At this year’s Florida Outdoor Writers Association awards ceremony, the environmental group was awarded The Biff Lampton Memorial Conservation Award for its outstanding conservation efforts.

Rusty Chinnis was awarded in two categories. Chinnis won a second place award for a magazine feature that was more than 1,200 words about Anna Maria Island and other local waters including Longboat Key, entitled “Anna Maria Island, Heart of the Suncoast.” He also won first place for his photo “Eye to Eye,” which was of a tarpon.

hile Ringling College of Art and Design is in the process of raising the $18 million needed to construct the Longboat Key Arts, Culture and Education Center, the town is working on another plan for the site, albeit a temporary one.

Longboat Key officials are developing a plan that would transform the property where the Amore Restaurant once operated into an outdoor space, where events such as concerts or art shows could be held. The town bought the Amore site in January 2017 for $2.2 million. The restaurant moved to the Burns Court area of downtown Sarasota.

“We would demolish the Amore building,” said Town Manager Tom Harmer. “We would then smooth out the site and put pavers in.”

Longboat Key’s Public Works Department is working with George F. Young Inc., a St. Petersburg engineering company, on site plans. Longboat received $400,000 from Sarasota County to demolish the former restaurant and transform it into green space.

Harmer said a temporary stage could be brought in for concerts, or movies for town residents.

There are no plans to build anything permanent at the location, where a low-grade wetland site will have to be mitigated before any work can begin.

“Because it is going to take a while to get project done, having the Amore building removed and having interim space is a great idea,” said Commissioner Ken Schneier. “It will be a good use of that space.”

Commissioner Jim Brown agreed.

“Ringling’s plans won’t come to fruition for a few years,” Brown said. “The site was just sitting there, so we might as well use it.”

When the planned Ringling center gets constructed — by 2023 on Ringling’s timeline — it will include classroom space, a theater, mechanical and technology rooms and a courtyard that would separate the two buildings.

A memorandum of understanding, which outlines the details of the project between the town and Ringling, is in the process of being finalized.

TIMELINE The fundraising effort is slated to continue through 2020, when the project’s design team will be selected.

A schematic design of the center is also expected to be completed in 2020.

A contractor is scheduled to be named during the first quarter of 2021, with construction to begin in the second quarter of 2022.

Occupancy is anticipated at the end of 2023.

Key Center for the Arts, which was located in the Longbeach Village neighborhood at the northern end of the Key. That property was purchased last year by developer Jim Claubaugh, who is building The Preserve, a residential development of a dozen, $1 million-plus, single-family homes.

Raising the necessary funds to construct the new center is a priority for Ringling College. President Larry Thompson said before work begins, the entire project cost — $18 million — needs to be raised.

The Longboat Key Foundation, which has headed the cultural center efforts, plans to raise most of the money to pay for the construction of the center through philanthropy and endowments.

“Requiring this is an issue, but it is the only way to effectively deal with a project where fund-

raising is the only source of funding,” Thompson said in an email.

Thompson confirmed he has spoken with “20-to-30” prospective lead project donors, all of whom have a high net worth.

“Yes, most were high-net worth, but others were individuals who have been advocating for such a center,” he said.

“The idea is to gauge the interest in support for the center and to learn what they would like to see the center be.”

Brown said Longboat Key is a good place to find project donors.

“There are a lot of people here who are capable of making large contributions,” he said.

Naming rights also may play a role funding the center, Thompson said.

“Yes, there will be opportunities for us to recognize donors in appreciation of their gifts that enable the construction of the center. Those opportunities will include naming rights,” he said.

Once construction of the center is complete, the town would lease the site to Ringling College on a long-term basis. The college would be responsible for operations.

“I know Larry Thompson and he has done a tremendous job at Ringling College,” Schneier said.

“He makes things happen.”

Brown, too, is optimistic about the center, which he said will help bolster the Key’s cultural offerings.

“I have been approached by theater groups in Sarasota about bringing productions out here,” he said.

29. It was about 4 feet across and 3 feet tall, complete with antennas, Russian words and scorch marks that some interpreted as coming from reentry from orbit.

But police, after giving it a once over, discovered the device was made of air conditioner and television parts.

In short, a hoax.

The Broadway Street and GMD intersection is not the only location where Longboat officials are considering a roundabout.

There are ongoing discussions about possibly constructing one at the intersection of GMD and Longboat Club Drive at the Longboat Key Club.

The club is in the process of rebuilding its gatehouse and realigning the entrance, a project meant to accommodate new development along Longboat Club Drive.

“We’ve talked about it with the Longboat Key Club, but those plans are long range,” Harmer said.

Longboat Key’s Town Commission has set aside $150,000 to study whether it makes sense to construct a roundabout at the intersection of Gulf of Mexico Drive and Broadway Street in the northern end of the Key. The idea for a roundabout has been discussed by Longboat Key officials for more than a year.

But by setting aside money for a study in the recently approved budget, officials hope to get an idea of what a roundabout would look like and how much it would cost to build, Town Manager Tom Harmer said.

No timeline for consideration, design or construction has been laid out, he added.

Going south on GMD from Bradenton Beach toward Longboat, there is a blind curve, where motorists on Broadway Street often have difficulty seeing oncoming vehicles, something that has concerned officials.

“The long-term desire is to improve the curve,” Harmer said.

The Florida Department of Transportation reports an average of 9,700 vehicles — going in both directions on GMD — pass Broadway Street daily.

Town leaders OK review of Sarasota roundabout Project unlikely to be stopped, officials say, but modifications might be possible.

Longboat Key leaders have long said traffic problems on the island, particularly during the season, have nothing to do with bottlenecks close to home but rather farther south and east – on St. Armands Key and the mainland.

To that end, town commissioners in a meeting last month approved spending up to $22,760 for a peer review on one of their frequently criticized projects — a roundabout at U.S. 41 and Gulfstream Boulevard on Sarasota’s bayfront.

The money was derived from the commissioners’ contingency fund.

Acknowledging it was an uphill fight — with the roundabout project already in the design phase and scheduled for a construction start in 2019 — commissioners voted 6-1 to proceed, even if stopping the project was unlikely.

Commissioner Jim Brown voted against the idea.

“What it could do is advance design modifications or improvements,’’ on the design, said town Public Works Director Isaac Brownman.

Part of the peer review, which would be done by CDM Smith Traffic Engineering Services Division, could include an analysis of high-season traffic flowing through the intersection, which was recently modified to include three left turn lanes from Gulfstream to northbound U.S. 41.

“Let’s focus on the roundabout but also the current configuration, and let’s evaluate that,’’ said Commissioner Jack Daly. “It’s clear the train is leaving the station on the roundabout.’’

The chief complaint island residents and leaders have with the intersection and the plan to modify it is the potential for traffic backups, especially when the island population rises with tourists and winter residents.

The real-world reticence of drivers to enter a high-traffic roundabout, prompting backups over the Ringling Bridge, has been a long-held concern of town leaders. Brown said in 2017: “Some people will sit and wait until they get a printed invitation” to make a turn. “If that happens at the intersection that we’re talking about, then we have a problem.’’

Brown’s objection to the peer review revolved around the cost and the long odds anything substantial could be done to make changes at this point.

“They started the design already,’’ he said. “It’s a done deal, and I think we’d be wasting taxpayers’ money.’’

Temporary home needed during firehouse rebuild Longboat Key Fire Rescue’s north station

Longboat Key Fire Rescue’s south station will be rebuilt in 2019, but not before a temporary base is found for the crews and equipment.

Other than location, Dezzi said the temporary space must have room for four-to-five firefighters, preferably with bathrooms for each gender.

In March, Longboat Key voters approved a referendum allowing the town to spend up to $5,895,000 to refurbish the northern station, 5940 Gulf of Mexico Drive, and to build a new southern fire station.

“The northern station (built in 1994) is newer and better,” said Harmer, explaining why the south station would be demolished and a new one constructed.

The southern station, built in 1986, has mold issues, does not

meet codes for firehouse storage, mechanical systems or energy efficiency. It also has the same entrance for both firefighters and the public, which can interfere with access for both.

Additionally, the building was not designed with male and female firefighters in mind. Four of Longboat’s 33 firefighters are women, Dezzi said. Separate facilities for men and women were not an issue when the town built the south station.

Plans for the northern station, where the department is based, include enhanced locker room facilities, sleeping quarters and kitchen area.

he $1 million renovation of Longboat Key Fire Rescue’s northern fire station could start by the end of the year, with construction of a replacement station on the island’s southern half beginning as early as the first quarter of 2019.

The town is negotiating with Sweet Sparkman Architects of Sarasota to design the north station renovations as well as blueprints for the $4.6 million south station project, which would be around 10,000 square feet, said Town Manager Tom Harmer. The next step would be hiring a construction manager and contractor to build and oversee the project.

The catch to these plans, however, is that a temporary location will be needed for the south station during demolition and construction. The current building at 2162 Gulf of Mexico Drive needs

to be razed. That station would be replaced with a one-story building with three truck bays. This portion of the project is estimated to take 12 to 18 months to complete, Harmer said.

Among the initial considerations for temporary quarters: n Moving into an empty storefront at the Shoppes of Bay Isles by the Publix Super Market; n Renting a house;or n Placing a large trailer on land at the former Colony Beach & Tennis Resort.

Fire Chief Paul Dezzi said a decision could be made early next year. In considering a temporary location for the south station, response times and proximity to southern homes and businesses must be considered, he said. The stations are 4.5 miles apart. The nearest other fire station, outside the town, is a county station near St. Armands Circle.

“We have a five-minute response time,” he said.

Water, sewer work flows in Emerald Harbor

The $3 million Emerald Harbor Utilities and Street Upgrade Project is a quarter of the way completed and on schedule to be finished by June 2019, Longboat Key officials said.

And residents said they couldn’t be more pleased.

“They have done an exemplary job to this point,” said Jim Smith, president of the Emerald Harbor Homeowners Association.

In July, work began to replace all sewer and water lines in Emerald Harbor, part of the town’s master plan to replace aging infrastructure on the island. Funding for the project was set aside years ago from water and sewer fees.

Gas tax revenue is paying for the street-resurfacing portion of the work.

But a lot of work remains in the yearlong project.

The next step will be the installation of a water main on Emerald Harbor Drive, said Public Works Director Isaac Brownman.

Once that portion of the project is completed, pressure and bacterial testing will take place. If those results are satisfactory, the water main will be placed in service and the old pipes decommissioned, he said. Work will also continue on Old Compass Road.

The final phase of the project will be road resurfacing, Brownman said.

An unpleasant odor drove the decision to embark on the project. Saltwater in the soil has, over time, corroded the underground metal pipes in the 80-home Emerald Harbor, also leading to slow draining sinks and sinkholes on the roads. Those metal pipes are being replaced with PVC pipes, which are corrosionresistant and should last 60 to 80 years, town officials said.

While it takes some time to get accustomed to having pipes in their yards and driving around orange traffic cones and construction equipment, Emerald Harbor residents say they are happy with the pace of the work.

“We are very pleased,” said Chris Dumas, vice president of the homeowners association.

“They have a lot of equipment and trailers here. The vast majority of the work is currently being done on Binnacle Point Drive, where underground drilling is taking place,” he said.

Work is being performed by Magnum Builders of Sarasota and its subcontractors.

The amendments T

o be an informed voter this year will require effort.

In the city of Sarasota, voters will make choices on 39 ballot items; in Sarasota County, 38 ballot items; and in Manatee County, 28 ballot items.

On more than half of everyone’s ballot, it won’t be a matter of voting the political party line.

Voters will make choices on issues affecting taxes, rights, the environment and recreational options.

To navigate these questions, we are devoting the next three Opinion pages to analyzing their meaning and effects and providing our recommendations.

Longtime Observer readers know our litmus tests for amendments to the state constitution and county and city charters are these questions: n Will the effect of the amendment increase and/or protect individual freedom fairly, or will it restrict or take away individual freedom? If it’s the former, we likely will recommend a “yes” vote; if it’s the latter, a “no” vote. n Will the amendment limit the power and/or scope of government? If yes, we recommend a “yes” vote; if not, “no.”

There are exceptions, of course. This is why it helps to know some of the background and nuances of the questions. As we know, legislators and others sometimes create confusing questions that, on the surface, sound reasonable, but in practice are meant to favor special groups. In general, we reject government subsidies and special treatment to one group at the expense of everyone else. One exception to that in the past has included property-tax subsidies for military veterans.

In this and next week’s installments, we will present explanations and comments on the 12 state constitutional amendments. This week, we examine Amendments 1 through 6: AMENDMENT 1: Increased Homestead Property Tax Exemption

Proposing an amendment to the State Constitution to increase the homestead exemption by exempting the assessed valuation of homestead property greater than $100,000 and up to $125,000 for all levies other than school district levies. The amendment shall take effect Jan. 1, 2019.

Virtually everyone embraces a cut in taxes. This amendment proposes to do that. But it proposes to do so only for a select group of Floridians: Homesteaded homeowners — Floridians who live in their homes yearround. Renters and commercial property owners get nothing.

This amendment is fraught with more negative effects than positive effects.

Sure, it would cut homeowners’ local property taxes (excluding school taxes) — by increasing the tax exemption on the first $125,000 in value on homesteaded properties. Lawmakers and others say this will incentivize homeownership.

But this brings up the old Milton Friedman truism: What you give to one you must take away from another. In this case, every increased tax break given

to homesteaded homeowners results in an increased burden on second-home owners, renters and commercial property owners. Florida already has a serious problem with affordability, especially for the poor and renters; this will exacerbate that.

What’s more, this measure puts more restraints on local governments’ revenue and shifts more funding and taxing power to the state — a bad move.

We have argued for decades that the homestead exemption is anachronistic and should be abolished altogether. When it was adopted decades ago, it was intended to help attract people to move to Florida. We don’t need it. In fact, if the homestead exemption were eliminated altogether, every property owner could see his or her taxes fall.

It sounds counterintuitive to vote against a measure that lowers the tax burden, thus increasing freedom. But this is one of those double-edged amendments: It’s a subsidy for some at the expense of others. If lawmakers want to cut taxes, cut them for all.

We recommend: Vote no.

AMENDMENT 2: Limitations on Property Tax Assessments Proposing an amendment to permanently retain provisions currently in effect, which limit property tax assessment increases on specified non-homestead real property, except for school district taxes, to 10% each year. If approved, the amendment removes the scheduled repeal of such provisions in 2019 and shall take effect Jan. 1, 2019.

This is one of the simplest, most straightforward and easiest to understand of the amendments.

It proposes to make permanent a provision in the constitution that limits property-tax increases on all non-homesteaded properties to no more than 10% per year.

When originally adopted, the provision was set to expire next year.

As a point of reference, the maximum annual increase in tax assessments on homesteaded properties is limited to 3%. For all other properties: no more than 10%.

Here again, unequal taxation.

But that’s another story.

In this instance, you can say the 10% limit helps renters and Florida’s economy. Imagine if local governments had no limit on increases in taxable values and assessments.

This amendment passes our litmus tests: It will permanently limit government taxing power, which concurrently increases individuals’ liberty.

We recommend: Vote yes.

AMENDMENT 3: Voter Control of Gambling in Florida

This amendment ensures that Florida voters shall have the exclusive right to decide whether to authorize casino gambling by requiring that in order for casino gambling to be authorized under Florida law, it must be approved by Florida voters pursuant to Article XI, Section 3 of the Florida Constitution. Affects articles X and XI. Defines casino gambling and clarifies that this amendment does not conflict with

federal law regarding state/tribal compacts.

At first glance, it sounds democratic to have Florida voters decide whether to allow casino gambling in their cities or statewide. Yes, you say, take that power away from state legislators and the special interests that lobby them.

But now lift what is behind the wording: For one, the groups supporting this measure tell you a lot. Of the $37,614,082 contributed in support of the passage of this measure, Disney Worldwide Services has contributed $19,655,000, and the Seminole Indian Tribe, the state’s only licensed operator of casino gambling, has contributed $16,775,000.

They want this measure to pass because they know it will help protect them from future competition. Here’s why that is: Any vote to approve more casino gambling in Florida would require 60% approval — a high, difficult threshold to meet.

We’re not proponents of casino gambling. But we also believe it’s wrong for the state to provide government-sanctioned monopolies to any business, e.g. the Seminole Indians.

The Legislature should legalize casinos, regulate them and allow local governments to create the zoning that suits their communities. Let the marketplace create more competition.

While this measure sounds like it will limit government power, which it will, and increase individual freedom (the freedom to approve casinos), in reality, it will restrict Floridians’ access and freedom to gamble. Follow the money.

We recommend: Vote no.

AMENDMENT 4: Voting Restoration Amendment

This amendment restores the voting rights of Floridians with felony convictions after they complete all terms of their sentence, including parole or probation. The amendment would not apply to those convicted of murder or sexual offenses, who would continue to be permanently barred from voting unless the Governor and Cabinet vote to restore their voting rights on a case by case basis.

This is another of the straightforward amendments. There are no hidden agendas behind the wording.

Some opponents of this amendment believe each case of restoring a felon’s voting rights should undergo the scrutiny of the state’s clemency board because of the varying degrees of felons’ crimes.

But fairness and forgiveness have been two fundamental Judeo-Christian principles at the core of the United States since its founding. To that end, once an individual has paid his or her debt to society, that individual should have the rights restored that were enjoyed prior to the crime, conviction and punishment.

Florida’s system for restoring felons’ rights is outdated and unreasonable. This amendment would expand liberty for more than 1.5 million Floridians who have paid their debt to society.

We recommend: Vote yes.

Observer AMENDMENT 5: Supermajority vote required to impose, authorize or raise state taxes or fees

Prohibits the legislature from imposing, authorizing or raising a state tax or fee except through legislation approved by a two-thirds vote of each house of the legislature in a bill containing no other subject.

This proposal does not authorize a state tax or fee otherwise prohibited by the Constitution and does not apply to fees or taxes imposed or authorized to be imposed by a county, municipality, school board or special district.

This amendment passes both of our tests: It will limit government power, which means it also will increase individual liberty.

Nothing more needs to be said.

Except …

You’re likely to hear opponents to this measure say state lawmakers should be afforded flexibility — especially in times of financial crises, such as economic recessions.

Don’t buy it. This measure won’t prohibit the Legislature from spending. Indeed, over the past five years, while the Legislature cut taxes, it also increased spending 31%, almost twice the national state average of 18%.

Here’s a proven fact: States with falling tax burdens always show faster economic growth and higher per-capita income growth than states with rising tax burdens. As long as Florida remains a low-tax state, the economy will continue to grow, generating more and more revenue for the government, negating the need for tax increases.

We recommend: Vote yes.

AMENDMENT 6: Rights of Crime Victims; Judges

Creates constitutional rights for victims of crime; requires courts to facilitate victims’ rights; authorizes victims to enforce their rights throughout criminal and juvenile justice processes. Requires judges and hearing officers to independently interpret statutes and rules rather than deferring to government agency’s interpretation.

Raises mandatory retirement age of state justices and judges from 70 to 75; deletes authorization to complete judicial term if one-half of term has been served by retirement age.

This proposed amendment is a product of the Constitutional Revision Commission.

If approved it would set a bad precedent.

Heretofore, when citizens initiate petition drives to place a proposed amendment on the ballot, such amendments are limited to one subject matter — to avoid voter confusion.

This ballot measure addresses three disparate, unconnected items. And while all three issues appear logical and sensible, they should not be contained in the same ballot question.

Regardless of the merits of the proposals, we oppose allowing one group (the Constitutional Revision Commission) to have special privileges that individuals and others groups do not have.

We recommend: Vote no.

Dry Dock Waterfront Grill spruces up

The Chart House, another of Longboat Key’s restaurants, is undergoing a face-lift.

Unlike Dry Dock Waterfront Grill, the Chart House has opted to stay open during its sprucing up because the work is being done at night, said Dean Diorides, the restaurant’s general manager.

The Chart House menu and its kitchen area will remain the same when the renovation is completed later this month, he said.

The cedar used throughout the eatery, as well as its windows, will be unchanged.

“It has been decades since the restaurant was freshened up,” Diorides said. “The carpets and the overall look is antiquated.”

During the $500,000 renovation, which began in early September, the restaurant’s ceiling, which sustained water damage last year during Hurricane Irma, will be replaced. New LED lights will be installed.

“It will make it darker,” Diorides said of the lighting. “It will make the view (New Pass) pop.”

The tables in the bar area will be swapped out with taller ones. This way, patrons who are getting a drink or waiting for a table will be able to have a better view of New Pass, Diorides said.

All of the round booths in the restaurant, which seats around 300, were replaced by either tables, or half booths, giving the Chart House room for 35 additional diners. Plus, a new hostess stand will be built.

In the restaurant’s banquet area, a wall has been constructed to give diners in that portion more privacy.

Stutzman said the outside dining area where patrons can look out at Sarasota Bay has not changed. That area still includes four boat slips.

The renovation cost in excess of $200,000. Stutzman said it is important to spruce up a restaurant to remain attractive to diners.

“If you don’t keep up, then you fall behind,” said Stutzman.

“Most of the responses were ‘much better than we thought.’”

CHART HOUSE WORK CONTINUES

Dry Dock owners invest more than $200,000 in dining room.

When diners walk into the Dry Dock Waterfront Grill these days, they can’t help but notice some changes.

But not the menu.

The Longboat Key restaurant reopened Sept. 17 with a spruced-up look. The chairs and tables in the 120-person, second-floor dining area have been replaced, said General Manager Wil Stutzman. Hardwood flooring is now throughout the dining area, he said.

Wall sconces and coastal-looking chandeliers have been added, as have four brown-leather sofas.

“That area had not been utilized,” Stutzman said. “And wouldn’t you rather wait there?”

Sarasota-based Gecko’s Hospitality Group bought the restaurant two years ago for an undisclosed sum from Eric and Cindy Hammersand, who opened the business in 1989. Gecko’s, known for its several area restaurants, left the Dry Dock restaurant and menu intact.

“It was something (Gecko’s) was careful about,” Stutzman said.

completed in time for a mid-September opening, Stutzman said they decided to remain closed three extra days.

The restaurant’s 90 full- and part-time workers were told of the closure six months ahead of time, said Stutzman, adding that many of the workers take vacation at that time.

The ongoing red tide has not affected staffing levels, but it cut business in half the first week, but business is picking up again, he said.

“Business has been steady,” he said. “We’re making progress.”

Driver taken to hospital after traffic incident A Sarasota man was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital early Friday evening after backing out of a parking lot of Harry’s Corner Store in Longboat Key, going through some bushes and coming to a stop next door.

The 55-year-old man was not publicly identified by police.

According to police reports, shortly after 6 p.m., the man, who was driving a four-door sedan, backed out of the store parking lot, 5600 Gulf of Mexico Drive, and came to rest on a grassy area at 5570 Gulf of Mexico Drive, home to the Longboat Observer, Longboat Key Builders and an apartment upstairs.

Kate Honea, who lives on the second floor of the building, said she heard a loud crash and went to her deck and saw Ben Ford of Longboat Key Builders, on the driver’s side of the Hyundai.

“Ben said he needed something to break the car window to unlock the door,” Honea said. “I threw down some cutting shears.”

Ford ended up breaking the left rear window to unlock the vehicle door. The driver was bleeding, said Ford, who worked to keep the man calm until Longboat Fire Rescue arrived.

Witnesses said the driver appeared to be suffering a medical emergency.

Town continues keeping eyes turned to red tide bloom The town’s Public Works Department continues to monitor canals

on the island’s bayside and the gulf front beaches for dead marine life connected to the region’s outbreak of red tide.

Since the middle of last week, no significant accumulations of dead fish and other animals have been reported. According to the town, the last time crews had to head out to clear dead fish from the beaches was Sept. 21, when about 15,000 pounds of dead fish and related materials were scoured from three locations: between the 5200 and 6600 blocks of Gulf of Mexico Drive; between the 2200 block of GMD and the Longboat Key Club; and the area around the Linley Street Boat Ramp.

The red tide outbreak has been affecting local beaches since late July, though it’s not acute now.

In total, Longboat Key has collected more than 90 tons of dead fish and other material since the town began cleaning beaches in early August.

Longboat Key officials said they have spent more than $41,000 on cleanup efforts, with hopes of recovering some of that from federal and state agencies.

Chamber prepares for Small Business Week The week kicks off with seminars starting Oct. 16 and concludes with the awards luncheon Oct. 18.

Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce President Gail Loefgren says neighborhoods depend on the men and women who take risks to launch and run their own businesses.

This is one of the reasons Loefgren said Small Business Week matters to the chamber.

This year’s Small Business Week begins Oct. 15.

“Entrepreneurs are so important to the economic viability of any community,” Loefgren said.

Small Business Week kicks off Oct. 16 with the first of four scheduled seminars. “How to use Google and find new customers and grow!” will take place from 10-11:30 a.m. Pamela Starr, a Google national trainer, will lead the seminar that will teach attendees how to leverage the free assets Google has for small businesses. Attendees will also learn how to create a free Google business listing, engage with prospects through posts and use Google maps.

Following the morning session, attendees can be served lunch.

The afternoon workshop,

“Nine foundations to building and maintaining your successful business” will be held from 1:303:30 p.m.

In this workshop, attendees will learn how to identify customers, create and maintain customer relationships, create strategic alliances and outline activities that will drive business success.

That evening, a Chamber Showcase will take place from 5-7 p.m.

All events will be held at the Zota Beach Resort.

Seminars on Oct. 17 start with“Simple solutions for staying sharp,”from 10-11:30 a.m.

The seminar will help boost attendees’ brain power by teaching critical components of brain health, how to utilize the power of brain training and create a sustainable training program.

The afternoon session from 1:30-3 p.m. is “The art of WOW — Driving extreme client loyalty.”

Attendees will learn a step-bystep strategy for turning clients into fans and how to spot key opportunities to deliver “wow” experiences.

Small Business Week concludes with an awards luncheon Oct. 18, also at Zota. The luncheon will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Attendees will be served lunch and learn who the winners are in all four categories. The luncheon is $35 a person.

For his newest book, Gerald Zaltman took a different approach.

The author of 23 books, and a professor emeritus from the Harvard Business School, published his latest book “Unlocked: Keys to

Improve Your Thinking” in June.

His other books discuss topics ranging from social change from an applied standpoint to marketing and customer behavior. With his latest book, though, he challenges the way readers think.

In this book, Zaltman uses “Think Keys” to delve into

thought processes and help readers improve decisions and actions. His website said that each “Think Key” starts with a statement about how humans think, then an activity is presented to illustrate the process before the question “so what?” is answered. The “Think Keys” circulate around 11 topics, including context, memory, attention and curiosity.

“This is a book that I hope, in an engaging way, even a fun way, helps people pause and focus on how a particular thought was generated in the first place, what mechanisms of mind were going in to this decision,” Zaltman said.

“So it’s much more a processoriented book than a contest or what-you-think oriented book.”

Zaltman said his hope is that readers better understand certain factors that go into thinking. Whether it’s considering the social setting, a person’s physical state or how they are allocating their attention, Zaltman said he hopes readers think about the factors that go into a moment and how they process it.

The motivation for the book came from Zaltman’s concerns about the information environment his grandchildren are growing up in. “[I am] just increasingly concerned not just for that generation, but for all of us, to let opinions determine what we accept as fact instead of the other way around, and I saw the problem being more of an emphasis on what we’re thinking as opposed to how we’re thinking,” Zaltman said.

Zaltman has set up a book-matching program for “Unlocked.” Every time someone purchases a copy of the book, which can be found on Amazon, they can choose an educational program or a certain person to receive a copy of the book, too.

The donor should then reach out to Zaltman by email and tell him how many copies need to be provided to match their donation at a one-for-one ratio.

“I’m eager to have people who might not otherwise have access to the book for whatever reason to have a chance to engage in the issues the book raises,” Zaltman said.

In addition to the book matching program, Zaltman and his wife, Ann, decided to allocate half the profits from “Unlocked” to charitable foundations. To do so, the Zaltmans have asked their six grandchildren, all between the ages of 15 and 24, to choose potential organizations to receive the funds.

“I think they’ll learn about their own values in some way,” Zaltman said. “Why they’re preferring this type of needy person over that type of category of problem, and I’m sure that they will discover they’ve cultivated certain values that they may not be aware of.”

Through this entire process, Zaltman has found that he has a lot to learn, too.

“I’ve learned first of all, that I’m no different than so many people that I’m trying to reach with a book, having arrived at decisions sort of automatically without reflecting, and I need to take a pause as well ...” he said.

lass is almost back in session.

On Oct. 15, the Longboat Key Education Center opens its 2018 fall session, which runs until Dec. 15.

So far, 500 are enrolled as members, which is a bigger group than in years past, Longboat Key Education Center Executive Director Susan Goldfarb said.

Goldfarb said the higher-thantypical number is a mix of things: Members are avoiding sellouts by signing up early; an increase in traffic congestion is reminding residents of opportunities on the island; and residents simply enjoy learning.

“The brain is always open to new stimulation. Research has proven that, so we no longer have to say, ‘Well, I’m getting too old to learn,’” Goldfarb said.

Along with traditional classes, such as yoga and canasta, or social media introductions and movie discussions, there are a few new classes and workshops.

One is a saltwater fly fishing course with Jeffrey Paul Gunthart. The class, which runs for four Thursdays, is for beginners.

Students will be taught casting techniques, how to accurately present an artificial fly and how to tie flies. Students will also explore various fly lines, rods and reels.

Hot fly fishing spots on Longboat Key and around Sarasota will be explored. This course costs $75 for members and $85 for nonmembers.

In addition to this new class, the center has two new Saturday workshops. Fishing In Our Local Waters will be led by Capt. Bucky Goldman and will teach students about catching popular fish in the area.

Various other topics, including

how to rig soft plastics and hard baits, how to select tackle and how to tie a few go-to knots, will be covered. This workshop runs from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 17. The workshop is $30 for members and $35 for nonmembers.

The second new workshop is Developing Your Own Powerful Meditation Practice, which will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 17. Kelsan Sangzin will lead this workshop, which is $25 for members and $30 for nonmembers. Sangzin will teach students the basics of Buddhist meditation and how to develop a personal meditation practice.

With most classes, including ceramics, floral arranging and culinary ones, people’s hands will be busy.

“People will always have something to do with their hands, minds, bodies and their spirits will be lifted, and that’s what we’re all about, and these people want it and they enjoy it,” Goldfarb said.

Each class aims to carry out the mission of the Longboat Key Education Center, which is to provide lifelong learning for all adults.

“Our philosophy is ‘you’re never too old to absorb new information, master new skills and discover new ways to adapt to our rapidly evolving world,” Goldfarb said.

Memberships run annually from June to June and cost $60 for individuals and $85 for couples.

DIRECTOR’S PICKS We asked Longboat Key Education Center Executive Director Susan Goldfarb to choose her top three classes offered this session. She couldn’t narrow it down to three, so here are her top five picks.

BROWN BAG BIJOU: HIDDEN GEMS Gus Mollasis will lead this course from 12:30-3:30 p.m. every Monday from Nov. 5 to Dec. 3. Enjoy a brown bag lunch, usually buffet-style, popcorn and beverages while viewing a full-length, critically acclaimed movie. A discussion with Mollasis will follow. Cost is $85 for members and $95 for nonmembers.

LET’S PLAY CANASTA! This one’s for the beginners. Have fun while learning how to play the card game. Joyce Doran will teach the American Canasta version. This program runs from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesdays from Nov. 7 to Dec. 5.

Cost is $60 for members and $70 for nonmembers.

SALTWATER FLY FISHING This beginner fly casting course is new, taught

by Jeffrey Gunthart.

Students will learn casting techniques, how to present an artificial fly and how to create and tie flies. All sessions meet at the Longboat Key Education Center. The sessions run from 3-4 p.m. on Thursdays from Nov. 8 to Dec. 6. Cost is $75 for members and $85 for nonmembers.

CHAIR YOGA Angela Craig will lead this class that’s for any body, size, age or fitness level. This class, like other yoga classes, is designed to lift spirits, work the body and calm the mind. Students are asked to wear exercise clothes. This class runs from 10-11 a.m. on Saturdays from Oct. 20 to Dec. 15. Cost is $88 for members and $104 for nonmembers.

IPHONE AND IPAD BASICS PLUS Keith Coker will teach students who are a little beyond beginners the basic features of their iOS devices. Fundamentals will be fully reviewed. The class runs from 1-3 p.m. on Wednesdays from Nov. 7 to Dec. 5. Cost is $100 for members and $110 for nonmembers.

About 70 members dressed in their best western attire for a Nashville Nights event.

The event started out with appetizers and cocktails followed by dinner and dancing. But it wasn’t just any kind of dancing. A DJ from White Buffalo Saloon was

on hand at the Harbourside Ballroom to teach attendees the ways of line dancing.

First up, attendees learned a line dance to “Save A Horse (Ride A Cowboy)” by Big & Rich.

The 32-count dance got them warmed up for the next tune, which was “Little White Church” by Little Big Town.

Longboater spins off thesis into book Tom Mayers transforms his 1991 college thesis into a book now sold on Amazon and Kindle.

Tom Mayers’ book might have been written in another decade, but it’s still just as relevant as the day he finished it.

As a student at New College, Mayers wrote his senior thesis on the mangroves of Sarasota Bay. More than 25 years later, his thesis is now available in book form on Amazon and Kindle. It’s called “Sarasota Bay Mangroves 1991: Past Alterations and Future Possibilities.”

Mayers, whose family has owned property on Longboat Key since 1900 when his greatgreat uncle, Capt. John Savarese, bought land, is accustomed to living among the mangroves.

Mayers, 67, would come home from school and see Town Hall and Buttonwood Harbor under construction. His subsequent study of mangroves was natural.

“It just seemed a logical subject because I lived right here,” he said.

At New College, he was encouraged to pursue general studies, which made him look at things from many angles.

As part of his thesis, he worked with scientist John Morrill. He ended up working under Morrill

for 20 years on and off, he wrote in the book.

“The heart of this document is a ‘ground truthed’ trip around Sarasota Bay where I counted and described the mangroves as I found them at the point in time in order to provide a ‘baseline study,’” he wrote in the “Forward to Second Publishing.”

specializing on mangrove trimming to help clients ensure they were following the law when trimming the coastal trees. In addition to the thesis, Mayers added about 10 pages of reflection of his time in that role.

He writes in the book, “Never underestimate the value of visual appeal.”

“A good mangrove-trimming job can enhance the value of a property. A bad mangrove-trimming job can take away from the value of a property. A violation can pass on a legacy of scrutiny by the [Department of Environmental Protection] and can restrict the ability of future owners to trim their mangroves.”

Mayers said the work mangroves can do in filtering pollutants from the water is critical.

He says people should think twice before removing mangroves by drawing a parallel with fish tanks. He said it would be unwise to make room for more fish by removing the filtering machinery in the same way it would be unwise to remove mangroves to accommodate more people.

“I look at mangroves as a giant filter to offset development, so the idea of protecting mangroves is to keep the filter,” Mayers said.

With the recent, extended bout of red tide, people should be more interested in a book like this, Mayers said.

“I really think if you put it in perspective, the mangroves are critical to a healthy environment, and the more you destroy the mangroves, the less likely you are to have a healthy environment here,” he said.

Perhaps an excerpt toward the end of his book best sums up his feelings.

“I believe that it is important that we nurture the natural environment that we have left here on the west coast of Florida. A healthy environment helps to make healthy people, ensures high real estate values, provides habitat for our interesting wildlife, acts as a filter and buffer for human pollution and is good for fishing. Good mangrove laws, fairly applied, will help ensure the prosperity of the west coast of Florida in the future.”
