Key leaders hope for more communication and less The Sarasota/Manatee Barrier Islands Traffic Study will be completed in three phases. Phase two is underway.

or Tom Freiwald, chairman of the Longboat Key Revitalization Task Force, one word sums up his feelings regarding the progress of the Sarasota/Manatee Barrier Islands Traffic Study.

Frustration.

“The communication has been disappointing,” Freiwald said, speaking on behalf of the task force. “We hope we will not continue to be disappointed.”

The long-awaited study, which is a $942,000 project of the Florida Department of Transportation, is an examination of how to improve the flow of traffic to, from and on Longboat Key, Anna Maria Island and Lido Key. In May, FDOT and Stantec, the department’s consultant, hosted the study’s first steering committee meeting, which initially encouraged island leaders. However, at a Barrier Islands Elected

“Right now, we have no roadmap forward on this study at all,” said Holmes Beach Mayor Bob Johnson, who initiated discussion of the study at the meeting. Representatives of Longboat, Anna Maria and Bradenton Beach also attended.

“I’m a little disappointed that there haven’t been more updates, emails, something,” said Longboat Key Town Manager Dave Bullock.

Like other island officials, Bullock expected FDOT’s consultant to meet with barrier islands representatives every month or so to discuss the progress of the study.

“It does not appear to be that the consultant or FDOT had that understanding,” Bullock said.

Anna Maria Mayor Dan Murphy referred to the situation as a “communication breakdown.”

Following the meeting, Bullock emailed Tricia Labud, FDOT’s traffic studies/analysis specialist,

asking for an update on the study to relay to island leaders.

In her response, Labud wrote that the next meeting of the steering committee is tentatively scheduled for the week of Oct. 9. She also expects FDOT will deliver a presentations about the progress of the study at the Island Transportation Planning Organization meeting on Sept. 11. In the meantime, Labud wrote that FDOT will provide island leaders with biweekly updates about the study’s progress.

FDOT aims to complete the study in three phases, with an ultimate goal of determining specific recommendations by fall 2018.

In June, FDOT announced completion of the study’s first phase, which is a 44-page review of available studies and transportation plans regarding the barrier islands.

In her email, Labud wrote that Stantec is now performing analysis for the second phase, which calls for making observations and collecting traffic data. The third phase will come with a complete

transportation management plan and recommendations for improvements.

After the first steering committee meeting, Freiwald said he and other attendees worried that the study is focusing primarily on strategies to alleviate parking. His concern remains after his review of the first phase of the study.

“That flavor is still woven throughout,” Freiwald said.

Like Freiwald, Jack Daly, a Longboat commissioner and Metropolitan Planning Organization representative, hopes the study will not overlook potential major infrastructure changes to the barrier islands and surrounding areas. Mayor Terry Gans has emphasized the need to address not only traffic on the islands, but interconnectivity between the islands and mainland.

Bullock said he appreciates Labud’s responsiveness and expects to continue working with FDOT toward a positive outcome.

“What I want out of the study is short-term and long-term recommendations to improve traffic flow during season,” Bullock said.

BARRIER ISLANDS TRAFFIC STUDY FDOT has prescribed three phases for the study, to be completed by fall 2018.

Phase 1: Review of available studies and transportation plans regarding the barrier islands to compile a summary of recommendations. An FDOT representative said many of these previous efforts are still relevant.

Phase 2: Make observations and collect traffic data.

Phase 3: Complete a transportation management plan and recommend improvements.

Chuck Whittall has submitted a new proposal to develop the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort property. This one includes a big-name luxury flag.

T

he developer of the former Colony Beach & Tennis Resort on Longboat Key has filed a new proposal for the property with the town, and this one will not require a referendum.

“We’re extremely excited,” said Chuck Whittall, president of Unicorp National Developments.

“It’s going to be beautiful.”

Unicorp submitted the plan for the nearly 18-acre site on Monday. The proposal includes a fivestar 166-room hotel, operated by St. Regis, and 102 residential condominiums, for a combined total of 268 units.

St. Regis is a five-star luxury brand of Starwood Hotels & Resorts, which is part of Marriott International Inc. — the world’s largest hotel brand. There are 60 St. Regis hotels worldwide, including 11 in the United States.

There is one St. Regis location in Florida — the St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort in Miami.

Another subsidiary of Marriott International is Ritz-Carlton, which operates a location in Sarasota. Because of this, Whittall believes the management of St. Regis will be able to approach the project with a firm understanding of the local community.

“St. Regis was just a really good fit,” Whittall said.

Whittall said Unicorp has a signed agreement with the hotel company and they are now in the process of negotiating a management agreement.

The proposal includes two restaurants, a 15,700-square-foot spa and a 10,000-square-foot ballroom. Whittall had previously proposed a ballroom of 20,000 square feet for the property.

Like the ballroom, many details of the proposal are scaled down from Whittall’s original proposal, which failed in a March referendum by 87% of the vote. The former plan included a total of 417 units and a maximum building height of 12 stories.

The new plan’s maximum building height is five stories, reaching no higher than 65 feet over flood elevation, which is the maximum allowable height for new construction on the Key. Also included in the proposal are 6,700 square feet of meeting rooms, 2,750 square feet of board rooms and a “meandering saltwater lagoon.”

TWO-PATH APPROACH

Planning, Zoning and Building Director Alaina Ray noted that any development including more than 103 units is considered nonconforming for the property’s zoning district.

With this information, Unicorp is pursuing two regulatory paths to make the proposal a reality, each of which would require a zoning code amendment to allow the property’s existing units to be used for either tourism or residential purposes, according to the proposal.

The first path requires the use of the 165 remaining units in the town’s tourism-unit pool. Zota Beach Resort, which opened in June, used 85 of the 250 total units in the pool. Voters decided to create the pool in 2008 to allow for flexibility in development of

NEXT DOOR In April, Unicorp entered into a contract with residents of Aquarius and Tencon, the two condominiums adjacent to the former Colony property. The contract extends “membership privileges” for residents of the two properties in exchange for support of a Unicorp project that meets certain criteria, including a total unit count of no more than 268 total units.

tourism on the Key. The second path requires 31 units from the tourism pool, then using a zoning code amendment to convert the property’s 237 grandfathered units to either tourism or residential use.

Any zoning code amendment or use of the tourism-unit pool will require approval from the Town Commission.

The earliest date the proposal could go before the Planning and Zoning Board is at the group’s Oct. 17 meeting. The board will review the plan, then forward its recommendation to the Town Commission as early as November for a decision.

Pending approval from commissioners, Whittall hopes to break ground on the project within a year.

The developer noted that he has been pursuing development of the former Colony property for five years, and during that time, he’s learned a great deal about what the people of Longboat want for the site.

Whittall said he understands residents’ concerns regarding

traffic. Included in his company’s proposal is a traffic study from Kimley-Horn, which concludes that the development will have a minimal impact on peak-hour traffic. The proposal also states that the resort will implement a parking fee to “discourage hotel guests and visitors from using personal vehicles.”

In addition, Whittall’s company will be involved in implementing short- and long-term traffic solutions through the Barrier Islands Traffic Study, a $942,000 project of the Florida Department of Transportation, designed to determine ways to improve the flow of traffic to, from and on Longboat, Anna Maria Island and Lido Key. “Unicorp will participate in the traffic study as a key stakeholder and can contribute financially once strategies are developed,” the proposal reads.

Whittall hopes the community will embrace the new plan, noting that he believes the resort will bring visitors to support businesses, raise property values and “get rid of an eyesore,” referring to the property in its current state.

“We hope to be able to move ahead with the project that we believe will be good for the community,” Whittall said.

Demolition of the Longboat Key Center for the Arts is underway. The facility, which opened in 1952 and closed in May, was purchased from Ringling College of Art and Design by developer Jim Clabaugh for $1.85 million.

Clabaugh said he intends to build 12 single-family homes on the 2.3-acre Longbeach Village site.

On July 11, the town issued a $51,900 construction permit to Grabers Excavating Inc. to demol-

ish four buildings on the property.

Meanwhile, Michael Drake, president of the Longboat Key Historical Society, is working to relocate two cottages, which were once part of the Whitney Resort, from the site to 521 Broadway St. Drake plans to make the cottages a base for the Historical Society.

The organization aims to raise $100,000 to move the cottages and secure them on foundations at the new location, then another $450,000 to ultimately acquire the property.

Drake expects to have the cottages moved to 521 Broadway St. within the next several weeks.

Sarasota saves in one-county scenario Since May, town officials have been discussing the possibility of incorporating the town into a single county.

As Longboat Key officials continue to consider the possibility of incorporating the town into a single county, Town Manager Dave Bullock says a website for the initiative is on the way, along with talks of a straw poll.

In May, town staff and commissioners began discussing whether to incorporate the Key, which includes parts of both Sarasota County and Manatee County, into a single county.

Longboat is one of four Florida towns situated in two counties, and the largest by more than 2,000 residents. Along with two separate taxation plans for property owners, the town’s staff deals with a variety of issues related to the unusual geographic situation, including relations with two county commissions, elections offices and more.

Bullock said town staff is developing a website where residents

on either side of the county line will be able to determine, by property, how becoming part of the neighboring county will affect their tax rates.

After talks of the one-county possibility began, town officials determined that, based on tax rates for fiscal year 2016-17, if Longboat was incorporated entirely into Sarasota County, residents in the Manatee County portion of the town would save about $2.5 million a year in taxes.

In the reverse scenario, meaning the entire town was part of Manatee, Key taxpayers in Sarasota would pay an additional $6.2 million.

Now, town staff has started determining how those savings and costs would apply to specific properties. For example, staff has determined that an owner of a property valued at $517,439 on the Manatee County portion of the Key would pay $833.55 less per year in property taxes if incorporated into Sarasota County. These numbers are based on property taxes paid by owners of similarly valued properties in the Sarasota County portion of the Key. The information will be available on the new website, which Bullock hopes will be functional by early fall.

“I want it up and running well before any referendum,” he said.

Bullock is referring to a potential straw poll among Key voters to determine the public’s interest in the one-county initiative. Such

a referendum would require Town Commission approval. Bullock expects 2018 is the earliest a vote could take place.

Whether Key voters approve of the initiative or not, the decision to redraw the county line would ultimately be up to the state Legislature and require approval from the governor.

At a Barrier Islands Elected Officials meeting July 19, Bullock and Mayor Terry Gans delivered an update about the progress of the one-county discussion.

Gans repeated a familiar refrain on the subject: The location of the county line is a “historical accident,” and talks of redrawing it are still in early stages.

“We don’t know if or if not being split is best for Longboat Key and its citizens,” Gans said.

Although the duo is focusing on rentals right now, they have plans to extend their offerings.

Once Catts is done “scouting the area extensively,” he plans to offer guided tours. The guided tours will start around 8 a.m. and last for three hours.

All study, little action The first phase of the 20th traffic study in 10 years doesn’t give much hope for improvements at the two worst chokepoints — Gulf Drive and Cortez and U.S. 41 and Gulfstream-Fruitville.

ou would think we would have it figured out by now — what to do about traffic.

After all, taxpayers have paid for 19 transportation studies since 2007 to help decide what to do with transportation issues affecting the barrier islands and the nearby main land roadways.

But the studying goes on. In a memo dated June 15 to the Florida Department of Transportation, the engineering firm of Stantec issued Phase I of the latest round, this one called the Sarasota/ Manatee Barrier Islands Traffic Study.

If you go through Stantec’s 44-page report, it essentially summarizes why the 19 studies were conducted and says whether their conclusions are still relevant. It’s no surprise, of course, that some of the previous studies have sat on some government shelf for so long that their recommendations are obsolete.

Take the June 2007 study: “Development of Effective Strategies to Alleviate Traffic Congestion for Barrier Islands.”

It recommended helping alleviate congestion at St. Armands Circle by establishing North Adams and Madison drives as alternate routes around the circle. But Stantec’s new study concludes: “The St. Armands Circle bypass is no longer practical due to the construction of a new 500-space parking garage at the corner of North Adams and Madison drives.”

That same study recommended increasing the northbound road capacity of the roundabout on Gulf Drive at Bridge Street in Bradenton Beach to help alleviate congestion at the Gulf Drive and Cortez Road intersection. No surprise, Stantec says that idea is still relevant — but not likely to be done.

Nine years after that study, in 2016, another study recommended constructing a roundabout at Gulf Drive and Cortez, with a northbound-toeastbound bypass lane. But Stantec reports, based on discussions with FDOT, “the roundabout will not be installed … due to high right-of-way costs.”

Now let’s shift to the other nightmare chokepoints: The U.S. 41-Gulf Stream Avenue and U.S. 41 and Fruitville intersections. The conclusion is almost jaw-dropping: Stantec reports that a 2016 study focused on future traffic projections at those intersections and concluded — duh — future improvements would be needed. ing anxiously for relief at U.S. 41, Gulf Stream and Fruitville, Stantec’s Phase I report concludes, much to your dismay, no doubt: “The information presented in the project traffic report is relevant, but it is not within the scope of the Sarasota-Manatee Barrier Island study to re-evaluate intersection alternatives along U.S. 41 as part of the project.”

It’s difficult, based on the Phase I report, to be optimistic for change.

Campaign promise kept When Sarasota County School Board member Bridget Ziegler campaigned for election three years ago, one of her key platforms was transparency — more of it, especially when it came to the way the school board operated.

Give Ziegler credit: She has lived up to her promise — in spite of rigid resistance from three of her colleagues.

It wasn’t big news when it occurred, but it marked a dramatic change in school board protocol and transparency. As of June 20, a majority of school board members finally agreed to a change that Ziegler has lobbied for since her election in 2014: to move

the school board’s monthly afternoon workshops from a small conference room, where there was little room for the public to attend and observe, to the district’s much larger, regular board chambers. What’s more, the entire workshops are now televised, streamed live, video recorded and archived online. Previously, the afternoon workshops were only voice recorded.

This sounds like a minor achievement. But anyone familiar with the school board knows three of its members — Shirley Brown, Jane Goodwin and Caroline Zucker — often have bristled and resisted Ziegler’s positions and efforts to change the board’s habits.

They liked the workshop set-up — in a building away from the school board’s chambers, a place where there were few attendees and members sometimes behaved differently toward each other than in the televised board meetings.

For three years, Ziegler broached making the afternoon workshops as transparent as regular board meetings. Ziegler finally obtained the swing vote she needed when Brown agreed to open up the workshops if Ziegler and member Eric Robinson would attend a state-sponsored training program.

POSTSCRIPT ON HARMER’S HIRING: WE ERRED

It’s not productive to harp. But we need to correct and clarify some of our comments in this space last week regarding the Longboat Key Town Commission’s hiring of Tom Harmer as the town’s next manager.

To be clear, while we opined “how the town landed Harmer wasn’t exactly a model for open, public business,” we also should state we didn’t question whether Town Manager David Bullock followed the commission’s directions.

He did.

More important, we made an issue of: 1) Harmer signed his employment contract prior to the commission’s approval; and 2) there was nothing in the contract expressing Harmer’s hiring was subject to commission approval.

As Mayor Terry Gans and Bullock later pointed out, we failed to note that on the last page of Harmer’s contract there was a place for the mayor’s signature to ratify and complete the contract

(see box).

As Gans told us: “Harmer may have signed the contract, but there is a blank line on it which made the contract not official, not final until it was signed by the mayor of Longboat Key, and the mayor of Longboat Key was not going to sign it until there was commission approval given at a public meeting.”

Bullock also noted in an email: “As you know, a contract is not a contract until both parties sign it … When we present contracts to the commission they are generally signed by the other parties, and the commission is the last one to approve/disapprove.” We erred.

Regardless of our comments on how the process transpired — which Gans humorously described as asking, “Did the angels dance on a pin in a certain way?” — Longboat Key landed a proven, solid candidate in Tom Harmer. Congratulations to Bullock for recruiting Harmer. And … welcome, Mr. Harmer to the best small town in Florida.

ANARCHY ON GMD 11:00 p.m. — 700 block of St. Jude’s Drive Disturbance: An officer was dispatched to a possible road rage incident. The officer made contact with the complainant, who said a group of reckless motorcyclists approached his vehicle while he was driving north on GMD. He said the bikers yelled at him while passing his vehicle on the right. The caller said the group followed him to a residence where the subjects continued yelling and threatening him. When the Holiday Inn closed in 2003, people were concerned about the impact on the nearby businesses, such as Harry’s Continental Kitchen and Cannons Marina. Please see the Longboat Observer article dated Sept. 4, 2013, reporting that instead of suffering because of the Holiday Inn closing, these two businesses flourished. Excerpt: “The closing, [David] Miller says, “may have even been good for Cannons Marina. The people who live there now buy boats from us. The people who stayed at the Holiday Inn used to rent boats from us.”

give up the lifestyle here solely for the benefit of developers who would see this small barrier island changed forever.

Unfortunately, to support more shopping and restaurants on Longboat requires more people, and that leads to more density. To increase density means taller buildings and narrower setbacks. The result is more traffic and an environment more like Miami Beach.

A great number of the citizenry of our desirable island bought properties to live in with the expectation of peace and quiet.

Do they want Gulf of Mexico Drive lined with Zotas?

Our grassroots organization of Keep Longboat Special has heard loud and clear that the residents and property owners, in contrast to many businesses and developers, would like to maintain the low density, the current ambience and not add to the traffic congestion.

Voting residents have demonstrated repeatedly they don’t want more traffic, tall buildings, convention centers and increased density — most recently 78% against the Floridays’ hotel and 87% against the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort’s increased density.

In 2008, while we had a recession, people were concerned about the health of Longboat Key. It was noted that there is a need for a reasonable amount of tourism. That concern has now mostly disappeared.

Your July 6 editorial, “Preserve the 250 units,” makes it sound as if having the 250-unit tourism pool got us out of the 2008 recession.

Yet there has been only one request for units in nine years.

That was Zota — now the highest density property on Longboat Key with 37 units per acre on a property zoned for six units per acre.

When we voted for the 250 bank of units, we anticipated doling them out in small numbers to small hotels that needed a few more units to help them finance revitalizing their buildings. Instead, it has encouraged the massive concrete Zota building, followed by hoped-for plans for similar oversized endeavors by other zealous developers.

Though pitched to the community as fantastic for the island, these projects are clearly to benefit the developers.

Understandably, businesses and developers, including the Longboat Observer, would generally want more traffic, increased density and more people on Longboat Key to grow their businesses. Many people would also like to see more shopping and restaurant options locally. That is the capitalistic system that we all love and cherish and wouldn’t trade for anything.

JOSEPH GREGORZEK

Joseph Gregorzek, 80, of Perico Island, died June 22.

He was born in Nanticoke, Pa., on July 25, 1936, to the late Peter and Mary Gregorzek.

Mr. Gregorzek was a former resident of Connecticut, Vermont and New Jersey, and moved to Florida in 1999.

While living in New Britain, Conn., he was a state representative in the General Assembly for three terms, serving as a member of the Banking, Finance, State and Urban Development and the Transportation committees and was chairman of the Aeronautics Committee.

He was the past president of the New Britain Press Club while employed as a manager at the New Britain Herald and was also president of the New Britain Ski Club and Independent Slow Pitch League, secretary of the New Britain Young Democratic Club, former member of the New Britain Democratic Town Committee and the Charter Revision Committee.

Mr. Gregorzek was the chairman of the New Britain Fire Board and member of the New Britain Board of Police Commis-

sioners.

He was a Connecticut and Vermont real estate broker and licensed stock broker in Connecticut and New York.

In 1983, he left Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith in Hartford, Conn., and moved to Brownsville, Vt., to help develop a local ski area and served as executive vice president and general manager at Ascutney Mountain Resort.

During filming of “Funny Farm,” the resort was the host hotel for the cast and crew, which was a highlight of Mr. Gregorzek’s tenure there.

Mr. Gregorzek was the founder and chairman of the Connecticut River Valley Tourism Council, served on the boards of the Vermont Lodging and Restaurant Association, Mount Ascutney Hospital, Windsor Chamber of Commerce and member of the National Ski Areas Association.

In 1986, former Vermont Gov. Madeline Kunin appointed Mr. Gregorzek to her advisory council. He joined PaineWebber/UBS NYC in 1991 as the national marketing manager for Correspondent Services Corp. He retired in 2003. He attended CSSC and served in the U.S. Army. He was a longtime parishioner of Holy Cross Church in New Britain, Conn.

Whether playing gin rummy with his best friend, Joe Grano, cheering for the Boston Red Sox, New York Giants or UConn Huskies, fishing in Martha’s Vineyard, watching the sunset on Anna Maria Island or globetrotting with his wife, Gayle, Mr. Gregorzek lived an adventurous life.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Gayle; best friend of 45 years Joseph Grano; siblings Theodosia and Henry; and numerous nephews.

PHYLLIS KLAPMAN

Phyllis Klapman, 89, of Longboat Key, died July 20.

She was born on April 7, 1928, in Chicago.

Mrs. Klapman had a career as a speech pathologist and was a volunteer at Mote Marine Laboratory. Her greatest joy was her family and their Sunday dinners.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Lil Lebovitz, and her beloved husband, Aaron.

She is survived by her daughters, Kim Sheintal and Liz Klaber; their spouses; two grandchildren Mara Daniel and Liana Bryant; their spouses; five great grandchildren; and numerous extended family members.

Elio Martina, 94, of LaGrange, Ill., died July 17.

He was originally from Cleveland.

Mr. Martina was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He loved to travel and spent many winters on Longboat Key. He was an architect for many years at the University of Chicago.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Martina; and brother Arthur Martina.

He is survived by his children; Heidi Rogers, James Martina and Michelle Hullihan; their spouses; and five grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Carmelite Monastery, 949 River Road, Des Plaines, IL 60016.

he steady rain and gray clouds almost put a damper on Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium’s Mommy and Me Camp.

Almost.

By the time the campers were ready to explore Sarasota Bay on July 20, the rain turned to a drizzle and the sun started breaking through the clouds.

The rain was over by the time campers had dip nets in their hands.

Campers and “their favorite adults” took to the water to search for marine life. Campers found shells, crabs and other sea treasures.

Mote’s Mommy and Me Camp is for those aged 2 to 5.

Classes are offered every week, whether it be through summer camps or outreach programs.

Aging in Paradise steps up to prevent falls The resource center hosted its first Falls Risk and Prevention Forum on July 19.

In 2016, Longboat Key Fire Rescue responded to 1,604 calls. Of those, about 600 calls were from people who then were taken to the hospital.

Of those calls, some came from Longboaters who had fallen and couldn’t get up — 250 to be exact.

In an effort to reduce the number of falls, and the calls for help that come with them, Aging in Paradise Resource Center hosted its first Falls Risk and Prevention Forum.

Twelve people attended the July 19 event that featured three speakers, including Longboat Key Fire Rescue Chief Paul Dezzi.

Falls, Dezzi said, make up a large portion of the department’s calls for assistance. And those calls come from homes, rarely from businesses, such as grocery stores.

To assist residents, the Fire Department offers to conduct a home fall-prevention survey.

During the surveys, Dezzi and his team often find simple fixes that can prevent falls. Tips include: n Move furniture so you have a clear path. n Remove throw rugs or use double-sided tape so rugs don’t move.

Fire Chief Paul Dezzi reminded the audience that the fire station is open 24/7. Residents should never be afraid of inconveniencing emergency responders. n Never use a chair as a stepstool. n Install grab bars next to the bathtub and toilet. n Don’t wear socks on tile floors. n Install automatic night lights throughout your home. n Evaluate the medications you take.

But what’s most important, Dezzi said, is not to delay calling for help. Falls can result in injuries such as spine, hip, arm, leg, ankle, pelvis and hand fractures, or more serious injuries to the head. Death, also, is a possibility.

“On Longboat Key, when people fall, a lot wait to call,” he said.

Brain Health, addressed balance and medications, saying balance is necessary to simply walk, get up from a chair and climb stairs.

Certain medications, and the amount of medications, can increase the risk of falling.

“We’re much more likely to fall if we’re on multiple medications,” she said.

Forty percent of older adults

take five or more medications each day, and as people get older, their bodies metabolize medicine differently.

Some medicines that can increase the risk of falling are antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, opioids, NSAIDS, heart and sleep medications, blood pressure medications, antihistamines and anticholinergics.

And, in addition to the medicines, their side effects can increase the risk of falling, too.

Common side effects include: n dizziness; n lightheadedness; n drowsiness; n delirium; n impaired alertness; and n impaired judgment.

Sleeping pills increase the risk of falling as well. If someone takes a sleeping pill but doesn’t get eight hours of sleep, they could still be groggy in the morning.

“A lot of my patients fall in the driveway because they’re still groggy from taking sleeping pills the night before,” Frieling said.

Frieling said it’s worth it to talk to your doctor to make sure you still need all the medications you’re taking. If you do, see if the dose can be lowered. Take medications with meals and change the time of day when the drug is taken.

Andy Elton, a physical therapist at Fitness Quest Physical Therapy in Sarasota, walked the audience through some exercises that can help with balance.

“We’ve all fallen,” he said. “It just gets harder and harder.”

The club recently announced changes to its meeting schedule.

From now on, the club will meet for breakfast at the Tavern and Whiskey Bar on the first Thursday of each month. There will be no meetings on the second and fourth Thursdays. The third Thursdays will be luncheon at various restaurants, such as The Lazy Lobster. On the fifth Thursday, if applicable, the club will gather at a home or restaurant for a wine and cheese social.
