Buchanan, son of six-term U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan; Democrat Margaret Good, a Sarasota lawyer; and Libertarian Alison Foxall, a 29-year-old owner of a marketing business.

Let’s be clear: If you can wipe away all of the usual nastiness and ugliness that turns political campaigns into toxic oil spills, the three candidates for District 72 are decent, earnest, well-meaning people who want to do good.

Their challenge is to sell their character, political philosophies and ideas. But what makes that all the more difficult, if not impossible, are the standard tactics of the two major political parties’ machines.

Indeed, the Republican and Democratic parties are doing what they always do — turning their party’s candidates into hackneyed, unlikable political caricatures. If elected, the party machines tell voters, either Buchanan or Good would destroy the world with their allegedly extremist philosophies.

Democratic political action committees incessantly attempt to paint Buchanan as a climate-change denier, while Republican PACs are slopping on Good the goo of being a supporter of sanctuary cities. (Good actually has expressed opposition to state legislation that would penalize cities and counties if they don’t fully cooperate with federal immigration authorities.)

The effects of the bombardment of negative campaign mailers and TV ads are a growing disgust among voters with politics altogether. This is making more and more voters either look for an alternative to the two parties or give up and not vote at all.

Indeed, Foxall, the Libertarian, told us, voters have buoyed her optimism for a possible victory. As she has canvassed the district, many voters have expressed their willingness to consider an alternative to the major party candidates. “It doesn’t matter what my positions are; people are gravitating toward me because I’m different, I’m positive.”

Foxall, for sure, is a long shot. But when you assess the three candidates, she is a refreshing departure.

STANDARD ISSUE

Consider the candidates’ political philosophies.

Good is a standard-issue liberal.

Read her issue positions on her website. They’re the usual compendium of platitudes; calls for more, bigger government; more government regulation; less freedom and free enterprise. To wit: “Margaret knows that we cannot continue to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, cut Medicaid and limit patient choice … She will fight to expand Medicaid,” she states. She opposes school choice via charter schools and vouchers. She says she “will work to ban fracking and will hold accountable the big corporations that keep endangering our wetlands.”

She wants to increase state spending on “workforce development” and provide small businesses “with incentives to foster growth” — whatever that means. And she lists two of her issue priorities as “reproductive rights” and “LGBTQ+.”

Buchanan, likewise, is standard Republican: “limiting regulation and keeping our taxes low … We must end sanctuary cities and put a stop to illegal immigrants … allow the free market to improve access to quality (health) care” and “competition to ensure affordable prices.” Like his father, knowing how Sarasotans feel about oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, Buchanan opposes drilling.

In contrast is Foxall. She fits the Libertarian label — which we would describe as a common-sense embracing of individual freedom over government interference. Yes, Foxall believes in decriminalizing marijuana. “Why not, it’s their business,” she says. If she had a magic wand, she would separate education from the state. But she knows that’s not realistic. She favors giving parents more choice. “I’d rather see the money in the hands of parents” than in vouchers … “The role of Medicaid should shrink; deregulate the health care industry, and eventually we won’t need Medicaid.”

This one is a truth that all Libertarians embrace: “Health care is a service,” Foxall says. “No one is entitled to someone else’s labor.”

She opposes subsidies for economic development, sports stadiums and tourism promotion. She has a concealed-carry permit. “If you’ve served your time, you should have your rights restored.”

‘A THINKING BRAIN’

The more you talk to Foxall, the more you see she would offer a fresh, independent alternative to the DemocratRepublican dogma. She acknowledges she’s not a seasoned political veteran, although she cites experience working on other Libertarians’ campaigns. “David versus Goliath,” she says, smiling. “But I have a thinking brain.”

Foxall is introvert by nature. She described herself as a Booker High School student “as a quiet kid and didn’t engage much. I played a lot of basketball, flag football and gravitated toward physical activities. Sometimes I wonder how I even fell into libertarianism. But here I am!”

She brushes off the criticism that, if elected and being the only Libertarian in the Legislature, she would have little say or influence for her district’s taxpayers. How would you maneuver? she is asked. “Diplomacy.”

Given the exasperating, depressing climate that engulfs elections and the making of public policy, and given the bromidic, banal dogma of the major party candidates, it would be refreshing to send an independent alternative to Tallahassee. Let’s hope District 72 voters are willing to embrace that message.

I would like to thank those bicyclists that pay attention to Ordinance 87-25 that requires cyclists to ring their bell when passing pedestrians.

Unfortunately, the majority do not. I have seen many close calls.

How hard is it to ring the bell or shout out “passing on your left?”

The conscientious even let them know there are one or two bikes right behind them.

Perhaps a reminder might help prevent an avoidable accident.

The Sarasota County Area Transit bus route that serves Longboat Key will be eliminated starting in fiscal year 2019, pending final approval after a public hearing.

The change comes as part $5.4 million in cuts to recurring expenses, approved Jan. 31 by the County Commission. Fiscal year 2019 starts Oct. 1.

A group of endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtles have left their temporary home at Mote Marine Laboratory.

On Feb. 2, Mote released eight Kemp’s ridley sea turtles from the Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Hospital. The turtles were transported to New Smyrna Beach on the east coast of Florida to be released, Mote said.

Before heading out to sea, the turtles were fitted with a passive integrated transponder tag, which gives each turtle a barcode identification number.

In December, 10 turtles from the New England Aquarium in Massachusetts were transported to Mote for rehabilitation. NEAQ has room to care for 80 turtles but gets hundreds a day, so Mote joined other Florida aquariums to

Route 18 extends between the north end of Longboat Key and downtown Sarasota and makes five stops: at First Street and Lemon Avenue, St. Armands Circle, Mote Marine Laboratory, Harbourside Drive and Bay Isles Parkway.

On average, 62 people ride the bus daily. The route makes 14 round trips a day, beginning at 6:05 a.m. and ending at 7:50 p.m.

It will take about a year for the change to go into effect, as SCAT has to conduct an Equity Analysis, which will include gathering input at public hearings and final approval from the commission.

“However, please be assured

that the SCAT staff is looking at alternatives models and methods to provide service to Longboat Key in place of Route 18,” Sarasota County Director of Community & Intergovernmental Relations Rob Lewis wrote Feb. 1 in an email to Harmer.

The move will save the county nearly $140,000 annually.

The Longboat bus route is one of three being cut, including one that runs between the airport and North Port, and one that serves Venice and South Venice. Each averages about 60 daily riders.

The Saturday schedule will also be reduced to the same operating schedule as Sundays, which varies by route.

After two months of treatment, eight of the 10 turtles were cleared for release. One endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle and one threatened green sea turtle from the bunch remain at Mote.

“It is always our objective to rehabilitate as quickly and safely as possible so that these animals can return to their natural environment,” Lynne Byrd, Mote’s rehabilitation and medical care coordinator said in the statement.

“Sea turtles are resilient creatures and this group has responded well to treatment. We look forward to releasing the remaining two turtles from the original 10 in the near future.”

Lido Key residents have expressed concerns about how storms could affect the island’s shoreline.

City explores Lido shoreline committee Lido Key residents hope a new group could better monitor the status of the barrier island’s beaches.

A judge has not yet weighed in on Sarasota’s plan to renourish Lido Key with sand from Big Pass, but City Manager Tom Barwin isn’t waiting for a decision to take action designed to help preserve the barrier island’s shores.

In January, Barwin spoke at a Lido Key Residents Association meeting. There, he heard about residents’ ongoing anxiety regarding the status of their

shoreline. Shortly after that meeting, he reached out to the association with an idea for addressing that anxiety.

His proposal: a citizen-led shoreline protection committee.

The goal, he said, was to create a better link of communication between Lido residents and Sarasota’s staff regarding the status of Lido’s beaches. The group could keep an eye out for any changes and better explore opportunities for making sure the island’s shoreline was well maintained.

Even if the proposed Big Pass dredge is approved and funded — creating a 50-year plan for managing the Lido shoreline alongside the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers — Barwin said shoreline protection will remain a long-term challenge for city officials.

“We want to be sure we are as far ahead of the curve as we can be — embracing the activity that’s going to inevitably have to occur here to be sure we can keep our facilities safe, sound and above water,” Barwin said.

He met with a group of Lido Key residents Jan. 29 to pitch the concept. Although the idea is still in a preliminary phase, he said the group was receptive. He’s optimistic city staff and Lido residents will be able to find a useful model for monitoring and protecting the barrier island’s shoreline.

“I think we were all in agreement that we, collectively, need to be more proactive,” Barwin said.

“From monitoring to measuring to communicating and working overtime to be sure we stay ahead of the challenges coming.”

Lido Key Residents Association President Carl Shoffstall agreed the concept could become a useful vehicle for staying on top of shoreline-related issues. He said the association’s beach committee was determining what the final product should look like.

Barwin said he was open to suggestions for how the committee would function within the purview of city government. A formal committee with an assigned staff liaison could meet regularly and report directly to the Sarasota City Commission. Or, a less formal group of residents could meet among themselves and check in periodically with city officials.

“We want to be sure we are as far ahead of the curve as we can be.”

Despite a lack of detail, Shoffstall was also optimistic about what the group could produce.

“I think it’s going to be good — and going down the road, I think it’s something that’s going to be necessary,” Shoffstall said.

Barwin agreed that any committee would need to be a longterm institution to deal with ongoing issues related to climate change. Although the city manager expressed a desire to ultimately address shoreline issues on a regional basis, he felt compelled to get started on ways to help the most affected segment of the city as soon as possible.

“We’ll start now, and hopefully eventually move forward with others in our region,” Barwin said.

“Ten years from now, I think people will be very happy something like this started.”

Longboat police purchase traffic monitoring device TAKEAWAYS FROM BROADWAY

Longboat Key Police Department hopes a new piece of technology, no bigger than a large lunchbox, will help focus its efforts on traffic enforcement.

A traffic-monitoring device, which the department bought for $2,500 using money donated at a Resort at Longboat Key Club putting challenge, has been measuring traffic patterns and speeds on Broadway Street for a week, said Police Chief Pete Cumming.

And it’s not a camera, in that it doesn’t record images for the department to use — it just records traffic data, Cumming said. There’s not even a lens on the device.

“It’s just technology,” Cumming said. “It’s more efficient than putting an officer out there.”

The department used a similar device in November to monitor traffic near the intersection of Poinsettia Avenue and Cedar Street in the Village.

District 5 Commissioner Ed Zunz, in an email dated Nov. 29, said he had received complaints about speeding cars in the area and had asked then-Town Manager Dave Bullock to do something about it.

The device monitored 625 cars in six days with an average speed of 14 miles per hour, according to Zunz’s November email.

The success Cumming said he saw with the device he’d borrowed from the Sheriff’s Office convinced him the department needed one of its own. The technology will help the department verify, or debunk, complaints about speeding traffic on the island.

“It would better the island by telling me where I need to put my resources more accurately,” Cumming said. “If [speeding is] a problem, now I don’t have to worry about what time of day it’s happening.”

Longboater works to preserve Cortez history Whitney Beach resident Herman Kruegle works to preserve the history of Cortez Village and its fishing legacy.

Cortez Village has been a commercial fishing village since its inception in the 1880s.

Now, Whitney Beach resident Herman Kruegle is working to preserve and present the village’s history.

Kruegle is on the board of The Florida Institute for Saltwater Heritage, or FISH, which is dedicated to the promotion, education and preservation of Cortez’s commercial fishing and maritime cultures, its website said.

Kruegle’s goal is to get funding for a walking trail throughout the FISH Preserve, ending at the adjacent Florida Maritime Museum.

“It would be a trail in the sense that there would be markers saying what things are,” he said. “It’s pretty much grass, and it will probably, for awhile, remain that way.”

FISH leaders would like a building constructed, the “Cortez Heritage Center,” on the preserve that will serve as a welcome center for FISH, a site to store restored historic boats and be the entry point for the Cortez Historic Trail.

Three boats have been restored that need a stronger structure to house them.

Kruegle said they are really looking for funding for the building. He estimates it will cost about $100,000.

Kruegle’s determination comes from two sources. He’s always been interested in woodworking. Originally, he joined FISH to work on boat restoration projects and learn about the history of the Cortez fishing village.

“As I got to know Cortez more and more, and the people, [I saw] how hard they work,” he said. “I wanted to help out in some way, and the idea I mentioned [the trail] really came from Mary Fullford Green.”

Which brings him to his second source of motivation: Green is 92. Kruegle knew she couldn’t carry this project on her own, so when she asked for help, he volunteered.

A short walk over the bridge, visitors would find themselves outside of the Bratton Store, which sits next to the Florida Maritime Museum.

The ideal trail path would include an entrance at FISH Boatworks on 116th Street. There, people could park and proceed to a welcome booth. The trail would begin at Boatworks, continue to the historic boat shed, which isn’t built yet, and carry on to the Cortez Historical Society, also known as the Cortez Cultural Center. The Cortez Historical Society is on FISH property.

From there, visitors could cross a short bridge to the Bratton Store and the Florida Maritime Museum. The trail could be walked in the opposite direction, too.

Boatworks is a facility used for restoring wooden boats up to

25-30 feet. On the trail, visitors would be able to visit the building and see all the equipment and tools used to restore those boats.

The historical society building is home to materials used in period clothing and tidbits from Cortez’s early residents.

The first stop over the bridge would be the Bratton Store, which was salvaged from the only building left in the wake of a 1921 hurricane, Kruegle said.

Finally, visitors would find themselves at the Florida Maritime Museum.

“The Maritime Museum is on Manatee County property, and so it’s really separate from FISH, but

we wanted to include it in this trail so that people can go through and get a history of as much as they can,” Kruegle said.

Kruegle said he has found that not many people are aware of the history of Cortez or FISH, so this trail, unlike other reserves Kruegle has seen, will showcase history more than anything.

“What I have seen being unique about the FISH Preserve is that it has all these different buildings with this history in it,” Kruegle said. “Other reserves … the others are pretty much walking, canoe, things like that, and this would be a destination where you would get the history of the village.”

Town Manager Tom Harmer has been on the job since early December, and one of his priorities since the new year began is explaining a key ballot initiative.

In addition to choosing a new town commission on March 20, Longboat Key voters will cast ballots on a new town charter and a nearly $6 million bond issue to renovate the town’s fire stations.

His next stop in his circuit of explanation is planned for 11:30 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 15, at the Portofino Restaurant and Grill as part of the Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key’s monthly luncheons.

The proposed charter is full of revisions from the existing town document, most of which are what town staff have called “administrative” or “clean-up” changes.

For example, town records could be stored digitally, the town manager could appoint an assistant, and the vice mayor could succeed the mayor in the event of his or her absence if voters approve the proposed charter.

The proposed charter also suggests deferring ethics investigations to a state board, yielding election date authority to a county Supervisor of Elections

The other referendum question is about the town’s two firehouses — at 2162 Gulf of Mexico Drive and 5490 Gulf of Mexico Drive — which are in need of updates.

The south station doesn’t meet modern firehouse codes nor provide separate locker rooms for men and women. The north station needs ventilation upgrades and additional storage space.

Voter approval of a $5.85 million bond issue, which could cost a homeowner with a home $500,000 of assessed value anywhere between $6 and $16 per year, would pay for rebuilding the south station and renovating the northern station.

Lecture series heads to The Paradise Center RCLLA SERIES ON LONGBOAT

For the first time, Ringling College Lifelong Learning Academy is bringing lectures to The Paradise Center on Longboat Key. The Paradise Center Executive Director Suzy Brenner said it happened in a roundabout way through networking. Originally, four lectures were planned for The Paradise Center, but when directors at RCLLA reached out to their lecturers, they got an overwhelming response from those wanting to present on Longboat Key, Brenner said.

The first lecture will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon Friday, at The Paradise Center, 6200 Gulf of Mexico Drive. The first lecture — “The Vision of Four Presidents: Washington, Lincoln, Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt” — will be hosted by history teacher Monroe Brett.

“We’re hopeful it’ll get a good turnout,” Brenner said. “ It’s eight weeks, and they are pretty different lectures, so it might vary week to week.”

Attendees can attend a single lecture for $15 or pay $55 for four in February or $55 for four in March.

The Longboat Key Foundation aims to enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors of the island.

It’s this mission that Jeff Mayers, the new chairman of the board of advisers for the foundation, wants to continue in 2018.

Mayers, general manager of The Resort at Longboat Key Club since 2013, took over for Bob Simmons in September.

“Bob taught me some great things as a leader,” Mayers said.

“He was engaged. He would always listen to what the board members were saying, he was involved in projects … so he could lead us down the path to lead us to the right decision.”

Simmons said he would volunteer for anything the foundation needs, but right now, he is just an interested resident.

“I’m getting older, and I’m trying to cut back on some things, and we put a lot of time and effort into getting the foundation up and running and pursuing the Center for Healthy Living,” he said.

“And, now we’re moving toward the Center for the Arts, Culture and Education, so I thought this was probably a good time to pass the responsibility to Jeff. Jeff was a very good board member from the beginning, so it just seemed like the right time.”

During Simmons’ tenure of almost five years, he helped establish what he calls two big accomplishments for the foundation — the Center for Healthy Living and planting “the seeds” for the coming Longboat Key Center for the Arts, Culture and Education.

“Initially, when he [Simmons] started, it was a brand new board,” Mayers said. “So, you had to create the foundation and then start working on the projects. He played a significant role in all of those.”

Simmons initially stepped

down in July, so Mayers has had some time to adjust in his new role. Simmons is confident Mayers will lead the foundation successfully.

“He’s a terrific guy, and he will do an excellent job,” Simmons said. “Considering he has a fulltime job, it’s a challenge to do both, but he’s capable and he’ll do a great job.”

Continuing in 2018, Mayers is going to focus on projects that can enhance the quality of life for those on Longboat Key. Mayers said the board is currently in the process of exploring other projects that would be beneficial to the island.

In 1993, Al Hixon and his bandmates played at a funeral at Longboat Island Chapel.

At the end of the service, the late Rev. Jim Marsh asked if the group would come back on a Sunday morning and perform for the congregation.

They did, and soon it became an annual event.

For the past 25 years, Hixon and various bandmates have been filling the Longboat Island Chapel with the smooth sound of jazz on the second Sunday in February.

The Rev. Vincent Carroll once told Hixon the “Jazz Sunday,” as the event has come to be known, is more attended than the chapel’s Christmas or Easter services.

This year’s performance, scheduled for the 10 a.m. service on Sunday, Feb. 11, is planned to be the last.

This year’s theme is “Jazz thru the Ages.”

Tony Swain, who has played alongside Hixon at the event for the past 25 years, organizes the program for Jazz Sunday.

“Examples [will be] starting maybe with the Hollers and the music of New Orleans and then bring it up to influence by Hollywood,” he said.

Swain said he has enjoyed playing at the chapel over the past two decades. He writes scripts that go along with theme.

Over the years, Hixon has learned that the best part of performing is determining what the audience wants to hear and watching them respond.

“It’s not just the notes that are played,” Hixon said. “It’s the void in between that is equally important.”

on piano, bass, drums, trumpet, clarinet, trombone and a singer.

This year, two new singers will join the group. It’s not always the same musicians, but Hixon and Swain have performed all 25 years.

Over the 25-year tenure, Hixon has worked with four ministers; The Revs. Bill Friederich, Vincent Carroll, Ken Gill, William Grossman and Jim Marsh.

For those who want to continue hearing Hixon, he has a weekly schedule. On Sundays, he’ll be at The Sandbar Restaurant; on Mondays at 15 South; and on Tuesdays at The Resort at Longboat Key Club’s Sands Point Restaurant.

Hixon’s jazz career began around the age of 7 when he received his first set of drums. He played professionally from seventh grade through high school then college.

Swain studied music at Florida State University and did graduate work at the Manhattan School of Music. Locally, he has played with the Florida Symphonic Band, now known as the Sarasota Concert Band, and at The Players Theatre.

Frank “Tommy” Arthur Jr., 67, of Longboat Key, Fla. and Hickory, N.C., was a special soul, loving husband and loyal friend who never met a stranger.

Tommy leaves behind his wife, Nancy, sisters Nancy Crews and husband Jim, Carolyn Oldham, many nieces and nephews — and too many friends to count. He was pre-deceased by stepmother Carolyn Arthur, sister Jessica Murray, and brothers Richard Arthur and Donald Arthur.

His gentle spirit, Carolina drawl and infectious laugh will live on with all who knew him. Affectionately known as “Bird” by his multitude of North Carolina friends, his easy-going manner and even temperament endeared him to all with whom he connected. Tommy was known for his numerous and witty short descriptive phrases – or “Bird-isms” – one never knew what he may come up with next. He passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Jan. 24, leaving a huge hole in the hearts of all he touched. Born Jan. 11, 1951, in Charlotte, N.C., to the late Mary Jeannette Nabors and Frank Thomas Arthur Sr., Tommy graduated from Hickory High School and attended Appalachia State University in Boone, N.C. A Mountaineer football fan, Tommy was happiest in the Carolina mountains, on Lake Hickory and the shores of Longboat Key, where he shared the outdoors and good times with his beloved soul mate Nancy L. Stafford, and his circle of devoted friends, whom he considered his family.

Lisa Jo Hagerman, (June 23, 1956 - Jan. 27, 2018), 61, of Sarasota, Fla., passed away on Jan. 27, 2018.

Lisa was born in Columbus, Ohio, to Richard and Esther Miller (now Esther Bates). In 1974, Lisa moved to St. Petersburg, Fla. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in marketing and an MBA from the University of South Florida. She moved to Sarasota in 1983 and started Secretarial Services Plus, a one-stop professional image and business development company.

She was an active member of Women Owners Network, serving as president for two years.

Lisa was well-known in the community for her marketing expertise and her beautiful smile. Lisa volunteered for many years with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

She served as district secretary-treasurer for the Sertoma Clubs of Southwest Florida and chairman, president, secretary, and newsletter director for the Sertoma Club of Greater Sarasota. Lisa was the first woman to receive the prestigious “Sertoman of the Year” award in 2000. Lisa served as chairman and co-chair of several committees for Habitat for Humanity Sarasota. She was a founder and facilitator of Women With Connections LWR. Lisa is survived by her mother Esther Bates, son Bradley Hagerman of Sarasota, Fla., daughter Shelly Hagerman (Shaw-

fter one of Longboat Key’s monthly Physics Club meetings, Pat Anderson happened to stroll out with Peter Seats.

In his British accent, he said he loved the club. Anderson asked him why.

“Well, he said, ‘If I talked about these subjects that we talk about at any of the cocktail parties around here, they would think I was in my cups,’” Anderson said.

The club began 10 years ago after a conversation Leonard Biberman overheard between his wife and Charles Miller’s wife.

Biberman heard that Miller was a physicist, a field Biberman was always interested in, so they met with Pat Anderson at The Blue Dolphin Cafe on St. Armands Circle, and the club was born.

They talked about Planck constant, which was named after Max Planck and is an important value in quantum physics that links the amount of energy a photon carries to its electromagnetic wave.

Today, the club has grown to a roster of about 60 members.

“We have chemists, we have geologists, computer science, doctors … it’s boundless, the talk

of physics, when you look at it, so we don’t really keep it to physics club,” Anderson said. “It’s more like a science club.”

The club meets monthly throughout the year for lunch presentations. Members serve as speakers, except for an occasional guest speaker.

“This is part of being a member of the Physics Club,” Anderson said. “I interview everybody, and they have to be able to give talks. We don’t have room to have people just come and listen, so it’s mostly our members that give the talks, and there is huge diversity.”

The club has proved to be somewhat of a haven for science enthusiasts. In the mix of cocktail parties, tennis matches and other

events that fill Longboat Key residents’ social calendars, science rarely has a place among common conversation. Physics Club, though, fills that void, much like Seats explained to Anderson.

“I love Longboat Key, but there’s not a science and technical aspect to it, except for the Physics Club,” Frank Sulzman said. “If you want to talk about business or the arts, everybody does that, but scientific and technical issues are fairly rare on the Key. Leonard and Pat have really found a home for people like us, who are interested in these things.”

Jim McGuire, who has been a member for four years, said it’s easy for people to think physics is a narrow field, but that isn’t true.

There is physics in medicine. It can tie into computer science. It plays into space exploration.

“It’s hard to say where physics began, but about a good a place as any is Isaac Newton, who developed what we call the laws of motion, and he defined it as a branch of natural philosophy,” Biberman said. “It’s a very fundamental science. It affects our whole comprehension of the physical world.”

When club members present

at the lunch meetings, they don’t only talk about their background and expertise areas. Sometimes, members teach themselves something new for a presentation.

“It can be challenging because they’re all bright people, and it forces you to work a little bit hard to learn things,” Sulzman said.

“They say if you want to learn something you should teach it, so it’s a good way to force yourself to go through the discipline of learning stuff you’re naturally interested in, but this pushes you to get to a different level.”

Sometimes, members such as Biberman will read a book on a subject that interests them and teach themselves enough for a presentation. Biberman gave such a talk on global warming, and found it challenging.

“As soon as the questions started, I realized most of the people in the audience knew more about it than I did,” he said.

But it’s those questions and challenges that keep the group stimulated and close-knit.

“We can all talk about things that most people don’t understand or really care about, and we learn from each other,” Anderson said.

t was a sellout crowd of about 3,500 runners who dashed through the streets of Sarasota before sunrise on Feb. 4 for the fourth annual Sarasota Music Half Marathon and Rockin’ 10K. With streets blocked and lanes reduced for vehicles, the runners took off from the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, across the Ringling Bridge and back, then through neighborhoods along Bayfront Drive, Orange Avenue and Osprey Avenue.

Joining the typical corps of well-wishers, volunteers and first-responders were 20

bands, including the Sarasota High Mighty Sailor Marching Band.

About 2,500 athletes took part in the half-marathon; 1,000 took part in the 10K. Winners were: Blake Riley of Sarasota and Katie Waters of Sarasota in the halfmarathon. Riley’s time was 1 hour, 14 minutes and 52 seconds. Waters covered the course in 1:28.23.

The 10K winners were Felipe Nazar (34:38) and Andrea Burdett (40:13).
