Saving seabirds While searching for scallops on Aug. 26 at the Great Scallop Search of 2017, some volunteer scientists found an animal not on their search list. While scoping Sarasota Bay, five volunteers, Federico Vazquez, Brooke Langston, Tara Goldstein, Peter Peduzzi and Alyssa Avalos, found a pelican tangled in fishing line. The group rescued the pelican and took it to Save our Seabirds, where it is recovering.

FLOODING

Heavy rains cover some Key streets W

ith rainfall totals in some places on Longboat Key reaching into double digits, street flooding was reported in several places around the island this week.

Town Manager Dave Bullock said three-day rain totals ranged from 7.9 inches to nearly 17 inches, with mid-island areas receiving the most rainfall.

The 5000 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive flooded, as did the area of GMD near the Zota Beach Resort, but the water was draining. Some areas on the north end of the island also saw street flooding.

Bullock said blocked storm drains were possibly to blame along GMD, but he also attributed low tides at the height of the rainfall for allowing standing water to drain.

“Overall, we fared pretty well compared to some other areas,” Bullock said.

T

he town of Longboat Key, in the form of its Development Review Committee, will discuss and make comments on the redevelopment plan for the former Colony Beach & Tennis Resort at 9 a.m. Friday in Town Hall.

The committee, which consists of Planning, Zoning & Building Director Alaina Ray, Planner Maika Arnold, Planner Steve Schield, Fire Marshal Lou Gagliardi and Public Works Director Juan Florensa, will comment on Unicorp’s plans following an initial review of the proposal. The meeting is open to the public, though members of the public cannot participate.

After what could be a series of similar meetings, the proposal will go before the Planning and Zoning Board. The board will review the plan, then forward its recommendation to the Town Commission.

Here’s where the proposal stands:

REMAINING UNITS Of the Colony’s existing 237 units, Unicorp owns 25.

Whittall’s company needs 90% approval from unit owners to terminate the Colony Association, which is essential to pressing ahead with development. Whittall said his company is moving forward with buying units and working to finalize a deal with Andy Adams, who controls 75 units.

Speaking on behalf of Aquarius residents, Frank Morneau this week said his community has decided that moving forward with Unicorp’s new proposal is in its best interests and that of the entire town.

On the other side of the property, Tencon Beach Association President Dennis Haley has reservations.

In April, Whittall’s company, Unicorp National Developments Inc., entered into a contract with residents of Aquarius and Tencon. The contract extends “membership privileges” at a future resort on the property.

In July, Whittall submitted a plan that calls for a 166-room five-star hotel, to be operated by St. Regis, and 102 residential condominiums, for a combined 268 units. But, the July plan negates the building setbacks agreed upon in the April contract, which specifies no building will be constructed within 70 feet from the property lines.

Unicorp’s new proposal includes building setbacks of 150 feet from the beachfront line and 45 feet from the neighboring properties.

After discussing the proposal with Haley, Whittall said he is working with his engineers to increase the building setbacks from the Tencon property line. Haley did not return multiple calls seeking comment.

Longboat Key’s Development Review Committee will talk about the Colony redevelopment plan on Friday. Not everyone is sold on the project yet.

LITIGATION CLEARED Earlier this month, Whittall announced clearing a hurdle with another group of stakeholders — the Colony Association. On Aug. 7, Whittall and Colony Association President Jay Yablon announced the end of yearslong litigation between Whittall’s company and the association.

“All litigation has finally been resolved after seven years and brought to an amicable peaceful end that paves the way for a new resort to be developed at the former Colony,” a joint statement from Whittall and Yablon read. “This settlement is effective immediately. It is not contingent or dependent on any future events.”

Last fall, Whittall agreed to pay Colony unit owners between $130,000 to $200,000 per unit. Despite the failure of the March referendum that would have allowed the development of Whittall’s initial proposal for the site, Whittall affirmed at a meeting between himself and the Colony Association’s development committee in April that he will keep intact the agreed-upon price for units. Sales agreements, though, have not been executed on the outstanding units.

Whittall also agreed to dismiss the appeal of the recent recreational lease ruling in exchange for the Colony Association waiving its sanctions recovery, resulting in final closure of those disputes.

BALLROOM CONCERNS Despite Whittall scaling down the building heights and density from his original proposal, Preserve Longboat President David Lapovsky said his group remains concerned about aspects of the plan, including the size of the resort’s proposed meeting spaces.

The size of the resort’s ballroom, which Lapovsky often refers to as a “conference center,” was a central issue in Preserve Longboat’s campaign against Whittall’s initial proposal, which called for a 20,000-squarefoot ballroom.

The size has been reduced by half, but Lapovsky noted the new plan also includes 6,700 square feet of meeting rooms and 2,750 square feet of board room space.

Lapovsky is concerned the additional square footage will be used to augment ballroom space, coming close to the original 20,000 square feet. Crowds and traffic are the group’s key objections.

Whittall said potential uses for the combined 9,450 square feet are still being determined.

Longboat Realtor plans to run for vacant House seat Longboat Key Realtor James Buchanan said last week he intends to run for the Florida House seat being vacated by Alex Miller, effective Sept. 1.

Miller, a freshman representative from District 72, cited family and business commitments for her resignation after one session in Tallahassee.

Buchanan, son of U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Longboat Key, had previously declared to run in State House District 71 but switched districts after Miller’s resignation.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott will call a special election for the District 72 race. No date has been set.

In a statement, Buchanan said: “This is a tremendous opportunity to serve. For me, it has and always will be about service.

We have the opportunity in this special election to help keep our state on course to be the nation’s leader in economic growth, education, innovation and so much more. I’m ready to get to work for Sarasota and all of Florida.’’

Buchanan founded James Buchanan Realty on Longboat Key. Libertarian Alison Foxall has also said she will run in the special election.

Turtle Watch plans display, education event on Labor Day A Labor Day sea turtle awareness event is planned from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 4 outside of Longboat Key’s Publix, 525 Bay Isles Parkway. The Longboat Key Turtle Watch will host the free educational event that will include interactive exhibits for children and adults. The exhibit will further participants’ knowledge about Longboat Key’s nesting sea turtles.

Longboat police aid Mote in two turtle recovery cases Longboat Key police were called to assist last week with two turtle incidents.

On Aug. 18, police were contacted by Mote Marine Institute to help rescue a turtle that had been hit by a boat. The turtle was rescued in the Jewfish Key area.

On Aug. 21, Mote Marine requested help to recover the body of a dead turtle. Together, Longboat Police and Mote officials recovered the dead turtle in the canal near the 700 block of St. Judes Drive North. It will be examined by Mote scientists for cause of death.

We talked with Phillips about involvement and philanthropy both inside the town’s government and outside.

Do you think people know how much clubs such as Kiwanis and Garden Club do?

I don’t think they do. I think there is a perception that Garden Club is, because of the name, a garden club and a group of ladies who putter around and cultivate orchids and things like that. The fact is, most of them don’t. But, we are extremely active in fundraising, and all of that money goes to scholarships and grants.

A recent example was a thank you letter we received from Save Our Seabirds. It makes a difference to our nonprofit organization helping other nonprofit organizations be successful in what they’re doing. Two of our more recent award recipients are now working on their Ph.D.s in sustainable farming, in remediation of tainted soils and enhancing food supplies through aquaculture. We’re helping educate young people who are doing groundbreaking work that is going to positively impact us on Longboat Key. They don’t see the Garden Club as a service club, but we are, and last year we gave $50,000 in grants and scholarships.

Susan Phillips wears many hats around Longboat Key. She said if more people joined nonprofit clubs, the island could do so much good.

and in town government?

I think largely that disinterest, if you want to call it that, for the town meetings is that most of our residents, from my interactions with them at Publix and various places, are very satisfied with what their local government is providing to them in services. We have the best firerescue. Everyone raves about the fire-rescue and the outreach programs that they’ve started with the Care Program. We are one of the safest cities of our size in the United States.

Who can complain about that?

Garbage [collection] twice a week, our roadways are beautiful

and well-maintained, we have gorgeous beaches, though we’re constantly working on them, so I don’t think our residents have anything that drives them here to demand better services. And when they do, we’re proactive in taking care of those issues. I have this different perspective because I work here, so I’m on this side, and then at 5 o’clock, I’m one of them.

Do you think there’s a good portion of the island population that is involved outside of the government in clubs or activities like tennis?

I think everyone here is involved

in some social activity and a group, but whether they’re involved actively in a nonprofit organization like Garden Club, Kiwanis, something like that, I don’t think that they are because I know my membership in Garden Club is between 150 and 175.

Kiwanis is less than 50. Rotary is similar, I would imagine, but I don’t know the number, so that certainly doesn’t represent a big part of our population. I wish it did. I really wish it did. We could really do so much good.

Do you think there’s anything that would help people to join organizations?

My husband is president of Kiwanis, and we puzzle over it all the time. We [the Garden Club] try to engage people by appealing to that sense of fun and interesting field trips and programs at our meetings. I think that engages them — going to something where they’re guaranteed they’re going to smile, they’re going to learn something, they’re going to make a friend.

I had this one [Garden Club member] who told her husband that she hadn’t met anyone here and she really hadn’t made any friends here. She said, “If we don’t make some friends in the next few months maybe we should look somewhere else.” My friend brought her to the Garden Club and within the first year I had her on the board. We’re very good friends now, and she has a whole circle of friends and she wouldn’t leave Longboat Key if you dragged her out. But these are ladies who want to make friends. They didn’t come here to sit in their living rooms and watch TV. How have you seen involvement change around the island since you became a resident?

The change in involvement is just through attrition on the one end and growth and new members on the other end. But fortunately, as people move off the island or pass, you know we do have new people who are stepping up, joining, taking on leadership positions, coming up with new ideas to keep the organizations young and energetic.

What are the biggest things coming up for Longboat?

project. Having that asset on Longboat Key, which is at no cost to the taxpayers, will bring about a larger sense of community giving the residents here a place to gather for events and arts and adult education. It keeps people on the island, and if you think of the events that can be held there that people currently go off the island for.

They pair that with dinner out, a few shopping errands, well now we’re keeping that business on the island. People say all the time we need more restaurants here. Well if we are staying on the island, we can support more restaurants here. So it’s good for business.

The undergrounding project and the fiber, that’s also huge for the people who are here now and the people who are going to be here 40 years from now. The fiber that we are putting in now under the passes and with the underground project, it is going to give us islandwide Wi-Fi and lots of technological advances that will set us apart from other premier communities.

One of the most exciting things that people don’t think is achievable, but I know it’s achievable, is the one county.

The disparity that exists for our taxpayers on the Manatee side of the island, there is almost double the tax rate, and then you pair that with the services that we received from the two counties.

The preliminary findings indicate a huge cost savings could be achieved for our residents, but the commission will decide when, and if, pursuit of the one county study is moved to the next level.

Longboat leaders pleased with Sarasota traffic solution The Sarasota City Commission voted unanimously Aug. 21 to undertake a series of changes to the U.S. 41-Gulfstream-Fruitville road network.

or Tom Freiwald, Sarasota’s decision earlier this month to rework a key intersection matches “the spirit’’ of many changes his organization has promoted to smooth traffic flow between mainland and barrier island destinations.

For years, Freiwald, chairman of The Longboat Key Revitalization Task Force, has advocated

for simple, easy-to-reverse adaptations to roadways with the goal of making traveling to and from Longboat Key, Lido Key, St. Armands Key and Bird Key easier, especially during the winter months.

The idea is to try things before committing to permanent solutions such as roundabouts that may or may not work.

“Don’t put in the statues and the fountains and the curbs,” Freiwald said. “That becomes

almost impossible to change.”

On Aug. 21, the Sarasota City Commission split with City Manager Tom Barwin, voting unanimously to undertake a series of changes to the U.S. 41-Gulfstream-Fruitville road network.

Those changes include a third northbound lane on U.S. 41, a third left-turn lane from eastbound Gulfstream onto U.S. 41 and a pedestrian crosswalk signal near First Street and Ritz-Carlton Drive on U.S. 41. The state would also reduce the speed limit along that segment of U.S. 41 to 35 mph.

“I think it’s terrific that the commissioners in Sarasota decided to do something about it,” Freiwald said.

Florida Department of Transportation District 1 Secretary L.K. Nandam made clear that the planned changes are, in essence, a placeholder until the state can install a roundabout at the intersection in 2019.

Others on Longboat Key and elsewhere on the barrier islands had nothing but thanks for Sarasota’s decision.

“I’m grateful that the City Commission found a way to enhance both pedestrian access and vehicle movement,” Town Manager Dave Bullock said.

“That kind of balancing of these two things is what will continue to make Sarasota a great city.”

Nandam said he hoped the new traffic configuration would be in place before the end of the year.

Barrier island residents and government officials for years have been urging for changes to mainland traffic patterns that affect them. Traffic, especially during season, can back up across Ringling Causeway all the way to St. Armands Circle, they said.

In an email to the Sarasota

City Commission, Diana Corrigan, executive director of the St. Armands Circle Merchants Association, said the delays on the road can often be intolerable.

“I have a number of meetings during the week that I attend, which are located in the city. For me to be able to get to the meeting on time, I must leave my office 45 minutes to 1 hour, prior to the meeting time. Coming back, I experience almost the same challenge. It’s just not as bad.”

A week earlier, Barwin said concerns about in-season traffic added up to a fraction of the overall issue.

“All of this angst is understandable, but it really amounts to about 5% of the time,” Barwin said. “You don’t, I think, dramatically change the character of an urbanized downtown and create really irresponsible pedestrian safety risks for 5% of the time.”

Residents from Longboat, as well as Lido Key, St. Armands Key and Bird Key, appeared at the commission meeting to support the proposed changes, including Mayor Terry Gans.

Gans referred to the Sarasota City Commission’s decision as a “shared success.” Along with crediting Key staff and residents for their involvement, Gans said he appreciates Sarasota City Commission members for “having open minds where reality was able to overcome philosophy.”

The mayor thanked Commissioner Hagen Brody for getting the item on the meeting’s agenda, as well as Commissioner Willie Shaw and Mayor Shelli Freeland Eddie. “Let’s build on this spirit of cooperation,” he said.

The following is reprinted from the Aug. 24 Sarasota Observer.

W

e cannot give up.

Every day, it seems, you hear your family members, friends and co-workers lament — with obvious angst and distress — the state of America.

Surely you’ve had the conversation: “What’s happening? Where does this end up?”

Wrote a friend recently: “It is getting harder to recognize the country we grew up in. Like all societies, we have a history of conflict, but what does the future look like in the face of white nationalists battling left-wing, identity-politics extremists and an absence of moral leadership?”

Another: “Everywhere you turn, it seems we are ruled by the minority mob of the day, whether pulling down statues, preventing speakers at universities, Congress dysfunction … Then the media pumping up these minorities to look like majorities. Nothing presented in real world perspective.”

Another told me he can’t bear to tune in to the national news.

It’s an endless carpet-bombing of strife, confrontation, destruction, dysfunction, hate, blood. He said his wife, equally distressed, suggested the idea having dual citizenship in another country.

“Why would she even think that?” he said.

Because she, like so many, are battle and war fatigued. Not because of the war on terror, but because of the social and political wars at home. We have neo-Nazi-, antifa-, Black Lives Matter-, fake news-, Washington, D.C., swamp-inflicted PTSD. AT WAR AND DON’T KNOW IT

What, indeed, has happened to the country in which we grew up?

The country where we all stood at the beginning of the day, from elementary through high school, and recited the Pledge of Allegiance — “one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all”? The country where we learned English grammar, how to diagram sentences and write in cursive? Where we learned manners, courtesy, respect and the Golden Rule? Where parents taught you to say “Yes, ma’am” and “No, ma’am” and “Yes, sir” and “No, sir”? Where sisters taught their younger brothers before their first high school dates: Always open the door for the lady? Where our outlook was that we could do anything — reach the moon, Mars! — if we put our mind to it and worked? Where tattoos were practically taboo?

What happened?

In an interview with a Civil War scholar, the scholar noted that not since the Civil War has the national discord reached the level it is today. “We’re in a civil war,” a friend lamented, “we just don’t know it.”

Or we’re spiraling in that direction ever faster.

Over the past 17 years we have seen what feels like and is unprecedented, visceral contempt for our presidents — Bush II, Obama and Trump, especially Trump. If you try dispassionately to observe the events coming out of the nation’s capital since Trump’s election, it’s difficult not to believe there is a concerted and orchestrated effort on both sides, and in the D.C. press, to thwart and topple Donald Trump. It’s more vicious than we’ve ever witnessed.

Sure, Trump doesn’t help himself. On Aug. 21, he delivers a commanding speech befitting the president of the United States. On Aug. 22, he goes off the teleprompter and the rails and falls back to street fighter mode — unbefitting of the president of the United States. He has a compulsion to get in the last word, the last dig.

He’s not helping.

MEDIA AIDS AND ABETS

Neither are the national news media and social media. The national news media (it’s more like national opinion media) fuel the nation’s fissures with their 24-7 efforts to fill airtime. They thrive on conflict and confrontation. People smashing windows and punching one another, and strident liberals and conservatives yelling at each other — they make great TV. They attract eyeballs.

And these days the national news media are all about the eyeballs and clicks. Newsrooms have monitors showing what stories generate website clicks; it’s all about the numbers. Americans with our smartphones are addicted to mainlining news.

This only aids and abets the nation’s strife. The fringe extremists and agitators crave attention. They love it when newsies show up with cameras and stick a microphone in front of their foulmouthed mugs.

Social media inflames them even more. It’s the gas that spreads the hellfire. And there’s no turning back. Social media is ingrained in our culture. It gives everyone a platform to be ugly, incendiary and spread their extremist, political venereal diseases at the speed of light.

All of this, at times, especially since Trump’s inauguration, has felt overwhelming, creating a feeling of helplessness.

We must turn the tide.

It’s difficult to think Donald Trump can do what Ronald Reagan did — provide the leadership that resurrects the America we know and love. But he issued a call Aug. 21 that is a start. They were his finest words.

To restore the America where we grew up, the silent majority; the law-abiding, patriotic Americans; the people who do what is right; the people who believe in the duty of good citizenship; the people who try to practice the Golden Rule, who live by the 10 Commandments and who pray must remain steadfast and have faith. Continue to love and teach our children and grandchildren what is right. Teach them the Marine code: To do the right thing, the right way, for the right reasons.

How we live our lives is the best way to end this strife.

CORTEZ BRIDGE: MAKE IT A FIXED SPAN This will be interesting: The Florida Department of Transportation’s open house and presentation Thursday on what to do with the Cortez Bridge.

Replace it with another drawbridge?

Or construct a fixed-span bridge?

Unless the solar eclipse rearranged the emotional wiring of longtime Anna Maria Islanders and Cortez Village residents, you already know how this conversation is going to go: No fixed-span bridge!

We’ve seen this movie three times. In 1989, the islanders and Cortez Village residents fought (and won) FDOT’s attempts to shift to the fixed span. And surely, many Longboaters remember Sarasota’s Bridge Wars in the early 2000s — a 10-year conflict that resulted in what is now an iconic signature for Sarasota that even some of the antifixed spanners appreciate.

In 2008, FDOT broached constructing a fixed span for the Manatee Avenue bridge. The usual staunch protectors of nostalgia lobbied against it. But in FDOT’s survey and public-hearing results, opponents to a fixed span were in the minority — 25% wanted a draw bridge. A new, high fixed-span bridge is just now reaching the design phase.

Given the dire traffic congestion that occurs at the west end of the Cortez Bridge, logic dictates avoiding anything that creates more backups, e.g. a drawbridge. But Thursday’s hearing will raise the expected objections: The grade of a fixed span will be too high and aesthetically obtrusive for such a short distance.

To which, we would say: Look at the Ringling Bridge’s grade. It’s high, but it has become a huge attraction for walkers, joggers and bikers, not to mention a joy to take in the view when you reach its crest in your vehicle.

Plus, a fixed span will be far more economical for taxpayers in the long run. It makes the most sense.

Unfortunately, a new Cortez Bridge won’t solve the bottlenecks at the intersection of Gulf Drive and Cortez Road.

That’s a larger topic.

But perhaps it’s an opportune time to raise it. After all, it takes a decade to build a bridge.

Why not discuss the idea of a second bridge that would connect, say, the Coquina Beach boat ramp to 115th Street West? That would create a throughway that would avoid Gulf Drive and Cortez Road, allowing traffic to flow uninterrupted to and from West Bradenton to Longboat Key.

THAT’S SOME LEGACY So now the Sarasota County Commission wants another $65 million to acquire 119 more acres of railroad track and right of way and then upgrade the property to extend the county’s Legacy Trail from Culverhouse Park to Fruitville Road.

That would take the total cost for what would become an 18-mile trail to $102.5 million of taxpayer money for a bike and walking trail.

To fund the $65 million that’s needed, Sarasota County voters will be asked to approve a bond referendum in the November 2018 general election. County staffers say paying off the bonds would result in a millage increase of 0.07, or $14 a year on $200,000 of taxable property value.

That doesn’t sound like much. But if your home is valued at, say, $2 million, that bike trail would cost you $140 more a year.

Expect an all-out PR campaign in favor of the popular trail leading up to the referendum. But how do you justify $65 million more for a “want” when you compare it to so many other “needs”?

In the middle of June, 176 least tern adults laid 88 nests and were raising 19 chicks. The colony was growing. But then, a cat showed up on June 28.

The next day, eight chicks were gone and 25 nests were abandoned.

Gradually, the nest count decreased. Two weeks after the initial cat sighting, the colony was down to 33 nests. Another

Greg Taylor, shorebird project coordinator of Audubon Florida, saw a brief glimpse of the cat.

After his sighting, Taylor saw tracks in the following days and said the town of Longboat Key went door to door to talk to people who lived in the area. Taylor isn’t sure whether the cat was feral, but cat owners in the area said they kept their pets indoors.

coast that they just can’t deal with it.”

Stu Wilson, a Sarasota resident and birdwatcher who frequents Longboat Key, said because Longboat Key is so narrow there’s less space for the shorebirds to nest, which makes them more susceptible to such things as beach raking or high tides.

To help keep shorebirds safe, Wilson recommends people avoid running through a nesting colony and not leave trash on the beach. In addition, he said keeping pets indoors will be beneficial.

Ginaven echoes those feelings.

“Cats are just devastating when they’re outdoors,” he said.

“They should all be indoors. I mean, I had cats myself and love them, but you should keep them indoors. Even if they’re well fed, they will kill birds, and they’ll bring one back home to show the owners their prize.”

This colony isn’t, and won’t be, the only colony that struggles.

Taylor said he thinks a raccoon could be responsible for the failing of a snowy plover nest on the south end of the island. Ginaven said black skimmers nested near the least terns and disappeared around the same time.

“It’s sad when that happens,” Ginaven said. “When you’ve got such a good colony, and it may deter them from coming back next year. We’ll find out, I guess, next April.”

On June 28, a cat showed up near the bird colony.

From then on, the colony dwindled.

Taylor said the cat is the most likely explanation for the dwindling colony. Once the cat showed up, the birds weren’t able to raise any chicks to adulthood. The only chicks to survive were those that could already fly.

Cats are second to habitat loss in terms of effects on birds, Taylor said. Every summer, least terns, which weigh a half gram, fly to Florida from the northern coast of South America, which is about 1,000 miles.

“They work so hard to come here and make families,” Taylor said.

“I think it’s just pretty sad for a single cat to prevent them from doing that this year, and they go home without any babies.”

Whitney Beach resident John Ginaven checked the least tern colony every three days. Although he never saw the cat, he heard about it and upon checking the colony, he found only two least terns still on site.

“It seemed like it was too empty, too fast,” he said.

Taylor said it was unusual for the colony to show up and be as large as it was. Least terns have been a threatened species in Florida since 1975.

“Right now, 80% of all least terns in Florida don’t nest on the beach,” Taylor said. “They nest on flat gravel rooftops and that’s because there’s so much development and disturbance on the

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Ruth Tiller; and brothers James Wilson Teller Jr. and William Thomas Tiller.

She is survived by brother Chris Tiller.

John Stephenson was born on Sept. 30, 1938, in Lima, Ohio, to the late Elbert and Pauline Stephenson.

HILDA TAYLOR LAURENCE

Hilda Taylor Laurence, 90, of Longboat Key, and Forest Hills, Tenn., died Aug. 9.

Mrs. Laurence was a native of Detroit. She was the daughter of the late George William Martin and Alice Taylor Martin. She was born on Sept. 25, 1926, across the street from another toddler, L.G., who would become her husband. They married on April 13, 1946, and they spent the next 71 years together.

During their seven decades together, Mr. and Mrs. Laurence had three children and had the opportunity to travel the world, especially Europe.

Mr. and Mrs. Laurence built their family home in Nashville in the early 1960s. They were members of First Presbyterian Church of Nashville, Brentwood Country Club and Hillwood Country Club, where Mrs. Laurence was once the nine-hole golf champion.

Mrs. Laurence volunteered at Vanderbilt University Medical Center for more than 20 years.

Mr. Stephenson grew up in Salem, Ohio, graduating from Salem High School in 1957 where he was a star basketball player.

He was employed by Sekely Tool and Manufacturing for 20 years.

He and his wife, Doris, moved to Sarasota where they owned and operated the Midnight Pass Marina and Pub on Siesta Key for several years. Mr. Stephenson was also employed at the Resort at Longboat Key Club.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Sarasota. His favorite charities were Tidewell Hospice of Sarasota and Salem High Alumni Association.

Mr. Stephenson is survived by his wife of 57 years, Doris McNamee; two daughters, Judy Jones and Joan Putrino; five grandchildren; and a niece and a nephew.

NOT MY BOAT 3:10 p.m. – Longboat Police headquarters Public service: A man who recently sold his boat and trailer sought help from police in stopping a stream of toll bills connected to his former property.

The man told police the new owner was improperly using the old license plate on the trailer, resulting in mailed toll bills from Florida’s Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The man asked for a police report to help substantiate his claim with the state.

The responding officer found a man with three dogs who had just left the beach. He said he was waiting for his wife to pick him up and didn’t realize dogs were not allowed. He was given a verbal warning and told about the town’s dog-authorized parks.

An officer allowed the tourists to charge their phone in his patrol car to call the rental company, which sent someone to help.

Hooked on Mote Some Longboat Key residents have found a calling volunteering at Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium facilities.

“I’m a champion of the underdog,” she said. “So, the ‘ugly’ moray is my favorite, because I defend him.”

The moray eel is not even green.

“No, his body is blue, and he’s covered in yellow slime and nature provides that so he can slither in and out of small spaces without getting hurt,” she said. “When they [Mote visitors] hear that, then they become interested. He’s not ugly anymore. He’s an animal of interest, so that’s why I think he’s my favorite.”

For the past 20 years, Ross, a Longboat Key resident, has been slowly filling her mind with these animal facts. After moving to Longboat from Long Island, Ross was looking for ways to get involved.

Her background is in finance, and her position in New York was intense. When she moved, she was bereft of things to do.

“I mean, look at this weather.

Am I going to be cooped up and be on the computer? Forget it,” she said.

So, she went to Mote and signed up for volunteer training.

Her story isn’t uncommon.

Many of Mote’s volunteers come from Longboat Key, but not all of them thought Mote would be their volunteer home.

Gwen Ross has been a Mote volunteer for 20 years. She calls Mote an organism of its own because it is always growing. Frank Puett moved to Longboat Key less than two years ago. On his first visit, Puett said he thought Mote was just an aquarium, but through volunteering he learned that isn’t the case.

was hooked.

Likewise, Frank Puett moved to Longboat less than two years ago.

He visited Mote and assumed it was just an aquarium.

But then he signed up to volunteer and realized how much more there was to Sarasota’s aquarium. He didn’t know scientists were working in the laboratory to replenish coral reefs or researching sharks and eels.

For Claussen, that’s what makes Mote the institution that it is.

“One of the things that I do love about it is that it is a research facility, and it’s not just a tourist attraction or animal display area,” she said. “It really has a very important mission, and I think that’s so important.”

Without backgrounds in

marine science, Ross, Puett and Claussen have caught on quickly to the marine way. After their interviews, Mote staff trains volunteers before sending them out into the marine-enthused chaos.

“You really don’t have to have any kind of background in the marine sciences,” Claussen said.

“You just have to have an interest.”

Training has changed over the years. When Ross went through training, she had to take an open book test before shadowing a veteran volunteer for six weeks.

While today’s new volunteers do shadow veteran volunteers, the test is no longer a prerequisite.

Puett, who most recently went through training, was given a packet of information on fish,

animals and exhibits following his interview. Volunteers also get emails throughout the week with updates.

But their training never really ends.

At the beginning of each shift, volunteers watch a short presentation where they learn something new about one of the animals or get updates on new exhibits. After that, the docents head out to their assigned stations. They spend 30 minutes at an exhibit before rotating with a fellow docent.

But don’t let that routine fool you. Mote’s volunteer experience is diverse, including cashiers, greeters, member specialists, education assistants, fisheries assistants or animal husbandry volunteers. Some don’t even work at Mote. They travel with the Mote Mobile Exhibit and the Sarasota Bay Explorer tour guides.

“When I first went to find out about volunteering, I thought I would be doing something behind the scenes, like proofreading newsletters, but when it came around to doing the interview, I caught myself wanting to be a guide for the visitors,” Claussen said.

But it’s not just the information that keeps the docents invested.

Being with the visitors is what’s so rewarding, the three docents said.

During their shifts, the docents share animal facts and some of Mote’s history with visitors.

On a recent shift, Puett met a teenage girl who was hoping to major in marine biology. For Puett, the opportunity to encourage someone’s passion is a privilege.

“I just love the environment,” Puett said. “I hope that I will never get tired of it. But, I also enjoy interacting with people, seeing the excitement that they have for what’s going on here, and they share that with me. It’s a very enjoyable experience.”

Whether it be swapping animal facts with Mote’s youngest patrons or informing parents that a portion of their admission goes back to research, the docents thrive off hearing how much families enjoy Mote.

“When I hear that, that’s my payment, and that’s why I can’t let go,” Ross said. “I just keep coming back.”

Scallop Search weathers storm

T

he clouds were dark, but no rain was falling as volunteers of the Great Scallop Search of 2017 ventured out on Sarasota Bay. But then thunder rumbled overhead. It started to drizzle.

A few minutes later, the rain picked up, but the volunteers persisted.

The scallop search, a no-harvest event, took place Aug. 26 at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron.

Despite the thunderstorm, volunteers continued their search

sea grass where volunteers were searching for scallops. But he was still hopeful.

“Despite the challenging weather, they can still do a fine search,” he said.

And search they did. Although only half of the 130 people who signed up showed up, the citizenscientists found two live scallops and about a dozen recently live adult scallop shells, which shows that a small number of scallops survived recent bouts of red tide.
