WHEW! Hurricane Irma brought a big threat, but Longboat lucked out again.

ne would never know that Oliver and Julius Petereit had spent a night without power in a house standing up to winds close to 100 mph.

Longboat takes lessons from Irma’s inland path Officials plan to change re-entry procedure after traffic backed up following the all-clear.

Hurricane Irma taught the town of Longboat Key some lessons in preparation and recovery, even as the storm passed miles inland of its once-worrisome path.

Irma landed Sunday night near Naples, though for at least a day or two the projected course was right along the coast all the way past Tampa Bay. As it approached the Sarasota-Bradenton area east of Interstate 75 at about 11 p.m.

Sunday, its intensity fell to a Category 2 with maximum sustained winds of about 100 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. Emergency officials estimate its storm surge was about 1 to 3 feet in most areas, instead of the 5 to 8 feet predicted.

Longboat Key residents were part of a county-ordered evacuation of barrier islands, low-lying mainland areas and residents of mobile homes. Town officials said the evacuation plan went better than expected, though Mayor Terry Gans said he would have rather seen more people follow the mandatory order. Officials said they couldn’t estimate how many people stayed behind.

“In one sense, it was a good training exercise,” Gans said.

The comfort station, which is being run by volunteers organized by the Longboat Key Garden Club, will run from 9 a.m. to 7 or 8 p.m. throughout the week.

Gans said the notice was the one move the town would reconsider.

Cars began lining up to get back onto the island shortly after the announcement came out through email and social media, creating a traffic jam on both ends of the town. After the wait, residents returned to a town its mayor said wasn’t prepared to handle them.

“We frankly rushed the reentry a little bit because things aren’t perfect here,” Gans said. “I just felt it was really important to get people home.”

When and if the town is ordered to evacuate again, Gans said the town won’t announce a re-entry ahead of time.

spearheaded the re-entry process. Crews were on the Key as soon as winds subsided enough to let them safely pass. Recovery efforts began by 2:30 p.m. Monday.

Aside from a few downed trees and power lines that blocked roads, Longboat Key Fire and Rescue Chief Paul Dezzi said there wasn’t much damage.

“We were very lucky in that the storm made the move it did and we had a lot of protective measures in place,” Dezzi said.

Many of those who returned home on Monday afternoon were without electricity, and about 2,200 were still dark on Wednesday.

Restoration progressed in a patchwork pattern, prompting some residents to call for a dedicated contractor to restore island

power-grid infrastructure. Town officials couldn’t explain to exasperated residents the complexities of the power grid and its restoration.

Water service was restored to residents by the time they returned, but a boil-water advisory was still in effect until two lab-test runs confirm purity after the shutdown. The boil-water, lab-test process is routine in cases of water system shutdown or pipe breaks.

The town was able to protect its wastewater system largely due to a handful of Public Works employees whose round-theclock efforts kept several lift stations from overflowing. Though the town’s largest lift stations were still powered, several of the town’s more than 40 smaller stations were powerless, requiring manual work to keep them from overflowing. Bullock said he had already told officials in Manatee and Sarasota counties to expect a spill, but that was averted because of town workers.

These efforts meant in the days following Irma residents were already close to the conditions they knew before the storm. In fact, even the beaches didn’t suffer. An in email to commissioners, Bullock said the island’s shoreline “fared better than I expected.’’

“A lot of people who are living on the island will never see or never know the work that went into this,” Gans said. “[Town employees] did a hell of a job and a tireless job making sure they could get back and live here.”

“I’ve been here 29 years and I’ve lived through four or five major hurricanes now, and this was advertised as the biggest one ever — but it’s a little overdone I think,” Oliver Petereit said. “I understand the reasoning behind it. They want everybody to be safe.”

Petereit said he was never worried during the storm, just annoyed that the water was turned off. Manatee County officials ordered the beachside system shut down to minimize potential damage. A 48-hour boil water ordered followed the service’s restoration Monday.

“It’s tough to find that middle ground to make sure that people leave,” he said. “Scare them a little bit, but on the other hand, it’s a little overdone.”

The Petereits weren’t the only ones who stayed. Fred Lugano, along with Carol Miller and Rudy Schippers, who evacuated their boat in Ruskin to stay with Lugano, enjoyed a dip in the Gulf of Mexico on Monday before evacuated residents made their way back. The three rode out Hurricane Irma on the island.

“This is the safest place in Florida,” Lugano said.

Still, most did follow the evacuation order.

Residents were allowed back at 4 p.m. Monday, following a safety sweep and initial cleanup by the Longboat Key Fire Rescue, Longboat Key Police and the Longboat Key Public Works department.

At 4:05 p.m., Gulf of Mexico Drive was back to normal — traffic-wise, at least.

storefronts. At least three palm trees collapsed in the newly renovated Bayfront Park, and two trees uprooted and collapsed in Longboat Island Chapel’s Friendship Garden. The sign for the Plaza at 6510 Gulf of Mexico Drive was knocked down.

Some uprooted trees and branches lined Gulf of Mexico Drive and spots on the north end had some flooding. However, nothing blocked GMD as residents made their way home.

Despite all the businesses being closed, including CVS Pharmacy and Publix, most residents were in high spirits.

With predictions that Hurricane Irma could cause a lot of damage to Longboat Key as a Category 4 storm, residents left the island not sure what they would find upon their return. However, on Sunday night, Hurricane Irma made landfall in Naples. As the eye of the storm passed about 40 miles east of Sarasota at 11 p.m.

Sunday, its intensity weakened to a Category 2 hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center.

“We’re very blessed,” said Pat Crincoli, a Bay Isles resident. “We thought we were going to lose our entire property.”

Barbara Ehlers, another Bay Isles resident, said Longboat was lucky this time.

“A 10-foot surge wouldn’t have been cute,” she said.

Ehlers evacuated to stay with friends in Venice. She said evacuating there was Plan C. Plan A was to stay home, but when she and her husband heard the mandatory evacuation order, they planned to go to a hotel, which was Plan B. But their hotel choice also fell in the evacuation zone.

Ehlers said the effects from Hurricane Irma seemed localized.

“You’re sorry to say that you’re happy for yourself, but you think about what other people went through, and you kind of feel guilty. We were lucky this time.”

Island shopkeepers, residents happy to see weakened storm Damage not as severe as expected across Lido, St. Armands and Bird keys

It was a much quieter evening than usual on St. Armands Circle Sept. 11. All the businesses were closed, and only a handful of curious residents walked past the boarded and sandbagged storefronts to take in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.

Dehetre said they decided to go for a walk to see the damage done by the storm.

However, all they found were a few puddles of grassy water in the St. Armands Circle Park, along with scattered tree limbs and occasional building debris.

“It was underwhelming,” Dehetre said.

The pair decided to check out Lido Key Beach and the Circle

because they thought the damage would be worse on the barrier islands, Gonzalez said.

But the only storm souvenirs the Circle had to offer besides standing water and damaged trees were a broken porch fan outside Taste of Italy and several handwritten “Closed for Irma” signs — one of which, on the window of Dream Weaver Collection, read “Irma Spared Us! Open Tuesday.”

Gonzalez said the storm was nothing like she expected. She stayed with Dehetre and his parents in their condo in Sarasota because she didn’t want to be alone at her place. She said she was surprised they didn’t lose power.

They’ve both been through a few hurricanes, but Dehetre said none has made a serious impact — probably because Sarasota always seems to dodge a direct hit.

“It could have been a lot worse, but it fell apart,” Gonzalez said of the storm.

Unlike St. Armands Circle, Lido Key Beach was buzzing with activity Monday evening.

Loyal Dodd and friends drank beer and blasted music after deciding to continue their hurricane party the day after Irma came ashore.

“I’m very glad it’s not bad,” he said of the conditions. “We got lucky.”

Farther down, Sarasota residents Izzy and Aimee Carmona played on the beach with their kids, 4-year-old Samantha and 9-year-old Alex, both of whom slept through the worst of the storm Sunday night.

The family of four chose to stay in their home, about 10 miles inland from Lido Key, and stocked their walk-in closet with games

and snacks to create a safe room.

“They had fun,” Aimee Carmona said of the kids’ first hurricane experience. “They weren’t scared.”

Their home was not damaged, but a tree fell on one of their neighbors’ homes.

The four came to the beach to see the rough waves and how high the tide was, but Aimee Carmona said she was somewhat disappointed by the lack of shells that she’s accustomed to seeing wash up after a bad storm.

Bradenton resident Todd Test came to Lido Key Beach because he was sick of staying inside for so long during the storm. Asked how he prepared, he smiled.

“We just winged it,” he said.

A few blocks from the beach along Boulevard of the Presidents, the grassy median became an oval-shaped pond after the Sunday night storm. A tree lay uprooted across the street at the intersection of Boulevard of the Presidents and Garfield Street, and down the road at South Lido County Park, several overturned picnic tables were pinned down by fallen trees and tree limbs.

It was much of the same on Bird Key and Coon Key. Tree branches scattered the yards of several Bird Key residents, and one large tree lay on its side along the edge of the Bird Key Yacht Club parking lot. The club itself was unharmed.

Larger debris appeared to have been pushed to the side of the John Ringling Causeway leading to St. Armands, but one large tree that cracked a small roofed structure near Plymouth Harbor was the most extensive damage on Coon Key.

Snowbirds worried, watched Irma from afar KATIE JOHNS STAFF WRITER

As some of their Longboat Key neighbors dashed around from store to home, preparing to evacuate for Hurricane Irma, parttime residents could only watch and, in some cases, worry from hundreds of miles away.

“I’m telling you, we’re looking at every TV screen,” said Paul Ahern, who lives in New England during the summer.

Ahern said the general manager of his winter residence at Beachplace Condominium Association sent continuous updates to outof-town residents.

Ahern also checked the town of Longboat Key’s website and the national weather forecast.

He wasn’t alone in those routines.

“I did not leave my house Saturday,” Elaine Izaks said from her Illinois home. “I sat in front of the TV watching CNN from morning until night, and we were so lucky how we were saved.”

In Illinois, Michael Miller and his family checked newspaper websites, weather.com and watched TV, too.

“Google Earth was fun just to focus in on the property itself even though it’s not in real time,” Michael Miller said.

Former Mayor Joan Webster, who lives in Michigan, stayed up to date using the town’s CodeRED information system, checking emails and watching The Weather Channel.

She said watching television from afar made her feel helpless.

“I wanted to be there helping and doing something,” she said.

For other residents, such as Sandy Cloud, coverage wasn’t comprehensive, making it more frustrating and harder to get accurate updates.

“The one frustrating part, I would say about tracking it on television was there was major focus on obviously the [Florida]

Keys, and then on Naples, and then on Fort Myers, and then on Tampa,” Cloud said from Connecticut. “Sarasota rarely got mentioned, and that was very frustrating. Why aren’t they saying anything about Sarasota as a major population and arts and culture center of the state?”

As Irma neared Florida and residents got ready for its effects, the

snowbirds watched and worried.

“My biggest concern was that people were safe,” Izaks said.

“Things can be replaced, but not lives.”

Izaks, like other snowbirds, prepares her Longboat home before heading north for the summer just in case a storm like Hurricane Irma comes ashore.

moved furniture inside and had a handyman check her home.

But when it was over and Hurricane Irma moved on, snowbirds were relieved to hear their homes and neighbors were OK. “We were lucky ... I feel sorry for the people who live in the [Florida] Keys and places who just have suffered great loss,” Cloud said.

Miller was concerned about his home but realized that he’s lucky that isn’t his primary home.

“At the same time, you have to keep it in perspective, that people’s primary homes are there,” he said. “Those people don’t have anywhere to go.”

And, some residents take perspective in another direction.

When choosing to live on an island, flooding and other natural disasters can happen.

“We don’t worry that much because when you have a place on an island, you have to know that that’s a possibility from the very beginning,” Sue Reese said from Pennsylvania.

Webster said she knew everything would be OK. Having been involved in town government, she knew the plans that would be put in place. Now, she says, people just need to let officials take the next steps.

“The thing I think is the most important is people have to have patience,” Webster said. “They [town departments and first responders] are the finest around, and they have a good plan. They just need time to implement it and activate it.”

Since 2002, the Longboat Key Public Works Department has honored the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, Pa., by lining Gulf of Mexico

Drive with 2,974 American flags.

With the worst of Irma expected to affect the area late Sunday and into Monday, the department was not able to place flags down GMD. Town leaders enacted a state of emergency on Sept. 7, followed by a evacuation order on Sept. 8.

In practice, flags were placed every 20 to 30 feet, down the entirety of GMD, which is approximately 10 miles.

With a hurricane heading toward Florida and two of its members out of town Sept. 7, the Longboat Key Town Commission in emergency session voted to postpone its first meeting after the summer break.

Originally planned for 1 p.m.

Sept. 11, the commissioners voted 7-0 (George Spoll and Jack Daly participated remotely) to move the first meeting since July 17 to 1 p.m. Sept. 15 at Town Hall.

Among topics on the agenda: The first public hearing and vote on the town’s millage rate and budget; consideration of five applicants for an open seat on the Planning and Zoning Board; and legislative priorities for the 2018 session.

Also moved to Sept. 15 was a meet and greet with the board applicants, which was originally planned to take place immediately before the Sept. 11 meeting.

That event will take place at 12:30 p.m., also at Town Hall.

Town Attorney Maggie Mooney-Portale told the commissioners that although the governor granted timing leeway for budget approval because of Hurricane Irma, the requirements for time between the first vote and final vote stands firm: 10 days.

“The governor’s order doesn’t change the fact you need two public hearings,’’ she said.

Town commissioners plan a second-and-final hearing and vote on the budget at their Sept.

25 meeting.

The Planning and Zoning Board vacancy is the result of George Symanski’s resignation June 29.

The appointment would last until May 9, 2018.

The five residents who applied are: n Christopher W. Carman, a 48-year resident and a campaign consultant. He is a former member of the Zoning Board of Adjustment in the 1990s; n Aaron Kleiner, a graduate of Sloan School of Management at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who lists his occupation as executive. He lists himself as a member of the board of director of four corporations; n Randall Langley, who lists his occupation as developer, Realtor and contractor; n Kenneth Marsh, a retired public school administrator and planner; and n John Weber, a retired insurance adjuster.

Additionally, two men have applied for a seat on the town’s Consolidated Retirement System Board of Trustees. They are: n Steve Branham, who is applying to retain his seat on the board.

Branham is a retired rear admiral in the U.S. Coast Guard and cofounder of the company 3ethos, which provides executive-level training and seminars for senior financial advisers. He’s also vice president of government relations for Witt O’Brien’s, a company specializing in responding to disasters. n John Weber, who also applied for the seat on the Planning and Zoning Board.

On the morning of Sept. 11, three swans were swimming around the Longboat Key Club Harbourside

Golf Course in the wake of Hurricane Irma.

They didn’t seem to mind the foliage that had fallen around their home the night before as the storm moved through the area.

Longboat Key’s swan keeper David Novak wasn’t too worried about the swans ahead of the hurricane. He has seen them survive 75 mph winds. Following Hurricane Irma, Novak checked the swans and said he was pleased to find all six still there.

“They seem to just be in their

normal routine,” he said.

Novak said the swans could have done two things during Hurricane Irma’s route around the area: Find a safe hiding spot on land, or literally hunker down into a low profile in the water and use their webbed feet as anchors.

And across Gulf of Mexico Drive on the beach, it seemed the turtle nests fared well, also.

“It really wasn’t too bad,” said Cyndi Seamon, vice president of the Longboat Key Turtle Watch.

Publix to the Seaplace condominiums, Seamon found stakes from nests in the 4100 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive.

“The storm didn’t look like it eroded a lot of the beach, and it didn’t look like it added a bunch [of sand] either,” Seamon said.

“So, for the stakes out on the beach, it didn’t look like a lot of sand was added on top.”

She said she was able to repost the stakes.

“It really blew though,” she said.

“I had a stake where the paint was sandblasted off, so I can’t imagine what the wind was like out there.”

Save our Seabirds staff spent time “battening down the hatches” to preserve as many habitats as possible.

Still, the banyan tree that visi-

tors see as they enter the learning center and bird walk toppled over and smashed several habitats, including the half of the “Birds of Prey” area.

“There were no animals injured,” CEO David Pilston said.

“A couple of them escaped when the door blew open, but other than that, everyone is in good shape.”

Some bird cages were scratched but nothing major. The staff’s first step is removal of the collapsed banyan tree.

“We were lucky, just like everybody,” Pilston said. “Breathing a sigh of relief.”

Across the parking lot, Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium sustained no property damage aside from debris and fallen trees.

Staff and security stayed with the animals. After the storm, extra staff went to the facility to assess for damage and ensure the animals had what they needed.

“All the animals are fine, thankfully, and we’re just dealing with the same thing everybody else is — debris, a couple trees, long, good portions of branches — and other than that we’re just trying to clean up and open our doors as soon as possible,” said Mote spokeswoman Shelby Isaacson.

Staying on island a ‘hellacious’ experience, bayfront resident says Despite a mandatory evacuation order, some Longboat Key residents wouldn’t leave their homes on the island.

After returning from a trip to Alaska on Friday, Sept. 8, Bob and Shannon Gault got to work preparing their home for Hurricane Irma.

First they moved all their pots and plants inside, tied down their two boats and moved the rest of their belongings inside.

Despite a mandatory evacuation order, the Gaults stayed put. By the time they had moved all their belongings and secured their home, it was midday Saturday and the winds were picking up.

Their home was built to withstand a Category 5 hurricane, so they felt safe staying. However, the “unnerving roar” and “the gusts that would slam” against their windows made it an experience Bob Gault said no one would want to go through.

“It was hellacious, in a word,” he said. “It was hellacious. We didn’t have much information because the power was out as of 3 p.m. on Saturday.”

And though their house stood, it did take on some water.

“The rain was torrential and it was driven so hard that it was

They used a wet vac to suck up the water, but they couldn’t keep up.

The Gaults have owned their home since 2007 but have had property in the area since 1997.

Gault said they have never had a weather-related problem before when hurricanes and tropical storms rolled through.

Their home backs up to Sarasota Bay. With the high winds coming straight off the bay, Gault said waves crashed into the seawall, and the water sprayed straight up in the air.

Despite the frightening sights and sounds, Gault said he is thankful he and his wife were home to bail out some of the water that crept into their home.

Next time, though, Gault said they won’t be taking a trip with a hurricane on its way and will secure their belongings sooner.

“You don’t want to risk it,” he said. “It’s best to get out.”

Inland community welcomes retirees Irma’s threat prompts communities to help each other.

Plymouth Harbor nurse Nancy Nahrwold got an abrupt end to her vacation Friday with a call from her supervisor: Please come in to help evacuate residents.

Nahrwold, who moved to Sarasota from the Midwest a few years ago, has seen plenty of snowstorms. Irma was her first hurricane.

Like many of her peers, Nahrwold tried to bring calm to Plymouth Harbor, a nonprofit continuing care retirement community on Sarasota Bay. She and the other Plymouth Harbor nurses and caregivers helped transport 27 residents to Aviva — A Campus for Senior Life, on Honore Avenue in Sarasota, about eight miles inland.

The evacuation to Aviva, also a nonprofit, is part of a life care agreement between a group of senior living, nursing home and continuing care retirement communities in Sarasota. The list includes Sunnyside Village, Pines of Sarasota and Glenridge on Palmer Ranch. Sunnyside Village took in Plymouth Harbor’s assisted-living residents.

last week, both to have space for Plymouth Harbor residents and prepare the campus for a hurricane, including running generators on full load. In addition to the Plymouth Harbor residents and staff, Aviva also took in employees’ families and some family members of residents.

That turned a campus with normally about 300 people, including independent living residents in their own apartments, into a campus of some 600 people. And the population of pets swelled, too, from 25 to more than 60.

“I think it went really well,” said Solomon. “As a community, we all came together.”

Plymouth Harbor evacuees ranged in age from their 80s to a 105-year-old woman.

Because several residents are in wheelchairs or mostly immobile, including one who recently had hip surgery, Plymouth Harbor buses made multiple trips between the facilities. It was an all-day transfer affair Saturday as Irma moved closer to Florida.

“I’ve never been in anything like this before,” said Nahrwold.

Joe Devore, Plymouth Harbor vice president of health services, fist-bumped the bus driver after the last patient in a wheelchair was dropped off. Devore then let out a big sigh, and smiled.

He was often spotted holding his smartphone’s weather app, with a blue dot for where they were, versus Irma.

An executive with Plymouth Harbor since 2013, Devore has done plenty of drills and planning for all kinds of emergencies.

But this was the biggest real-life evacuation drill he has ever been through. “It’s great to have a plan that tells you what you need to do,” Devore said. “But when it actually happens, you still have to make the right decisions, do the right things.”

OPEN DOOR 853 a.m. — 1000 block of Bogey Lane Suspicious circumstance: An open door drew the attention of a caller, who summoned police to investigate. The responding officer found no signs of forced entry and nothing out of the ordinary upon a routine look around the inside of the residence. On his way out, the officer noted the deadbolt lock might not have been fully engaged. The officer made sure the door was secure and left.

BOOM! 10:27 p.m. — 2000 block of Harbour Links Drive Suspicious circumstance: As a thunderstorm began rolling across Longboat Key, an officer was directed to the home of a woman who reported hearing noises on her back porch. She described the sound as similar to someone jumping up and down.

The officer checked her porch and those of her neighbors and found nothing out of the ordinary.

SEPT. 2

DOCK CHECK 1:11 a.m. — 2400 block of Harbourside Drive Disturbance: An officer was sent to the Moorings Marina dock in connection to a report of noise.

When the officer arrived, he walked the length of the docks and checked the topside of all the docked vessels. The officer heard nothing other than the normal operation of the boats. The case was closed.

JUST OUT OF REACH 10:30 a.m. — 7000 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive Disturbance: An officer sent to investigate a report of an intoxicated man creating a disturbance near the Longboat Pass Bridge arrived to find the man, but he was outside the jurisdiction of the Longboat Key Police. The matter was turned over to Bradenton Beach Police.

LET ME IN 11:47 p.m. — 5100 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive Suspicious circumstance: A guest at a vacation rental called police when a man, who seemed drunk, began knocking on the door, claiming he was the tenant of an adjacent unit and was locked out. When police arrived, the officer found a man on the deck of a unit near that of the caller. The man, who police reported seemed drunk, said he couldn’t get inside. The officer found a key, let the man in and checked documents to verify he was permitted inside.

OUT OF THE WOODS 9:26 a.m. – 2100 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive Suspicious person: A gated community security guard called police to report that a woman walking her dog was startled by a man who stepped out of the bushes near a bus stop.

No words were exchanged and no crime was committed, an officer reported. Upon the officer’s arrival, he saw a man matching the guard’s description board a SCAT bus at the stop.

Town’s building chief resigns for Virginia position Alaina Ray, Longboat Key’s Planning, Zoning and Building director, has resigned her position for new job in Loudon County, Virginia.

Town Manager Dave Bullock said her last day would be Oct. 6, and that a search for her replacement would begin soon.

Ray, a former planner with the town, served in an interim-director for three months in late 2013 before being appointed permanently in January 2014.

Ray, 51, was instrumental in guiding the town’s Urban Land Institute process, as well as reviewing applications such as the Longboat Key Hilton Beachfront Resort, which led to the opening of the Zota Beach Resort earlier this summer.

Hanna arraignment reset for Sept. 22 Darry Hanna Jr., the Manatee County man accused in the deaths of two Zota Beach Resort employees in August, will face arraignment Sept. 22 at the Manatee County Justice Center.

Hanna was to appear in court Sept. 8, but Hurricane Irma delayed the proceedings.

Hanna, a 28-year-old Bradenton resident and former employee of Victory Security Florida, is expected to enter a plea on that date. He faces two counts of second-degree murder in the Aug. 4 deaths of night desk manager Timothy Hurley and security guard Kevin Carter, and one count of robbery. Hanna is being held without bond.

Mary Ellen Zierke, 84, of Belvidere, Ill., died Sept. 3.

She was born on April 1, 1933, in Belvidere to Carl and Helen Bender.

Mrs. Zierke graduated from Belvidere High School in 1951 and married Donald Leroy Zierke on Sept. 15, 1953, at First Presbyterian Church of Belvidere, where she was a lifelong member.

Mrs. Zierke loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time on Longboat Key, teaching vacation bible and Sunday school. She was an avid reader and enjoyed bird watching.

Mrs. Zierke was preceded in death by her husband, Don; her parents; and brothers, Clifton and Clayton.

Mrs. Zierke is survived by her sons David and Mark; their spouses; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren and two on the way; her sister Elizabeth Gunderson and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been made in the family’s name.

DANIEL HERZ

Daniel Herz, 83, of Longboat Key and Denver, died Sept. 1.

Mr. Herz was born in Chicago and grew up in Highland Park, Ill. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1952 and began his college career at Colorado University in Boulder on a football scholarship. After one year, Mr. Herz transferred to Lake Forest College, where he graduated with an English degree in 1957. There he was a member of both the baseball and football teams. As a member of the football team, he earned the Little All-American honors twice.

In 1979, Mr. Herz was inducted into the Lake Forest College Sports Hall of Fame. Following college, Mr. Herz served two years with the U.S. Army. When he returned to Highland Park, he met Barbara Kiser. The two married on Dec. 21, 1960, and raised four children together.

For more than 35 years, Mr. Herz worked as an industrial auctioneer and became president of Industrial Plants Corp.

He traveled throughout the U.S. and overseas facilitating the auction sales of industrial machinery at large-scale manufacturing companies.

In 1998, Mr. Herz retired and relocated with Barbara to Longboat Key and Boulder, Colo.

Mr. Herz was preceded in death by his brother Stephen.

t’s not all work and no play for the businesses in the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce and the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance.

For the past nine years, the two organizations have teamed up to create a trade show for members to show off their businesses and network from the east to the west of the area.

This year will be no different, but it will be later than expected.

Originally scheduled for Sept.

19, the event has been postponed because of Hurricane Irma.

“And the reason being is that Florida Power & Light uses Robarts Arena as a staging area and there are still hundreds of thousands of people without power, and they are busy trying to restore power to everyone,” LWRBA Executive Director Heather Kasten said.

The expo gives business people the chance to showcase their businesses to potential clients and customers from Sarasota and Manatee counties.

“I think they continue to come because it showcases their business to businesses out east that we may not know about,” Longboat Key Chamber President Gail Loefgren said.

An estimated 750 people are expected to attend this year, much like past years. About eight restaurants will offer bite-size samplings, and there will be wine and cash bars. The first 250 guests will receive goodie bags.

“My favorite part is it’s really an opportunity for businesses to showcase what they’re really about,” Kasten said. “We do a lot of networking things, luncheons, but what’s great about the expo is that businesses get to put on a show and display products or services. It’s an opportunity to leave that night with some great leads

Since its inception nine years ago, the expo has grown so much that it has changed venues multiple time including the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, the Municipal Auditorium and Robarts. “... and what’s great about Robarts is it really is a great halfway point between Lakewood Ranch and Longboat Key, and they’ve been a great partner as well,” Kasten said.

In keeping with the raffle variation, attendees this year will have the chance to be entered into a raffle for two tickets on Southwest Airlines to anywhere in the United States. Attendees will have passport wheels, and if they visit every booth, they will be entered in the drawing, Kasten said.

The venue can hold 100 booths.

Last year, the expo was filled to over capacity, Loefgren said.

“We’ve got great commitment because people do know there is a little sense of urgency to get a booth,” Kasten said.

Overall, Loefgren said it’s a good cooperative effort between the Business Alliance and Chamber of Commerce to have their members network. Kasten echoes those thoughts.

“That’s what this is all about, connecting these businesses with the intent that they grow their business by being a part of the expo,” Kasten said.

hen First Watch bought The Egg & I Restaurants in May 2015, one of the deal’s selling points stemmed from a tired-but-true real estate theory: Location trumps everything.

Centennial, Colo.-based The Egg & I had multiple locations in Colorado, Texas and Arizona, where east Manatee Countybased First Watch had few locations.

“We saw it as an opportunity to get a strong presence in markets where we didn’t have a presence,” said First Watch President Chris Tomasso. “It was mostly a real estate play.”

One of the leading daytimeonly restaurant chains nationwide, First Watch got its locations, 114 in total, from Dallas to Denver, 20 states in total. First Watch has since gotten something else: a crash course in restaurant conversion strategies.

The initial challenge was scant industry research on best practices for brand conversions.

“We couldn’t find anything out there that has been done before,” Tomasso said. “No one has really done something like this.”

A rare example of a large-scale hospitality brand conversion, according to a recent report in Nation’s Restaurants News, comes from Hardee’s 1990 acquisition of Roy Rogers. Hardee’s bought Roy Rogers’ 600 locations for $365 million. It converted the majority of the stores.

One reason chains don’t normally attempt a full brand conversion post-acquisition is to maintain the purchased brand’s identity. Au Bon Pain Co., for example, maintained the St. Louis Bread name in that region of Missouri when it acquired the company in 1993. All other locations became Panera.

“The data can be daunting,” against conversion, Tomasso said. “All you see in the research is ‘don’t do anything to my brand.’”

Because of franchise agreements, not every The Egg & I will become a First Watch. But a large chunk will. The company has completed 22 conversions and aims to finish eight more by the end of 2017. It’s also converted 18 The Good Egg restaurants in Arizona to First Watch. First Watch acquired The Good Egg in 2014.

The first part of the conversion is the store remodel. Because First Watch closes at 2:30 p.m., work can be done at night, with walls, floors and furniture changed before 4:30 a.m. Then the location closes for a few days for training and to purge ingredients and anything not First Watch. It also holds a series of training and friends and family events.

There are also multiple detailoriented steps in the process; First Watch executives have discovered some take hours, others take days. One task that took a while, for example, was explaining to Yelp the location is new — not a way to clean its record of bad reviews from a previous tenant.

The final step is a grand reopening.

First Watch executives have learned, or re-learned, several lessons during the conversions.

One is to never take anything for granted — that customers get the menu or employees understand what to do or chefs are on top of new items. “Don’t assume bacon and eggs is bacon and eggs everywhere,” Tomasso said.

A cousin of never assume, the executives learned, is transparency, early and often. With that in mind, Tomasso and First Watch CEO Ken Pendery traveled to Phoenix several times in the pregame of The Good Egg conversions. They rented out a restaurant and held a town hall-style meeting with managers.

“You can’t just surprise people,” Pendery said.

Another lesson came in trying to please everyone, a natural hospitality instinct. But trying to meld menus in a hybrid format, to satisfy traditional customers while targeting new ones, was an early mistake, Tomasso said.

Executives called it the Muddy Middle. “We learned quickly that wasn’t going to work,” Tomasso said. “We have to stick to who we are.”

Too many cookbooks in the kitchen?

The Longboat Library is cooking up a large collection of a certain genre.

Recently, the library’s Wonderful Wednesday Book Sales shelves have been filling up with some recipes for success.

What could this genre be, you ask?

Romance? Thrillers? Historical biographies?

Three strikes, you’re out.

It’s cookbooks.

For some reason, it appears that Longboat residents are done with their cookbook days. Recently, the library has become inundated with cookbooks. About 90 to be specific.

From “Feed Your Face” by Jessica Wu to “The Kinda Diet” by Alicia Silverstone, the library has a cookbook for almost every taste.

Want sushi? Buy the “Quick & Easy Sushi Cookbook” by Heihachiro Tohyama and Yukiko Moriyama

Want to class up some homestyle cooking? Buy “Grits and Chardonnay” by Sharon Sanford.

Library volunteer Amy Roth can’t explain the sudden influx of cookbooks. Her best guesses are people are giving up cooking in favor of dining out or using the internet, like she does, to find new recipes.

The library constantly accepts donations for its Wonderful Wednesday Book Sales. Occasionally, donated books do make it on the library shelves to be checked out, but for the most part the books go on sale. Library volunteers ask that any books donated should have been published in the past five years.

You don’t need to be a member of the library to purchase books at the Wonderful Wednesday Sales, so go on, grab a cookbook and try a new recipe.

The Wonderful Wednesday Books Sales run from 9 a.m. to noon. Book prices range from 50 cents to $3.
