raising money to relocate the two cottages, which were built in the 1930s as part of the Whitney Resort, to make them a headquarters for the Historical Society.

Now, Drake is one step closer to that goal. On Aug. 10, the larger of the two cottages was moved to its new location, a 0.44-acre plot at 521 Broadway St. The smaller cottage followed on Tuesday.

“I’ve never had a doubt that it was going to happen,” Drake said.

“I couldn’t be happier.”

Drake contracted Johnson Housemoving to relocate the cottages to the new site, about

a quarter of a mile from the former arts center property. For the move, the larger cottage was separated into two pieces and reattached at its new location.

At 521 Broadway St., the smaller cottage, which is about 380 square feet, will one day be used as a museum for the society’s materials, including artifacts and photos. Drake envisions the larger, 1,100-square-foot cottage as a place for gatherings and meetings, as well as a space for the Historical Society to conduct its programs.

group LBK North began a public discussion about the possibility of the town relocating the larger of the two cottages to a former gas station property across the street from Drake’s proposed location.

That site is no longer available.

Vice Mayor Ed Zunz said he sees the move as a positive change.

“I think it’s good that (the cottages are) being saved,” Zunz said.

“This is certainly the second-best arrangement. I hope it works out well.”

Drake emphasized that there is still a lot of work to do.

“Donations are key,” he said.

The Historical Society’s initiative includes two phases of fundraising. The goal of the first phase is to gather $100,000 for moving costs and securing the cottages on foundations on the new site.

As of this week, the organization had raised $61,000. Drake aims to have the new foundations constructed by early September.

The target for the second fundraising phase is to raise $450,000 to ultimately acquire the property at 521 Broadway St. for the Historical Society.

Planning, Zoning and Building Director Alaina Ray said the lot is zoned for residential use, but the Historical Society could apply for a special exception to the code for nonprofit organizations.

The exception would need to be approved by the Planning and Zoning Board.

Longbeach Village resident Michael Drake recalls a moment from Sunday when a woman passed through his neighborhood to show a friend the Longboat Key Center for the Arts.

Though the woman had grown up near the Key, she had not visited in years. Drake said she was shocked and saddened to see the arts center in a demolished state.

When Drake, president of the Key’s Historical Society, told the woman of his organization’s initiative to move two historic cottages from the arts center site, he said she was overjoyed.

“She almost started crying,” Drake said. “She was so happy.”

Drake said the woman’s reaction is a sentiment shared by many Key residents and visitors who are eager to see relics of Longboat’s history preserved in a time when much of the past is being replaced.

In June, developer Jim Clabaugh purchased the 2.3-acre arts center site from Ringling College for $1.85 million. Clabaugh intends to construct 12 single-family homes on the land.

arryl Hanna Jr., arrested last week in the double homicide and robbery at the Zota Beach Resort, intended to kill when he walked into the lobby, Longboat Key Police Chief Pete Cumming said.

“There’s no reason to commit murder in this case if the intent was strictly robbery,” Cumming said at a news conference on Thursday.

The shooting in the Zota Beach Resort lobby around 2:40 a.m.

Aug. 4 killed 51-year-old security guard Kevin Carter of Bradenton and 59-year-old night desk manager Timothy Hurley of Sarasota.

Cumming said Hanna, himself a security guard at Zota who quit his job with Victory Security of Florida the next afternoon, took $900 from the hotel cash register and walked out the front door.

Hanna was arrested Aug. 9 at a home in East Bradenton without incident. He’s been ordered held without bond on two counts of second-degree murder and one count of armed robbery. Cumming said the murder charges could be upgraded to first degree if deemed appropriate by prosecutors.

Hanna’s criminal record includes several arrests, but nothing violent. He was acquitted of resisting arrest in 2009; he pleaded no contest in 2016 to a theft charge and cocaine charges against him were dropped in 2016.

Victory Security of Florida, which employed both Carter and Hanna, had no comment on the case other than to say in an email the company was not aware of anything relating to the situation beyond what had been announced

by police.

The shooting was the first on Longboat Key since 2000 and the third homicide in more than 30 years.

“Our residents are not accustomed to this kind of violence, and they won’t become accustomed to it,” Cumming said.

“This was an isolated incident, an ugly, horrible incident and the quick resolution to that, I think, can reassure people this is a safe community and it will continue to stay that way.”

Longboat Key leaders praised the work of the Longboat Police and their partners in Manatee County.

“I had such a sense of confidence in the police doing a thoroughly professional job to find out what happened and apprehend the person,” said Mayor Terry Gans. “And I think all of this, we’re shocked and we’re sad. But I think it’s viewed as an isolated incident.”

Here are some key components of the investigation, gleaned from interviews with police along with court and police records:

Hanna is 5-foot-10.

THAT GESTURE One of the most chilling images from the incident is a neckslashing gesture, seen on the security video. The man who police identify as Hanna, is looking off camera and led police to theorize someone else was in the lobby.

Cumming said investigators can’t explain the gesture.

“We’re still wondering about that ourselves,” he said, adding there was nothing to suggest a second suspect was present.

“We don’t have any evidence definitively what that was all about.”

THE EMPLOYER

THE VIDEO AND THE TIP By midday Aug. 4, police released a clip showing a figure police said was the killer from two angles on lobby security cameras. That turned into a key break in the case, Police Chief Pete Cumming said, when a Zota co-worker called to say the figure on the video appeared to be Darryl Hanna Jr., who worked at the resort for Victory Security of Florida, a private contractor. The caller said the figure’s mannerisms, body shape, walking gait and other characteristics looked like those of Hanna. The caller also said while working the same shifts, Hanna would often complain about finances and his inability to persuade his employer to schedule him

Hanna’s employer, Victory Security of Florida, confirmed to police the Hanna was a parttime employee who worked on a fill-in basis. He was dependable and could be called on to fill in a shift on short notice.

But when asked at 3 p.m. Aug. 4 – less than 13 hours after the robbery-homicides took place – to fill a shift, he told his supervisor he had accepted a new job and was resigning.

Victory owner Ron Filbert told investigators Hanna was the only employee who did not call into the office to ask about the incident at Zota. Filbert told police that when he told Hanna what had happened, Hanna’s response was: “How many times did they get shot?”

Hanna was licensed as a security guard in July 2016.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE GUN Police who examined Hanna’s Facebook page reported seeing images of Hanna holding a firearm. In the comments below the photo, Hanna described it as a .380 caliber, but “I have a 9 as well.” Crime scene evidence indicates both victims were shot with 9 mm ammunition.

THE CELL PHONE Police obtained a search warrant for Hanna’s cell phone data and found the phone linked to his number connected with a cell tower about a halfmile from Zota between 2:01 a.m. and 2:47 a.m. Ten calls connected to the segment of the tower that covers the crime scene. Based on video evidence, police say the shootings took place around 2:40 a.m.

SUSPICIOUS INCIDENT On July 21, Kevin Carter had reported a suspicious incident from the hotel. According to a police report, officers responded to the resort at 2:10 a.m. and met with Carter, who said while walking the property he spotted a woman sitting in an idling white car, possibly a Toyota, in the parking lot. He also saw a man leaning against a wall nearby. When Carter spoke to the woman, she said she had just registered for a room online. Suspicious, he returned inside to check on the registration and to call police. When officers arrived, the car and two people were gone. A check of the area turned up nothing and the case was closed. Cumming said he couldn’t comment on that incident and how it may relate to the double homicide case.

While off the million-dollar pace of such places as Boca Grande or Miami Beach, Longboat Key still showed up as No. 11 on PropertyShark’s recent list of most expensive ZIP codes, based on 2016 closed real estate sales.

“Really? I thought it’d be higher,” said Jean O’Hara, a visitor who chatted with friends while watching their children play recently at Bayfront Park. “It’s really lovely here. We love it. Maybe someday we can live here.’’

Property Shark, a national real estate blog, pegs the median sales price on Longboat Key at $672,500. Miami Beach topped the list at $3.4 million, with Lee County’s Boca Grande second ($1.29 million).

Closer to home, Anna Maria Island was ranked No. 5, Siesta Key was ranked 18th and the ZIP code that encompasses Lido Key, Bird Key and St. Armands Key (along with a little of downtown Sarasota) was 19th (see box, right). There are almost 1,500 ZIP

codes in Florida.

The Hamptons on Long Island hit it big as the national No. 1, at $5.5 million. The median sales point is the spot at which half the properties sell for more and half for less.

Sherri Mills, a Realtor with Michael Saunders & Co. on Longboat Key, said the market for properties in Longboat’s median range is showing the strongest recovery from a sluggish first quarter.

The inventory for that $600,000 to $799,000 range is about six months deep, she said.

The inventory for lower- and higher-priced homes is three to four months deeper, which professionals call a buyer’s market.

Shoppers looking at Longboat Key’s middle of the market have a variety from which to choose, ranging from some beachfront condominiums to a selection of single-family homes, some with canal access.

But there’s something else that Longboaters say you can’t get on Sanibel Island (No. 8) or Captiva Island (No. 9), Mills said.

“Other barrier islands are just that, islands among themselves,” she said. “What they have to offer residents and visitors besides the beach and outdoor activities is lacking.”

Like O’Hara, Roger Pettingell, who operates his own agency connected with Coldwell Banker Global Luxury on Longboat Key, also was surprised by the No. 11 ranking, figuring it would have been closer to the top. Still, he said, Longboat Key has been popular with buyers and visitors for a long time.

And, as a resident of Longboat Key, he’s pretty sure he knows why.

Judge delays Big Pass dredge appeal hearing A hearing regarding a challenge to the Lido Key shoreline renourishment project will wait at least another two months.

An administrative hearing on a challenge to the proposed dredging of Big Pass is delayed at least eight weeks, heightening anxiety among Lido Key residents eager to move ahead with a shoreline renourishment project.

Judge Bram Canter approved the delay earlier this month. The hearing was originally set to begin Aug. 22, but the Florida Department of Environmental Protection requested the delay to give its attorney time to recover from surgery.

Three organizations — the Siesta Key Association, Save our Siesta Sands 2 and the Florida Wildlife Association — are challenging the DEP’s decision to issue a permit for the Big Pass dredge. The city of Sarasota and U.S. Army Corps

of Engineers plan to use up to 1.3 million cubic yards of sand to renourish the Lido shoreline.

The proposed use of sand from Big Pass, which has never been dredged, has drawn opposition from Siesta residents who fear the project could harm their shoreline.

Canter ordered the parties involved in the case to provide a list of dates they have available for a rescheduled hearing by Aug. 18.

City Engineer Alex DavisShaw said the delay has changed little from the city’s perspective.

“Economically, working with the Army Corps is the best option for the city,” DavisShaw said.

For Lido residents, the delay just extends an already lengthy process. The Army Corps made its initial public presentation of the dredging plans nearly three years ago. Because the project is designed to restore a critically eroded shoreline, residents want forward momentum.

“It’s very disappointing, to say the least,” said Carl Shoffstall, president of the Lido Key Residents Association.

the city to explore short-term options for protecting properties near the water. Historically, the Atlantic hurricane season ramps up to a peak in mid-September.

DavisShaw said the city is working with residents on plans to protect against flooding and storms using sandbags.

Catherine Luckner, a Siesta Key Association board member, said the delay doesn’t impact the timing of the project. In requesting the delay, the DEP acknowledged the date of the hearing “may not make a difference” regarding when the project begins.

Luckner has repeatedly said Siesta residents’ objections to the dredging have not delayed the

project, because there is no federal funding in place to begin work.

“It doesn’t have an adverse effect on Lido because of the budget issues,” Luckner said.

However, DavisShaw said the prolonged challenge to the permit will make it more difficult for the city and Army Corps to secure federal funding.

“Obviously, having a permit in hand makes it easier to get funding than not having a permit in hand,” DavisShaw said.

If the parties can’t reach an agreement, Save our Siesta Sands 2 Chairman Peter van Roekens said the Siesta groups have assembled four expert witnesses to testify on their behalf, which

he hopes will persuade a judge to stop the project.

If necessary, van Roekens said the organizations will challenge the dredge at the federal level, which could delay the project for years.

for treating hand pain Your thumbs have a lot of work to do, but arthritis flare-ups aren’t always activity-related.

F

orget everything you’ve ever heard about successful networking. I have discovered the most ingenious way to meet people — develop basal joint thumb arthritis, wear hand splints to immobilize your thumbs, and voila, the most interesting people stop you at street corners, in restaurants, at the veterinarian’s office, you name it. It’s a constant stream of new acquaintances, and here’s the thing: they all have a story to tell and, for the most part, they’re sympathetic to your story. That’s because their thumbs hurt, too — sometimes chronically and other times when performing a certain task like using scissors or picking something up in a pinching motion. And no one has a surefire solution for the pain to share.

And they are mostly women.

At the risk of violating Title IX or some other ridiculous government regulation, women bear the brunt of this painful condition. According to the June 2017 issue of Arthritis & Rheumatology, osteoarthritis in the hand is common. More than 2,200 adults were studied and found that the overall risk of developing hand OA is 40%. And here’s the rub, it occurs in about 50% of women versus 25% of men. I was outraged. I tracked down my favorite orthopedic surgeon for information.

Dr. David Klein of Kennedy White was not only patient but also encyclopedic in his explanation. “Our thumbs are very important because of the way that they help us interact with our world, Kristine,” he began.

“They are not truly fingers but they are certainly digits (the differences are that a finger has three bones (phalanges) while a thumb has two; also, each finger has two flexor tendons where the thumb has one).”

He quickly got to the heart of why this condition is so painful.

“The thumb is likely our most frequently used digit because it is involved as the partner to each of the other digits during grasp and manipulation of objects.

HOW TO ALLEVIATE THE PAIN n Activity modification. Try

changing the mechanics of how you use your thumb, such as keeping the joint closest to the thumbnail bent rather than straight during grasp and pinch of objects, which in turn changes how the forces of pinch are carried across the basal joint. n Splinting. Keeping the thumb immobile as much as possible gives the basal joint or thumb time to “quiet down.” That can take the form of over-the-counter thumb braces or customfitted rigid plastic splints made by hand therapists (which is what I use). n Medications. There are several medications ranging from topical to cortisone injections. Talk to your physician or hand surgeon to determine which to try. n Surgery. While surgery is usually quite effective in most people, few people actually seem to need it because they can control their symptoms by nonsurgical means. However, when nothing else is working, basal joint surgery is done as an outpatient but can take anywhere from weeks to months to reach a plateau level of improvement.

There are many different variations of surgical procedures for basal joint arthritis. Dr. David Klein suggests that patients at that stage of their symptoms talk to their hand surgeon with respect to their options.

And then he hit the core issue by citing the value of hand use.

And here’s a little known fact: when people frequently say that “the thumb is what makes us different from the apes,” this is not necessarily true, for there are a few species of primates that do have opposable thumbs.

EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK

Dr. Klein outlined the various kinds of conditions that cause thumb pain. “There is stenosing flexor tenosynovitis, otherwise known as ‘trigger thumb,’ also Dequervain’s tenosynovitis, which is common during pregnancy and nursing, as well as from various injuries or activi-

ties. Tears or stretches in the ulnar collateral ligament at the metacarpophalangeal joint, which can be known as ‘gamekeeper’s thumb’ or ‘skier’s thumb,’ and the subject of your questions (and condition): basal joint arthritis, also known as carpometacarpal arthritis. Of these, the last one, basal joint arthritis, a type of osteoarthritis, is the most insidious and perhaps the most common.”

My first reaction is to blame my three-legged dog — now at the Rainbow Bridge — whose canine arthritis was so debilitating in the final months of his life that he had to be picked up several times a day with a splayed hand position. Wrong, says Dr. Klein, letting poor Puppet off the hook. “Many people do think that basal joint arthritis is just activity-related from overuse,” he explains. “It is in fact a genetic pattern that is passed through families, frequently along the mother’s side. It tends to be more symptomatic during activity, but it occurs in people of all activity levels, usually beginning to be symptomatic in one’s 40s or 50s, and more common in women than in men.”

Why? “I don’t know the reason that it is more common in women,” he replies. “But I do know that texting ... cannot be blamed for one’s thumb arthritis!”

Whew.

THE MYSTERY CONTINUES

Dr. Klein went on to say that while many types of osteoarthritis that people are familiar with — hip and knee being most common — progress in a continually worsening fashion as the years pass, basal joint arthritis is unique in that it tends to go through a several-year period of significant pain and disability, after which the symptoms just quiet down even though the visible deformity and the X-rays continue to worsen. Additionally, and this is really interesting, the amount of pain that someone has with their thumb does not always correlate with how much deformity they have nor with how severe the changes are on their X-rays. “Because of this,” he continues, “the main goal of treatment is to reduce the symptoms during the time that the pain from the arthritis is the most troublesome. Currently, we do not have a treatment that will stop basal joint arthritis or other forms of osteoarthritis from progressing, so all of the treatment is ‘symptomatic treatment.’”

This spring, Sarasota city staff and St. Armands Circle leaders reached an agreement to transfer responsibility for maintaining the landscaping in medians throughout the area to the St. Armands Business Improvement District.

All the deal needed was City Commission approval. More than three months later, it remains unclear whether that approval will ever come.

On Aug. 8, the BID discussed the uncertainty surrounding the future of median landscaping in the Circle. St. Armands property owners and merchants have complained that the city has failed to properly maintain the landscaping after the BID helped fund a $450,000 median improvement project in 2012.

Under the agreement outlined with city staff, the city would give the BID the money it spends maintaining medians in the Circle — $72,000 a year. The BID would use that funding to get a dedicated maintenance contractor. Staff also agreed to an $80,000 onetime investment to restore the landscaping to its original state.

The City Commission, however, questioned the necessity of the changes. During a budget hear-

ing in July, Mayor Shelli Freeland Eddie singled out the landscaping proposal as an idea to which she objected. The parks department indicated a belief it could now satisfactorily maintain the medians, operating with a bigger budget than it had five years earlier.

“I think those funds could be better used in-house for city employees,” Eddie said.

The BID had hoped to begin the process of searching for a contractor by now. Instead, it is waiting to see how the budget shapes up in September.

“I’d hate for us to spend time on it if this is a dead issue,” BID Chairman Gavin Meshad said.

Marty Rappaport, the former BID chairman who worked with city staff on the proposed landscaping agreement, acknowledged the city’s maintenance had recently improved. Still, he said, that didn’t erase the past service.

“Our problem was that they’ve never done a good job on it, and they only started doing a good job when we requested they give it to the BID,” Rappaport said.

The focus on median landscaping is tied to a larger conversation among St. Armands leaders about improving the look of the Circle, with businesses and landlords striving to promote an upscale image. Regardless of the fate of the maintenance agreement, the BID is focused on ensuring the landscaping is as good as possible.

“There was no great desire from us to be in charge of taking care of maintenance, but it’s very important to the image of St. Armands,” Rappaport said.

Freiwald said the task force is pleased that FDOT is showing initiative in coming up with traffic solutions for the area.

Katheryn Marie Himmelspach, 90, died Aug. 6 in Bradenton.

Mrs. Himmelspach was born on July 17, 1927, in Jamestown, Ill., to Arthur Henry Hadley and Milda Bertha Siever. She graduated from Pocahontas High School in 1945 and studied nursing at St. John’s College of Nursing in Springfield, Ill. She worked as a nurse in Ann Arbor and Saginaw, Mich., for 10 years, becoming the head pediatric nurse at St. Mary’s of Michigan Hospital in Saginaw.

Mrs. Himmelspach married John Andrew Himmelspach on Feb. 16, 1952.

In addition to raising a family, Mrs. Himmelspach had a green thumb for perennial gardening and enjoyed China painting and quilting for many years.

She volunteered with Meals on Wheels, disabled children and at each church her family attended.

Aside from her volunteering, Mrs. Himmelspach kept busy with cruises and trips with her husband and other family members to Europe, Australia, Alaska and elder hosteling across the lower 48. She enjoyed golfing, bowling, reading and sailing.

Ms. Klein had many interests, including tennis, bridge and golf, and was lucky enough to record a hole-in-one, though her greatest passion was for her husband.

She and Joe were married for 76 years, their relationship growing stronger when they moved to Longboat Key. They shared many interests, including their love of the Ashcan School of art.

Ms. Klein is survived by her son, Bill, and daughter-in-law Margie, two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Harold Brandwene, of Kingston, Pa. Earl M. Mumford, 89, of Bradenton and Haward, Wis., died on Aug. 1 with his family on Grindstone Lake in Wisconsin. He served on the vestry at All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church on Longboat Key. Dr. Mumford was born March 12, 1928, in Howard, S.D., and graduated from high school there in 1946. He was an avid fisherman and pheasant hunter. He joined the U.S. Army in 1946 and served in Italy, and attended University of South Dakota and the medical school at Northwestern University upon completion of his military duty.

Ms. Oxford grew up in Birmingham, Ala., and graduated from Woodlawn High School, eventually attending nursing school. She married Paul T. Oxford Jr. on Dec. 3, 1949. After selling the family business, Mr. and Ms. Oxford moved to Florida, living in Pensacola, Plantation, Brandon, Longboat Key and then back to Birmingham.

She was preceded in death by her husband, son Paul III and son Robert Terry. She is survived

Not grandpa, and he follows one simple motto.

“If it ain’t fun, I’m not doing it.”

His real name is Phil Cady. The Shore Condominiums resident earned his nickname “Grampa Phil” over the 20 years of volunteering he’s done at the Iditarod.

For the past 20 years, Cady has been a member of the “Pee Team.”

Along with his teammates, Cady picks up exhausted dogs, drug tests dogs throughout the race and does check-ins with veterinarians.

Cady started volunteering for the Iditarod in the 1990s, and in 2004 he took it a step further.

That year, Cady participated in the Serum Run. The Serum Run is similar to the Iditarod, but it isn’t a race.

In 1925, a diphtheria epidemic swept across Alaska. At that time, the only way to get medicine to those infected was to bring the serum on a train from Anchorage to Fairbanks’ neighboring town, Nenana, and then by dog sled from Nenana to the other side of Alaska.

Today, mushers track that same path, but instead of carrying a vial of medicine, they carry a vial of

maple syrup. They also stop in each village, which are about 50 miles apart, and speak to Alaska Native youths about two of the biggest problems they are facing: juvenile diabetes and alcoholism.

Alaska Native youths are the largest age group affected by diabetes at 27%. A lot of them are also affected by alcoholism.

“I think I’m stuck on the last 20 years at the Iditarod. It’s kind of like a fixture. It’s family.”

As Cady puts it, they don’t have much else to do.

Cady, now 90, is the oldest living person to complete the Serum Run. He did it when he was 77.

Cady is not an indoor person. In fact, he’s quite the opposite.

“I am a wilderness explorer adventurer,” he said.

Don’t believe him? For Cady’s 90th birthday, Jan Cady made a

list titled “Grampa Phil’s 90 years of adventure” that included 39 feats Cady accomplished before his milestone birthday. n At 65, he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. n He’s traveled every continent and visited more than 140 countries. n He caught a new species of tropical fish with a professor in Indonesia. n He has slept in a hut with the African Masai tribe. n He did the “made man” ceremony in the Australian outback with the Aborigines.

And the list goes on and on.

“He goes where no one goes,” Jan Cady, Phil’s wife, said. “He’s always sleeping with the natives in the hut or something, no bathrooms. He doesn’t care.”

When you sit down with Cady, it’s obvious he’s most passionate about the people and purpose of the Iditarod.

“I think I’m stuck on the last 20 years at the Iditarod,” he said. “It’s kind of like a fixture. It’s family.”

He flips through scrapbooks without missing a beat. He knows everyone pictured and a memory specific to them.

down the aisle at her wedding at the Iditarod finish line. The dogs he slept with because they were warmer than sleeping under caribou hides. A man named Rudy whom he taught to drink root beer floats with three scoops, “not that cheap two-scoop stuff,” instead of alcohol. A man named Charlie who bet Phil he was older.

That bet has become tradition.

When Cady heads to Alaska in March for the next Iditarod, he has to drink 63 rootbeer floats as part of a bet. Whenever someone guesses his age incorrectly, they owe him a root beer float.

“If you can’t get it within five years, you owe me a root beer float with three scoops,” he said.

Cady isn’t ready to slow down.

As Jan Cady puts it, they’ve been married for 40 years. Phil needs to live to be 100, so they can have 50 years together, but he’s pushing to 105, just like Frank Sinatra sang about in his song “Young at Heart.”

As the song puts it, “if you should survive to a hundred and five, look at all you’ll derive out of bein’ alive.”

It seems to be that Cady took that line and ran with it.

W

aterside parties aren’t known for leaving the beach better than it started, but that’s exactly what Engulfed Adventures had in mind Aug. 13.

The kayak and stand-up paddle board company hosted a clean up and barbecue at Overlook Park. As children played on oversized inflatable rafts, parents and older children got to work, armed with gloves and large black trash bags.

It wasn’t all about the work though.

As the work wound down, volunteers also enjoyed stand-up paddle board — SUP — excursions and burgers.
