arbara Rowe didn’t think her underground-utilities assessment was fair.

The Bayport Beach & Tennis Club resident said she and her husband derived no benefit from removing overhead wires in her neighborhood — there aren’t any.

She’d already been assessed some $2,400 for the Gulf of Mexico Drive project to bury utility cables. The only overhead wires near her condominium at 520 Bayport Way, she said, are on Kingfisher Lane, a private drive obscured by trees behind her home.

But those wires are within 55 feet of her property, costing her and her husband, by the town’s methodology, an additional $3,584.98 over the 30-year repayment schedule of the project, Rowe told town commissioners at their Nov. 16 workshop meeting.

“Had we known that our already undergrounded property could be assessed over $3,500, we would have never approved the referendum for this [neighborhood] project,” Rowe told commissioners.

Rowe was one of many Bayport Beach & Tennis Club residents who sought a neighborhood review from the Town Commission for the northernmost condominium associations. Those two plots were assessed thousands of dollars more than the other three lots because of their 55-foot abutment to Kingfisher Lane.

Many residents who appeared before the commission said this was unfair. And after analyzing the situation at the Bayport Beach & Tennis Club and finding it unique on the island, Town Manager Dave Bullock and his team of consultants agreed.

case, and I am very, very cautious about making exceptions,” Bullock said. “But I think in this case, after looking at it in some detail, if the commission would choose to do that [give special exception to Bayport Beach & Tennis Club], there is some justification for it.”

The commission concurred, voting 6-1 to exempt Bayport.

SHIFTING COSTS

But this decision doesn’t mean the project to bury utility cables will cost any less. The money lost from Bayport Beach & Tennis Club, about $122,000, has to come from somewhere.

Bullock’s team of consultants took this into consideration and found that most properties on the island would see an approximate 1% increase in assessments from previous estimates.

from the point of view of the facts and not the impact of the finances of others,” said District 2 Commissioner George Spoll. “I think factually, it would be fair to remove them from this special category.”

But as Mayor Terry Gans warned when the commission debated the exception for the first time at its Nov. 6 regular meeting, this special case could be a slippery slope.

Longboat Harbour condominium residents have sent at least 13 emails to the Town Commission requesting an exception for underground fiber installation, as of Monday morning.

Owners argue they already paid for underground fiber when they bought their condominiums.

Maureen Mastroieni, a resident at 4410 Exeter Drive, wrote commissioners about an “apparent error” in her assessment.

The town is planning to meet with Longboat Harbour residents to explain that the fiber assessment is for town operations like emergency service communications and utility services, Bullock said.

“We were under the impression that the town would not be coming onto our property and installing fiber,” Mastroieni said in an interview. “It seemed to me that maybe it was some kind of glitch.”

Longboat Key residents approved two referendums in the past two years allowing the town to seek bonds to remove all overhead wires on the island and bury them.

Supporters argued that replacing overhead wires with underground utilities would decrease the costs of storm restoration and tree trimming, increase reliability, reduce power system damage in the event of severe weather and improve aesthetics and property values.

Opponents reasoned the cost of the project, $42.1 million islandwide, would be four to five times more expensive than Florida Power & Light’s plan to replace Gulf of Mexico Drive poles with sturdier ones, that repairing underground wires would be five to 10 times more costly, problems with the system would be harder to locate and in the event of flooding, all water would have to recede before repairs could be made.

The first of these votes in November 2015 approved the town’s use of no more than $25.25 million in taxpayer money to bury all utilities on Gulf of Mexico Drive. This ballot question passed 62.6% to 37.4%.

Then, in March 2016, voters approved a project to bury neighborhood utilities project by a of 59.98% to 40.02% margin, allowing the town to issue bonds of no more than $23.85 million for the project. The town uses a methodology to assess what property owners pay for this project.

If all goes according to plan, the town anticipates all utilities across the island will be buried by July 2021.

The qualification period ended at noon on Monday.

Election Day in Longboat Key is March 20, and the last day to register to vote in that election is Feb. 23. Sarasota County voters will also cast ballots that day in a school district tax referendum.

Now police say they’ve built a case to prove by a preponderance of evidence that the condo was used to commit a felony — which, if backed up in court, gives the town authority to seize the property under state law.

Natt has pleaded not guilty to the felony charge of video voyeurism, court records show.

Florida law permits an arresting agency to pursue forfeiture action against a property it believes was “used as an instrumentality in the commission of any felony,” according to the statute.

The validity of such a case is not dependent on a conviction.

The condo is valued at $170,850, according to the Manatee County Appraiser. Tuesday’s proceedings are scheduled at 2:30 p.m. before Judge Gilbert A. Smith Jr. in Room 5E, 1051 Manatee Ave. W., in Bradenton.

A hearing was scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in a Manatee County courtroom in Longboat Key’s legal attempt to seize a condo connected with a videovoyeurism charge, court records show.

The town last week filed documents in the 12th Circuit Court, beginning the proceedings ultimately designed to take possession of a one-bedroom, two-bath condo at 623 Cedars Court.

The town charter requires the Commission appoint a Charter Review Committee at least once every 10 years to review the charter and propose amendments to the town’s foundational document. Longboat Key voters may have the chance to replace the twodecade-old town charter in one mark of their pens at the election booth next year.

The intention of this approach, which town commissioners discussed and approved at their Nov. 13 workshop and special meetings, is to avoid confusing voters with multiple referendum ques-

tions that would be necessary if the town amended the existing town charter, as policy makers had planned in past months.

The former approach proposed four referendum questions: three to address “policy” issues, and a fourth bundling 26 “administrative” changes.

This new charter includes just one of the three policy changes commissioners approved at their workshop meeting in October — allowing the town to issue rev-

enue bonds of $5 million or less without a referendum.

Commissioners rejected changing commissioner term limits from three two-year terms to two three-year terms over uncertainty about how the new rules would be implemented.

They also dismissed eliminating preliminary elections for fear that if a runoff were necessary after a March election, the Commission would not have a quorum necessary to choose a mayor and vice mayor.

Commissioners also voted to keep references to the Planning and Zoning Board and the Investment Advisory Committee in the proposed charter, both of which were removed from the document by the charter review committee as part of its 26 “administrative” changes.

the formerly approved referendum methodology at the Nov. 6 regular commission meeting, pointing out that ballot questions must “contain a clear and concise statement describing the substance of the proposed amendment,” according to the town charter.

Bundling 26 amendments into one question and meeting the “clear and concise” requirements outlined by the charter in a 15 word title and 75 word explanatory statement, as required by Florida law, is difficult to do, Mooney-Portale said.

That left policy makers with two options. They could either ask voters if they wanted to adopt a new charter including all of the proposed changes, or direct Mooney-Portale to write a referendum for each amendment in as few questions as possible. Commissioners chose the latter.

A week later, at the Nov. 13 workshop meeting, MooneyPortale presented commissioners with 17 questions that, in the interim, she consolidated from 28 proposed charter changes.

But commissioners decided, after debating the questions, that with a referendum to reconstruct Longboat firehouses and at least two commission elections, that it would be best to keep the ballot short and avoid confusing voters with too many questions. Commissioners reached a 4-3 consensus for this approach.

Outreach about the proposed charter change will be key to informing voters about the town’s intentions, commissioners said.

The ordinance containing the proposed referendum question will be heard again at the Dec. 4 regular commission meeting.

irsten Hazelton, a secondgrade teacher at Southside Elementary School in Sarasota, gave her students an assignment for Veterans Day. One of those students, Rhys Parry, 7, wrote a letter to his uncle, a captain in the Marine Corps Raiders, its special forces division.

Young Parry thanked his uncle for serving. And by way of every child’s uncanny ability to state simple, direct truths and profound common sense, young Parry wrote: “Freedom is the best thing in the world.”

If only every American took that to heart. Especially today. What a tragedy that so many don’t appreciate that truth. They take their freedom for granted, oblivious to this extraordinary gift.

So be thankful today. Block out the noise; the national politics; the cultural strife; and the depravity that has consumed us in 2017. As you gather with family and friends for your traditional Thanksgiving feast, we take this space this week to urge our readers to take stock, at least for a few minutes.

If you think deeply enough about the meaning of Thanksgiving, there is so much more to this day than being thankful for the bounty on our tables. So much more to Thanksgiving than the story of the Plymouth Colony Pilgrims celebrating the harvest with the Wampanoag Indians in 1621, or thanking God for the end of the drought in 1622.

To a great extent, the first Thanksgivings were the celebratory culminations of the miraculous journey of a small band of Europeans in search of a place to be free — to be free to practice their religion and their way of life.

That was their raison d’etre — freedom of religion. And today, you can say that principle is the fundamental rock, the bedrock, the perpetual birthstone of America.

And yet, here we are, almost 400 years later, continuing to fight for that right and principle. And if you think about that, consider also what it will require. Take inspiration from the courage of the Pilgrims and their long, harrowing journey from England to Holland to Plymouth Rock.

We’ve made a tradition of re-telling the story and roots of Thanksgiving, because the story of the Pilgrims helps reset our compass.

It reminds us how we came to be — the New Hope in the New World. It reminds us of why we came to be. It reminds us of the price our ancestors paid to be free and to be free to worship as they wished. It reminds us to be thankful for all the blessings we have. And it reminds us that Rhys Parry is right: “Freedom is the best thing in the world.” …

What drove the Pilgrims to America

T

he roots of Thanksgiving Day go far deeper than the story of the Pilgrims at Plymouth Colony in 1621. Yes, they were thankful to God for their bountiful harvest and their newfound Indian friends.

But if you can imagine yourself in the shoes of any of the original 102 Pilgrims who sailed for America, a land unknown, and who survived that tumultuous journey, followed by two years of near starvation, your gratitude simply for being alive would put a whole new perspective on Thanksgiving. It was far more than being thankful for a big fall harvest and feast.

Seldom, if ever, do we focus in our history texts on the details that compelled the Pilgrims — also known as Separatists, Puritans and Calvinists — to set sail. The textbooks typically mention they fled religious persecution. But especially today, in this world of widespread and horrific religious persecutions, it’s instructive to remember the details of why the Pilgrims mustered the courage to cross the Unknown Ocean for freedom — for religious freedom.

In his 500-page account of Plymouth Plantation, Gov. William Bradford wrote how his fellow Calvinists in England became “hunted and persecuted on every side, so as their former afflictions were but as flea-bitings in comparison of these which now came upon them.

“For some were taken and clapped up in prison, others had their houses beset and watched night and day, and hardly escaped their hands; and most were faine to flee and leave their houses and habitations, and the means of their livelehood,” Bradford wrote.

After a year of this and meeting in secret to practice their worship of God, they saw “they could no longer continue in this condition,” and “resolved to get over into Holland.” The people of Amsterdam, they had heard, accepted the free practice of religion.

MISERY WORSE THAN DEATH

But sailing 200 miles to Amsterdam was no small matter. It was a monumental ordeal. Bradford describes the fear many of the Separatists had of leaving England, as bad as it was, as “a misery worse than death.”

“But these things did not dismay them — for their desires were set on the ways of God and to enjoy his ordinances,” Bradford wrote.

The trip to Holland was horrible for many. Chartered ship operators, once at sea with the Separatists, robbed them; ransacked their belongings; molested many of the women; and then sailed back into the original port and turned over the Separatists to local au-

thorities, who then imprisoned them.

Amazingly, the Separatists didn’t give up. “Some few shrunk at these first conflicts and sharp beginnings,” Bradford wrote, “yet many more came on with fresh courage and greatly animated others. And in the end, notwithstanding all these storms of opposition, they all got over at length.”

For 12 years, the Calvinist-Separatist-Pilgrims lived and practiced their religion in freedom and peace in Leyden, an area within Amsterdam where many of them became weavers.

And then the trouble began again.

Bradford wrote of “Arminians, who greatly molested the whole state”; and university professors and other preachers who began to slander the Pilgrims’ religious practices.

The tormenting rose to such a level that Bradford said some of his neighbors preferred being in prison in England than “this liberty in Holland, with these afflictions.”

Distressed by the increasing abuse, the Separatists’ elders began to look ahead. They believed within a few years they “were fearful either to be entrapped or surrounded by their enemies” and unable to flee.

DIFFICULT, BUT NOT INVINCIBLE

What’s more, they worried about their children. It was common for them to labor long hours in the mills, “their bodies bowed under the weight.” Many children also fell to the temptations of youthful “licentiousness” and were drawn into “extravagant and dangerous courses,” Bradford wrote. Parents saw “their posterity would be in danger to degenerate and be corrupted.”

At the same time, many of the Separatists looked outward and spoke among their neighbors of “advancing the gospel of the kingdom of Christ in those remote parts of the world,” Bradford wrote.

All three of these influences — persecution, the well-being of their families’ future generations and spreading God’s word — combined to motivate the Pilgrims to seek a new beginning. As they discussed their options, Bradford wrote, “It was answered … the difficulties were many, but not invincible.”

So they set sail to a land unknown.

Bradford wrote of “winds so fierce and the seas so high,” and the Mayflower “shroudly shaken” and leaky, raising the constant fear the ship would sink and they would perish at sea.

When they finally stepped on land in the Cape Cod harbor, Bradford wrote, the Pilgrims “fell upon their knees and blessed the God of heaven, who had brought them over the vast and furious ocean and delivered them from all the perils and miseries thereof.”

Pat Gussin debuts new book

LETTERS Former candidate endorses incumbent This is to inform all of you that I will not be a candidate for the At Large seat on the Longboat Key Town Commission. The story written in last week’s Longboat Observer did not reflect the statements I made to the Observer reporter, and I learned that reporter did not write the story about my withdrawal.

When I filed and qualified to run, no qualified candidate had put their name forward. I had several conversations with Irwin Pastor, who had not yet decided to run when I filed.

Irwin and I also concur that there is a great deal of important work to be done at the Planning and Zoning Board. We both hope Ken Schneier is successful in his run for commission, so remaining at Planning and Zoning to provide the institutional knowledge to new planning board members as well as a new director is critical.

Irwin and I agree on some critical issues coming forward such as the potential elimination of Planning and Zoning and the Investment Advisory Commission from the Town Charter, which we feel is a very bad idea. The rewrite of the Comprehensive Plan and the Zoning Ordinance and some important land use applications anticipated in the Town must be dealt with effectively for future generations. Thank goodness we see younger people coming to Longboat and we need more input from them.

Finally, I believe it is a horrible idea to waste money on a special election in January, and am amazed that no Commission in the past 20 years has corrected that waste of Town funds.

Clearly, Irwin is the most qualified candidate remaining in the at-large race, and I am sure he will be successful.

hen Pat Gussin talks about Nicole Nelson and Ahmed Masud, it sounds as if she’s talking about old friends.

She knows about their careers and family histories and how adorable their 5-year-old son is.

But these people aren’t her real-life friends. They are the characters in her newest, and seventh, book, “Come Home,” which made its debut Nov. 7. On Nov. 12, Gussin discussed and signed her book for readers at the Longboat Library.

The book follows Nicole Nelson and Ahmed Masud, who are married and partners in a plastic surgery practice. Their life is successful and happy with their son, Alex, but things are beginning to fall apart. Masud has faced some prejudice following 9/11 as an Arab man, malpractice lawsuits against him are piling up and his family in Cairo is pressuring him to return to Egypt permanently with his son.

Soon, Masud’s family demands his return because the Hosni Mubarak regime is threatened by protesters, and the Masud family owes their control of the Egyptian cotton empire to the regime.

“In a very weak moment, he decides to adhere to their wishes,” Gussin said.

While Nelson is in surgery, Masud runs away to Egypt, taking Alex with him.

What ensues is Nelson’s mission to get her family back.

“At the core, it’s a clash between cultures, the mom and dad and kid in the middle and families lined up on each side,” Gussin said.

Despite pleas from the crowd, Gussin wouldn’t share the ending, but she gave a hint.

“It’s devastating,” she said.

“When you’re the writer, you have to decide how to end it, and at the end of the day, there was no way it was going to end well.”

As unplanned as her writing, the social and political upheaval points in her book weren’t planned, either. However, she knows drama is a common denominator in her books. After all, “Come Home” is her second book involving a kidnapping, which is surprising even to her as a mother of six.

“As a mom, what could be more unimaginably horrible than a kid being taken?” she asked the crowd at the library.

Gussin, who co-owns Oceanview Publishing with her husband, Bob, never planned to be a writer, and neither of them planned to go into publishing. Both Gussins had medical careers, and on retiring, Pat Gussin discovered she wanted to write, which is where this story really begins.

The Gussins also own two vineyards in New Zealand, which is another adventure they didn’t plan on in retirement.

Gussin, who calls “Come Home” emotional, is planning to make a series out of the book with a second one focusing on Nelson’s twin sister, Natalie. She plans to call the series “The Identicals.”

Weaving characters throughout multiple books is something she’s done before. Her first book, “Shadow of Death,” is the first in a series following Laura Nelson.

Nelson has sons and twin daughters. Those twins are Nicole and Natalie Nelson.

“I really like to explore what we would call domestic suspense,” she said.

Some of her writing is based on her personal experiences. Gussin said the character of Laura Nelson in her first novel is loosely based on herself, for she was in medical school in Detroit during the Detroit riots as was Nelson. Gussin was also in Cairo two days before Arab Spring began, which ties into “Come Home.”

Ricky Garvie has only been a Longboat Key resident for a few months, but he’s already got his head in the clouds, give or take a few thousand feet.

Garvie, who moved to Longboat in September, is launching the Sarasota Balloon Festival from March 8-11 with the help of his company, Midflo. Hoping to make it an annual event, Garvie promises to have “dozens of hot air balloons, more than 100 vendors and 23 or more food trucks.”

Garvie said the four-day event will be a family-friendly festival.

“It will be almost like a county fair, but with no animals,” he said.

“We will have a carnival and live music.”

No admission will be charged to enter the Sarasota Balloon Festival.

Although Garvie expects big crowds, he wouldn’t offer any specific expectations, other than to say, “it all depends on the weather.”

“These things become so popular you need to have effective traffic management plans,” he said.

“This also is more about planning the infrastructure. I want this to be a long-term event.”

Each morning of the festival, patrons will be able to watch “competition flights,” and each evening will feature a “Balloon Glow” with illuminated balloons lifting off to music. Garvie said the event could have a significant impact on the area.

“These events are hugely popular and can draw significant numbers,” he said. “If promoted widely enough, there is a real opportunity to deliver significant economic benefits through sales tax income and room nights at local hotels. But our goal is to keep expectations realistic. This is a first-year event with a sustainable five-year growth plan to hopefully become a significant regional event.”

The customer said the men’s white Anokhi shirt returned to her after cleaning was not hers and that she had dropped off a men’s white Armani shirt (valued at $700) days earlier. The shop owner told the officer his company operates an identification system that virtually eliminates such errors. The officer told both parties the case was a civil issue.

ALL BARK 7:52 p.m., 1900 block of Harbourside Drive Suspicious circumstance: Police were called to a condo in response to a dog barking in a “distressed” way. The caller told police the condo’s door was unlocked and, based on the barking behavior, someone might be inside. The officer knocked on the door and got no response. A neighbor asked the officer if he needed assistance and called the owners of the condo to make sure all was OK. The owners were at dinner. The neighbor explained what was happening and took the dog to care for it until the owners returned.

TOO CLOSE 10:45 p.m., 2300 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive Traffic violation: A patrolling officer was alerted by radio to a possible reckless driver, quickly located the car on the road and witnessed it tailgating the caller’s vehicle. Upon making a traffic stop, the driver said the car ahead was driving slowly and applying the brakes frequently, making it difficult to keep proper separation. A verbal warning was issued to the driver who was seen following too closely.

PERMISSION GRANTED 10:46 a.m., 3600 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive Public service: A “No Trespassing” sign gave a plumber pause, though he had a scheduled appointment to enter a condo. With no one home, the condo association president confirmed the owner knew of the work and OK’d the plumber to enter.

Longboat Key firefighters tee off first golf classic

T

he first Longboat Key Firefighters Association Golf Classic was a hole in one.

About 85 people participated in the Nov. 18 event. Association President Bryan Carr said they had a great turnout and plan to do the event again next year.

“As long as the reception is good, we’ll keep on,” he said.

The event included a round of golf followed by a buffet lunch and

awards ceremony.

The event benefited the Longboat Key Firefighter Association, which began in 2014. The association members started with smaller projects, such as a CPR program, but now they want to expand to create a scholarship fund for those who want to become firefighters, EMTs or paramedics.

WALTER CARROLL HALLER

CLARK E. MORTON Clark E. Morton, 83, of Englewood, died Aug. 12.

Walter Carroll Haller, 91, died.

Mr. Haller was born Nov. 22, 1925, in Louisville. He was raised in the Madisonville neighborhood of Cincinnati. Mr. Haller graduated from Withrow University High School and the University of Cincinnati. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. Mr. Haller had a strong work ethic and a long professional career until he was 70. He valued truth, respect, quality craftsmanship and good diction. He was an avid tennis player and traveler. He enjoyed sports, especially Major League Baseball and college basketball, dining with friends and family and the beaches and spoonbills of Longboat Key, where he owned a condo for 35 years. His love of baseball began as a child when his father took him to Crosley Field in 1935 for the first majorleague game under the lights.

Mr. Haller has been recognized as one of the longest-living Cincinnatians to witness the event.

Mr. Haller appreciated the performing arts and abstract and contemporary architecture and design.

Mr. Haller was preceded in death by his brother, Eugene “Geno” Haller, parents Walter and Edna Haller; son Scot Haller, wife of nearly 20 years

He was born in Carroll, Iowa, to Thelma and Harold Lewis.

The Morton family moved to Burlington, Iowa, where Mr. Morton was active in sports, lettering in both football and basketball. He graduated from Burlington High School where he continued as an athlete and made the community college basketball team.

Mr. Morton served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged as a corporal. After serving as a manager and leader with several corporations, including the Shell Oil Co., Mr. Morton became a pioneer in Florida real estate development beginning with the Deltona Corp. and managing as many as 90 sales offices. He was later involved in the development of prestigious real estate projects such as the Yacht and Racquet Club of Boca Raton and the Sanctuary of Longboat Key. Mr. Morton was affectionately known as “Mortie.” His charismatic personality often led to him being requested as the master of ceremonies at public events.

Mr. Morton was proud to be an Iowa Hawkeye and rarely missed a class reunion.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert “Bob” Morton.

Mr. Morton is survived by four children, Patricia Morton, Clark Morton II, Jefferson Morton, Cathryn Morton and Ross Morton; one grandson; and one niece.

ROBERT NELSON

Robert Nelson, 95, of South Nyack, N.Y., died Nov. 18.

Mr. Nelson was a World War II veteran. He was a builder in Rockland County in New York and Bergen County in New Jersey, and was an avid golfer as a member of both the Montammy Country Club in New Jersey and the Longboat Key Club.

Since 1970, Mr. Nelson spent his summers in South Nyack where he enjoyed the views of the Hudson River and evening with friends and family on the dock.

His biggest enjoyment was his time on the water. He was a long-standing member of the boating community as commodore of the Englewood Yacht Club and a member of the Sarasota Yacht Club. He was a resident of Longboat Key. Mr. Nelson was preceded in death by his wife, Frances “Frankie” Nelson. Together they enjoyed traveling, boating, dancing and spending time with family.

He is survived by his three children, Randy, Chery and Brian; nine grandchildren; two great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Holiday cheer to Longboat The Women’s Guild’s annual Christmas Bazaar took place Nov. 18 at St. Mary’s.

hree years ago, Jane Vorel’s granddaughters gave her an angel ornament made of ribbon.

Since then, Vorel has learned how to make the ornaments herself and is passing the lesson on to other members of the St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church’s Women’s Guild.

Those ornaments were just some of the many handmade decorations Women’s Guild members worked on to prepare for this year’s Christmas Bazaar.

The members watched their hard work come to life Nov. 18 as shoppers swarmed Father Edward Pick Hall.

From baked goods and Christmas wreaths, to jewelry and ornaments, the annual Christmas Bazaar had enough selection to complete plenty of holiday wish lists.

Clara McGonigle, Andy Youngs and Carol Fischbein organized this year’s

bazaar. It wasn’t their first time organizing it, so they said to keep it fresh, they’ve found that variety works.

McGonigle explained that for handmade items, such as scarves, those who make them look at trends to see what’s fashionable.

“We can appeal to grandmothers who give [these] to daughters and to granddaughters,” she said.

Pins and ornaments were on sale along with Christmas trees, wreaths, jewelry and baked goods.

he Key Niners Women’s Golf Association is driving toward another season.

About 70 members gathered Nov. 7 at the Harbourside Ballroom following a round of golf on the Harbourside golf course of the Longboat Key Club.

The ladies were served a buffet lunch, which was followed by a fashion show featuring new sportswear available at the club.

Longboat Key Realtors say sellers should pay attention.

oday’s real estate buyers may fall in love with the unique lifestyle and offerings of Longboat Key, but they still want something fresh, according to local Realtors.

For about 15 years, buyers sought Mediterranean-style homes with smaller rooms and other features that Coldwell Banker Global Luxury Realtor Roger Pettingell said was more aligned with “mega”

mansions.

This style, based on a look taken from the Tuscan region, featured rounded arches, darker finishes and dramatic, smaller spaces.

Pettingell now sees that buyers are looking for features such as open floor plans, 24-by-24-inch tile, hurricane windows, accommodations for such high-end electronics as large-screen TVs, and higher ceilings.

Ryan Ackerman, of the Ackerman Group, agreed: People are looking for a style that’s more

contemporary.

This design includes more open space, lighter floors and cabinets and sleek, modern finishes.

Pettingell said this coastal contemporary look fits in with Longboat’s outdoor attributes.

Part of the coastal contemporary aesthetic seeks to bring the outside environment inside, through large windows and bright settings.

Gathering spaces are gaining traction with house shoppers, too. Big kitchens with islands people can gather around and open porches that connect to the family room are some of the trends Pettingell has noticed becoming more popular.

Over the summer, Pettingell watched as a Grand Bay condominium was taken down to the studs and remodeled into a property featuring a more-open living area.

“It’s getting away from separate dining rooms, movie theaters, bars — none of that is important anymore in the most general sense,” Pettingell said.

Ackerman has seen the same in individual condominiums and in condominium associations.

Beaches of Longboat Key just finished renovating its common area, and Promenade condominiums is beginning the process, he said.

“I think that while they’re older buildings, it makes them competitive with the newest construction,” Ackerman said.

With little land for new development on Longboat Key, both Ackerman and Pettingell have noticed an upward tick in people demolishing and rebuilding homes in the Country Club

In terms of condominiums, most are 20 to 25 years old now, and while they can be newer than some, they still can be renovated to meet people’s desires.

Pettingell looks to California to see what trends are developing because they usually head this way, he said, though he knows Longboat’s market isn’t like California’s. In fact, he said this market has a lot of Midwestern influence.

That could be because most buyers on Longboat aren’t looking for their primary home.

“For most of the people, it’s their secondary home, their vacation home, and they don’t want to go through the construction process,” Ackerman said. “If it’s done at its core and it’s nice, people will purchase something with the idea that they need to update a bathroom or two. But if it requires more than that, the sellers need to pay attention to the market.”

Ackerman has found that it’s tough getting sellers to agree to renovate their homes before putting them on the market.

“A lot of them will do paint,” he said. “It’s inexpensive, but sometimes they’ll change out the hardware to the faucet. It’s very important to help the process in terms of selling quicker and getting sellers a higher number for their property.”

Pettingell has worked with clients to get them to open up their kitchens. He said it’s inexpensive because it usually only requires removing drywall, rather than altering the structure of the home.

The renovations affect how much time a home could spend on the market.

Although the time a home spends on the market changes with conditions, Ackerman says that homes that are priced at $1.5 million stay on the market for anywhere between 15 and 45 days. Homes priced more than that tend to stay on the market for an additional 30 to 60 days.

“It all depends on location,” Ackerman said. “It depends on its current condition, and it depends on price point.”

For Pettingell, luxury market homes could stay on the market longer — nearly four months — although he just sold two homes in two and three weeks, respectfully.

“We’re still not in that kind of market where we’re going to get multiple offers on a property,” he said. “We have a value-orientated buyer that looks to comparable sales to understand pricing ...

We’re selling a dream.”

Kiwanis Club ready to serve up Lawn Party PARTICIPATING RESTAURANTS

It’s that time of year.

The seventh annual Longboat Key Kiwanis Club Lawn Party is almost here.

The event takes place from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Islandside Driving Range of the Longboat Key Club, 220 Sands Point Road.

As snowbirds make their way back to the island, event cochairman Bob Gault has seen the hype build.

“Well, there’s a lot of enthusiasm, which we’re excited about,” he said. “We have sold about 30 tables of 10 ... which is a good place to be right now, and I think we will sell out if things keep going the way they are.”

On average, the event sells between 800 and 1,000 tickets.

Gault, who is co-chairing the event with fellow Kiwanis members Asima Palmer and Glenn Peterson, estimates this year’s attendance will be 800 or 900, but hopefully it reaches 1,000.

“We’ve got a big space and a lot of restaurants and plenty of seating, so I would say we could go up to about 1,200 and [people] would still be comfortable, and I don’t think we’ll hit that number.

Set for this year: 28 restaurants.

“The vast majority, if not all, are repeats,” Gault said. “They know it’s a great community event, and I think it’s important to remind everyone why we’re doing it.”

The lawn party benefits the Kiwanis Club’s scholarship fund.

“We’re not doing it just to have fun. It is a very fun party, but it really does help 25 to 30 kids a year get a scholarship,” Gault said.

One of the biggest revenue generators for the lawn party is the raffle, known for its grand prize of $20,000.

This year, other prizes include

a VIP trip to Universal Orlando Resort, an overnight package from Zota Beach Resort and a golf package from Longboat Key Club.

Raffle tickets are $100 each and can be bought from any Kiwanis Club member; The Lazy Lobster, 5350 Gulf of Mexico Drive; or SunTrust Bank, 510 Bay Isles Road. The same goes for tickets, which are $50 each. Tables of 10 are $450.

Along with event sponsors, the lawn party is made possible with volunteers. Cardinal Mooney High School students volunteer each year by helping set up, serving water, clearing tables

and cleaning up after the event.

The Longboat Key Public Works Department also helps with setup and tear down. Project manager James Linkogle will perform with the Blues Pig Band.

Gault also said it’s important to remember that weather is a nonissue.

“This event is going to go on rain or shine,” he said. “We don’t have a co-chair in charge of weather, but the weather is usually good this time of year, and we have some huge tents and the restaurants are covered, and the seats are covered, so if we have a little spritz, the show goes on.”

t was all about furry friends Nov. 4 at St. Armands Key Lutheran Church.

Church members brought their pets to be blessed in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and ecology.

The Rev. Ken Blyth welcomed all guests, furry or not, to the annual service.

He blessed all the animals individually before guests enjoyed cake while cats and dogs munched on treats.

Before guests enjoyed their dinner, Longboat Key Police Chief Pete Cumming and Deputy Chief Frank Rubino spoke about island safety and police security measures.

After dinner, members attended a special service where new covers were placed on the temple’s Torahs.
